These are the first 20mm I've done, I was initially on the hunt for 28mm Rhodesians, but these were just too nice not to have a go.
I much prefer the 'later war' look to these blokes, jump overalls and fireforce vests etc; plus the added bonus that when I went looking for Alouette IIIs, the 1/72 scale kits were a lot easier to find and considerably cheaper than their 1/48 scale counterparts.
All the Soldiers are from Under Fire Miniatures, the helos are Heller, the pilots are Elhiem Figures (http://www.elhiemfigures.com/prod_desc_FP08.html?sno=298), I also found a couple of nice door gunners but cannot remember where they came from.
I picked up the Selous Scouts packs and a couple of packs each of the RLI minis. After a little reorg and a few head swaps on some that I had doubles of, I made up a load of four man sticks. For the RLI each has a stick leader with FN and a radio, an MAG gunner plus two with FN (one stick has a gunner with an RPK).

I had a few spare RLI and the other Scouts, which I decided to paint up in Rhodesian camo to use as RhSAS,
they look the part with Soviet weapons and one group has all the back packs.

Very nice - still a lot of character on those infantry and I suspect it's easier to keep those birds aloft.
-
that's some really impressive painting 8)
-
Cheers, I really like this range, if they made them all in 28mm as well I'd buy them all again!
I have the RAR stick waiting for paint and the ZANLA guerillas, first
packs have been finished:

Great figures and I like the painting.
-
Very nice- a consistently high standard throughout all the figs. :)
-
Very nice. Where did you get the 20mm gun and gunner?
-
The gunner is a pilot figure, came from the same set as the techs on the G-cars. I can't remember where I got them from, so if anyone recognises them I would like to know myself!
The 20mm was scratch built from Evergreen plastic rod, plasticard, a bit of brass tube and a paperclip - dont look too close.
Here's one of the WIP pics, gives a better view:

The gunner looks like SHQ Vietnam helo crew, I have some.
Lovely thread

Looks good to me. I have four Heller Alouettes to assemble and will use them for Portuguese Air Force. One will be a "Bad Wolf" 20mm heli-cannon for aerial support. I'll use Elhiem crews but have been looking for a 20mm for some time.
-
I think the Elhiem (http://www.elhiemfigures.com/prod_desc_FP08.html?sno=298) pilots are great for a project like this, as they are fairly uncluttered with life jackets, OTT helmets etc.
-
Outstanding work! I was all set to order some Liberation figures until I saw this thread, now you force me to take the more expensive option!
-
Thanks a lot.
Personally, I think these guys are excellent. I wish Under Fire did helo crews for the Alouette III, as for the most part, detail wise just about everything else didn't really compare.
I've just ordered some more little blokes for another couple of ongoing projects; 1) a little Executive outcomes force [on the hunt for a good BMP-2] and 2) a Daniel Carney'esque 'Wild Geese' force.
That should keep me out of trouble for a bit . . .
-
Thanks a lot.

Hear hear! For the time being, I'd settle for a pack of Grey's Scouts and maybe some Paratroopers, but vehicle crews would be great.
Regarding your topic, I wish I had seen them earlier - when I assembled my Alouettes, I considered the construction too flimsy to work with a reduced canopy, so fit them enclosed and painted in the glass. The extra detail of the crew and guns really sets them apart.
-
Here are some photos of Portuguese armed helis in Africa and more recent photos of a 20mm.
-
Great pictures. Look at the size of the ammo cans on the second pic, looks about half a ton!
The last picture is just what I've been looking for; got to be the same weapon in the picture I have, just taken from the other side - thanks a lot for posting those.

Funnily enough, I've got Para troopers on my to do list, should be a fairly straight forward conversion (head swap).
I know what you mean about flimsy, I don't know if it's the age of the kits or what, but these things break just by looking at them too hard. Every wheel has been pined back on aswell as all the rotor blades. The blades have all had some thin steel rod attached and after my daughters cat vandalised the fleet I ended up magnatising the all the rotor assemblies.
After chopping the doors off I added the upright support post back on the gunner's side.

Are paratroopers a problem for some reason?
I know troops on Fire Force wore British Para helmets/motorcycle helmets for the jumps, but they ditched them with the chutes on landing.
:?

I guess you're right - for me it would be more of an aesthetic/practical convention in order to identify para sticks at first glance. Chutes should be off, in any case.
-
I was thinking para stick ID as well, although I have a 1/72 Dakota (hiding somewhere, not quite sure how a box that size can hide, will find it one day) and may do a scenic base for it with some troops lined up next to it . . .
My main motivation is that I'm using the heads from an RLI pack to convert some modern Russians for my little EO group, and wanted something to stick back on the RLI bodies, so Para helmets seamed a good alternative, the headless WW2 paras, who are donating their heads, will then get some heads with berets that I have found, as a separate item.
Whilst looking for new ideas I was inspired by this pic of a BTR-152, knocked out by 2Cdo RLI troops in Mozamique:
I found a 1/72 BTR-152 kit on eBay and made this:

What manufacturer will you be using for the WW2 paras? I've been looking on and off for a range that will somehow match the UF minis in bulk (and preferably also in style).

Great work! Your figures and helos all look excellent.
Just a note: the ammo feed on the Rhodesian K-car 20mm cannons was from the opposite side than that of the Portuguese cannons.
This one is South African but shows the feed:

@ Westfalia Chris: I just ordered some from CP Models (http://www.cpmodelsminiatures.co.uk/index.htm) not tried anything from there before so fingers crosses that they fit!
@ Super Mosca: Thanks very much. Also thanks for the info on the different ammo feeds.

I say! From the pics, they look like they would match quite well! I had CP stowed away in the 28mm Scifi/Fantasy link folder, so never thought to look there. Thanks!
I had my eye on SHQ figures, as I used to own a couple of their WW2 Germans, but the site seems to be devoid of pics at the moment.

