A bit of a late start on this one but now I know which route I'm going to take in building it, it shouldn't take too long.
Basic start for now, lot of bluefoam sculpting to, more to follow :)
Foundry Imperial Chinese for scale

Why?
Probably because he has not started anything in that period yet and intends to do EVERYTHING!

Clever use of that coaster, by the way.

Good start. :D

Thanks chaps, more to follow over the weekend :)

Won't those pins be a bit dangerous? lol
Watching with interest, I need one of these, please post detailed plans including dimensions and a pdf pattern that we can all print out and use. :D

Plans? Plans? Nooooo, don't do them ;D

It's a great looking model, but I have absolutely no use for it so I won't be buying one. :)
-
Building from scratch is best done without plans to get in the way of all those mistakes....ummmm...happy little accidents that make any model just a little bit better. :D
This may inspire me to build a tower in 15mm/18mm.
-
The lack of plans shows: the stairs have been built on the wrong elevation, they don't lead to a door!

Just start cutting and gluing! NWF towers were all one off, ramshackle affairs. Just cut the side's at a slight angle so you get that slightly sloped effect to the walls.
I think Mr. Bibbly's is looking too tidy entirely, but I trust he'll distress it before the end. ;)
-
:) Thanks chaps, your comment shave given me much amusement :D

You need to watch that... ;)

Phah!

Started on the lower stone work today but at this moment I'm not convinced as of yet. I'll get a coat of paint on it later today and have another look.

The line on the left handside has been filled and some of the stones have had a bit of filler added to them to bring them proud of the main surface.
There will be a rough brick second story to go on that will lift off for interior access.

Hmmm...
Think it will look better with a bit of plaster on it here and there :)

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking as well. Nearly dry enough to paint now so we'll see in a couple of hours.

I think the stonework looks good; it retains a nice, convincing random coursework to it without being too random rubble. The only thing I'd say is that the corners look better (at least to me) where there is a larger or thicker stone, it seems to carry the mass better, if that makes sense (though it could also be seen as localised repairs)?
Bits of plaster and mortar repair would indeed look good. You could go for the 'over plastered' quick repair in some areas and a neater pointed repair in other areas to convey a sense that many hands had worked on it over the years. I don't need to be offering you advice though as I learn from you everyttime you put one of these threads up!
-
You're right Steve although the picture I'm going from has corner quite similar to what I've got here but I know what you mean, it doesn't feel quite right.
I've got some plaster on some of it and gave it a coat of a thin plaster wash and it does improve it quite a bit. The funny thing is I'll have to be more careful painting this than a normal model to get the feel right :)

It's still a but damp so painting soon :)

You, Sir, are an artist !!
Love the 'random' stonework.

Thanks chap

Paul, stop being silly ;D
Painted the first wall and it has kind of worked but I'm not 100% fully convinced as of yet but I'll let the client decide (who's on holiday but might be able to pop by and have a look) :)
Believe it or not, there are 12 different colours in that stone work, not including washes and drybrushes o_o
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/Terrain/4BDC50AD-9D40-4A36-9227-B79AEDA0FB04_zps7ve3swa6.jpg)

I think with a bit more weathering (when it's all done) and some growies it'll be alright :)
cheers
James
-
Well I think I know complete utter crap when I see it.
And this ain't it. ;)
-
I like that a lot! The painting really makes the stonework pop. Regarding the corners, you know this better than I do with these things but it's often odd that something that looks fine at 1:1 scale doesn't quite look right when reduced. You'll no doubt know too that it's a big part of Japanese landscape design (if I recall my lectures correctly!). You could get that small stone effect from repair work to a degraded stone, with smaller sections put in to fill the gaps.
Anyway, I'm rambling! It's a lovely build James, the random coursework is outstanding.
-
I agree with some of the earlier comments - a great little tower full of character. In fact it has tempted me to build one of my own.
Thanks for posting the images.
Tony
-
I think it looks great
-
Coming along nicely, mate.
I like the differing shades used.
8)
Paul, stop being silly ;D
Shan't!
;D
Anyway: Ya missed a bit.
:D
-
Looking very nice James. Stonework has come out a treat. :D
-
It looks really good, its also great to see the step by step photos - it really helps show how to go about this kind of scratch build. The addition of the plaster is very effective, and its great to see it step by step.
When you mention plaster wash - is this watered down polyfilla, or plaster of paris, or something else?
-
It's for me and I think it's coming on bloomin' great!!!
Which reminds me, Now I'm back from my holidays I must slap some dip on the dozen base coated Sikhs, dozen base coated Gurkhas and finish base coating the next 20 Pathans so there's someone to fight over it when it's all finished. :D
-
It's for me and I think it's coming on bloomin' great!!!
That's always a good sign :)
Well, all the lower stonework is done, now to move onto the upper story. I've got a resin brick sheet I'm going to use as it'll be easier than blue foam. I'll coat it in a filler/pva/water mix so the texture will fit better with the lower floor :)

