Title: The Great War Painting Club - 100 Miniatures
Post by: Plynkes on July 28, 2014, 02:10:45 PM
One hundred years ago today, the July Crisis culminated with the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia, plunging the world into the conflict that would become known as The Great War, or First World War. To commemorate that momentous occasion, we present:

The Great War Painting Club

So once more it's time to get your painting helmets on and help us with a big push to get to one hundred figures.  Will it take us four bitter years, or as Captain Blood put it, will it all be over by Christmas?

LAFers, Your Forum Needs You!

I'm sure I don't need to go over the rules of these things again, but then again I better had, as nobody pays any attention to them anyway:

Good luck, everyone. It's just about time. We go on my whistle.

The badge, for all you badge-hunters out there. Comes in two flavours, with and without the lettering. Use whichever you prefer:

I was afraid of making him too ragged for fear of overdoing it and spoiling the figure, but now I think I didn't make him nearly tatty enough!

Wonderful idea.

A soldier with grass in his hat...will be difficult to beat!   ;)

Well, it was fashionable in 1914-1918... in 1939-1945, everybody was doing it so it slowly became less and less trendy... ;)

Number 2 - 10mm German A7V

Here is a Pendraken 10mm A7V. This tank is about 50mm long and 25mm high.   The base is 80mm x 35mm.

Good work Mick, I was thinking about painting up the same model, as I undercoated it the other weekend.

I also have a bunch of British Artillery as well, that is ready to go.

A great start to the club. I might have to see if I can paint up the remaining uhlan from my LPL entry (I had 6 but only painted the necessary 5 to save time!). At least it's undercoated.

How do you add a badge and where do I find it?

The badges are right there on the first post, Mick. Simple way is just to link to the badge in your signature just as if you were posting a picture normally. Depending on your browser there usually is an option to grab the link if you right-click on the picture.

But in case you have any trouble with that these are the links:

http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/18/163_03_07_14_9_27_30_1.jpg (http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/18/163_03_07_14_9_27_30_1.jpg)
(with lettering)

http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/18/163_03_07_14_9_27_30_2.jpg (http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/18/163_03_07_14_9_27_30_2.jpg)
(without lettering)

However, once people have a lot of badges they often prefer to use some image-editing software to splice all their badges together into a single image, host it themself on some image-hosting site (or in their own LAF gallery) and link to that instead. I think that's because there are a limited number of images allowed in the signature so once you are in a number of clubs it becomes impossible to display them all unless you combine them. Think that's it, but am not totally sure as I've never gone in for images in my signature personally.

Just a little reminder, can club members please put the number of their entry somewhere in their post. Helps keep track of how far we have got towards the hundred minis.  :)

Hi folks,

that's perfect timing since I finished my first two WW1 figures yesterday:
Painting them was great fun. The sculpts are very well and the figures are full of character. For the choice of colours my special thanks to Mark Hargreaves. Most of you will know his blog "Over open Sights" or his presece here. anyway he always and the excellent miniatures here and there. Mark is a very gifted painter as well as a kind and very helpful chap. He's offering some painting guides on his blog and was kind enough to answer me some further questions. So my colour choices base on his tutorial with only a few replacements for colours I didn't have.
As usual I used Vallejo Model Colors and some inks and washes from various manufacturers. For the first time I didn't use spray varnish. Instead I employed Marabu Mattlack (matt varnish) from the paint pot. It was very easy to apply and dryed cristal clear. A really good alternativ to the spray cans with which I didn't make good experience only.

I hope you like them.

Cheers
Stefan

Queen's Own Dorset Yeomanry, 1916-17.

I hope these two count.... I finished them both on 23 July.... five days before the Austrians declared war on the Serbs. Musketeer Miniatures BUF/Yeomanry figures with a Woodbine head and added greenstuff feedbags and blankets.

This thread is really inspriring.
Actually this miniature was planned as a casualty marker for my WW1 games.
I think a small vignette suits better and can also be used as an objective marker.

