Title: Jimbibbly's WotR and GoT thread *03.11.16 Tully household knights*
Post by: OSHIROmodels on January 26, 2013, 07:39:37 PM
And it will probably be very infrequent  lol

I got the Perrys infantry boxed set a while ago now but as reward for getting the Chinese commission done I painted one up that I had built before Christmas  ::)

Pale green and pale blue will be the retinue colours of Sir John Aspley of Guilford and one of his household is below  :)

I've gone for a darker armour on these to try and give the impression of blackened armour that's seem plenty of action, seems to have worked but probably not the best figure to try it on.

I've got a free picture editor on the pad and had a play, turned out better than the original so I'm happy for now.

Obviously they are never going to be as good as Richards (talented git) but they'll do for me  :D

cheers

James

Looking good. Quick question; how did you do the wood? I'm trying to get that effect with a light brown wash, wondering if your way was easier.

It's the leather brown triad from Foundry but then with a thin coat of Base Sand on top.

A cunning plan is hatched:
Let the other boys finish theirs first and they wont notice how slow you are because they have already moved on to something else.
Genius!

And a great start.
Lovely jobbie, Jibbly!

It's in the same state as most other stuff I've started for myself, in a state of in-completion  :D

Very nice, I have developed an addiction to this period; thankfully I only ever bought one single army - in 6mm scale! - so it's under control. Very nicely done, please post pics of these less infrequently  :D 8)

Very nice indeed. I would be quite chuffed to have a unit or four looking like that.

I've got boxes of the Perry's in my dining room for the store...so tempting... but just like a drug pusher or bar keeper it doesn't do to start dipping into your own stock! lol

Infrequent, yes. Progressing, yes. Mixing it up a bit, oh yes  :)

I'm jumping on the Game of Thrones band wagon but also keeping on with WotR at the same time as I feel plenty of figures can be crossed over between the two. General terrain should be fairly similar also.

So with the mods permission I'll use this thread to keep both projects going at one.

I took a fair few pictures earlier tonight but only three were worth keeping after playing with them in a photo editor  ::)

The first one is the standard bearer for Sir John Aspley of Guildford. Hand painted banner which is why it's simple  :D

Next up is the complete grouping so far. Eight whole figures complete! I'm almost ready to go to war  lol

Now here is the start of my House Karstark group, two of the figures in the previous group can be used for his one as they have been generically painted and I'll try to do this for the majority of foot sloggers and some f the cavalry.

Haven't got a name for the leader yet but I'm quite pleased with the conversion of him. The original figre is a Gripping Beast early dark age leader, his shield has been swapped and he's been given a new head with sculpted hair and a new sword arm. Even though it's an early dark age figure I think he fits quite well  :)

Got another eight or so assembled and primed so hopefully more progress soon.

cheers

James

Splendid progress with both periods. I particularly like your very effective Karstark leader and the simplicity of your sigil. I have been pondering how to do the sunburst as a simple livery badge or shield device - you've cracked it! I only hope my painted versions come out half so well...
Silent Invader - go for it... If you read all the books there's a wealth of material and detail to develop into a full blown period bash! I can thoroughly recommend Warlord Celts X Mantic zombies for White Walkers...

Well, a project isn't a project without some terrain  :)

I've made a small start on a fortified tower that could be used as a Peel tower for WotR (stretching it a little) or a small holdfast for GoT...

It's loosely based on Dalton Castle (the next town up from my home town) which I believe is the southernmost Peel tower in England, although I could be horribly wrong on that  ::)

The windows have been sketched on the rear of the walls to make it easier for cutting. This was done with a dremel and a drill bit and then joining the holes with a scalpel.

The walls were pre-mitred at work (this was a couple of months ago now) and stuck together with a roof plate providing a solid outline to stick to.

I've given most of the windows sills and heads, it's just the fancy one and the door that will need some attention now.

The wall tops will be capped and I'm debating on a small pitched roof  ???

I have also had an idea to make a proper master and make it commercially available, so it's been added to the list of things to produce  :)

cheers

James

Very nice work. Did I miss the bit about the stone texturing on the front of the walls? I realise we're looking at the back where the features are marked out...

