First couple of pages lost picture to Photobucket fiasco, pictures restart at bottom of page three.
Not done anything for a while, but have been slowly collecting bits whilst waiting for painting enthusiasm to return.
A few more recruits for ZANLA

Rhodesian ACR plus some more troopies

looking forward to u getting paint on them :D
-
They look like a pretty cool start. :)
-
After seeing your painted Underfire Rhodesians,I ordered a bunch, beautiful castings, your new additions will go great with your others.Great job .
-
Lovely work so far
-
Happy dance! :D Ash is back with more Bush Wars goodness! lol
I am soooo looking forward to seeing you paint these up mate.
-
I'm looking forwards to this... :)
What are using for Cubans btw? They do look the part.
-
Nice !
What are the range of thi minis ?
Under fire for all ?
Thank you.
-
Cheers for all the replies chaps. Feels like ages since I broke out the brushes, but at least now I have something to get stuck into.
All the blokes are from Under Fire. I picked up a couple of packs of the ZANLA guerrillas, plus Selous Scouts pack 1.
I swapped a few heads & legs around, and made some green stuff webbing.
The ones I thought looked the part for Cubans were a couple of the Selous Scouts, one with a head swap for a Russian helmet and a couple from a ZANLA pack with another head swap.

Ok,
thank you.
It's a real nice stuff.
I'm very enjoy to see them painted.
Especially the cubains.

Great Job especially the Cubans.

Great work- inventive. :)

Thanks for the feedback. Not had much time to make a lot of progress, this is where I'm at with the Cuban/FAPLA blokes:
-
Looking good so far! :D
-
Keep em coming Ash,you need to have a russian advisor in a Gaz,driving away in haste from the cubans, great as always
-
Cool beans!
-
Sorry for the threadomancy, but are there any updates Ash?
-
There will be, real life played a hefty trump card on hobby time, but I do intend to get back to it, even got some new blokes from Elhiem to chuck into the mix.
-
I look forward to it! :D
-
These are the new blokes, from Elhiem.
Pack with RPD & PKM; A pack with AKs.
I think some will get the EO/32 batt treatment with some GS webbing, the rest will be generic guerrillas.

Made a start on the webbing, not quite finished yet.

I love your conversions, they look so natural. And the Elhiem figures look really good and mix well with the Underfire range. Another triumph! :D

Got hold of a little ZPU-1 kit from model-miniature (http://www.model-miniature.com/product.php?id_product=79), came with some nice little bits to make up a scenic base.

Every time I see this topic and your painting, I can't believe these are 20mm and not 28mm :-* Stunning work as usual!
-
Beautiful stuff as usual,it is good to see model miniature painted up,they are a little expensive ,but they have some nice stuff nobody else carries, again great job.
-
Nice looking gun and base.
It goes well with your other figures.
-
Thanks for all the kind comments guys, much appreciated. I've got a box full of the new Under Fire RAR to get stuck into, which I'll post in my Fire Force thread. Plus I got hold a 1/72 Hunter FGA9 to languish in my box of 'one day I'll get around to this'. Currently also contains an MI-8 and a DC3.
-
Came across Friendship models (http://eshop.friendshipmodels.org.uk/epages/BT3667.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/BT3667/Categories/Wee_Friends/Braille_scale_172nd__176th_scale/Figures) , interesting mix of bits. I picked up the modern British maintenance sets & the insurgents. Apparently some of these (possibly all) were sculpted by Tony Boustead, same chap who did the Under Fire Rhodesians etc etc. So they should blend in/make good conversion fodder. Also picked up a nice resin stowage/load to drop into a plastic truck kit I picked up from eBay. All this lot will hopefully end up looking somewhat SADF.

Start of some assault vests.
Started to have a go at a bunker, turning out to be rather large, the Mk2 will be about half the size.

Great find and bunker.
-
Got hold of some more little blokes to chop up; mixed bag of Zanla, RAR, RLI & militia from Under Fire, plus a pack of MACV SOG from Elhiem, mainly after the chap with the M79, but will have a go at converting the backpacks and already swapped out the CAR15 for an FN/R1.
Got enough bodies to get two chopper (Puma) loads of troops, plus a small recce team.

