Title: Master Thread for Things Found in Poundland, etc
Post by: Diplomatist on March 06, 2014, 12:07:58 PM
MODs - I hope this is the right part of the Forum.  If you think it better elsewhere, then please move it with my apologies.

Every so often someone suggests that we have a thread for handy things spotted in the discount stores.

I'll start the ball rolling by pointing out that Poundland have again got 1/43rd diecast vehicles in stock (the ones in blisters with Russian writing).  These have proved useful in the past - pics at http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=54916.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=54916.0).

I had hoped to get some Easter decorations for making dino-nests out of, but nothing yet  ;D

I have seen packs of polystyrene/plastic easter eggs in The Works - another good source of cheap stuff

My latest Poundland purchase was a pack of insects. They're fairly rubbery and I don't think they'll take paint, but will be useful for giant bugs and scorpions in dungeon (and possibly pulp) settings

Over here we have 99 cent stores, which I'd guess are pretty much the same concept as Poundland.

I found a plastic toy speedboat, which if you cut off the cockpit and engine bit and flip it upside-down makes a perfect hull for a 28mm late movie or mid-TNG era Star Trek Shuttle. A couple highlighter pens for nacelles and it should be gold.

Yeah, I got some handy insects from Poundland and Wilkos at Halloween along with some decent skulls - http://diplomatist2.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/pulp-loves-halloween.html (http://diplomatist2.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/pulp-loves-halloween.html)

That sounds great - I'd like to see photos sometime  :)

The Works currently has some "joke shop" ants at 25p a packet in their clearance section.
Also (Revell?) snap-together Star Wars kits - Millenium Falcon, Jedi fighter, X wing, Republic gunship, all scaled to fit the box but prepainted and only £4.99 so might be of use to some.

Got one of the snap fix ships. Currently converting the falcon to a yt1300 varient.  Moved the cockpit to the centre and working on the panelling. Little smaller than the xwing miniatures one. If u didn't have one it would work well as a proxy.

Saw an article on Zabadak's Zombie World blog about Wilkinsons selling a couple of interesting vehicles in the right scale for 28mm figs. Went in today and got a modern single decker bus and an american four wheel drive with a trailer on which there is a mini cooper (go figure!) The whole lot cost about £8. Bargain!

I assume that Poundland is the equivalent to our Dollar store.  I found sets of Batman and Spiderman Heroclix!.  The Joker is now a Tommygun wielding David Niven (Crooked Dice head) and commissioner Gordon is Michael Caine. Took the Doc Octopus arms off for the Hydra minis repair bot!

Awesome!
The toy stores around here sell those busses as well as trams. I've been in doubt wether I should get one to serve as a zombie spawnpoint.
One remark : If it burned out completely, the rubber accordion would have gone too. (I know I'm nitpicking  o_o)

Ah, but on a real articulated bus there's plenty of metal bracketing and linkage under the accordion, so it wouldn't just be separate bits anyway!  ;)

They are tall, so a chop across the centre would give you 2m length and with cross beams some good gunfighter without too much hassle ;D

Found this little bit of used lizard furniture at a garage sale (dunnae worry: I've washed it already):

Has cracked/chipped areas in places (as well as air bubbles in the casting), and the "leaves" on top are IMO too large, but with a little putty and repainting, it should make a good barrow entrance for fantasy or horror games.

Is that Lizard thing from Poundland?

What you can buy is rolls of mesh called gutter guard - you can use them to make nice chain link fences

Green (with black mottled effect) Grass Effect carpet

£6.99 for 1mx2m

It has rubber dimples on the back for none slip, and was tightly wrapped up, so the dimples have left indentations in the pile, but I am sure this will pop out. The photo makes it look a bit monotone green, but actually their is a subtle dark mottled pattern that makes it look right for grass.

I bought it today.

I'm kicking myself that I didn't post in this thread first. (Mods, sorry for the bother, but if you want to delete the topic in the VSF board...)

I was in Home Bargains in Belfast and it looks like they've got their hands on a whole bunch of toys from the Walking With Dinosaurs 3D movie. Of particular interest to the wargamer: packs of the three main pachyrhinosaur characters for 99p, and 'collectible', blind-bagged, glow-in-the-dark models for 19p each.

