Title: Maxxev's Fantasy Warbands
Post by: maxxev on April 06, 2012, 05:44:42 PM
So i'm modding Mordheim for the sole reason of allowing more ranges of models to take part in fights (e.g. to allow warbands to take, pets, minions, monsters, allies, etc.) along with trying to fix the armour issue. I started with Coreheim... then re-wrote a lot of the rules back to standard Mordheim and tweaked a few of my own, and now i'm working on the warband lists, whilst throwing random figures together to decide what looks "right" in a warband.....

Anway this is a Modelling thread so here we go:

First point to make is that i'm aiming for 30mm, 32mm scale so I can use Privateer press models (as I have a load of them) and Reaper figures. Main reason being is I have collected a lot of figures over the years which I have never actually used.... The majority of human figures will come from GW, but be converted to scale up to 30mm (not hard seeing as the heads, feet and hands are already there!!)

Warband 1: Southlanders.
The southlanders are very wealthy; they fight dirty and are just as willing to stab you in the back if it means they get there way rather than face you in honourable battle.

The warband to date:

The swordsmen & champion (the padded bits on thier left arms are where the shields will go once I have painted the models).

The marksmen: (swapped heads with swordsmen as I wanted 4 helmets the same for the swordsmen & champ)

More to come, I have at least 4 warbands on the go presently....

Only one figure has realy had any conversion work worth mentioning which is this lass, converted from a Reaper Grey Maiden.

there plastic 40k caden Imp guard legs.

Catachan actually, with the pockets shaved off :)

Who made the Girl in the South lander warband? Can we get a close up pic of her also?

Sorry missed her didn't I.

GW militia legs shaved down / Demonette kitbash with wood elf head and arms, I had to resculpt part of the hand on her hip (head is 2nd attempt as the first one had a face mask which I carved off, looked ok in plastic but didn't work well when painted).

I have added a picture in the first post.

If you insist :P lol

Here is what one of the marksmen looked like before I decided to go Crossbows instead of Handguns (And swapped their heads with the swordsmen):

And the other:

Here is the first 2 northlanders unpainted. You can barely tell in this photo but thier torsos have been extended to give them more realistic proportions (e.g. make them 30-32mm rather than "heroic" 28mm):

And the assassin prepaint with the previous head after carving and greenstuff:

And because it's frankly unfair to post a new post without anything new to the thread in it, here is a dwarf conversion that I wont be using for this project (doesn't scale well for 32mm (too short)), but would be good for traditional mordheim ideas :).

I should have a "proof of concept" dwarf up before too long, they are after all my favorite race.
Title: Re: Modheim Warbands

So I've upgraded the champion to be the captain (because I still can't decide on the other Heros for the warband (e.g. will the assasin and mage be heroes...).

And here is (hopefully) proof of concept on some dwarves (yes the bottom one has no right hand yet):

So as the southlanders almost hit the painting desk I have finished 2 of the dwarves, hopefully I can undercoat them today as well.

I did some more work on the rest of the dwarves, here is one of the Heros (probably the leader)

2 more girls, one shieldmaiden one more quareller
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-oLi7e9plQZs/T4q2GONHuFI/AAAAAAAAAMY/5693Cs3V140/s640/15.043.jpg)

I have 2 of these guys who may well find thier way into the dwarf warband too (30mm bases BTW as there is nothing for scale).

I purchased a boxed set of the Avatars of war plastic beserkers for conversions, I knew I didn't want to use them as dwarves, but I hit on another idea. I present to you my first Red Cap Gnome, nasty violent things, the Red caps. The Red cap beserkers are the worst of the bunch and this fella is no exception.
Once they kill thier victims they soak their caps in their victims blood, hence the name (not sure if that is actual myth or D&D fluff there, anyone know?).

and lastly a couple of random things, from various warbands
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-NM95I_FjARk/T4NJy0LfGHI/AAAAAAAAALo/rT4RpuuHLOY/s400/DSCN0788.JPG)

These two will be part of the forest elf type faction; a sapling and treeling

Redcaps are actuall myth, not just D&D fluff ;)

Your versions look good so far, I'm also looking to convert me one for my Steampunk setting.
Will follow that project :)

The southlanders are now mostly painted (no photos sorry).

