Title: My Pulp Terrain Projects **Pimping sampans added 28aug page 7** Pic Hvy
Post by: Braz on August 21, 2013, 11:26:06 AM
This thread is a catch-all for my various pulp terrain projects.

Inspired from Bob Murch's trading station, a trading station/jungle bar of my own.
Based on a 3mm(1/8th inch) piece of hardboard.

With the main posts glued in place. This will need more reinforcement later.

With the first walls in place as I lay down the floorboards.

And a view of the front deck.

More to come.

Interesting project. Could you elaborate on what method you used to make the square cut outs in the floor please and what tool\s you prefer to use to cut the wood panels.

@Prof Dinglebat

For the square holes used two methods. I used a steel rule and an Xacto (craft) knife. I use whichever blade has become slightly dull as doing this will quickly kill it. I score the cut lines several times with the Xacto and steel ruler.making sure the cuts are vertical. Then on a 45 degree angle I cut down towards the scored cut lines. This will remove a chunk of the material. Repeat the score cuts again, as well as the 45 degree cut eventually diging through the hardboard and finishing with a few straight cuts. This will wreck the hardboard on one side of the cut but the other side is straight and it is quick. I also used my drill for the holes in the middle as the square holes are 1/4inch across, so I used a 1/4 drill bit. I then cut away the curved corner sections using my craft knife to make a square hole.  Don't recall why I used both methods as either works well. For small cuts like the square holes I use my Xacto knife, for longer cuts the box cutter or Xacto.

Whenever possible I use my mitre saw. Electric, cuts the board like butter, nice straight cuts or a jigsaw for curves. This is how I cut out the 10x10 piece hardboard and IIRC the

It`s not always possible to use the mitre saw so for most other cuts I use a hobby saw (24 tooth IIRC) and a steel rule and cut down about a mm. This makes a channel that a craft blade/box cutter can fit into. I then cut the hardboard with a few passes of the craft blade/box cutter. Without the channel cut with the hobby saw, the hardboard gets pushed to the sides and makes ugly raised bumps of hardboard material on each side that needs to be sanded down. After the piece is cut, I clean up the cut with a blade, sandpaper and/or rasp as needed. This works fine for 3mm hardboard, less so for thicker hardboard. This is a good method as it makes a relatively clean cut and both sides of the cut hardboard can still be used. See here for photos : http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=55415.15

Hope that helps.

While not as ambitious as you, I built a similar building as mission house but it is quite versatile and could, with the right props, be used as a tavern or trading station in any tropical area.

@Hammers. Love the mission!! Hadn't thought of that. Now I have to have a Mission Option. Fortuitously and by coincidence I do have unarmed nuns in the mail. I recognize the Reaper Mother Superior but who makes the others?

They are from all over. A few are converted from Foundry Darkest Africa (Victorian ladies by Copplestone). Others are Shadowforge Gridiron nuns. There's a RAFM CoC nun in the lot and also a third columnist nun from Foundry.

Main floor planking and exterior walls done! Cutting all those planks is a chore. Thankfully had some shows to watch in the background. Usually I just scribe the floor planks on the hardboard using a nail. Hard to see but I added a floor hatch in the back left corner.

Cut the second floor out and built the stairs going up.

Any suggestions for a pulp era jungle trader/ bar keep figure?

Cheers and thanks

There are a half dozen I'd suggest from Copplestone's Back of Beyond range, check out the Adventurers packs.

From Artizan, "Remy" would be a good one, and maybe "Dr Glockenspiel" as well.

It is great to see this project coming together so nicely. Keep it up!  :D

@Prof Dinglebat. Been trying to do that but the miniatures don't weigh enough to get a convincing squeak. Will just have to treat it as a peril... not to mention the broken step and that loose shingle trap vs ninjas.
@Mason Thanks.  Steal away as that's why I'm posting. Looking forward to see your take on it.
@Dave Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, I vaguely remember Remy. Will look at those when I have proper access later.
@ Mad Mike. Très Jolie! Would be interested in those at the right scale. I would have another project in mind for those though. PM me to arrange something. En français si tu veux.

I blame Mad Lord Snapcase, Amalric, Hammers, Michi, Eric the Shed, in fact anyone, and you know who you are, who posted fantastic ship builds on this forum for distracting me successfully. Must avoid the Pikes, Muskets and Flouncy Shirts board as I hear they have lots of ships there too.

Broke down and prepped the templates for a whole bunch of pulpy ships as seen below.

Clockwise 3 Junks, 6 sampans, a sailboat, a patrol boat, a steam launch and two other general utility boats and at the bottom a small freighter. The freighter is in three parts (or will be) for storability/transportability and will lock together with magnets, slots and tabs. The middle deck section is optional to allow for a bigger or smaller boat as needed.

Gotta have a sub (this is pulp after all) so I started this one yesterday based on Type 2 Uboat. WELL...have one sub gotta have a bigger one too. So started the template work for another based on a type VII. Yes, what crazy stuff is he on is what I'm thinking too. Already have too much in progress. Expect only occasional updates only as they occur.