Packaging:

Size comparison with Empire of the Dead Sherlock, Red Box elf, and old placcy bretonnian:

(Full size) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/65937633@N05/13883088729/sizes/o/)

The movie was ruined at the last moment by committee suits shoving in voiceovers and bookends, but before that the dinosaurs were overseen by a group that included David (http://www.davidkrentz.com/davidkrentz/David_Krentz.html) Krentz (http://www.davidkrentz.com/Krentz_Presentz_Sculpture/Home.html), so you know the quality is going to be good and as accurate as 2013 knowledge allowed. What with some visible but faint horizontal lines on the models, I'd guess they were printed from the original (or modified) animation models, albeit at a low res for cheap plastic toys. That is one caveat - the shallow, slightly blobby detail - but it is there, looks improvable with a judicious paintjob, and it is on cheap placcy toys! A fiver will get you a herd of fifteen and that'll hide most of the very few drawbacks. :D

They're 80-85mm, which at 1:56 makes them between 4.5-5m. A bit wee for Pachyrhinosaurus, but then with the lack of frill spikes (also in the film stills on the accompanying cards) I guess these are meant to be young versions of the characters, which helps. ;D Anyway, anyone who remembers how to roll plasticene snakes should be able to easily whip up a variety of putty horns to attach to turn them into proper Pachyrhinosaurs (http://dinotoyblog.com/2010/03/19/pachyrhinosaurus-papo/), or reasonable approximations of smaller ceratopsians like Centrosaurus (http://www.nhm.ac.uk/about-us/news/2012/june/muscle-reconstruction-reveals-how-dinosaurs-stood111815.html), Styracosaurus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Styracosaurus_dinosaur.png), Einiosaurus (http://www.fossils-japan.com/img/dinosaur/Einiosaurus.jpg), Achelousaurus (http://atrox1.deviantart.com/art/Achelousaurus-horneri-161575309), Diabloceratops (http://baryonyx-walkeri.deviantart.com/art/Diabloceratops-376645574), etc. etc. etc...
I don't know if I'll stick any extra horns on them, but I wouldn't mind getting a few more for my revamped Kroot mercenary ideas. At the least. Chop 'n' swap a few heads.

The blind-bagging of the luminous models is annoying, but I was able to feel the frills of the pachyrhinosaurs through the bag and avoid duplicates of those. (Though if you don't mind standing in a middle of a shop and fondling the merchandise for a while, you'd get them for even cheaper) I ended up with the Troodon, which - despite the up-to-date-feathering - isn't very inspiring for any kind of wargaming use, as far as I can see.

Still, detail isn't too bad on close inspection, aside from slightly miscast feet. Though looking at the range in non-glowing form (http://www.bbcshop.com/walking-with-dinosaurs/walking-with-dinosaurs-single-figure-1-supplied-blind-bags/invt/50705), I think I'd much rather get me hands on a couple of those Gorgosaurs or Quetzalcoatlus instead. Maybe Hesperonychus...

Found these EXCELLENT placemats (I think they're vinyl?) in the dollar store here in Ontario - $4 for a package of 4 (I just grabbed two loose ones for $2, it'll be more than I'll ever need). Each mat is 17.5" x 11.5"

Perfect for the day you want to make a "Native Hut", Cambodian village, or whatever similar things come to mind.

I had a brainwave today when I was in one of the cheapy stores and walked past the spice rack. I already have some dollar store herbs and spices to use as scatter (tree debris, etc.), but I saw poppy seeds and realized the stuff might just make amazing gravel (or a little stone scatter)!

Poundworld and Poundland UK have packs of Shot-glasses 30 and 40 to a pack some clear and others tinted. Which when inverted would make nice stable temporary flying bases (clear) or pressure vessel storage tanks if painted. I purchased 3 packs and now have in excess of 90 for my gaming pleasure.

You can use them to show models are airborne by simply slipping them underneath a normal miniature. I've even used them with Battlemechs to show a jump move. (Incredibly stable and sturdy up to a point of heavy handedness)

Alternatively you could fill them with strong drink and slowly work your way through them. This won't help your wargaming-fu but it will be fun! Until the apocalyptic level hangover.  :D Now off to Poundland....

Anyone in the UK missed this on TV yet?

http://www.dinosaurdiscovery.co.uk/

A new partwork that lets you build two 1.2m tall Tyrannosaurus models over time - one skeleton, one life appearance. Part one gives you the main part of the skull and 18 push-in teeth for 99p. It's still on sale in shops, last I saw a couple of days ago. It has possibilities for scenery but because it's big, chunky 27cm long lump of plastic, it might be best suited as a goofy-huge Warhammer-Realm-of-Chaos style terrain piece, or a carved stone effigy, possibly as part of a dark lord's fortress.
Me, I'm getting it because I'm mildy tickled by the idea of a big(gish) Tyrannosaur skull lying about the place. I think I'll pick up the second part for the skull interior, but at £6 for each subsequent issue that might be as far as I go. Maybe also take a bit of putty and accurise up the design/moulding considerations. It's not too bad. Better than the dusty, mushy, grey, outdated pics in the NHM-connected magazine it comes with. But I digress.

