Title: Necrocannibal's Painting Log (Mi-Go 19-05-2020).
Post by: necrocannibal on March 26, 2012, 05:37:46 PM
Seeing the great one day painting logs, I decided to do a painting log of my own. It won't be a one day painting thingy, because I'm quite a slow painter. But then again, I'll be posting one picture at a time otherwise one post will look to crowded. Hopefully, some of you will enjoy watching these.
The first ones will be older models I have posted a while ago, but I've made new (and hopefully better) pictures of them. After those, I'll add pictures of models I've just painted.

Cultist with a Tommy Gun:

Thanks, I think it's fun to watch other people's painted SA miniatures, so I hope people will enjoy mine as well.

Two more Cultists to go after this one...
Now I'm off to try and finish a couple of Ghouls (the Heresy ones).

I really like your painting style... but to be honest i do find them a bit plain/boring to look at (even though well painted) maybe you could try a Logo or a bit of freehand...

Im not sure i could do that myself but i would love to try (and will on mine)! Keep up the good work!

I know what you mean, but I'm really crap at doing freehands. So these are as good as they get from me.

I feel your pain, my freehand sucks also...that is why I went simple two tone. I figure my guys didn't take home economics in their high school...

I'm already happy that I can slap some paint on some models and make them look decent, but I can't draw even if my life depended on it. Ah well, tomorrow I'll post the last two Cultists and after that I'll move on to other stuff (most of which already have been posted by me a while ago or even recently).

I could draw, my problem is it took more effort than a talented artist could pull it out of their head. For me it was a labor if you will and I didn't enjoy that. What I did looked great in drawing class in college but I was also too busy flirting with the red headed gal next to me....didn't get me anywhere, she had a boyfriend but still, she was smoking hot.

In time I may go back and try it again, I did do some freehand strips on a cap that I should be posting in a few days, just have to finish the eyes and base.

Today two miniatures...the last of the Cultists (for now). Nothing spectacular, just a continuation of the last two.

Not clearly visible in this picture, but there's a small log on the ground near his feet.

So, tomorrow no Cultists...

I do like the fact that the two sets have alot of variety and character...and I assume they would match up well to the Black Cat Bases figures...

Plus they have the .30 cal model, not keen on the gas masks much but meh...not sure why but I just want to have a .30 cal to gun down Threshold idiots...also going to get the Artizan Flamerthower cultist...burn baby burn!

Great work on those Cultists, necrocannibal!
 :-* :-* :-*

That red looks just fantastic!
I wish I had used red myself now.
Too late really, as the four that I have nearly finished are purple.
Thoroughly agree about the Pulp offerings- superb!
Those and the Artizan selection both look great.
Maybe a second 'red; cult could be in the offing later on.

Thanks, I also have some Cowled Cultists from Pulp Figures, but I haven't painted them yet.
I painted them red because I think red is one of the easiest colors to highlight. Also I think red looks quite menacing. Purple is also a great color for Cultists I think.
I still have to find out what Cult it's going to be...don't know anything about Cults and their colors.

The Mad Scientist, I think this was the first model I've painted for SA. The first time I tried to paint a face, to paint white with shading and to paint gore. I sculpted the base myself...I'm not that great with Green Stuff, but I'm quite pleased at the result (especially the drain). I love this model as it reminds me of the Re-Animator movies.

Yes, it's a fun model...it's made by Studio Miniatures (http://www.studiominiatures.com/ (http://www.studiominiatures.com/)). I'ts part of the first zombie set.
Sunday I'll post another zombie from the same set.

Thank you all for the kind words...things like that make me want to paint so more stuff. Just wanted to put everything I've already posted before in one big ongoing Painting Log. Still four more older and already posted models to go before I come to the brand new stuff and never before seen stuff (Blasphemous Construct/ Boss Zombie, Deep One and three Ghouls), which I think people will enjoy (at least I hope so).

Ghost is nice.

I'd try a reallly thinned wash of green to give it that ghostly hue, (like the army of the dead minis from LoTR), gives them a real etheral quality. Nice as is but still feesl a little moncrome zombie if you know what I mean.

Only other thing I'd say is your water effects are great, maybe a little foam at the shoreline just to give a bit more a natural transition?

