Post by: Yetis Yell on July 08, 2012, 05:18:17 PM
Howdy Folks,

I'm new to these parts, thanks for the warm welcome so far. Just wanted to get the ball rolling with some Strange Aeons stuff I started working on. My buddy Pete got me into the game and it's been rolling ever since (check out our batrep http://sarcophagi.blogspot.com/2012/06/strange-aeons-battle-report-chapter-1.html (http://sarcophagi.blogspot.com/2012/06/strange-aeons-battle-report-chapter-1.html))

First up is a cleaned, modified and repainted old GW vac-formed terrain piece. I received this from my buddy Wil who used to work for GW. I remember playing Mordheim on this thing in '98, shame to have it languish. Given that I have 2 kids, work FT and go to school almost FT I needed a way to get some good terrain onto the table, so I started with this, to fill out the table and not start from scratch either. I finished it with a combination of foam-safe spray paint, sponge painting, drybrushing, washes, flocks and even 4mm gems. Note the use of the FFG Cthulhu marker as a statue.

Here are some pics of the completed Ritual Site:

You can see more pics and more description about what I did over on my blog Sarcophagi: http://sarcophagi.blogspot.com/2012/07/strange-aeons-ritual-site.html (http://sarcophagi.blogspot.com/2012/07/strange-aeons-ritual-site.html)

Up next, a Scene of Horror, some WIP on other Scenes, objective markers, figs and more.

Wow!

Great tarting up of a fairly average bit of scenery and turning it into a fantastic centerpiece!
Well done, it looks great!

What a great way to introduce yourself.
Welcome aboard!

Thanks everyone! Looking forward to getting some more stuff posted up this week. I'm trying to get the rest of my Threshold team done this week. It's only two more minis which only makes the struggle all the more insulting  lol

Wow  :o

That looks really nice. I'd never have guessed is was a GW piece (maybe something to do with the lack of skulls!). Seriously though, do you have an details on what the original piece was? I'd love to compare to see how much work you've done on it.

Cheers

Thanks Andy and everybody else.

Andy, here is a pic that I grabbed from GIS showing what it looked like before. You can see it is just primer grey with some green GW flock glued on.

And another from waaaay back in the late 90's of the exact same piece, under the large Vampire bat, meant to show him when he ran.

To your point about skulls, there was one on the dias but I carved it out to make room for the Cthulhu statue I painted, based on FFG's Bag of Cthulhu.

Heh, we used to have that piece as a prize and a centrepiece for our WHFB team battles. The winners were recorded on the walls every year.

Strangely enough, that generic terrain line from the 90s fits horror gaming much better than the current "grim" line with pointless cartoon skulls everywhere. :?

True that. I also have the lil' GW graveyard and that is perfect for skirmish games as well.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Agent Connery stumbles upon a great conjunction on a New York hilltop and knows he just can't get a break.

Up next, my first Scene of Horror. I really like that the Strange Aeons game allows scenes to be whatever you want, model them as such and portray a story.

I covered a CD with textured wallpaper and primed it with heavy duty primer. I then used black primed Mini Mythos markers for the statues, which I arranged with enough room to allow for standard bases to move through the scene.

I painted the statues like bronze and added emerald green 4mm gems for eyes.

From there, it was straight basing of paints and flocks along with homemade bushes. I also made a batch of the same markers on bases, to fill the scene or use elsewhere on the board as pentagrams or whatever. here you see them with the large FFG Cthulhu plastic marker I painted for the Ritual Site, for scale.

Oh... this can't be good.

When I have all three scenes done I’ll post a How To on my blog for them all but for now, enjoy the pics and my fluff for the story behind it, since every scene deserves a story…

There are a series of locations containing elder statues dotted around the world in weird conjunction with each other. The areas these groupings are in seem to resonate with perceptible power. The statues seem to be bronze, with crystal eyes that cast dazzling light in seemingly random directions when the sun and moon is right. Most Threshold agents who were exposed to these groupings directly have subsequently retired due to fits of psychosis, experienced either immediately at the scene or many weeks afterwards. We don’t yet know what their purpose is in bearing or location or what significance they present.

When a group of Threshold agents attacked a statue with a thermite charge at a newly discovered grouping in New York, the local town’s population inexplicably and spontaneously rioted and rampaged until the National Guard, under Threshold direction, suppressed the uprising. Eventually it was reported that similar events happened at corresponding sites around the country and even overseas, at the same time, in apparent connection with whatever disruption the agents caused to some invisible balance.

Even reduced in power, this site is still terribly potent and deadly to all who go near. It remains to be seen if the threat of them would be bettered or worsened with further tampering so for now, they are off-limits and under the secret guard of the Threshold pending further investigation, though that's only for the sites that they know of...

Best,

Yeti

The statues in the first 4 pictures and the last picture are glued directly to the CD. The others shown that are mounted on GW bases are removable.

