Title: The Old West Painting Posse
Post by: Admiral Benbow on November 22, 2013, 06:13:01 PM
Howdy pardners, and welcome to the Old West Painting Posse, starting today!

Proudly in line with the Ancients board, Pulp and Medievals, this is the fourth board on LAF to stage this exciting painting challenge. The idea is to show just one miniature a day, freshly painted and of course from among the Old West themes. So we would like to see cowboys and Indians, mexican bandidos, legends of the west, mountain men and barroom ladies, the US Cavalry and wild desperados, town folk, railroad workers and lonely gunmen - well, I think you get the picture. If not, please just browse through the Old West topics here on this board.

Club membership is awarded to those who participate in the goal to paint 100 miniatures, all within the board theme. Every member of this forum is invited to post photos of his/her painted miniatures here. As soon as we'll surpass that one hundred limit, the posse accepts no more gang members.

Some simple rules for this:
•   As mentioned above, it’s about painting miniatures which cover the Old West era and theme.
•   You may post only one miniature base each day. We will accept multiple miniatures on bases showing coaches, wagons and so on.
•   Once entered, you don’t have to post every day. It’s perfectly sufficient to post just one single miniature at all in order to take part in the game and to become a member of the exquisite Old West Painting Posse.
•   This is not about showing your collection of already painted stuff, so please do post only newly painted miniatures. We’re not in a hurry, so take your time.
•  All scales allowed

That's it! Get painting!

 :)

And it begins.......*

Great stuff, chaps.
A wonderful start to proceedings.

Admiral: I simply HAVE to get that figure, as she would be perfect for Catastrophic Claire, a young lady that is part of my new Lawmen posse who is in possession of a shotgun and a whole range of afflictions of the mental kind.
Tough bint, though!

Nice pussy, too.....

That is a lovely bit of brushwork on a figure I have not seen before.

There's some great stuff appearing here.  Here's my first contribution…  Twenty minutes painting last night, just trying out one of the new Great Escape Games dead 'uns - seeing whether the detail was up to being 'dipped'. It seems pretty reasonable.

Yes, currently only available with existing packs orders for The Western Range, but will continue to be available with releases of more different types of western figures - things to come  ;), if requested will go out with FIW orders.

very tiny base though

The base is a 25mm washer which I tend to use on my Old West skirmish figures, be they on foot or mounted - it's just one of them things ...

I also really like your tree base in the background

The trees are some very fragile scratch built ones I made ages ago and which only appear on table occasionally as they usually fall apart  lol

When I saw the announcement for this I thought 'this should get me painting again' and it did, but due to general ineptitude I totally failed to take pics of my 2 new cowboys over the weekend. Gonna get them done and join in the fun before the end of the week. Loving what I've seen so far especially the GM Soldiers Free mini (great mini + great paintjob).

Ah yes, the green tails of his headscarf don't match the red of the front. But hey - it could be two halves of the Mexican flag tied round his brow  ;)

It's mixed bag, but I can recommend off the top of my head:

Cattle Baron & Boys 1 (he is from this set)
Buffalo Hunters 2
Russian Royal Hunting Party 1 & 2

The stagecoach set isn't half bad. Comes with 6 horses, two drivers, baggage. It's big.

Very nice figure and painting, and another rider at least! Didn't know the West Wind Cowboy Wars range had such nice miniatures, or is this an exception?

Is that the name of the cowboy or the horse?  lol

Great work everyone! Enjoying this thread, I pulled out my unfinished western stuff, I hope to get a few entries in. Wife's mom is in ICU and things are not looking good....so painting time for me may be shallow this month.

I must admit, I had started painting him months ago, but hurriedly finished the job and getting some pictures taken. I have a couple of other as yet unreleased characters which I started painting at about the same time - as to what the chances of me finishing painting them before we get to 100 are? To be honest, I'd say slight unless the rate of contributions drops considerably  :D

I've painted another 14 eligible figures since submitting my 'dead 'un'…  Happily for you lot, and unhappily for me, I am going to be without a camera until 22/12, so I'm unlikely to be able to contribute any more (so no chance of me lowering the standard still further!). I will continue to follow the thread though, and admire the 'eye-candy' - there are some really excellent examples, and several figures which have gone on my 'must buy' list on the strength of seeing them here.

This is one of only two Old West models that I still had in my possession, the other being already submitted for posse membership by another LAF member, so I decided to knock this one off instead.  The model itself is rather uninspired but that hat made me think of a vaquero, so I painted him up with some additional green and orange trim on the chaps and hat.