And for more dinosaurs, I saw the local Poundstretcher has a couple of better-than-average examples. A decent Triceratops and, way out of left field, what looks like a Miragaia! (http://dinosaurs.wikia.com/wiki/Miragaia)

(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7611/16133310953_bac00a520a_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/qzDrgF)

Edit: This guy's repaint (http://baryonyx-walkeri.deviantart.com/art/Miragaia-244980952) on Deviantart makes it look better. Not bad for two quid!

the STAR WARS Command figures at 69p a pack . You get nine figures in a pack but they are about three inches tall therefore not of use to most gamers. Someone might have a use for them

sorry about that ,it's my bad i forgot to say
They are from  HomeBargains
They also have box sets containing nine figures and four space ships for £2-99
the one i bought contained two jedi starfighters and a vulture pod which were all about 15mm scale. The other vehicle was an ARC170 Starfighter but that was small probably closer to 10mm or 6mm scale

Not poundland, but rather more upmarket! I bought this form Disney shop in Birmingham's Bull Ring Shopping center. It normally retails for £7 but it was in a clearance sail for £3.50! Nice!

Weathered and everything. :)

Probably the most exciting thing in this thread: a cardboard tube!

(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5801/20336150070_9cd97203ca_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/wZ35V5)

Found in Poundstretcher, reduced for what I hope is an obvious reason. Every tube, for Pringles and things, gets eyed up for tower duties; but ideas of multiple slottable floors and interiors, like a medieval Sylvanian Families windmill, happened when I looked at this. The inner tube still needs a bit of cutting, but IMO the hard work's already done for 50p.

And the biskwits are still tasty, too.

Mmm glad the bishkuts taste good. lol I almost bought a tube of mini m&ms for the tube lol

If you're buying a cardboard tube anyway, it helps if it's stuffed full of sugary snacks. lol

Mmm glad the bishkuts taste good. lol

Just for elucidation, I dunno how far these ads (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TiB1nSXQeK0) travelled, but well, hence 'biskwits' and 'mini Vinnies'. :)

Home Bargains is selling black Stomp Stones in-shop for £2 each. The website has 10 for £19.90.

http://www.homebargains.co.uk/products/10393-ecotrend-garden-stomp-stones-case-of-10.aspx
http://www.stompstone.com

12x12" plastic paving 'stones', about 1" tall, hollow underneath (http://www.stompstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/about2.jpg), made from recycled tyres and things. Pretty nice, natural, irregular slate surface on top, with a slightly sandy texture. Looks like they could easily take paint 'n' flock for a pretty nice, relatively cheap, modular board. The only things are the bevelled edges, which would make the divisions between tiles a lot more obvious if you couldn't cover them up somehow; and some of them seemed fairly bowed in the middle, although that might be because they weren't stored flat and horizontally.

The 'Action' chain has some christmas/pine trees. The 'snow' is permanently fixed, I've hoped to be able to peel is of but this will prove to be too much work. Maybe I'll paint/flock them somewhere in the future, but they can serve as is (with rebasing) for now.

I also noticed some die-cast metal cars that are usable with 28mm

A couple of old dino things: I've seen these Walking With Dinosaurs figures (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=64191.msg802785#msg802785) pop up in The Works recently. And Poundstretcher has some smallish but nice-quality brachiosaurid, with the same knockoff branding and cheap price as these guys (http://leadadventureforum.com/Themes/waltz_tp/images/post/xx.gif).

One thing to watch out for, at least with the M16 that I bought, is that it's secured to its base with 2mm triangular torq screws. Cost me a whole £1.50 extra to get the proper screwdriver from Amazon ;D

Poundland Tewksbury.

I picked up a set of four double-ended sculpting tools with metal ball ends.

They are being sold as 4PK NAIL ART TOOL under the Artistic Flair name and on the Nail Art or nail  varnish aisle.

They look like this;

The Works has "Grafix Clip kits" at £2 each.
Not sure of scale, but they have Black Hawks, attack helicopters (Apache?) some aircraft and some cars.
All the same sized box, so probably mixed scales.
Include acrylic paint and a brush which is quite good for applying base texture (saves destroying a decent brush).

Picked up a box of "Domino Topple" from Poundland. About 45 Red, Yellow and Blue oblongs.