Great bronze work!
The little gems on your terrain pieces really make them pop. You get them in the jewelry section of the craft store?
I love the textured wallpaper idea, the way Ive been doing it was alot more messy, great idea!
I like the individual statues on bases, I did that with my Bag o' Cthulhu to use as objective markers.
Once again great work, can't wait to see the next scene!

Bushes are made out of greenstuff, floss and spray paint. I'll post a lil' how-to if people want but I'm sure it's the same as the many methods out there. I like to make my own for variety in sizes and also to control the color.

Great bronze work!

Ithaquatini: Yup, 4mm gems from the jewelery making isle. If you get some for your minis, which I recommend you do, make sure to get the glue on kind, not the "heat seal" kind. Some glues don't like the heat seal backings.

Right on Aggro!

So, here's a WIP of the 2nd Scene of Horror. It began life as a floss container. You can see the on-going how to on my blog if you want http://sarcophagi.blogspot.com/2012/06/wip-scenes-of-horror-rlyeh-gotta-pee.html (http://sarcophagi.blogspot.com/2012/06/wip-scenes-of-horror-rlyeh-gotta-pee.html) but I'll be posting WIP shots here as it develops. This one is a tad more ambitious than the first and the 3rd will be most ambitious than this one (more on that later).

Pictured is my completed starting 15BP Threshold team. First, there is Professor Forsythe III, a civilian armed with .22 revolver. Next is my Character, Agent Connery. He has a bowie knife, twin .45's and two skills: Heroic and Two Fisted (Ranged). Finally we have Agent Giuseppe "Scarface" Petri, armed with .45, bowie knife and Tommy Gun. Agent Petri also has the Heroic skill. (Edit: I keep calling the Lucky skill Heroic.)

They did well their first game, gaining a Map Piece and free Skill while taking no wounds. You can read their fight with the Church of Dagon here: http://sarcophagi.blogspot.com/2012/06/strange-aeons-battle-report-chapter-1.html (http://sarcophagi.blogspot.com/2012/06/strange-aeons-battle-report-chapter-1.html)

Of note: Agent Petri was a pretty badly cast fig. There was so much molten flash on the left side of his face and shoulders that I gave up trying to file and shape his face and just painted it as a mass of scar tissue. I think it worked out ok. I'll get a pic of that up soon, maybe.

Lovely brushwork, Yetis Yell!

A really great looking team of Agents.
Curious to see what Petri's face looks like, when you get around to taking a picture.

Those Copplestone figures are perfect for use as Agents, all the chaps in our little group have quite a scattering in their teams.
In fact, I have seen exactly those three miniatures this week in three different bands in our group.
Great minds?

Agent Petri has no idea what happened here so of course, he gets closer.

Here's the second Scene of Horror. Not so ambitious this time, a reboot on an old terrain piece I had built before with new paint, details and mounting/basing/flocking. The blood is a mix of Burnt Umber acrylic and Tamiya Clear Red. It gives a good wet sheen, you can control how opaque it is with other colors and cleans up with water. That said, it tends to give over-the-top results but since that is what I was going for here, it's cool.

More procedure and pics at my blog, Sarcophagi...

Here's my 3rd Scene of Horror, a mausoleum or underground tomb entrance. I finished it in much the same way as the others, only the construction and details are the difference here.

This started life as an empty dental floss container and some bits I had laying around. You can see the start to it all at my blog along with more pictures: http://sarcophagi.blogspot.com/2012/06/wip-scenes-of-horror-rlyeh-gotta-pee.html (http://sarcophagi.blogspot.com/2012/06/wip-scenes-of-horror-rlyeh-gotta-pee.html)

After paint, but before attaching the front door, I detailed the interior of the door by painting some spooky glowy eyes. This was a trade off, I wanted to add something to the piece that wasn't overt (but creepy) and also allowed models to stand at the doorway, which they can. Speaking of which, I'm probably going to make a metal door to replace this wood one at some point but this is fine for now.

I flocked and added crabgrass abound the area and some ivy creeping up the back. I had installed some some fence which I had picked up from Scenic Express (a GREAT company) and added some verdigris to that to age it a bit. Originally I installed the fence at full height but my buddy Pete suggested it was too tall so I cut it in half. I'm glad I did. 5 models can stand inside the fence.

I have a few more things on the bench like Night Gaunts, more agents some rehab on 2 terrain boards coming out of retirement for Strange Aeons. Finally, I played at my buddy Pete's house this weekend so I'll have a batrep up soon about the drubbing I took... good times!

While you have a great result with the Gravedigger and the Hound has came out really well, that Scene of Terror is FANTASTIC!

I love all the little details, and the hands and eyes certainly add that essential degree of spookiness.

Love it!

Everything looks great!  :-*

The latest scene of horror really is something though. I love the creepy eyes and the hand emerging from the crypt.

Great colors on the demon hound.

The grave digger looks really nice. Great conversion.

In my last game of Strange Aeons, we rolled Treasure Hunt. That evening was my team's second game and at 16 points, it seemed like I would be able to cruise with a good chance of winning. All I found was death and sorrow (which includes the Burger King stop on the way home).