Great contributions to the Posse so far, gents.  I look forward to seeing who else y'all can rustle up! Yee haw!  :D

Hey Steve it's by Black Scorpion, and their tombstone range. They are a little on the large size (at 32 to top of head) And I'm mixing them with hasslefree/em4 some of which are quite short/thin. So I've based 'em on washers and removed their slottas. It helps scale them down a bit.

I enjoyed red dead redemption, and that figure was a spitting image of Rickets(sans coat).

Let me be  the  first (or is  it  second) person to say that I do not consider these pj:s to be among my proudest achievements. You know how some miniatures resist your paint brush. Well, these are of that kind. I got them because, well they are  *cancanières* for  chrissakes! I was blinded by that alluring concept but sculpts are not very good and  the  poses are rather uninspired. Well, at least there are six miniatures less in the lead pile.

The flesh looks amazing. What's your formula?

First of all: if the face is as beautifully sculpted by a master like Mike Owen, it's so much easier to paint. So praise to the sculptor!

My flesh formula is simple:

Game Color Parasite Brown
Game Color Dwarf Skin
Game Color Elf Skintone

It's essential to paint with much thinned down paint; I use a wet pallette. After finishing the face using the above paints, I used some very diluted red to tone the cheeks a bit instead of a dark wash for facial hair as usual. He is still a youngster, isn't he?

That comment was in reference to the Admiral's posting of Billy the Kid.
Anything I do would lower the bar after that!

There is a little story behind this one. This happened over a long span of time but here we go. The sculptor is a friend of mine from ReaperCon in Denton Texas. The artist who painted the cover artwork for the book "Hucksters & Hexes" is an old friend of mine as is the "model" he used for the original art. I pretty much had to paint this one.

Thanks!

I have to do something about the sheen in his left eye, though. I do the iris/pupilla part with a 0.1 permanent marker, and sometimes the ink stays a little shiny... like in this occation. Must dot in some black paint on top  :?

Ah, now I'm really glad you noticed. I kind of thought ahead as to which angles he would be best photographed from and put the light in accordingly. If I took the shot from the wrong angle he'd have two light streaks showing at once, which might look a bit odd!

Thanks! Twice.

I have seen at least season 1 of Deadwood (also going to paint the Schwaerengen form the same set), but don't recall Wild Bill... hmmm...

EDIT:
This wasn't meant to express any doubt that he was there, just that either my mind is clouded, or the character didn't appear until after they stopped sending Deadwood on Danish television - and that I should probably revisit the series.

Sorry if I caused any bad feelings, it was not intentional, and I only realized a couple of moments ago that the above comment could be interpreted negatively (funny how the mind works while one is painting).

Inspired by the OWPP I started to finish and paint a long neglected project from February this year, and just made it in time this morning:

No. 94 Dr. King Schultz

Foundry horse, figure sculpted over a Minden miniatures body with Copplestone head, wagon scratchbuilt.

Many years ago I met a taxidermist who was into the miniatures hobby, and he offered a couple of skulls and stuff for a painted miniature of mine. I instantly agreed ...!  :D
This tooth is from a small monkey skull.

Very lovely Blackfoot warrior, Roger Guy!

And Ned Dalton looks interesting, too, but the pic is a bit on the small side, Deedles.

Great work everybody, this show will end very soon, I guess.

Maybe for the next round if we just do 100 and not 200, we can limit it to one entry per?  It's not that this has not been great stuff, but I'd love to see even more variety from the membership!  Although I suspect the 'end of the year crush' has also played a role.

My figure was at that point bare metal too :) I didn't believe I would manage to paint it till someone else posts the number 100. But looks like I did. Now it's your all fault and Jimmy "The Anvil" closes the Old West round on LAF.

Nice finish, and that was some quick painting on your part to grab that last position.
Seeing that figure for the first time and you placing in a Western setting, I would be tempted to have a go at that figure with the breeches painting up as a cavalryman's breeches and have the figure represent one of John Waynes' hard drinking, quick fisted Irish sergeants. Pity the face doesn't look a bit more like Victor McLaglen, as he would make a fine First Sergeant Quincannon , in his prime

If you click 'quote' on page 1, you will see the text code for the smaller image instead of the image itself.

Copy that text, then paste it into your signature on your profile.

Word of warning though, it seems our signatures may only be 300 characters long, and mine is nearly maxed out.

Hey guys - here is how you post it to your profile ---- post it in your signature line just as you would a picture you're linking from another site.  Click on the small image, click on properties/info and copy the location line.

Place it between [img] and the [/ img] (without a space)

I'm quite new to this forum and have just looked through all these pics for the first time and I think the standard of painting and modelling is excellent.
I have also found all the pictures useful for sourcing some of the old west figure ranges.
If there is another painting posse I think I will have to get some practice in before I show my poor efforts.
Well done everyone