Just to see wat could be done with them? Then it hit me!

They have a raised edge rim and are 1" by just over 1/2" which could be a window frame!?

So I will stick some of them onto kitbash buildings as one-pane windows! 28mm scale-ish? Yay!!

Dare say there are other uses as well for them.  o_o

The Works has some 1:43 diecast metal cars at the moment for £2.00 each. Bit large, but not glaringly so.

As with some of their other stuff, it looks like they were part of a magazine subscription at some point.

Picked up a couple of Range Rovers and an Infiniti FX. They have some sports type cars as well, but I was looking for more general street furniture for post apoc scenery.

Here's another smaller pill sorter that probably works better with moderns.  The container/tanks/storage thingies probably work better for scifi too, and they only technically come from dollar/pound stores.  Bottlecaps, though if you're gonna be buying fizzy beverages anyway...  Lou-Anne modeling everything for scale.

Those police vehicles are definitely useful. I've used them for sci fi games, making a generic truck and a transport for my genestealer cult. In addition, I've used the flashing beacons to decorate entry controls on some hab units.

They are also great for rusty old wrecks (you can just make out such a car in the background).

Plastic articulated dragons at £2 each in The Works - I saw them in the Crawley branch in the UK. Not as good as metal models as you would expect, but I'm sure some people would be happy to use them as is for RPGs, or hide the articulation with filler and repaint them. They could make a good statue painted grey. You could get 2 of them and paint one grey and sit it on a plinth, then replace it with the coloured one when when it is reanimated by a wizard or a ward. They are around 12-15 cms high from memory, and there are a number of different types. Worth a look.

Poundland have some similar, but slightly smaller.
Also Home Bargains had 3 or 4 different styles last time I was in, including some very SF looking purple ones and some with flowers.
Poundstretcher have some too, at about £2 - £3.

Best of all, most places that I've been in there are loose bits that have dropped off and are just scattered across the floor/shelf. So if you tidy up all the loose bits when you pick a ball you could get extra foliage.

It was even better when they had them in Aldi - they had really large ones but they were stacked in a large basket so they shed pieces quite profusely, which mostly dropped through the bottom of the basket onto the floor.
It is only fair to help the shop staff by picking up the loose bits which otherwise constitute a slip hazard. :~}

Was in Aldi this morning and found a cheap paper table cloth in their holiday stuff. It's textured and about 7,5 ' by 4,5 ' . Would work ok for desert or beach terrain

Has a plastic backing and looks pretty durable. Not if you plan to game all your little wars on desert terrain, but for someone like me who just uses it once in a while it is good enough. Cost me 4 €.

Home Bargains have the Batman V Superman version of the Batwing , good for 15mm or 20mm figures
They also have a 28/32mm version of the Batmobile from the same movie

Found these in Poundland Yesterday and picked a pack up.

 http://www.poundland.co.uk/christmas-led-lanterns-brown-6-pack

It was the lantern pieces which i thought might be useful but the light pack could come in handy for terrain builders too.Could come in handy for adding light to the inside of buildings and such.

Poundland appears to have some new vehicles in, so may be worth a look. I picked up three vehicles that should fit with my SF stuff nicely. The ambulance is shown below. On the same body is a more general truck and a fire engine. They're shown next to an Infinity figure for scale.

edited to add: They're branded as "Big City Trucks"

These look like they'll fit in fairly well with the Antenocitis made for Infinity (http://www.antenocitisworkshop.com/designed-for-infinity/vehicles/) vehicles.

They have some other cartoony type vehicles that I couldn't quite see a use for, which was a shame.

I also picked up a set of "pipe straws" in PoundWorld. These are plastic straws, complete with T-pieces and bends. Amazon (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Connectors-Straws-Plastic-Reusable-Drinking/dp/B00MQY4JGE) sells the same things, only for quite a lot more ;D

Thanks for the compliment :D The Infinity figure is from the Merovingienne sectorial starter pack (https://store.corvusbelli.com/products/ariadna/280153-0342-f-r-r-merovingienne-sectorial-starter-pack) of the Ariadna faction. I'm not sure if it's available separately.

