Here's a few new Hinterland miniatures I painted up for a Pulp Alley VSF league. I think they turned out pretty good and I hope you all like them.

Pretty darn cool.
-
Very nicely done!
-
Well done paint jobs on those minis! :o
Is that a graboid? Did you make it?
-
Lovely painting.
Look forward to seeing the ladies in an adventure.
-
Me likey very much!
Do You happen to have some gallery of the family pulp forces somewhere on the net?
I know the blog and the game reports.
-
Very nice work, great photos too ;D
-
Lovely job!

:-*
Well done!
Super paint jobs and smashing photos to show them off!
-
Great paintjobs and pictures. Looks like things are about to get ugly for the sailor left behind on the launch. Thanks for posting! :D
-
Very nice!
-
Really nice work, sir! :-* I've got to get some of these one day.

We based it off of another miniature of a tremors worm. You can see the Workbench post at the link below.

You can also find the miniature we based it on by following this link.

There are a couple different places where you can find some leagues we or other people have made. You can check them out by browsing the links below. Sorry that some of them don't have pictures.

Last time I checked I wasn't a sir, but a lady. It's nice that I can pull off the status of both. lol lol
Thanks for all the kind comments. Dad also ordered some trench fighters from Hinterland so those will be our next up and coming project. :D

We've been testing the new Gangs rules quite a bit lately, and decided to push the limit to see what would happen. So for this battle I played my new Venus VSF League, against a horde of native Newts…
Captain Cadence League (10 slots) = 1 Leader (with Commander), 1 Sidekick, 5 Allies, and 1 Follower.
Newt Warband (10 slots) = 1 Sidekick, and 40 Newts (divided into 8 Gangs) -- with Mastermind and Short Range.
Turn #1 -- This was not set up as a fair fight. Although the Newts clearly outnumbered Cadence’s landing party, they had to deploy in the open and out of range for their bows/javelins. In addition, Cadence was in control of the Initiative --
(http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o665/pulpalley/AAR/04-2013%20First%20Action/100_4139_zps36325a5d.jpg)
On turn one Cadence’s Cadets opened fire immediately and inflicted significant casualties as the Newts raced forward to get into range. Once in range, the Newts were finally able to inflict some damage of their own. Dad held back his Newt Sidekick until the last moment, and was able to injure Sgt. Sidney with a poison tipped arrow – to steal the Initiative.
At the end of Turn #1, over half of his Newts lay scattered across the landscape, and two Cadets were out of action…
(http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o665/pulpalley/AAR/04-2013%20First%20Action/100_4145_zps4901a751.jpg)
Turn #2 -- At the start of Turn #2 the Newts were now in range to close the gap -- and they had control of the Initiative...
In the center, Dad tried to finish off Sgt Sidney but she stood her ground admirably! The Newts did drop one more Cadet, but Cpt Cadence rushed to fill the gap and swifly lopped off the heads of the offending Newts.
On the Newt’s right, he tried to work a gang of Newts around Cadence’s line but they were cut down as well…
So here’s how turn #2 ended… over a dozen Newt casualties to one Cadet.
Turn #3 -- Was just about mopping up…
(http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o665/pulpalley/AAR/04-2013%20First%20Action/100_4154_zpscff23b2d.jpg)

This played out very nicely. Cadence used her superior position, superior arms, and superior training to handily defeat a far more numerous foe. Now I'm anxious to pit these two force against each other in a full scenario -- and get my sailors into some even bigger battles! :D
I'm going to figure out a way to get a Pom Pom onto Venus. Even if I have to have Hinterland Miniatures send me one themselves. lol