Cheers

I thought so, that it might look a bit bare...I'll add some flock tomorrow and update the picture when it's done.
This shack is the Plantation Shanty from Architects of War...Warlord Games also sells them. Quite expensive, but really nice. I also have Jebodiah's Shack.

Edit: just added some grass and tufts and it look a lot better now. Pictures tomorrow when the PVA glue has dried.

Hit it with some Testor's dull coat, that will help reduce the shine. The flocking will help with the accenting around the edge of the building...

I always use Dullcote, but shades of brown are my photographing nemesis...brown still shines like crazy, even if I've used gallons of Dullcote. I'll post pictures of the updated shack later today.

Thanks...I have three trees of which one has a base (bought them this Saturday), still have to do the other two. I have a ruined house, two more shacks and about 5 Shanties that I still have to paint. Reading about crates reminds me that I also have a few of those lying around unpainted...I still have a lot to do! Also lying around are some painted barrels, I'm definitely going to use these in future SA games.

The barrels:

Thanks. Artizan makes some great figures. Their models are very detailed, very nice to paint and just look great. The only problem I have is that thay need quite a bit of cleaning up (quite a lot of flash and moldlines), but generally not in critical areas so no detail is lost. These models are comparable to those from Bob Murch's Pulp Figures, but those have a higher casting quality (a lot less flash and moldlines). Both manufacturers are highly recommended by me.

It's been a while since I've painted something, but as I have a SA game coming up, I've started to paint some more.
This time, it's another zombie (a bit more "fresh" than the other Zombies I've painted so far):

Just finished two models today...Conglomerates! These really have the Re-Animator feel to them...they're bizarre and gross. In real life they're a bit more gross to look at to be honest.
I'll post the first one today and tomorrow the other (more bizarre or disturbing) one.

Great figure and good work! What line is that figure from?

It's from the same line as the Ghost I've painted a while ago. The Lovecraft Circle miniatures from Harwood Hobbies, it's called Re-Animated Horror: http://www.harwoodhobbies.com/userimages/procart3.htm (http://www.harwoodhobbies.com/userimages/procart3.htm).

The stuff of nightmares...Conglomerate number two, this one also reminds me of Bride of Re-Animator...a dismembered woman with legs attached and intestines flying out...pretty bizarre.

Now I'm going to paint a smaller Conglomerate which is based on the Head from John Carpenter's The Thing and a Hand Swarm. These models all come from the "Gross Anatomy" set from Magnificent Egos.

Thanks a lot. I'm going to play some games on the 12th of May with some fellow Dutch LAF forum members and I'll definitely take some pictures...the games will all have a Mad Scientist theme so it'll have lots of weird creatures and zombies, which is why I painted three Conglomerates in such a short time.

A new zombie...I'm not really sure if I'm happy with this one. For some unknown reason I've really struggled to get the skin the way I wanted and in the pictures the skin is a bit washed out. Ah well, at least it's Tabletop Standard and that's good enough for me.

I have FINALLY finished one of my own. It had been on the painting table for ages, but I was not satisfied with it. I kept going back and altering things, to no avail.

A while ago I made a "zombie flesh" step-by-step tutorial  on my blog to show how I painted my Secrets of the Third Reich/Incursion zombies. I also use the same steps to paint all zombie flesh regardless of game.

Very nice looking Zombie...the base colors I use are about the same, but with the woman zombie, I somehow had a bad day at painting miniatures. This next zombie looks a lot better to be honest...I think he was a hunter or something like that, before half his head was turned into raw meat.

Thanks again, I'm quite pleased with that Zombie...he really looks horrible (in a good and sickening way).
Here's something different, it's a piece of scenery by Rusty Rail...really nice and detailed, but it's quite difficult to paint as it has a lot of holes, gaps and stuff like that where normal paint won't go. I used a lot of watered down paints and washes...still I'm pleased with the results, this picture doesn't really show all the nice little details very clearly (rusty cans, broken chair/ table, beer bottles etc.).

Nice barrel, nc.
You may want to consider a wash of a dark brown as that would really bring out the woodgrain.

Nothing wrong with it, as is, but that would take it to the next level.

It was time to paint something for Strange Aeons again. Just bought some scenery at Crisis 2012 in Antwerp and painted this Dog House, really fun to paint. It's not really clear in this picture, but I gave some boards a different color (green, red and yellow) and I gave some parts an appearance of algae growth. One thing I still have to do is add some water to the bowl.