Nice work in this thread. Ever tempting me into 20mm Cold War wargaming.
-
Cheers Von lucky, glad you like it. I sort of finished with this: BTR-60PB
(https://image.ibb.co/dOjySk/BTR-60-PB-front-R-34-LR.jpg)
Think I might need to take a stiff brush to some of that pigment...
-
That has Africa written all over it.
-
Started to chuck paint at this lot:
FAPLA ('ish). Elhiem African Militia & Generic middle east
(https://i.ibb.co/dJt0fyz/PIP-FAPLA-LR.jpg)
32 Battalion with primer
(https://i.ibb.co/PZ5nPrY/PIP-32-primer-LR.jpg)
Base coat
(https://i.ibb.co/0KFn0KS/PIP-32-base-LR.jpg)]
-
Excellent! More good stuff. Excited to see the 32 Battalion all camo'd up! :D
-
I've started on the base coats, just trying to remember which colours I used on the first four:
I've dug the last three 'things with wheels' out; a BTR-152, a BM-21 and a Zil-131, from ICM. All will end up green'ish and looking a bit battered and muddy/dusty.
After a sometimes fiddly assembly I sprayed them with Halfords matt black primer, then a coat of Vallejo german cam black/brown followed with a coat of varnish. I picked up some MIG rust effects as part of a job lot on eBay so had a bit of an experiment session.
Enamel rust effect washed all over, with a bit of rust pigment sprinkled over it.
MIG rust pigment only, rubbed in with an old brush then sealed with pigment fixer.
-
On the truck I sprayed a layer of varnish over the rust, then tried a layer of hairspray, layer of acrylic bottle green, layer of hairspray, layer of olive green. Bit of wet scraping later got this
(https://i.ibb.co/Wzks7Fp/WIP-Truck-2-Cab-chipping-LR.jpg)
Back end. Didn't try any chipping, just left the rust. Painted the base coat for the wood and put a dark brown wash over the rusty metal bits.
-
That's a pretty great-looking technique you have there. Thanks for sharing it! :)
-
Thanks, bit of a mash up of info from Youtube vids etc
The BM-21 Grad; this one had no enamel rust, just the pigment. A layer of varnish, layer of hairspray, layer of sand colour acrylic spray, layer of hairspray, layer of Olive green acrylic spray.
Liberal application of warm water to soften the top layers (chucked the whole thing in the sink) then made some chips down to the rust. Let it all dry and harden up again then gave it a light sanding to show some of the sand colour. Think I prefer this to the other one.

Cheers Earther, I've pretty much finished all the stuff I had on the go for the 'Border War', back to little helicopters next.
Finished BM-21 for my little Angolan collection.

Really cool ! I really like your weathering technic :o
-
@ Sundayhero: Thanks, I had a go at trying different techniques for rust/chipping on each of the trucks and BTRs, but ultimately I ended up dusting on a liberal amount of MIG pigments and covering up a lot of it.
BTR-60PB:

-
Some great conversions there Ash! What an impressive force. And an inspiring project.
:D
-
Thanks very much. I'd been wanting to have a go at it for a while, just a case of finding suitable minis to chop up.
I'm not sure if I got the SWA battle vest quite right, as I couldn't find a single picture showing the sides. So not sure if there should have been pouches or water-bottles there, I went with a bit of a mixed bag of both even a couple with none. I've still got one more bloke to finish, who went AWOL whilst having his WIP picture taken, then at some stage I'll probably add a PUMA helo & maybe a Rattel or a Buffel if I can find a 1/72 kit.
Also got some more FAPLA on the way.
-
They are resin, but S&S do 3 pages of Ratel variants, the Oliphant tank, the Blesbok and a pair of Casspirs. The do a Rodesian Crocodile too. No Buffel that I am aware of though.

Ash check out The S and S, models album at ModernAfrican
Bushwars Yahoo group, they just received a Buffel mold from a man in Portugal, not sure when they will be ready. Great stuff as always.
-
cheers juergen, I just placed an order for some bits with Shaun; a couple of Unimogs, a jeep, a Ratel & an Olifant. Need to finish off some Alouettes first.