Cracking little report :-* :-*
cheers

Great stuff!
Inspired theoretical rambling: Now, I have no ideas if your rules have a campaign mode but in a campaign setting, wouldn't those Cadet casualties be hard to replace? Then a Smashing tactical victory could become a strategic loss if early in the campaign?
I love when games require people to treat their soldiers as valuable assets (spend as necessary if needed) instead, as often happens in a stand alone game, of assets to be squandered for a game win.
Looks like it was a "likely but not guaranteed" win/test scenario. Well played. As always.
Gracias,
Glenn
-
Yes indeed, Glenn. We don't have all the campaign rules worked out for our Venus 1881 setting, but it will generally be more difficult for the Earth forces to replace their casualties.
This was a worst-case scenario for the Newts, but I was fairly happy with how my little lizards performed. I'm looking forward to a rematch!
However, rushing across an open field at a prepared position filled with a motivated and well armed foe may not be the best tactic. Brilliant! lol
THANKS
-
Excellent photos and models! :-* Good game report, too.
A campaign setting always adds spice to the situations the various forces find themselves in. My Colonial campaign has me treating my little lead fellows very carefully at times. ;)

Hey everyone! Thanks for all the kind replies. Here's a couple more miniatures I've painted up for our Venus 1881 scenarios. :D
Doctor Nagel – Has cataloged thousands of new species on Venus, “True understanding is directly proportional to ones willingness to wield a scalpel.”
Shamus McCorkadale – The Chief Exchange Officer for the Cytherium Gas Guild.
Patches Hennessey – Known far and wide for his wild tales, Patches is a legend among the other Cytherium miners.

I'm ALWAYS impressed with the work you do!
-
Please keep Doctor Nagel away from my Hinterland girls. :)

Here's some beautiful Hinterland miniatures Dad painted up recently. They'll be another league for our Venus 1881 Pulp Alley campaign setting.

I'm looking forward to seeing this project progress.

Dad's done a really great job on those trenchers. Thanks for showing them off so effectively.

Thanks, Jason. I had a lot of fun painting these gals. I'd like to get a few of the mounted lancers if I can track down a suitably weird mount for them.

the Tamiya velociraptors make wonderful mounts
Cool, thanks for the tip. :) I'll let Dad know. I was just looking at them and they look really great.
Do you know about how tall they are compared to the Hinterland miniatures?
-
taller than a horse, but much more slender. I don't have the Hinterland girls to compare, but they can't be as bulky as plastic catachans
else try the new dark Ekf mounts from GW, they are a bit sturdier and are really cool sculpts, though a bit more expensive, but then less harness to do

Serious kewl, but still say the rider should be athwart the pelvis.
Physics is a cruel mistress...

-
Thank you former user. That really helps us a lot. We won't be getting the GW mounts but Dad ordered a pack of the raptors already. :D
-
You're welcome
You will find that hind legs and "arms" are intercheangable, which allows You to make a gazillion variants. I made a table for the hind legs/body combinations if You'd like to use it, cause I have bought 4 boxes and didn't want to repeat myself. There is also a vignette box with 2 raptors and a triceratops, the two are special variations. And there are two spare hind legs per box, that one can use as whole hams ;). Best plastic animal I've ever seen sculpted, even the very old small range.
-

Sounds like a how-to monograph worthy of its own thread! ;)
I know I'd like to see same.

Awesome, former user! I ordered the velociraptors and mesozoic creatures, so I need to get some of those lovely Hinterland Lancers next. :-*
I'm thinking they're going to look great together. THANKS for the tips.
...already wishing I had ordered more raptors!!!! lol lol lol

Doctor Nagel and his Venus experimentations. Just some new stuff I painted up recently.

looks like You are heading straight into a lot of work ;)
but I think it is well worth it. Are the riding ladies attached to the saddle? I guess so, this will spare You a lot of trouble.
if You are heading into dino-land, there are a lot more ideas to share.
Unfortunately I'm stuck in "development hell" with this project for I still don't have a concept for all those Lizardmen and Dinos and how their PJ shall look.
I also found out that the GW mounted saurus go very well with Kroot arms, in case You might think of indigen adversaries a bit further developed than "savages with bows" ;)
Anyway, I am full of admiration for Your home projects and have been watching right from the very start when You painted the houses ;-)

I remember the Kroot models from about 10+ years ago, and I think they'd probably fit right in with our Venus 1881 setting. I might be able to find some old ones at a decent price.
Thanks for the kind words and your help. So many of our projects are inspired by what we see from fellow LAF'ers.
Here are a couple pics of some golden oldies that Mila dug out of the dark depths of the closet recently. She touched up my old paint jobs, re-based them, and now they're ready for action again. ---

How strange names.

