Hi!
I have been obsessing with robots of a few years now and have had a bash at sculpting my own and thought I would post a couple of shots of my progress:

Thunderchief
The setting is a planet wide junk pile called the Scrapyard and is populated with several tribes of obsolete robots. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in me getting them cast too!
All the best!
-
Wow, these are so cool! And in my favourite colour too... ;)
Sadly, I doubt I could get into more games (I'm drowning in them already!), but I do think it sounds like a really cool and original idea. I'd be very interested to see a cool little game based on these models. Maybe if it gets a bit more developed, it could be Kick Starter material (assuming you want to take the project quite a bit further, of course)?
-
They are fun in design and cool in execution -both modelling and painting. Pretty nice job! :)
-
They look wonderful, very characterful lot.
Do the different factions consist of different types of robots with similar attributes shared between different levels (like all boss robots are stats wise the same etc)?
-
Very cool, could be a very fun game...
-
Great robots, and a cool idea for a game. I could see that selling, actually, if you could market it... maybe with a few plastic robot body types and plug-in weapons and equipment. One body for your big heavy (can take super-sized gun-arms or combat weapons), one body for the little 'barrel' types which can take weapons or tools (can upgrade with long legs for faster movement or spider-legs for crossing obstacles), a 'head' upgrade for seing further and gaining command/comms functions...
Oh, and great robots! I know I said it before but I thought I'd re-emphasise the point.
-
CAST now I LOVE those!! Now once cast hopefully they will be VERY cheap! :o :-* :-* :-*
-
Neat!
-
Very nice indeed!
:-*
Red Orc's ideas for a modular system sounds like the way to go.
It would make it easier for you, casting-wise, and give the potential punter plenty of options.
Major_Gilbear's Kickstarter option sounds like a winner, just set your start-up level so you cannot end up getting stung and you will also have a solid base of customers in order to expand the range.
Research time, methinks!
;)
Good luck if you do decide to go ahead.
:D
-
Dug around a bit in your blog (which is wonderful BTW), and found this (http://rustyrobots.blogspot.co.uk/).
Looks like you have quite a lot developed already? :)
-
Realy nice project. I hope to see this grow.
And excelent paintjob. I really like the idea of robots battle it out for the scrap metals. :)
A side note but didnt Grind House Games (the people behind Incursion) start a project something like this but eather canceled it or sold it?
-
These are very cool and you definately need to get them cast, I would be happy to help you do them in metal but I think there might be better in trollforged resin/ plastic. He usually around on frothers
-
interesting style, very similar to Machinarium, do you know it?
anyway, i love the idea of building its own miniatures... and those are veery nice!
-
VERY cool robots and very nicely painted!
One reminds me on the mad robot icon (third from the left in the upper picture) from the ... dunno? was it ... "(new) battlestar galactica"-label? And another one, the "thunderthief" is clearly a very advanced Khadorian Warjack! :-*
Are the all and completely selfmade? The look gorgious!
best wishes and thanx for sharing!
DK
PS
mind some step-by-step pix? a blog? anything? just more pix!?
-
Fantastic looking robots!

Exactly what I was thinking when I saw the photos. Lovely game. Simple but good.

I hav been following your development of these for donkeys now - please please cast them! I want to give you money!

Hi!
Thanks for the comments folks!
At present I've develops concepts for six different tribes, each with their own look and fighting style.
The Reds, metal working types who rely heavily on fire and hammer based attacks.
The Blues, nautical swashbucklers with an obsession with the films of Errol Flynn.
The Yellows, inhabitants of the more toxic areas of the Scrapyard.
The Whites, a small tribe of somewhat inept but obsessive fans of flying and speed.
The Greens, Robots which have become overgrown with vegetation which has given them some strange ideas.
The Blacks, renegades and and outlaws of the Scrapyard.
Theres a bit more info on each of them over on my Rusty Robots blog here: http://rustyrobots.blogspot.co.uk/p/the-tribes-of-scrapyard.html (http://rustyrobots.blogspot.co.uk/p/the-tribes-of-scrapyard.html)
The general gist of the setting is that the robots inhabiting the Scrapyard are obsolete and were abandoned but have developed their own primitive civilisation and societies.
I have begun slow development of a ruleset but its a long way off at present and am more interested in fleshing out the setting and getting some figures into production!
Speaking of which, the first of the Crawlers and Renegades are almost complete and I will try and get a quick picture of them up today!
All the best!
-
Hopefully you get to launch the production soon, really fun stuff.
Although I had not planned to start new potential hobby projects, the robot minis so far have got me hooked. Will be great to follow your progress.
-
I liked all the faction ideas apart from the Greens, which seem a bit... half-hearted for some reason?
What about if instead of communing with nature and being infested with plants, the Greens are very low-tech and more steam-powered? The Greens could have colours and styles that are reminiscent of the old Victorian steam tractors for example but with lots and lots of rust, and use steam/water-based attacks. Fluff-wise, they could still live in the forested areas, but the relative lack of scrap in those areas has led them to adapt accordingly and include the use of materials like timber (either as structural elements or for fuel?).
-
These are really fantastic!
Do you have any WIP shots?
-
Hi!
Theres some work in progress pics over on my blog:
http://spacecowsmith.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/new-robotic-previews.html
I will also try and post some pics of the Black raider I am building at the moment!
As for the Greens, they are a bit of an oddity as the plants and trees which are growing on them have got into their innards so they are kind of like zombies...
As for a more steampunk faction, there is an Isambard Kingdom Brunelbot designed and ready to be built with some Victorian goodness too!
All the best!
-
Wonderful project you have going! The look of the robots and the idea of the world seems to meld a lot of great pieces from many games and media I enjoy. I'm always looking for gaming stuff I can do with my little daughter. The relative elegant simplicity of the sculpts would be easier to paint with young hands, yet serve as a wonderful canvas for more skilled hobbyists.
-
I think I would definatly buy some of these- they are lovely. I don't need loads, but they look fun to paint.
-
Just amazing. What wonderfull miniatures. Great background material and excellent drawings.
I'm very impressed. :)
-
Intriguing :)