And I think some Lancastrians might dispute that Dalton Castle is the most southerly pele. On the other hand, that would force them to admit they're southern, so they might keep quiet  ::)

Nah, I think I started it over Christmas and had no access.

The stone work is a cast Will sheet so there are some small bubbles in it which will probably become apparent when painted  ::)

Cheers Rodge  :)

I've dug this one out of the cupboard and finished the roof off and I'm going to use it for WotR, Got and Robin Hood but I've put it here as it seemed the best place at the time.

It was started 13 years ago whilst I was still at university  :o but now it's done  :D

All the bricks are cut from card, individually and stuck on, individually...

I used to do this all the time as it can be quite therapeutic but I can be a lazy shit sometimes and have started to use sheeting more and more often  ;D

Only one photo as the others didn't turn out so well, even with photo toaster (silly name). The new figures are the chap in the bronze armour who will be a relative of Sir John and there are a couple of new archers sporting the same livery as the rest.

The bronze looks better in person though  :?

Last update for a few weeks and I've got a fair number done now  :D

Firstly, three bods for Sir John of Guildford, horn blower and two bill although like most of the bill they can be used for other factions/settings etc.

Bit blurry but I am getting slowly better a taking and editing photos  :)

Now we have the whole of Sir John's retinue so far minus the swappable bill

And now we have a Karstark banner man with the Sunburst in all it's glory. I'm quite pleased with the turn out of the banner but not so much with the black armour, a little more practise at that one I think...

And then the Karstark hordes...

And finally all the figures so far  :)

That banner is very good. I myself would be more than happy if any black armour I painted looked that good, but for a perfectionist a sharper delineation of the black armour and gilding would be a consideration.

I think the bronze and the black armours look very good. You have created a question in my mind.

I am working on the Swiss Burgundy War of 1476.

I have seen a few manuscript pictures (Schiling) with golden armour but I do not know if this is artistic license or historically justified.

Is there any historical evidence for bronze or black or golden armour in this period?

Dear Max,

I have seen black armour and gilded armour in museums (e.g. Royal Armories in Leeds and the Alte Zeughaus in Solithurn).

However, as I recall, this was all from the Henry the 8th and Renaissance periods (i.e.  from about 1535 onwards).

I am interested to find out if the experts here know about earlier examples.

Regarding the bronze and black armour, it's made up I'm afraid and there has been no research behind it. I can get away with the black as its for 'fantasy' and I presumed that the bronze might of happened with some sort of glaze or laquer over the top of the real thing.

Would normal laquer suffice? I'm pretty sure some armour was painted so maybe this is an option. As to the durability, who can say  ???

Well, as its gone down so well I might try a few glazes of different hues to see what people think (when I get back from galavanting though  :D ).

Inspired by the good Captains thread I made a few more figures today  :)

They are household troops for the Karstarks. I'll be doing some normal WotR figures soon as I bought the merc box at the weekend  :D

Mainly using the parts from the standard bow and bill and mounted men at arms boxes with a couple of Gripping beast plastic Viking arms, some random shields and a GW cloak.

I need to put some green stuff fur around some of the figures necks etc. The cloak had to be carved out a bit at the back to allow it fit more snugly and it seems to fit rather well.

I quite like the random shield designs as it helps to break up the monotony.

Well, infrequent is the title  ::)

These were originally going to be my first round entry for the LPL but I didn't get enough figures done and with Salute very close I felt better not to enter than to have a halfhearted go at it.

Anyway, we have more household troops for House Karstark  :)

And with the original three household troops taking the grand total to eight  :o

I've started on some normal bill/spear infantry for the Karstarks and also some pike for House Tully, although the Tully troops can be used for WotR easily.

cheers

James

They are fucking lovely.  Very rough, earth colors but still enough contrast in them to make them stand out. That's not always easy to achieve.

You really did a great job making a variation on a theme with those shield designs to.

Many thanks for the replies chaps  :)

Did you sculpt the cloaks and hair etc?

The cloak is a GW one (Kinghts of the White Wolf if I remember) and the hair and furs are sculpted.

