Title: Sources for quality fantasy minis
Post by: FramFramson on March 30, 2012, 08:06:25 AM
This has effectively become a list of all the Fantasy minis manufacturers of at least reasonable quality.

List of manufacturers:

This is by no means a complete list, but here's a few to get us started (all listed sites have an English version).

Alkemy
http://alkemy-the-game.com/shop
- Rights to the Alkemy line have been acquired by a fan group and new minis are being created! Along with the usual fantasy tropes, their factions also include some wonderful Shaolin-fantasy figures, and one of the best cat-people lines ever sculpted.

Andrea
http://www.andrea-miniatures.com/en/1/andrea-miniatures/127/battle-series.html
- Normally known for 54mm showpieces, they also have a few small 30-32mm ranges of good quality.

Avatars of War
http://www.avatars-of-war.com/eng/web
- Dense, robust minis. Heavily textured with extensive detail and a powerful and aggressive presence.

Ax Faction (NSFW!)
http://www.axfaction.com/#!shop
- Small line so far, mostly consisting of very fine resin fantasy/steampunk minis, with a definite love of, er, skin.

Bad Squiddo Games
http://thedicebaglady.net/bad-squiddo-games-miniatures
- Small line focused on “believable female miniatures”, so far with shieldmaidens both human and orc.

Blackball Games
http://blackballgames.com
- A small range still concentrating on various outlandish monsters, beasts, and elder horrors.

Black Scorpion
http://www.blackscorpionminiatures.com/index.php
- Their pirate ranges include several fantasy races besides the regular human ones. Also many Fantasy Football/Bloodbowl characters.

Blood Moon
http://www.bloodmoonminis.com/CatalogTrial/index.php
- A small selection of beast-, spider-, and snake-people, and not-fimirs. The current version of the website is a bit odd and may not load all the fantasy miniatures right away. I was only able to see them all by repeatedly going back and forth between the homepage and fantasy page.

Brigade Models
http://www.brigademodels.co.uk/Celtos/index.html
- Have a fantasy range under their "Celtos" line of figures. Ok figures for the most part, but there are a fair number of standout winners among them.

Bronze Age Minis
http://www.bronzeagemin.com/miniatures_html/32MM/FANTASY/fantasy32mm.htm
- A small to medium fantasy catalogue, combining conventional fantasy with classical and Hyborean motifs.

Brother Vinni (NSFW!)
http://www.brother-vinni.com/index_eng.htm
- A small collection of fantasy miniatures, mostly (but not all) women in rather advanced states of undress. However, Vinni is an excellent sculptor and does have some perfectly ordinary fantasy miniatures suitable for any game table.

Cavalcade Wargames
http://cavalcadewargames.com/cavalcade/store.html
- A few unremarkable humans & human-like figures, where they really shine are are their nicely interesting beasts and monsters, with lots of personality and good detail.

Cipher
Former catalogue at http://cipher-studios.com, new owners at http://sodapopminiatures.com/
- Two minis lines, Anima Tactics (with very fine-featured, nearly ethereal figures, inspired by anime-flavoured artwork, with many useable in fantasy) and Hell Dorado (fantasy Age-of-Exploration). The Hell Dorado line is heavily stylized with a hint of cartoonishness to it, but has a wonderful and beautiful motion, great poses, and a high overall quality. Recently sold to Soda Pop miniatures.

Cool Mini Or Not
http://www.coolminiornot.com/shop/miniatures/cmon-miniatures-1
http://www.coolminiornot.com/shop/miniatures/cmon-miniature-limited-edition
- Normally a reseller and an aggregate site, they do have a small line of exclusive figures created for their own sale.

Crocodile
https://www.crocodilegames.com
- Focus mostly on fantasy historical lines of the classical world, but has many miniatures adaptable to general fantasy purposes.

Dark Sword
- http://www.darkswordminiatures.com
Noted for their unique focus on accurate and genuine human proportions for their figures. Some figures feel posed or static, but the sculpture quality is quite high with a large, well-developed catalogue. Also produce the official Game of Thrones minis.

DGS Games
http://www.dgsgames.com/index.php/link-shop
- Medium-to-small line of stock fantasy figures, with good detail and quality. Source a lot of material from some of the lesser-known-but-still-top-shelf French/European sculptors.

Dragon-Bait
http://www.dragon-bait-minis.com
- Small line of conventional fantasy minis, suitable for skirmish games. Sculpted and sold by our own Cotton Eyed Joe.

