I've been working on Judge Dredd miniatures for years and years now. I have both Citadel and Mongoose minis painted, but I couldn't decided which size to concentrate on. Seeing how long it takes to paint Judges, I didn't really feel like painting up twice as many as I would every need. Well I finally decided a couple months ago to focus on the smaller Citadel stuff. I figured I'd have far fewer miniatures to work on over the long haul, since I'd never be able to afford buying more off E-Bay. I'm not finished, but I might as well start posting what all I have.
This also is the premier of my newest method of making bases. I'm using the old style hex bases for these Judge Dredd minis, and any other projects that might dovetail well with the gritty streets of the Big Meg. We start off with all the Judges I have done. There's Dredd, Hershey, Dredd on his Lawmaster, Anderson, and Chief Judge Caligula.

And here we have all four of the Citadel perps I've painted. I only have a couple more to paint, and I don't see me getting many more any time soon.
To supplement the perps, I'm re-basing some of my old Cyberpunk miniatures. Most of these are various Grenadier miniatures, but I think the girl with the mo-hawk is a Void figure.

I wish the photos were better. I guess today wasn't a good camera day.

Nice mate, don't recognise the perps in the bottom pic, (left and third on the right) where are they from again, (the cybernetic arm could be of use to me with my DEUS EX project.)
Cheers

Sweet stuff!

Nice work, have you any ideas what scenery you'll be using?

The middle two perps in the bottom photo are from the Grenadier Cyberpunk box set Edgerunners. I have that whole set painted, but I need to re-base them on the hex bases. The girl on the left is probably a Void figure. I think she was from a Militia pack, but I'm not sure. I painted her shortly after reading 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo'. No surprise there.
As a side note, the guy with the cyber-arm has "Bath Monster" written on his shirt. Because of that name he's become a thug of some renown in my games. I mean, who wouldn't like to attack a guy named Bath Monster?
-
Nice, wonder if we could persuade Doug to cast them again, (the one's that aren't currently of course).

I would certainly be up for one of each of the old Cyberpunk range, I used to have some of these, and regret passing them on.
-
These are really nicely done. The concrete colored bases should blend in nicely on urban terrain layouts. And I still love the Citadel minis, they've got so much character.
-
Looking good, my friend. We finally get to see Bath Monster in all his glory on LAF ( because everyone knows that Bath Monster is the star of the show - not that pushy Dredd fellow....) lol
I like the new bases.

Cool stuff.
I have a couple of the Citadel Lawmasters that dont fit in with my Dredd stuff (I went the Mongoose and Foundry route). Drop me a line if you are interested.
Do you plan to do the Dark Judges and Ape Gangsters? The Citadel apes are particularly fun figures.
-
awesome PJ! I wish there were 15mm Judge dread figures :( (I know 15mm.uk has some similar).

Thanks Cheetor. I just sent a PM. The only Dark Judge I have now is Death. I don't have any of the Citadel Apes, but I do have the Mongoose ones. I can probably get away with using them instead, since the size difference won't be so telling with a different species. Finding affordable perps has been tricky lately. They exist, but having them sent from England to America eats up any affordability.
-
Cracking paint jobs – they've come up lovely. :)

Probably my dumbest 'I need to have a clean out' mini moment was when I was moving out of a post-student shared house. This is just before the web became big, and I'd collected almost all the Citadel Dredd minis by posting a classified ad in the back of Wargames illustrated and asking people if they were having a clear out. I got loads of replies, and ended up with a big pile. I think I had two complete sets of Dark Judge, the Angel Gang etc, plus sky surfers, fatties, judge on lawmasters.
I painted a bunch, then ended up putting my brushes away for a few years. When I moved house, I gave the whole lot to a friend who was into RPGs, for nothing! And when you see what they go for on eBay now sometimes... o_o

I have two of the three Citadel Apes (not for trade Im afraid) and I plan to mix them with the Mongoose ones too. I mean, what size is a genetically modified (they prefer "uplifted" now apparently) gorilla or chimp in a suit anyway?
I picked up a couple of the Citadel robots for the same reasons.
I PM'ed you re the pair of Lawmasters. Hopefully we can work something out. I would rather that the couple of Citadel bits that I own got the loving treatment that you have given these ones than they sit in my cupboard forever :)
Probably my dumbest 'I need to have a clean out' mini moment...
Ugh. I hate stories that start like that. My sympathies.

