Hi,
currently i'm working on an Impetus-army based on the novels "a song of ice and fire" by G.R.R. Martin.
My focus is House Mormont of Bear Island. House Mormont is located in the north-west of Westeros and is sworn to House Stark of Winterfell.
Their blazon is a black bear over a green background and their motto is "here we stand".
Yesterday i just finished the first base for the pikemen.
On my blog: http://www.hvm-workbench.blogspot.de/ (http://www.hvm-workbench.blogspot.de/) you can find bigger pictures of the miniatures.

Very nice indeed :-* :-*
I like the mix of plastics you've used 8) What else have you got in store?
cheers
James
-
Looks great! Keep them coming.
-
Really really good.
You can't beat Impetus for making game units that look really impressive.
-
:-* :-* :-*
That is bloody lovely, sir!
Superb brushwork and great basing.
And welcome aboard!
A very impressive way to introduce yourself.
:D
-
Superb stuff, and an inspired use of the good old Perry plastic WotR figures.
-
VERY WELL DONE! The brushwork, especially the highlighting, & basing are EXCEPTIONAL. I'm not familiar with the rule system, but the modeling potential of the base sizes speaks well for them.
-
Extremely nice :)
Not overly keen on the Wargames Factory vikings. Or the Gripping Beast ones for that matter, but these heads work well on the Perry bodies. But I like the Perry heads with added hair best of all.
Did you use green stuff to sculpt the added hair and fur collars? I had it in mind to do something very similar with House Lannister, having been inspired by Frank's GOT entries in the last two Lead Painters' Leagues...
Will Ser Jorah ever make it back to Westeros and Bear Island? Only two more books (or about 15 years) and we might know the answer!
My bet is, he does. But George does have that habit of killing off main characters at the most unexpected moments ::)

As if I would ;)
I don't know what happens by the way... Just guessing ::)

I don't think George knows what happens yet either! :?

That's great! :-*
-
They look great! What are you going to add next?
-
Love those warm earth tones. Such a nice paintjob. :-*
-
Oh yeah!!1 Now we are talking!!! Stonking work all round....painting, basing to conversions.....bout time someone mixed fantasy with these minis.
Would like to see a warhammer Bret army made up entirely of perry minis.
-
Beautiful work, HvM. I love the head swaps. It really has the right feeling for GoT
-
Lovely minis! Massive fan of GoT and they look spot on.
-
Fantastic. Another big GoT fan, and I love seeing minis painted up to represent its characters.
-
Thank you guys!
Yes i sculpted the fur and beards (of the perry heads) with green stuff.
The next bases are some archers, billmen, more pikemen and some knights.
-
Looking forward to seeing those :)
-
Looking forward to seeing those :)
As am I.
-
Simply Gorgeous. Can't wait to see more.
-
Very nice work on the miniatures and just the right colour tones! Also love your snow bases; would you share your recipe?

I share this sentiment and would love to try a piece of the pie too,,,,,, ;D
;)
-
Finally translated your blog. I am still pretty inspired by what you have produced and am also currently reading a dance with dragons.
I am now trying to figuer out house to start with.
-
Brilliant work! Nice conversion and what a paintjob! :-*
First time that I don't see Lannister or Stark. Brilliant idea to create the Mormont! :)
What units are you going to add next? Are you planning some cavalry too? Captain Blood has done something really cool with plastic cavalry bits....[insert here the forgotten link...]
-
Thanks!
Very nice work on the miniatures and just the right colour tones! Also love your snow bases; would you share your recipe?
:-*
First you have to do the usual sand-basing. After that I add some watered down mix of GW Badab Black and a dark brown colour on the base. While it's still wet, I put some fine grass over it (in this case the wet ground works like a glue). After drying I put some turfs on it and finally the snow (a mix of white colour, PVA glue, water and baking soda).
Brilliant work! Nice conversion and what a paintjob! :-*

I will definitely add some cavalry to my Mormont army. Captain Blood's conversions are awesome and a really cool inspiration!

They look absolutely great. Respect. They have this no-nonsense feeling about them that makes them really believable. And I like the way you painted them. Great job. I especially like that while they do look like one unit they yet seem to be individuals, as they don't wear one uniform. Well done!