I have got some sea deamon thingys recently (these http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=40635.0) from Manic Miner via eBay, which will join my MODheim fishmen (GW river trolls, Wyrd Slurid (probably) and PP Bog Trogs).

Still thinking about how to do other gnomes without using the AoW plastics (to get them smaller). Not really sure how to do that... lol

It alost apears the Vampire model I had arranged to purchase via this forum for one of the Undead warbands has got lost in the post, which is extremely annoing (along with a cool witch model and some Discworld minis for my other half). Very frustraiting, i'm giving it until the end of the week as it's from Finland (I think) but it's been almost a month already :(.

Hoepfully i'll get to Salute this saturday to purchase some other bits for various warbands (alongwith some more 30mm bases), getting some more wood elf types for certain and some undead cultist types, possibly some wtich hunter types and maybe an earh elemental.

So... I just landed another warband into the mix... lol

Picked up some Wargods Typhon spear guys pretty cheap which meant I could spent a little more on the rest of the models (I still spent too much, but nevermind, I didn'y pay RRP at least lol).
So I bought enough for a reasonable warband... no idea what I will do with the musician from the unit though...lol.

Also picked up some wargods Ghouls (very cheap on eBay (Ł1.25 a model), they will fill a gap in my Gargoyle warband :) I still have more gaps if anyone has any suggestions....I bought the Rackham gargoyles(metal) when Rackham went under so I didn't pay full price for them either lol.

Almost forgot that I picked up some slingers a taskmaster and guard type slaves from Dark age games to go with the 10 spear guys I already had.... so that's another one to add to the list.... Another bargin with these guys, got them at the old price, and discounted (stock clearence at Hurlbat games in the Uk), Ł5.50 for 5 models (for the slingers, the rest were more, the spear guys I bought years ago, again on clearence for not very much... :)).

Any suggestions for these guys beast(s)?

Hopefully at the weekend after Salute (where I can spend even more money) I can get some photos up of the southlanders in their current state, maybe even a painted dwarf on Monday.

Thankfully I made a fair amount when I sold off my LOTR Dwarves last month so I have some hobby money at the moment.

Maybe just stick a few quarrels into the ground, bowman-style? That's not really accurate for crossbows, but might do as a way to avoid actuallu having to re-convert the figure.

Alternatively, because they're kneeling, you could just put the quivers on the ground, as if they've taken them off for a better range of movement while crouching.

Well i'm afraid i've not had any inspiration this week and with Tidying the spare room for guests and playing on a game all of yesterday I don't have anything new to show.
Painting the house next week (please excuse bare plaster in photos below), so probably not much of an update then either.

But I didn't post these pictures last week so at least I can update on the project.
It boils down to; I have a lot of stuff ready to paint basically:

For smaller gnomes, I wonder if some 15mm minis could work or possibly better something in 1:72/ 20mm (Ceasar has some placcy dwarves, scroll down a bit: http://www.miniknight.com/caesar.htm). Not sure how small you want them to be though.

There's also the old Grenadier plastic dwarves (http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/Copy_of_Fantasy.html), not sure how big they are though.

Hi, i think they are probably too small for what i'm thinking. I've ordered a box of Kings of war dwarves to se if I can use thier legs + greens stuff an more night goblin legs to make some more... cultured... type of gnomes (or at least non-beserker type).

Cheers, the legs, torso and arms are from Avatars of War (Dwarf Beserkers), the head is from the GW OOP night goblins with a beard from the OOP Dwarf warrior boxed set.
Other bits include the weapons heads from the current GW dwarf warriors (or thunderers, can't remember which) musician's horn and a cloak carved from a GW chaos warror, the other bit of cloak was from m bits box, origin I can't remember.

Sorry to anyone expecting pictures, this is not a picture update.
I need some help coming up with ideas for the Gnome warband list here is what I have so far:

Blood Gnomes
3-15    members
No   Type
Heroes
1   Blackcap (leader)
0-1   Bloodcap Champion
0-1   Madcap (Mage)
0-2   ?????
Henchmen
Unlimited   Bloodcap Warriors
0-6   Spore hunters (the mushroom guys (converted to have ranged weapons))
0-3   Bloodcap Beserkers
Minions
?????
Monsters
?????