I'm still not happy with the photos I took yesterday, so here are some I just shot. Hopefully these are an improvement.

As an added bonus, some mutants. These figures were produced by Dark Horse miniatures back in 1985.
OK, so they aren't Judge Dredd baddies, but I can see Dredd chasing the Turtles around Mega City One, can't you?
-
TMNT's are awesome, but please paint the masks the right colours, four leo's is a cloning spree gone mad! ;)

You have no idea how much I'm grinding my teeth here. For those who don't know, the original color images of the Turtles had them all wearing red masks. I'm sure the Commander knows this and is just yanking my chain. Consider me rattled.
By the way, I think the first full color images of the Turtles was the cover of the Palladium RPG. I could be wrong though. Does anyone know for sure?

Slick. I think that Hershey, Cal and the skysurfer (whose name escapes me right now) are my faves.
Consider me rattled.
I nearly flew into a nerdrage myself, before I saw your response :)
And yes, I can definitely see Dredd chasing mutant turtles around the Big Meg.
Im still waiting for some decent 28mm TMNT. Some day...

(Shrugs his shoulders and hides he's Eastman and Laird TMNT & OS rulebook)...
Don't know what you mean... ;)
Anyway I think that the first colour print, was the cover of the comic not the RPG ruleset, I'll have a dig around.
-
NERD-RAGE LESsening.
I do color flats on the new TMNT comic and even in the new series they all wore red at the beginning. But Splinter's Christmas gift to all of the turtles were there own colors and a pair of sai for Raph. Any of you who are fans of the Mirage TMNT should have a look at IDW's version, it's pretty solid. And the color flats are impeccable.
Those early turtles minis are still a lot of fun. Dark Horse Miniatures if I remember correctly. All cast in super squishy lead.
-
Thank you for all the nice replies. I'm having lots of fun getting out these old miniatures and spiffing them up.
Funny you should mention the squishy lead. While I was cutting the integral base off Leonardo his right leg snapped off. I was just about to curse a blue streak when I remembered these are twenty-seven year old miniatures. A bit of brittleness is to be expected.

Lovely stuff, makes me want to get on with my Dredd stuff

About time Peter. What happened to the vehicle you were on with?

We all hate you! ;)
Great paint jobs! 8) 8) 8) 8) And yes, the Turtles would have a great time running rings around the Judges!
-
Had a few more minis re-based that I wanted to add to the thread.
The figures on each end are Grenadier Cyberpunk figures. The middle guy is the Gorilla Gangster from Mongoose.
-
Great bunch of minis!
Cannot believe this game never was popular where I live :-I
-
Man, I love the Roy-Batty-ness of the guy on the right with the long coat. Lovely old figures and very nice, vibrant paintjobs to go with them. I like that you've gone with a darker, more muted palette for the baddies to make them distinct from the very bright and colourful Judges. I mean, good(?) guys bright, bad guys dark, it's traditional, and it really looks great here.
-
Do you think you'll be gettin any inspiration from the new dredd movie coming out

We really do need Doug to recast these from the moulds, they are timeless, (especially for me anyway the guy on the right, so matrix and Deus EX yum!)
Lovely PJ's mate sorry was gushing over the minis! ;)

