This thread is for general discussion on the LPL8
All your rules questions should be posted here:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=63100
As usual we ask you all to be careful with your comments on the running entries. Keep your comments constructive. Feel free to tell us your opinion about entries, but DON'T post any comments with any sort of "quality comparison" of the pictures.
Some "no-go" examples:
- Entry A is great but I have to vote for entry B, this is so much better.
- Well entry A is so manifestly superior to entry B, that I cannot understand why so many people are voting for entry B.
- Entry A is running for the third time, so I give my vote to the Entry B, it's a newly painted one.
Any comments of this or similar sort will be deleted/censored without warning.
And now get painting. Good luck to everyone!

Hooray! A new LPL! Eye candy!
Too bad the LPL gets more and more restraining rules each year. Think it's a shame...personally I prefer the LPL's of years back where everybody uploaded whatever they wanted and comments weren't restricted in this manner. But that's my personal preference.

I think the current format is very much a result of collected attempts to make the LPL manageable to the show runners.

Having just run the PA painting club - which is a mere Sunday morning jog to the extreme marathon of the LPL - I can attest to how time consuming comp admin can be. Smaller comps can probably get away with fewer rules but as interest and participation grows there has to be some sort of constraint to help the admin keep all in order. :)

Yes it was very easy for everyone to send whatever they wanted but the consequence of this for the moderator was spending ten sundays in year for correcting/renaming/re-scaling-the-pics/trying-to-guess-who's-the-painter/answering-to-complaints etc. Though that's not the only point.
These rules are pretty much what I've had in mind starting the legue first time. Simple teams, simple pics. And this is the another point - we wanted a fair competition. If you look through the older entries, you would find many pictures with a lot of fancy and colourful decorations/frames/texts, huge close-ups and with less or very little of the teams. And this was just not right. In turn some painters stopped to participate just because of these exaggerations.
So I think this version of the rules gives you the opportunity to participate in a fair and balanced contest, it gives a great deal of support to the moderators of the LPL and it makes it for spectators to a show about figures and above all to a show about art of miniatures painting and terrain modeling, not about Photoshop skills.

When the announcement came, I really crossed my fingers and mumbled "No ancients, please no Ancients". That's what I get for crossing fingers lol
Thank you once again for the effort, Alex! I'd love to help in any way :)

Skander, I'm really sure, the love for the Ancients wargaming is slumbering in you since ages and also your Ancients team would be an eye candy! And now, where we have an Ancients round, I will have to participate as well :)
-
Another LPL, awesome! I can't wait to browse through all the eye-candy every week 8)
I can understand the need for a clear set of rules. Key to a comp like this is it being manageable in a decent amount of time by the admin. So strict rules for format, name and e-mail are all completely understandable and good in my book. Getting rid of al the digital add-ons I can understand as well. However, I hadn't expected further rules/a ban on a few added close-ups and different perspectives, as long as there is one central and large picture.
For me the LPL is all about 'getting together' with other painting enthusiasts to show each other our labours of love. Therefore I'd like the picture to resemble this as close as possible. If I look at someone else's painted miniatures in real life I take a general look and then go searching for all the neat details (freehands etc.) and small conversions that he/she made: the things that inspire and motivate. Vice versa, if I've painted new miniatures, these are the things that I'd like other people to notice as well as the general look. Not being able to see/use a few small close-ups and different perspectives for me unfortunately will change the experience of the LPL quite a lot actually...
-
I don't mind the changes, actually. I just have to figure out if I have the time to participate... lol
Regarding round 10... does it have to be historical WW1, or can it also be fantasy/weird renditions of said conflict?

Good photography skills and 'diorama' building skills will be more important now - it will become more of a 'Lead Photographers League' I think.
I'm mediocre to decent miniature painter and a rather bad photographer. Last LPL's I could compensate the last bit by inserting details shots.
To truely reduce it to a painting competition and not composition/terrrain building with painted figures as an extra, I think entries should all be shot before an identical gradient background (which could be provided by the organisers).
Anyhow - the organisers set the rules, it's their show after all. The plus side will be that I'll have reduced stress level this year.
-
I'm pretty new to the forum, but will definitely have a go at this, hopefully will have enough for all rounds. Looking forward to it. :)
As an arranger of painting challenges on another forum, I can appreciate the amount of work that goes on in the background. Well done guys, these things are a big time sink. For those muttering about the rules, one thing I learnt was that you can't please all of the folk all of the time. If you make changes to appease one viewpoint, somebody else will object. At the end of the day, it's painting toy soldiers, just enjoy it, as a spectator or participant. 8)
-
Hooray! The standard of the LPL is always high, and the entries are a joy to look at, so good luck to one and all - I look forward to the whole thing :)
-
Rules.
No bad-mouthing comments.
Quick and easy photos.
Sounds good to me.
Means if I enter, photography will be quicker. :)
As for scenery I love to see others but I don't have any so I don't worry. It's only a bit of fun. :) Let's not have a big...
...fight. lol
-
Those are brilliant Orctrader 8) 8) 8)
And a stunning example of (i) what to expect in LPL and (ii) what can be done with format proposed :D
I have very little time for painting and modelling, and am thus nowhere near the standards which are seen in LPL; and I am a rubbish photographer, unless I have an aeroplane stuck to my camera.
But I'll try to get in on this (i) for fun; (ii) to clear some of the lead, plastic, resin etc. mountain; (iii) to strongly contend for the last place and (iv) to get away from what amounts to a burn out at work - thus, for my health, and I wish I was kidding.
-
Thanks for the comments, guys, it's just like Nord said, it's impossible to please everyone. But we try to give our best all the time :)
Regarding round 10... does it have to be historical WW1, or can it also be fantasy/weird renditions of said conflict?
It has to be historical World War One.
-
orctrader = those are super nice; colors are crisp/clean, based in theme - you should have saved those so they could be entered.
-
Pretty sure they were in one of the previous lead painters leagues :)

Wonderful! I'm quite excited about this again this year. I'm happy with the somewhat simpler format and rules...they will make my photo editing a bit easier/faster....and since I'm always doing that at 3am on the night/morning they are do....that is an important factor for me... ;D
...now to figure out what to do for Round 10.... ???
Thanks to Prof and the Staff for putting this on yet again....the best painting League on the interwebs!
Cheers,
Blue
-
I've not taken part, in this before, I haven't even been on this forum for ages, but I'm quite excited about taking part. The rules seem fine to me, as some people have pointed out it's only a bit of fun.
-
The rules look totally fine by me, they should level the field again. Reducing figure amounts for rounds 5 and 10 in light of the new photo rules makes sense too.
Still not sure if I have time to do it ???
-
I think I may take the plunge this year.
I'd like the feedback, if nothing else.
-

Yes, they were, but it's always a joy to see them again! Thanks for this very good example of what the League is all about, Orctrader. And I like this year's ruleset.
:)

Don't forget, you have to defend the title, Matt :)