I don't have many pics because the game was over pretty much when it started. I played T, Pete and Trish's teenage son, whose pseudo-indifferent ass-beating style both enrages me and leaves me in awe. The sides:

Threshold Team :

Agent Connery:Bowie knife, twin .45's, Heroic, Stat Decrease & Two Fisted (Ranged).
Agent Petri: 45, bowie knife and Tommy Gun, Heroic.
William Forsythe: .22 and bowie knife

Lurkers:

    Cult Leader with .22
    Cultist with .22
    Cultist with shottie
    Night Gaunt

The Board: The old Hetfield place sits alone and dark as the Threshold agents Connery, Petri and civilian William Forsythe approaches from the South. Here, the board is separated into zones, any of which may contain treasure, assuming the Threshold are left alone to search for it.

Awesome terrain and Lurkers minis by Pete Ceretti

Threshold straddles the sections of the board, readying to search for the artifact mentioned in William's father's journal...

The Night Gaunt closes way faster than anticipated. I seriously misjudged the distance it could cross and left Petri just inside the daemon's Charge range, which it promptly did. It crossed the board and got into melee with Agent Petri before anybody had a chance to shoot at it. A critical blunder was forgetting that when Petri won a combat he could have backed off and allowed everyone to shoot the damned thing. Instead, he stayed toe-to-paw with the beast and paid for it in blood. The Night Gaunt took Petri's tommygun from him, broke it half and then handed it back to him, thanks to Destroy Weapon. Great.
Agent Connery watches as Petri's face is shredded and Forsythe is torn to bloody bacon ribbons.
Upon seeing Petri leaving the game with a minor injury, Connery failed his Resolve check and charged the Night Gaunt with Frenzy. It took double attacks (plus his popped Heroic) for Connery to run trains of 6's +CC bonus but it didn't matter, he was outclassed in melee (thanks to the Gaunt's Parry) and could only come close to besting the creature. The Night Gaunt eventually took Connery out.

So William Forsythe III met his doom at the paws of a frantic Night Gaunt, trying to intercept a coup de grace when Agent Petri was laid low by the grey daemon. They never once tried to find the artifact, they were too busy fighting the Night Gaunt that crossed the board at tickle-speed. While Agent Petri recovered from his wounds at a Massachusetts hospital (at taxpayer expense) the Forsythe family had a second burial in as many weeks, the previous being Williams father, also an archaeological professor, murdered by their maniac butler and secret congregant of the Church of Dagon, Wannamaker. A strange symmetry was at play in the Wannamaker family too, as his brother, a Threshold conscript, died to a Formless Thing on the old Hetfield place. The slain officer's wife has joined Pete's Threshold team, eager for revenge for her husband and absolution for her brother-in-law's insane evil.

Somewhere in his office deep in the Northeast safehouse, Agent Connery stared at his twin .45's and obsessed over the dread he was feeling about ever firing them again and how different things would be if only he squeezed those triggers at ol' Hetfield's place...

So, 1 win one loss, Petri has a full recovery (but with facial scars) and Connery has Ballistophobia. Just another day at the office....

Great report, even if it was a tough one for the Agents.
Loook on the bright side for the team, though, when you re-equip you can add a bit more weight to the team.
Of course, the Lurkers will be tougher, too!

Nice paintjob on Petri!

Here's my version of a Winged Nightmare, until I get a better model. It's an old GW giant vampire bat. Think Nightshift, I suppose. I gave him static grass "fur" before I primed/painted him and added a breaching zombie to the base.

Just got in some Berlin or Bust French Resistance that I thought would work well for SA but the scale is too far off from the Copplestone figs I've already painted that I'm setting them aside, so next up will be some Lurker stuff.

Work+School+Family > Miniatures. But I have managed to build some GW ghouls for Strange Aeons, courtesy of my boy JWoolf.

Still need to clean mold lines, sand filler/greenstuff, etc. I'm heading out on vacation next week, perhaps I can get something done then.

Strange Aeons: Game 3, "Left Holding the Bag"

This is the third battle report for a Strange Aeons campaign that I played with my group. This was a 16BP start on both sides, with my team still sore from the last game that saw civilian William Forsythe die to a Night Gaunt and Agent Connery developing Ballistophobia. Agent Petri lost his tommygun to the Night Gaunt via Destroy Weapon. Still with a Map Piece, the team looks to stay on the cooling trail of  the Church of Dagon, gain some XP and skills though they aren’t sure if they are the hunters or the hunted…
The mission was “The Bagman” with me going first as Threshold, who had to exit the far corner of the graveyard with the secret carrier, "Monk" McGuinn, surviving to get perks. We used a 2’x2’ terrain board I had built a long time ago that has a graveyard, stream with humpback bridge, ruined Church and catacombs below. There were no special rules here, just standard rules for difficult/impassible terrain and the usual cover modifiers. The entire footprint of the ruined Church was half-movement Difficult Terrain and the water half movement no cover save. Everything else is WYSIWYG. The condensed results are the picture captions and there are more pics of the terrain board at the end of the thread.