They probably will, I'm sure they were part of the same company a while back... If my memory is correct that is, in which case Tony Boustead is likely to have sculpted both sets.
-

That would explain it. The overall style in the (inked casting) photos is remarkably similar.
-
Thanks for the order Ash
Just to confirm that TQD Castings should be a good match for Under Fire Miniatures as they were both sculpted by Tony Boustead
Empress Miniatures 20mm should also fit nicely as these were also sculpted by Tony
Hope this helps
Mark
-
What a busy chap!
I just Googled the talented Mr Bousted and he also did the rather gorgeously well sculpted 28mm Modern Brits from Empress. I've picked up a few from Salute, just to try painting the new camo pattern.
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=53182.0
@ Arlequin & Mark: Cheers for the info.
I thought there was something familiar about some of the CP Polish Paras without helmets, give them FNs and they would fit right in with the RLI models.
Mark, I'm really looking forward to getting stuck into the new figures; I'll post some pictures once I start chucking paint at things!
-
I would like to see more Bush and Border Wars stuff from Under Fire Miniatures.

This.
I would happily invest in 20mm for a number of settings, this included, if the figures matched the quality of the models... which those do.
-
Finished the third ZANLA pack from Under Fire; just tweeked a couple of them, one lengthened his shirt & another changed his shirt into a camo smock and added a couple of ammo pouches, for no reason other than it made them look more like the reference pictures:

Lots of character - I like them a lot.
-
Simply fantastic and great to see Bush war come to life.
-
Cheers chaps.
Waiting in anticipation for reinforcements to arrive . . .

After chopping the heads off some RLI minis for another project, I got hold of some suitable replacements and converted the bits to represent a couple of late war RhSAS.

I love this topic(and my interests normally stop at 1939), your work is brilliant and highly detailed.
-
Your painting is remarkable sir - the level of natural looking detail you have achieved in 20mm is truly realistic a real tribute to the Rhodesian conflict.
-
Thanks guys, I can only praise the models. The level of detail makes you feel like you're painting something bigger, just need a smaller brush & less paint!
I did have a go at doing a stick of troopies in 1/35 scale a few years ago. Couldn't find the right webbing and the rifles are a bit small, but was a good test for trying the camo:

Outstanding work. What models did you use as a basis?
-
The 1/35 scale blokes were based on the Dragon 'Nam series' US Navy Seals II # 3316.
-
Had a go at converting some Paras, used the 'U.S. AIRBORNE INFANTRY BOARDING AIRCRAFT' from TQD castings @ CP Models (http://www.cpmodelsminiatures.co.uk/index.htm). Chopped off their weapons and replaced them with some rather oversized SLRs from MJfigures, they are about 20% bigger than the rifles on the previous models. Even after chopping bits off to shorten them they still look huge. I filed down the helmets to look more like the British ones and chopped off the boot knives, entrenching tools etc. Just a bit of fun.

-
Decided to have a go at some huts, this is where I'm at so far:
-
man they look good :D
-
Dude, those look awesome! What did you use for the hut walls?
-
I'd been wanting to have a go at some huts for ages and once I'd found some suitable bits they were fairly straight forward. The bases are just that foam core board; the walls & fences are made from sticks ( Beech seems to work well, as nice straight lengths, it's also thin enough to look scaled to the little blokes). Cut little holes in the board with knife tip, push in stick with a bit of PVA; once dry I put some masking tape around the inside to stop them moving and added some filler to the outside (don't forget to leave a gap for the door!).
The roof, a little framework of sticks and PVA, then chopped the bristles from and old paint brush (I think the MK 2 huts will have more layers of bristles). Attack with paint . . .
-
Very impressive! :)
Maybe the roofs should be thicker, but to be honest they work for me as they are.
-
Very nice - the colours and textures are very pleasing.
-
I picked up a couple of armoured cars to add into the mix. A Ferret MK2/3 from bw models (http://"http://www.bwmodels.co.uk/index.asp") and an AML-60 from ACE:

-
MORE! :D
I love this thread! Thanks for sharing Ash!
-
Great work. This is a period which has caught my interest of late. But so far I have resisted buying anything. I don't think I could give the figures the justice you have in 20mm.
-
Thanks for the comments, @ Goosegog just go for it mate, pick up some troops ( I'd recommend the Under Fire range all day long) check out some of reference pictures ( I can send you links to a couple of good sites) and paint some tests. I just make it up as I go along, so long as I'm in the mood for painting . . .
Finally got around to painting the paras. Made a bit of a mess with a couple of the rifles, ended up buying some more from a company called BM, but they were as too small as the others where too big. Ended up chopping them up, then mixing bits from both.
A weapons pack from Underfire would be top of my list (hint, hint) FNs & MAG, AK47 & RPD . . .

Wow mate! :-*
-
Nicely done! :D
-
Cheers chaps.
Well that's me now totally out of 20mm things to paint . . .
-
Your work is awesome,I am glad to see how well the "UnderFire",miniatures paintup, and the para conversions are great.I love the helo's,I found some diecast in poland for a good price .I lost my love for building models I had when i was younger. Also I would like to ask if I could post a few of your pictures on my http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/ModernAfricanBushwars it's a group I run dedicated to post WW2 warfare in Africa, all albums are available for downloading by members, info sharing encouraged. It would be a honour to post some pictures,my favorite area is Rhodesia, with due credit given of course to you and this site. Sincerely Juergen C. Olk,keep up the good work.
-
Cheers juergen, I sent you a PM.

Hello Ash,
Are the links broken? I can't see your stuff on the page. I can see other peoples images in response to you. I am able to go to photo bucket and see them there. Nice stuff.
Cheers
Kevin

I must have posted to many pics and maxed out the freebie bandwidth on my Photobucket, either that or something has hotlinked to it, it should reset next week.
-
:'( :'(
-
Thanks Ash, I just got my Helo's from Eureka in USA. G car and K car, and they aren't bad little kits. I've got some RLI primed up and ready to go to work on those first, but have to finish up some Saga stuff first. So many things I want to do, and so little time:(
-
Just got this rather nice resin 'Crocodile' MPV from S&S Models (http://sandsmodelsshop.com/product/rhodesian-crocodile-apc/)
-
I have mine built ,been on the back burner to paint. They will be replacing my Hot wheels Humvee I converted to croccodiles..Although the conversion to a hippo worked out fine. I had built them before S.and S. had them. I also made a mortar truck. Can't wait to see your great paint job.
-
Brilliant thread, enjoyed seeing the underfire miniatures painted up.
-
Got some new bits from Under Fire Miniatures, very happy with these... plus some village bods from Elhiem,to go with the huts I made.
Just waiting for a few more troops to turn up and I'll break out the brushes.