Here are the primed Karstark foot sloggers (really crap photo I'm afraid  :( ). Mainly Perrys but with some Dark age plastics thrown in to give them more of a rough and ready feel and also a mix in weapons. I stupidly forgot to add any beards, furs etc and so will do so on the next batch.

And here are the start of the Tully foot sloggers. Straight builds but going for a medium armour look. I did have a leader figure to go with them but he's disappeared  ???

I think so, yes. They have a much more rough and ready look. I've put some crossbow arms on a couple and they work well. Got to add Greenstuff fur cloaks etc, but they're looking good already. Very nice figures. Hopefully I'll have some pics of the builds in the next day or two :)

I am officially excited... Maybe I need a Winterfell. Which might double nicely as Sandal Castle for the battle of Wakefield...  ;)
But it'd have to be a brick by brick job, you understand...  8)

Little bit more done in the form of a Tully officer, I've got nine pike primed and started as well. The photo in't that good typically but I'm happy with the painting  :)

Even though these will be for GoT I am going to use them for WotR as well as the small fish sigil could be used in England (at a push).

Got some more builds done today, five Karstark bowmen but they still need greenstuff cloaks and wooly stuff and five Westerlands bannermen. No idea as to the house for these as Lannister seem a bit obvious but looking at some of the heraldry, the other will be a shit  lol

I think I'll be going for House Sarsfield, green and white with an arrow sigil, nice and easy  :) I'll also be painting some of the armour in house colours as a personal experiment, we'll see how it goes

Finished the Tully pike and these will stand on for WotR also. Need some banner men for them at some point.

As promised here's the mounted WotR character, Sir John Aspley himself  :)

No varnish as I'm really pleased with the sheen on the armour and I don't want to risk spoiling it, it might just mean a touch up on the feathers every now and then...

Infrequent is as infrequent does  ;)

I haven't painted or constructed any figures since the LPL and whilst having a small break from terrain making I thought it might be a good opportunity to re-visit this thread. Also taking to Richard at BLAM helped  ;)

So sat in front of the telly I made a new batch of figures primarily using the Perry Agincourt and first WotR set. Obviously they need a bit of cleaning up and the Karstarks need some green stuff furs/cloaks etc but you get the idea.

Karstarks first with two more foot sloggers and five more archers.

And now for some Freys, the style of these really seems to fit with what I imagine them to be like (with a little help from the TV series).

How easy did you find it to get the WOTR heads on the Agincourt bodies? I like the armour of the Agincourt blokes but would want to chuck sallets on them and can't work out if this is feasible or would just be painful to achieve and look rubbish.

It's a relatively easy process as the plastic is fairly soft and using liquid poly cement helps as you can reposition the parts for a while after placing them.

Richards thread linked below goes into it in more detail  :)

Painting!  :o  o_o  ;D  :D  ;)

I am slightly concerned that between us we're making rather a lot of goodies and nowhere near enough baddies, so it's a good job you're making Freys!

I'm up to 20 Starks, a dozen Lannisters, and a handful of odds and sods (Greyjoys, Boltons etc).
Think I will now add a proper contingent of Boltons, since they (like the Freys) will do for either side, given their treacherous track record  >:D
Plus a few more Lannisters... (Just need those plastic HYW French... )

An update!

But just a small one  :D

A mounted knight for the Karstarks, no one in particular and quite sombre in his garb.

I've also nearly finished the two men-at-arms and five archers (they were going to be for the LPL but I wisely decided not to enter) for the Karstarks as well but I need to do some more figures for Sir Johns retinue at some point in the near future...

Hopefully more soon but you never know  ;)

Tycho Brahe a danish nobleman and astronomer was famous for having a silver nose. As his real one was sliced of in a duel.

If I am allowed a bit of button counting. Then I am not really a fan af him having a poleaxe on horseback. That really is most useless while riding a horse especially when you are also carrying a shield.