I have no idea what minions (non-experience gaining creatures (like warhounds, skeletons)) or Monsters to give them so any thoughts (on both list entries and models) would be great please

You can find the post in question here: http://maxxev.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/modheim-city-of-legends.html

Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

Well I would suggest if you are going to make, say at least, four total I would give one a bo-staff, one a couple of swords. Another dual nunchukas and maybe the final one a pair of sai's. :-)

2 Already made (minus arms), 2 on the work bench, may well make more than that, depends on whether they will make up the core or specialist part of a warband.

So I did a bit of work on the necromancer warband yesterday, finished basing them for undercoating this morning.

I really like how these came out, they were pretty quick conversions (only 1 day... lol) after I identified all the parts I needed.
I have had necron heads in my possession a VERY long time for these conversions, originally they were going to be used in my fringe wars project, but I knew as soon as I put cultists into my Undead warbands that those necron heads would come in handy!
Cultlists were included by the way so as to give the option of experience gaining henchmen to various warbands that were otherwise devoid of that.

I just had a guy on Warseer who said he'd wished i'd posted these conversions a year ago, then his brotherhood of khaine army would look very different... lol

What is the brotherhood of khaine..../

I wasn't expecting to get these "done" today (I still ahven't decided on how to finish the bases), but I did quite well for me, painting all 4 cultists, finishing off the Bane and painting the Necromancer I had only undercoated previously!

As per usual, more picces on the blog.

The "Brotherhood of Khaine" or "Kult of Khaine" is a humans worshipping to Khaine, god of murder.
They travel around the country disguised as mercenaries, merchants and that like, and sacrifice their victims to Khaine.
While they are doing their killing/worshipping they are wearing masks to not been recognized by witnesses.

Well i'm planning on trying to run the Vampire hunters campaign that the Wargame weaver blog put up.

So the campaign needs some NPCs to represent members of the town, here is the first of them (also would work fine as a soutlander): Captain Diedrich

Looking damn spiffy as always Maxxev. Really like this one. I just don't really like the pistols but that ain't your fault. Don't like their length. But I do like the concept of this conversion. Keep it up. Looking forward to more models. Each time I see more posts here I remember how much I love Mordheim and miss playing it and all the wonderful minis come from it. :-)

Cheers :).

If it makes you feel any better they are Duelling pistols rather than bog standard ones.

Well if you miss it, start playing it again!! lol

Yeah yeah yeah i know what they are "supposed" to be. It is the only thing i hate on the new GW Duelist sporting the same things. To me dueling pistols are much smaller with much shorter barrels. Of course the ones on the GW Duelist are quite beefy as well.

And i would love to start playing it again. Just no populace around this area that play it. Which i find funny as where i am located. Would love to get into a league to boot. Same goes with Blood Bowl and Necromunda as well.
Because of this topic i have been trying to hunt down all the different warband rules. Since the Specialists site isn't up any more it is proving to be harder than i was hoping for. :-(
Also been looking for models. First i was looking for was a Beastmen warband. Been looking on eBay for bitz and bobs to buy as i dont have any Beastmen minis.

Would be nice to find the different warband sin PDF to download.

Well no undead army is complete without Zombies and you need a heck of a lot of them for the Vampire hunters campaign (about 25, which is a lot considering I don't play undead lol).

Therefore I went with Mantic, for the fact that ... well the figures are a lot better than GWs old Zombie kit, and they are REALLY easy to assemble.

Only one pic of these guys, but I also have a pic of the latest skellies on my blog.

I also finally some Vampires at last (kind of important for a Vampire hunting campaign lol), no photos yet though.

It's a GW figure, on my blog i've been informed that it usually has a dragon on the top of it's helmet (it was 2nd hand).

I had a moment of madness last night / this morning... I should really have been finishing the three terrortoise paintjobs but instead I decided to chop up an Ł8 model....

The resulting madness however i'm pretty happy with :).

The Deathcap, leader of my gnome warband, any min now he's going to realise some bugger has stolen the head of his weapon right out from under his nose.....

