Title: John Carter gaming history...........
Post by: The Dozing Dragon on July 20, 2014, 11:30:18 AM
I posted a small article on my blog that was published in the currently defunct OSFMapa Journal number 2. Miniatures and gaming.....

Curse you!  >:(

I was SO smug with my copies of Warriors of Mars and Barsoomian Battle Manual. I suppose now I'll have to start hunting the Adventure Gaming Handbook.

Thanks for the track through the memories; a few suppliers I wasn't aware had done Barsoom...

Impressive!

As for the other Heritage book, I know I've seen and held same. Sad, scary thing, I may actually have a copy somewhere...

This getting old... ;)

Good stuff! There are a lot of old minis there that I was not familiar with. I have an unabashed love of the Mars series. In fact I originally wrote Fantastic Worlds (http://oddmanproductions.com) to be a John Carter system. It eventually grew to include most of pulp sci-fi ideas, but it was born from my ERB passion. I'd love to have a copy of the old Gygax version.

As far as minis, we are spoiled for choice these days. Bronze Age's line is amazing as is Parroom Station's.

Thanks for that, a few minis I had no idea existed.

I'm sure I've missed some lines out but it was just putting the article out as published back then. Shadowkings mentioned some Hinchliffe larger scale.......now those I would like to hear about!

Nice round up.

Actually, our characters pack has an "Earthman Gone Native" and a "Martian Princess" in it...

Say, maybe some of you might know this, but there were a larger series of JC-themed miniatures (54-60mm or so?) released in the 80's I think. They were actually sculpted to a very high standard, but for the life of me I remember who made them or what the line was called. Does anybody else remember these figures or hand any idea what I'm talking about?

I'm not aware of any myself but there's a lot of ranges out there that appeared for a short while and might not have been advertised or on general release? Tony has mentioned that Hinchliffe had 2 large figures sculpted for the US market and he saw the masters back in the day - one may have been the Heritage Tars Tarkas but he remembers another John Carter figure (54mm) that doesn't appear to have seen a release. Some plastic doll type figures were released for the toy market but they were pretty poor overall. If you can remember anything else please post.

Archive also did a 4 armed green alien in their alien gladiators pack. I have a couple of them. I also have the Hinchcliffe green martian & a few of the reds. And I have several if the Heritage John Carter series figures. I also have a lot of the Rafm & Parroom Station figures but they are a different back story for Mars. I will dig my stuff out & get some photos for you.  ;)

Mainly I'm remembering a series of Dejah Thoris-like figures, one of which also included a big cat of some kind? It was also a fairly large range.

It's been a while, so it's hard to recall the details.

I would guess you are thinking of the Pheonix Miniatures Atlantis range. There are a number of pieces pictured on the Lost Minis WIKI;

It would be great if it wasn't this range as I would have another to find!

I am 90% sure that's the line. Thanks!

I was tempted by a couple of those figures in the past, but I wouldn't really have much of a use for 54mm except as giant statues. Some of them sure are nice though!

Concerning Perth, didn't they also do the Starfleet Wars character figs for awhile? Whomever it was, pricey, but REALLY tempting.

If they do bring back Barsoom, don't hesitate as I did.

Money would be more an issue now, but I could have afforded them then, if with pain.

Excellent article matey. I had high hopes for a boom in Barsoomian gaming when John Carter was announced. Alas, it was not to be.  :'(

Edits made:  A Barsoom or Venus supplement for IHMN would even be acceptable...

Gracias,

Glenn

Well, we should be getting some more minis eventually. The kickstarter for Tin Man's expansion has been slowed down, but I'm sure they'll finish eventually. Tin Man probably makes the best Tharks anywhere.

Thank you for posting this.  John Carter is my boyhood hero.  I really didn't think the movie was that bad to be panned the way it was.  I am going to hold onto my Barsoom Battle Manual.

I thought it was actually quite solidly decent and fairly faithful (far more so than the Lord of the Rings trilogy  ::) ), though extremely poorly marketed.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie but got the impression that the director was out of the Hollywood good books for some reason...can't remember where I read stuff about it. One way to guarantee a failing movie is to be out of the in crowd over there I believe.

I didn't like the feathery flyers or the whole Zodanga walking city thing, but I believed the whole Matai Shang/priests controlling the whole solar system was inspired. It gave a better rationale for transporting between the planets and made gave excellent potential for intrigue and a story arc across sequels. I was so disappointed it was cancelled after waiting years for a John Carter film.

I agree the walking city was silly. They should have just had canals. Great film though a future classic i think. Seemingly disney wanted to drop it as they were negotiating to make Star Wars.

I suspect it may well be a future classics. I wish some proper Barsoom stuff was available in 15mm. I have Peter Pig WW2 but their John Carter range doesnt do it for me, similarly with Martian Empires. I wish Khurasan would dabble with a bit of Barsoom.

Hey DD, picked these up at a show yesterday. Figure they are Hermitage based on your file. Think the one on the middle is a white ape?

Those are English ones by Hinchliffe. All on the Lost Minis WIKI - on the iPod otherwise I'd post the link. Nice find!

Yeah, I was pleased. Old game store in Toronto has the owner retiring and he was liquidating. Thanks for the speedy reply!

Back on the laptop......I've put most up on the WIKI including a couple of painted ones. There is still the missing mystery code of SF15......I would dearly love to know what happened there.....

Was that Crossed Swords? I think he's been closed for some months, if not a year.

Yes. He's been liquidating what's left at some shows
