I love the little creatures Gem but that scene's straight out of Flashman, brilliant smooth paintwork Doc  :-*

Wow. The stripes! The cloth! The desert painted in the glasses of the protagonist! (or he is the antagonist in this case?). Just brilliant, Dr_Mathias!  :-*

Really beautiful painting Gem, these sorts of figures really appeal to me and you did a fantastic job on them. The setting makes it even better.

This round was something of a personal challenge of mine. The Eureka civilians have been in my lead pile for a long time, maybe longer than anything else barring some Foundry DA I got around the same time about ten years ago. I simply had to get them done and complete the set, especially since the rest of them showed up in my first ever LPL entry in Season 5. They're great figures and I have no clue why it took me so long to get to them. I felt like I had to get the last Hasslefree Nubian warrior done as well, since her compatriots showed up in the previous LPLs. None of these things fit in the round 10 theme  ;)

Sadly I broke my own LPL rule of 'no new figures' for this round... I felt like I needed the pelisse, so I had to buy a box of Perry Hussars at the last minute (arriving Thursday) to get one :-I

Both gorgeous pieces of work.

Gem-I recognize the Snail Cartographer from Dark Sword. Are the Platypus and the Archer theirs as well?

geee ... again ... mind blowing!
The wizardly snail with "wanderlust" finally made it! The true meaning of keeping the house(hold) with ya!! That snail surely is the last in turn everywhere ... but if You sneak up behind it ... Your're stuck, too! ^^

both entries deserve to win!

best wishes
DK

Phew - decision made, but it was soooo close. I also just noticed the Lord of the Rings reference in the title of the animals entry (a bit slow this morning), which made me chuckle.

I went Harem purely based on how our man seems to be soooo pleased with himself! lol

Really wonderful work from both! Certainly the most difficult choice this round.

just one question: where did you find those FABULOUS windows and gates?

Reaper Miniatures "League of Justice and Caek" (sic) I think... ;)

I think this matchup summarizes this round: awesome entries that make you feel bad for the one you didn't vote for. Those critters, Gem, are soooo cool! But the doctor has nearly surpassed himself with this scene. Those "Alhambra" type windows, the partially dressed European making his escape....wow!

I think all LPL participants dread this type of draw as an opponent... lol

That Shaftsbury figure .. is that a conversion?

Yes, the pelisse, scabbard, and sword is from the Perry plastic British Hussars set. The trousers, glasses, and little beard are greenstuff. The pelisse had to be cut in half and folded in a bit to wrap the figure convincingly. I used the 'melted sprue' technique I learned from Captain Blood to get it right. I'm not sure how I went so long without using liquid cement on plastic figures, its a godsend.

He's something of a slighty heavily idealized self portrait :)

just one question: where did you find those FABULOUS windows and gates?

They're the same type of windows I used on my 'Disarmed in Algeria' entry in Season 5... just printed out. I found some I liked and Photoshopped them to get the size I wanted, then I glued them onto a sheet of matboard to give them a raised appearance so they fit in with the dimensionality of the building convincingly. I thought about using that plastic grid stuff found in sewing stores but I didn't think that would look as good. I'd like to find some nice Middle Eastern/North African windows that are actually dimensional but I haven't found just what I want yet. I have a couple Turkish balconies on the way from Germany, they look great on their website and can't wait to see them.

If you want a digital file with windows so you can print your own I can link it.

Thanks for the comments all, this was hard to finish on time- everything except the uncovered table was started and finished in six days. I was asking Phipps about his building texturing method on Wednesday! If I wasn't a teacher off for the summer, with a wife picking up the slack around the house, this wouldn't have happened.

I instruct at a two-year community college :)
Drawing, Painting, Design, Art History, among other things... I taught Graphic Design and Typography for several years. I'm kind of a 'jack-of-all-trades' when it comes to art although I enjoy the renaissance era techniques (egg tempera, silverpoint) most.

I do very little to no 'fine art' anymore though, for a variety of reasons although I've been focused on miniatures for quite a long spell now. Started painting 25mm Dungeons and Dragons miniatures in 3rd grade, about 28 years ago, using toothpicks and Testor's enamel. No websites to tell me I was doing it wrong back then :)

Doc, if painting your way is wrong, I don't want to be right!  :)

Gen Lee--the snail cartographer is made by Dark Sword. The other four are reaper, but I think only the otter is still in print. :(

LOL, I actually admire your technique, particularly the soft transitions between colors and elements, quite a bit. There were a few painters in the old early 90s White Dwarf Golden Demon showcases that had that wonderful subtle 'soft' look. Its perfect for those critters you've painted. I've never really tried that, if anything I've started going the opposite direction and emphasizing the linework separating details. I blame the Foundry painting books, as well as Bugsda and Captain Blood  ;)

Two very different, but very good entries. Extremely difficult choice.