I'll be watching this thread with great interest! 8)
What mix did you use for the plaster work mate?
And in what proportions?

Dunno..... ;) :)
Though I do wish that I had trained as a modeller at Uni rather then doing fine Art!! I actually had the choice too! Doh!! lol

Thanks chaps :)

It was a test to see if I was happy with the process as a whole :)

Really like the look of this, great work. :-*

What have you got planned for the top of the building?

Going by some of the suggestions he made regarding my last effort, it will either be a swimming pool or a tennis court.... :D

;D ;D ;D
Have you had a few sir? lol
Darrell.
-
Thanks again chaps :)
I don't think the Pathans of the 19th cen would've had tennis courts...
The top 'floor' will be a rough brick and painted a reddish clay colour with some sort of brushwood roof as of yet to be decided.
cheers
James
-
Looking very good thus far :D
-
I love all the work and gorgeous modeling. I don't, however, remember ever seeing a reddish brick anywhere in the area of the Northwest Frontier. Could just be my faulty memory, but I feel a dun or khaki baked clay might be more correct.
-
I just see that you should smoothen the edges of your base. It looks better on the tabletop. Now it will look like a boardwalk or a step.
Everything else is luvely.
Ahhhhh....thanks for enlightening me.... Chamfering is the word :)
-
The bricks aren't that red in real life :? I can certainly tone them down though, I though a bit of contrast might be nice :)
For some reason I completely missed chamfering the base ::) it can still be done though :D
cheers
James
-
Dont forget the swimming pool!
:D
-
Well, after some time and agonising over which route to take for the upper floor (some of which were started and abandoned) I've finally started :D
The end is in sight...
The blue foam does tend to gather the light somewhat making photos tricky (especially to a numpty like me :) ).
The dark strip between the foam bricks and existing stone work is lithographic tape and the first layer of wood glue won't stick to it so it will enable the brick upper story to be removeable but hopefully keep the general shape of the top of the stone.
cheers
James
-
Very clever and looks great too.
But that is a lot of work there to make that removable.
-
But that is a lot of work there to make that removable.
Kind of, I suppose most of the work went into choosing the right bricks.
When it's done it'll get a thin coat of glue and filler to help seal it and when that's dry it'll be really sturdy :)
Worth it in the end I think ;)
cheers
James
-
But the fact that it can be made removable increases it's flexibility and in my head, it's value. I like it.
-
Last post before the working week destroys my hobby time again lol
The upper floor is about half way there and I'll add a couple of windows soon.

I tentatively tried to remove the upper from the lower and the little amount of corner I got up looked promising. It won't be removed until the coat of filler/glue/water has gone on and had lots of time to dry, although in this heat that should be a couple of hours lol
cheers
James

Yea, we've heard that before... ::)

I've heard about this, it's the wizard's tower, right? That's just a story though isn't it? I mean the photo looks real enough but it's an obvious fake, you can see it's just a guy in a wizard's tower suit.
;D
The watchtower is looking great though.
-
Got the upper floor construction done. There's a bit of a slope for the roof that will be made from a pile of bristles I got from Japan (fine bamboo I think).

I like the very uneven way it's built. Gives it lots of character.

Lot of hard work done extremely well,a joy to watch come to life.

But won't something that size count towards the occupancy rate?
The stonework is really quite superb. It looks like you've individualy lain each block! (you haven't have you? :D). I'm looking forward to seeing this painted.