Threshold team and terrain board built/painted by Yeti, Lurkers built/painted by Pete Ceretti.

16 BP-ish Threshold & Lurker Lists

Yeti: Threshold (rebooted from last game’s loss):
Agent Connery (Character, Command, Heroic, Two Fisted, twin .45’s, Bowie Knife, Ballistophobia)
Agent Petri (Heroic, Tommy gun, .45, Bowie Knife)
Civilian “Monk” McGuinn (.22 and knife). Additionally, Monk is carrying the bag in this scenario.

Pete:  Lurkers List
Cult Leader (.45 and knife)
Cultist (knife)
Cultist (Shotgun)
Hybrid
Hybrid

Lurkers deploy in the graveyard across from the church, advancing in a picket and listening for the burglers they knew were there...

Connery swept his flashlight across the murky dark of the catacomb. The wet yet warm smell of damp minerals rose to head-height, the heady aroma of loamy grit in the air and something else, like old cinnamon and grease… the team seemed to wade through the vapor more than walk through it. “Monk” McGuinn, the town’s professional antiquarian they had drafted this morning, stood before one of many alcoves and shifted feet as he held the grotesque ceramic urn in his large, professional hands. His grip trembled in the dank chamber and the moving flashlight beams silhouetted the group crazily, like a mob of photographers flashing away in slow motion. He looked at Connery and cleared his throat. “This is… extraordinary. Just magnificent. If Dr. Forsythe was here, he’d of course be happy to see this… the glyphs are… unprecedented but authentically real and the fetish stored inside is... amazing.”

Connery lifted his foot from a stagnant pool of water on the catacomb floor and shaking it out, unleashed his annoyance of… well, everything over the last 36 hours, through his retort, “I don’t think ‘happy’ is the word he would have used to describe that thing. And he’s dead, as sure as we’ll be if we don’t step on it. Secure the piece and let’s get going. We have little time before the owners come home.” He ignored the extra splashes he thought he heard and how the reflected flashlight seemed to show wriggling in the black pool.
Threshold advance up and out of the catacombs with the stolen relic.

“Correction. We’re out of time Connery,” said Agent Petri, who stood in the greenish light at the bottom of the passageway, looking at the daylight above, “I hear voices.” Connery imagined Petri’s ruined half face watching the stairwell, the mass of scars from the Night Gaunt still suppurating and salving as it tried to heal. That face resembled the craggy natural rock formations of this tomb which they had discovered. Unlike Petri, who wore his good heart on his sleeve, this place was evil and it strained to keep its secrets out of the light of their torches. Connery learned long ago, the hard way, that like people, the earth can be good or bad. This earth was god damned devilish and he was happy to leave, silently promising it a return visit from Petri with a cask of blasting powder for the troubles.

“Tick-tock boss, gotta go.” Petri started up the cavernous stairwell, not checking to see if they followed him up, the tunnel amplifying and hopefully transforming the distant voices he heard into what sounded like strange croaks and barks.

A shotgun wielding Cultist and Hybrid cross the road and make for the Church entrance.

When they reached the surface, they were back in what had been a garden path set into the foot of the cliff face. They had entered the ruins of the Church from the other side through holes in the cracked foundation, into a debris clogged cellar and down the crypt stairwell. Connery signaled Petri to cross the old cellar and gain the first floor above them, to help McGuinn and guard the high ground. If anybody was around, they’d have to make a racket to get to them or come through the doorway of the Church, which smiled, open, like a jack o’ lantern's missing tooth. He spun suddenly as he thought he heard a shuffle in the back of the chamber. He wasn’t sure they were alone. He noticed Petri staring back past him too, flashlight steady and .45 ready.

Only a day before, Connery, Petri and young Forsythe had flushed the Dagonite Cultists from their now-ruined lair in the suburb West of town, pursuing them East out to a farmstead known for bootlegging and human trafficking. What they hadn’t expected in their haste to run the cult leader to ground was the damned Night Gaunt, whose horrifically slender frame housed the terrible power and great silence which accompanied a murderous rampage. It is possible the creature was only delayed in fully materializing by the Threshold’s interruption of the Church’s rites before yesterday, only delaying the complete summoning of the beast that darted through the pine trees into their midst, a dim shadow of murder that left Forsythe dead and the desperate agents evading the pursuing cultists all night long. Connery and Petri probably survived because the beast was then considered pre-emergent.

Now they were adrift, midweek, a day ahead of a monstrous daemon and a day behind the criminals that summoned it.

2 Cultists hear the Threshold team clattering through the open cellar so they flank around while the Hybrids and Cult Leader watch the front door... The Threshold are trapped!