-
Outstanding figures.
Love the way you have painted them.
Your basing really adds to the look of the figures.

Cheers chaps.

SADF Buffels
(https://i.ibb.co/zbgTV7B/PIP-Buffels-LR.jpg)
If these look slightly battered and bent, it's because I dropped them all..!
-
Looks good as usual ! Interesting to see tanks in a bush wars settings too. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Africa saw big tank battles, during Bush Wars era, right ?
On my side, I hope to come back on my own Ultramar projects soon.
-
Some fairly hefty engagements in Angola (late 80's). A pretty good overview on Wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Cuito_Cuanavale.
An excellent book from a squadies POV is 'Battle on the Lomba' by David Mannall, well written and informative.
Rhodesian troops came up against Frelimo armour in Mozambique, on a few occasions, generally seen off by air support.
-
Also Mozambique w/ alittle Russian help was building up a convential attack force ,hence the sudden gift to Rhodesia of intercepted T-55's from South Africa, but conflict ended ,Mugabe took over Nkomo was left holding the preverbial bag.the Lomba book is a good read and Cuito Cuanavale, both big battles. And your Buffels are supposed to be beat up and battered,it's the bush, love the Oliphant.
-
Finally finished the Olifant:

you think you have trouble keeping up, I have as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
mighty fine work by ash on those vehicles, now we have only 3 to mould now, sometime soon?
-
I am absolutely inspired by this thread. The quality of the models is incredible and has just made me order a batch of 20mm from Grubby tanks to complete my Afghans. It seems 20mm is an option to the far more expensive 28mm after all!
Also on order is a copy of FoF Bush wars...Elhiem will be the next to order from I think.
Thank you for sharing such wonderful work.
-
@ juergen: You should start a 'work in progress' thread, put up some pics of your stash of kits, then everyone can nag/encourage you to build & paint! You know it makes sense...
@ Shaun: Ta very much. Just ordered a couple of Gaz 66 variants & another jeep (for a terrain piece). Is one of those heading for a mold the MAP 4.5 ?
@ CarlLeyland : Thanks very much for the feedback, I'm having a lot of fun with these. If you want great 20mm vehicles check out S&S models (http://sandsmodelsshop.com/shop/). As well as Elhiem, if you're after moderns then look at Under Fire miniatures (http://www.underfireminiatures.com/index.htm), great range of superbly sculpted minis. Particularly good range of African 'Bush Wars' figures.
-
I need to figure out my camera ,I got as a gift. I actually have a lot painted, just need to figure out the ....camera.
-
Thank you for the links. Without any doubt I will "have" to order from these companies. Can I ask if you have a blog or website? Your painting is the best - certainly in this scale - that I have ever seen for moderns. The brown colour of your tanks is very striking....can I ask how you achieve this effect?
I have a friend who was a medic in the South African army in the late 70s who has been amazed at the detail and accuracy of your work and he is usually very hard to impress!
Please keep posting.
-
Here is also a link to ModernAfricanBushwars Yahoo group,w/ many links-Albums and folders w/ much of Ash's fine work represented ,.and we are also on facebook. http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/ModernAfricanBushwars
-
Thanks Juergen these links will be really useful. I work with a South African chap who was a medic in the 70s I am sure that he will be fascinated as well.
Thanks again
-
@ juergen: Going not need to see pictures, or it didn't happen..!
@ CarlLeyland: Glad you like them. The Buffels & Olifant were sprayed with Humbrol 'Dark Earth' over black primer (Halfords), then washes of dark brown and drybrushed with Vallejo 'Khaki'. A little bit of chipping. Followed by a liberal marinade of MIG 'European dust' & 'African Earth' pigments.
I've also had a go at some Rhodesians: 20mm Rhodesians (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=53230.0) & 28mm Rhodesians (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=65877.0)
-
Thanks for the recipe Ash the vehicles are very very effective. Just about to order a copy of Bush Wars even though I don't play FoF..this thread is to blame!
Thanks for sharing, I joined the Yahoo group to see more. This is possibly addictive!
-
This is possibly addictive!
Tell me about it, I started by just looking for any minis with an FN to have a go at doing the 'Wild Geese'..! Still not done them
-
Just watched Blood Diamond...now working on a reading list for African conflicts, I think it was a pic of those Scorpian vehicles what tipped the balance....
-
If you're interested in modern african wars wargaming, you can also take a look on b'maso source book from Too fat lardies, plenty of infos, scenarios etc... Even if it's made for TFL games (wich I don't play), I bought the book still find it interesting, personaly.
-
Thanks Sunday, I have never heard of it but I will take a look.