Urgh. I want to see what you're up to, but photobucket is doing it's thing again I see… >:(
I shall return…
lol
-
Apologies, that account will reset on 19th. I don't know why it keeps max'ing out so fast. I'm assuming something somewhere is hotlinked to it, but as Photobucket no longer provide usage stats I can't tell...
-
They're showing up in the previous posts now. Some very nice additions there - it's all looking very good. I look forward to seeing some paint on these bad boys.
The marksman lying prone next to the termite mound is cool! :D
-
I'm not sure if someone asked already, but what is your technique for the skin? It's just fantastic! The minis are really beautiful, and at 20mm no less!
-
@ Too Bo Coo: Here's the colours I tend to use.
African skin; base colour, vallejo cam.black brown, highlighted with Highlight Germ. (Black), finally a thin wash of black.
European skin; base colour, Vallejo flat flesh, a wash of thin brown, highlight with more flat flesh & light flesh.
WIP: Six sticks of RAR; stick leader with radio & FN, MAG gunner plus two blokes with FN:
WIP: Back four blokes will be a four man tracker team all with FN, one with radio.
Front row L-R, four man PATU stick, chap with RPG to add to the SAS group, then three stick leaders to add to the RLI Fireforce.

Great looking stuff, reminds me to finish my crocodiles, great colors.

Hi Ash,
I have always been intrigued by the Rhodesian (and South African)
Mine Proof Vehicles like the Meerkat, Buffel, and the Leopard.......
do you think they'll go over good if I do them?
Ken
-
I'd like to get hold of a 1/72 Buffel or two. Has anyone tried Baxmodels (http://www.baxmod.co.za/)
-
I think they look great, but the they are a bit pricy,we just need S.and S. models to release one, they do very good work.
-
35 just wasn't enough so here's another five :
These blokes were/are the generic NATO troops from Elhiem, I just removed the butt packs and replaced with pouches, then filed down the helmets to look more like WW2 Brit para helmets (not quite there yet).

I thinks perfect, nice and menacing, the Rhodesian A-10...kind of. I just like the fact that can cause such fear.

Finished off the base for the Crocodile MPV from S&S Models (http://sandsmodelsshop.com/product-category/african-vehicles/page/3/), so I've now run out of excuses to put off painting all the troops.

Latest PIP Bell 205 'Cheetah' No:8 Sq RhAF:

Good looking Cheetah and in faster time that it took Rhodesia to get those leftover relics to work right.
-
Great looking model, but the guns should be at the back of the troop compartment (where the side facing seats are), either side of the engine bulkhead which partly projects into the cabin. Passenger seating was on fore and aft facing benches ahead of that bulkhead.
:)

:)
Cheers, glad you like it. Re the gun position, I've not seen any RhAF 205s with the guns at the back, generally the twin Brownings were built into a swivel mount with an integral chair, which took up a fair amount of space, mounted behind the port-side front seat. There was another bench seat behind the pilots chair.

-
I stand most definitely corrected and thanks for the photos... every other armed Bell 205 I've seen has the guns at the back, but seemingly the Rhodesians cared nothing for convention.
lol
-
From what I've read, when these helos arrived they were fairly knackered and not the shiny new things expected. Had to be practically rebuilt.
I've not seen a 205 with guns sticking out of the door like that either, but it sort of fits with the set up of the other RhAF helicopters.
Here's my take on the gun prior to sticking it in (used a magnet)
-
Yes from what I understood it took almost a year to get them going, due to trade embargos. The other thing for gaming purposes, the Rhodesians could not waste ammo, short bursts only,Great research on the Helos.
-
Apparently the Rhodesians had a lot of remnant .303 ammo, but their 7.62mm and 20mm came from external sources like South Africa. By fitting the Brownings (which were ex-aircraft weapons), instead of the FN-MAG, they were effectively using up surplus ammo for no cost. The MAGs could then be issued to ground troops, who tended to waste less ammo for each kill. Earlier photos (I guess pre-'76, or thereabouts) often show a single MAG, but later ones seem to be almost entirely twin-Brownings.
They even tried experimenting with a quad-fit to replace the expensive 20mm on the K-Cars, although I gather that it was not a success. The Brownings also tended to jam a lot, which was why they fitted them in pairs on the G-Cars.
At least that's what Petter-Bowyer seems to be saying in Winds of Destruction...
:)

I can not believe you have spent cartridges on the mag gunners base!
I can! lol Excellent work as usual Ash! :D
-
@ Von Lucky: Just a bit of snagging on these blokes and then I'll take some group shots of the reorganised sticks
@juergen & Earter: :D I couldn't resist, the base needed some detail, and as he looks like he's giving something a good rev some spent brass seemed in order. It's just little bits of brass rod chopped up with snips. I'd suggest doing this inside a bag as bits tend to fly everywhere. Weirdly it looked really odd at first so I ended up putting shiny brass paint on er.. shiny brass.
The bloke on the far right of the first pic looks like he has a bit of a long neck, small head thing going on, so may swap the head for something else. After I've painted up the others. I've broken them down into groups of eight for painting so should hopefully be able to plow through it all.
-
Groups so far, some of the new bases need darkening down a bit to fit in.

Thanks.
So far I have about the equivalent of a full platoon of RAR plus six sticks of RLI.
A unit of 5 PATU, a four man tracker team & 9 others that look the part for RhSAS.
4 Allouette III, 1 Bell 205, 1 Lynx, 1 Hunter, 1 Crocodile MPV.Waiting are a Dakota and a Canberra.
Currently working on a commission build and paint of some more Alouettes.

Picked up some new bits from S&S to start a little Selous Scout column, a couple of Unimogs and a jeep:

Look out Mozambique here we come!!!! Awesome stuff.

This is the only picture I could find of the actual jeep:

(Picture lifted from Pamwe Chete by LtCol R Reid-Daly)
The Unimogs, still adding bits, but here's where I'm at so far:

Thing on the back was a 'home made' 37mm SNEB rocket launcher. Just noticed that the original has six barrels.

