Title: Argonor's Sporadic Sci-Fi Thread
Post by: Argonor on December 10, 2014, 02:27:50 PM
Finally, the FWPC gave me the motivation to get a Street Judge painted:

Couple more pics on my blog.

I have had an almost complete collection of GoMC1 minis since the time when Mongoose decided fold all miniatures-related activities, and I also have the free version ofthe new(er) JDMG, and now I can finally start playing some small scenarios (using old Necromunda gangers and such ilk for perps).

As you may have guessed, it is my first Justice Dept. attempt, and I would very much like comments and suggestions on how to improve the looks (I already mused about it on my blog, but EVERY comment/suggestion/criticism is welcome, as I'm not a Dredd expert).

One thing I am definitely not going to change is the 'four-colour' look of the blue uniform - the comic-book like appearance of a judge is simply too iconic for me to go paint naturalistic 'black leather'.  :)

Nice start - I like the Judge as he is.

Nothing wrong with that painting. It's clean and crisp.

On a purey personal note I dislike the yellow / gold shoulder pad things. I'd do them all yellow. And I'd go for more of a cartoon look and deepen the shadows and give a lighter highlight too, to make them pop a bit more. After all it's a comic.

I do like the very dark blue juniorm. I know it's supposed to be black, but I grew up with the four colour printing where they used blue to show the highlights. So that's what I'd do. Black highlighted up blue.

But as I say it's personal preference and there's nothing wrong with yours.

Yes, I would have liked the contrasts a bit stronger, too.

I'm in two minds about the shoulder pads, not sure I like the bright yellow; maybe a darker 'golden' yellow would be better - or simply paint both pads gold (I'm not very inclined to painting the eagle in a not-gold colour).

I'll have to experiment a bit - does anyone have a good recipe for 'golden yellow'?

Changed the name of the thread, as I think I'd better keep all my futuristic stuff in one place 'round here!

Got this guy painted because of the FWPC, and I have the rest of the team in the works, too!

Thanks - I did have to experiment a bit - as always - to get the red colour I wanted. This time I used Foundry British Redcoat with Devlan Mud wash.

Well done. Look forward to the ref, ball and decaled versions of them.

Here's the ball. Couldn't get the core right, so went for a simple pj.

Ref is due any day soon, and THEN I'll go hunting for some MicroSet and MicroSol for the transfers...

Thanks, I probably could have done better, though, if I had had the time and patience to layer each individual armour plate up to hightlights, but I think they'll do OK on the pitch as is.  :)

The base of the ball was replaced by a neodynium disc-magnet, btw; in that way it stays on the base of the carrier (because of the washer-base).

Ah, not quite:

Base Coat Mix: Vallejo Polished Gold + Black - gives a very dark, worn golden colour
Then Badab Black wash to shade the base coat a bit further.
Vallejo Polished Gold, heavy drybrush
Mix of Vallejo Polished God + silver, light drybrush. This last mix is the 'secret' to my gold painting - when layering it creates an even shinier highlight.

Nice painting!

Thanks!

I did read your blog post :P, I just didn't think it was the highlight, but the wash. I will try that for myself in the future.

Great colour scheme on the Buccaneers

Thanks - I had plenty of time to ponder about it  lol

I see, OK.

If you want a smoother look, start with an even darker basecoat mix, skip the wash, and layer up the colour instead - the gold on the second Rohan warrior on the following page was done that way:

I just ordered Micro Set and Micro Sol for fixing those. Maybe I'll give it a go next time I have 5 days in a row off (for some reason, I seem to be able to be more productive when knowing I have plenty of time).

How closely should the decals be cut, and how warm should the water for softening them up be? I'm completely new to using decals, and haven't got a clue  ???

I have had my mind on necromancy lately, but look what the mail(wo)man brought me this morning:

I shall play through the Introductory Scenario over the next days/evenings, and I shall, of course, make a report covering my effort.

I never got around to solo-play the intro scenario - BUT I played it with my youngest daughter, Darth Lea.

Brief description of the battle on my blog.

And, today I played some games with Duregar/Ulolkish - the first one was our first go at the JDMG rules.

Also an AAR on my blog.

I REALLY like the way the gameplay of JDMG flows, and I shall create a couple of street gangs from Van Saar and Future Wars minis I bought painted years ago, and I also have a painted Ape gang that I bought back then.

Actually, four in this game, but a starting Justice Dept. force using the full rules will be rather small - 2 Street Judges + a Rookie Judge, or 1 Street Judge on Lawmaster + 2 Rookie Judges, and so on...

I might actually get around to doing those BEFORE our vacation trip to Italy (Venice area) later this year  lol

In the meantime, Duregar/Ulolkish and I have been at it with the Judge Dredd Miniatures Game once more:

I've heard people say that that game is *similar*ish to Necromunda? I've also heard a lot of good stuff about it. How many minis are needed per side? I might bring my sci-fi stuff to the Attic Attack as well, and would certainly be interested in giving it a try.