Priceless, these guys!
This one, the second from the right, what a mien :)

I was more taken by the one on the right who looks at first glance to not so much have grass on his hat but a rambling bush on his back lol

Brilliant pictures guys, this might give me a bit of impetus to paint some of those Woodbine Design figs I've had for a few years

To be perfectly honest I have no idea what kind of pistol he is suppose to be holding. It should be an M1911 .45 semi-automatic, it looks closer to the M1917 Revolver used by the US Army and rarely by the US Marine Corps. I kind of think it looks more like some kind of Ray Gun.

I have totally mis-identified this miniature. It came out of my pile of USMC from Brigade Games but its actually from Great War Miniatures pack US001 US Officers and NCOs. So he is correctly holding an M1917 revolver instead of a .45. I had forgotten that I was using a number of packs of Great War Miniatures as fill ins for things I couldn't get from Brigade Games. The revolver still looks awful.

Well done on a mediocre figure.  & it's the weapon (?) that makes it so.

His holster is clearly an M1916 for the 1911 .45 he ought to be brandishing.
& his sidearm clearly will not fit inside.

The abortion he's attempting to hold looks most like a Nagant revolver, given the stick like grip his hand is wrapped around, sorta, kinda...

Methinks the sculptor has a less than passing familiarity with actually using a pistol.
I'll agree it's more raygun than revolver, & it's NO automatic.

Perhaps I'm being uncharitable, but others get it right, & there's absolutely ZERO shortage of examples & reference material.
Given the way the hand is posed around something too small to be a magazine fed weapon this was designed this way, not a mis-cast.
Tis a pity, the balance of the fellow seems spot on.

By the look of him he'd benefit from a 2 hand swop.  & there are plenty of hands holding 1911 .45s to choose from, cannibalisation not required,
lots are offered as spares.

Actually M1917 revolvers were limited standard, or substitute standard, weapons.  Widely issued certainly, we couldn't produce 1911s fast enough, & doubtless some preferred a wheelgun over an automatic in the mud of the trenches, but only absent available Colt Automatics.  The figure's holster nonetheless remains an m1916 for the 1911, NOT capable of holding a big revolver.  The M1917 holsters, butt forward or conventional, are quite distinct, and not fully flapped.

I continue to concur the "weapon" is a miserable excuse for a sculpt.

Valerik

pretty picky about his .45s

EDIT: Updated reply to reflect the new info

He is not your standard American Doughboy with that helmet. He could be are Harlem Hellfighter though, in which case he would be a black soldier still a member of the US Army but serving in a segregated unit with the French. The facial features of the casting at least suggest that he might be black.

Thanks, H. The quote comes from an officer of the Mountain Battery, who while walking down a bush trail came under fire from a German MG. Diving into the bush for safety he landed squarely on top of a leopard, which luckily jumped up and bolted at the indignity of being sat on like this. But that was the final straw after all the heat, sickness and fatigue, and he declared East Africa to be 'no country for pukka soldiering.'  :)

Added. Your intention was to paint a doughboy so it would be extremely petty to disallow it.

Ah, un Cadeau!
Allons-y, allons-y!

Hastily painted and assembled French MMG. I made the mistake of baking it in the oven when the base was drying... everything turned yellow due to the varnish reacting somehow. So a quick afterbrush was necessary.

I actually started this force as part of my 2013 Army Painters thread, but never finished. The miniatures were churned out at quite a pace, but still I failed to deliver.

I have been contemplating WWI since 2001... and now when it's finally in season I can't find the enthusiasm! So my hordes of WWI figures are stood unpainted on shelves or lying in boxes.