(Picture lifted from Pamwe Chete by LtCol R Reid-Daly)

Nice! And what's a couple of barrels between friends? lol
-
Still churning out nice pieces. I was in the local hobby store looking at 1/72 kits (I only own 3 Cold War Soviet supply trucks in my whole collection for this scale).
You and SundayHero are luring me with this scale/period.
-
@ Earther: Exactly, there's no way I'm chopping it down again, already shortened the barrels.
@ Von Lucky: Listen to the voices, buy some tanks to go with the trucks...
Update on the little Selous Scout's column, I've picked up some seated figures; IDF from Elhiem, sanded the helmets down a bit to look more like the WW2 Brit para helmets. There's one who comes with a rather nice MAG. Also got a couple of sticks worth of IDF grunts to convert into SADF Parabats at some time. Rest of the crew are Elheim pilots, a Green Beret (comes with beard) & an RLI bloke from Under Fire
(https://i.ibb.co/jDTKWnh/WIP-Mog-Sneb-L-side-LR.jpg)

Found these pics of a Selous Scout version of the Rhodesian army MAP transport
(https://i.ibb.co/DMphjbm/Untitled-2.jpg)
So picked up another Crocodile MPV from Shaun at S&S, attacked it with contents of toolbox, ended up with this:

Not quite the same, I couldn't face trying to shorten the front.
All together:

If it's any help, there were French M1951 and US M1 helmets in use too. The French one is being modelled by the guy in the top b&w photo.
-
Cheers Arlequin, plenty of the old SADF M63 in the mix as well. I can't think of any minis with those French helmets. There must be some Foreign Legion figures wearing them?
-
They were more iconic of the Algerian War than Indochina. However essentially it is the same dimensions as the M1, but with a somewhat shorter 'brim' at the front. A man of your capabilities should have no trouble filing back an M1 a little. The South African M63 was based on the French helmet and I think you'd have to be a real helmet geek to be able to tell them apart.
I've seen a photo of the RLI on 'conventional war training' in the early '70s with M1s... but only M1951s (or M63s?) on the RAR.
Motorcycle helmets are another option, but I've only seen those on photos of paratroops... and of course captured Soviet M-40 helmets for the Selous Scouts on 'externals' although figures depicted wearing them might be as rare as those in the French one.
The only ones I'm aware of that weren't used were the WWII 'Battle Bowler' and 'Turtle', which I'm led to believe were in stocks for BSAP riot control. Having said that I'm sure I've seen a photo from the early-'60s with RLI in 'Turtles'.
-
Wow!!!!great conversions. Spot on!!
-
Awesome thread, love it.
-
Just found this thread, don't know how I've missed it ! You have very similar interests to me, you need a converted bus for your Scout column, ready for Op. Virile ;) Dougie
-
@ Arlequin: I picked up some Under Fire modern Russians, for conversion bits, one of them has a great helmet that looks just the job for a moterbike crash helmet. Be nice to try and make a model of a bloke 'just landed', still in harness blatting away with his 9mm...
@ Jurgen, Gunner: Cheers chaps, I'm still after some more bodies to add to this lot.
I made this bloke out of left over bits (Head from S&S/ torso from UnderFire/ belt down from TQD). I was going to stick him in one of the trucks, but liked him enough to get his own base.
@ Dougie: A bus would be a great addition, I've seen pictures of the one you have in mind. Will have to keep an eye out for something suitable.
-
When you game with these beauties of yours ,what rules do you use?
-
@ Jurgen: I've got the Force on Force books, but not got to roll dice yet....
Been slowly putting together a Selous Scout column, all the trucks etc are from S&S and will get added to as the new releases come out:

Great looking group,I have a pkg., on the way as well, little longer here to the states....can't wait ,from looking at yours.
-
Nice one. Which variant did you go for, the SAS or the Scouts?
-
Both, plus buffels and Breliot Tramangals,I will add them to my ,one day pile,i believe in buying minis when they are available, because I have been gaming since the seventies and have seen many companys discontinue minis or just go out of business, with me going I should have bought those, so not anymore.
-
I also bought three Buffels. My stash is mainly aircraft kits; hunter, canberra, dakota, alouette, then T-55, PT-76 etc
-
My stash is about 200 20mm figures plus 28mm,Canberra,Lynx,3x Alleouttes,crocodiles,...numerous vehicles. When I was at Historicon in 2008 I bought all of Syr Hobbs hobby, Liberation Minis African figures as he was no longer going to carry them,I am going to run a Imagination .plus historical, but I need easy, peasy rules for my group, they are not a very rule reading group. So I might Jurgenize Force on Force .put in quik refence sheets and try that.

Cheers Juergen, I've only seen two pictures of these vehicles, one grainy B&W from the front right and a pretty good colour shot from the back. Both looked like they had a whip antenna on the side.

They don't mess around w/ the firepower on those vehicles, great job!
-
Lovely paint jobs.
:)
-
Nice stuff.
I want to get a 72nd Unimog with a zpu-4 for a PLO truck I have wanted to do for a long time.
I don't game, just build the models, so would like one with a full cab and interior but they seem hard to find in this scale or in 35th.
Plus the only zpu-4s in this scale that I can find are a highly detailed resin and metal kit by OKB GRIGOROV and a low detailed metal kit by RH Liberation.
Any other ideas or anything I have missed?
-
Those are the only two I've seen as well. I'd go for the OKB version, although 53 resin & 74 metal parts in a model that size sounds like a recipe for glued & bleeding fingers covered in frustration source!
-
My fear exactly. Me and CA don't get along in the best of times.
Though, if I mount it on a truck, the chassis is unnecessary so that should eliminate at least 5 of those resin bits ;)

Sounds like a good start! Only other option would be a ZPU-2, less bits, but still look good...

Gran models from Russia do a 1/72 (20mm) plastic ZPU 23mm in plastic. I picked two up from Ian Allan publishing for £8 each

Thanks Ste long 1971 I'll check it out.
I got some of the new packs from Under Fire. These were from the PATU set, I bought two sets, so had a go at some Brit Infantry in Borneo with the spares.

-
juergen: I used Humbrol 30 matt dark green, which isn't really dark at all, for a base; then for the yellowish blotches, Vallejo Japan Uniform, which is pretty much the same colour as English mustard.

