Title: The PA Rules Reference Thread
Post by: Silent Invader on December 31, 2013, 03:11:34 AM
Welcome to the PA Rules Reference Thread.

This thread is a dedicated Rules Reference to which forum members may contribute short descriptions of Post-Apocalyptic rulesets: it is a ready reference by members for members of what is available to play.

At the bottom of this first post is an index (with page link) of the various rulesets that have been added, which I will keep up to date.

Members may post relevant clarification requests (i.e. “what goes where?”, not “what are you playing?”) and suggestions to amend the classification system, which will be considered then deleted.  If appropriate, clarifications and suggestions will be incorporated into FAQs. Non-applicable posts will be deleted without notice (if you are in doubt, start a thread in the board or pm me first).

All members are welcome to contribute and if you wish to do so, please also read and follow the 'additional notes for submitters' that follow.

Additional notes for submitters

This thread is for rulesets that are in published form, which can include on a website, as a PDF available for free or paid for download, or as a soft or hard cover.  As all included rulesets must be readily available, the thread will not list those that have a purposefully limited or restricted audience (e.g., personal/in-house adaptations, Beta rules with restricted distributions, etc.).

To keep the content brief but informative, each submission must follow a common outline format.

If you want to contribute, please reply to this thread, putting your post in the format that follows (including the category headings). You might also want to keep a copy of your submission (as stuff can get accidentally deleted: it happens :-\ ).

-Official Title: 7ombieTV
-Also known as: 7ZTV
-Publisher: Crooked Dice Game Design Studio
-Source: http://www.crooked-dice.co.uk/wp/rules/7ombietv/ (http://www.crooked-dice.co.uk/wp/rules/7ombietv/)

-Format: Soft Cover rulebook and expansions, all of which are availble as paid .pdf. Additionally elements from the hardback 7Tv rulebook (of which 7ZTv is a stand alone expansion) can be freely implemented into games with little hassle *.

*Beyond the zombies and the inclusion of a scavenging mechanic, there are few major gameplay mechanic changes from the base 7Tv game.

-Target scale: 28mm.

-Dice used: D6.

- Other Devices used: Games include the use of two decks of cards. One represent special events (such zombies falling to bits or Survivors breaking down in fear), and are issued before the game to either player for their use throughout the game. The other are Scavenger Cards, and are randomly issued to the Survivor player whenever one of their models searches for items (including things like First Aid kits, Car Keys, and Miniature Flamethrowers).

-Number of players: Games are aimed at two players, one represent the Survivors, and the other the Zombies. It is possible to play by yourself, though not ideal. It my experience however that should there be more than two players, that one player plays as the zombies, whilst the others play as survivors or one of the other factions.

-Board size: 4x4 is the suggestion, though smaller or larger board sizes may be suitable for different sized games or scenarios.

-Environment: No specific rules for different weather types or temperatures are planned. As such the setting has little effect on the game's rules.

-Terrain: B Movie Zombie Horror films are the inspiration for the background material. As a result games can be set in any location that players think suit the setting. Scenarios available in the rulebooks are typically set in urban or forest settings, though special rules for specific areas are available through the main 7Tv On Location expansion.

-Vehicle movement: Not in the base game, though the 7TV rulebook has a section dedicated to vehicles (including generating custom ones) from civilian bikes to tanks and mech suits.

-Zombies/infected: Yes, of varying types somewhat inspired by the video game Left 4 Dead. Infection of survivors occurs only upon death and is decided upon a random dice role. With the For Ghouls and Colleges expansion they become optional due to the inclusion of other survivor and monster factions.

-Monsters/mutants: Not within the main book, though Ghouls are available as a faction via expansion, as are vampires planned as a playable side too. Furthermore 7Tv's Summer Special expansion is the primary source for rules for various types of monsters, though the others include some too.

-Campaign element: No, but campaign rules can be adapted from the 7TV Summer Special expansion.

PA specific variant on the Songs of blades and heroes rules. A stand alone book.

MaDRG is a post apocalyptic game on the wacky end of things. The different kind of units include anthropomorphic animals and very active mutant plants.

-Target scale: multi scale, books gives ranges for 15mm and 20/28mm models. Smaller and larger could work.

-Number of players 2+ Rules suggest card based varying turn order for multiple players but nothing beyond that.

-Board size 60x60cm for 15mm games and 90x90cm for 20/28mm games

-dice used: 3d6 is all you need.

-Environment and terrain No specific environment named, but the scenarios make use of lakes and river, ruins, radioactive wastelands and even an orchard.

-Vehicle movement:
no

-Zombies/infected One of the units available to players are “the wretched” which are “ zombie-like humans mutated by a terrible disease that turns them into living plague carriers” the rules suggest using zombie models for them. They can however still use firearms and other complex devices. Their disease detriments organics but does not turn them into zombies. There are no zombie “hazards”

-Monsters/mutants A large portion of the rules cover mutated humans, animals and plants with a variety of randomly generated powers and weaknesses.