Conversion uses the Avatars of War Chaos Dwarf Hero type metal figure, and OOP GW Night goblin head / hood and some GS.

I was going for an executioner type hood look, which is kind of what I've got.... he needs a bit more putty on the left hand side where I managed to cut a little too much off when shaving a bit of excess dried putty off :(.

I wanted to do an armoured gnome for the warband's leader in MODheim, plus using them as black dwarves in border town burning means there is a chance I might get some chaos armour, in which case the model can get used there too. It means i'm down one chaos dwarf hero, but then he's really too tall vs. all of the chaos dwarves i've converted so far anyway!

Don't worry about him being bigger, just use it as a descriptive plot device. Say he was said to be gifted of the gods for his size.

I meant actual chaos dwarves, not the gnomes :), he's bigger than the chaos dwarves I converted a few years ago.

Although he is bigger than the gnomes too, not as much, but like you said, he's either gifted or he's just a big gnome :).

Been a bit slow this week but I got a couple of things to show, however due to DST i'm not going to be able to get any new photos until the weekends so i'm going to stagger the release of photos so I don't end up going a week without blog updates like I did this week....

First up a female vampire for the vampire hunters campaign (more angles on the blog).

The next guys (Northlanders) are now almost fully painted but I didn't finish in time for photos today so you'll have to cope with the WIP shot until I can get one.

Ok another update, this time to the Kroot / Birdmen warband, trying to get a bit more dynamism (is that a word)... into the warband, one more angle on the blog:

I've converted up another NPC for the Vampire hunters campaign, the Kislev scout who recruits the warbands to come to the aid of the village.
Scouts also have additional rules in the campaign and can provide an early warning system for the village should the undead forces attack.

I really must finish something..... at some point. Rear angle, link to the guy who came up with these conversioins and parts list on my blog.

I haven't yet figured out what weapon combos to put on them, hence the lack of arms, the choice is dependent on wether they will make up thier own warband or be a part of another warband (e.g. if they are core troops or will make up a warband's specialists, or something) I still need to figure that all out.

The sisters were pretty easy to paint with the army painter quick shade though lol, a couple of different colours of brown, flesh, black, random hair colours and metals, quick shade (browns / flesh / Gold / Reds) Badab black (Silvers / Greys (Hair bands and some pouches)) = done.
Only took a few evenings to finish.

But still a very effective and well painted force i must say. Especially in the time it took you to do them up. :-)

Do you like the red scheme better?
I was toying with the red / cream scheme but as the sisters are not my favorite warband (though I love the minis) and I have already used red on the Southlanders.

I hope to undercoat these now finished Sisters along with the Bertha model I dug out of my lead pile (to proxy as the last Sister Superior I need for the warband) to finish off the warband.
Technically I think they could still need one more sister for a full roster.... I'll just hope the warband doesn't do that well... lol :).

Man your asking me to do some long term remembering. My books are still packed away, 2yrs now some day i need to unpack, but i think it was the Order of the Martyred Lady i liked best. I do think it was the white/red scheme actually. The browns are too muted for Sisters. Flaggies and monks for sure. Sisters have to look their best and stylin as they are bringing the word of Sigmar to the unwashed filth of Mordheim.  :-)
But as much as i love the Sisters their hammers i have never loved. The design of the one-handers just have always irked me. Wish they had a different design to them.

Cheers :)

Moving onto the next models ready to hit the painting desk, 2 more minion heavy warbeasts, my ironback spitters. I coulden't stand their chin horns, so they came off, also didn't like the pose so they have both been re-posed.

These guys are the only Blindwater heavy so far with ranged attacks, corrosive spit, they are not excellent in game (just OK) but the models are nice enough (without their chin horns lol) and I can use them as big friends of the terrortoise should I ever need them... also I got them both quite heavily discounted which always helps lol.

Photo quality is pretty rubbish, sorry about that, but they are still PiP anyway so a fair distance to go before they are done. More angles on the blog:

I went to finish the Ironbacks but I wasn't "feeling" it so I stood infront of the cabinet and looked at the hordes of un-painted miniatures, and I eventually picked some things to paint, normally I just stand there get depressed and go and do something else lol....