Of course! ;D

I’m in (well, hopefully). My current contract at the museum ends in mid-march. I’m likely to be unemployed by the time the LPL is running… which should give me plenty of time to paint and take pictures… ;D
-
I'm in (I think :D ).
cheers
James
-
Hopefully I'll have the time to take part again. I've got some unpainted figures for round 1, but nothing for the other bonus rounds, so I'll just forego the bonuses for those.
Now, where were those damn brushes......
-
orctrader = those are super nice; colors are crisp/clean, based in theme - you should have saved those so they could be entered.
Thanks. :)
As others have already pointed out, these were past entry.
Painting was "quick."
Bases were "simple"
Photography was "fast." (In the original entry, as rules permitted at the time, added "collage" and close-ups. This takes much longer. All that cutting/pasting digital fiddling about. ;D.)
-
Greetings,
aah so grat to be back .. some
an LPL.. again ... at last ;D
I like the rules, I've improved my photography, I would have liked getting paint on some WW1 minis
but as my exams are in the first may week, I will decline again entering the LPL this year.
BUT next year will be different >:( ;)
Anyway, good luck to the fabled fifties. I'm sure I will get buckets of eye-candy
Thank you
Jo

I hope to return to active participation of this forum, through this competition, problem is I do not think I have finished painting a single figure in the last year :o
So it looks to be time to break that painting drought.
The only round I will need to buy figures for is Round 10, so plenty of time to think about what to do, apart from that have loads of barely started projects to fill in the other rounds possible subject mater includes:
Glorantha (finishing of my Round 10 project from two years ago), near future street gang based on the novel "Vurt" by Jeff Noon, Modern Conflict, Back of Beyond, Mallifaux, Dien Bien Phu.
Oh, just to say I like the rule changes.
Heres hoping I can re-discover my love for this Hobby of ours..........
-
I hope to take part this time - I said the same thing last year, and the year before, but ill-health prevented me from following through on that both times. As for the rules - I'll echo what others have said - I like the cleaner, simpler rules format. Thanks to everybody involved for making it happen!
Oh, and Elysium64 - I loved Vurt. Great novel. Looking forward to seeing your work again (as well as that of all the famous LPLers!).
-
I can't wait! I'm also looking forward to broadening my horizons with Ancients and WW1. Thanks for the simplified rules, and for agreeing to run this party!
-
With a 6-week or so warning (thank you, thank you, thank you!), I'm in, as well. I took about 2 hours this afternoon to go through the lead pile and pull out what I think I'll be submitting. Is that anal or what? lol
I don't have anything for WW I either, I think. Some of the stuff I collected for another period might actually be WW I stuff. I'll check the uniforms.
Looking forward to painting some minis...I've been doing terrain for months now...

For the first time I think I already have figures for all the theme rounds. This could be an opportunity to plough through the Old West figures I have waiting in the wings, get my remaining gladiators done (round 5) that were undercoated for the Ancients club, finally do the Napoleonic unit I started years ago, do the support units for my WWII US Armoured Infantry, and use some figures I don't really need but don't want to get rid off! It would be good motivation as all my painting and photography will get are sympathy votes lol Will I actually get myself sorted out enough to enter? Probably not!
I'm assuming it's ok to start painting the first three teams now though? Otherwise there's no chance!

You must have the elephants memory Richard, that was a quite few seasons ago, time to move on ;)

I know exactly who beat me in every LPL match I lost. They are seared on my brain...
(Hammers bangs on about his bloody raggle-taggle gypsies every time I see or hear from him... At least you only mention Tarzan once a year... lol)

He beat you where? Over the head? In that case you are a bigger man than me if *that* did not make you bitter...

Okay.
I'm in.
God help me.

I should provide a miniature badge to wear in the message bar.

I have one :D
And Aircav as well :)

Not this year I am afraid :(
Too much real world to deal with!
Look forward to the stunning entries and good luck to all the competitors, i will look on with bated breath to see the amazing paintings that are produced this year.
-
I know exactly who beat me in every LPL match I lost. They are seared on my brain...
Only on your brain? I carve their names into granite slabs and carry them everywhere in penance...
I won't be adding anymore this year though, for perhaps the first time in my life* I am genuinely TOO BUSY to enter the LPL. Dark times, my friends, dark times.
*The other times I did not enter, I will admit, were largely down to laziness.
-
Really tempting but way too much going on in the real world but I'm looking forward to participating - but only in the voting!
-
After some thought,I have decided not to compete this year; life et cetera.
So all I can say is good luck everyone! I will enjoy the show :)

Finished my first team last night :D
It is difficult not to post them up though as they are for a continuing project :(

Same here! very hard to resist :)
-
Fortunately all of the bonus rounds are for projects I already have on going :D
The rest I can fill in with figures for the same projects and give them a much needed figure boost.
All I've been doing recently is terrain :? terrain is no good without figures ;D
cheers

Which means that you have to get your first three entries in at lpl@leadadventureforum.com until 12.00 GMT on Saturday 22nd March.
oh, dear ... read that, finally. I'm in. Or at least, I try to be.
*sigh* somehow I thought I've got more time until April. Now it's March.
Thanks for starting it again! At least, 10 weeks of fun are secured. :-*
best wishes
DK
-
I have started as well, have a plan for each round. Sort of. I'm sure it will change in the meanwhile.
By starting now, I have a slim chance of getting enough painting done with the lead time to get ten teams finished. Final semester of grad school might interfere, but not working while I plow through it will help.
It's madness. Madness! o_o ;D ;D ;D
-
Two of my first three teams are painted, based, and clear-coated. Team three (which is actually my Round 1 team) is, to quote Red Leader: "Almost there..."
-
After some thought,I have decided not to compete this year; life et cetera.

Me too, mate.
I had some delusions of entering but realised that I was never going to paint enough figures to enter a team every week.
Too much going on at the moment, but would have loved to as the themed rounds would have worked for me with a little effort.
Damn it!
-

Guy, it won't be the same without your moody, atmospheric creations...

That is a shame :(

I really like to take part in the LPL.
Though I think it´s very hard for me to paint 50 miniatures at least in that time.
Right now there is nothing more than four half finished Tetela Skirmishers with muskets on my painting desk.
As I want to make progress with my Darkest Africa project the themed rounds are more or less a distraction.
To be honest a welcome one :)
Maybe I will just take part and see how I can manage to get most of the rounds a finished new team.
Cheers

Oh yes, please, Alex, I'm sure you'll give us a great show! ;D
-
Maybe I will just take part and see how I can manage to get most of the rounds a finished new team.
That's the point, I also didn't manage it to paint 10 teams every time I have participated. So I have posted some older stuff without getting new team bonus. So I had the chance to make some new shiny photos of older things and hadn't to post the same again and again. We will see how it goes this time :)
-
March 22nd is only 18 days away! I've got a 'one-figure-a-day' plan until then... we'll see if it works out!
How's everyone else doing?
n
-
I've got three units done (though not the ones I intended and no fantasy team) but i dont think I'm going to have the time to see another 7 teams through (though another 3 are almost done).
-
...How's everyone else doing?
Slow. Very slow. Long days at work and I'm in the middle of a job change.
On the other hand, as I missed last season I'm doing my best to make it this year. :)
-
Scuppered.
My (for me) good progress with painting stuff in January has fizzled away as things got hectic - VERY hectic - at work, and it's not letting up at all, so I am almost certainly out :(
-
Two teams finished and round 3, 4 and 5 primed and ready to get some paint on them :D
I guess I'm in ;D
Cheers,
Za

Was thinking of doing some old talisman figures that I have on the pile - not exactly enemies but not one side either - would five figures from the game count as a team or are they too diverse?
-

My goal was to get 5 teams painted before the start. The fantasy entry is complete. Two more rounds were washed today, and should be flocked within a couple days. If I get 2 more teams done in time, I'll be ecstatic...I've been painting about half your plan rate, Joe.
So glad you decided to join!
Mike Demana
-
I've got everything based and primed and three teams about 75% complete...I'd love to get a fourth done before the fun really starts....but we'll see...real life is kicking my ass right now too.
Good luck all!