Thankyou.

those Underfire minis are a perfect match!
-
Ash inspiring work as always. Is the mag from underfire minatures?
-
@ Juergen: They go well with the mortar. I think they are from both the RAR mortar pack and the RCL pack.
@Ste long: The MAG came from WeeFriends (http://eshop.friendshipmodels.org.uk/epages/BT3667.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/BT3667/Products/WBM76078) they are 1/76 scale, but look great especially on vehicles. Very nice, accurate casts.

thanx for the link.

Thanks for link Ash, very useful. whomakes the mag gunner figure on the puma
-
The bloke with the MAG is from Under Fire (http://www.underfireminiatures.com/page11.htm) Rhodesian African Rifles 7: RCL crew & RPG-7 Gnr. I just chopped off his left hand then turned it palm up and pinned it back on.
Just noticed I forgot to do the cap badges.

Thanks, these are excellent.

@ CarlLeyland: The base colour for the camo was Vallejo 'Dark Sand' & for the webbing 'Russian Uniform'.

Now that photobucket has effectively disappeared up it's own arse; I'm trying out imgur.com
-
Imgur is great, it's what I use and I've had no problems with it. Great painting!
-
I am afraid that I cannot see any photos on this thread, from imgur or photobucket.
And that is a real pain since I really want to see some well painted Rhodies.
-
No images here either.
-
Sorry chaps; I'm on yet another hosting site. Have started replacing all the old dead PhotoBastard links from the start.
-
Glad you're replacing the old PB photographs, it would have been a shame to have lost all of those. Hope it doesn't take you too much time.
-
Ash - your effort is appreciated. I love this thread.
-
Not quite finished, but I came across a bit of online info that is speeding things up. If you add a bit of code to the Photobastard links then you might get your pictures to show again.
If you go into modify/edit post and insert ~original between .jpg and [/img] as in .jpg~original[/img] then the original picture will show again.
A lot easier to keep pasting that than to re-post from another site. Effectively PB are still 3rd party hosting all the pictures, they have just pointed all the links to that holding picture, this seems to point it back to the original. If nothing else it makes ID'ing your pictures easier when dropping in fresh links...
I wish I'd found this sooner, as I had two Photo buckets and 'rage quit' on one and effectively binned a decades worth of 40K pictures...
-
Ash, what's going on with Photobucket? I host my photos on there, too. Is it they're getting rid of the free accounts and making you pay for them? Or are their pay accounts going wonky, too?

-
Someone at PhotoBucket came up with the grand idea to pretend that they were never a hosting site for 3rd party sharing and without any notice blocked all the links, to everywhere. Must have trashed just about every forum (in every subject) online. Read the feedback they are getting on their Facebook page, a lot of not very impressed people.
You used to be able to store a certain amount of data for free, in addition you could embed links on forum postings (etc) that would either target back to your Photobucket or show up in the forum thread. These links create an amount of data traffic so each account had a bandwidth limit, which you could upgrade for a smallish fee (I think they called it a Pro account).
Then three weeks ago they killed all the links and sent out emails saying "WE NOTICED THAT YOU HAVE BEEN USING PHOTOBUCKET FOR 3RD PARTY HOSTING" sort of implying that users had been doing something wrong, however if you choose to pay them a fee of $400 per year, they will turn all your links back on. Hense the search for new homes to share pictures from. At least that's my take on it, oh and the piece of code mentioned in my last post seems to be working...
-
That's awful! I pay them about $29 a year because I had so much stored on there. As far as I can tell, all my links here and my Travelerspoint blog are still working. Plus, I never received the email you're talking about. Weird. I'll go check out their FB page and see if I can figure it out...
Thanks for the heads up!
Mike Demana
-
Checked...here's why my links are still working:
If you were a Plus Account subscriber in good standing as of June 1, 2017,
you will continue to have all the privileges you have enjoyed including 3rd
Party Hosting until December 31, 2018 as long as you maintain your
subscription.
So I have a year and a half to figure it out.... :?
Mike Demana
-
I 'like' how they refer to the service you are paying for as a privilege, as though you should be bending over to thank them for taking your payments...
-
Not done anything for a while, so decided to raid the kit stash and dug out a 1/72 C-47 Skytrain, to convert to a Paradak and another Cessna 337 to convert into a Lynx. Also whilst rummaging for pictures I found this shot of a FAF Fireforce base, thought it might make an interesting display base.

Very interesting project
Nice display Base idea though I don't envy you painting all those drums
Can I ask what are the extra tubes under the wings of the paradak?
-
I maybe punching above my weight with this one, I think to do it properly it'll end up at least 3ft x 3ft, so lots more barrels to cast.
The tubes are to look like heat dispersal pipes for the exhaust.
Mid to late 1970 was when the then Soviet Union was equipping various insurgency groups with Strela-2 MANPADS. First generation of serious heat seekers, that generally locked in on the exhaust/tail pipe. The Rhodesian Air-force, with it's limited access to international markets, due to the UK gov getting the UN to imposes sanctions, produced 'in-house' solutions. It's effectively a long extension pipe attached to the exhaust (which normally puffs out just to the side of the engine), that sits inside another wider pipe. Airflow cools the gases and the extra length also has the benefit of shifting the heat spot away from the engines.
They also fitted similar shielding to their Alouette III helicopters. My understanding is that no aircraft fitted with this system was ever hit by a SAM (flying at 500ft probably helped avoid lock on as well).
Not so lucky their civilian airliners, two of which were shot down.

Great !
If you want to save greenstuff for your bases, use some modelling paste (arts supply) or 3D paint (from liquitex): same result, but easier to use and cheaper ;)
-
That's not green stuff, I'm too cheap to waste it on bases!
With green stuff, any left over that used to get rolled into little balls and flicked in the general direction of the bin, now gets jammed into a press mold and turned into ammo pouches or water-bottles etc.
This stuff on the bases is Squadron Green Putty.

Thanks, guys, for your efforts! The usual reaction I get from new players after they play their first game is, "Hey...these would also be great for _________!" (fill in the blank for whatever somewhat modern period).
I'm in the middle of planning my convention game to take to next year's cons. I'm thinking it will be a clash between South African and UNITA troops against Angolan and Cuban forces during the counter-attack at Cuito Cuanavale.