Petri looked back at Connery and whispered, “This doorway funnels us too, boss.” Connery had moved them towards the door anyway and nodded, his .45’s out. He felt something… something like electricity in his fillings or cold air in his sinuses. His pistols felt heavier, less reassuring and something troubled him at the thought of how loud they will be… too loud. The voices were getting closer. Crouching among the fallen walls and timbers he peered down the great stairs of the Church, across the courtyard and the nearby road to the graveyard beyond. Risking a longer gaze, he counted. Several purple robed cultists and 2 brutish, ugly men with a pallor he didn’t like. His palms sweated. Were the ugly men civilians? Why did they look familiar? Were they in a dossier he has seen before? Or on a distant street? He was thinking too much about their squashed muzzles and the too-round orbitals.

A Hybrid sniffs the air, croaks and waits as footsteps come down the stairway...

McGuinn hugged the swaddled ceremonial vase like an ancient sleeping toddler, his bug-eyes peering over the bundle as he tread through the moldering cellar’s debris. Connery urged him towards them as Petri offered an arm up. Connery held the vase as McGuinn flailed his way up from the cellar via an avalanche of mortar, dust and flooring.

Voices. Shouts. Footsteps. They were made.

The Threshold see they are surrounded and prepare to make a break for it. Connery orders McGuinn down the front stairway first and says, "Run for the car across the graveyard when I start firing." This was a critical blunder on the part of the Threshold. Yeti had meant to have Connery go down and out first, to start shooting Lurkers out of McGuinn's way but due to Command, Connery sent McGuinn down the stairwell first, followed by Connery. There was not enough space for bases to pass each other. McGuinn would have to run the gauntlet outside first with Connery hopefully killing intercepting Hybrids and Cultists after the rabbit ran, with three sets of pistol shots, due to Heroic.

The second Hybrid stalks the doorway...

McGuinn tears out of the doorway. Connery fails both of his tests to shoot due to Ballistophobia. McGuinn is charged by the one-legged Hybrid but McGuinn guts him instead! The other Hybrid fails his check from seeing his brood brother killed and suffers Stupification. The Cultist with knife on right side of doorway Frenzies and attacks Connery. Agent Petri and the Cultist with a shotgun open up on each other, sending spall and wickering debris into the air.

Hybrid #2 recovers from Stupification and attacks McGuinn, who then lands a clumsy but effective knife jab into the hybrid's neck. The hybrid collapses in a welter of black blood as he paws at the swaddled vase containing the apocryphal architeuthis tooth, which the hybrid dies saying that fast three times. Agent Petri trades shots with the cultist on the side of the house, cover saving both men from grievous gunshot wounds.

The Cult leader smiles beneath his silk hood as he pumps a critical pistol shot through Forsythe's waistcoat, for a Major Injury and KO. The Cult Leader picks up the tooth in front of Connery. Connery stabs the screeching cultist to death in the doorway with a wet thud. As the dead cultist slumps down the wall, Connery trains both .45's on the Cult Leader from the doorway as a last ditch effort to save the game. If the Cult Leader survives Connery's fire he can use both moves to get almost off the board for the win. But Ballistophobia strikes again and Agent Connery hesitates, overcome by panic and fear and fails all attempts at shooting his pistols. The Cult Leader smirks and backs away as shots spak against the doorway, covering fire from the remaining Cultist. Connery decides not to pursue, since the other cultist has now moved to block Connery from pursuing and has him zeroed. Agent Petri fires on the Cult Leader from the side of the ruins, hitting him with a crit hit but he fails to wound. The game is lost to the Lurkers and the Cult Leader escapes with his artifact.

Agent Connery looked in the rear view mirror as a bloom of fire and smoke geysered up from the front of yet another church. Debris pattered on the roof of his speeding car, one which he had hidden nearby. He didn’t see if Petri made it out but the resourceful Italian obviously had time to tripwire the Dagonite’s car; once a Mob man, always a Mob man. Connery had faith he’d see him at the safe house tonight. McGuinn was still back there, sprawled out on the overgrown lawn of the church entrance piled with those strange, dead... men? And also left holding the empty bag they had fled with, a feint. It would have have been great to bring that cursed vase and retched squid tooth back to HQ for study but as things were, plans change, sometimes on the fly, and sometimes, like now, it was for the better. Hopefully, it would take the Dagon cultists awhile before they realized that the relic they just rescued from McGuinn wasn’t the only thing taken from the alcoves of their unholy crypt, the death of the antiquarian a currency in the purchase of time via an elaborate ruse. Connery would be back and next time things would be different. He patted his bulging pocket and wisps of grey-blue vapor puffed out of the mouth-like pocket, like a smoking monkey he once saw at a carnival. He laughed at that, a strained, more exasperated-than-merry chortle and imagined the Cult Leader, wide-eyed, throttled in Connery's bare hands.

He drove East towards the safe house.“Next time... it will be different. Everything will be different.”

Smokezombie: that model, and others of its ilk are from Rattrap Productions, which I highly recommend. The ones in my pictures were painted by my boy Pete. We'll have to get a better pic up because the pattern he painted on the jeff cap rocks. I was thinking of gettin some of my own to paint up too, they are great figs, though I'm not exactly sure where you can buy these. I didn't see them on the website below. Anybody else have info on this?