-
I have enough painted to get me through week 5. I just need to get some picture done. That has always been the part that holds me back.
-
Working hard on various teams, and slowly they seem to be taking shape.
Was thinking of doing some old talisman figures that I have on the pile - not exactly enemies but not one side either - would five figures from the game count as a team or are they too diverse?
It's up to your selection of Talisman figures. 5 Taisman play characters would be a lovely team but putting e.g. 2 Characters and some creatures to a team wouldn't work. Feel free to contact me via PM and we'll talk about possible options.
-
How's everyone else doing?
Apart from the final round (WWI) everything has been started - I paint about 8-10 models in a painting weekend (to what I consider decent 'gaming standard'), so i should easily be able to finish all teams in time.
This year I've decided not to bother with a 'diorama'-like phot but will snap pictures in front of a gradient background, which will save quite some time.
If I get in, I'll just have to buy some WWI models.
-
A renovation has thrown some spanners into the machinery, so I'm extremely slow at the moment. Hopefully I'll be able to paint up at least five teams for the 22nd of March (I'm a cheater, so three are already done ;) ).
-
My attempts at producing enough teams are slowly getting there. 2 complete, 2 almost ready but not happy with the fantasy team. Not my genre and I am having difficulty applying myself to finishing them. I might just have to forgo the bonus points for Round One if they don't meet the standard. :?
I have enough painted to get me through week 5. I just need to get some picture done. That has always been the part that holds me back.
Likewise my lack of photography skills means that my finished product is not coming out as well as I had hoped. Still trying to get the figures in focus and properly lit. :-[
Still determined to enter no matter what the end product looks like. I can always get better as the weeks progress (at least that is what I tell myself to keep my spirits up). :D :D
-
Thanks Prof
Looking at just Talisman character pieces I've had for a while - excuse to get some finished I've had them a long time
Now to decide which ones :)
-
Just got a new box of minis in the post today (might be yesterday now) so I'm feeling all minilicious. And keen to actually get something painted after a long (long, long, long) dry spell. So I'm going to say 'I'm in', though with only a few days to go an many distractions between now and then, I probably won't get far.
But I might get some minis painted and that's the point.
-
Fantastic guys, fantastic! It's great to hear everyone's progress and realize that as a collective of painters we all face pretty much the same issue :) I am excited to see what everyone puts together!
As for me, I started with the WWI project... I realize now that might not have been the best idea, but it's *almost* done and it's a fun new genre that I hadn't worked on before, so hey... Just some finishing touches on the figures and then to polish off the "big thing". Not sure if my "big thing" will even qualify to fit that category, but since I'm committed I won't bother to ask because I probably won't change the project either way! Exciting though!
And good luck all! Should be fun :)

-
Round 3 team done, round 2 team almost done but bases only just ordered (my flgs has stopped stocking them :-[), round 1 team primed. Looking at the 11 days left, I will have a maximum of 4 evenings to get them all finished and photographed :o
-
Still not sure if I'll get enough done to enter but struggling with Round 1. I've got a load of fantasy stuff but it's all in the 'for sale' pile except my chaos stuff. I did also find a pile of 1980s GW wizards and townsfolk though. It might not quite be in the spirit of the classic fantasy theme though?
-

Why not? Wizards and townsvolk would be a proper choice. We only were intending to avoid such stuff as so-called "modern Fantasy". Wizards are classics enough.
Anything that is demonstrably "classic fantasy", including, but not limited to, the Hyborian Age, Dungeons and Dragons, Tolkien, Warhammer etc. This explicitly EXCLUDES "fantasy" themes set in the modern world, e.g. Harry Potter or Twilight.

Cheers Professor! I just wasn't sure a beggar, a woman sweeping up and a woman plucking a chicken would be ok lol

Hey Guys..
So I am on the fence this year for LPL season 8, time is not my friend this year. Trying to paint stuff for two conventions that fall right in the middle of the schedule, and dont have any crossover with the bonus rounds. Round 10 really has me stymied as I dont collect WWI stuff , as a guy that swimming in lead already I am hesitant to get into more stuff just for the sake of painting it when I have so much already.
I'm looking for an excuse thou, ;) so If you have any recommendation on WWI figures and a vehicle that might have cross use in say WW2, as vintage leftovers still in use? Or , something that might have a futuristic look for say Victorian era gaming ? ( Empire of the Dead) That might give me the push I need. At this point thou I havent really found anything as I dont know alot about miniatures in the genre. Any advice would be appreciated!
-
The bonus rounds aren't compulsory - you don't have to paint to the bonus round themes, unless you are competitively chasing down every available bonus point :)
-
I've selected ten teams that I'm supposed to be painting. they're standing all on my table, staring at me. "watcha wait'n for, then?" they seem to say! lol
-
finally something modelling my wife approves of :) She see's the lead pile dropping a bit over the next month or so
-
Cant wait to see your respective entries!
-
I just finished my WWI entry!!!! Along with the 'big thing'. Now all that is left for that one is to compose the images. I know, I know, I picked the wrong theme to start with :)
I also just finished my Fantasy entry as well... but my plan is to paint a second fantasy entry and decide at the last minute which one to use for the first round...
Good times! Looking forward to seeing everyone's stuff when things kick off!

Same here
-
And they're off......
Entry sent for the first 3 rounds :) Finished painting the last miniatures at 16:30. Good luck everyone.
-
Some extra work has probably put paid to the LPL for me this year. I can't turn down the cash and it's writing about pillboxes (how can I refuse?)! As I've only painted stuff I need so far I have none of the themes and still three teams to finish. On the plus side it's pushed on the painting queue, which is what it was about for me anyway!
-
First 3 entries sent. I can't wait to see every bodies entries.
-
Posted mine, just. Twas a hassle. as per always, to get done in time since I am away from home for a week. Bad consciousness plagues me as the LPL tends to mean a certain distancing from family for a few weeks. Although I must say that Fivers and CanO'Beer, the young Hammers, have great faith in my first entry, which is encouraging.
-
As long as it's not another bloody gypsy encampment, we'll be okay ;)
-
Looking forward to another fun season! Yay!

