Title: The British Invasion of Japan! *Small store house complete 08.01.17*
Post by: OSHIROmodels on July 10, 2013, 11:29:36 PM
A new range under development and here is the first one with a coat of primer  :)

Suitable from the Boshin war right up till the second world war at a push. Most of the buildings will only be suitable for the latter half of the 19th cen.

I've got another one on the go being stuck together so hopefully more before the weekend  :)

cheers

Got some paint on the first one and rather pleased with the result  :)

For the kit the door will be cast from either resin or metal and the roof tiles will be stuck ontom the roof plate all ready to go. I haven't got enough tile sheet to do the roof at the moment but that will change at the weekend.

The shop that was mentioned has had to have some tweaks made to it so that'll be posted at a later date (end of the weekend hopefully).

That looks excellent. Very tempting.  :-*

Did you see the Rurouni Kenshin movie by chance? It's based on a manga, so not very realistic (at all), but it's set in early Meji period, so may offer some inspiration here and there (mostly in the first half, when we see more of the setting).

Finished the brick kura and started on a shop  :)

The shop is a bit too large as it is but I've altered the drawing and will re-cut soon. I'm carrying on with the first one as it seems pointless to bin it as it still works as a building.

AS with all my flat pack kits, the roof is removable and the floor in the shop is also removable (more on which later).

Shop first, just the front done for now...

And then the finished kura...

Made a coastal battery tht will fit with my other terrain boards and as soon as there are enough figures I'll get a game in  ;)

Blue foam construction, scored block work and then a thick texture of sand, filler and glue painted to match (hopefully) the rest of my boards.

Needs some guns and will make a start on them after our next show (Colours).  There will also need to be some naval power and I'm hoping to make a couple of the paddle steamers that took part.

Great new items James, how big the range will be? And are there still more "normal" Victorian era buildings in the pipeline?

Cheers matey  :)

To be honest the range could be huge but as much as I would like to do it all it wouldn't be fiscally feasible  :(

It probably won't stop me though  :D

Working on a few more buildings at the moment but with normal work being so busy at the moment it's difficult to fit them in with everything else.

Something a little different for the period and probably not a kit but useful and fun nonetheless...

A steamship!

Loosely based on one of the British ships In the Japan area around 1862-63. Only the basic deck and a couple of guns assembled for now but I'll be in work tomorrow and will get the wooden deck, masts and hopefully the sides sorted.

The guns are from HLBSC and although I could quite easily make my own time is precious at the moment  ::)

It measures 560mm in length and 140mm across the beam although I think I might have to make it a little wider given the size of the guns.

More to follow tomorrow  :)

A couple of figures in the form of Shogunate officers (troops still being mounted on painting stands at he moment).

Quick piccies and better ones will be taken when the troop are done.

I did get some more  :D

But the original first unit is almost done, just straps and guns to go but in the meanwhile here are the two officers with finished bases and a new commander (slightly out of focus).

The commander is a Copplestone naval figure with a simple head swap, quite suitable I think  :)

How much difference is there between the standard black/blue uniforms and the summer white uniforms, and what side wore them, would be nice to paint up a unit or two

Bit of a late reply I'm afraid. Not entirely sure there were any white summer uniforms in the Boshin wars, I think it was developed as the army became more standardised.

I've renamed the thread as with the Perry releases for the BIF got me to thinking of a project for this year (and the next, and the next ad infinitum  ;) )...

The British Invasion of Japan!

I'll do a bit of research into it to see if it could've been plausible but I don't mind if it isn't as it's a bloody good excuse for an outing  :D

The first 'new' figure complete for this is one of the Rorkes Drift character figures but given different coloured hair and slightly different clothes.

I've got a couple of these sets and they are a joy to paint. I know the purists won't be happy (not entirely sure myself) as to mixing these with the Perry figures but what the hell  :D

These are the rest of the Brits I've got on the go at the moment and there will be more to follow as this project takes shape  :)

Thanks again gents  :)

Got a new building on the go. It's a company storehouse based on a real one in Hakodate, unfortunately the real one was built in 1907 so I'm going to cheat a little bit, alter it and pretend it was around 40 years earlier than it should've been  lol

Not the best photos as I'm still arranging my desk  :?

Just the bare bones for now and the roof still to design but hopefully the idea is there. Got a lot of storage items to make as well  ::)

Woke up at 4:00 this morning with the start of a manky cold but converted these Perry ACW gun crew into Shogunate ones.

Inspiration from OllyReeds great thread here http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=65978.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=65978.0)

Just some strip styrene added to make the belts and 'webbing' with the odd cartridge pack and of course some head swaps. I had a look in one of my books to see if I could get away without adding the longer jacket and it would appear so  :)

Inspired by Olyreed's desire to do a Boshin demo game next year I did a bit more on the large warehouse.