Cracking stuff! Post more soon... :D

Fantastic.

Great stuff :-* :-*

This!
It says it all.
Thanks for the close-ups.
Looking forward to the next installment.
;D

Great stuff! Do you have any heroes/characters planned?
-
Sooooooooooooo good. The colour themes (and the overall colour) are done so well. And those bases! :-*
-
The figures you have done are awesome, just a heads up to these new minis that I think really fit your theme.

I could definitely see them north of the Neck...

Very nice, Frank's stuff never fails to impress. Be nice to see some lanister royal guard and city guard conversions too, maybe we will who knows.
Cheers
-
Thank you!
Frank's Starks and Lannisters are a really good inspiration for everyone who's interested in wargaming in Westeros.
Great stuff! Do you have any heroes/characters planned?
Yes. My plan is to use the army for two time periods. Jeor Mormont for the time of Robert Baratheon's rebellion and Dacey and Maege Mormont for the time of the king of the north.

A shot of new W.I.P. miniatures:

Excellent. Love the second one from the right.
-
They all look great! And thanks for posting up Franks pics.
-
Very nice miniatures. Only the drawing archer looks a bit strange.
-
This next unit is coming along really well.
Looking forward to seeing them finished and based!
;D
-
Just caught this thread now, WOW great use of the WotR figures! :o
The painting, converting and sculpting are all very inspiring! :-*
-
Absolutely great figures. Stunning conversions and dito paint job. :o :-*
I have to concur with Stahlfürst though.
Only the drawing archer looks a bit strange.
For a bow being drawn, maybe you could heaten the bow slightly (with a hair dryer or warm water) and bend the bow back a bit.
-
:o :o Wow! Is the bear head on the banner free hand?? :-* :-*
-
I really love those minis! They're very well painted! :-*
-
Thank you!
:o :o Wow! Is the bear head on the banner free hand?? :-* :-*
The bear on the trumpet is a freehand. The flags are printed and repainted.
-
!!§?&§&?!
Lost for words, i want stick WF heads on my perys now!
What did you use for the bow strings?
-
These are stunning conversions and the paint job to match :-*
-
Thank you guys!

I streched a plastic sprue over a flame to make a fine wire.
After a summer break i finally finished the archers.

I continue being fascinated...
Apart from a very superior style of painting I also love the way you group these models on the base. There is an inner dynamic to the whole group that's so much more believable than static rank and file.
Continue posting, please! :D

I am in total agreement with Doomhippie.
Each picture tells its own story.
Wonderful work!

Fabulous work once again! I'm amazed! :-* :-*
-
Super conversions. Love the snowy basing too. Please keep them coming :)
-
Really excellent. After this and some of the other GoT-inspired stuff I've seen I'm very tempted to have a bash myself, just to say I did.
-
A continuing great project :-*

Thank you so much!
Here we go...the bannerbearers of the next bases.
Maybe this could be Ser Jorah Mormont in full armour? A shield with the bear would also look good i guess. What do you think?
-
Some great WIP shots there.
Shield or not, he certainly has a lot of character.
Well done.
-
:-* :-*
cool stuff incoming!! That minis is perfect for the carachter. And yes, a shield with the bear would be really appropriate.
Question: where does that head come from?
-
Completely passed me by last time: strings on the bows! That's dedication. The latest conversions look great too.
Captain Blood has done something really cool with plastic cavalry bits....[insert here the forgotten link...]
Not to detract or derail, but where are these?
-

I have just stumbled across this thread, absolutely brilliant conversions and painting. I will be buying a box of Perry infantry and WF vikings at Colours tomorrow after seeing these. Jimbibbly, Clive Mantle was Little John in Robin of Sherwood, and this guy sure looks like him.
-
Awesome modelling HvM! Great looking figures and a fantastic idea.
I will have to pick up some Perry Miniatures as well. I am thinking of doing a Mordheim-style ASoIaF game and your figures will be inspiration for my conversions for sure!

