Title: Post Apocalypse/Mad Max Vehicles - Update: 28 Mar 20: V8 Interceptor (Pg 9)
Post by: Overlord on April 20, 2008, 06:50:51 PM
I've been adding odd bits here and there to some new vehicles for post-apoc games.

This is my progress so far:

This is a Grendel(?) resin buggy. All I did was to replace the gun turret with a roof rack and various bits of gear.

This is a heavily modified buggy based on a Matchbox toy I got from Toys'R'Us some time ago.  Once again I've added assoted junk, fuel drum, jerrycans, etc.
The original version (repainted red) can be found here: http://www.combatzonechronicles.net/cozox/rode3.htm

This is one of 2 toy buses I bought on Ebay from the USA. (Postage was almost as much as the items, but still wasnt too expensive)
The main body is Diecast whilst the chassis and "glass" is plastic. First thing I did was to take it apart.
This was fairly easy as its held together with a couple of screws. The windows will be left unglazed in the final bus.

I sculpted a driver, using the lower half of a figure I butchered for another project. with a Westwind spare head.
The roof rack was added and again more junk, this time covered over with Greenstuff tarpaulins.
The front fighting position is pastic card, balsa and 2 doors from a diecast car. I think the dover blade is GW.

Apart from the driver nothing is glued in place yet as I need to paint the driver and bus interior.

I will add more WIPs as I go along....

They look very nice! Though in black the pictures aren't always that clear. I would love to see them painted :)

And that Grendel buggy looks very nice BTW :)

Sorry for the threadomancy, but I finally finished one of the vehicles.
Lots of excuses for the delay, LPL2, work, life, apathy, shiny new toys, etc  ::)

Here is the finished version of the bus.
Ready to hit the wide open post-apocalyptic roads or fight its way through the Downtown mass of Zeds....

I went for a cobbled together look and I'm pretty pleased how it came out.
The protection for the windows and wheels is a mix of various plastic card, balsa, hatch from a GW Rhino(?), etc

No progress on the other 2 vehicles as yet, just give me another 3 months or so...... ::)

Very nice mate, just barricade that side door as that looks flimsy as hell and possibly put some spikes or forks in the dozer as those little gaps are noticable.

Love the paintjob and the tarps are excellent, both in smoothness and paint.

I bought 3 of them several years ago from Toys'R'Us.  I wish I had got several more as they no longer seem to be available.  When I get home I can check to see exactly what they are called, any markings, product number etc.
I haven't had any luck myself with finding more.  :'(

Thanks to everyone for the feedback  8)

I'm afraid there isn't much to go on.  :(
All it says on the underside is: Matchbox. c1998 Mattel Inc. Made in China.

It originally came with a trailer on which you could fold out (deploy) 2 legs to stabilise it. This trailer fires a springloaded projectile.
I have kept the trailers, but the are currently archived (somewhere... ::) ) for future use in some other project.

On the left is the buggy as bought.  The upper body is metal whilst the lower chassis is hard plastic.
The rollcage, bullbars and side bins are soft plastic.

It helps indeed. I now know exactly which vehicle it is and am cursing loudly  >:(

I remember the range and kept looking at them, however the only one that seemed like it would fit the bill is the one you've used, however I could never find one in the shops to check the scale. I could probably have easily got them online at the time though!

Damnit!

Thanks though, if I find some again I'll know to snap them up.

GW included spikes for the 'dozer blades with their Rhino kits, so it might be near at hand.

The second bus I intend to convert for use as an moveable entrance barrier, like the one in Mad Max 2.
(Although that was actually a Commer).
I will add plastic card "metal" plating to one side of the vehicle.
It will probably get a (yellow) repaint, rather than the weathering of the original paintwork on the first bus

Unfortunately, there is no manufacturer name on the bus. All it says is "Made in China", with the number SS 9852.
I do remember it being described as 1:50 scale, which would be about right.
I no longer have the paperwork from when I bought it on Ebay so can't check its original description on there.
My Ebay account suggests the seller is no longer registered on Ebay (In the USA).

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Well my young pupil, next time come to me and I will teach ya the ways of the SearchFu.  LOL But seriously, that is a buggy from the Matchbox Mission Bravo series. It is the LSV Recon to be specific. I have a couple of them i retreived from ebay a few years back. The serios has a few useful models. At the moment there is one on ebay now. Just look up Mission Bravo and scroll down to the eBay Stores or just look up LSV Recon to find it quickly. Hope this helps. :-)

I have seen, from someone here i think if not from another group of the Buddy L school bus makes a good PA vehicle. The Buddy L Greyhound is another good one. Either i saw it here or another group. Both can be found on eBay for real decent prices and shipping. Just do a search for buddy L Greyhound of buddy L School and have some fun. :-)

Edit: Of course the person with the buses is the one and only Pappa Midnight.