-Campaign element: The rules are written with the idea that players roll up a war-band with random assets and go trough a campaign with this band. A game can be played in as 30 minutes so like the book says, you could play a small campaign in a evening. The random nature of the rules could make appropriate models hard to source or prepare beforehand.
The Ganesha games website has a warband builder program that allows you to calculate the point cost of a model without random generation and run one of games like more conventional games.

PS, there has been an expansion in the works for ages, which should include rules for actual zombies

-PA specific
-Scale Any Scale
-Number Of Players Designed with solo play in mind but is good for 2+ player skirmishes. Also good to have a friend play as the randomly generated opponents in solo play.
-Board Size 3'x3' min board (my opinion) with no real max
-EnvironmentSuits any environment but no special rules as such
-TerrainSuits any terrain but no special rules as such. As with most skirmish games, the more terrain the better
-VehiclesExtensive vehicle rules
-Zombies/Infected No Zombies in rulebook but easy to stat them up yourself
-Monsters/Mutants Bestiary of mutated animals etc. and lists for Mutant gangs complete with extensive list of Mutations
-Campaign ElementExtremely campaign orientated.

Future Combat is the latest game in the Victory Decision line. A lot of talk about the game and some polls already happened on the ViDe WWII forum here on LAF. Initially it started under project name “Planetfall”, but after Spartan Games announced a game under that name, I decide to rename it in Future Combat.

Short description
I added a lot of new stuff to the WW II and Gear Krieg rules. Best thing most of these rules can also be used in any of the other books! For a more in depth look into what is new, feel free to read the Design Notes (excerpt from the book-> http://www.adpublishing.de/html/fuco_design_notes.html (http://www.adpublishing.de/html/fuco_design_notes.html)).

Victory Decision: Future Combat is a comprehensive game system to using SF Infantry units and Armoured Fighting Vehicles in Victory Decision.
Included are rules for Zombies and a Low Tech army lists that is well suited for PA gaming.

These rules cover almost all aspects of Science Fiction wargaming, from Troop Quality and Leadership to Air Strikes, Bunker Assaults, Combat in Buildings, Vehicle and VTOL combat.

Victory Decision: Future Combat features a unique Leadership-modified alternate unit activation system with an integrated Electronic Warfare aspect. The result is a fun and fast paced war game that involves both players constantly. The rules cover individually based infantry miniatures and also group- or multibased miniatures, aka Infantry Stands. While designed with 20-28 mm miniatures in mind the Victory Decision game system is flexible enough to handle any miniatures from 6 mm to 32 mm. So whatever your existing miniature collection consists of, you can start playing right away.
This rulebook not only provides 8 generic Scenarios but also point based Force lists that can be used to represent many classic SF settings. All necessary Game Markers are also included within this book.

As with our previous books you get a full colour version with many high quality pictures of fully painted models and a mostly B&W printer friendly version.

EDIT: Images removed for conformity

Official Title: After the Horsemen
Publisher: Two Hour Wargames
Format: PDF and/or soft cover
Source: http://www.twohourwargames.com/afterhorsemen.html
Setting is PA specific
Target scale: Works with any scale, best with 15/28mm
Dice Used: D6
Number of players: 1-4, solitaire suitability is high; you can also play more than four without adding too much extra down time. Players can play against each other coop vs. NPCs run by the game mechanics.
Board size: 2-foot square and up. Some games could be played on smaller boards
Environment: Not defined, but the terrain generator within the rules give dense woods as an option, so perhaps “temperate” environment.
Terrain: All terrains
Vehicle movement: Some, but somewhat abstract; player moves from encounter to encounter via vehicle, and can encounter enemies riding in vehicles, but there don’t seem to be any driving/vehicle movement rules. Upcoming Machinas rules will add vehicle combat as an option.
Zombies/infected: None*
Monsters/mutants: None*
Campaign element: Yes

*Zombies and mutants can easily be added using stats from Two Hour Wargames’ other PA ruleset, “All Things Zombie,” which shares the same mechanics.

Short description
In the 23rd century, the Earth verged on total collapse. Rapid climate shifts, caused by centuries of industrial pollution and nuclear waste, had brought the planet to the brink of an ecological meltdown. Countless reparative efforts had failed; each solution was too little and far too late. Left with no alternative, world leaders collaborated on a last-ditch effort to save humankind: the Exodus. It was a bold plan involving several waves of evacuations, with the end goal of colonizing new planets. The Exodus promised survival for everyone. It was an escape from a decaying planet.
It was hope.

It was a lie.

The brilliant, the rich, and the powerful gathered their families, their valuables, and their resources for the first wave. They left Earth in a flotilla of arks, scientific vessels, and seed ships. Within a few days, however, it became clear that there would be no second wave. Hope mutated into rage as the ill-fated masses realized they had been left behind to rot. Governments fell apart and economies crumbled; the world collapsed into anarchy.

As society collapsed, so too did the Earth itself. The oceans rose, natural disasters ravaged the coasts, and chemical rain scorched the arable land. Countless species vanished, either slaughtered outright or dying en masse, unable to adapt to the perilous new environment. As catastrophes crashed down one after another in a crescendo of failure, humanity itself came dangerously close to extinction.