It's similar in the way that Frostgrave is similar to Mordheim.

You control a gang/team/small force and pit it against your opponent, Heroes earn xp, and Minions turn into Heroes if they survive 5 fights (i.e. do not roll a 'Dead' result in the post-battle phase when they have been taken OOA during the game).

I have one of the last free sets that were made available by Mongoose, before the printed rulebook, and I am not sure if it comprises all the rules contained in the current edition, but it has plenty of different gangs to choose from, and the rules play very smoothly.

We are experimenting with some house rules in order to make the game action more cinematic, and I think we are nearly there - as the next parts of the AAR should reveal.

Oh, and if you are underdog, you can hire mercenaries (reinforcements, in the case of the Justice Dept.) up to the   difference in team cost (but you have to deduct the cost of those from your earnings from the game, as payment), and, YES, the judges may call on Dredd in dire circumstances.

Well I am actually planning on digging out my DreadBall stuff for Attic Attack (Friday to Sunday), and I may even unearth the decals and start attaching them next week (no way I am going to make it in time for Attic Attack).

In the meatime, I am preparing a scenario for Star Wars Armada (sorry for the pic quality):

I am not going to town on those, planning to give them a block'n'wash treatment, maybe some drybrushing on the weapons.
Almost set on a paint scheme, still a bit in doubt about their under-armour suits. May vary those a bit to see what I like best.

I think they are going to look fine, but don't expect display quality.

We find them to allow for more cinematic-style action, as it is now not as big an advantage to sit tight and shoot at everything that moves.

I'm planning a Matrix Reloaded-like freeway chase in JDMG (with lanes in two levels), so cinematic-style action is exactly what I'm looking for!  :D

With a Sci-Fi version of SS&SS about to emerge from the cold depth of space, where no-one can hear you scream, it is time to dust off my 15mm xenomorphs project.

I just need to find the box I store it in...  ::)

Seeing all your XWING game posts reminds me how long it has been since we last played.  Need to break that our again.

Good luck on the hunt for the correct box.  I just did that for a pirate game my friend wants to play, took over an hour to find the correct figures.  On the plus side the storage is organized again.  lol

I know that feeling - but actually this time it was hiding in plain sight, just like the question.

I hope to find time to look through the box and plan what to prep and paint first. I think I should get 20-30 aliens done before painting the heroes (USCM)

As soon as I have cleared most of the plastic sitting on my prepping station away, I shall start cleaning and basing 20-30 of these (at least). Can't take that long with this scale  ::)

I am going to play my first games using WotC prepaints, while I get some of the multi-part minis assembled and painted.

One of the next days I should receive a shiny new 3D printer, so that I can also start making terrain on the cheap.

I imagine them on the side of the playing area, not directly in front of the players (would be impractical).

I think I am going to print a Stormtrooper dice tower, too, just because  ;)

11+ hours for the roof alone...

So how long for the whole thing?

Can't say for sure, until I have printed it - Cura is not giving the precise printing time (probably due to not quite up to date firmware, or something), but going by the print times given, 24+ hours (and that's with resolution 0.2, I dare not think how long it would take with 0.15 or 0.1). Including walls, roof, and either a closed or open blast door (I'll probably print both).

My printer is a CR10S S3, print volume 30x30x40 cm.

I need to adjust some settings (z hop and infill pattern, I think), but those 'threadings' can be mended with some scraping and sanding. The 'wave' pattern on the sides seems to have disappeared, now that I print the walls with concentric infill pattern  :)
Title: Re: Argonor's Sporadic Sci-Fi Thread
Post by: Argonor on August 12, 2018, 12:20:00 PM
The walls are finished.

There are still some 'waves' in the vertical surfaces, and I am afraid that I've got 'z wobble', which I think must be mended by physically altering some mechanical details, so I am not going to do something about it, until I am completely sure...

I think they are perfect for IA - assuming you mean the speeder, the designer's notes say that if to be used for Legion (which have slightly larger models), his models should be scaled up to 110%

I can take a pic with a couple of IA minis next to it after dinner. Hera and Chopper are from an IA Ally Pack, so they give you the size of the Phantom.

No, the designs are licensed under the Creative Commons - Attribution - Non-Commercial license, which means you can print them for yourself but not sell the prints.
Some designers make their work free for commercial use, but not this particular one.

I don't know if getting a friend to print them and covering the cost would violate the terms.  ???

There are also printing services where you send them a file, and they print that file for you - effectively renting you their machine, I am also uncertain about that... Lots of new things to consider in this digital world.

AND, I am just about to order Galactic Heroes to get me on tracks with the Star Warsy stuff once more.

In the meantime, though, expect some Grimdark AAR within a relatively short future...  :)

Hasbro 2004 Millennium Falcon, with a few parts missing - but I think I'll have that covered with my 3D printer.