I have been following this thread with interest since the beginning and I promised myself I would stick to 28mm.... I was lying to myself of course this stuff is too amazing not to have a go at. This is just an amazing project, thank you for sharing.
I would like to know what rules you will use? I have just bought Spectre and have At Close Quarters by Chris Peers, also Black Ops. Force on Force seem to be out of print.
What would you chaps recommend and has anyone done an army list?
Thanks in advance, my army list is in progress and 28mm will be put to one side as I spend this summer amassing old kits and 20mm figures.
-
..Great job..John Wynne Hopkins will be jealous of the 7.5..came out well.

At the risk of inserting a crass advertisement, Wars of Insurgency provides games in which each player controls 3-5 squads. The squads range from a few figures to a dozen, or a single vehicle to several. Man-to-man scale. The rules are simple and easy to learn, but provide the flavor of a modern infantry firefight. Intended for those small scale actions in the hot spots around the globe from the 1950s to present.

The Airfix 1/72 Britten-Norman Islander. The RhAF had, I believe, about half a dozen of these in No:3 Squadron
(https://i.ibb.co/jgzrRS6/Mudzi-Rh-AF-Britten-Norman-Islander-Kotwa-airfield-14-8-78.jpg)
A pretty quick build, added a load of antenas, but could not get enough tension in the long bit of wire to pull it totally straight.

Looking good regardless, and good to see you around again.
I've used the melted/stretched plastic sprue over a candle before, but never such a long piece. Maybe thin guitar or florists wire (uncovered) would work next time?
-
Nice job.
I would suggest brass wire from cockpit to tailfin with a descending wire to the tail.
-
Thanks for the feedback chaps.
I think the problem with the wire was due to it coming on a spool, just couldn't get the curve out. It's also a tad too thick at 0.5mm, if i can find some 0.3 or 0.2 I'll redo it.

Ah, yes. I have a stock of 0.4mm (4mm scale handrail) and 0.7mm (7mm scale handrail) rod. Much better than trying to straighten wire from reels.

Had this idea floating around for a while,(to go with the gaming boards that currently exist only in my imagination); a deployment board for holding models not yet in game.

It's supposed to look like a section of a FireForce forward air field, such as Grand Reef or Mt Darwin. That was the idea, a lot of barrels later I made a little (2' x 2') board from 12mm MDF with 15mm baton underneath. A rough pencil sketch of where bits will go, some filler, some dodgy looking revetments and a bit of sand... and that's as far as I've got so far

-
Agree - I see many sessions with brown ink washes in your future lol
Red barrels, green barrels, blue barrels... all of them rusty! What was I thinking...
-
I would paint them all white, paint some as that faded blue and/or red and then go to town with a brown wash. The wash you can do 3-4 times, allowing some barrels only to be done once, twice, three or even four times. This will allow a variation in colour (remembering to let each wash to fully dry).
-
This will be the closest thing to a diorama I've done, vehicle bases and the odd building are the largest so far.
Hopefully all part of the learning curve that will one day be a load of 4 x 6' boards...

@FreakyFenton: I could never get any great continuity in the tufts I found online, always a different mix of colours; so i bought some 4mm 'dead grass' & 6mm 'straw coloured grass' and had a go at tufts and also putting some down direct on the base. I was surprised at how hefty a shock a battery opperated static applicator could deliver when handelled badly..!
-
Hrm, fair enough! Always prioritize work safety though! ;)
The board looks nice though, who makes the netting?
-
BTW - it is already looking like a nice display piece.
-
Love all the detail....would be perfect in a Musuem.

I'd have to redo it 2'x4' and get the barrels straight...
Still need to go back and trim some of the netting and put some sharper angles in it.

who makes the netting?
Sorry mate, completely missed this. The netting was a bit hard to source, I had an off cut of something similar, but had no idea what it was called. Ended up in the haberdashery dept at John Lewis who pointed me in the direction of a kids clothing store. Turns out its the stuff used to make ballet tutus. I found a head piece with a fair amount of material on it and chopped it up. Some sort of nylon material, sprayed it black which helped to stiffen it a bit, tried dry brushing silver on a bit, rubbing graphite on another (didn't even show up) so ended up lightly spraying a sandy tone, then went over it with some thinned down brown oil paint.
-
Found another piece at Salute that goes with the little store I bought last year. The two roof pieces are the same size ('ish) so swap quite nicely.

Thanks guys for all the feedback and encouraging comments. I think I'm sort of nearly finished:
I have completed a full platoon of RAR, 20 SAS, 7 sticks of RLI, 1 stick of RR trackers, 10 PATU, 4 farmers, 6 Intaf & 13 dismounted Selous Scouts along with a load of vehicles that have mounted crew. A fair amount of MPVs and some armoured cars. Could do with a couple of Land Rovers and a Bedford RL, but that's about it. I've done nearly all the aircraft; 2 x Hunter, 2 x Lynx (wheels up & down), a Canberra, an Islander, a Dakota (with 8 Paras in chutes), a Vampire, 2 x Bell 205, 4 x Aloutte III, there is a half done Puma in a box to go with the SAS for Op Uric, so I'll get to that along with a Mi24 to go with the Executive Outcomes little blokes, but even at 1/72 they do take up a lot of room. Could always do with more ZANLA...
Following on from my attempt at a 2' x 2' terrain board I have started collecting bits for a 2' x 4', which will hopefully spawn into 3 x 4' x 2' eventually.
-
Lovely work :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
From the book I have just read you need you need loads more ZANLA, thousands of them, ZIRPA, Ferlimo and why not some soviet advisers etc,etc
Years worth of work left for you to finish in this project :D
Book was "A handful of hard men"
-
'A Handful of Hard Men' is an excellent book with a very appropriate title. I'll dig out some other titles that may be of interest...
I've done a couple of soviet advisers with my FAPLA contingent & quite a few Cubans, along with BRDMs, BTRs and T54/5 and a lone Mi21 all in another thread along with SADF bits and bobs...

More filler may be the way forward...

I've been rumaging through the stash of unpainted stuff and got a few things to add to the 20mm Bush Wars thread, but no more Rhodesian things as yet.
Did find some helicopter kits that would need a fair amount of modification to look the part & a Puma that is definatly on the to do list as SADF for Op Uric

Well here's a helicopter. SAAF PUMA, bit of a mix of parts from two kits. With little RhSAS force for Op Uric.