As long as it's not another bloody gypsy encampment, we'll be okay ;)
Now there's an idea for round 4...
-
I'm close to ready with my first three....
...can we get a running tally as people submit? It will be interesting to see how quickly people get the first three in...
Cheers,
Blue
-
I have four rounds worth finished, none photographed yet. The plan is to do it Wednesday night, but we'll see...! A fifth entry is started, but still has a good couple days of painting to go...
That time after the announcement and before the first round sure did fly, didn't it?

Now to catch up
-
Well then nope.shame, but i just don't have the time.

Thanks Prof! I'm trying to replace my team 3 with another but if the slots get filled quickly I may need to just go for it as is.

Quite a fearsome lineup. Some of the right hardhitting sluggers of LPL in there... I shall have nightmares.

What a list, this is set to be a good one, with veterans and new comers of sizable repute :D I think I will keep my 3" brush for glossing the woddwork in the spare bedroom ;) :D
Its always a good thing voting, I really enjoy it each week, even got my girlfriend interested in it :D
Good luck everyone

What?! Who do we have email to file a complaint? You can't buy a better pre-release advertisement than a team in the LPL. :)

Looking forward to your entries! Mine won't be in at all due to the bloody real life thingy that I so often try to avoid :(

Agreed. I was hoping to see the Admiral's teams. And I need Bugsda to be "in" as, apart from him being a great painter, if I'm the only "sorry, no scenery" chap it will be lonely. ;)

Well, I'll keep you company then. I won't bother with scenery (with a possbile exception for the last round). Blue gradient background it shall be.

I'm trying Malcolm but it's going to be a close run thing, If I don't make it I'll be on the sidelines with the weezy boys and the half time oranges :D

If I enter this year I'm doing blue gradient background as well. It's pretty clear that some vocal or influential LAF members want the 'playing field leveled' for whatever reason- as evidenced by the new rules. There's also been some commentary that the LPL is a 'photo contest'. The fact is that anyone showing their figures in a contest online needs to know how to take a crisp clear photo. Anyone that has an tripod, lightbox, etc, and any training at all is at a distinct advantage no matter what sort of scenic backdrop or knowledge of Photoshop one has. No way around that. Some have also said that having terrain is an advantage (I won't argue with that to be honest as think it tipped the scales in my favor more than once) but really the big advantage some people have is time. A great majority of the thematic terrain I used in the past was made during the LPL as I worked on the figures, it wasn't like I had it beforehand.
It may not seem like it but I don't have much of a competitive streak and I love doing the LPL because it forces me to get stuff done, and I like the self-challenge of knocking out new terrain at the same time. I think the LPL is getting more homogenized and is turning into a genuine 'competition'- but if that's the way it is, then that's the way it is. The only thing I had a problem with in the past is the Photoshopping of bases into the environment, which I think is misdirection and modification/obfuscation of reality.
Next year, when everyone is required to take a blurry photo of their figures on a cluttered kitchen table, with the camera in their phone so that the playing field is truly level, I'll still participate because I love the marathon :)
-
Having tried terrain and nice backdrops this year and had the photo's rejected, I'm now using the plain blue background that came with my light tent.

It is pretty obvious the LPL has favored a combination of creativity, scenery, painting and photo skills. All season winners have been people who knows how to show their miniatures. What does this mean? With the risk of stating the obvious, it is what the voting members like, encourage and want more of. Myself, I am using a piece of shit camera this year and hope fI can do something with the other three. :)
-
I'd rather see creativity than crisp paint jobs to be honest. Sure, some might argue that it's unfair that some people get more votes just because they decided to spend an extra 50 hours on an entry. Oh wait...
-
I'll be joining the blue background crowd as well. Actually, the new rules do make composing the entries quicker and make it much less likely that I'll misspell some key words again. I also like only lining up a single shot per entry.
Ok, photos this year will be interesting. I broke out my nice camera after a photography break and found moisture in my lens, so that's out. The point and click is taking some horrible pictures so the best option I have thus far is... the cell phone camera. :? Truth be told it is getting some pretty decent shots.
I'm fine with the new rules as they are.
-
Having tried terrain and nice backdrops this year and had the photo's rejected
...what?

Matt, terrain is not forbidden, feel free to use it in your entries.
Having tried terrain and nice backdrops this year and had the photo's rejected, I'm now using the plain blue background that came with my light tent.
Paul, you know, your entries were rejected because your backdrops were printed images. And I have mentioned in my reply to you that you are allowed to use terrain.
-

Uh oh, I didn't realize the non-printed images requirement when I read the background section of the rules... Time to pull out the camera again!
Thanks
n
-
Uh oh, I didn't realize the non-printed images requirement when I read the background section of the rules...
This is the rule again, pretty clear, I think.
6. Photography Backgrounds
Your photo backdrop may be a single colour, a gradient, or a scenery setting including terrain pieces. Note that the backdrop must be in the photo from the start (i.e. you must photograph the figures in front of it), you may not add it digitally at a later point.
-
Tonight is photo night for the first four rounds. I have never used printed scenes for backdrop, but was thinking about it for a winter scene (our winter has been so awful this year, I felt compelled). Glad I read that....! In the long run, I probably wouldn't have gotten around to printing out an image, anyway. Now, I have an excuse for my laziness...! ;D lol
My round 5 entry is prowling around on my desk top now...back, you! :o Vicious little buggers...they want to be done before the deadline to beat the "5 rounds done before March 21" goal...!
Mike Demana
-
And, rather importantly, thus far, Admiral Benbow!
Well folks (and you know who you are ...), where have you all been last year when only the bravest stood their ground and competed in LPL7? Lame excuses all over all ... 8)
Now it's my time to settle back and enjoy the products of your hard work!
:D
-
This is the rule again, pretty clear, I think.
Thanks for the response Prof., I didn't mean to complain! You are right, it's absolutely clear. But still, I was glad to see that post otherwise I would have entered at the last minute only to find out that my pictures didn't qualify! :)
Thanks again,
n

Guilty as charged. :? My head hangs in shame... ;)
-
Prof, I confess that I was a bit surprised that painted backdrops would be disallowed as well. But I respect the rule. I am only mentioning it so that my fellow participants don't spend any time painting a custom backdrop.
Bill
-
Hmmm, i'm not sure printed and painted backgrounds are equivalent... But I'm sure Prof will weigh in if he feels the need to... :)
Back on my head (at the painting table, at least...)
- pacarat
-
I wouldn't have thought so. But my painted (not printed) backdrop was disallowed. Fair warning, chaps.
-
Well, I'll keep you company then. I won't bother with scenery (with a possbile exception for the last round). Blue gradient background it shall be.
I'm going to be all over the place in staging entries. Of my first three team pics, I have one with none, one with some and one with alot of terrain/scenery... :?
Perusing the LPL archives i've been very impressed with the creativity and splendor of many of the entries. In many cases it seems that "set design" has taken priority over the figs themselves.
So, I've been going back and forth for a while now, on how or whether to stage my teams. Alot will depend on genre, what I have on hand, and available time.
I'm also doing both 28mm and 15mm scales - in the smaller scale I'm finding it very difficult to inlude any significant scenery, while still being close enough in to see any detail. In other test shots the scenery seems to detract from the figs...
So, i'm probably hosed either way... :D
- pacarat
-
Just submitted. I look forward to being a small speed bump in other's paths to greatness! :D
-
Hmmm, i'm not sure printed and painted backgrounds are equivalent... But I'm sure Prof will weigh in if he feels the need to... :)
It doesn't matter printed or painted, according to the rules there is no place for both:
Your photo backdrop may be a single colour, a gradient, or a scenery setting including terrain pieces.