Enigma
http://enigmaminiatures.com
- Another manufacturer of detail heavy, fairly aggressive figures. These ones have something of an "edge" to them, with a distinctly sinister "dark fantasy" look to their line.

Eureka
10mm: http://eurekamin.com.au/index.php?cPath=87_100_101
18mm: http://eurekamin.com.au/index.php?cPath=87_110_116
28mm: http://eurekamin.com.au/index.php?cPath=87_126_144
- Buried in the gigantic Eureka catalogue are several traditional fantasy packs. The 18mm lineup is comprehensive, but there's only a small smattering of 10mm minis and the 28mm figures are limited mainly to a series of centaurs.

Fenris
http://fenrisgames.com
- Multiple smaller fantasy lines, including their Draugyr undead and their Wyrdworld line of anthropomorphic fantasy creatures.

Figone
http://www.figone.fr
- Like Andrea, they mainly do 54mm showpieces, but have a few 28-32mm figures of good quality.

Foundry
http://www.wargamesfoundry.com
- Long-established manufacturer stretching back to the dawn of time, or, well, close anyway. Focus much more on historicals, but there has always been some fantasy mixed in.

Four A
http://www.fouraminiatures.com/index.htm
- Assorted fantasy minis in a little more of an old-school style, with a mix between conventional personalities and some unconventional creatures.

Freebooter
http://www.freebooterminiatures.de
- Werner Klockes' private enterprise, mostly consisting of pirates, though there are a fair number of pure fantasy figures sprinkled throughout the catalogue.

Games Workshop
Oh, you know the url.
- Everyone's favourite Evil Empire. Quality has risen steadily over the years, but character has declined. They employ an excellent stable of sculptors and still have some winners. CAUTION: Warhammer Fantasy range is currently being exploded and many kits are falling out of production to be replaced with who knows what.

Gamezone
http://gamezoneminiatures.de
- A fairly detailed and dynamic line that seems to follow the WHFB factions and units fairly closely, possibly offering a high-quality alternative to GW.

GCT Studios
http://www.bushido-thegame.com
- Makers of Bushido, an Asian-flavoured (specifically Japanese) game with some interesting and dynamic figures. A nice selection of Asian-style beasts, demons and monsters too.

Guild Ball
http://guildball.com/#home
- Another fantasy football game, this one with teams themed by medieval guild trades; fishermen, butchers, masons, etc. A bit overblown, but fun, with lively sculpts.

Guild of Harmony
http://www.guildofharmony.com/shop_GOH_pg1.php
- A small, but respectable line of minis. Split between Asian-flavoured and more conventional fantasy.

Hasslefree
http://www.hfminis.co.uk
- Much of the lineup is modern or sci-fi, but a sizeable chunk is fantasy. Clean, well-sculpted figures, many of which are quite affordable. Most of the figures universal fantasy types, of games, but there's also the small but very distinct "World of Twilight" fantasy creature line.

Heresy
http://www.heresyminiatures.com/shop
- Energetic and colourful minis, with a focus on a variety of lively demonic or barbaric creatures. Has Steve Buddles' Spyglass range and a few of the old Eolith miniatures as well.

Historic Art Miniatures
http://historicartminiatures.com/?page_id=540
- Another site which mainly makes busts and large display figures, but has a few wargame-sized figures of very high quality. Also known as Nocturna Miniatures.

Imbrian Arts
http://www.imbrianarts.com
- No human-types so far, but many and fantastic goblins and other fantasy creatures, all full of vibrant energy.

Lead Adventures
http://www.lead-adventure.com
- Our very own! The lines produced so far trend towards certain specific areas (I doubt anyone else has quite so many furious pot-armed women lol), but the quality and character is undeniable.

Mad Puppet
http://www.madpuppetminiatures.com/main.php?zone=cat&cat=1
- A very small fantasy range, but with some excellent work on those few minis to be had.

Magister Militum
www.magistermilitum.com
- Mostly a historical manufacturer, but has a good-sized line of 15mm and 28mm fantasy minis with an old-school 80's/early 90's style.

Maidenhead
http://members.optushome.com.au/cynan
- Specializing in amazons and beastwomen.

Mannikin Studios
http://mannikinstudios.com
- Miniatures based exclusively on Arthur Rackham's paintings. Very small and rather eccentric range, but excellent quality.

Mantic Games
http://www.manticgames.com/home.html
- Another company offering a "Not-WHFB" set of lines, with reasonable quality at a fairly decent price. A good affordable way to assemble a non-GW WHFB army.

