In space, no one can hear you paint. But here, the results may be seen.
Welcome to the newest instalment of the LAF Painting Clubs:
101 Space Oddities
This is a rather informal, just-for-fun Painting Club. Everyone may enter, no prizes to be won, but if you participate, you may add the Future Wars Painting Club badge to your signature by using the code below:

The rules are simple:
- Every registered member of the LAF is free to join.
- You may post a single picture every 24 terran standard hours.
- You may post any number of pictures during the run of the painting club, as long as you only post a single picture every day
- The picture must feature a single-based wargaming or hobby miniature. For larger scales (20mm+), this also includes mounted figures, those riding a small vehicle etc. pp., or a single-based weapons team/heavy weapon IF ALL THE COMPONENTS ARE MOUNTED ON A SINGLE BASE.
For small figure sizes (15mm and less), the base may contain more than a single miniature, but the image may only contain a single base. ANY ENTRIES VIOLATING THIS RULE WILL BE REMOVED BY THE MODERATOR. - The theme is: Science Fiction, of the futuristic variety. Basically, anything goes, man, machine and monster, as long as it is a single item or a single base.
- The figure should, by all means, be newly-painted and unpublished so far in its present state.
- You may upload the image by using the Attachment function or by uploading it to an image hosting service and linking here.
- When posting, please look up the last number and number yours accordingly, e.g. if the last entry was entry #042, your entry is #043 and should be labelled as such.
- The contest will run until, after Entry 000 below, 100 entries have been posted (hence, 101 Space Oddities).
- I will collect all the entries in a gallery which was created for this painting club.
That's it so far. If you have questions pertaining to the rules, feel free to PM me or to post them in this thread; I will collect the questions in an FAQ post below and then remove the original posts to keep the thread neat and tidy.
To start things off, here's entry #000: "Spades" O'Dakker, Space Mercenary.

And here we go! Happy painting & posting!

THE Q&A POST
why only a single miniature?
The requirement is a single figure, first and foremost, because it has been so in the past for the other painting clubs. Second, to keep the entry barrier low, and third to allow them to be enjoyed/scrutinized/judged on equal terms. Although there are no prizes to be won.
Shouldn't people be putting their count number on their entries?
Yes, they should, for the sake of easier management and to avoid confusion. It must have slipped from the original post, but it has been added to the rules now.
Can I post a before/after picture of a figure? It's a repaint of a toy, so the before would give a bit of extra context.
I'm happy enough with just the "after", but thought I'd ask
Thanks
For this contest, just a picture of your finished piece, please. You may add a line or two describing what it used to be previously, and add a link, but no extra pics in the posts please.
Amalgamated: May I post a figure I painted in the past, but have never shown before?
Yes, if it has been unpublished, you may post it. The painting club is also about prodding folks to paint some new stuff, so newly-painted is certainly preferable. I have neither the time, the inclination or the means to check back if members republish an old thing, but it's a matter of honour and if someone finds out, they may point out the fact in a post.
what about newly converted figures? have had this Hasslefree hazmat figure for a while(painted and done) but recently sculpted a new arm and gave him a new gun?
Did you already show it on the LAF? If you did, this is not eligible. If it hasn't been shown, you may enter it, although we would prefer a completely new item.

Some great painting jobs and lovely miniatures there, a good start, well done everyone!
#006: Gargh Blaargh, Interstellar Bounty Hunter
What a biest! I might have him somewhere under my lead mountain, having bought him and another similar big alien thingy years ago from Bob Olley.

These are great so far. Its nice to see a number of non-human models too.

Very nice, but this club needs more 15mm!

#006: Gargh Blaargh, Interstellar Bounty Hunter
Lovely entries so far, but that Bounty Hunter beast is my very favourite! Hope to see many exciting miniatures like that here, and of course all newly painted! 8)
-
All right, time for some clarifications.
- 40k has explicitly not been excluded since a) there are a lot of nice figures from that part of the miniverse and b) I still like it. People are free to post whatever they want, as long as it's Sci-Fi, and as long as it meets the criteria outlined in the OP. Obviously, people may also disagree with some facets of that, but I'd prefer it to stay within civil lines.
- As per the rules, figures should be newly-painted and not have been seen here on the LAF. If that is not the case, I strongly ask people to paint up something new for the Club, since one of the reasons of the Painting Club format was always to stimulate some hobby work while being less formal and stressful than the LPL.
If I find people are consciously and egregiously posting old stuff, I'll remove those items and phrase the Newly-painted rule in a more mandatory fashion.
-
Another point that bears repeating:
ANY ENTRY may only consist of a single picture featuring a single base, containing either a single figure or a small unit, such as a heavy weapon and crew, a small vehicle and crew, or for smaller scales/sizes (<=15mm), a small (2-5) group of figures.
ANY ENTRY NOT MEETING THIS AND THE OTHER CRITERIA WILL BE MODIFIED OR REMOVED.
-
Here we go again!
Time to dig out a few minis that has been waiting for ever for this event to take place ;)
Spiffing entries so far, I'll better get my act together to not lower the standards :)

This is why I enjoy the Painting Clubs so much. My painting is not up to much compared to a lot of people who post on here, but I feel comfortable posting on LAF as people are usually pretty friendly and humour is an important part of the Forum. The Painting Clubs make me paint figures I otherwise would not paint, and that's got to be a good thing. On this one, I had to read through the Future Wars board to see what miniatures people were posting and whether I had to buy a figure to enter or not (I am happy to buy the odd figure I will probably never use in gaming). I normally only paint Pulp although I'm just starting out in F & IW. I do have quite a few Dr. Who minis unpainted and I might try and paint one of those for entry as well. That's another good thing, making me paint figures that are right at the bottom of my priorities.
Keep up the good work with the Painting Clubs!