This week I picked up probably the most fun kit I've "tackled" in awhile... a waterline rowboat from Hamm River models.

http://www.hammriver.com/Hamm_River_Model_Products/Maritime.html (http://www.hammriver.com/Hamm_River_Model_Products/Maritime.html)

I got this boat for a 4'x4' terrain board I had built that has a jetty/dock and shoreline. Seems appropriate to have some Threshold agents set up in a boat if the ocean is their deployment zone. At very least, I'll use it to dress the scene the right way.

I picked up the Hamm River rowboat on Ebay for US$8.00 plus shipping, total US$10, not a bad deal at all for what you get. It was well-packed in a padded envelope, arrived on time and minimal assembly/paint is required. There are 3 styles of rowboat available (collect 'em all!)

It is a one-piece, open-mold resin hull with what looks like laser-etched balsa oars. Thwarts for the inside of the boat are plastic sprue. I simply cleaned the mold lines at the bottom of the boat and spray-primed everything white. Use a sharp Xacto to trim the wood sprue away from the oars... CAREFULLY.

I did two coats of Citadel Graveyard Earth inside the boat, brushing the same direction each coat. I painted the thwarts separately in a  faux wood style by using a  ragged, long-haired flat brush, having backbrushed the wet paint (one coat) into stripes, like the grain of wood planks. After they dried I trimmed them and glued them down, checking the clearance of 2x2" bases in the boat. Perfect!

The hull was just a wash of flow enhancer and Sage Green craft paint over the primer, dried on wax paper. The dried, pooled green paint on the bottom even looks good as a battered hull.

From unpacking to finish and placement on the table it was probably an hour of effort, if that and the boat holds two 28mm figs perfectly.

I give the kit an A for any Strange Aeons players who want a solid waterline boat for their games. I'll probably pick up more for no other reason than how much fun they are to put together. I also want to get their $25 # 270 Freight pack, which has 60 pieces... that's a fantastic deal. http://www.hammriver.com/Hamm_River_Model_Products/Freight.html (http://www.hammriver.com/Hamm_River_Model_Products/Freight.html)

You can get most of these items on Ebay from what I've seen.

Are there boat rules for Strange Aeons somewhere?

My suggested Row boat rules for our Strange Aeons:

Row Boat

Capacity: 2 standard-based (2") Human/Humanoid models. One model may roll vs Dexterity to row, each Action. If passed, move boat that model's full Movement distance. If failed, go half Movement speed. I'd give it Constitution 7 and 3 wounds before it sinks. Swimming models use an action to swim half Movement and water gives a 6+ save for concealed silhouette. Boat grants 6+ cover save to models in the boat (even on land!) All embarked models count weapons as Ready when boat is in water.

There are many ideas to consider for small boats in Strange Aeons: Fighting amphibious models in water next to the boat, capsizing, weather/tide, fighting in the boat! Have fun with it and share any ideas you have! (Cough, Uncle Mike, Cough)

We have had rules for boats around the shop for quite a while. We are currently working on rules for land vehicles as well. Once they have been tested and slashed and whatnot they will appear in Shocking Tales #4 and should be available for use in regular games as well as the gigantic Black Dossier case file included in #4... :-X ;)

As it sits we have rules for a Canoe, Row Boat, Fishing Trawler and Steam Ship. Any thoughts on if this is a 'complete' enough list? Any problems that plague said ships of the '20's and '30's? Any ship aficionados out there want to chime in?

Powerboat. In the pulp movies they are always racing about on an Inboard powerboat.

And a Tugboat, can't forget the Tug going out to investigate and pull in the abandoned freighter.

Sounds awesome, Uncle Mike. Did you guys consider submarines and monitors at all? I suppose a monitor could count as a steamship.

There are many awesome waterline sub models and a sub features in at least one great Lovecraft story. Getting J. Verne's Nautilus onto the board would be sweet. I think monitors were used until the end of WW2 but I could be wrong.

Maybe a sailboat or riverboat? Maybe a raft as well (think swamps and such).

Interlude

The Threshold Archive sub-basement office was almost entirely yellow light. The quality was of goldenrod parchment and even the dust motes that hung in the air seemed to have their own ancient pallor, like moons bathing in corona. Snaking piles of paper and book stacks grew like musty stalagmites from the floor, leaving a well-worn goat path from the door to the right of the file cabinets, to the left of the desk and then straight on to the window just below the ceiling. In the center of it all was Dr. Ocation, as old and dry as the room he ruled, his archive a collective shrive of a world which people must not know.

Petri looked over a crop of papers that had book spines jutting out at intervals like vertebrae, up the column of tinder. He was flicking the stack with his fingertips, seeing that they were dated older than his great grandfather… and that was just the document at the top of the chest-high assemblage.

No human would stack books like this and never knock them down, over what seemed like more than 100 years of shoddy storage, though that couldn’t be. The Threshold was younger than this. He rubbed his hand on his pants.