Only kidding mate. ;)

Thanks gents :)
Yes, all the blocks were painstakingly applied by hand ;D
And I must admit, I really enjoyed it :)

Really pretty piece of work. Richard
-
Jeez this looks damn great!
-
The small bricks work well bibbles! :-* :-* Any plans for a pebble and plaster combo like the 'spanish townhouse' crafted by Blockhaus? A bit of that material could help feather the seam between levels too.
I like how the tower breaks unevenly, very crafty sir.
Cheers
Matt
-
I like how the tower breaks unevenly, very crafty sir.
Yep, from an engineering perspective it works brilliantly as well as an aesthetic one.
You will have to give us a recap on just how you made the bricks James :)
Darrell.
-
James, wonderfull work of art both scratchbuilt and painting. :-* :-*
Did you use white glue to glue the separated bricks or some polyuretane special glue?
-
Thanks chaps :)
I might plaster over some of it but I quite like just the brick finish.
Just normal wood glue for the sticking.
cheers
James
-
Made a start on the roof today. Simple wooden frame and I'll stick some scale rushes on the top.

Beautiful progress.
I have to ask - did I miss the rest of the Pathan/Afghan project, or is this tower "the beginning"?
-
James, what have you mixed with the paint to get the rough texture?
Darrell.
-
Very cool. Can't wait to see it finished.
-
This really is very inspirational. Very similar construction techniques in the Radfan and I do need a village.
-
Are those coffee stirrers?
lol lol lol

Thanks chaps :)
This is just a commission. I have some of the Foundry Pathans as I had an idea to do it a while ago, but not any more.
The textured paint is just wood glue, wall filler and fine sand.
lol lol lol
Piss off back to Devon >:D

WOW!! I go away for a bit of a holiday and come back to see this!! You have been very busy James!!
I love it! Absolutely brilliant!
You'll be pleased to know that I have just ordered some new 2nd Afghan War Artizan Brits to attack it and that a unit each of Sikhs and Gurkhas are both being highlighted as we speak...40 more Pathans are also awaiting base coats, so things are moving this end too... :D
-
Good to hear Andy :)
Another week and we'll be done :D
cheers
James

Finished the roof and although it's mainly conjecture on my part it seems to have worked :?

Nice job on this tower.
Great scratchbuilder you are mate.
Love your work and eye for details. :o
-
Nice work Jim :-* Actually pretty close to the commission I'm thinking about(that I mentioned a while back...),just with a more European flavour.I'll send you a PM within the next week :)
-
Looking good - effort well rewarded.
However, small point of criticism - the upper walls are imho a little too pink. May be your thing though.
-
You are a credit to the Hobby, your passion for detail is amazing,do not paste over the brickwork,is my vote.
-
Looking good James. :D

I'm guessing that's just a basecoat for now. James will probably be researching Pathan brick and weathering effects!

If he isn't doing the research as I type this, I'm truly disappointed :(
;)
Looking fab James! Now that beautiful watchtower needs a nice cliffside to sit on :)
-
Many thanks for the replies chaps :)
Yes, the brick is just undercoated and will be various hues of red/brown/grey.
cheers
James

Oh, I thought it was Suffolk camouflage.. ;)
I've changed my mind now, I need one of these. :D

Finished the outside (apart from the door) :)
Believe it or not, there are 12 different shades in the upper brickwork, you can't bloody tell though :? lol

130 square meters appt... best part at Kyber with sun roof and running water.... from the walls.
I`ll take it :)

I only count ten. ;)
Lovely finished item sir, as to be expected. :D
I'll join the queue for MkII.

Lovely work, Jimbo! :-*
The roof kind of reminds of the one I had in Plymouth (Deevoon). Or more precis, yours is better done...

Many thanks for the replies gents :)

Wow!!!
That's a mighty impressive piece of work!! Brilliant!!
I look forward to receiving it (and my son is also mightily impressed - he's demanding that we play a NW Frontier game as soon as it arrives!!! :D)
Am now even more spurred on to finish those Sikhs and Gurkhas on the painting table!!

Top work James. Turned out very well.

Amazing!

That really is rather good - now do one in 15mm lol lol lol lol lol lol