@ commissarmoody -- thanks, I'm looking forward to getting her into a game soon. She's definitely one of my favorite Hinterland figures. :-*
@ dolmat -- I wanted to name the two she-wolves Big Eyes and Big Ears in Finnish. i'm not really sure how close I got, so any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated. :D
We just received a couple boxes of Tamiya dinosaurs and they look great. I'm really looking forward to seeing how well the Hinterland Lancers fit on them.

Exactly what I was thinking as well. We don't have any 'Parrottmen' just yet, but I've started looking around. lol lol

I can provide Kroot heads en masse.
Some years ago someone here on LAF had a very interesting parrotmen concept with perry zouaves

You mean these guys?

Yes, exactly

all this talking of parrotmen and reptiles reminds me of one of my favourite topics

they are cool....slightly disturbing...but undoubtedly cool 8)
Indeed! I was cracking up laughing! Love those conversions. :-* lol

I painted up some new plot points and our Venus "Ceelosaurs" recently.

I don't know why but those "ceelosaurs" really appeal to me. Nice job on all.

I am planning to add a blanket and saddle, but I’m quite happy with how well they fit together with no work at all.
THANKS
-
Ooh, those look pretty cool. Froggy has provided some great mounts over the years, but those raptors really work, especially with the gasmasked lancers.
-
Very nice. They're the same mounts I have for my Venus cav :)
-
They work a treat 8)
cheers

AND, somebody's been listening when I whine 'perched on their haunches!' :o
Okay, I know they just 'fit' there, but it's great that something so lovely actually makes sense. :-*
VERY well done!

Now that's a great match-up! :-*

TaDa!
like it how they fit
I like it when a plan comes together
-
Looks great. What kind of bit and bridle will you give them?
-
You and Wolf Girl have done a lot of really cool stuff here Dave!
:-*
-
What kind of bit and bridle will you give them?
I'm sure you will do what you want... and for me, not even necessary.
A bit and bridle, though is fairly easy to make. I take sewing pins, cut them and glue them in the mouth. I then make little squares out of mulliput and attach them to the ends of the pin. That's the bit. I use normal paper for the reins, bending strips into a "V" shape. The bend is glued to the top of the hand and the ends are glued to the bit. I take another small piece of paper and bend it into a "7" shape and glue it on the bottom of the hand. You can see the construction fairly well here:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=10115
Just a idea...
-
Very nice! My lancers are sitting in limbo till I can be bothered to make them saddles for their basilisks.
-
bit?
I dn't know how realistic You want it, but a bit works only for horses denture an is not even necessary for riding.
a simple bridle like a sling around the snout should suffice.
Oh, and I would appreciate if You shared any good idea for the saddle, since I am not happy with mine
-
Dad finally put together my Pom-Pom. He's been working really hard on the Perilous Island campaign book. Really I think he was just scared of giving me control of the Pom-Pom.

Vickers-Maxim pom-pom - fired a 1 pound shell. Designed for mounting on warships to deter fast torpedo boats (similar intention to the Hotchkiss revolver cannons, but far better design concept).

Thanks for the explanation. I fear my orcs would cry if I took their wargs away from them.:) They do look nice with the lancers on their backs though.

These are the newest bases I've painted up. They'll probably be used in both our regular Pulp Alley setting and Venus 1881.

Here's the newest miniature I painted up for our Pulp Alley games. We'll use him to represent the leader of the Arbis. I designed him as a Terror so he is a one-man league. The miniature is sculpted by Tin Man Miniatures by the name of Wormwood, Evil Treeman.