sorry to beat a dead horse but do I need to retake my entry photos as written it does not say a printed background is against the rules the way I read it was that a scenery setting is one of the options im not complaining and maybe I misunderstood but my round two entry has a magazine picture behind the minis do I need to submit a new one
-
I did check your entry again. I see only a tree and some plain background. The pic is a bit dark though. The best would be you contact me via email again.
-
I am really pleased that this year it is possible for me to participate in the competition. Every year I am very busy until the end of February preparing the TACTICA convention. This leaves just three weeks to prepare myself to the LPL. Luckily I have been able to complete my first three pictures.
But now I look forward to your great contributions and hope to see many inspiring things. :-*

Yes! Welcome back Frank...your entries are always a pleasure to behold.
Great...I'll submit tonight and it looks like there is still space for me on the roster. I'm gone for a long weekend...but hope to follow the action on Sunday remotely. Then back home to dive into teams 4 and 5.
Cheers,
Blue

Just had to check all my entry photos for the backgrounds
Missed the rule about the background and did ALL my entry photos with one but to get under the 500kb the photos were cut down and it wasn't visible anymore.
I was lucky :D

I look forward to being a small speed bump in other's paths to greatness! :D
It isn't so bad...the life of a speed bump in LPL. Just competing with greats like Frank (welcome back!) is an honor!

Well 3 rounds in just hope the pictures pass muster as I had to reduce the size and not sure if it worked >:(
-
I have rounds 4 and 6 just about finished and ready for photos. Round 7 is coming along nicely, too.
It would be nice if my Round 5 figures were to arrive. Surprisingly, I have NO ancients. Oldest stuff I have is Pike and Shotte.
Oh! Would sword armed Bedouin camelry count? Sure, I got them for colonials, but really, did they change that much from the ancients?
-
First time for me, just submitted my first three rounds. Got the bulk of a further round painted and a few odd figures here and there that I will hopefully finish off. Some of my later rounds still to be collected by a friend from Salute!

I'm in same boat for round 10. Dont game WWI at all. Looking at doing some Arab revolt figs a la El Aurens. Can then use them for pulp. Have some foundry figs, but also considering the line from Artizan. They are very nice.
Best to send a pm to Prof re your question... Probably depends on look of figs , any "modern" accessories, etc. With the limit being far side of dark ages, IMO bedouin are probably a stretch...

Too funny...
I've been considering what to about The Big Thing.
May have to hit the ToysRUs soon... I missed going to a local model train show earlier this month... Would have had my choice of Big Things there... :)

Darrell, short version - you need 15 newly painted or previously unpublished figures to be qualified for the League. The League is going to start coming Sunday. Here are the rules (longer version) you would need to read them:

I actually managed to join in, ha!

We'll, I think I probably missed the deadline as it was 11.59 when I sent the last entry so they probably haven't even been received yet! As painting time is so limited I've only concentrated on figures I need.
Professor, if I have broken any rules in my disorganised haste I apologise! I've no problem being disqualified, it saves me the stress (and the crushing defeats that would surely follow).
Cheers!

Missing some people I always look forward to seeing :(
None the less, I'm anticipating seeing some great stuff!
I thought I read once that Broonkah has been in all the LPLs? Am I right on that, and is there anyone else that has been in all of them? I think after this year I'll have been in 50% :)

Last year I told myself that I'd work all year and have teams ready in advance. And here I am...with 7 unpainted sets staring at me.
Good luck, guys! I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's work!
Bill

No Chambers?
Wow, the return of Zoogla :o welcome back :)
And I beleive the same for you and The Prof, but only for one or two years?

If that's true an he makes it to number ten he'll derserve special bonus points!

Phew the last post I didn't see your name either.
It was close! It's too early in the LPL to be staying up late...
-
No Chambers?
:o :o :o
:'(

PS is this tomorrow?
-
I will not be joining this year. I got myself into a large painting contract and with work and family, well there are only so many hours in a day. I will be filling my painting hours with ORKS...that's right I said ORKS. 10 Weeks would put me in a time crunch with the majority of the commission to be completed by September. I look forward to watching the competition, voting and commenting over the next couple of months.
I will be back next year (Dr Mathias...yeah I looking at you lol)!
Good luck all!
Patrick Chambers

Sadly, I have not been lucky enough to be in all of the LPLs. I started with LPL 4. I firmly occupy one of the speed bump positions, but I enjoy it every year.
I don't post on here often, but lurk and marvel at all of the amazing projects I see here.
Best wishes to all entrants.
-
Good luck everyone :) Whilst I'm not competing this year I am still participating in my own small way ;)
Kind regards
Guy
-
Wow, the return of Zoogla :o welcome back :)
But no Bugsda :'(
12:06 and I still had to take photo's, so I said fuck it and went to the pub with my new brother in law. :D
I'll be cheering on my favourites, they're pretty much all here 8), and sucking up the inspiration from the sidelines.
-
Well I to missed it despite looking forward to it for a year, painting like a fiend for the last 40 days, having all 3 teams set to go! Then I spend 72 hours shooting nights on a movie this week and I miss calculated the time difference! I get up dead tired and halfway through picture taking realize "I'm twelve hours off!" >:( ohh well it did get me to get a lot of minis done and now with the pressure off I can concentrate on enjoying everyone's hard work and just post my stuff elsewhere on the LAF forum lol
Good luck all, Gentlemen start your paint brushes!

PS I was hard pressed to take a good photo with the constraints of 800 x 800 pixels and a 500k file size limit.... I'm a fair photographer... was I missing something? Just fitting 5 minis in and keeping a level of detail seemed impossible. My pictures were in my opinion very small and lacking in detail. ???
I be posting some of my entries tomorrow in other areas. :P
-
Thanks, I'll do just that and let you know via PM?
Darrell.
Sadly I was at a show yesterday and didn't realise that the deadline was yesterday at noon o_o o_o o_o.
I did read the rules a day or so ago..... know...... bugger! o_o
I guess I'll wait until the next one :).
Darrell.