Russian Sergeant сержант of the famous shock troops. This little fellow was sculpted by my all time favourite artist Mike Owen for the Storm in the East Range by Brigade Games. While the Adrian helmet wasn't all that popular with the russian soldier and definitely wasn't available in sufficient numbers I think it's reasonable to equip my elite tsarist russian/ white russian troops with the one or other to better distinguish from the regular footsloggers. The rather unusual weapon is a German Mauser C96 (cal. 7,63mm or 9mm Parabellum) sporting the so called "Anschlagbrett/ -schaft" (broomhandle). It wasn't as popular as the famous Pistole 08 or better known as "Luger" with thte German Army but saw widespread use in the tsarist and later bolshewik armies.

He's a great figure. I've painted him too - those FG figures are a real pleasure to paint (mainly because they're so bloomin' huge  :)) Love the alternative head as well.

Wonderful work Scarab.  Highly evocative of the conflict, and nice to see representation of a comparatively little-modeled aspect of the Great War.  For those of us for whom the Grossvater's Krieg means the Austro-Hungarian side of the conflict, thanks.

Not sure if I remember to post daily but I'll try my best :-)

You aren't required to post daily, SP. One entry is all that is required to be a member of the club. The daily thing is a limit, not a requirement, so that one person can't post a hundred entries on day one and end the club before it has even really started. Check out the rules on the first page if you aren't sure about anything. And if you still aren't sure (which is easily possible as it was me that wrote them  :)) you can PM me or post a query on this thread.

I have been quietly looking for something, anything, that is in my collection that is WW1. So far the closest I have gotten is some 1/1200 stuff that visually looks like WW1 (but it is really Dystopian Wars models).

I have some kind of French cruiser, some teeny British biplanes, a couple of tanks, and some gunboats that I think are British or French. They look more historical than most of the stuff from that line.

I was wondering if they would be acceptable for this? If no, I'll keep looking for something to paint.

Couldn't really say, as I'm not really familiar with these. If they look historical, then fine. If they look steampunky, best save them for when VSF or Weird War has its club.

Great entries!

I have a mini primed and partially base-coated frenchy sitting in line for painting that had to be postponed in order to get some units ready for a game the upcoming weekend, but from Monday I should be able to move it back into position to go over the top...

I just hope this won't be over 'til Christmas  ;)

No 60 - Brigade Models Dismounted Belgian Carabinier Cyclists

A head swap for the lewis gunner and the visor shaved off the kepi to represent the cap that was worn less detachable visor.

Known to the Germans as the "Belgian Rattlesnake" it must have been annoying for them at the time.

My camera work still needs loads of improvement as you can't see the highlights in the tunic.

No. 62 US "Marine" Rifleman w/ Rifle Grenade Launcher

Another one in my expanding force of Marines. As cast this is a US Infantryman, for me he is a US Marine Corps Rifleman. Identifiable at this point only because of his P1912/1917 Forest Green pants. Pershing would not allow the Marines to ship over replacement uniforms so they had to draw replacement clothing from Army stores. This gave a ragtag look to the Marines in the 4th Brigade, 2nd Division as replacement Marines came into the unit with their P1912/1917 uniform.

Well, I'm sure in 1915 there where some muddy spots at the Western Front.
But basically it's just matching the bases of the first batch.

In the meantime I've run out of my Khaki mixture and looking for alternatives I've come across an unopened pot of Citadel XV-88.
Result is this chap:

(http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m146/CiaphasCain_album/The%20Great%20War/C71FFB4A-5F87-499F-98CE-9D2DA9EE8C6B_zpsxdjnowlz.jpg) (http://s103.photobucket.com/user/CiaphasCain_album/media/The%20Great%20War/C71FFB4A-5F87-499F-98CE-9D2DA9EE8C6B_zpsxdjnowlz.jpg.html)

Just washed and re-highlighted. After a coat of matt varnish it looks rather convincing..
The paint has literally just dried and I've missed breakfast. So please accept it as No 64?

Cheers

No 67 - 15mm Irregular Miniatures Mark IV Male tank painted as a German Beutepanzer

Bought years ago and a very dated sculpt. With Battlefront's recent offerings I would not recommend these now. Lots of cleaning up, but once painted I was happy enough and they do have a certain charm.