32 Batt guys are superb, but I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing what you do with the SADF! :-*

The recoilless gun mounted on a jeep is amazing and looks just like the photo...the stuff you are producing is fantastic inspiration!

Amazing stuff ,the Jeep is Money!

Thanks guys, chopping the back end and the seat out of the jeep was a bugger of a job, still need to find some little elevator wheel for the RCL

Really nice painting, these look real!

Great work !
I've got the same typical south african tactical vest for my airsoft loadout ! lol

Great job Casting, they really look professional.

The castings look great. Very useful skill to have!

Cheers chaps. Slightly off at a tangent; Just finished this stick with the addition of the kneeling bloke, all converted from spare minis. Borneo British. .

Look great! Who are you going to use for the Indonesian rebels and are you goingto do Dutch?.
-
When it comes to bringing reality to mini life your painting and modelling has to be some of the best on LAF - simply fantastic.
-
@ juergen: These guys were just a bit of fun, I had enough heads with bush hats and the PATU stick (Under Fire) has a rather nice LMG...
@Gologotha: Thank you very much, considering the quality of work on LAF that's a huge compliament. I'm glad you like them, I've had a few comments about some of the conversions so I'm going to take some comparison shots of the minis I have multiples of.

Here's that oil drum emplacement. Jeep is just about finished, need to do lights etc:

Dug this out of the box of unmade kits, not looking forward to doing the tracks:

-
I hate tracks ,I once melted them together w/ a match.Good Luck.
-
For the tracks especially thin ones like the PT-76 would have try using a mini stapler with the smallest sized staples. These also staple flat unlike regular sized ones and when painted and a little dirt added disappear well and form a very secure bond.
That is if the kit has the soft rubber like track many kits now come with hard plastic track in pieces which is more work but looks better.
-
The staple idea is very clever ! I never thought about this for the few soft tracks kits I built in the past. Hopefully, now the brands make "easy kits" with hard, integrated tracks, at least for the most popular models.
-
This lovely little tank came with the track parts that go around the drive wheels in lots of little separate links. Made of a weird plastic that likes to snap on sight of a set of clippers, also liberally festooned with flash....
Anyway, got them on, thank you gap filling glue, will end up hiding under a suitably thick layers of mud. Also started a couple of T-54/5 another truck and a BTR-60PB.

Lock up your wallets guys. The next two sets of post '83 20mm SADF will be available for sale from Saturday. Got the 1st gen masters courtesy of UPS yesterday and will need a couple of days to get them ready for photographing, along with the new 28mm Bundeswehr and 20mm 'Peace in Galilee' Israelis.
I'll start a new thread when they're ready.

Before I started reading the Bush War threads on here (by chance) I knew nothing about them or the models available. Officially now my favourite thing to read about wargaming and the first thing I look for.
The models are probably the best I have ever seen! Well done and thanks for sharing, amazing work