I picked the camera up yesterday morning only to find that there were no batteries so it all had to done on my phone. Apologies for the quality in advance!
I was assisted by my small toddler who insisted on driving his cars over the terrain set up!
Good luck to all and enjoy the free points for whomever gets me! lol
-
It seems you didn't get my pictures, will you allow me to send them again? Or am I too late now? Emailed more details..
-
Lads, I could allow your entries as I understand you did a lot of work. But now we have 38 players and we need an even number of participants otherwise we wouldn't be able to have matches for everyone. LordOdo, my suggestion is just try to contact VonKluge and/or Bugsda. I could take your entry if you would find an opponent for you. Get one of them to enter his teams and you can play in that season, too.
But please understand that I can't wait too long. I still need a few hours to prepare everything for the start but I can't wait till tomorrow. We had almost the entire week for the sending of entries and a lot of people did it timely and I wouldn't like to let them to wait too long.

I appear to be falling back into my habit of years gone past of doing every other LPL (3, 5 & 7 for me so far...) and missing the even-numbered ones!
Best of luck to all the entries and I look forward to seeing the rounds and matchups this time.

Okay, Bugsda and LordOdo are in and we are going to start the LPL8 with 40 participants. Let's play fair and square. Good luck to everyone!

No sweat, totally understand. I'll get my proverbial behind over to the voting section now, there at least, I can do some good :D.

This is one of my favorite hobby-related events and yet another reason I enjoy this site. Simply excellent.

Ahhhh....pleasant time whiled away admiring everyone's entries. Great to see new and old names. Some seriously good stuff, with some knock-down, drag them out tough voting choices!
Thanks for all your hard work, Prof! You provide lots of folks with enjoyment with what you do....

I'm looking forward to going through them all tonight once small people are asleep!

Agreed - each year, I do the voting together with my wife :)
-
Voting done for round 1. I wish I were a faster painter, so I could find time to paint for this in between my other doings...
-
"Arrrghhhhh" aw Ma, I coulda been a contender!" :'(
I missed by hours of getting in as I in a drunken stupor from work miss judged the time difference and flubbed it! Prof was kind enough to offer a chance but silly me was sleeping on this side of the world......I'll just enjoy the pressing of the buttons and post my "almost entries" in other categories. lol
Link to my first "almost" entry, enjoy.

Glad it's that time of year again. I did so enjoy voting on today's entries.

Didn't get mine in either. Have 6 teams painted & one more almost done. I just have a problem taking, editing & posting pictures. Well maybe next year. ::)

My guess is that several of us at this point *only* know one thing for certain and that is that we have three entries completed.
-
Best of luck to all
I'm already admiring the entries
I'm glad I didn't try and enter last minute as we appear to have sold our house this w/e and have to move in 3 weeks!
-
It's always a big highlight of the year. It comes round so fast ??? Very high standard stuff. Maybe if I start now I might enter next year?
I notice the number of votes cast seems up on last year? Its a good sign for the health of the forum.

I'm not even sure what I'm entering for round 4 and after o_o
I'm limited in choices on Round 10, so I'm sure what I'll be painting for that one.

As a member for almost 2 years, I am embarrassed to say, I was not very aware of the LPL until the last few months. I had some vague notion about it, but was so lost on the various boards and people's epic stuff, it just didnt get enough of my attention. I plan to enter next year since my dissertation will be done....finally.

Just fitting 5 minis in and keeping a level of detail seemed impossible. My pictures were in my opinion very small and lacking in detail. ???
The limit is probably due to bandwith issues. I think it is to be expected that with smaller size, you lose some detail. Depending on your painting style the end result can still look great or be 'meh'. The Kevin Dallimore painting style looks great on small size pictures, but on large detail shots it loses some of its sizzle.
Resized to about the LPL requirements (when you have to fit 5 miniatures in one picture) my style gives the following result:
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7061/13386381303_18bde43e83_o.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/kwindels/13386381303/)
Detail shot of the same miniature (a bit over-exposed, just a point and shoot picture for a battle report)
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7205/13386614434_7e2232f976_o.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/kwindels/13386614434/)
Not the greatest brushwork in the world, but still more detail than you'd think from the previous shot (e.g. the nails and ring). I think that high contrast painting styles might look slightly better on the smallish pictures (that are required) than more subdued painting styles.
Still, when I lose a round, I mostly have to agree with the voters :)
I have mediocre painting skills, subpar photography skills and the tendency to rush things a bit more than that's good for them. I spend 10-15 minutes at most on a picture (including cropping/resizing), and it shows.
-

I agree with you here, that's absolutely true. I've gone to higher and higher contrast over the years because of this... and also because of my failing eyesight I think ;)
I saw the detail you put in, and I really, really like your shuggoth/gibbering mouther. Excellent work there and I love the colours. A great entry and I look forward to more!
Thanks

I can't actually paint, but every year it inspires me to think about it, and I might actually have a crack over the next year or two to paint fifty minis. I know that sounds crazy daft but believe me for me it's a big deal the last mini I ever painted was my Avatar the RP Cloud Giant back in the 1990s.
The only thing that puts me off is the fact it might actually mak me cry in shame whn I see the results, but LPL does light a fire in me...
-
Glad it's that time of year again.
As I said on one of the threads LP is like a painting Christmas for me, and with The Great Escape on the gogglebox last night it really was like a good old British Christmas!

We may need to get you some photo training :)

Most of the time, I only use 2 lamps. I normally use a neutral background as shown, but it can easily be changed to a scenic one, if so desired.

5 is finished and waiting on photos. Rounds 6 through 8 are primed and prepped, but not actually started. Round 9 is just staring at me. No idea what I'm doing for 10.
The real problem is that my kids like playing with the figures before they are painted, and they managed to lose one of the figures for round 9. So I'm checking under couches, in kids beds, inside toy boxes, and wherever else I can think of hoping to find it. So far I've been looking for a week and I'm out of places to look...
-
All the extra days I had built up by getting he first three rounds in at once has evaporated and I'm back to my normal procedure of rushing to get each round done. Round 5 is about 75% done...but time is tight in the run up to the Easter Weekend. Everything else is cleaned and primed but I haven't started on any of it!
...once Again I'll be sending emails to the Prof in the middle of the night before each round... :-*
Good Luck boys and girls!

I just finished the fourth of five shields on my Hoplites for round 5. I have never spent more time on shields, ever... we'll see how well they turn out.
Aside from the shields, I also decided to go with non-metallic metal and spend time blending on these as well, so that's taken extra time. The irony is that the giant shields cover up all of the bronze armour anyway, so all that extra effort may be in vain unless I can figure out how to put a mirror in the shot... :)
Thanks

Real life has got the better of me this week and so I'll be using my "reserve" entry. It was painted right at the beginning of the competition because I needed the figures for a game. Just got to get some photo's of them tomorrow after work while there's still some light. Hopefully I'll have time next week to get some painting done.

Well, considering how your shields have been an inspiration to me, then I can't wait to see them. Yesterday, I added Neldoreth-style highlighting to the shields of my Round 5 entry. Of course, it is a pale shadow of yours. Ha, ha! My luck, we'll be matched up against each other...! lol

I feel your pain, man. My six year old likes to play with the figures. And even worse, likes to paint the figures. :'(

Ouch. I gave my little kids their own set of plastic one piece Skaven to paint. Pink, light blue Skaven are pretty distinctive. lol
Sadly, I couldn't keep them painting as they grew up. Dang playstation.