Lovely work and nice project!!
-
Wow! Just discovered this thread, lovely work!!! I have done similar things with the men at arms, somewhere on this fora..... :)
-
Loving your work!!! You should enter it in the Steve Dean painting contest.
When are you going to do the Black Watch and that lil wee mouthy fella??
-
Thanks!
Question: where does that head come from?
It's from the Wargames Factory vikings box.
When are you going to do the Black Watch and that lil wee mouthy fella??
I don't know but first i have to finished the Mormont project :) It seems that it still will take a long time.
No new miniatures, but i created a new banner for my blog: http://hvm-workbench.blogspot.de (http://hvm-workbench.blogspot.de)

This project is stunningly good :o
I'm eyeing my own Perry plastics with evil designs on creating some Westeros skirmish action.

-
Thank you.
After my latest conversions i'm thinking about doing a base fully of some individual Mormont knights and Ser Jorah. What do you think about that?
A shot of some WIP knights. You can find bigger photos on my blog.

I think, 'hell yes!'. Can't wait to see these knights painted and based too.
-
Great conversions, well done :)
-
splendid idea! :-* Lovely conversions: i really like the one with double axe.
A sort of a Mormont honour guard. It will be amazing!
-
Yes! These look awesome. Excellent conversions.
-
I actually never noticed before now, and i'ts a shame! That is one of the most fine projects i've seen around here in a while, my compliments! :)
-
Nicely done!
Where are the metal parts from? And how many armoured torsos and legs are available in the plastic boxes for this kind of thing?
-
Oh hello Warren!
Ummm, lovely work as usual btw HvM. 8)
-
Is that the chap in the series who used to be Little John in the Eighties Robin Hood with Michael Praed?
cheers
James
I'm pretty sure he was playing Great Jon Umber.
Cracking project but when it comes to the forces of Bear Island it's all about the ladies! With Joer at the wall and Jorah overseas Maege and her daughters are Lords(Ladies?) of Bear island and they aren't afraid to fight. It'd be interesting to see a base featuring those hardy warrior women of the North but who am I to wishlist on someone else's project?
Great conversions with cracking paint jobs. Keep up the good work.
-
Aye! Good point Soapy. Not to influence things myself, but Hasslefree (http://www.hfminis.co.uk/shop?category=miniatures~fantasy-humans) has a couple of Liberty/Libby variants that could be useful as a base, at least, and other warrior women besides.
(Hello Andrew!)
-
You know what....I think you could find a use for this wee fella...but you can't have my one.

Yes i'm planning the Mormont ladies for quite a while, but didn't found any useful miniatures for conversions. They should'nt look too much fantasy.

Red Box has a couple that might work size and style-wise:
Katherine of Chalton (http://red-box-games.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=21&products_id=125)
Greta the Pious (http://red-box-games.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=24&products_id=129)

-

I wish I knew. I don't yet have any historical plastics that might be applicable. I do have some Ancient Greek plastics, and I can do a comparison for Greta and those next week when I get home.
They scale excellently with Alchemy figures, and all the Hasslefree stuff that I have. Hopefully that will give you some idea.
~Eric
Edit:
I will probably be picking up some Perry War of the Roses plastics eventually to do a similar project to HvM's. I am going to do skirmish games with them. I am hoping to use RBG Aenglish and the Alchemy figures I have for some of the Northmen warbands. RBG miniatures would work well, especially the Aenglish, and some of the Halfbloods. Helsvakt might work for the tribes of the Vale.
Edit 2:
Also might work for the ladies of Bear Island:
Ylvfriodr of Ulfrstadt (http://red-box-games.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=14&products_id=107)

Excellent and most inspiring work here. I appreciate it, as it's inspired me to take my own stuff up a notch! :)
I really appreciate the Wargames Factory Viking heads on those Perry miniatures. I can't believe how well they work together. That's great to see... Now I'm wondering if the Perry and WF Samurai would work together as well....
In any case, nice stuff.

Really great stuff, love the Detail and the painting you put into this! Your blogbanner is great and inspired to make my own one, thanks!

Thanks gents!
On the next base Ser Jorah Mormont leads his knights of Bear Island into the battle. I used the new bear emblem on one of the banners.