Matchlock
http://www.miniaturefigurines.co.uk/Catalogue.aspx?ScaleID=14&CategoryID=70&SubCategoryID=327
- A small line of stock fantasy heroes and villains, offered under Matchlock's Lone Wolf line.

Midlam
http://www.midlamminiatures.co.uk
- A small-to-medium range with a slightly older style. The site has a special focus on dwarves and characters in winter gear, but has a variety of other figures.

Mierce (Bane Legions section is NSFW!)
http://www.mierce-miniatures.com/index.php?act=cat&cre=blg
- Carry two lines. 1) Bane Legions (formerly by Maelstrom Games) is very high quality, but practicality is not their strong suit. Line consists primarily of incredibly large and elaborate multi-part monster kits, and women warriors who wouldn't be out of place at an S&M convention, with a few "chaos"-flavoured "heroes" as well. 2) Templar's Forge is more conventional, with a fair variety of hero figures.

Mithril
http://mithril.ie
- Venerable supplier of a variety of Middle-Earth miniatures, from The Lord of the Rings all the way back to Tolkien's first age. Many figures are generic enough to be useful in a wide variety of settings.

Momminiaturas
http://www.momminiaturas.com
- A small not-GW fantasy line, with a style sometimes reminiscent of Avatars of War or Confrontation.

Morland Studios
http://morlandstudios.com
- A small line, consisting entirely of non-combat female miniatures from a variety of backgrounds (geisha, mermaids, traditional fantasy, etc.).

Nightfolk
http://www.northumbriantinsoldier.co.uk
- Range consists of goblins, faeries, imps, gnomes and other assorted oddities. A slightly darker and more mischievous take on traditional fairy tale characters.

Norsgard
http://www.norsgard.com/store.html
- A norse-themed game with a variety of factions, which is new and being slowly expanded. In addition to their particularly peculiar interpretation of "Norse", they also have some very "civilized" Orc heroes.

Otherworld
http://otherworldminiatures.co.uk
- Old-school style D&D monsters and adventurers, sculpted to modern standards.

Pendraken
http://www.pendraken.co.uk/Fantasy-c21
- Conventional fantasy, but in 10mm format. Nice work at a smaller scale.

Privateer Press
http://privateerpress.com
- PP's world is much more Steampunk than fantasy, but they have a large number of minis adaptable for pure fantasy. Figures often have excessive detail and greebling of steampunk, but are still of a very good quality as well as often being dynamic and interesting. Some minis are quite large.

Raging Heroes
http://www.ragingheroes.com
- A newer company, with many detailed and extremely fluid sculptures. So far mostly focusing on monsters and other strange creatures, with a few other figures besides.

Ral Partha
http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk
- Not quite their glory days anymore with few new offerings and a lineup that has its share of dated sculpts, but a good selection that still offers most of their legacy miniatures. The orcs, ogres, trolls and such are still of a high standard, with loads of personality and character and still compare very well to modern high-grade miniatures. They're also very affordable.

Reaper
http://www.reapermini.com
- Such a wide variety of sculptors that there's a tendency to be hit or miss (quality varying by age and and sculptor), but there's still plenty of good figures. Huge catalogue with a tendency to keep much of it in print. The new BONES line of figures in cheapo bendy plastic also offers some of the absolute cheapest wargaming fantasy figures out there, without these being too much worse than regular minis.

Red Box
http://red-box-games.com
- A large and growing line of fantasy sculpts, which - while still fully in the realm of fantasy - have a wonderfully conservative and realistic kit. Tends more towards the smallish side at 28mm non-heroic scale.

Rogue Miniatures
http://www.rogueminiatures.co.uk
- Mostly a producer of modern-era "not-[TV or film character]" minis, they also have a smaller fantasy lineup ("sword" miniatures) based on similar "not-" characters.

Scibor's Monstrous Miniatures
http://sciborminiatures.com
- Scibor's owner has a particular love of dwarves, as well as for dwarven-like intricately detailed and textured surfaces. Great poses, expressions, and attitudes (especially in the holiday offerings). Has a fair number of non-dwarven minis and is working to expand those lines too.

Spellcrow
http://www.spellcrow.com/index.php
- A medium-sized selection that covers a fair cross-section of stock GW-esque fantasy types. Has both monsters and heroes.

Sphere Wars
http://www.spherewars.es
- Medium-sized range of alternate fantasy, similar in some ways to Confrontation's Cadwallon universe. Combines some unconventional beastly folks, new twists on demons, and some humans as well.

Splintered Light
http://www.splinteredlightminis.com
- 28mm line of monsters and dragons, and a 20mm line of old-school 80's style fantasy sculpts.