“Which pile in these archives has the Declaration of Independence, doctor?”
“Agent Petri, this office only contains original, meritorious documents. Not falsified writs of Freemasonry. And this is one archive, not two. Archive-ah! Archivezzzz-ah! Which pile in this archive-ah has the Degradation of Subservience?”

Dr. Ocation glided around the stack leaning over his desk and handed Petri a cracked brown leather dossier which opened to reveal pages upon pages of Italian text and hand-drawn maps. The letterhead was the Vatican sigil. Petri sighed, but then held his breath right away as the dust danced along the path of his exhalation, like dolphins in a bow wake. He remitted the cough he owed.

“Agent Petri, in there you will read everything that you need to know about what Agent Connery took from that Dagonite church weeks ago and maybe, just perhaps… why he hasn’t returned yet? I trust you haven’t forgotten your native tongue?”

Petri raised his brow in mock alarm, though he knew better. “Doc, why is it whenever you hear from some far-flung cousin of yours about some deep hole in the Earth they’ve uncovered you call me and Connery?”

Ocation flicked a crooked index finger at Petri and mouthed, “R-E-A-D”.

Agent Petri coughed again, unbuttoned his trench coat and balanced his lucky hat on the pile which seemed least likely to crush him if toppled. He scanned the first page and stopped suddenly, reading over the sentence that froze him in his verbal tracks. Looking up, Petri matched Ocation’s watery gaze. “I called you because I always call your group and Connery always answers. Of the things you both experienced of late, Connery initiated on his own accord, as is his right as a field agent. But…” A cloud passed outside, flooding the floor with deepening blue-grey shadows like cave pools, as if the room slowly was slowly sinking in dark water.

“Petri, do not take lightly what you hold in your hand. If you want to save Connery from what he has done then you better be a quick student. Pack your bag. You are going to Nepal.”

Petri couldn’t stop reading as Ocation spoke, and he protested dreamily as if his heart was not in the exchange, “But doc, I gotta find Connery. We have to link up about this god damned cult of yours. It’s everywhere.”

Dr. Ocation was floating up from his desk towards the ceiling, his now-smoky form transparent, a daguerreotype in a colorfully-painted gallery. As the doctor faded into the gloom of the office, Petri stood up and put his lucky fedora back on. Dr. Ocation’s voice came to him as a diminishing whisper, “My boy, Connery is in Nepal. And as you said, they are everywhere…. ”

Petri stood in the dark room for a few minutes, digesting what the doctor had said. He turned and picked his way through the piles, closed the oaken door with a glun-dunk and struck it with an ornate lead padlock.  He pocketed the keys spinning on his finger, gunslinger style. The junior agent tried and failed to catch Petri’s gaze and said, “Well boss? What did ol’ spooky give you?”

Petri tucked the dossier under his arm, then nudged his charge down the hallway.

“Squid-bait, Dr. Ocation didn’t give me anything. He gave Connery a second chance, that’s what. Let’s pack, we’ve a boat to catch.”

Apparently the best time to catch up on painting is during the biggest hurricane/storm cell to hit the Eastern seaboard of the United States. We've been rocking and rolling all day and the worst is due in between now (8:39PM Eastern) and 2AM Eastern. We are in the eye of the storm right now, I think. The lights are flickering so we'll see how long we have before we go to flashlights but that is an easy tradeoff considering millions are without power.

We are 100+ miles from the coast and the rain/air outside is definitely ocean water. Awesome.

Anyway, here is a WIP shot of some GW ghouls, intended for Strange Aeons. I knocked out most of the painting for this group today, needs some detailing and smoothing.

They look like stone gargoyles or something. While they look great, the painting is spot on, I think a cyan color basecoat would've made them more ghoul and less ghost/stonework.

Great models!

Thanks Aggro! We made it through just fine. The East got the worst of it though. Poor New Jersey and New York. it was crazy, a storm that spanned from North Carolina to Pittsburgh to Canada at the same time... the stars were right.

SuperflyTNT: I hear you, thanks for the crit. They're still WIP and will get some dirtying up to make them filthy, the grime will "warm them up". A few will have gore like they've been feeding. They do have fleshtone on them as well but that washes out in pics. That said, the fact that they blend in with cemetery fixtures is exactly what I was after, like albino cave newts or something like Gollum. Their midtone color is cyan tinted with white so the blue you mention is there but I did them in a more blackline style to give them that spooky-contrasty look. As with everything, it’s all about how it comes together in the end.

Strange Tales #3 sees lots of super-sized gribblies inside, new Lurkers just waiting to make you re-equip your Threshold team (again).

I was smitten by a few things in the Black Dossier but the Venus Fly Trap was something I already had my eye on doing as a Scene of Horror. So, I was thrilled to see a 2 point Mutant Venus Fly Trap and Plant rules staring back at me from pages 11 and 12. I love it when a plan comes together.