The platoon was also my first attempt at using decal softer, no idea how I lasted so long without this product.

Nice work on the painting - but I see what you mean about the model!

Decal softener is great stuff - really makes the decals fit well, and you hardly use any at a time so a bottle lasts for ages.

Nice painting - the Brigade Models range contains beautiful sculpts (I have a dog cart too).

No 70 - 15mm Irregular Miniatures A7V Tank

Like the Mark IV this needed some TLC (Green Stuff and filing). I used hard highlights to give it some definition. And yes, I'm fully aware of the inaccuracies in the detail of the sculpts. But again, there's some old school charm in them and I finally got these painted!

Title: Re: The Great War Painting Club - 100 Miniatures
Post by: Sidney Roundwood on September 19, 2014, 04:05:35 PM
Thank you ladies and gents.  I'll take a picture of the command group from the side this evening.

One of the things which has really surprised me doing the late war French is how the differences in the heft and bulk and tall-ness of the various 28mm figures melt away once the figures are based up and painted.  Putting the Forgotten & Glorious figures side-by-side next to the Old Glory figures from out of their posted zip-loc bags looked odd at first.  They looked very different and strange bed-fellows.  Now, once painted, I don't tend to notice the differences.

@TooBoCoo:  I didn't use pigments on the bases.  I used water-based post paint from an art shop for most of the bases (the Louvre Acrylic line).  I did use pigments on the barbed wire (MIG Pigments' "Light Rust", mixed with Windsor & Newton acrylic flow improver).

I particularly like the crew, with all their different uniforms - which was apparently what they looked like as the crews were volunteers from all branches of the Belgium army.

As far as Albert I goes, I think rather than reserve the 100 slot for him at this late hour, we'll allow him as an extra "epilogue" figure to round things off, if Kane wants to paint him. Don't want someone missing out on the club and getting annoyed because one slot had been taken away at such late notice.

pnly 1 month (and a bit) to go then if somebody wants to paint him on the spot we can always provide for a painting station and the colours necessary. The end result can be posted via a mobile phone if somebody is willing to pick up on the idea.

Much depends on whether GWMs plan on releasing Mounted Jägers at some point, but at present, I'm aiming for a squadron of six castings to go with the Infantry Brigade and a regiment of twelve to go in the Cavalry Brigade. I'd rather that GWM sold the mounted jägers than face filing away all that detail on the Uhlan uniforms for the second regiment in the brigade though!

I'm planning to have dismounted figures to go with the Uhlan Regiment, but none for the squadron attached to the brigade.

I'm hoping (hint, hint) that the dismounted Uhlan MG crew (as well as the MG carriage) will also be released sooner rather than later  ;)

I suppose people are very welcome to show off their figures on the regular board too?

There are no rules to amount and state there...

I dont know what the incentive behind the rule is. But does it make sense to ignore it, just to ignore it?

 lol
sorry, I can't answer that question  :D
ignoring rules is part of my assets  ;)
and I despise obeying rules for the sake of rules....
I personally find the "underregulated" way it was run here quite appealing, and most of all, expedient. Which is the point of rules (IMHO), but I find it also acceptable that there might be other oppinions...

I could actually argue for posting singular miniature groups instead of them occupying singular entry slots, it gives more people the opportunity to post their work. With rules "obeyed", this club would have been long ago over.
I understand the idea is to have them all in one thread, so they can be compared and found more easily.

Well, I did notice the rule and then realised it wasn't being applied. So I cracked on and followed the precedent of treating each vignette as a single entry so as not to skew things  ;D

OK, you win the debate on account of life being too short.  ;D

Very true  :)

But, please remember the 'rule' is there because the intention of the original painting club concept was for a shared community project of 100 INDIVIDUAL miniatures, with up to one miniature per contributor per day, until 100 miniatures are achieved. The end. Seems easy and uncontroversial enough.
Presumably the reason most people don't stick to the rules, is because they haven't bothered to go to the front of the thread and read them.