Round 5 is done but no idea for displaying it. Still painting a few others. Not started 10 as I can't find the figures I know I have somewhere!

Bless their little white cotton socks, it was I who bribed them to do that. I shun no mean to bring confusion to my enemies.

Ha, ha...like YOU need that, Hammers! The only confusion we have is how you are able to do what you do with brush and creative mind...!

My kids are a little small to start painting, unfortunately. I've never tried to fingerpaint a mini before, so maybe we should give that a shot. I kind of like the idea of the pink and light blue skaven though.

Son of Hammers may be receiving an anonymous tip soon mentioning that daddy likes to hide all the candy in the house by painting over it, so just to be safe he should chew on all the painted miniatures he can find. :-X
Actually, the missing figure has been found. He was... behind my painting desk. Where I apparently knocked him. :? Looks like I owe my kids an apology...

Still need to base figures, paint an animal and paint a prop. For some reason I'm being very leisurely about this ???
Next week is going to SUCK. This is easter weekend so I lose two days and Thursday is the day my school hosts a high school art show- with a few hundred kids and artworks. Plus the collegiate student show. It's easily the busiest week of the year for me. I think it will need to be 15mm's :)

That's got to be my closest to deadline entry to date. Other than priming and and a basecoat on one figure, as well as a start on the scenery, I did everything today. That's not going to work for upcoming rounds o_o
-
I still haven't sent mine in. Mine are all taken on a phone (camera is bust) and when I reduce the size to 800 x 800 the quality is awful. I can't see a way around it?
-
Yeah me too boys...I made this one by the skin of my teeth...I hope... ::)
Crazy work load and the man-flu have hurt my painting time terribly...what happened to that "time cushion" I had built up! o_o
Hang in there!
Blue
-
Time flies when you're having fun... I finished my rd6 at 2 a.m. this morning.
All week I kept adding this, then that....scenic scope creep at its worst... :?
-
I still can't find my Round 10 WWI figures and have no idea what I'm doing for Round 9 (7&8 I know). I need to do Border Reivers, Victorians and Old West so any of those would be useful. I'll probably follow the path of least resistance!
-
Crap week. I have major non-mini projects going on and the key people keep disappearing without doing any of their part. Well, 6th sent sort-of-successfully, 7th will be tricky again. At least there are slightly fewer other matters to worry about, I hope...
-
This was also my closest shave with the deadline. I went to bed with dullcoate drying on the figs. I woke up at 6 am to do a second dullcoate, and then placed the figs in the scene I'd set up the day before and photographed them. The pic was sent to Alex one hour before the deadline.
Luckily, round 7 is already done. Rounds 8 and 9 are primed, as of today. Blue...I was wondering the same thing: "Where did my 'cushion' go...?"

Sent my photo in for Round 7 tonight, though the figs had been one of the batches finished in preparation for the league. Finally got around to staging the photo...definitely something different. 8) ;)
Round 8 is about 3/4 of the way or more done, too, so this is a definite improvement on last week's close shave with the deadline! How's everyone else faring this time around...?
Mike Demana

Almost finished the bases for round 8. Starting with the bases for this entry, rather than doing them last. Got a couple of night shifts coming up, so hopefully get them finished nice and early.

I just finished! Four spare hours to go. Of course, it is almost 2 AM here...
I have round 8 primed and mounted on bases. Next week isn't going to be any easier than this one... :-I

Barely.
Finally got rid of a few other matters, but buffer level is currently zero. Next week could be a little bit easier, though, at least in theory.

I was hoping the LPL thing would facilitate me carving some time out of work and all the other stuff... in the end it was sleep time that was sacrificed :) It's been fun though, but tough on the brain chemistry! I'm enjoying it, as I always do and looking forward to the next few rounds!

It's a poisonus drug, is what it is. I know it is not good for me, yet i persist. >:D I am effing stupid that way just like the idea that I can drive through the narrow medieval streest of Visby with a combi while tired and stressed out like I did this morning. I could just *shit*: long sodding scratch along the side. >:(

Oooooh dear Peder :(
Yes, the LPL is addictive. And hard work. Well, we all like a challenge, don't we? ;)

Loved your latest entry Mate! One of my favorites so far!
By the by, I also used to paint exclusively with a 10x brush. Once one gets the hang of the paint drying a little faster and adjust, it's a great way to maintain total control. I only moved to try larger brushes after taking some mini painting classes and using a 0. I still tend to paint with smaller brushes anyway :D

Disaster struck last night when the various arms and loose parts of my Round 10 entry got covered in a burst tube if superglue. I spent an hour cleaning them with one part pretty much ruined. It's the LPL equivalent of training injuries! :)

Wow, you've had a run of bad luck this LPL. How many black cats crossed your path this year?
Have you tried soaking the parts in acetone? Don't try it on plastic, it will destroy certain types.

Funnily enough two live next door. They're always scrapping in my garden!
I'll see if I can get hold of some acetone and give it a try on the worst affected parts. Thanks!
-
If the parts are metal, it should do the trick.
Fingernail polish remover has acetone in it by the way, and might work on breaking down the superglue although pure acetone from the hardware store is much stronger. Theoretically you don't want acetone all over your hands, but when I glue my fingers together it's hard to avoid that :)

Well, i dropped one of my rd8 figures head first into a craft paint bottle last night... First time that has ever happened.
Luckily all the white paint came off, and just had to retouch a bit of the hair. I was sweating all the facial detail I had spent the past hour finessing.
It's always something.

Everytime I lose my grip on a figure while spinning it around, I envision that happening. Thank goodness it hasn't yet. I'm not sure what would happen first if I did:expletives or me snatching it up and running for the sink...!

Mike Demana
First thing - loud expletives... Second thing - dunk figure in pint sized rinse jar on my paint table... Third thing - more loud expletives.
I have a tendency to crowd my painting surface...so the paint bottle was in the wrong place..and I was using the typical 25mm slotta base with nothing else attached, so it wasn't hard to lose my grip.
Normally I don't attach bases until painting is complete, but time is short this week.
-
THIS week isn't the problem...in fact, I just sent in my entry. However, Round 9 is going to be rough. I leave Monday to chaperone a bus load of 8th graders to Washinton DC, and don't return till Friday. I've barely started on the entry, so I may have to admit defeat and submit a non-"New" team. I'll try, though... o_o
Good luck to everyone else getting their entries done. Dr. M...have you started on yours, yet? I know how you love that deadline pressure...! lol Reminds me of the cartoon of the cheetah who waits till the antelope gets further away before starting to chase it, to give it a sporting chance! lol

THIS week isn't the problem...in fact, I just sent in my entry. However, Round 9 is going to be rough. I'm in a similar boat :) I'll be doing the school chaperone thing myself- leaving for a week on the 17th o_o
I have round 8 done, just photographed and sent it tonight. I'm not 100% sure what I'm doing for round 9, but I do know I need to have round 10 finished and sent in at the same time. I'm maybe 30% done on round 10.
This is the life!