I've made the doors and hinged them (of which much swearing took place). The brass rod is 1mm with a 0.5 hole in it and the hinges themselves are 0.5mm piano wire... They were a shit to stick on but they work  :D

I'll do the rest before painting completely and I've got the structure for the roof as well now.

Here are my LPL entries that I did for this project and when I get home I'll post a group shot of everything so far (not much I'm afraid lol)

The British troops below are obviously the Rorke's Drift set from Empress but I thought they would make good character figures for this project. I'm not too worried about the disparity in period (there's only 10-15 years between them).

Belated thanks chaps  :)

Doing some small houses of the period of which there a surprising amount left intact in Hakodate. I had another look at one of the previous buildings I'm doing just to check a detail (on Google street view) and decided to have a 'walk around' and there's plenty of original building still left. Almost enough to warrant going back there  lol

I've only cut one out so far, the rest are being drawn but it's not turned out too badly. Ignore the holes in the roof plates, these will be covered by tile sheeting.

Decide to look at the steamship again after playing Shogun Total War: Fall of the Samurai. I think the ships are fairly generic and I e spent a long time trying to research what sort of ships would've been in the locale at the time with limited (at least as far as images go) success.

So, I'm going to stick with STW:FS and improvise and make accurate where I can.

Still a long way to go of course and my main worry is getting the side planking right of which a tester can be seen above.

I'm sure it will work out in the end  :)

Cheers again fellas  :)

Clamour and you shall receive  ;)

The infantry man is actually a conversion using a Perry BIF body and a Bac Ninh head, seems to work quite well. Still a nobori to go on the pole but it's late.

To be honest, they look totally wrong before varnishing. It took me a few attempts to realise this. The highlights are used sparingly and only on the upper edges.

Not at the moment no although I do have a couple of (slightly blurry) photos of a model at the Goryokaku fort observation deck/museum. It's of a meeting between Perry and Japanese officials. The figures dipicted are marines but they would certainly do for figures in a wargame of it. I haven't looked to see if there is anything suitable yet though.

Quite possibly Franco-Prussian war figures for the French (and Germans) and Footsore are doing a range for them as the Foundry ones might be a bit small.

I suppose it depends on whether you want them in dress uniforms or fatigues. If fatigues then just use US figures from the Mexican American War. Old Glory and First Corps both do 28mm ranges although neither is especially pretty.

Jim this is, as always, top shelf.

I have a question, however, as my mind seems to work somewhat differently than yours:

Your builds are very tidy, do you ever consider making (or modding) your building to a more crooked, organic appearance? Like busting up a straight corner of a building or making them look in a need of some repair?

It's a good question. The actual building that this one is modelled on is still in good condition and would've been 'perfect' when built as are most of the Japanese building I do.

I suppose for most other buildings there are three main reasons, first is it's easier for me and the laser to produce square edged buildings, secondly it depends on the material (usually acrylic) and thirdly it's the architectural modeller in me  ;)

The Spanish buildings I made recently are all wonky as I made them completely from scratch.

The thing to remember is that most buildings for the periods I make are from that period and would be fairly newly built (that's my excuse anyway  ;) ).

Got my shinsengumi order through and am currently cleaning them up (not much cleaning to do to be honest) but I thought I'd do a little conversion of a leader figure, and here he is.

It's a Perry samurai head and a plastic Perry ACW pistol arm. Hopefully just different enough to look the part  :)

I'm going to be painting some of my own stuff this weekend and he will be part of that (along with the shinsengumi).

cheers

James

We're going to be playing a small Boshin game next week and I thought I'd get a possible couple of buildings finished for it.

I've had this one in a state of almost completeness for a while now so it's a good opportunity to finish it off. A very simple build and based on one in Hakodate.

Just the door, windows and ground work to do.

Got the building done. It look very European but many of the newer builds of the period were. For some of them it was jst the roof that would distinguish them from the 'originals'.

And here is a picture of the door before it got paitd to show that I do occasionally do things the traditional way  ;)

Yeah, it is (to ignorant me) European in appearance. When I casually glanced at the first post on it I actually read Hakodate as Harrogate .....  o_o  :)

Really nice James! I have seen that that board (fascia?) below the eave line in Pre-WWII Japanese architecture in the Pacific (nanyo). It seems sort of a signature. Do you have any insight/ words of wisdom that you can pass on about this for us working in this region?

Not much I'm afraid Lon. As far as I can gather it's purely decorational although there might be a connection with the eaves of early buildings extending quite a way over the walls for store buildings as Japan can have quite heavy rain in it's monsoon season.

That is bloody brilliant! What really makes it so, is the detail. I love the fact that you have captured the way grime accumulates around eaves and window frames.