Had people kept to the rules and posted one figure per day, rather than posting two, three, five at a time, we would have comfortably finished the club by now, and been able to move onto another one. Instead of which, it is limping oh-so-slowly home, and has almost fizzled out.
Pity.

I suspect before we run any further painting clubs, we will be revisiting the rules.

•   You may post only one miniature each day. And only one, not a few or a lot. We don’t want to get to "game over" too soon. (That said, several shots from different angles are acceptable, of course.)
•   Once entered, you don’t have to post every day. It’s perfectly sufficient to post just one single miniature at all in order to take part in the game and to become a member of our shiny Ancients Painting Club.
•   This is not about showing your collection of already painted stuff, so please do post only newly painted miniatures. We’re not in a hurry, so take your time.
•   If you want to present miniatures which are to be based in groups, it's fine to post them one by one without a finished base. A concluding picture of the final result would be nice, though.

I suspect that's the Great War board popularity that explain it take longer to reach 100 entries... not so much the number of figures per entry...but, rules are rules and must be followed  ;)

I take the rap for not enforcing the rules tightly. My bad. If people get some kind of kick of thinking they have somehow "beaten the system" I am quite happy to let them live in that little world if it makes them happy.

It's meant to be a bit of fun. No rush, and not worth getting in a tizz over.

Afraid I disagree Stephen. The painting club is like a game - a game organised for the amusement and participation of the members. And like all games, the person that creates the game is entitled to set the rules. Others are entitled to join in the game - or not. Or quite free to go off and start a different game of their own.
What we can't do, when freely choosing to play someone else's game, is complain about their rules 'constraining creativity'.

The rules have been flexed in this instance - and that's fair enough. That's Plynkes' choice as board moderator. I can understand people making multiple entries once the precedent has been set. That doesn't make Thorbjorn's observation wrong though.

It's an easy shot to equate 'rules' with 'pedantry'. I'm not sure you would be so happy with this forum if we threw away all the rules and just let nature and creativity take its course...

I wish Janner I had the time, but I don't at the moment as you know with the property an all.  I'm trying my best when I can to paint something for my Belgian 1914 project and the painting club has been an inspiration (Thanks to you an all) to motivate instead of pulling thistles out of the field. :-)

It's an easy shot to equate 'rules' with 'pedantry'. I'm not sure you would be so happy with this forum if we threw away all the rules and just let nature and creativity take its course...

Conflating my support for Plynkes flexible approach with a desire for anarchy is disingenuous of you, Capt B. I don't come to LAF for stick slinging, but to enjoy seeing great models, terrain etc.

On which note, some lovely additions to the club :-)

And conflating my perfectly reasonable support for the simple rules of this fun little group project with 'tight arses constraining creativity' and 'pedantry' was disingenuous of you. And a tad disproportionate?

Anyway, back on track - I like the sniper. Nice groundwork.

I'm sorry that you took the juxtaposition I set against how plynkes had actually run the club to date as aimed at you.

It wasn't: you were not mentioned in that post nor was it about you.

Given your own creative approach to this hobby, I'm surprised that you thought it could be. That said, my apologies again that you took it so.

I'm really liking these last few entries.

The 18pdr is ace, and the Belgian HMG team - I hadn't realised how similar to the german uniforms were some of the belgian ones - you tend to see photos of the chaps in the top hats.

No 90 - Great War Miniatures Belgian High Command

Well, they are in a sort of way. Using the Great War Miniatures French High Command I swapped heads with some Belgian Officers to make these lovely chaps available until Dave A designs them at some point in the future.

Can usually get away at this point with the officers as they tend to do their own thing with uniforms. However, I have closely look at these two miniatures as suitable for Belgian officers.

Officer on the left is from the 1st Chasseurs a cheval.