Statuesque
http://www.statuesqueminiatures.co.uk/c/4421221/1/fantasy.html
- Small range of very colourful and characterful minis by our own Andrew Rae, with the initial offerings fitting the traditional fantasy adventurer archetypes.

Stonehaven
http://stonehavenminiatures.webstorepowered.com
- Newer company starting out with dwarves and gnomes, but with elves coming soon.

Studio 38
http://www.figurines-studio38.com/default.html
- Previously Kraken Editions, they have a decent quality line, including many anthropomorphic creatures if that's your bag. Unfortunately the site does not have an English option and - much worse IMO - is clunkily designed and does not even display their full line of figs. For instance, if you go to their Fantization shop at http://www.fantization.com/alkemy-krakeneditions.aspx you can see there are many more minis there than are on their site. Still worth a look.

Studio McVey
http://www.studiomcvey.com
Some of the very highest sculpture quality available, these extremely fine resin works are priced to match (not for the faint-of-heart!). They are concentrating more on their sedition wars sci-fi line these days, but are still releasing fantasy miniatures as well (albeit at a reduced rate).

Tale of War
http://www.taleofwar.com/shop
- Mostly focused on their very nice and dynamic Ron & Bones pirate line, but their expressive work can also be found in several additional smaller fantasy ranges.

Tercio Creativo
http://terciocreativo.blogspot.ca
- Spanish manufacturer similar to Hell Dorado (age-of-exploration figures, with a Spanish focus, and a flowing stylized feel), but more realistic in sculpting and kit, with a few figures here and there suitable for use in general fantasy settings. Great motion and posing.

TGCM
http://www.tgcmcreation.com/108-briskars
- 54mm minis with several fantasy/pirate/animal skirmish themes.

Thunderbolt Mountain
http://www.thunderboltmountain.com
- Tom Meiers' personal line of miniatures. Similar to Otherworld and Dark Sword, with a focus on older-style figures and more realistic anatomy.

Titan Forge
http://titan-forge.com/fantasy_miniatures
- Several mid-sized ranges of fantasy miniatures, concentrating mostly on conventional baddies, like orc, demons, and pirates.

Warhansa
http://warhansa.com/
- Several small lines with fantasy and medieval characters, with some eastern European flavour.

Warmonger
http://www.warmongerminiatures.com
- Older Foundry minis as well as new ones in the same vein by some of Foundry's longstanding stuff. Range consists of various old-style orcs.

Warploque
http://www.warploqueminiatures.co.uk
- A small range mostly revolving around orcs, trolls, halflings, and beasts, with a specific focus on halflings, zombie pirates, and "fantasy rednecks" such as bayou-dwelling orcs.

Westfalia
http://westfaliaminiatures.com
- A moderate sized range by several of our own longtime LAF members. A fairly comprehensive halfling army line, with a few humans, goblins, ogres and others. More to come!

Willy-Miniatures
http://willy-miniatures.blogspot.com
- A newer one-man operation, who mainly deals in fantasy-football figures, but quite a few of them are easily adaptable for regular fantasy - many without any conversion.

Wrath of Kings
http://wrathofkings.com
- Bizarre semi-human creatures of various kids. Fairly outlandish and unique sculptures, perhaps slightly reminiscent of Confrontation, only more wild and outré.

Wyrd
http://www.wyrd-games.net/content.php
- Primarily a steampunk/western manufacturer (though one with more of a wild fantastical flavour to it) with a fair number of good-looking minis that can be easily used in a fantasy setting.

Zenit
http://www.zenitminiatures.es
- A newer Spanish game with a sort of Wakfu-feel to it. The figures are cartoonish, but a little less so than Hell Dorado (comparable to Freebooter). Nice fluid sculptures with plenty of energy.

Special Mention:

Confrontation Miniatures
No website
- Some of the highest overall quality and best character in a major miniatures manufacturer. Also has a fairly unique fantasy feel, with many very distinctive figures. Sadly defunct, with many old minis commanding ridiculous prices. A slightly stylized comic feel typical of many French game companies, though more muted and realistic in tone than some other offerings.

Feel free to add or suggest anyone else - no maker too small!

Miniatures based on Arthur Rackham's paintings

I'll keep adding them as I think of them :)

Added.

Also, added Brigade, Cavalcade Wargames, Mad Puppet, and Wyrd.

Also added Thunderbolt, which I'd forgotten to add.

I thought it was April 1st already.   ::)

Hasslefree...Can be fairly hit-and-miss for quality. Sometimes the figures tend towards being a bit "doughy" with a rounding that obscures detail and figures...