Call-Me-Kenneth likes doing bad things!

Hi!
Thanks for the comments folks! I have been busily working away with sculpts and background for each of the factions and thus far have about half a dozen of the Black Tribe robots finished and ready for casting.
Heres a quick pic of some very rough concepts of the little villains:
At present I have sculpted them with the option of fists and guns but hope to add more arm options such as spears and more esoteric weaponry later.
The greens are also getting a complete re-write and more info and pics can be found over on my http://rustyrobots.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/and-so-it-begins.html (http://rustyrobots.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/and-so-it-begins.html)
All the best!
-
As ever very cool!
-
Missed the first time round :(
What a great little concept 8) 8)
The figures are cracking and would make a perfect pint and peanuts game :D
cheers
James
-
Your wee robots have soooooo much character!! Love your ideas for them!
-
It finally clicked what this reminded of; Gorkamorka! Well, the isolated tribes fighting over scrap, anyway (i.e. the cool bits, and not the other rubbish). lol
You'll be pleased to know however, that I think your concept is waaaaaaay cooler. And it definitely has strong Kickstarter potential too. 8)
-
You did a great job...some look like they are leaking oil or have been over lubricated. Nice colour choices. Thanks for sharing.
Regards,
Hitman

These are ace, you may just have sold me on a new game, I love the character you manage to squeeze into the little fellas.
Personally I'll be in with the blues, Captain Sprocket high on the oily seas.
I'll keep an interested eye on any future developments.

This thread actually made me go play Machinarium...and I forgot how frustrating that game can get!
PS: I really wish battle bots had taken a better direction and they kept showing it.
-
So enough teasing, are these being cast or not? ???
-
Hi!
I am hoping to be getting the little fellows cast up within the next couple of months. At present the Black tribe have got a good half dozen basic robots done and I am going to be moving onto the other tribes with the hope of getting some basic robots sorted for each tribe before moving onto the more advanced and larger models!
All the best!
-
preview pics!!! :-*
-
I almost wish I'd missed this thread as it will be very hard not to buy some of these!
I think what would be ideal for me would be to buy an assortment of hands, legs etc with which i can make my own tribe. Perhaps you could make it possible to buy the 'limbs' at some point?
-
Hi!
Handily the arms and bodies have all been sculpted individually and are interchangeable! I'm hoping to do some more unusual weapons too such as rocket hammers, spring mounted fists and so on too as well as lots more basic ones such as swords, hammers, pistols and assorted guns!
All the best!

Sounds cool! Will the list include the usual chainsaw, wrecking ball, pneumatic drill, blow torch etc as well? :)

I'm blown away by this concept (and I don't "do" sci-fi)! When you get it up and running, count me in!