I just managed to pir together the setting for R08 before I sent on a Swiss vacation. R09 is painted but there is this piece of scenery I want to do. I hope I have time from Wednesday onwards. R10 is based, primed and basecoated, but as it is a prestige round one feels a certain preassure to put that 'bow' on it. Dear me...
-
I just started making the scenery for round 10.. While I haven't finished the miniatures for either 9 or 10..
Priorities.. ;D
-
Since I have diddley when it comes to WWI stuff, I had to place an order.
Still waiting for figs to ship, so depending on timing I may end up foregoing the bonus points for that round, and pulling something out of the Collective.
What is cool is that if the figs do come in in time, I can refer to Frank's most excellent rd 7 entry, as that is what I have on order, if you sub camels for horses... :)
-
Round 8 in, Round 9 almost finished. No bonus for me for Round 10, as I have no WWI minis at all. Still haven't decided what I am going to do though.

I love it!!!
Round 10 was the first round that I painted! :) Now I think I have to go back and up my game though...

Submitted at 2:30 AM! Each week gets a little bit later, so I'm glad there are only two weeks left!

lol
Never done that. Oh, I have. The garage door cost me a few quid to repair as well :( Damn new V70 with their fancy pancy steering capabilities and automatic gear >:(

Arrgh....Its only Monday and the wheels are already coming off of this week! I've just bee informed that I will be traveling for the wed-fri of this week! That does not fit in my already tight Painting schedule......geeesssh....people at work just don't Understand! ;)
Its going to be a rough finish...
Cheers,

It's always something....
Good news - Received my Rd 10 figs in mail today. (thanks to Brigade Games for speedy processing and shipping)
Bad news - In prepping the figs this evening, it appears the camel riders do not fit on the camels, unless they are laid back as if sitting in a recliner, or are positioned way out almost on the camels neck. Great... either one of those will look real nice...
So did some googlin' and sure enough find a blog entry from '09 that speaks to this exact issue, so I know I am not imagining things.
No time to address this with BG, so do a reorg of the team to be painted - luckily I ordered extra foot figs, so can add a couple of them to replace two of the camel riders.
Spent the evening sculpting suitable support - saddle and blankets, gear, etc so that remaining two riders will sit upright. Another late night...yeah, no prob. o_o
-
I have heard of the same problem. It might be that you need to match the right figure to the right camel.

Yep, there's one figure that can only fit on one of the two camel poses. The other three are messed up. From info on the blog (wargamingthegreatwar) post, the poses were originally one piece sculpts, and in separating rider from camel they really dorked it up....
Given the prices they charge for a single camel w/ rider, it ought to be good to out of the gate...

Well, rounds 9 and 10 are photographed and sent in. I am burnt out o_o
I had to complete two teams in a week, since I'm off into the wilderness for seven days on a camping/photography trip, starting Sunday.
Hopefully they're up to the competition :)
Good luck gents!
-
Good luck with the weather. You sure you can go 7 days without painting or are you bringing some figure to work on? lol

I thought about it ;)
Maybe a terrain project ???

Hmmm... looks like no new entry for Round 9... :'(
Curses, real life!
-
Real life has struck me and I have not been able and will not be able to take the time I need to complete the last two rounds. A pity a they are very close to completion. Travel for work and family takes priority, it's just how it is. I hope I will muster a will to complete them later as I though they were quite good ideas for entries, although not on the priority list for game projects.

That's such a shame Hammers. I've looked forward to your entries each week, they've been spectacular.

Indeed.
One of the highlights of this year's LPL.
Gonna miss my Sunday fix.
:'(

That is a great shame. I looked forward to your entry each week almost more than I did my own.

I'd like to register a complaint.
I don't mind occasional double and triple deadlines at work coinciding with LPL. That's business as usual. However, last weekend the temperature suddenly jumped from 8°C to 30°C. It may be the nicest weather we get all summer. Even the nights are wonderful. There are no insects yet. It's would be a perfect weather for any outdoor activity apart from skiing.
And here I am, working on my last entry for a few more nights. Couldn't we postpone this round to November or something?

I feel for you, Dolmot! Finnish weather probably doesn't give you many days like that. Did you at least open the windows and let in the fresh air...? ;) :D

It's the same here and it took the edge of having to stop before the finish line. Lovely really.
-
We just got the heat wave in today, and though I'm not participating in the LPL, I can understand how disencouraging it may seem. I'm stageing a small assembly of gamers this weekend, and it gets a bit harder to focus on the preparations lol
-
I'm definitely going to be struggling to finish round ten. I've already had to ditch my grandiose idea for the 'big thing' due to running out of time. On the plus side I've painted more figures for the LPL than I painted in the last year.
-
-- and that is the biggest "win" of them all...!

I am falling afoul
Of real life as well...sigh...work is just crushing my will to live this week...let alone paint...:(. I will probably be running an old team for the final
Round...much to my frustration.

I am glad to say that I just submitted my previously-unpublished (aka new!) WWI era team including my big thing! I had fallen off the train for a while there, using new photographs of older figures thanks to work and life and work... like many others I see! Even though it was a lot of work, I'm sad that it's over! :)
It's been great though, everyone who painted, commented, and voted made it a really good time, so thanks for taking the time to come out and take part! Most of all, thanks to Alex and those others who organized and coordinated the league as well as the hosting of it!
Great times,

Finally got my Round 10 team in. Whilst I have enjoyed the experience I will admit it has taken a lot out of me. If I enter next year I will plan my painting a little more carefully.
-
Round 10 submitted, no theme bonus for me.
-
I've more or less finished, just the photo to take in the morning. I'd planned a crashed zeppelin as my big thing hut ran out if time. I may build it anyway though.
-
All done. Didn't go completely smoothly, but done nevertheless. Especially the last two nights were a bit rough for various reasons.
Coming up next, a craft beer festival in the city centre. I heard they have about 100 local products available. I consider sampling them all. It's about 29°C there again, and later in the evening we'll probably continue with the hockey semifinal. Cheers! :D
-
I got mine in with 12 minutes to spare! My internet suddenly stopped as I was trying to email. Round 10 has been cursed. I fully expect to draw Captain Blood now.
-
I actually made it! These last two months have been more productive than several years and even if real life has been quite demanding the last month, I managed to do nine different new entries! Yeah yeah yeah! Viva el LAF!
-
This was my most taxing round, too. Thursday night, I set me phone to wake me up every hour. I would get up, do a little work on the figures, set them aside to dry, and go back to sleep. An hour later, the alarm would go off, and I'd repeat the process. When I get down towards the end on a batch of figures , there are a number of stages of 5-10 minutes work, then waiting for it to dry -- particularly on the flocking. I knew I would have almost no time to work in them Friday, thus, my Thursday evening/Friday morning torture session... lol
No "big thing" from me...I simply don't own anything that might apply.

I surmises this is a feeling everyone who has attended the LPL at one time, and who has painted entries for the rounds can concur.
I know I had never a more "intense" painting time than those ten weeks a couple years ago.
And since my downtime is almost over and my hobby is kicking in again, I guess I will attend the LPL again next year.
So yeah. Viva the LPL, via el LAF