GREAT FUN!
-
It looked like great fun. Could the terror masquerade as a tree when it's amongst other trees? That might give it some sort of ranged defense.
-
Looks like a great game! To bad ever one ganged up on the poor Arbis lol
-
That Arbis Terror is a wonderful beastie and has been finkished to a great level.
:-*
Now please stop showing those Sailor Lasses, as I am trying really hard to resist them at the moment and seeing them painted like that really does not help.
;)
-
Nice looking game.
:-*
Looks like a lot of fun.
Its good to see youngsters interested in the hobby too!

I would add my voice to this, but I've all ready succumbed. Those sailor girls will feature in my London Zombie incident as the "Women's Auxiliary Yachting Club". Don't give in old man. Stay strong.

Suffering from strange hallucinations, Patches shoots a cadet that comes too close to his hiding place. And Mielikki’s other companion leaps to protect the injured cadet…

Ugh, I always hate seeing beautifully painted miniatures lying on their sides, but I'm especially chagrined when they are Hinterland miniatures. :( ;)

If I remember correctly, you guys where looking for insect warriors. I've finally remembered where I've seen them. You can find them herehttp://cart.blackorc.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=68 (http://cart.blackorc.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=68)
I hope this helps.

Really nice thread going here.

Thanks! Those look really awesome we might have to buy some. Sadly, I didn't have enough ability slots to give it anything ranged. I might have to edit the sheet again. lol
This game was really fun especially since it was Kat and Makayla's first game, not only of Pulp Alley but of miniature gaming in general. We'll have to start inviting them over more often. :D
-
I'm glad to help. When your dad mentioned insect warriors I had an image of those guys in my head, but it took me weeks to figure out where I had seen them. The one with the bow does look really cool.
I can see you are building a great gaming group. ;)

As requested, here's a better picture of Captain Cadence's Cadets. They'll have an official league roster by later today or tomorrow.

Fantastic stuff!

Lovely paint on some characterful minis.

Don't worry, Jason. No models were harmed during the making of this AAR. lol
THANKS

Finally here, the Captain Cadence roster! I tried to make it a fairly balanced league between shooting and brawling. The sailors of Venus are highly trained to take on great trials and endure the harshest environments.

No wonder she keeps beating me! lol lol

Really! I'd never seen those, and the sorrier for it!

Not a comfort to a worried parent, and we ALL visualize the figure falling... *shudder*

Wait, you find that surprising? The only reason my daughter wouldn't thrash me at miniatures was she'd rather go LARP.
Now, my grandson will trounce me, fair and square. Like that will be a good thing...

Sorry about that guys! The Shoot skill is meant to only be 3d10. Just a casualty of copy and paste. lol
I've painted up some new terrain and plot points recently. You can never have enough boxes and luggage. :D

Wow!
Lady going out of town for a few days, eh?
;)
Nice work!
:-*
That reminds me that I must get around to painting my own luggage..... ::)
-
Lovely! I like the floral details on the hat boxes and trunks!
-
grand! :-*
so the greenish ones are what and can be bought where? ;)

Where is the case for the "industrial-strength hair-dryer" in the back? You DO know she "can't live without it!" lol
Doug

The three in the middle are part of Spartan's objectives for Legions. I think there were 8 of them in the set, and those are the last 3 she had to paint.

Yes, indeed. I do believe the two larger pieces in the back are a steam powered hair dryer (right) and curling irons (left). lol lol

Sadly, Mila left for a week long trip to the Colorado mountains today. :'(
And that picture accurately reflects her baggage train. I just hope they can hire some extra bearers!! ;D
THANKS!

THX for painting me in that direction. Wow, they have marvellous stuff, but a complicated webpage...
Or I am too stupid. In fact, I couldn't find the items...

It looks like the set is called -- Dystopian Legions - Empire of the Blazing Sun: Battlefield Objectives (9)
However, I'm pretty sure there are only 8 bases in the set. At least mine only came with 8 and I have only ever seen 8 in any of the pictures.
I'm glad we found some at a discount. They have crisp detail and are a bit larger than I expected (2" diameter).
HAVE FUN
-
the SF scenery stuff is really mindblazing.....
ah, found it

Love the luggage, nice clean details, where might one obtain the rather mundane luggage at? ;)

Glad you found them. I'm not a fan of picture-frame bases so I roughed the edges a bit before Mila painted them.