Oh well, it was a nice sunny bank holiday weekend at least, shame I coulden't go anywhere as I need to get my car looked at first (clunking sound underneath (hoping just a loose exhaust)) lol.

This is an impressive piece of work. The fact that you went back and looked at the details of a birch tree, noted the horizontal stripes and then incorporated them into your paint scheme shows a degree to attention that most people lack.

Very much enjoy looking at work of this caliber :D

I list all these details on my blog generally, in this case both miniatures are from Privateer press's Hordes line from thier "minions" faction.

Thank you, got to do 8 more skelles and a couple of ghouls, one ferile vampiress and... that's the lot, all done....

THEN I just have to build the entire town for the campaign... and the outlying regions... (i.e. a LOT of terrain).

AND my fiancee is now 16 weeks pregnant with our first so I've got to do a hell of a lot of work to the house to get as much finished as possible while I still have time.....

Oh well perhaps i'll play this campaign sometime in the next 20 years or so lol.

lol it's a pain when that happens isn't it, I gave up on the "your best conversion" thread on DakkaDakka, it's over 170 pages long lol (plus most of it is 40k and that doesn't hold my interest much lol).

Thank you, I have plenty of time to play games (or I did have at least) but having the group to play them with is where i'm struggling, don't get me wrong i'm going to a local club and they are a nice bunch of guys but they play thier games (mostly 40k and Warhammer fantasy / kings of war) and I play board games with the other people fed up with 40k, a different game almost every week, and i'm enjoying that.... But it would be nice to play some skirmish wargames once in a while lol.

OK well if you have the time to go through the thread, I just started on page 150 or something I think lol: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/233422.page

Sorry to dissapoint but the dwarf warband is done, a full 12 members, the max you can have in mordheim... though there may be a hired sword or two one day.

I did finish the last one yesterday, though he probably looks no different to the last photos of him he's had a couple more highlights.

The first two pics of this model, which is sweet looking by the way, looks like it would have been bigger than a dwarf model. Is this a standard sized dwarf model from the GW range?

Nice! I'm using these for ghouls as well, for my 25mm D&D collection. I've started cutting down some ears and extending some of the necks. They're really nicely sized for 26mm and good ghouls in that scale are hard to come by.

Well i'm using them for a 30mm scale project and they are shorter than the zombies lol, but I actually like the ears because it fits in theme with the miniatures I have chosen for the ghoul king, Harpies and for the ghasts.

The idea being to link them all together with a kind of "bat like" theme to them.

I found a few more mins over a couple of weekends to glue this guy together and I applied some liquid greenstuff to finish him off over the weekend, even managed to get him undercoated and started to paint him last night (no photos yet though).

Just so i'm perfectly clear there was no sculpting involved on this figure, I just used liquid greenstuff to add some texture to some otherwise smooth parts of the figure :).

The Tree Guy looks GREAT all primed. The white over black base coat is my preferred method also; it often gets mistaken, however, for a monochromatic finish...could explain why I have so many based & primed minis that just never seem to get painted. All that aside, have FUN with the finishing stages!

Well the aim of this plog was to combat gamers ADD by painting and modelling lots of different things, and while that is still true I appear to have remembered that I used to have a Circle of Orboros army for Hordes... because I liked the figures... and the Bloodtrackers I painted up (the woodsey elf types with Javlins) have put me down the path of wanting a Circle army again...

Oh well go with the flow, I picked up a starter and some other bits and this is just a WIP to show i'm still alive...

The rope style seems pretty basic. Have you though about tightly winding some wire together, drilling a hole in the hand and the globe so that they are linked with the wire, it would have a bit more give and you could paint it too.

Good to see this coming along again, how are the rules going? Very keen to try something like this myself.

Err, they arn't I barely have time to model the figures let alone anything else lol :(.

The rope style seems pretty basic. Have you though about tightly winding some wire together, drilling a hole in the hand and the globe so that they are linked with the wire, it would have a bit more give and you could paint it too.

Good point, I will consider that if I can find similar sized wire and it goes again :), cheers

Thank you, not just a hand swap mind there was quite a bit of work on that figure, she was holding a javilin mostly along the length of her arm for a start, plus wasn't in a running pose before. Cheers and I will as long as I have the ability and time to do so!