Time to re-start:

The 2 cars are in exactly the same condition they were at the start, so about time they got some paint on them.

The bus needs converting as an armoured gate and I need to build the gateway too.  A few miniatures to convert/paint aswell.

Thank you all.  :)

Another triumph for the 'It's Alive...!' idea.
An absolutely inspired idea by the Prof!  We all have projects that have languished for one reason or another.  Personally, as I'm trying to get back into things after a break for much of last year, this couldn't have come at a better time.

I've dabbled with Mad Max/PA inspired games over a number of years, some of it pre-dating the forum.  If things go well there is a lot more I would like to do ultimately, combining older stuff with new.  Here's some I made earlier:

Original Mad Max vehicles/miniatures project: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=2198.msg22881#msg22881
"It came from the desert" project from BLAM 12: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=47304.msg550431#msg550431

First "Its alive!" update:

The Grendel buggy (and previously painted miniature):
http://www.scotiagrendel.com/Products/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=2743

It is a bit clean to my eye, so I may add a bit more weathering.  The painted windscreen was a bit of a test and I'm not sure it came out as well as I had hoped.  Gloss or satin varnishing the glazed part might help.

Yes, rather balloon-like tyres with no tread whatsoever

Would you consider bringing this to BLAM this year?  ;D
Possibly, depending how I get on with all the other bits.  I don't actually have a specific game/scenario in mind so far, but will need to have a think about that at some time anyway.

Onto the "Gate Bus":

By undoing two screws on the underside, removing a small clip on one side and with a mild amount of brute force, the bus was disassembled:

The seating section was removed by levering it off 3 mounting pillars.  I wanted to replace some of the seats with drums of fuel etc (SPOILER: as per the film):

A section was removed and replaced with plastic card:

Space to add drums and other junk:

All the light fittings and side rubbing strips removed for repainting of the body.  Very easy to do by trimming the rear of each piece, which had been melted to hold in place:

The main body needs re-spraying, but the weather/time of year isn't particularly good to do so. :?

The bus body and interior has now been sprayed brown, as a basis for the re-painting in yellow.
The original dark blue was almost impossible to cover with straight yellow:

The basis of the second half of the gateway:
MDF base and block of blue foam to support the tyres and a walkway.  Textured with thinned household wall filler.

Groundwork painted to match existing terrain and baseboards.
Foam painted black so that the blue won't show through the piles of tyres.

The interior side, clad is various bits of distressed plastic card:

Tyres, lots of tyres:

The tyres came (mostly) from a farm toy set and spares sold for Corgi/Dinky diecast cars, plus a few from old 1/35 kits:

I'm glad I decided to get a variety of tyres as it looks more convincing than using identical ones.  Trying to arrange them "randomly" took a while...

I bought them on Ebay around 7/8 years ago.  I have no idea who the seller was except he was in the USA (L.A.?) and sold a wide variety of toys.  I bought 2 identical buses as the postage to the UK was no greater than for one.  They were listed as 1:50.  They are exactly the same size as the Ainsty derelict school bus, so I have little doubt the same model was used as the basis for the master.

Looking good Paul! What are the tyres made of, rubber or plastic? How are you planning to paint them if they're rubber?
They are rubber, so my intention is to just drybrush/weather them and hopefully matt varnish after.  I will need to do some tests before I do that to the tyrewall itself.

Coming along really well!  Cant wait to see your progress!  How big do you plan to make this?
This project has had bits added to it on a very irregular basis for many years.  I would like to build most/all of the Mad Max 2 compound eventually, along with some MM3 Bartertown type shacks etc.  It doesn't really have a defined end, but gven how well its going so far, I would hope to add more before "Its alive!" ends in June.

Heavy Crossbow:

Scratch-built with plastic card/strip/rod/tube, brass rod, wire and aluminium mesh.  The pyramid base is loose fitting, allowing the weapon to be rotated in situ, with the brass rod fitting into a tube set into the tyrewall base.  There are around 50 separate components and it was rather fiddly at times, but is now a reasonably robust finished item.

Rather over-engineered, but (as with so many builds) I was making it up as I went along.