I hit the pet store on the way home and grabbed the “Naturalist Flora” terrarium decoration that I saw a bit ago, promising that someday I’d drop the US $12 and turn it into Strange Aeons terrain. You can find these on Ebay too. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Zoo-Med-Naturalistic-Flora-Terrarium-Plant-Venus-Flytrap-Tropical-BU-47-/360491567960?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53eef8cb58 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Zoo-Med-Naturalistic-Flora-Terrarium-Plant-Venus-Flytrap-Tropical-BU-47-/360491567960?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53eef8cb58)

With barely a change in plan, I popped it out of the package, trimmed it so it fit on a CD, hot glued it on and textured it with my homemade brand of “stinky stuff”, aka texture mud. It’s drying now. Tomorrow I will mask the plants and zap the base with water based spray, detailing as usual.

You could easily scratch build something similar with false eyelashes, aquarium plants, strips of paper and floral wire but I just don’t have time for that. Stay tuned!

Annnnnd... I'm back. I have been stupid-busy with school but I wanted to post up a new-ish addition to my Strange Aeons stable.

Here's a 2 piece run down ramshackle of a bootlegger loading zone for our Strange Aeons games. Obviously, Agent Petri opened the shambling horror barrel instead of the bourbon barrel. This is an old piece that I inherited from a buddy, so I rehabbed it, flocked/refinished it and now it's in the collection. It is 2 piece and can be used separately from each other. It sat in a bag for some time, not really suited to the look of 40k or Warmachine but when it comes to the 1920's-30's aesthetic, it was a natural fit. I also added the painted die-cast truck and piles of crates for more terrain within the lot, all movable. More pics are at my blog.

Also on the table are 4 new agents, a 99% finished pack of ghouls and a just-primed Bones werewolf. No idea when I'll get these done but hopefully it is soon. In the meantime, enjoy. I hope everybody is doing well out there.

Thanks peeps! Mason: I've just been really buried at work and school, priority time going to my kids and wife. I've only stabbed paint at a few miniatures lately and I haven't been as productive as I'd like to be. C'est la vie.

Here's a pic from a skirmish I set up to test some stuff out a few nights back, thought the shadows were creepy on the favorite scene of horror...

I then added lights for atmosphere.

Howdy everybody, I am back from the dead, along with my Strange Aeons projects that have piled up over the Spring. Well, I finally graduated last month and have pulled out the brushes again, so I thought I'd share the Bones Werewolf I recently picked up and finished over 2 nights of painting. While I am anxious to get him into a game, I have heard what he can do to Threshold, so... I am not rushing to fast to fight one.

I have a lot on my plate with some buildings in the works, more Threshold, more Lurkers and the start of a new story arc for Agent Petri. Looking forward to catching up on what everybody else has been doing and it is good to be back.

Best,

Yeti

"Listen! You smell something?"

I'm putting together a how-to on this, should be up on my blog http://www.sarcophagi.blogspot.com/ (http://www.sarcophagi.blogspot.com/) shortly but for now, here are some shots of my LED-lit BONES banshee. Simply put, I cut her off her original base, found a good position over the bulb where the lights illuminate her the most, glued her down and wrapped the base in green polyfiber material I picked up last Halloween, letting the light diffuse everything together. The green LED unit itself was previously prepped and mounted on a standard 1" base. I have a few more of these lit ghosts in the works but wanted to share this one now.

Holy crud... it has been almost a year since I posted? Sorry for the silence. Well, you are rich if Real Life keeps you busy enough so that you cannot paint but it sure doesn't feel like living. Ammiright?

Anyway, painted me a Fishman for the mighty Strange Aeons, a warm-up of sorts. I can't recommend this model enough. Fun to paint, looks menacing-yet-Innsmouthy and it is three bucks US. Gonna pick me up one just to make a swimming version like Uncle Mike's amazing models.

More details and an Innsmouthy pic at my blog if you are into that kind of thing. Also in the works: Looking forward to getting my Threshold tooled up for The Problem with Dead Things before Halloween with a new creepy graveyard!

All,

Hope everyone is well. I've been playing a few other games and generally busy with life but my group is getting ready to do another Strange Aeons campaign shortly, so the production has kicked up for stands of trees and other terrain elements.

Along that road I noticed another cool BONES fig that would make a good ghost, so I did it up in the previous fashion described earlier in this thread. I finally did a tutorial on my blog, which I promised before and failed to do, so check it out here: Reaper BONES Tutorial http://www.sarcophagi.blogspot.com/2015/03/reaper-bones-glowing-ghosts-using-led.html (http://www.sarcophagi.blogspot.com/2015/03/reaper-bones-glowing-ghosts-using-led.html). In the next few weeks I'll be back with some first installments of the campaign where we will be using the bulk of 2 combined terrain and fig collections... it should be pretty awesome!

I am just doing up a few Bones models for Strange Aeons at the moment as well. The translucent ones are actually very nice.

I think there were also a few possibly-relevant models in the old HorrorClix range; I will have a look at my boxes and see if I can find a relevant photo to post (although it would be hard to light the bases of those).