Might still take you up on the offer though.

@Hammers Realized it was the website photo as not up to your usual painting greatness ;)

Flittering between too many things.

Instead worked on the steam launch instead. Here is the base made from hardboard. The planks will be scribed it with a nail later on. The two sides were cut from thin plywood salvaged from a box of clementines and soaked 30 minutes in water to make them more flexible.

The wet plywood is gently bent and clamped in place to dry. See my lovely improvised clamping jig. The same jig setup will be used to glue the pieces using wood glue once the pieces are dry.

Here is the basic mockup, dry fitting the pieces. Only the side pieces are glued at this point.

A few weeks turns into a few months into all of winter.  :( It's all still packed in the garage somewhere in the stacks of boxes(cue end scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark). Spring is here though and it should be back inside shortly so expect some pics soon once the table is reassembled.

IIRC the docks, ground floor furnishings, and signs are mostly built.

Curses, you are right, my friend! It's going to be a busy year, colonial clubhouse/trading station, a secret rocket base and now a submarine pen. All it needs is a lottery win and I can give up work!  ;)

Very true, my friend, very true! I just don't have the discipline to finish one thing before starting another! Must try harder!

A few updates to come. Have been working on various projects, a little bit here, a little bit there, flitting between whatever I feel like working on at the moment, not concentrating on any one item as the mood hits. Each little advance not really worth posting about individually and suddenly a few months pass and you realize that there has been progress.
This is going to a pulp shipyard post.

Subs:
Primed only using gesso.
A larger sub. The conning tower comes off so it can be used elsewhere and for storage. Will eventually have an ice base showing it breaking through. Hull size is not accurate as it is game piece. Work has stopped as I can't find my chicken wire which I was going to use to make the back railing. :(

I use runny (regular) superglue along the exposed edges on the illustration board. This hardens and seals the edge which prevents fraying and allows me the lightly sand it if needed.

Also started some jungle savanna island type trees.

Some quick trees not representing any known species insired from here: http://infinitythegame.com/forum/index.php?/topic/23337-quick-trees/
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/41/2880-261019175827-419031421.jpeg)
Quick tutorial steps from left to right.
Glue wooden golf tees to hardboard base (with bevelled edges).   Some cut down to different heights before glueing.
Once dried in place, cover golf tee with hot glue for texture (right most tee on first base).
Cover with brown craft paint, dry brush a lighter tan colour, give a dark brown wash.
Drill holes with pin vice and stick branches in with superglue. Two rows of 3 stalks gives a nice lush top at least for these plastic branches.
Branches taken from cheap dollar store plants and cut into individual stalks.
Flock base (still need to do this as I haven't finalized choice for my game matt color)

Bamboo stands:
Cut out hardboard bases, glue together if want more height.
Cover with drywall/wood glue/sawdust mixture. dry completely overnight.
Bamboo ordered from China on EvilBay. Good prices. Cut to different lengths and use short cutoffs to represent new growth.
Drill holes in base, superglue bamboo stalks in place.
Flock base (still need to do this)
Will likely shoot it with some dullcoat too.

Idea of what it should look like

Post by: Braz on August 16, 2014, 10:35:58 AM
Thanks all. The sub pen is really quick to do

As requested:

Part 1 THE BASIC SAMPAN

Start with a base in the basic shape you want for your sampan. I use 3mm (1/8inch) hardboard. From a basic rectangle, I cut away using a box cutter(craft or stanley knife) and steel rule to get a more curved form
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/41/2880-261019181407-4191265.jpeg)

Using coffee stir sticks, cover the base. No need to trim the sticks to fit at this point. Just make sure the whole base is covered. I try to balance the layout and make sure each stick has enough surface area glued to the base so it sticks well. I use Aleene Tacky glue.
See; just covered, no trimming.
To dry, place under a heavy weight.
Once dry, trim the excess using your craft knife, making multiple light passes. This should be easy as stir sticks are quite thin and it follows grain of the wood. Use the hardboard base as a guide for cutting.
Tada! Might need a bit of fine trimming.

Next the side walls.
The easy option is if you have craft sticks that are wide enough and long enough. I do! These jumbo craft sticks are nice as they are thin like the coffee stir sticks. I suspect tongue depressors would be the same. They are wide enough too that you can make sides that are curved up at the ends if you wish. I didn't today.

Cut the jumbo stick down the middle length-wise, trim the ends at a slight angle so the shortest length at the bottom is the same length as the base, and gently (gently I say) curve the stick to mimic the curve of the base. The jumbo stick split in half is just the right height for the side walls ( let me know if there is a better nautical term than side walls).

But that would be too easy and not everyone has jumbo craft sticks on hand so I will use coffee stir sticks, lapped two rows high.
I run a bead of tacky glue down most of the bottom half except at the ends. At the ends I use a bit of superglue which will help hold the coffee stick until dry enough. This is optional, you can just use superglue or tacky glue too.

