OK, so after receiving the IHMN rules, I am highly inspired to do some VSF/steampunk gaming. I don't have a ton of suitable figures, so until I decide exactly what to get actually get it, I wanted to start a new modelling project.
I love the look of the aeronef flyers, and decided to make one for my future Confederate raiders company, hence the Confederate Air Ship Mosby.
After looking through the forums here for images and inspiration, I decided sort of how I wanted it to look. I made a frame out of some scrap foamcore, and have covered the side of it with plasticard. My hobby time is very limited, and I am quite pleased with one day's progress. I will post more as I am able to complete more...

It's actually turning out a little boxier than I had intended. Perhaps the next one will have the walkways along the sides exposed rather than covered.
Thanks for looking.

An interesting project milord. I shall look forwards to updates.

Looks promising, good luck.

Thanks for the kind words...I've made a little more progress lately. I've finished the planking on the foredeck and on top of the main cabin area. And I added a viewport to the front slope. The ladder steps have not been glued down yet, but I wanted to see how they'd actually look on the risers. So far so good - I hope to have some more modelling time later in the week. Onward and upward!

Nice.
Are the nail heads and divisions on the planks simply drawn onto long strips?
I look forward to seeing more.
Thanks.

Yes, I draw them with a lead pencil and press down to make indentations. The plan is for the lines and nail holes to stand out after I paint, wash and dry-brush the deck. We'll see how well the theory works! :)

Really lovely so far! The wood looks so good, almost a shame to paint. ;)
I shall be posting a link to this in the 'Aeronef...' sticky, so feel some pressure to continue. lol
And, about the only way it can't be box-y is to make it long, I fear. Which wouldn't break my heart!

Looking good - and pretty big, too - of which I wholeheartedly approve!
Keep it up, that man!

You could use a light wood stain to get color onto the wood it can look really nice. I used wood stain on this.

It was a dark stain.

Likewise - I use a walnut woodstain, followed by drybrushing with sand-coloured paint:

If the Colonel does it, it is worth a shot. His work is splendiferous.
The build looks good, so far, though! Keep at it, sir. I may even be convinced to finally start working on my long postponed German aerial gunboat.

This is great work m'lud Astley, please keep it up and keep posting about it!
I should warn you though, that you are in danger of forcing me to contract a large dose of inspiration-itis that may just force me to pull my finger out and build my own flying ship ...

Looking great so far. Out of curiosity and due to my noobness I'm unsure how you plan to use this. Is it going to be fixed scenery, moving scenery or a vehicle with weapons etc?

I am not 100% sure yet. Probably all of the above depending on the game.

Yes, his work is magnificent!
I may try the stain. My problem is that I am not the neatest at gluing down the boards, and where glue gets on the tops of the board the stain will not penetrate. SO perhaps a straight paint job will be best. We'll see...

This weekend will likely be quite busy with "real life" :) so I am trying to get an hour each evening to work on the ship. I've made some more progress...
This shows the ship from the front, with the edges of the deck attached:

Another view:

The rear. If I do say so myself, I am quite pleased with how the curved rear deck, door, porthole and ladders came out:

And I am also happy with the stairs. I designed them so that the bases would fit between the steps:

Very nice indeed, Sir!
More rivets, please!
-
More rivets, please!
Thank you for the kind words!
More rivets are coming, but I am dreading them so I am leaving them for last. The rivets you see so far are model railroading track nails. I drilled holes before driving the nails in and gluing them in place - they are actually holding together the various sections of the edge of the deck.
-
Rivets are nothing to fear, my friend! Personally, I have made them my slaves...
I am curious as to why you aren't painting the components as you build - in particular, the area behind the steps may be tricky. Is there madness to your method?
-
FUNCTIONAL rivets! That must multiply their presence! lol
Glad to hear you're pleased; I know I am, and hope you will maintain momentum, and more important, morale.
Well done!

The steps have not been glued in place yet - I do plan to paint before I make them permanent. I won't paint the body of the ship until I am satisfied with the detailing, and add many, many, rivets! :) And I haven't decided yet exactly what to do with the underbody of the ship - whether to leave it flat or add some sort of under-cabin. And some type of propulsion system needs to be added, and I also still need to do some sort of railing around the deck, and decide what deck weapons I want, and how to model them... phew!
No method at all to any of this madness - I am making it up as I go along!

Excellent idea. $4 or so for 400 - Ebay link (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HO-OR-N-SCALE-MODEL-RAILROAD-TRAINS-LAYOUT-ATLAS-TRACK-NAILS-2-OUNCE-PACKAGE-/330889906004?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item4d0a934754).
Must find a UK supplier or look in a good DIY store.....

Excellent! I use exactly the same method!

Shaping up nicely! :) It looks like she'll be a bit of a beast to contend with.

did this ever "get off the ground"? wonderful modeling as far as the pictures show. great proportions, consideration for purpose, and detailing. please say "There's more".

Lord Astley hadn’t been present in the forum since 2015. So I think we’re unlikely to find out unless anyone knows him.
-
Lord Astley's blog (link under his avatar), doesn't feature it at all, and the Flickr account (https://www.flickr.com/photos/plasticpirates/albums/72157634008847808) doesn't have any extra photos. So probably a stalled project (for now).

Coming along very well.