Reinserting missing DIY paint shaker picture...
-
Yes, make a paint shaker is a very easy and usefull DIY project !
But you don't need a famous brand tool, just buy the cheapest one you can find. My own paint shaker is made with a cheap 10euros electric tool.
Concerning your figures, what can I say I didn't say already ? You're still in the top ranking concerning modern historical painting.
-
That picture is my jigsaw. (not that it gets much use as a jigsaw). Clamp was from an eBay seller. Hard part was grinding down the end of the clamp, to the same size/width as a blade, to fit the saw. Also added small ball bearings to each paint pot.
Cheers for the kind comment on the figures. Waiting for the new FAPLA from Under Fire to come out....
-
I've got the same tactical vest for airsoft games :D
Great painting on this unit !
Hah, when I played airsoft (some 10 years back) my first vest was a beat up old SAAV. I then bought an aftermarket one from the UK which was quite poor (but I wanted some camo instead of the ruddy brown and black). Brilliant layout really. The SAAV is an excellent workhorse of a combat rig.
-
@Ash :
Beware of ball bearings, they often ruin the vallejo/princeaugust/ak bottles tips, and cause clogging (I was using airsoft BB). Now I don't use anything, the paint shaker is powerfull enough ;)
You're right, the hardest part of the job is to modify the clamp. I doubled the security using a metal serflex.
@Elbows : I'm also using a woodland camo south african tactical vest ! Great all around airsoft gear. You can put a camelback inside or a spring shotgun, you have room for cellphone, food and car keys, and enough room for spare mags and bb's. You can also put your backup gun (even big desert eagles or g18c) on front pocket (like I did). It's very convinient for this sport/hobby.
Here's a pic a couple of years old. Now I'm wearing a 1st irak war desert pant, and on top using a mix of woodland and OD, it's the camo what is working the best in my local aera in my humble opinion. I'm often using the Steyr AUG rifle with a tactical magnified scope, again a really good fit for south west french forests, and a electric glock 18c, wich is a great and safe backup, no matter the distance and outdoor weather (I have about a dozen of rifle replicas, and half a dozen handgun replicas).
-
@sundayhero: Very nice, the price for the original SADF ones has skyrocketed over the last few years.
Update:
The ball bearing do sound like they are flying around inside, they were the Mk1 aid to paint shaking (before the jigsaw attachment). Pretty much every pot I have has one in there...
-
this is serious conversion work !
-
Can't wait to see the finished product.
-
little bit more done:
-
Cool !
Are the lights protectors made from copper wire, or brass ? They look great (better than the ones I made for my shermans)
-
It's just some brass wire, might redo them as have now found a picture that shows them a different shape!
Also will need to trim down the smoke dischargers a bit. Other than that to only build left is the wheels and tracks, which I'll add once I've chucked a bit of paint at it.
-
An impressive display of some little bit of scratchbuilding.
-
A hint of paint:

Hard to guess it's only 1/72! Weathering is really well done.

I agree - shit hot. Possible to get a group shot and your action/game photos?
-
Thanks for the comments guys.
@ Von Lucky: I've got a couple of other bits coming from S&S, once I get those done i'll post a group shot.
Painted this at the same time as the Olifant. An eBay find made out of resin (tracks, wheels, main body all one piece), scale is pretty much the same as previous 1/72 kits.

Cheers Jurgen, I've got one more T-55, a rather old ACE kit, that looks a bit grim so I'm thinking of something along these lines:

New project. SADF 44 Para Pathfinders.
Using the most excellent book Pathfinder Company: 44 Parachute Brigade - 'The Philistines' (https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/cka/Pathfinder-Company-Parachute-Brigade-Philistines-Military-History/1920143483/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1486586427&sr=8-1&keywords=pathfinders+philistines) by Graham Gillmore as a guide, I thought I'd have a go at putting together a small patrol.
Figures are mainly from Underfire, with others from S&S and WeeFriends. The Sabres are converted from models cast by Shaun at S&S from masters scratch built by António Nunes. I just chopped them up and added a few bits...

juergen: Just start with one, pick a photo of something cool and do a one off. I find if I get too much stuff sitting there taunting me, I tend to not know what to do first and end up doing nothing. It's almost as bad as running out of things to make!

Picked up a fairly cheap Mig 21 kit on eBay, added some dodgy paint and some rather nice Angolan decals

really nicely done...

Finally added an MI-8 to my little EO group:

Nice, but is he shy hiding in the back like that?
-
Here you go. It had been sitting in a box half done for a while; spray paint managed to get through the masking fluid which kind of wrecked the 'glass'.
Also used little magnets to attach the rotors.