Stunning work, Sir!
The banner looks great and the basing is sublime, as usual.
This is going to be one beautiful, awe-inspiring army when you have finished.
:-* :-* :-*
-
even more impressed... i'll wait for even more and more!
-
I feel that your really catching there rough and tumble appearance.
-
They look rugged and tough without being cartoon barbarians. Note-perfect. Your Jorah really looks like he means business, too.
-
Fabulous work and just love the little details :-*
-
Top notch execution :-* :-* :-*
Seeing progress like this makes me want to try out Impetus just for the basing possibilities 8)

-
Wonderful. Must be time for a shot of the entire Mormont host so far... :)
-
As good looking as they get. I was not familiar with the lore but they really tell a story anyway. Beautiful photography to.
-
Ohh shiny... :D
-
I must confess to not having been very interested in the limited world of Game of Thrones, but then destiny got in the way, and I happend to find the first book in the series outside of a bungalow on an island in Thailand couple of weeks ago. I picked it up, and started to read it, and actually did enjoy it. I had seen some of the tv series, but wasnt all that convinced yet. Now however, after seeing Franks fantastic stuff and then this, I must say that you guys got me intrigued.
You have some very beutiful and characterful miniatures here, truely inspirational. I really like the way you have presented your miniatures, along with the beutiful bases.
I wouldent mind getting in to this, but would love some ideas for what rules to use. I prefer skirmish games and not mass combat, ie. individually based figures. Any suggestions for this would be most welcome.
-
amazing!
-
Really nice figures!
-
I'm planning to use the LOTR skirmish system or a modified version of Armies of Arcana

Will be trying to achieve something similar regarding the basing with a WFB 3rd project soon.

You could try Dux Britanniarum, with some slight changes.

I haven't been on LAf for a while, so this thread is completely new to me. My reaction:
:-* :-* :-*
Great conversions and paint jobs. And great capturing of the GRR Martin vibe. I've just started reading A Clash of Kings, so this is very much my thing right now!
-
I agree with oxiana, you've captured the feel very well. I'm looking forward to making my own Northern bannermen along the same lines in the New Year.
-
Hello,
I am new to this forum and your Mormont army is one of the things that made me join.
Would love to see your further progress.
Regards,
Meto
-
Some serious threadomancy there my good man, but it's a delight to see these excellent figures again. Welcome to the forum!
-
Thank you mate.
I do plan to start my own tread for SOF armies soon, but I won't mind if I can see some more nice models before that.
-
Thank you guys!
Well, it's really a shame that I neglected my Mormont thread here so much. I am really sorry for that! But beside all those german forums and blogs where I got my Mormont threads i really forgot to update the one here in the LAF. Ridiculous!
Anyway, after that long time I proudly present you Jeor Mormont, the Old Bear, the Lord of Bear Island.
Secondly I also painted some miniatures of the Perry Men At Arms Box and turned them into honourable knights of their lord.

Man, those are outstanding! I've just shared your work on my facebook page (i don't have that many followers, but still i hope that it will be spread!), seen all together they are impressive!
now, please PLEASE, you must post a step to step tutorial for one miniature. I am really dying to see your method to laying such flat and precise colours on the minis. There are painters that are "better" than you on the internet, but i haven't seen anyone that seems that "confident" to put the paint where he wants to. Seems like you know exactely where to paint in any moment, and that's for me more important than a exquisite blending or some crazy detailing.
...please? :) :) :)
-
They do look fantastic. Combined with your talent of taking wonderful photos These pics are a real treat. Thanks again for posting.
-
Ah, right: also a tutorial for the photographing! :D
ok, maybe i'm asking too much. But you should definitely do those two things for your newborn facebook page! :)
-

Bootiful stuff. Not helping my itch for the Perry HYW stuff, tho!

Just came across this thread and have to say this is brilliant work, completely agree with the above.

As usual I belatedly find a great thread(courtesy of Captain Blood). Amazingly character driven figures, with lovely conversions and great painting(you are one of that limited number of painters who can make the paining of the whites of the eyes at this scale look good). Will now follow this thread with enjoyment.