I never tyre reading this thread.
Tread carefully.....  >:D

Meanwhile, back at the bus...

I've sculpted the (partial) body of the driver, adding a spare Crooked Dice head I had:
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/44/369-280320143932-44935288.jpeg) (https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/44/369-280320143932-449361268.jpeg)

Supplies for the bus interior:

The boxes are a single piece of blue foam cut and painted to look like a pile of boxes.  I added some fuel drums (roughly cast in plaster years ago) and a putty sheet.  There are a few more loose items currently being painted.

Bus exterior:

More ProCreate for the sheets that hang from the side of the bus.  They have been sculpted onto thin plastic card as my intention is to make them removable for when the bus drives off.

The sheets, along with a (removable) plastic card shelf and a rope ladder (galvanised wire mesh).  Base colour finished on the bus body.

The driver turned out great! I guess amputees get all the worst jobs after the apocalypse.. at least he gets fed.  ;D

Nice work not doing the legs, I spent ages giving a pilot a pair of legs (using 2 figures) only figuring out at the end you cannot see anything below his chest :(

I added some armour panels to the other side of the bus.  A piece of plastic card was cut to size, but slightly smaller than required.  Individual panels were then added which slightly overlapped the underlying piece.  On the reverse I glued several 90' angle pieces that would sit in the windows and support the armour.

The finished bus:

The armour, sheets, ladder and shelf are all removeable.
It was only after taking the photos I realised that I hadn't placed some bits on quite straight.... Lucky I hadn't glued them like that!

I have also finished both sides of the gateway, but as one half forms my entry for the current Build Something contest I will wait until its conclusion before posting.

Have been to Toys'R'Us last Saturday and discovered the SIKU-range of diecast models, many of them in 1/50 or 1/55 scale! Among them a fine yellow schoolbus like the one shown here in 1/55 scale. The link shows 3 pics and a hand for scale comparison, it looks pretty nice to me:

http://www.toysrus.de/product/index.jsp?productId=4622721 (http://www.toysrus.de/product/index.jsp?productId=4622721)

It's in the german shop, but you could even mailorder it.

Siku is 1/55 generally for cars and for most of the trucks.
Some trucks are 1/50 and there is a agricultural range of 1/32 and another of H0 scale in 1/87.
The scale is always visible on the box.

All the same tyres just looks wrong.  By adding a few variations it looks much better, although arranging them in a "random" pattern takes a while.

A minor update as I rush to complete the last few bits to beat the deadline.

Old Copplestone Grenadier sculpts and a dodgy wip sculpt of my own:

This will be the driver for the next buggy:

Converted by replacing his right hand holding a pistol with one pointing. Added a bow to his left hand and replaced a sheathed shotgun on his back as a quiver for the bow:

Minor conversions to change their firearms for crossbows:

He is indeed one of Marks; part of the original Grenadier Future Warriors.

He was in an original blister pack with the tall scavenger next to him (Yes, they had been in the lead mountain for that long!).  The packaging went in the bin ages ago, so I can't tell you the exact description.  I can't find any pics of it online and it isn't part of the EM4 or Merliton ranges.

He was in an original blister pack with the tall scavenger next to him (Yes, they had been in the lead mountain for that long!).  The packaging went in the bin ages ago, so I can't tell you the exact description.  I can't find any pics of it online and it isn't part of the EM4 or Merliton ranges.

Yeah - my Copplestone Fu is quite good - but I couldn't pin-point him either.

Like the new buggy!

My second attempt proved slightly more successful!

Thanks for the nice comments chaps.  :)

Its actually longer than that Richard...
This is the earliest dated photo I can find for the project: A wip of the Tanker dated 01 Apr 2002.....
...A mere 18 years ago! :o

In general I flit from one project to another, rarely ever really completely finishing one, but sometimes returning years later, one day blurring into another.  This is most evident with my Mad Max.  It isn't something that I really ever game with these days, but has become more of a modelling project for my own pleasure.  I still have a large waiting stash of vehicles, terrain and scratch-building items for it.  Although I haven't built or painted much for it in recent years, I have done quite a bit of Apocalypse themed scratch-building/mastering for the Crooked Dice 7TV Apocalypse range.

The length of time it has taken means various bits of the project are scattered around the forum.  In the past couple of days I have gone back and uploaded (hopefully) all the photos lost in the Photobucket 'event'.  I need to collate links all the threads in a single list, hopefully over the next few days.