Glass looks fine (well it suits). They really are elegant in their own way, aren't they (I only have one in 6mm)?

I wish my models came out of the box like that! :-*

Well, they were half done in the box. Unfortunately a lot of unfinished things end up in the 'box of apathy'...

great as always, I can't wait to continue my own work. Last year was tuff here.

great additions mate

Fantastic work mate! As I said over on TWF, I reckon they need some heavy weapons and maybe some wheels :D

Those are Great...I;m behind on my Bush war painting...great inspiration. Picture is of a 32 batt. 6 vicker Mg. Gun truck..probably on a Bedford...but not sure.

Good picture, I remember that truck mentioned in a couple of books. I'll see if I can find the reference.

That'd be enough to make me collect yet forces for another conflict. There better be a good figure of Hardy Krüger along with it. lol

Well... 20mm could do with some more love ;)

I can feel a Wild Geese range developing in my subconscious lol
Funnily enough that how this and my little Rhodesian army project started; looking for minis to do the 'Wild Geese' in 20mm. I did paint up a test piece of a WW2 Brit Para Vickers team in DPM & bought a Dakota, then went hunting for suitable minis with FN/SLR and found the RLI figures from UnderFire; sort of went off at a tangent and the Wild Geese got replaced with what feels like the entire Rhodesian army (coolest camo & wierdest looking vehicles ever).

Absolutely adore your work - these may be of interest to you... https://www.elhiem.co.uk/ourshop/prod_6956331-VOTE047-Rhodesian-light-Infantry-PHASE-1.html

Hello sorry to have noticed just now and be so late in quoting your very interesting post..as I’m revamping my 20mm Bush War armies and project I was also interested in giving heavy support to both my early South Africans and Rhodesians ..those Elands or Panhards are a good choice as they equipped both armies..I would like to follow your track and buy just two armoured cars ..do you suggest me the same you did..that s two machines armed with guns..instead of the mg or the mortar version? Both for the South Africans and the Rhodesian? No problem about the camouflage colour as I’ll use them as basic force for both the armies ..thanks

There is some scant info here about that very pict
http://www.saairforce.co.za/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2187&start=15&hilit=pathfinder
Anyway it probably refers to operation Savanah , Zulu Column, in 1975 (a B&W picture) not in 1987..from what i remember having read that special purpose truck , the only regular component of those early columns probing in Angola in support of UNITA, was manned by few SA paratroopers and with the few vintage weapons they had been given..the helmets is an evidence of their paratroop status as I think that nobody else used helmets in the field..
-
I think a couple of AML-90s / Elands would be a good choice, as you said, used by both the SADF & Rhodesian ACR.
For models the ACE 1/72 AML-90 is a good starting point, if you can find some (could do with the extra turret box, but fairly straight forward to scratch build) .
S&S models used to make a resin version of the 'Eland', and I believe it is being remolded, so hopefully it will have the correct turret.
http://www.model-miniature.com/ also do an AML-90, I think it's resin, so may not by 100% suitable for wargaming.
With regard to BMP1 & 2 in Angola, I'm not sure when they were supplied but I don't think they had BMP-2's until the 1990's. I did mine to go with a 20mm Executive Outcomes force (93-95)
Also had a go at some Bush Wars in 28mm inc some EO & fAPLA: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=65877.0
@ Golgotha: Thanks for the link.

Thanks for the suggestion Ash...in fact i'll opt for 3D printed Buttler Printed Models..they also do the very Eland Armoured Car
my query was above all about the version...from picts ecc..it seem that both South Africans and Rhodesians (even if the Rhodesian Armoured Corps saw little or no action) employed exclusivly the version equipped with the 90mm big gun...so as i ll field only a couple of models i want to be sure about what to choose and i prefer to ask to the experts ..two Eland 90 or one Eland 90 and one Eland 60 armed with MG?..any additional suggestions?
thanks in advance
-
The Rhodesian AML-60s were mainly used for Airfield defence, the Elands saw quite a lot of use; most Selous Scout cross border columns generally included a couple (painted Frelimo green) for extra firepower.