Just a quick paint in progress update on the Eshin black skaven.

That's a couple of cool monsters. I wouldn't mind a little more color on the bases, though, to make the miniatures stand out a little more. Right now I think they kind of blend in with the bases a little bit

It's my goal in life to never finish a single base.... not but seriously I still haven't ever finished a single base... these are just the "undercoat" if you will ready for some tufts of grass or something should I ever actually get around to finishing a base....

The logic in my head is to finish all the bases at once... so presently I have nearing 200 figures that need basing. The only exception to this is my Warmachine army (snow).

Well I've not really managed to finish any projects recently, but I have been plugging away when I could over the last couple of years on the basic undead infantry, but I've never really shown a decent photo of them all, I still have a few boney undead to finish so haven't taken any photos of them yet but here's the rest.

Great to see all your undead (and associates) in one place. I really like the skintones on your (Hobbit Goblin-based) Ghouls. How did you paint them?

Great idea on the food. RE: painting Halfords brand grey primer and either army painter strong tone (brown) GW Badab black (Grey), thats teh main part, then just finished the hair, straps, etc afterwards. All the undead have been really quite quick paint work, the boney guys take longer as they have bits of armour and cloth, etc of various different colours which takes ages when swapping paints :(.

The Dragon & Handler look good...the only thing I could think of for the missing arm was a pooper scooper...in case he lives in a neighborhood with a leash law.

Now those look positively evil! Really like them, wouldn't want to end up in close proximity to the giant vampire bat creature.

Mount and Blade btw, you playing the Fantasy mods? I was going to base my miniature fantasy background on a mixture of MBW mods, although a I've been horribly underwhelmed by the Undead empire in 'Phantasy' Calradia.

Prophesy of Pendor is the one that got me for ages and I still go into occasionaly, I tried the Warhammer mod but got bored of having circles run around me by wolf riders lol, the Total war warhammer mod is much better.

A couple more undead, not needed for the campaign, just to see if I could really, plus they could be used for an ethereal undead warband (e.g. Banshee, Spectre, Wraith, Ghost, Spirit), of course the fact that none of them can be hurt by conventional weapons would be a bit harsh... lol.

I bought the majority of them from Troll trader though as they had packs of 100 of all the plastic sizes.

Wow, great idea! I have a couple of these, and I have been wracking my brains for some ideas on nice WHFB Deamon Princes that don't break the bank - especially as I'd ideally like a few of them, and for them all to be different. Now you have me wondering if I can stick wings on one!

Not sure about the wings, it should be possible though, I would skim down the wings connections and drill large holes in their backs, put the whole connection in the hole and then make good the join if I was going to do it.

If it helps for Ideas i'm also working on these.

Swamp shamblers (half the unit, the other half are just more of the same poses), for Privateer Press; Hordes but I could of course use these in any fantasy setting using Zombies.
I only used one coat of blue ink on these guys vs the bog trogs I put up... years ago now to make them look paler / deader, I will add some Tamiya Clear read for blood once the weather gets nice enough I can do it with a window open...
And of course base them properly...

I like these figures a lot, so much character for skellies, much more than the old ones (plastic).

Quick and dirty paint work here no highlights as yet, and I missed the bosses shaftI realised after taking the photos...

I wrote a little fluff.. i'm not good at it.

“So I was down at the old markets, where the traders set-up these days, and I saw someone new, seems Mordheim has attracted yet another soul”
“This one was completely sheathed in her robes like she was trying to hide somet’in, She called ‘erself Emissary, fancy name if yer ask me”.
“She was hidden most of the time but she seemed to have a crown of thorns or some such, brown skin with some tattooed lines or summit over her skin and she was TALL”.
“I’d swear she had a fake leg too, some drunk knocked into her and she barely moved buy she just caught a stall and it sounded like wood on wood!”
“She’s from some place called “Bleakwood” or summit, yeh, yeah “Emissary of Bleakwood”, that’s got ta be a mark worth your coin fer the info right?”

Update on the painting so far - more on the blog.