Personally, I could not disagree more with your comments.  Hasslefree quality is second to none and they produce some of the finest miniatures available.  (Which is why I paint so many of them.   :) LINK (http://www.orctrader.co.uk/HFMain.html) )

Brigade Models
http://www.brigademodels.co.uk/Celtos/index.html
- Have a fantasy range under their "Celtos" line of figures. Mostly mediocre...

I'm speechless...

It's not so much that I think all that badly of Hasslefree or Brigade, but they simply do not compare with the offerings from many of the high-end manufacturers on this list, such as Andreas, Confrontation, McVey, Red Box, etc.

I would point out that I still thought Brigade and Hasslefree were worth including on the list and they will most certainly stay on the list.

For the sake of avoiding arguments in what's supposed to be a utility resource thread, I will soften my language somewhat in the OP, though I still stand by my opinion.

EDIT: Added Tales of War.

Great thread, Fram! Not much to add, I'm afraid. Black Scorpion, maybe? They only do resin nowadays, but the sculpting is top notch!

http://www.blackscorpionminiatures.com/index.php

The only problem with a thread like this is it's a "slight tad" more subjective than "fantasy, lead and below two quid". =) I would never include the cricket players of Celtos on a list of highest quality minis. =D
Title: Re: Sources for highest-quality fantasy minis?
Post by: FramFramson on March 31, 2012, 07:58:10 AM
It most certainly is more subjective, hence my casting a broader net. Actually, you can see in the posts above there are already some who would dispute your opinion - though I had to laugh... those swords really do look like cricket bats. lol

Scraped out a few more to add. Raging Heroes, Historic Art, and Tercio Creativo.

I'm afraid I couldn't really include Black Scorpion, because (other than fantasy football figures), I didn't see any fantasy figures on their site at all, nor did any seem really suitable for conversion or adaptation to fantasy. If some others really feel this is wrong and want to include them, I suppose I can.

Fantasy pirates! =) Orcs, undead and human. I'm not going to insist though - add them if you'd like. I agree it's not high fantasy and might not fit the list.

Oh it's no trouble. I might as well add them. :)

As for Forgeworld, I think most people really just lump them in with GW.

I personally do not think that GW deserves a place in the honorable mentions unless you're counting them for their huge tacky models and fantastic bit count instead of sculpt quality.
The quality ranges too much between individual models and armies for me. Some are excellent, while others are downright piss. However, I also think their quality has been rising considerably.

Gonna like watching this thread!

do not agree mate. I think Forgeworld fantasy range should have a mention. Especially because if we are talking about "sources" you have to consider that GW and FW are two different sources (you cannot buy FW stuff from GW even if you can buy some GW kits from FW) and two different range (mainly the same factions but no Fimir and no chaos dwarves in GW range).

Arguably some of the stuff we stock which is already listed under cheap minis could also fall into this category. I think some of the old Grenadier stuff is pretty excellent, especially the barbarians. If you agree, let the powers that be know and maybe we can be added.

www.forlornhopegames.co.uk (http://www.forlornhopegames.co.uk)

Whether or not we can get up there with the new stuff remains to be seen.

You can get most of those grenadier figures from Miriliton and multiple other providers, so uh...
What from-scratch-sculpts does Forlorn produce that they can actually take credit for? I'd scout it out to offer my vote, but the catalog is a little annoying to navigate and not clearly set out. It would be nice if they displayed the prices a little more 'out in the open'.
Hope I don't come of too brusque..

Not sure about multiple, but certainly 2 I know of (Mirilton and eM4). We are currently working with Doug at eM4 to release a lot of the currently unavailable old Grenadier stuff, and as such we do have the odd item that eM4 doesn't and this should grow.

Currently we don't have any of our own sculpts but are looking to expand these ranges (Robots coming soon). However, I'm not sure we have to be unique and supply our own figures to be in this list, just supply great figures (I might be wrong there, but don't think so)

No worries, can I suggest getting eM4 on the list then ;-)

I second that. I'm painting up some barbarians right now. When I ordered them they arrived without any flash AND had an undercoat. They were ready to paint.
Briljant quality

Without having had any of their models in my hands yet I would have to suggest we look at Red Box Games.

I like to add something to the Gamezones.

I recently have perchased some dwarves of them and though there are of good overall quality, they are a bit to less detailed and have some (not so bad, though) flashes which makes them not really deserving to be of "high end" standard to me. Do not misunderstand me, I LIKE them, HAVE them and I am glad about it. But compared to - say - Freebooter, Rackham and such it is simply not the same "level" to me.