Use something to hold it in place until dry (clamps, elastics, holding it a few minutes, etc). I boobooed. :( I was rushed and did not let the tacky glue set long enough and left it without clamping. The sides came apart slightly just in the middle while the superglue held.
Retrofitted my mistake by jamming glue in the crack (I cleaned up the glue before it dried). Problem fixed.
Add the end piece of first row.

Add a second row of coffee sticks, I overlap where the joints are on a layer.

There is no definite template/plans so some mid construction adjustments might be needed.

When initially holding down the sides, glue is likely to ooze out (on both sides I forgot once- difficult to clean once dry so clean it up now)
Add the end pieces that are trimmed to fit. Cover the hole with a cross piece that is slightly tappered to fit. I added a whole raised standing area at the back to cover the ugly joint area but that could have been a single cross piece instead too. Whatever looks good to you. Add cross pieces as you wish.

Part 2 Pimping My Sampans

So we have some basic sampans - ho hum.  Not too exciting. On to it then - this is the part I like.

Let's add some shelters

Cut out two pieces of cardboard to size. Trim with scissors until get desired shape.
Glue them together in position. The laminated cardboard once dried will hold it's shape.

Cut out some covering material. This one is from a cheap kitchen place matt with an interesting woven texture - bought to make some jungle huts at some point. I digress.
And this one from a burlap sack originally used to hold rice.
Glue onto your cardboard shape.

Cabin shelter version

Make some wall panels from coffee stir sticks. Cut out two cardboard panels to size to make the roof.
Glue the panels in place and add some strapping pieces.
Glue the two roof cardboard pieces together and while still wet place on a convenient form so that it dries in that shape.
Cut and glue some coffee stir sticks to make the roof.
Once dry glue roof to side panels.

Adding a sail

Make a strengthened section on the deck where the mast will be. I doubled up the cross piece and added an extra piece to make a solid foundation. Once dried, drilled a hole the diameter of the dowel piece I will use for the mast.
Glue the mast spars in place. I've added a base made from cardboard strip wrapped around the mast and hardened with superglue that will help keep mast upright.
Here are the spars tack glued in place. This will not be strong enough. I will wrap wire to the joints and add more glue.
And some rigging.
Add pva glue to the spars, and place on some cloth. Let dry and trim with a sharp craft knife.

Deck gear and merchandise.

Every sampan needs to be covered with trade goods. Here I glue two craft blocks together (42 1/2" blocks for $1. Woot!) to make a crate pile - should have done this after I finished the crates. Anyways live and learn. The goods will be glued together in groups, stacks, and bundles for easy placement.  I also glued in a circle some extra kitchen place matt material to make a woven basket; wrapped it around a plastic pen as a form so the glue won't stick to it.
Scribed some planks into the cubes using a craft saw; a craft knife or even a ball point pen would work - the cubes are made from a soft wood. Then glue some strapping cut from coffee sticks to finish the crate but cardboard would probably be better.
Here I cut frames from cardboard instead for some crates. Add one to each visible side.
And a few simple open boxes made from coffee stir sticks. Once done you can add a thin cardboard bottom and fill with various items(Das modelling clay, sand, plastic beads, barley, rice, etc) to represent spices, fruits and veggies, fish etc.

Here I make some coils of rope keeping them flatish so figures can be places on them still. This is a bit messy but cover string in PVA. I then use tweezers for better control when coiling it, doing it on a piece of parchment paper so it won't stick to the work surface. Let dry.

Here is part of the merhandise before paint and gluing. Will also make pots and jars from some craft beads, rolled up carpets from fabric scraps, etc.  There are bags made from air-dry modelling clay and bags from folded over burlap also.

Ta-da!  Much nicer.  Oops, noticed I need to add strapping to outside of the curved shelters.

Very nice.

I really like that on the largest sampan, the one with the sail, it looks like you can still put figures right over all the cargo clutter on the decks, so it's both decorated and still usable, which is a hard thing to achieve!

First time i have read through this thread and there is some great stuff. Love the work on the boats. What is the final aim? One big table or lots of small different scenes?

Thanks all, glad people are enjoying.

@Wirelizard. Yes the clutter is designed so that figures can still stand on them.

@Gamer Mac The main aim is to have a waterside jungle outpost/trading station table with a nearby village and some ruins.  I do get sidetracked easily enough...oohhh shiney. The pieces will be usable for other scenes with just a few prop changes.  The sub pen/lair is generic and modular enough to use anywhere - sub pen, evil mastermind rocket base lair, the maintenance bay/garage for my space colony..again with just a few prop changes. And I have a good start on a middle eastern/persian  village/town roughed out but it's in a box at the moment as I'm trying to concentrate on this- maybe I'll take it out and snap a few pictures.

Looks fantastic! Between you and Turbo-Ben's sampans, you guys have convinced me to have a go at scratch-building some...