Much as I like the figures, the giant guns and some of the poses annoy me, so I replaced her gun with one from Hasslefree, and replaced a bit of her arm. It's a nice set, although I ended up converting most of them to some extent. The figure on the left of the set is actually female, something I didn't realise until I opened the box. She got a head swap and a shiny new ponytail. There are some more pictures on a blog post (http://zemjw.blogspot.co.uk/2014/07/more-sf-adventurers.html) I did on them (back when I maintained a blog)

I suspect you can get the starter set from Wayland or Arcane minis for quite a bit less than Corvus Belli themselves

Thanks for the info, she looked like a good match for a pulpy pilot but the rest of the set don't work for me I'm afraid.
Having said that its out of my price range as well.
Cheers anyway

I spotted... This morning in Poundland. A series of "Army" "Combat" Trucks and Lorries. Caste in a Dark Olive Green/Drab Plastic and about 28mm, scale to my eye!

On closer Inspection it turned out that they were...

A Bin Lorry (Trash compactor)
A Road Sweeper/Vacuum Lorry
And probably the most useful. A Towing crane Lorry.

All the same Cab different cargo loads. Also exactly the same as the Yellow ones they used to have and they probably have the Skip Lorry in there somewhere?! lol

The skip was very useful though.

Combat Binmen Anyone? ;)

I have loaded a pic on the Project Z facebook page until I figure out what to do on here.

Don't know if any other Tesco's are doing this? But my local one is selling off ThunderBird 7" Diecasts at £2.50 each!

I got 2 Thunderbird 3 cos I can make them into some kinda SSM/SAM. Just a bit of a repaint and possible filling here and there!

They do have action sounds if you twist or press a button. But the batteries can be removed or will wear out.

I use their Country Maple for washing the bases of groups of figures and recommend it. Coverage with other shades has been mixed though. Useful for buildings though I've found.

I made the mistake of buying the Millenium Falcon from Aldi a few weeks ago. I had hoped it would be about 1:300, but it's way too big, and actually sits between any useful scales :-[

I think I read on a thread here that the X-Wing was about 1:48, but I could be wrong. I have been tempted to buy one to find out, but I'm still smarting over the Falcon :'(

Found in "Dollar Tree" (a dollar store chain) in the US:

According to the side, it's made of glass microbaloons in an acrylic binder:

Did some tests:

My initial intent was to see if it would be useful as a general gap-filler and texturing agent for foam and/or cardboard, but on testing it, the real gold is that it seems to be a really good snow.

Has a smooth powdery feel when wet, sort of like damp/wet sand, but finer, super low inertia, and with more binding. Very, VERY soft, so a feather-light touch is need to shape it, but mechanically it behaves a lot like scale snow. Very easy to push around into nice looking drifts and clumps, and you can see my attempt to make a 28mm scale footprint with a ball tool. Apologies for not getting a better photo of that, BTW. I think my next project is going to have to be finally sorting out some decent photo lighting kit.

When dry it has a finely porous powdery look with a touch of subsurface scattering, and is surprisingly firm. It flexes slightly, and takes fingernail impressions, but holds together solidly; rather similar to EPS foam, actually. It lacks the "glitter" of real snow, but otherwise looks really, really good!

The "wetness" visible around the edges of the cardboard sample in the pic is not part of the spackle, but rather results from my attempt to give it a little bit of "shine" using Future. The spackle itself doesn't soak or puddle substrates like that.

The Future experiment didn't really work. It soaked in, and looked good at first, but once it dried, it didn't really change the spackle's appearance at all, aside from that bit of gloss on the cardboard itself. The Future also seemed to rewet the spackle a bit, making is soft (not re-dissolved, just squishy like soft rubber) until the Future dried. Pure water also has this effect. The major takeaways from this experiment were 1) that the dried spackle is fully porous like an open-celled foam, and 2) it may be worth repeating the experiment with a non-water based clear. Would want to make sure it's a non-yellowing clear though.

The label says you can soften it with a little water if it's too dry. I tried that, and although it works, it seems to cut the acrylic binder unevenly, causing the Spackle to dry with a much coarser porosity. Not good for regular snow, but good for slushy, partly melted snow. Strength seems unaffected though.

Although the label says "paintable in 30 minutes", this was not the case with my tests. In my experience, you really want to let it dry overnight. Very, very thin applications are safe to handle within an hour or two, but anything with any thickness needs to be carefully set aside and not touched 'till the next day. By said next day though, it'll be completely safe to handle or paint or whatever.

Oh, and it does work well as a gap filler and texturing agent. It's even sculptable as such, and could be used to add nice 3D stonework to cardboard and other things like that. Though as previously noted, it really takes a feather-light touch to sculpt.

May have been mentioned already. Star Wars vessels in blister packs in Poundland. Not consistent scale, and I suspect they would not be compatible with X-Wing, but good candidates for the likes of BFG with a repaint or as conversion material.

Not quite poundland, but in a few of the local K-Marts that are closing down, they've got some of the Nintendo Microland playsets for some pretty hefty discounts.