The luggage was made by 6milPhil here on LAF. You might PM him if you'd like to get some. They make great plot point markers for our Pulp Alley games. :D

I am glad that you pointed that out.
I did not realise that they were cast onto those bases.
i will give them a swerve then, as I hate those bases too, and cant be bothered going to those lengths.
Yours do look nice, though, I just think that I will stick with Phil's stuff coz its loverley and does not have moody bases affixed!
:D

Terribly sorry, ol' bean; I thought they were part of the same device. Obviously, the transportable model... ;)
Wish MY daughter were watching this:
a) She LOVES Spaceballs; we occasionally quote passages. Never about the size of one's schwartz, mind you.
b) She misses living in CO. I can be cruel, no? :D
Assuming I can find a proper discount, I think I WON'T be swerving, on those objective markers, mind you.

me neither....
darn, what a stupid idea....

well, maybe they'll downscale their dollies to 95%....

I've been on vacation in Colorado so sorry for the lack of updating. I finally finished up my pompom and the sailor crew. I'll have to work them into my league roster. :D

That looks very menacing. Great job painting it.
-
Odd bit of snow there. Quite a regular shape. Can't be natural. lol
On the other hand, the pompom and crew look great. :-*

You've done a wonderful job on Cadence and crew, this thread is lots of fun to look at. :)
Cheers!

That's because it's not snow, it's ash. lol
Here some new dinos that I painted up a bit ago. They are all made by Tamiya and dad took the pictures.

The good Captain lives too well to have that much mud stuck to his boots! lol
Square ash pit? That neat? I think not! lol lol lol

Is that croc dining on pig without the blanket? I didn't know Tamiya made dinosaur models are the a set or individual kits?
-
Is that croc dining on pig without the blanket? I didn't know Tamiya made dinosaur models are the a set or individual kits?
They all came in one set called Mesozoic Creatures.
-
Thanks for the info.
-
they have sets, vignettes and the old single models. the vignettes come with a scenic base and a 1/35 scale human "explorer", some have very nice details. the old single models are based on older reconstructions, so there might be differences to the newer ones.
But this doesn't matter if you don't care about authenticity. lol
it also means that theoretically, they are too big for 28mm, but again, who cares if you can seat a rider on a a velociraptor ;)
Edit: maybe I should have pointed out better that this was meant as a humorous careless note and as info and not as nitpicking. Please have your paleontological discussion somewhere else
-

I think Wolf Girl and dad have another thread about these, but -fu is not with me at the mo...

I always enjoyed, shortly after the movie came out, critics saying the v-raptors were unnaturally big, and how Spielberg was a careless hack (your own call, of course) when, lo, someone discovered a super raptor that fit the size perfectly. ;)
'That's too big!' 'We're waiting for paleontological confirmation, from somebody, sometime...' lol

Mila had lots of fun painting these dinos. I think they're some of her favorites now. :D
I think we'll have to oder more of the Tamiya 1/35 dino kits soon.
THANKS

Bobby Singer, one of the Cytherium miners, believed that camels would do best in the Venus landscape and brought a half dozen with him. These are his two favorites, Sam and Dean.

no, those two sleep at night ;)

I'm hoping she'll paint the two ladies that came with the camels, but it's always a surprise to see what she comes up with next. lol

Yes Sam and Dean need riders.

Speaking of dinosaurs ther eis a new kickstarter about Dino armies - not recommending it, just mentioning it - http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1125857856/dino-warz-tabletop-wargame?ref=live that may interest some looking for all things dino.
Not too sure it is VSF adaptable.
Gracias,
Glenn

I saw that KS project. If I knew that all the goofity weapons and armor junk was separate, I might consider it. I need more dinosaurs!

the dinosaurs are really good, but the weapons..... meh!