It's made by a German company called Stronghold Terrain (http://www.stronghold-terrain.de/ (http://www.stronghold-terrain.de/)). It's pretty big though, I think a closer to 30mm than 28mm. But to be honest, a monstrously big guard dog will fit in nicely in a game like SA.

Thanks. Even though I love Deathguard, I don't really like painting models like that. Painting a whole army just isn't my cup of tea...I like to paint a lot of different models instead of a whole bunch of the same stuff, I get bored really quickly. Also I still have a big amount of Strange Aeons related models lying around that need to be painted, so I'll be painting those in between my Deathguard things.

Thanks! To be honest I only used some drybrushing, a few washes, couple of glazes and some weathering...that's all. I don't like to use fancy techniques if I can get things looking decent with a minimum amount of work. I added some water to the bowl, but ended up removing it again...the stuff I use shrinks like crazy, I have to look around to find some better water or just leave it out entirely.

That's the great thing about SA, you actually don't need loads and loads of stuff to play a nice game...however I do prefer to have a lot of scenery on the table as it adds a lot of cover and ways to sneak up on your opponent (in any game to be honest). I just need more trees...the ones in that AAR weren't mine.

Trees are a terrain essential for sure. I'm actually awaiting the arrival of some I got of an eBay shop. I used the seller before to pick up 100 palm tries for some jungle terrain. Quite reasonably priced... Actually bloody cheap (£7.99 for 100)  lol
I cant be bothered to make my own, tho tried a woodland scenics kit once and was most unhappy with the results. Where do you get your trees from?

Edited to add price( after checking)

Next time I think I'll paint a new Threshold Agent...Agent Cranston, guess what he's going to look like.

Yep, it's from CP Models...a very nice sculpt by redshadows. I also have the Spectre, which is also a nice model. Still have to buy that Night Horror model, I really love that one.

I've finaly thought of a name for my Threshold Team. "Geheime Hollandse Organisatie voor het Uitroeien van Landsbedreigende Sekten - Paranormale Divisie" or simply G.H.O.U.L.S - P.D. (Secret Dutch Organisation for the Extermination of Country Threatening Sects - Paranormal Division).

Their two new Agents:

Agent Cranston:

Agent Lamont:

I'm not too happy with these paintjobs, highlights are too harsh and some parts are a bit messy. At least they're decent enough to leave them the way they are now.

Thanks. The names come from a movie that I really like, The Shadow. The main character is called Lamont Cranston and because they came from the same set I decided to split the name up and give them each half of that name, making them a crime/ sect fighting duo.

They look great. Like they spend a lot of time scouring the dark Dutch underworld for forbidden cults.

I have the reaper version of the shadow after seeing him on another LAF thread. I'm going to use him as a rogue threshold agent.

I'm in agreement with Oldben1 on the movie...couldn't have said it better myself! And those models and the paintjob look great! I'm guessing by the sculpts that they are Pulp Figures by Mr. Murch? Strange, as I haven't got this pack yet...guess I know where my X-mas cash will be going... ::)

Yep, those models are by the great Mr. Murch, I love his sculpts...quite simple sculpts with enough details and a joy to paint (also great casting quality).

Now off to paint my Fly Demon/ Winged Nightmare/ Giant Bug and after that the model smokezombie sent me...I'm looking forward to painting it.

Well, Here it is...the Winged Nightmare/ Fly Demon/ Giant Bug. Even though I'm quite pleased with the results, it's been a hell painting this one. I had huge problems with paint chipping off while painting, the primer didn't seem to stick. I even had problems with pooling glossy varnish that turned white...I'm glad it's finished.

I had some Gem Jade paint by Auto Air colors lying around for my Death Guard (it's a chameleon color shift paint) and I thought it would look great on a huge fly, so I decided this model would be a suitable Winged Nightmare...I can also use it a a Giant Bug, but I think I'll buy something else for that. It's Cichastus, Fly Demon made by Reaper (http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/cichastus/latest/02744#detail/02744_G).

It's been a really long time since I've painted anything for Strange Aeons, but the Kickstarter project made me want to paint and play the game more (first Kickstarter I've ever backed). Even played a game with a colleague of mine, he really liked the game and has been thinking of buying models for it.
This model I've painted recently will be used as a Shambler and it was given to me by a very generous member called smokezombie a couple of years ago.