The tiles all of them use could be useful for some play on their own if you would get enough of them, though they wouldn't fit based minis in the stuff that has interiors, but they are on a 1" grid with each tile being 2"x2" and interlock rather well. The terrain stuff on them are interesting and could even be popped off for use elsewhere.

But the interesting thing is that with, at least, the Legend of Zelda ones, the windwaker characters are the right size and proportions that you could use them as pretty well done, prepainted gnomes or halflings...or kids if you want to go that route.

Sure, they might be a bit cartoony, but they might be worth it if you don't mind that or just like the aesthetics of them...the size comparison is Tetra standing on a Reaper 1" round base with "Erick, Paladin Initiate (Bones)" by Reaper (77197) on the same size base

Poundland has Star Wars Biros. The pen topper is (supposed to be) a light sabre, but would make a good bit of machinery in 28mm, they are about an inch & a quarter tall (30mm).

They come in pairs for, guess what? that's right a pound, i.e. 50p each.
My wife is always looking for cheap pens, so now she has six & I have some Sci-fi scenery (at least when I have based & painted them)

Found in Home Bargains (UK) today, wee vehicles for the Skylanders video game.

They have a lovely spacey, pulpy look to them, and with the right paintjob could make some nifty one-man fighter or scout ships.

I picked up the Sky Slicer, Sea Shadow and Dive Bomber models for £2.99 each. Pictures below of them in packaging if anyone is minded to look for them, and also with a Crossover Miniatures not-Green Lantern for scale.

Cheers

Forgot to check how much there were, but Tesco have some halloween animal skeletons.

They're pretty much 1:1, so the dog and cat are kind of big and creepy. However, the mouse/rat could be useful as a giant undead creature.

I had a look at Poundland's halloween selection as well, but there wasn't much of interest this year :-[

For £2.99 you get 12 cacti , 6 are 5 1/2cm tall the other 6 are 4cm. They come out of the bowl very easily.

A recent visit to Lidl (UK) and I saw the Parkside Hot Glue Gun for just £7.99.

But is was while browsing the offer leaflet that my interest was tweeked.

On page 18 and available from Thursday 16th November they have a 3D Pen for £19.99

Rather than try to explain the principal here is a link to the official Lidl site;
https://www.lidl.co.uk/en/Non-Food-Offers.htm?articleId=8133

I'm not sure, but could this be used to fill Milliput moulds and make copies?

I hope you find this of interest.

Poundland has some toy cars that can be used for Sci-fi vehicles. They’re not huge, I’ll think they’ll make good vans or with a bit of work the back skip/box comes off and the front could be used for a tractor unit of a larger truck.

It's a plastic battery powered emergency lantern, bought for $2 at a "99 Cents Only" chain store (yes, you read that correctly; they've been pulling that crap for awhile now). Good for a sci-fi gubbin like a power generator or escape pod, I figure.

I popped some batteries in it to test it's lantern-ness, and it is surprisingly bright, though IMO unusable as-is, as it is omnidirectional and undiffused. There's simply no way to have it anywhere in your field of view without it putting a cigarette hole in your retina. Still, I will be salvaging the LED strips and reverse engineering the circuit when I take it apart, as they may well be useful for other projects.

Those ships look very cool.

Sadly, wrong scale for me.

In the USA, Dollar Tree has Batman vehicles for sale, for $1.00.  They're made by Hot Wheels, and some are quite nice.  Others, from the movies, are of dubious quality, in my humble opinion, but your may think differently.

Scored an original Batmobile for cheap, and it looks to be good for true, 15mm figs, I suspect.

My local Aldi (here in the UK) is selling rolls of artificial turf, 1mx2m, for £6.99 each. Unusually, the 'turf' is actually a fairly fine flock in a mid-green not dissimilar to some industrial carpets, so very suitable as a gaming mat. At that price, they're either usable as-is or hackable into tiles. I'm thinking of the latter, with some paint and/or mastic detailing for roads/rivers, etc.

I have two of those Aldi grass mats, which I use to protect the dining room table from my wargame table sections.
They are nice - very dark green and uniform, but the main issue with using them as a covering for a board is the little green domes all over the back side.
Doesn't matter for the purpose I used them for, but would make it hard to stick them to a board.

I've had one of the carpets for a couple of years. Originally with the intention of using for gaming. It's a tough piece of kit. I've used it for camping(two seasons) and a couple garden parties, and along side the paddling pool. Its been folded stuffed in the boot.
My son spent time lazing in the sun picking the grips off the back.(he was four at the time). In short the come off really easily. I reckon you could take them off with a paint scraper. So its definitely up the task of gaming mat.