Hi!
Glad to hear folks like the little fellows! The Black Tribe Bullies (slightly larger and spikier than the minions) will come armed with guns, chainsaws and brawling fists.
Each tribe will have access to lots of fun stuff! The blues have pirate themed weaponry including clockwork bombots, swivel guns and even the mighty Broadsides, a big guy with a chest full of cannon. The reds have lots of fire based weapons such as flame throwers, steam hammers and blowtorches. The yellows weaponry on the other hand is all based on toxic. Stuff they work with, be it isotope staffs, acid bombs or tox spreaders.
The greens are still in early stages but are of a more savage style with lots of primitive weaponry but also some organic ones! Likewise the whites are more high tech and have lots of stuff like plasma carbines and so on.
I am slowly working towards a game somewhat akin to a cross between Necromunda and song of blades where each robot can gain experience allowing to to improve its programming and weaponry but I suspect that's quite a ways off at present as I really want to get the assorted tribes basic robots released along with a leader and some sort of specialist to get the ball rolling so to speak!
All the best!
-
Great work on these Richard.Love how good your sculpting skills are getting.Always liked your painting style too.Looking forward to seeing these being produced.Good luck with the project, you deserve it.
-
it will be nice to see the conversions coming from some fellow LAFers here. :)
-
Consider me in!
Any idea on what they might cost or is it too early to tell? Regardless of price I shall be picking up some. Just a matter of how many :)
-
Hi!
I'm still trying to work out the cost of each figure but they will be cast in resin as they are too chunky for metal!
I suspect the basic robots which are going to be on average a 3 piece sculpt will average out about £3-£5 each and the bigger fellows anywhere from £15 up depending on size and complexity!
Hope that helps!
-
Sounds good. Gimme gimme! :D
-
Sounds very reasonable, I will happily buy a whole bunch!
-
I'd say stick it on Kickstarter so I can invest!
The background on your site is so much richer than some professional output I've read, I really want to read more!

Well, if they are available by August (my birthday), I will be dropping about 100 quid on them.
-
:-* Sounds really interesting! Nice minis!
Brilliant BG too!
-
What kind of scale are you planning on doing them in? (If the question has already been asked, please ignore this luddite)
-
Hi!
The basic robot stands 30mm tall with some of the specialists and big guys standing well over 100mm.
Handily they are the perfect size for heavy power armour suits in 15mm scale too though!
I will try and get some pics taken on my next day off work so folks can see progress thus far!
All the best!

I should never have looked at this thread! :o

Great looking concepts with so much character. Looking forward to the models becoming a reality.

Hi!
Heres some quick pics of the sculpts for the first robots:
Black Tribe Minions
(http://i1052.photobucket.com/albums/s449/spacecowsmith/DSCF1065_zps864be389.jpg)
Black Tribe Bullies
The Minons stand 30mm tall while the Bullies stand 40mm tall. Theres still some bits and bobs needing done, such as the Bullies need more arms sculpting and theres more rivets to be added to the Minions guns and arms but they are pretty much done now!
I still need to sculpt their leader model and will be moving onto the Reds next!
All the best!
-
Really wonderful stuff!
-
More than sweet! I offically envy you. :D
-
They are lovely. Such a nice simple concept superbly executed. The sculpts just ooze character.
I think a few of these will be making the painting table when they're available. :D
-
Want! Really, really want! :-*
-
Simple and yet so full of character, brilliant work so far. Some miniature companies should take note, this is how it should be done !
Count me in on this one ! 8)

Wicked robots!
-
They“re great, full of character!! I like them a lot :-*
-
These are so, so cool!
But please, a small favour; if the feet are big enough to stick/pin to a base securely, please don't add an integral base. They are a big PITA to remove, and I personally find it a real turn-off. If however some poses are on one foot, or have spindly contact points, then it's fine.
-
I'm just echoing everyone else's view, wonderful!! 8) 8) :-*
-
More echos from this direction as well! They are great, will definately get them :-*
-
They look really fun and great, nice project over here!
-
great stuff! :-*
+1 for non-integrated base, though.
-
Good GODS! I dooooo like them!!! :o :o :-* :-* :-*

Hi!
Just a quick update! Theres a load of concept art been added to my Rusty Robots blog showing the designs for the Red Tribe:

Hi!
I just noticed the comments about the solid base. As they are going to be resin casts, the integral base is kind of necessary but I shall do some experimenting when it comes to casting to see what I can do!
All the best!

heh, your drawing style is so lovely :)

An integral base isn't a prerequisite for resin casts so take another look at the likes of fenris games minis, (resin with tabs) and see that it can be done. Whatever you end up deciding, CAST EM! :D

Man these would go nice on the Scrap Yard boards that Secret Weapon is Kickstarting:

Hi!
Sorry about them being resin! Sadly they are so chunky that making them in metal would be far too expensive.
Hopefully I will have some sculpts sorted out in the coming weeks too!
All the best!
-
The robots are great! Looking forward to seeing the results.
-
Really looking forward to these.... any updates?
-
Hi!
Alas not I'm afraid. I started a new job in October and its taking just about all of my time these days.
I do have stuff sculpted but just don't have the time or pennies to get them cast and into production...
All the best!
-
well, if you will plan a simple kickstarter i'd be probably in! And not only me, i think =)
-
Indeed yes, also consider my support for a kickstarter-esque effort.