Another point requiring clarification:
While there is a certain overlap, "Sci-Fi" in this context does not cover Weird Wars (there's a different board for that, with a different Painting Club to come in the future) or Postapocalyptic themes (there already was a Painting Club for that).
Some exceptions may be made for some items from post-apocalyptic settings if they are clearly of the Science-Fiction variety, such as suitably-futuristic robots (e.g. Claptrap above, or the various robots from the Fallout franchise), but the mere fact that a post-apocalyptic setting takes place in the future doesn't make it Sci-Fi per se.
As for Weird Wars, that theme will get its own Painting Club in 2015.

That is the best thing about these painting clubs, finding stuff that is outside of your 'normal' catchment zone.

I have had this limited edition Studio McVey resin figure assembled and primed with the odd base colour on for quite a while now the current club has prompted me to get it done. As it is a display piece I put the base on a round MDF base covered with chequer plate plasic card with Green Stuff extra goo added, I am not sure about the paint job on the goo, I may redo this.

#39 6mm Adeptus Mechanicus PDF Sentinel (with 16mm die for scale)
I played Epic years ago with a Titan force. I never had enough activations, so I kit-bashed bits of GZG sci-fi vehicles to make some Sentinels. Trouble is I only got them half painted (there's 2 squads of 4) and never played the game again. There's talk of a 1000 point competition maybe happening in March next year - so this was the kick I needed to get the squads done. Apologies for the crappy iPhone photo - but I don't think I can wait to the weekend to get a friend to take better photos - this club is powering along!

The shell casings aren't from his gun if you are wondering ;)
Are the rims on the casings actually there, or are they an optical illusion created by hightlights (or the photo)?
If they are part of the shape, I would like to know how they were made or where you got them from?
-
It's brass tube 'rolled' with a scalpel to cut them to length and the bur is just a natural occurrence of the cutting method. The trick is to keep your scalpel blade perpendicular to the tube, otherwise it goes of and won't cut through.
They were just cut out and stuck on with wood glue, nothing else was done to them :)
cheers
James
-
This tool is the thing to cut tubes. It also allows to create tin cans by pressing the blade in a tube, but not cutting through it, :
-
Okies - very simple, then. :)
I've never seen a tool like that before - is the blade the circular thing to the left?
-
It is, yes. The two rollers on the other side keep the tube in place but for the very small tubes I find it a lot easier to do by hand.
cheers
James
-
Thanks! I wonder if that is available in this Hobby Development Country of mine. I was never able to find a foamboard rabbeting cutter :?

Thanks! I wonder if that is available in this Hobby Development Country of mine. I was never able to find a foamboard rabbeting cutter :?
Try hardware and DIY stores, tube cutters are also used in electrical and plumbing jobs IIRC. Alternatively you are guaranteed to find small scale high precision tube cutting tools at a specialized goldsmith tool store.
-
Thanks, guys! :)
Let's get back to business, now, sorry for the distraction.
-
One hoverbike rider from a two-pack formerly produced by Antenociti's Workshop ('Miri and Samanda' now OOP as I understand).
That looks fantastic. It was gutsy to combine the red with the orange like that, I would have been afraid that they would visually merge too much, which they do not.
I didnt know that those designs were now OOP, it seems like a pity. I dont know if would ever have got around to buying/painting them, but that design with the model suspended on the riders leg like the misdirection in a magic trick really looks brilliant (if maybe a little fragile).
-
Some top stuff on here lately! I gotta hurry up with my submission if I want to join the club. Which I do. =)
Paul, any explanation (apart from the obvious "visual appeal") for the green skeleton? =) Splendid paintjob!
The shell casings aren't from his gun if you are wondering ;)