I was in The Works today and they had a range of 1/2000 WW2 battleships and carriers.
Attached is a piccie of what they had in our local store.

I didn't buy any because I had no use for them, but thought others here may have a use.

Even if you don't game at that particular scale, I've found naval ships at smaller scales excellent sources for gubbinz for scifi projects. Usually those kits are too expensive for the purpose, but at GBP3,- a piece, I'd be all over them... ;)

This may have been mentioned before, but...

The Works (UK) have a pack of 16 'wooden mini plaques' for 1 pound: lasercut plywood, 25 x 70 x 2mm, with rounded ends. Ideal cavalry bases for 28mm figs.

They also have a pack of 110 wooden discs for 2 pounds: roughly equal numbers of 20mm, 30mm and 40mm discs, 1.5mm thick.

Look in the 'craft' section.

Very nice find, I have a professional hotglue gun and very pleased with the usage ideal for glueing plastic plants, foam (note may melt with extreme heat) and other materials quickly and great ease. Should imagine that the piece as shown above is sufficient enough for hobby use and the price of the extra hotglue sticks is also very good. Should I have found it, I would probably also grabbed one.

I told 'Flatpack' about similar 'Christmas trees' from 'The Works' about this time last year,
only to find that (& I quote from a manager of a branch of The Works) 'The last restock
of Christmas items is the first delivery in November'. !!!?????
Sure enough this September they (Christmas trees) appeared again on the shelves.
My advice is, if you want them get them quick. What I did manage to get (before the 2017
embargo) got a quick thinned dark green wash & were suitable for 'summer' use.
Maybe Flatpack might post a picture or two of his trees, along side his 10mm cold war

They're OK, but not made to last. I've gone through several over the years building terrain, but considering the times I had need for one so far, buying an expendable one when I do is still more economical than investing in a rugged (semi)professional one (I was eventually given one  of those by my wife though, for the reasons below lol ).

The mechanism in these is flimsy, and the first thing to go (and the only moving part, really) is the feeding mechanism; the trigger will either break or misalign or even break some internals, and you're stuck pushing the glue stick through the gun with your thumb.

This works, but I've had two of them shorting out on me because glue started to flow into the gun, as well as through the nozzle. Loud bang, lights out, etc.

Not fun, even in the best of times, but when this happens at night, when the wife and kids are already asleep in the adjacent rooms, some excitement will ensue... ::)

So yeah; expect them to break sooner rather than later, but they will usually last a project or two. Then again; for the money, they're hard to beat... ;)

Not Poundland but still fairly cheap: 20mm MDF Christmas buildings for £3 each.
Just saw these this morning. Pic as bought with some Chiltern winter Germans for scale.

Also saw some smaller 15mm ones in Hobbycraft for £2 each:

These style of buildings are now  two for £3at The Works

My local 'The Works' (Barry S/Wales) currently has a selection of Nanometal Halo figures for £2 each - hidden in plain sight by the tills!

Not the greatest paintjob or sculpts mind!

there are Harry Potter ones too - looked at them briefly but I'm not even sure they would be repaintable.

Scarborough Works had both at £2, but there were a few in Poundland too (at only £1)

The Works has some Disney Infinity figures at £3.
Most are way too big to be much use, but there is an "Age of Ultron" robot that stands about 4 inches high, acceptably painted, that could make a good giant robot for Pulp/SF games.

In Home Bargins, UK, they are selling a Schleish DC figures. The Wonder Woman one might make a good titan, or with a paint job, a female Talos, £2.99.

Hope to convert mine for use in Pulp, VBCW, Sealion, WW1. WW2 etc. etc.
The 28mm figure is for scale & does not come from Poundland.

Diecast (I think) models of the Stay Puft marshmallow man. About 100-150mm tall, so not to scale with 28mm but impressive all the same. £3.

Visited the 1-Euro-Store today.

Found a few bags of animals and one with big Cowboys.

(http://i.imgur.com/3EnHZTfl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/3EnHZTf)

I had no reference figure with me, so I had to guess. rhino and hippo work for me....;)

(http://i.imgur.com/Tj95AxBl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/Tj95AxB)

The big ape probably only a heroic setting like Conan.

(http://i.imgur.com/ZD8CoARl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/ZD8CoAR)

And I love these Cowbys. Especially their original paintjob. The silver jacket is ace....:)
And 4 minis for just one Euro...is okay for me.