With the GW-minis I like to second Basiliscus in post above somewhere. It is amazing how they have improved the standards, but after all these years they often lack a bit in the b-position of posing, due to their rank&file system. It is understandable, but nonetheless a point against them as "high end in all entries".

I like to explain high-end from my point of view with these rackham models (the old confro 3.x ones!!) - I am so to speak a hardcore dwarven player, but with Confro I realy was amazed with EVEREY tribe within this system - even my hated un-dead ones.
Posing, detailes and such ... unbelievable.

However, I know that the technical standards where rising, especially over the last years, too, so it is often hard to compare older manufactures with the newer ones.

just my 2 (make it 5 ^^) ct

best wishes
Drachenklinge

great to ponder and browse through this thread

All fair points, but as mentioned I have been trying to include more miniatures than not. If it was truly a list of the very very highest quality only, it'd probably be like... Studio McVey and a few other manufacturers with very small lines. While that would be a little more accurate, it wouldn't really be useful to people looking for particular minis!

Also: added http://www.warploqueminiatures.co.uk/

Question for you guys. I'm thinking of putting BaneLords (http://banelegions.maelstromgames.co.uk/?cat=1) on the list, but it seems like they have no site of their own? Maelstrom Games is just a big store... is BaneLords Maelstrom's "in-house" line, are they the official distributor, or what's going on here?

Raging Heroes http://www.ragingheroes.com/ (http://www.ragingheroes.com/) is currently concentrating on fantasy female fighters, with a leader, an 'army banner' pair and a unit of 'Not Witch Elves'.
Even people disliking 'unrealistic' style of armor and weapons (and scantily clad female warriors) praise the quality of the sculpting.

And, yes, you should really add Banelords http://banelegions.maelstromgames.co.uk/?cat=1 (http://banelegions.maelstromgames.co.uk/?cat=1): it can't be denied that they make highest-quality fantasy minis.

Don't see Kingdom Death http://shop.kingdom-death.com/ (http://shop.kingdom-death.com/) in the list.
Limited range, poses sometimes too casual, size (# 36mm) making the minis incompatible with most ranges, but what sculpting!
Title: Re: Sources for highest-quality fantasy minis?
Post by: FramFramson on April 06, 2012, 06:59:42 PM
Yeah, I don't know why they chose to do everything in 40mm, since that will only frustrate anyone not looking to do one-off showpeices. That's actually why I hadn't included them - they've got nothing to game with!

A new game featuring some bizarre semi-human creatures of various kids. Fairly outlandish and unique sculptures, perhaps slightly reminiscent of Confrontation, on a more wild and outré.

I keep discovering all these little Spanish studios! My goodness, how many of them are there?

Zenit
http://www.zenitminiatures.es/en/
- A newer Spanish game with a sort of Wakfu-feel to it. The figures are cartoonish, but a little less so than Hell Dorado (probably more comparable to Freebooter). Like most of the more cartoonish minis, these are nice fluid sculptures with plenty of energy.

I freely admit that this is all opinion!

A more relevant answer is that I would rather be inclusive than get into fights about who belongs on the list. So if someone wants a manufacturer on the list and they're not obviously terrible, then I'll add them.

Morland Studios
http://morlandstudios.com/
- A small line, consisting entirely of non-combat female miniatures from a variety of backgrounds (geisha, mermaids, traditional fantasy, etc.).

I think this is Greg Morland's personal site? I don't see his full name listed anywhere, though it certainly does look like his stuff.

EDIT: Not Greg... damn, can't remember the right first name. Well, anyhoo...

I simply can't believe that nobody has mentioned Mantic Games here yet! Mantic games is arguably producing some of the best figures for value at the moment!

Also, Wargames Factory has a few plastic sets: skeletons and orcs.

Sorry, I seemed to miss the reference to Mantic. I think when I first saw their site, I thought they were mostly doing sci-fi lines. Anyway, they're added now.

I seem to have developed almost a fetish for new small-time producers... but there really seem to be a lot of those lately! I suppose given current work prospects for young Europeans, it's as good a thing to try as any. It would explain why there are so many little Spanish startups...

I would like to add these three to the list but am holding off for now, since they're still a bit underdone. Origen is well-set up, but only has a single 30mm figure, the Norsgard site and figure line are still under construction, and Anastyr doesn't even have a blog yet, let alone a website. You should be able to make purchases from Origen just fine and soon from Norsgard as well.