Judge Dredd vs Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? If it's published as a Turtles story, they make Dredd look foolish. If it's published as a Dredd story, the Turtles end up dead, in the Iso-cubes, or deported to the Cursed Earth where they are last seen being cooked and eaten by muties.
-
Oddly enough, I just saw an ad for Judge Dredd comics being published in America by IDW, the current publishers of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They also publish Doctor Who and Star Trek, and they just started putting out a crossover series of that. Looks like this could happen. Scary, isn't it?
-
Great thread. I love it! :-*
-
I've been trying to convince the editor of IDW to do such a crossover.
It makes perfect sense with the Turtles having travelled through space and time in the original Mirage books. And although Dredd would obviously start off trying to arrest the weapon wielding mutants they would of course have to join forces to overcome Shredder who has been possessed by Judge Death. And we could have Mousers with bear traps like Judge Fear.
But IDW is playing its cards very close to its chest about the Dredd books so we'll have to see. I'm hoping that they start releasing them around the time of the Dredd movie.
-
Call the Exorcist Judges. We have a a reanimated thread here. After more then three years, I finally painted some more Judge Dredd miniatures.
Starting with a miniature that Cheetor sent me long, long, long ago, I present Judge Minty.
Minty is a Cool Mini or Not figure that I was very lucky to get. I was planning to paint him in the same style as my previous Judges, but he just didn't look right in the bright color. Here's a comparison shot with my old paint scheme on the first Mongoose Judges.
And what would Minty do if he didn't have some perps to deal with. These are two Mongoose minis, the Top Dog and the Assassin. (At least I think it's the Assassin. Can't be sure anymore.) Not my best paint job, but these figures didn't exactly inspire me the way the Judge Minty did.
And with no connection to Judge Minty at all, I have Walter the Wobot.
Walter was weally, I mean really, easy to paint. Green Stuffing all the gaps and smoothing out the seam-line across his computer screen was another matter entirely.
Finally, a group shot.

I hope to have some more Dredd stuff to show off soon. There are a few more Citadel Dredd minis in the pipe as well.
-
Minty is a Cool Mini or Not figure that I was very lucky to get.
No he isn't. He was the 2013 Frothers Charity figure and limited to those who donated £25 to that years charity, so yes, you are very lucky to have one.
-
Always good to see a Minty painted 8)
And 'Yes', Duff has it right.
-

Shoot. Should have known I wasn't going to get that right. Thank you Duff.
-
Its great to see this project up and running again Michka, particularly with Minty to the fore :)
-
Thank you Cheetor. You realize I'm back into Dredd again because of you and Mr. Saturday right? So this is all your fault.
I got a few more minis painted recently. I'll start with a couple of Citadel Judges.
I went with the newer paint style, just to see how I liked in on the older minis. I have to say it still works. Here's a comparison shot with two earlier paint styles.
And what would a Judge Dredd thread be without some Fatties? This is actually my second one. I don't see me getting any more though. It was a wild stroke of luck to find an unopened blister at a somewhat reasonable price.
And coming soon, Mongoose Judges.
-

Excellent :) Tharg will be sending me my Intergalactic Groat commission by thoughtmail within the solar cycle I expect ;)

Both schemes work and both are equally "valid" as far as precedent in the comic is concerned. More importantly, the both schemes work visually and each shas its own distinct appeal too, lovely.
And what would a Judge Dredd thread be without some Fatties? This is actually my second one. I don't see me getting any more though. It was a wild stroke of luck to find an unopened blister at a somewhat reasonable price.
Those fatties are fugly old sculpts but you have done a great job in that guy. I like the striped sleeves. The big seam in the front where the pieces go together has been nicely covered up too.
I picked up a pair of those old Citadel fatties a couple of years ago. Ill get to them eventually. They are comically small alongside the colossal Mongoose fatties, but for a concept as extreme as that, it doesnt bother me at all.
And coming soon, Mongoose Judges.
Great. Looking forward to it.
-
Well it took a lot longer to get these painted then I expected. Here are my Mongoose Judges.
I tried to add some extra green stuff around the waist to bulk up the figure a little bit but I can't see any improvement on either one. I do think scaping down the shoulder pads to flat bars is an improvement. These were some horrible castings, with many chunks of details obscured or missing altogether. Not the best sculpts to start with actually.
Next up, The Jimp.
This was a much better sculpt. I went with the yellow elbow and knee pads as a reference to the Eagle Comics color reprints of early Judge Dredd stories published in America. They always gave the Judges yellow pads instead of green which always set my teeth on edge. I figure a Jimp shouldn't get all the details right either. One more shot of all three figures.
That's it for now. I'm working on a couple more perps for the next installment.