Is that turbine in a literal armoured bath tub?
Cheers. My scratchbuilding leaves alot to be desired, & the air filters ended up a tad oversized.
The exhaust on the real thing were sat inside a tub primarily to prevent the heat seeker in a Strella (SAM 7) from seeing the hot spot, the exhaust pipe would have been angled up to so the gasses would be dispersed by the down draft.

Outstanding performance on your behalf, covering a fascinating period.

Thanks guys. Just a quick note; the technician sitting behind the guns in the reference photo is apparently the only bloke ever credited with shooting down a fixed wing aircraft with a helicopter, not with the set up in that picture but from a standard K-Car with a 20mm cannon.
-
Ash, did you once publish more pictures on how you converted the helicopters? I may have dreamt it but I seem to remember there being more pics? I only ask as I have one en route and a "how to" would be really handy... as would finding out where to source a door gunner and gun.
Also on their way is an order from Under Fire miniatures... reading this thread pushed me over the edge...

I think I may have, can't remember where I posted them and any links from back then (made the first eight years back) will have died when Photobucket disappeared up its own @rse.
There are a few pictures at the begining of this thread. Just had a rummage through an old HD and found the originals....
The good old Heller 1/72 Alouette III, was a very old OOP kit back then and the plastic was a tad brittle. I believe it has since been rereleased so hopefully better quality plastic. It's pretty much a follow the instructions build with the following modifications:
Chop off the starboard side cabin door (keep the pilots door).
Chop off the portside cabin & front door (works for both G-Car & K-Car).
Only add the rightside pilots seat and controls (no co-pilots).
The addition, if you wish to make them are:
Add armoured head rest/shield to pilots chair.
Add hood to control console (like a monitor glare hood).
Add port side front seats backwards.
Add bench seat to rear of cabin.
Pinched mine from another kit, made a press mold to make extras.
Add exterior steps (full length both sides for G-Car. Full length starboard side K-Car, short step port side).
Adapt exhaust pipe to point up at the end (never bothered).
Add anti Strella shield to exhaust (thin styrene works ok).
Add fat air filters. Made mine out of rectangles of plasticard, three or four layers each one slightly smaller. smooth the ridges with filler. Add filter looking front panel).
The ammo feed is incorrect in the above picture. The belts should go up the middle between the guns, with pipes catching all the doppies on the outer sides.
Add weapon mounts & .30cal (G-Kar. Elhiem have some nice guns. Also look on eBay for brass and resin barrels. Avro Lancaster barrels for the G-Kars, should be able to find some nice brass ones for the 20mm).

I got my pilots from Elhiem; I liked them as they don't have tons of kit like life jackets etc.
Technician/gunners I used the Vietnam crew from SHQ (HC1)
http://www.shqminiatures.co.uk/Ranges/Vietnam/Vietnammain.php?UID=2020050321052194.13.176.254
I also modified the rotors after an unprovoked attack by my daughters cat. Added some thin steel rod and attched the whole assembly with magnets, which makes storage a lot easier.
Let me know if you need any reference pictures, I have quite a few...
-
Ash thank you for taking the time to post the how to. I know this will have taken you a lot of time and effort and its very much appreciated. The seat layout and gun construction is particularly helpful and very clear, the four barrelled monster is a work of art! The kit I ordered is a Heller which I believe is still in production... it will be interesting to see how it takes to alteration. I have saved your pics for reference-I hope that's OK?
Thanks again for the help I am indebted.
-
No probs, happy to help. Quite frankly being stuck at home you gave me something to do! Any other querries fire away, I'm in all day.
One tip: when glueing the bottom part of the hull/cabin to the back end; tape the clear part of the roof/canopy in place whilst the glue drying. Helps to make the clear parts fit for when you get to that stage. I forgot on the last one and ended up with a bit of a gap, that required more plasticard and filler to sort and is still visable.
Also test fit any crew figures; I found some, once glued into their seats, touched the underside of the ceiling and stopped it fitting. If that happens it's easier to cut down the bottom of the chair than file down the head!
-
Good tips thank you. I have purchased the Lancaster gun barrels from fleabay and will probably start with a G Kar. For the support struts on seats etc did you use brass rod or fuse wire please? I may try and seat some crew in the passenger seats but as you mention it may be a bit of a squeeze! Elhiem pilots will be used for the pilot and door gunner I think.
Lock down has been a gift for me, horrible for the people affected but I have been wanting to actually do this for a couple of years now. My table is covered in little huts also of your design... again thanks for the help.
-
Thanks for that,, nice work.

I used brass rod for the side steps, I can't remember what gauge it was, but it came in straight lengths not on a roll. I drilled the holes into the body of the heli at about 45 degree angle and bent them with little round nosed pliers. I found it a lot easier to make each piece over long, superglue it all together and them trim the rods down once set. A lot simpler than trying to construct something and then glue it to the aircraft.
-
Perfect thank you Ash that is really useful advice. 20mm is growing on me again, I am sort of rediscovering the scale and will be trying this using the Spectre rules.

Thanks very much.
Which ZANLA minis are you using (Under Fire)?
-
Not looked in here for rather a long time. Ran out of 28mm things to chuck paint at, so finally succumbed to digging out a long ignored pack of 20mm.
Under Fire miniatures pack 'Selous Scouts 3'. They look a tad 'regular army' to me compaired to the 'armpits with eyeballs' look of the Scouts, but definitly work for early '70's RLI etc.

Nice job! Well Done!
My eyes made me move from 20mm to 28mm. But 20mm used to be my "one true scale"...
-
SUPER.
-
Excellent work on those Ash, my new regular wargamer spent time in the RLI and has some hairy stories to tell.
Cheers

Wow. What an incredible resource. Thanks your first post alone just answered tons of questions I had. Started working some old 20mm and 1/72 kits again over the holiday turning some Vietnamese into ZANLA and cross border SAS/ Sealous Scouts. Now I'll have to try the Heller Alouettes again. The first ones I got were the blue brittle plastic. Right pain to work on.

Not looked in here for a bit, cheers for the replies.

When I was in my teens a lot of the blokes a few years older had been in the RLI, those older than them PATU. Some very intense experiences had by some very young people. Friend I was working with in the late '80's served in 3 Co, made over 30 operational jumps, ontop of all the G-car insertions, all whilst under the age of 21.
With hindsight, I just wish I'd been better at scrounging old kit back then as so much stuff got burned in the early '80's. I do however recall a certain irrigation dam, at the base of which there is probably still a rather well rusted heap of old weapons languishing...