(http://i.imgur.com/aSrIoLdl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/aSrIoLd)

So I couldn't resist to put some paint on one of them.
Took me around an hour....;)

Not really finished, but I have to do some other hobby-stuff this evening....:D

Cheers,
Don

For Burrows & Badgers players there are some small resin cast roses (blue & white. No idea why blue?) that can be easily spray painted a pale green to use as lettuces. In the area where they keep craft stuff.

For people looking for bigger projects, there a lot of large plastic Christmas baubles in a variety of styles (fluted, quilted, some covered in glitter, some with pointy ends). The glitter covered ones don't take paint well. The pointy ended ones can be cut in half to make Russian church roofs, some of the others can be cut in half to make SF buildings (or tents) or have legs fitted to make landed UFOs. The ones with a quilted pattern make reasonable looking hot air balloons.

slight necro on this thread, but it seems the most appropriate.

Found in ASDA this morning. I think it was £4 for the skull and £5 for the Buddha (or possibly the other way round)

Antelope skull that will be useful for pulp etc. Next to Hasslefree figure for scale
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3fJpbkhc-_aFx04dhpNaC1fW-cRBrHorFy-RJg5Da-TGo3ke8A1qdOmesQ3XNDiKBRYBQy5XwVuF2T2rt8lC_w3nh4fqTCbhAQOpWGOxNFlIXGvgRhRMeqZH071hddLqlCruyD_VCVUSL2ZH73abh2c=w1108-h831-no?authuser=0)

More Pulp usefulness. It's sold as a tealight holder, but a bit of weathering should make it more useful :)

The antelope is sold as a general household ornament and stands 25cm tall. I did wonder who would buy such a thing to actually use as an ornament, but I ran out of ideas after "serial killers"  ???

Cutting or adding a few fins/guns/antennas along with a different paint job and the origin becomes less clear.

Popular? I don't know how to quantify that. I'd say they did well enough that Nintendo has released maybe a dozen video games featuring Star Fox in some capacity. The most popular of those games would probably be Super Smash Bros. where Star Fox (Fox McCloud) features as a character and some levels are homages to the Star Fox game.

The ship below is called the Great Fox:

The ship I'm most familiar with is called the Arwing:

I believe the Arwing, or a variation of it, shows up in the ship kits you linked to.

All that said, these retail for something like $15-20 on Amazon, so a $6 find would be worth picking up as I do think they would look good with a little modifying and repainting.

or a coin. If/when I do I'll produce some photos.

Started work on the lamp posts,
but also picked up:-
some more ornamental trees,
Fountains,
& swing.

The trees will look good outside a Chateau (Digits
take note), as will the fountains.
The swing, taken apart, will become both a gateway
and a park bench.
Will post pictures as these progress.

Time to give this thread its annual halloween kick  :D

I picked up some 7" (18cm) plastic skeletons in Poundland yesterday. They're not articulated, but probably could be. My plan is to dismember them for a giant's graveyard thing. The name on them is "Creepy Town" Skeletons 4 pack.

They had some 12" (30cm) skeletons as well, which were articulated.

Poundland now has a lot of stuff that costs more than a £1, including these, which came in at £1.50. They had some lino type tiles with a hexagon pattern on them that I nearly bought, until I found out they were £6 :(

BIG reductions on Buzz Lightyear stock.
I couldn't resist:-
Zyclops Pods,

All at £4.33 each.
They will fit in very well with my 28mm Sci-Fi.

I've decided to do some 40mm up,
a) to scratch the 40mm itch that I have.
b) cuz I saw some ACW 40mm on e-bay cheap (£1 a figure)
c) Sarrissa discounted their 40mm ACW buildings while I was dithering.

So these 'picket fences' are ideal, for me at least.  lol

Not Poundland, but the Works:

Works are selling packs of "Wooden Coasters", £2 for a pack of 6.  2mm MDF, 100mm square with rounded corners; should be invaluable for scenic, vignette or small vehicle bases. Warbases charge £1.95 for a pack of 4 that size!

Wilko has gone in to administration today so UK gamers get in quick and stock up anything you use from there. I have already been in and hoovered up a bag of 30mm washers, no 25mm ones left. No glue either, I guess that was one of the suppliers they hadn't paid.

Poundland have some more resin bits in, there’s some fence bits & park benches that aren’t that good & a bit oversized but they also have some Tori (?) gates (I think that’s what they are called, I’m a bit ignorant on that stuff) for £1 each, which I thought was ok, bases are a bit wonky but easy to sort out.
So I bought a couple for Pulp Alley games.