Officer on the right is from the infantry Line regiment.

All the best,

Helen

hm, maybe this is the right place and time to ask this question:
Ever since GWM released this set I wondered what kind of officer this specific one with the Attila-style jacket could be.
I know he has to be a senior officer, because the patrol jacket is very old-style, and he was first painted up as such, very much the way that some old photographs show certain generals - Foch or Joffre for instance.
But I was wondering what kind of officer he could represent otherwise? light cavalry colonel? or maybe even spahi?

could anyone tell please?

Here is number 96 (?).  Squeaking in at the last moment, story of my life.

I have been (very gradually) working on some Austro-Hungarians from the Italian campaign of 1917-18.  My great-grandfather was sent to the Piave with the Royal Engineers to help shore up the front after the Italian collapse at Caporetto, so it's a theatre of war I've always been fascinated by.

Here is that scion of Austrian nobility, OberLeut. Carolus Anselm Svetigar, Freiherr von Talus auf dem Skree.  He will command a platoon of the 1st Batt, 2nd Tiroler Kaiserjager regiment.  Alongside him is his faithful hound, Custozza.

Uniform is a mix of pre-war and wartime issue, which along with the brown helmets differentiates them nicely from the otherwise similar German troops.

The basing is supposed to represent the rocky terrain of the Carso Plateau, and is a change from the usual WW1 mud 'n filth.  All my Austrians are Scarab Miniatures, which I enjoy painting very much.

Pictures could have been better, the lighting was terrible today.

Being technically two miniatures, I hope this meets the requirements.  At any rate, the build inspired me to get working on this which means that's another stand completed for my Austro-Hungarians.

How would you work a " paint something someone challenges you to paint " club?  :?

All the best Aly

You paint a miniature and swap it. That could work I think.

All the best,

Helen

Hmmmmmmm!

The miniatures would have to be readily avaliable ...

Or...

We paint the same miniature .....

But then ....

Who chooses the miniature...

Darn it! You've got me interested ... lol

All the best. Aly

Well done everyone, and thanks for participating.

If anyone does have the Crisis 2014 King Albert figure, as per members request you can claim the final reserved spot by painting and posting him here.

Other than that we're done, and in time for the Armistice too.

Goodbye-ee, goodbye-ee,
Wipe the tear, baby dear, from your eye-ee!
Tho' it's hard to part I know,
I'll be tickled to death to go...

Ah, what pity! I nurtured a hope that I would have time to post a Austrian dummy mortar... (I am not jesting...)

Ah great minds!I was hoping to post my own dummy field gun and dummy crew set .But I'll wait until you've post your's as mine is a production set ,not bespoke.(also Simon forgot to bring it!).But I'm sorely tempted to add my own paint work to the mix.I've been lurking on the edge of the topic for some time, just haven't had the time to paint much for myself lately. But I've really enjoyed the topic and now I hooked.

Hi fellows,

awesome work everywhere in this threat. Many thanks for sharing your excellent results!
It was the first painting club I joined and was great fun to contribute some pieces of my humble work as well as following the efforts of you others.

As most of you will probably know tomorrow the end of WW1 will have its anniversary and throughout a lot of countries Remembrance Day will be celebrated. To honour this tradition I arranged some of the figures I presented here in a small vignette which I entitles "In Flanders Fields" and which I would like to present here outside the challenge:

Tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. GMT I'll put a complete post online on my humble blog:
Monty's Caravan (http://montys-caravan.blogspot.de/)

Lest we forget !

All the best
Stefan

No 71 - French Company Command, 1917 (28mm)

Here's my contribution to this very fine project - a French company command group, ready for the Nivelle Offensive, with attendant company musician and senior Sergent.  Figures from Brigade Games, Scarab and Forgotten & Glorious, all 28mm.

Just discovering this thread now.

This photo might be the best mini I have seen in the 30 years I have been in this hobby.

Fantastic work!
