Title: Traveller S Scout
Post by: Braz on April 23, 2014, 09:35:27 PM
Unpacked this project which I had shelved and started fiddling on again. Partially remotivated by this thread: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=33153.0  Thanks Faust23!

28mm scale made from 3mm (1/8inch) hardboard, posterboard, dowelling, styrene, etc.

No landing gear yet. You can see lowered stairs that accesses the main airlock with my ubiquitous 28mm Copplestone figure for scale. With damage to the nose that will be repaired when hull plating added.

View of the air raft/vehicle bay that opens both from the top and bottom with two access hatches from inside.

Before I get jumped on by purists the internal layout is different than most S Scout layouts. Mainly as the original layout is kind of boring for gameplay; one corridor with rooms on the sides. With this layout there are several ways to get in and  around the ship despite it's small size: cargo hatch, main air lock, emergency airlock, air raft bay, roof hatch, lowerdeck corridor, air shaft, cargo bay stairs.

The bridge area needs to be rebuilt due to a measurement error. You can see the secret compartment next to the air raft bay.

Lots of the internal detailing is done already and ready to be glued in place once painting is done. From left to right the avionics bay which can be converted to a lowberth bay or regular berth with drop-in modules and the emergency airlock (cutout circle); the main airlock; lavatory in blue; two berths in cream colour; across from that the secret cargo bay.

Enough room for 3 cargo containers. Eventually a drop in on one side will allow a cargo pod to be replaced with two passenger berths. Medical bay in bottom left corner beside the air raft bay.

Marvellous! This WIP has probably doubled my interest in traveller.  :D Seeing a floor plan worked out like this is just inspiring. And I like the multi path layout you have made.

A 15mm starship something like the S Scout has been on my "things I want to build someday" list since the late 90s; it's been six or eight years since I last did any 15mm SF gaming at all but I still find myself turning possible designs over in my head and wondering how buildable they'd be!

Looking forward to seeing this progress; the work so far looks very clean-cut and neatly done.

Thanks all. One of the iconic ships from my childhood that just needed to be built.

@NurgleHH: Yes either the Beowulf Free Trader or the Empress Far Trader but only once this is done. Or possibly a Firefly. Nothing on the size of Akula's Battlestar I hope (although I did draw up some plans for one) lol

Engines need to take up more space IMO (ship plans that treat every cubic foot of interior volume as crew space are a pet-peeve of mine), but it's a badass project and looks great! Very inspiring.

Maybe the engines are super efficient, like transistor radios versus tube radios...

IIRC, a huge portion of the volume should actually be taken up by the reaction mass (water). But it's been quite a few years since I last designed a Traveller ship...

I do understand that modeling parts of the ship figures have no access to is not very interesting, and the error of proportions may very well be coming from the original deck plans. This may very well be something we'll just have to accept to get the model on tabletop in any reasonable size.

Whether its completely accurate is irrelevant.  She's a thing of beauty  :-*

Traveller handwavium :D : grav plates, reactionless drives, etc. but most of the missing "propulsion" space should be the fuel tanks , which as unplayable space is not really necessary to model, instead of having bigger engines.  I included quite a bit of fuel tankage which will be more evident once painted. There is also the big compromise of making this a playable piece where rooms and corridors are larger to accommodate based figures and massive clunky hands.

The volume/dimensions are quite close to the given specs as discussed on many Traveller boards (at 1 inch=5ft IIRC as can't find my notes).

Thanks for all the comments. All feedback welcome.

I distinctively remember adding fuel/reaction mass when I last designed a Traveller ship (admittedly about 25 years ago), but it could just that I was making a lower-TL ship... I can't recall the S-scout stats. I built one of them rock-ships because I found the idea appealing at the time.

Anyway, great work and I'm all for making it playable.

Sorry, mostly stuck with 'me too'-itis!  :o

Will say word on the tankage; takes a heck of a lot of space in the old designs, and old Go players know how deceptive in size the outer band can be.  ;)

Uncomfortably thin walls twixt thee and liquid H2...  lol

I'm not at all familiar with traveller, although I've heard mention of it many times. But that ship is pretty awesome!

What it reminds me of though, is the original Elite PC game, for which I designed my own ship back in the eighties (only pen and paper though; I never was a codemonkey :D ) and that ship had the same basic shape as your S Class Scout.

But then again; most ships in the Elite universe were wedge-shaped, with a diamond cross-section anyways. Must have had something to do with the cinematic succes of that other wedge-shaped spaceship back when... ;)

Great project at any rate; I'm sure many of us would like to do something similar, but you're doing it! 8)

I'll be watching with interest...

Great Scott! That's going to be an insanely nice model once complete - noticed it was still a WIP and looks great already. Thanks Andy for posting the eye candy. "Helps" he asks, Cripes, am I going to have to retrofit led lighting inside now? :D

@Damas Yes there will lots of little detail greebies and conduits.

Camera battery dead and can't find the charger so no pics now. :(

I've no doubt that others will cry foul, but the scout was always THE Traveller ship to me. Certains, it was the beginner's, and the fluff made it doubly so. It was about the most common Imperial ship design, used for exploration, and older ones were cycled into the private sector both to recoup Imperial expenses AND encourage entrepreneurship. It was the ship the player, after having a dice-generated career, most likely in the Imperial Navy, to buy (on credit) and go forth and adventure.

Of course, cramped, lacking amenities, and terribly shy on useful space, the model you should be desperate to trade up from.  lol

Possibly, but the extremely limited computing power of the home machines of that era was also a factor. That was also why that early flight sim on the speccy had very vulcanesque planes as enemies...

...a triangle has only three lines to draw.

Hmmm... looks like someone has put a 3-D printer to good use:

just for the record the new mongoose trav is really really great. I think its the only version that works perfectly. (I have played every version too except the new t5 which from all accounts is a mess.)
Turns out I got my hands on the base book in a bundle some time ago, the PDF's normaly are pretty expansive. Looking trough it now, it looks simple ish but in a good way. In a hey, I can run this from the get go way.

Which brings me to the next idea. How do people feel about doing a play by post traveller 4th game?

Did a double check, what I have is the mongoose one. I'm a bit new to traveller.  :D lol

Well, good to know the version I happen to have is considered the best one?  :D Actually now that I think about it is there a hammers slammers book for this version? Now that I am getting more into traveller I'm curious about that setting as well.

Got my hands on book3: scout. I am beginning to see what you mean with inconsistencies in these books.  >:( Nothing huge but still those small things that two people will interpret in different ways with very different results. Probably need to pop over to Mongoose website for a FAQ or something.