Origen Arts
http://origenart.blogspot.com.es/
- Pedro Fernandez personal works. Looks very promising so far (and I can personally attest to the extremely fine detail on the one figure 30mm he has produced to date).

Norsgard
http://www.norsgard.com/store.html
- A norse-themed game which is still a work in progress.

Anastyr
http://radiodustinforma.blogspot.ca/p/anastyr.html
- No website or store yet, but a substantial amount of sculpting and art work has been done, which is the more important part after all.

I've renamed the thread to "Sources for quality fantasy minis". Just deleted the "Highest" (too individual and too superlative) and the "?". I wouldn't care to rename a simple thread about fantasy miniatures manufacturer but as this topic is a sticky on this forum, it should be have only informative, so no question mark and a neutral name.

Ax faction
Seemingly a 1-man, probably part-time, enterprise: female minis, 3 so far -2 fantasy & 1 Steampunk
http://www.axfaction.com/#!shop (http://www.axfaction.com/#!shop)
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ax-Faction/422693267753276?sk=photos (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ax-Faction/422693267753276?sk=photos)

A good pic of their 'Dragon hunter' there: http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=273116 (http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=273116)
(some screamed because the image was 'NSFW' so I post only a link to the thread  :D).
About her (lack of) armour and dress, it's well known that in most fantasy settings the protective value of female armour is inversely proportional to the area covered; she could have a shield she dropped to take her trophy; and to hunt a dragon she was more probably riding a giant bird than a horse: sitting on cosy down feathers, chafing on thighs is not an issue ;)

Absolutely sure. Found a few images of it online with the spartan games logo attached. Which also makes sense as it is Greek mythology. I think it must now be out of production though as I can't see it in their store either. I bought one from wayland games not so long ago.

What about Foundry?

http://www.wargamesfoundry.com

They have huge ranges of both mythological and straight fantasy figures. Some are good, some haven't aged well, but there are some lovely pieces among them.

Not all are currently on the website (WIP), though they're still mostly available for sale if you care to ring them up.

Foundry are on the other list, for the low-cost minis.

Plus, when I originally did up the list they'd been in decline for a long time - it was before the old management took the reins again. For now, I think I'll let them be the bigger player on the cheap figures list.
Title: Re: Sources for quality fantasy minis
Post by: Quirkworthy on October 17, 2013, 08:41:52 AM
I can't see Foundry on the cheap figures list and I'm not sure their prices qualify for that list anyway.

It doesn't matter which list they are on, it just seems a bit weird that companies with only single figures of fantasy models are listed, and Foundry who sell several hundred aren't to be seen.

I don't think that these have been mentioned yet. Eureka Miniatures in Australia have some very nice fantasy figures, in three different sizes.

10mm: http://eurekamin.com.au/index.php?cPath=87_100_101 (http://eurekamin.com.au/index.php?cPath=87_100_101)

18mm: http://eurekamin.com.au/index.php?cPath=87_110_116 (http://eurekamin.com.au/index.php?cPath=87_110_116)

28mm: http://eurekamin.com.au/index.php?cPath=87_126_144 (http://eurekamin.com.au/index.php?cPath=87_126_144)

Bad Squiddo Games/The Dice Bag Lady

Still starting up but a nice little range of miniatures that is increasing exponentially! Shieldmaidens and Orcs, but lots of classes and types to follow. Also importantly, I stock the largest collection of female miniatures from manufacturers all over the world. So a good one stop shop to get models from the list here.

I have been looking at some miniatures from Degrá and Figone. They seem to be of an extremely high quality, although I have not purchased any. Will be interested in hearing opinion of anyone who has.

As I understand it, the guy who did Degrá went to Forgeworld, but the stuff is stilll retailing through various outlets, e.g. e-minis.

Forgive me, but aren't you just distributing here, selling figures produced elsewhere? Is Bad Squiddo producing original figures as well?

EDIT: Oops, never mind. You do have your own. Found them after all. Okay, no problem, added.

Yeah, I don't know of a single all-around portal I could refer to for him. I do have Figone.

So, maybe show Cipher as defunct and add an entry for Soda Pop Miniatures?

I signed up for the one figure deal. If Baba Yaga's house is as cool as the concept art I may have to go all in.

On a side note, my wife is a Russian speaking Ukrainian named Yana and I like to tease her that one day she's going to be Baba Yana. Not sure why but that amuses the hell out of me, her not so much.  lol

Hi Deraj, do you have a formal store of some kind open? I don't really include kickstarter campaigns - just permanent shops. Especially since many of the miniatures don't actually exist yet!