Since the Exodus, uncounted generations have eked out a harrowing, threadbare existence with what little remained. Now a new world is emerging from the ashes. Every storm eventually passes; every desolate winter eventually melts into a fragile spring. Yet the scars of suffering and chaos remain. Recovery will be slow and painful. Few grand cities remain, and even fewer great leaders. There is no centralized structure. The powerful fight over the scraps of the old world, while the weak struggle just to make it through another day.

Welcome to The Resurgence.

Welcome to the Wreck Age.

Dead walk Again is a simple skirmish action miniatures game where a few characters
are placed against hordes of zombies. The game can be played in any way you like,
from a stealth game where characters try to sneak around, to mega large shootouts
between soldiers and hordes of zombies. It’s limits are your own and if the rules don’t
fit your vision, change them. These rules are designed to be played in a cooperative fashion, which means that the players will try to fight together against hordes of auto-generated zombies. They allow
for both solo games and multiplayer games with no limit to the number of players.

multi-player based. You can either be competing against fellow human survivors or fighting
as a single group against the undead horde. It is a turn based game, where two sides make alternative moves until the game ends. Each turn is divided into a small number of phases. Certain actions are only performed in certain phases of a turn.

Description
A tabletop game played with 28mm miniatures by one or more persons. The rules are not intended to be absolutely definitive but provide a general framework for the game which takes place in a ‘fast zombie’ environment similar to that found in the I Am Legend / 28 Days Later / Quarantine
sub-genre of zombie movies such that, technically speaking, the principal antagonists are ‘infected’ rather than ‘living dead’. Each player adopts the character(s) of individual(s) who thus far have avoided infection and their objective is to complete, and survive, a pre-determined mission, which might be to search for supplies or to search for vehicle keys, etc. The zombies do not require a dedicated player as their simplistic behaviour is determined by the game rules. For the survivors to be successful they need to support each other and balance searching quickly and widely against attracting the attention of zombies thereby drawing them into close contact.

Description
Nobody knows who pushed in the first one, who activated the Big Disaster, the end of a civilization. Some people say that nobody is responsible, that it is the machines which made this decision. Although it is there, it has been near a century since the heirs of this apocalypse tear what stays of the world.
The American continent is the first place on earth which seems to glimpse the birth of nations. Indeed, although always in disagreement on numerous points, the human beings and the mutants were divided certain territories. Except some confrontations, a fragile cease-fire lasts since a few years. The main reason of such an agreement is that the threat of the infected, called also "zombies", could not be controlled without the coordination of both races.
Although nobody wants to recognize it, the third nation is born, hidden in the dead lands: that of the machines. Hundreds of military and civil robots indeed migrated to this zone of North America, at first by small groups then by waves of individuals' tens eliminating all those who were on their road. This region infested with zombies is very too dangerous to send it a group of exploration to know what it takes place there, at least at the moment...
 The survivors

The surviving term, covers all the human beings whose DNA was not rather strongly altered to be considered as mutating and who wish to find one life close to that of their ancestors. Grouped in two states, him are not spared by the conflicts. They indeed share their lands with societies of cultistes and sometimes find themselves on the road of  nomads slave traders.

The Cultists

Cultists groups together around a common faith. There is numerous cult of which the size little to vary of a family unit in several hundred individuals. The biggest known cult is the one of Goldoh, The Big Golem. Named Goldoh is in fact a prototype of big Warrior robot of more than ten meters out of order from the earliest days of the Big Disaster.

The mutants

The first mutants were welcomed as a fate, then little by little families felt a certain shame to count these "anomalies" within them. Numerous mutant children were then given up in the desert. Being more resistant , most of these rejected survived and met in tribes. The nation mutants so began to be born. Mutants following generations showed themselves stronger still, this threat gave rise to a great war which came to an end only with the arrival of the infected on the West of the continent.

The slave traders

Been often afraid, rarely chased, the slave drivers think that only the law of the strongest deserves to be applied. They travel the New World in search of weaknesses to be submitted to the authority of those who have the power. Strangely, it is the mutants who reject categorically this practice.

The Robots

Shortly after the first bombs come down on the big cities of the World, the governments left drones and robots on all the fronts. It was a real massacre, servicemen or civilians, no distinction was made. While headquarters fell one after the other, more and more autonomous programs were transferred in his artificial fighters to assure the continuity of the missions. In these programs made hastily, were added computer viruses. Of this soup of bits, orders and of counter orders took out again nothing good for the whole humanity. Out of control, machines seemed to have their own purpose, for which the human beings were an obstacle. Today, they seem to get organized around an unknown entity in the heart of Dead Earth.

My Basic Modern Wargame rules

What's attached here are basically the quick-n-dirty rules that I used for my Zombietown Massacre game.   They're fast, bloody, not particularly detailed but loads of fun.    I just refreshed them a bit and am offering them here for your amusement.

I printed these double-sided and laminated them, then handed them to each player in the game.

Zombietown Game external link (lots of building models and how they were created) - http://www.skankgame.com/zombietown.html (http://www.skankgame.com/zombietown.html)

So if you're looking for fast-play rules and can't find something that does it for you, use mine.   Feel free to modify them as you need.