-
Paul, any explanation (apart from the obvious "visual appeal") for the green skeleton? =) Splendid paintjob!
Thanks Mattias.
The skeleton is some sort of space guy who experienced some unlikely effects from space radiation of some sort, so now looks like a green skeleton. Or maybe its a daemonhost (or both) or something. Conceptually he may or may not have invisible flesh, or be dead, I havent decided yet.
(https://sho3box.files.wordpress.com/2014/12/marsattackincineratedskeleton.jpg?w=200&h=300)(https://sho3box.files.wordpress.com/2014/12/heavymetalastronaut.jpg?w=468)(https://sho3box.files.wordpress.com/2014/12/blightbatmanbeyond.jpg)
There is a little influence from Mars Attacks victim skeletons, the astronaut from the start of "Heavy Metal" and various pulpy radioactive types like "Blight" from Batman Beyond shown here.
Mainly I wanted to give the character some sort of codswallop "explanation" for why it might be moving around and holding a wrench. The bone coloured skeleton approach looks a little Harryhausen which is fine of course, but not science fantasy enough for me. I figured that having green bones implied something out of the ordinary, something more b-movie sci-fi that just a plain old fleshless set of reanimated bones.
Hopefully that "explanation" doesnt generate even more questions than it answered ;)
-

The sculpting style on the model is quaint and of its time but without being indistinct or soft. The huge undercut in the helmet and the heavily recessed face give the model surprising depth, plus the concept is nicely peculiar. All of that combined to make it great fun to paint.
Im going to try to squeeze one more model in to this club if I can... I might get one more completed before it finishes up, maybe.
-
Did he chase off some punks with a field gun? ;D
Nah, it's from the heavy walker that preceded him and is still to paint lol

Nicely done, glad to see one of those make it in! A lot of those figures are really small and finely detailed, they look challenging. Mine aren't built yet o_o

I got a selection of the figures to do an "Alien Legion"-style commando force for SciFi gaming, and will probably get most of the remaining figures as well. Really good stuff, but some of the arm combinations need pinning, which isn't always easy due to the small parts and surfaces involved.

I have had this mini forever and ever. I rushed the paintjob a bit, but I'm happy with the dirty white colour scheme and the tabletop look. Base will get some plant life as soon as I find where I put my plants.

Are you certain? I thought the riders were sculpted by Andrew Rae...
I bought a pack from Antenociti that had two bikes and two ladies :)
Yeah I was wrong.
Both great sculptors though.

I like the way you approached them, they have the right vibe for the genre. Besides Akira they remind me of Bubblegum Crisis AD Police a bit.

#57 Morton "Balls" Fieldmann - Born and raised in the irradiated first terraforming colonies of McKemmler IV, Mortie is one of few McKemmler IV-born mutants to actually get out of the system. He have returned to his old home planet with his newly acquired freighter ship and is now recruiting his old mutant hoodlum friends as muscle. Nicknamed "Balls" by his crew for his daring ways.
"It is I, Balls!"
The model is a bendy pre-paint from WOTC's Star Wars Minis range. Nautolan Soldier. I always thought they'd look fun painted as a human mutant. It was a bit soft in the details, as expected - and I have to say I completely ballsed up those pistols. Oh well, he's for gaming and will work just fine on the table.
-
I like your Balls phreedh ;)
How big are the bendy pre-paints? 25mm? 28mm? 32mm?
Cheers!
-
It's a puntastic one for sure! =) The baseline is 28mm but they're all over the place. Applies to both the D&D and the SW minis. There's a behemoth of a rebel trooper in one set, for instance. Most of them are slightly weedier than an RT adventurer though. They lack the chunkyness.
For a reference, the washer Balls is mounted on is 25mm wide.

#069: Judicus, Patriarch of Fellshadow Hive
This guy sat beside Brother Punch in all my Genestealer Cult battles back in the day of 2nd edition 40k. And like Punch, he was never finished. In fact, I had finished the base to fit that army's earliest versions, and he sat through fight after fight as a purple ink wash over a pink base coat. Well, last night he got detailed. Not my best work, but he is finally finished. I might just take him off that awful base...

They're cheap and nice but I could've been more diligent with the mold lines removal (doesn't really show on this guy though). I quite like them. I'm painting a unit, so it's a quick bish-bosh job. Photographed with my new iPhone 6 Plus (huge thing) but I think I'll stick with my digital camera. Works in a pinch though!

Quite remarkable, indeed - two weeks and a day. Who'd have thought that, but it goes to show that Sci-Fi is indeed a popular theme.
-
I hope these clubs one day roll around so I can submit a sci fi entry in the future lol.
Amazing work everyone!
-
Well done, everyone! This must be the fastest PC, yet, if I'm not mistaken?
And only 2 of my DreadBall players down... Now I must try to keep motivating myself for doing the other 6.... ::)
Well, good thing I started my Christmas Vacation this afternoon!

Well done everyone! There has been some great figures and some splendid paint jobs showcased in here, all in record breaking time. It really is a challenge painting a figure in time with these clubs lol
Cheers

Well that was enjoyable and easy going :) It was great to see so many interesting entries. If I could only have one of these badges then it would have to be this one.
Thanks to Westfalia Chris and any other admins involved in running it.
-
Yup all wrapped up by Christmas! ;)
Cheers all.
-
Jolly Well Done all round :D
-
Well played, everyone. Some great stuff here, and it even forced me to finish some figures I haven't looked at in years.
Woot!
-
Best part of the clubs is finishing those models you primed but never finished when that project lost steam. Another fun one to watch too.
-
Really enjoyed this one. Shame I only managed one entry but it was over in the blink of an eye.