I read about an interesting encounter with the Turkish governor of Rhodes and Sir Sydney Smith. The Governor's party trick was to tap his nose with a spoon at dinners to call attention. It was silver but painted flesh colour... lol

I didn't want to say, but a Bec de Corbin or saddleaxe would have been a better choice of weapon. You are more likely to lop an ear off or 'do a Mountain' on your own horse by accident with a pollaxe! :o

Ah but gentlemen. He may have just hopped onto his horse before or after a battle on foot.
I have done a couple of mounted men with poleaxes, because as we know - in the Wars of the Roses, at any rate - the practice was for armoured men-at-arms to ride to the battlefield, dismount, fight on foot, then remount to pursue the fleeing enemy. So it seems perfectly likely to me that one would have seen men in the saddle with poleaxes - unless every man had a batman to pass his weapons to when in the saddle?

Aha!

Salute is out of the way and it's time to play with toys  :D

The good Captain kindly got the new Renedra tower for me (more on which later in this post) and I have started to convert it into a 'holdfast' for GoT. Unfortunately it is too fantastical for an English castle of the time so I will have to think of something else for the WotR figures I've got.

There will be a wooden stair for the doorway and a wooden hoarded top.

Regarding the tower kit itself, I'm ever so slightly disappointed with it. They appear to have rushed these out for the Salute release as there is a lot of small flash where the moulds haven't sealed properly. Several of the bigger parts were wonky as if the plastic hadn't had time to fully set. There are no proper internal features on the lower portions and the ones for the upper are scant at best. Also, there are no lugs for the crenelations to join together at the corners.

Not massive problems and certainly fixable but annoying none-the less. I feel that if they didn't rush it for Salute then it would've been almost perfect.

I shall no doubt be getting more though along with the walls  lol

cheers

James

Hmmm. Got mine out of the box, had a good look, couldn't make head nor tail of it, then put it back in the box again  lol
Maybe I will ask you to build and titivate mine for me as well.  :D
I like the sound of a 'holdfast'. Much sexier than a mere common-or-garden tower.
And I like the idea of some timber stairs and structures around it too.... And possibly on top of it...  ::)

I can't deny I was tempted but decided the 'Gothic' look wasn't quite what I was after.

I've finished the base for the tower and have made a very brief start on the upper wood work. I've gone for the same style of rockage as Dorset because it's getting easier and it works.

The colour is slightly different as it will be a type of sandstone which should become apparent when painted.

Still got he wooden stair to do as well and I'll probably have a look at that tomorrow.

I think it certainly is but it does need more work than I first thought. It's also quite distinctive and not easy to disguise without a lot more work. MAybe that was part of Renedras intention  ???

I'm just inking it at the moment and then I'll be drybrushing it up to various sandstone tones.

All the stonework and groundwork is done but I'm still pondering what the best course of action for the top is. I don't want it to look too North European as that doesn't really seem the style for the North of Westeros. Some more thinking to do...

Why the hell would they leave them filled in? Sloppy tooling for such a pricy kit.... Anyway, it should be easy to dremel out.

Jim, do you know if renderas ruin kits are designed to fit with their caste bits? In that case they could together make for a good Moat Cailin or Harrenhall build.

I filled them in, just haven't painted them black yet  ;)

Did you build it with a single tower kit? I want to build a fortified church/manor house with the kit, and I am wondering how many windows sections you get. I may have to buy the 2 tower set. Okay, I may just go a little crazy and buy the big castle, just to have enough sprues...

Sorry Rui, it was a bit of a joke as I was making Spanish buildings and they had priority but that's a very decent offer. If ever I'm in Portugal I'll let you know  :)

I've seen it in the flesh plastic+blue foam and it is jolly nice, the colours in the pictures are a little washed out compared to the original which has a warmer tone to it.

Got some more Karstarks painted over the past few weeks and built some normal WotR figures that will join Sir John Aspley at some point this year.

Four archers, two men at arms and a standard bearer (who's in the big group).

You'd only be regretting it if you were building that in situ. What glue are you using for the balsa, and are you pinning it as the glue dries?

It's built 'off model' and I'm using thick superglue with a little activator. No need for pins.

I've done a little painting  :D

Six Tully household guard/knights, quite simple but hopefully effective nonetheless.

I've also made a 'Blackfish' figure to lead the Tullys (he doesn't have a tash in the books but I like the head).