Always good to see any new mythos related work, but the paint job on that Shambler is quite stunning, thanks for sharing. And no that the Strange Aeons KS has me all fired up again I'm starting to do some prep work of my own. I have to concur with you that more scenery should be near the top of the list and to that effect I have to say I'm really liking the looks of that shack, would you happen to have any idea who the manufacturer is?

The shack is from a site called Rusty Rail and it's an O scale (1:48) kit: http://rustyrail.com/OShacksCastingsOscalePage.htm (http://rustyrail.com/OShacksCastingsOscalePage.htm)

It quite a good match for 28 mm miniatures, maybe just a little bit too small but it's not really noticable during a game.

No unfortunately the roof doesn't come off (saves me from painting the inside though). This shack was meant to be used as railway scenery and not to be used in wargames/ miniature games. It does look a lot better than most railway stuff and the cast was pretty good and relatively easy to build (and paint).

Thanks, disgusting is a good thing!

I've had this mini from day one, before the seller started an online store so it's been sitting around for quite some time. The best Dark Young sculpt around in my opinion.

Absolutely impressive, best Dark Young paint job I've ever had the pleasure to see. And yeah, although I don't own it myself I've always intended to add that model to my mythosian menagerie. The colors used, the transitions thereof, and that as previously praised work on the tongues, this just screams unearthly. Looking forward to seeing more of your work and thanks for sharing.

I'd second all the positive comments made above.

I agree about the quality of the scuplt. Unlike some, it manages to convey the weight of the creature as well as a threatening dynamism.

This sculpt is truely amazing, as you've stated it's got a lot of dynamism and it looks really threatening. It's one of the few (if not the only one) Dark Young sculpts that isn't bulky and looking like it's really slow. This one looks like it'll stomp all over a person if it doesn't attack with its tentacles and eat its victim. Very nice to paint as well.

Yes, the base isn't finished yet...I should have known better to order things in December...my fake snow/ ice is still on its way.

I really love this sculpt as it seems to be based on the Maniac Santa from the first episode of Tales from the Crypt (And All Through the House).

Lovely paintjob!

I was reminded a bit of Paul Blackthorne in the Christmas-themed episode of Warehouse 13. There's something in the combination of facial sculpt and the colouring you've given him that calls him to mind.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work in the coming year.

So true. It only snows a couple of days a year here and I like it that way. I anxiously await the snow/ ice from Secret Weapon Miniatures and I can't wait to try it out on this model.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work in the coming year.

Still haven't decided on what to paint next...I have tons of stuff lying around. Maybe I'll finish putting my Dark Puppeteer together or paint a Werewolf or maybe some fishmen or hybrids...decisions decisions.

He is indeed based on Tales From The Crypt...that Santa was freaky!

That one's much more faithful to the comic version than the Santa from the 70's movie...fantastic sculpt and really fun and easy to paint.

Added a Fire Daemon to the Lurker collection. The idea behind this model was borrowed from a fellow member and quite an excellent painter here that hasn't posted for a while now (einarolafson). Easiest and fastest paintjob up untill now for me. The model was made of clear resin and painted using GW glazes, the scorched earth on the base was done with MIG pigments and the burnt piece of wood was burnt with real fire...not a good idea to be honest as it'll melt the base itself if you're not careful...

Nice additions!
My personal favourite is the Night Stalker, he is exceptional.

It has been a long time since I ventured in these parts, which may have to be rectified soon....

Thank you very much! My interest has been revitalised when my son (11 years old) wanted to play and I found out I needed more Lurkers, you never have enough Lurkers!
Can't wait to see some more painted miniatures from you, I always enjoy seeing them.

I agree as well. Really awesome.  Who is the manufacturer?  I only have the Ral Partha and Fantasy Flight Migo minis.

Thanks! This Mi-Go is from Dust 1947 and it comes in a set of three. Scale is a bit larger than 28mm, but it's such a great sculpt that I don't mind.

Thanks for the info.
I may have to look at picking some of them up as I have seen a Midge that really grabs me yet.
Until now....

Loving the flesh pinks and purples on the Night Stalker and Mi-Go