Thanks, glad it's all of some use.
I found the first Alouette kits on ebay, at that time the kit had been out of production for several years/decades, the ones I found were quite old, and as you noted the plastic was/is rather brittle.
Just harsh language alone was enough to make the wheels snap off. I believe the kit has since been re-released, hopefully 'new' kits should be a tad more resilient.

Ash I have the Cessna Lynx from a civilian kit, where did you source the guns from or are they scratch built? I looked through the thread but may have missed it if it's in there. Also do you have any tutorial for how you do the brushstroke camo? Insanely good work. Thanks again.

I used a couple of these kits, again ebay finds and old and brittle...

The guns on top of the wing were made from styrene tube, little bit of sheet styrene for the mount, GS for the cone shape at the back & gun barrels chopped off some .30 cals from Elhiem.
Re the camo pattern; The shapes in the pattern are quite large and tend to repeat fairly regularly. At this scale I just picked a few of the more stand out shapes from the pattern and plonk them in prominent places. Use reference pics to get the scale right ('ish).
Base colour: I think I used 'Dark sand' or 'Iraqi sand' (that'll get knocked back a bit by a green wash later), the brown bits 'chocolate brown', then the green bits a mix of 'olive green' & 'luftwaffer green'.
Once dry I tend to go over camo with a thin wash/filter layer, then a light drybrush of a sandy beige.

Here's a few pics of wepon mounts:
All the options; the mounted pods are for SNEB rockets, the cone over the front breaks away on firing.

At this scale they don't need to be too pretty, I think they do however make the Cessna look like a 'Lynx', even if just basically executed like the ones I did.
I used a piece of plastic tube (might even have been a piece from a Q-tip/cotton bud on the first). A rough little cone shape of green stuff, squished into place with fingers for the back end, same for the front with a gun barrel pushed into the end. Not too taxing, and if it looks crap have another go..! Last bit was just a little rectangle of plasticard to raise the gunpod slightly above the wing.
Mk 1 gun pods are quite thin, pretty sure that was a q-tip or one of those plastic bristle protecting tubes from a paint brush.
Mk 2 gun pod, proper syrene tube (Evergreen type stuff), bit bigger, hopefully looks a little better, resin gun barrels (look for 1/72 Lancaster guns).

Nice work there, Ash. Well done! I really like the Cessna...
-
Excellent detail. Keep up the good work.
-
Nice painting.
-
Thanks Ash. I'm looking for some various 1/72 models (OV-10 Bronco, A-1 Skyraider) that might have massive payload of accessories to see if I can kit mine out. Yours definitely look the part.
-
Not looked in here for a bit, thanks for all the kind words gents.
@ CPT Shanks: Another option for ordanance. Italeri used to ( may well still) sell a box of 'USA/NATO AIRCRAFT WEAPONS' in 1/72.
Would have all the shapes of bomb and rocket pods needed to represent the under-wing load out.
-
Those are lovely additions. Fond memories of having lived in Southern Africa.

Fantastic work with the Cessna mate, almost as good as the Forgeworld Arvus you painted for me! 😉

Thanks David. Had good fun painting 40k stuff, that said I don't miss it. Repainting all my old Guard blokes in Multicam was the end for me, I think that's when I got into the 20mm Bush Wars stuff.
I still have one of the Arvus (still have all my old 40K stuff, sitting in boxes in storage).
Somewhat off topic, but just to see if it would fit, I shoehorned a 40K AFV into a piece of terrain I made for the 28mm 'Nam stuff, sort of looked ok.
-
Yup…good times but never going back myself either……my Drogans are all boxed up, and at some point I must sell them I suppose. My arvus is nicely packed up too. Could use it for other generic sci fi though, so may hold on to that.
-
I haven't played a game of 40k since 4th ed, but I've got friends that remained faithful. Up until the last two or three years that is. Most of them seemed to see another system they liked the look of (Mostly Infinity or Bolt Action) and then branched out from there. I think the only 40k I've still got are a handful of Plague Walkers and some Traitor Guard for an INQ28 idea that never got off the ground.
I still collect and play Titanicus though. Epic Armageddon has been a constant for me over the last 20 years, so the new titan love from GW grabbed my attention. The game has enough tactical challenge and resource management to keep me engaged.

Picked up the RSF search team / engineers, from Under Fire Miniatures. Not tried painting the camo in 20mm for a while. Never painted a dog before.

Thanks. It started as enough for a Fire Force, then had to have a go at the K car- Alpha, would have been rude not to...

Thanks Jim. The gaming mat is now back rolled up, worked a treat, thanks for the great idea.

I think I'm pretty much done with this one. Still got a few half painted figure, just can't face painting that fiddly brush stoke pattern anymore.
That and 20mm is too small for my Mk1 eyeballs to focus on. Probably stick with the 28mm for now.
Just went through this thread, and I am shocked: what a great topic and what a great collection!
Thanks Freddy. Much appreciated for the feedback, glad you like them. Had a lot of fun with this lot.
excellent work on that lot
Ta very much. Straight back at you both, excellent work on all those models you've made. This project wouldn't have been possible without all the weird and wonderful vehicles.
-
Thanks Jim. The gaming mat is now back rolled up, worked a treat, thanks for the great idea.
Glad I could be of service! :D
My mat is still deployed. Still have group shots to take of my 1920s/1930s US gangster stuff, my Old West stuff (my smallest collection), my Fenian Raids in Canada stuff, and my War of 1812 stuff. The Gangster stuff is next, after our weekly game Friday, in which some of them will take part. That should finish my 28mm stuff. Then, perhaps, it's on to my 20mm stuff...
-
You have outdone yourself. Spectacular paint jobs.

Thanks Juergen.

I like the look. Seems like:
1. knocked out this month
2. Knocked out this year (or decade)
3. Been here for a LONG while.

Some parts of Africa are rainforests, some deserts, both are eating up abandoned vehicles really fast (rainforests are obvious, deserts have the big daily temperature changes).

Fourteen months later...
Having literally cleared out all 28mm stuff, and having these taunting me for over a year I put the Mk 1 eyeball to the test and chucked some paint at 20mm.
I now have eye strain...