Once you're more settled, I'd be happy to add your stuff to the list.

I'd like to suggest you might add to the list Viking Forge Miniatures in the US who picked up a lot of the old Asgard Miniatures ranges.

Some of Asgard's late (1970s) stuff was pretty crude I'd agree ('though as somebody who grew up in Nottingham and started wargaming around 1978 they are fondly remembered!), but their early 1980s Fantasy Orcs range (sculpted by a young pre-GW Jes Goodwin) were a major step forward and I'd suggest are some of the best orcs/goblins ever produced - these figures are simply oozing with character and malice!

http://www.thevikingforge.net/25mm-fantasy-orcs.html

And in light of a recent discussion thread here on LAF about "Orcs and the "gamefication" of Middle Earth" (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=86688.0) these miniatures are hunched over, bow-legged and slant-eyed and I'd argue fit the brief perfectly for "Tolkien-style" orcs/goblins!

Cheers, Mark

I've found them to be very responsive to emails - it might just be that they haven't made it onto the website (which is pretty new) or that they are put to one side whilst the animals and heroines projects are being pushed forwards. Drop them a line and ask.

Here's a list from Chaos Dwarfs Online that may help you fill out the first post. (http://www.chaos-dwarfs.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=17111)

Redundancy, given the CDO Wiki and 9th Age Miniatures Wiki, but also complementary. Wrote this list for a mate after this weekend's tournament, who wanted to know what other evil dwarf producers there are around.

Hoo boy, quite a list.

I will have to try and look at this when I have the chance, cut duplicates, etc.

Honestly, I've been thinking of asking if someone else could take over management of this thread. I'm already managing the Pulp figure manufacturers thread and I'd prefer to just cut it down to one.

This needs quite a few updates - there's been a HUGE number of new fantasy offerings in the past year or two, especially through Kickstarters, and I just don't have the time to get everything up and current.

Post by: FramFramson on June 17, 2018, 07:08:38 PM
Also, with a general increase in overall miniature quality, maybe it's overdue for this and the cheap fantasy miniatures thread to be merged into one new one (I would not merge the existing two threads).

It would probably take two or even three posts to list all the manufacturers too, the list is that long. The current first post in this thread has already been fully revised at least once to a shorter format because I hit the character limit, and the current list is quite close to it.

Also (and please delete this if an inappropriate place), Steepled Hat Studios will have a Kickstarter for a new roundhouse (http://www.chaos-dwarfs.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=17672).

Plus dungeon clutter (http://www.chaos-dwarfs.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=17676) and 3rd wave of Tjublings (http://www.chaos-dwarfs.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=17321&pid=285829#pid285829) are out now.

I wouldn't disagree with merging the threads into just one Fantasy Miniatures thread. When I get a chance I'll look to do a bit of Admin and tidy things up.

Edit : I had a look and whilst I can merge the threads the dates of the various posts mean that the lists of figures will be all over the place within the thread. I could potentially start a new thread and copy over still relevant links, etc. I've noticed that a few ranges appear to be unavailable now.

Yes, you'd have to check both posts to excise dead links and update ones which have changed.

I would like to add Thistle & Rose (T&R Miniatures) to the listing here.  We are manufacturing the old Vendel Fantasy line (owned in between by SGMM).  We have been casting and shipping for the last year plus and will hopefully have the website up shortly.

We do have a Facebook page and I have attached our current pdf list.

Current process:  Email orders to us and PayPal for payment.

Battle Valor Games has a very nice, quite extensive range of 18mm fantasy miniatures:

I am especially fond of their Scalians, which I am currently painting up for a GURPS reptile man army..

New range of Kev Adams sculpted Chaos Dwarves (12 figure set) from Paimon Miniatures in the uk. Slightly larger than the old citadel range (closer to the new Ral Partha dwarves by Kev).

Would make a nice Mordheim warband or similar for skirmish wargaming. The figures are available through the facebook page:

Well, seeing as this is a thread for "quality" fantasy minis and we haven't been mentioned, I'd like to toss our hat in the ring.    Our current catalog has around 200 resin figures in it ranging from Orcs, Gobbos, Elves, Humans, Dragons, trolls, Ogres, etc etc etc et-cet-era. And we are launching a kickstarter tomorrow (Oct 4th) with 200+ more figures and buildings.   We do make some pretty cool figures if i do say so myself despite my flagrant bias.   But as good as we are at making minis, we're equally as bad at marketing them.   🤷  Go figure.

Figs are labeled as "Heroic Scale 28mm" but are more like 32mm figures.
