Title: Pizzagrenadier's Warhammer 40k Projects: New Mantis Warriors Librarian. Page 4.
Post by: Pizzagrenadier on January 11, 2015, 05:51:52 PM
Howdy all,

I've been a long time lurker here and after seeing TMP readership seem to dry up, I decided to start posting here. I hope to use this thread in particular to show the progress of my 40k projects. After a decade long hiatus of historical wargaming (my old handle here was Iron Ivan Keith) I was pulled back into the grim dark of the 40th millennium. I've been especially inspired by many of the Rogue Trader and 40k projects posted here. While I fully dived back into the 40k universe, the same cannot be said of the rules, and I use a modified Disposable Heroes Point Blank and Disposable Heroes & Coffin For Seven Brothers for my games. Being the author, I have really enjoyed tinkering with the systems for our games. We use Point Blank for the more RPG and skirmish oriented games and DHC7B for bigger battles. So far, it has mostly been Point Blank as our forces among the club members are still growing.

The first problem I encountered when getting back into 40k was almost a complete lack of terrain. Especially buildings. A French WWII village just isn't going to cut it. I did have some post apocalyptic terrain, but even that has its limitations for 40k. So I had to find solutions that allowed us to get gaming again quickly. Luckily, I was able to secure a group of old desert style dwellings that I had used for 40k a long time ago from a friend who had used them for historical games. They were very generic adobe style buildings though (I had used them for Orks, Star Wars, and even modern Middle East). I decided to turn them into something a little more grim dark, but not so gothic as to be unusable for other sci fi or post apocalyptic settings.

The last several blog posts show the project from beginning to almost complete (I only have two more buildings in the original set to refurbish).

Here is the latest, a Shanty Fort:

Here is my blog post that kicked off the descent back into 40k madness with my Ork project and various other units and characters. It also contains a battle report of one of our first games of Point Blank in the 40k universe: the rescue of a governor and retinue from a downed Aquila Lander.

Welcome. Some nice looking figures there.

To post images on LAF - you need to have an IMG tag around the link to your photo - the easiest way is to click the little landscape icon (2nd row, 2nd one along)

Thanks for the advice. I was just wondering how to do that and was looking it up.

Edit: Hey, it worked! Fixed the pics so they show up. Thanks!

Lovely stuff, Pizzagrenadier, like the weathering of the buildings, also the blue-white faces of the orcs are pretty nice.

Looking good!  :-*
I particularly like the corrosion and weathering on your metals in the shanty town, and the look of those (Forgeworld?) MkVI marines. Pretties.
Those Orks and Marines make me think "Battle for the Farm"....

Thanks guys!

The beakie Marines are Forgeworld. I do intend to use them for the Battle at the Farm sometime soon. I'm not a big fan of the Forgeworld beakies though. They're ok, but there are only two leg options and they are skinnier than the newest GW Tactical Marines. I found that the newest Tactical box has 4 different MK VI legs, two beakie heads, and a set of shoulder pads. I've been buying up loose bits to assemble an all MK VI beakie force to use for the Badab War (pics on the blog).

I just need to make a few scenic items for that scenario. I can't wait to play it as that is the very thing that got me into wargaming! I was thinking of converting one of my Ork nobs as Thrugg Bullneck.

I'll be honest - I typically hesitate to click on Warhammer related threads...but this is a gem.  Love the buildings and terrain and it's wonderful to see Beakies back in action.  Awesome stuff.

More pics of the shanty town project as it nears completion. I also added some pics of a generator and power pylon I made to go with it. The generator and pylon were made to look like Quantum Gothic's stuff, which at the time was unavailable (they seem to have since gone back into business, which means I will be picking up their generator-which is smaller but still cool as hell).

Thanks! Indeed, that is one of the games I am gearing up for. I need to finish building and painting a Pedro Kantor model first and I want to work on a few items to use for the farm, but otherwise I am ready to go.

When I do that, I'll definitely post the AAR.

Hello folks,

Been a while since I was able to finish much in the way of my Orks, but last week I finished up a mob of Killa Kans. Here are some pics. I like the kits a lot. They are pretty easy to put together and they do allow for a fair amount of variety with weapons and details. I like them a lot. I also put together the Stompa I got from my wife for my birthday.

Everything is great but the biggest influence on me at the moment is the shanty town: Nice palette to bring everything together.

Our new Necromunda campaign begins tonight so I can see more new 40k influences on my horizon too shortly.

Thanks! I cut the lid off the GW barrels to make them open. Then I used the new GW Typhus Corrosion effect paint to get the rusted texture. After that I base coated them with Krylon flat camo brown. Then I drybrushed the rust a mid brown followed by that bright rust orange color.

Hope that helps. I really like the Typhus Corrosion paint. I know I'm going to be using it for all kinds of stuff.

Thanks guys! I always loved the Inquisitor terrain and some of that and the new Rogue Trader RPG material has been in the back of my mind to create this terrain. I liked how Inquisitor took place in the inhabited parts of the Imperium, not just the ruined battlefields of the grim dark. I want to create lots more terrain that serves a purpose and populate my Rogue Trader style games with civilians, workers, rioters, rebels, etc.

I am finishing up two more tonight. Pics to follow...

Typhus Corrosion is a new GW special effect paint. Basically, it's a dark brown with a slight grit to it that makes a good basis for rusted metal texture. I like it. I don't use it on the buildings as I think it is too subtle for that (I just let the colors do the talking on the buildings). But it is good to use on details like the barrels.

Just finished up some more of my Mantis Warriors Badab War HQ. I put off painting the company banner for some time because it had been a while since I had done anything freehand (as in years). But, it wasn't going to paint itself, so I dove in. I hope you like the old school updated feel of the project. The Badab War project marches on...

Simply stunning! I couldn't even hope to get near that with my old eyes and arthritic hands now, and even when I was younger and more foolhardy I would have been hardpressed to match your standard bearer for the sheer level of detailing. Excellent work! Makes me nostalgic for doing some beakie Mantis Warriors even though I know I'd never get within a thousand parsecs of your level of finish! Yow! :o 8)

Beautiful work, and though I've grown more and more anti-GW over the years...simple, cleanly painted Beakies still tug at my heart strings.  Well done! :)

Thank you! Thank you Leland for the extremely kind words.  I'd love to see you break out some old school 40k Badab War stuff! I feel the same way about your skills with kitbashing tanks and vehicles out of...well, nearly anything! My brain simply doesn't work on that abstract level to be able to look at parts like that and put them together.

Hat off to you sir!

Here are three more models I finished this past week. Hope you enjoy. The HQ is one sniper bolter model from being done.

I'm looking to get in our first Badab War game soon with my friend's Sons of Medusa in the wastelands of Bellerophon's Fall.

I cals 'em like I sees 'em, PG, and your latest batch of Badab War bad-asses merely underscores my previous comments. Wow. Sharp, clean, and spot on capture of the old WH40KRT universe vibe. Come to think of it, somewhere in our storage unit I have some back issues of the Inquisitor fanzine I used to write for, and there may very well be some old B&W photos of the kitbashed hover tanks I built for those Mantis Warriors I mentioned so long ago. Seein's how I have some of those very same '70s vintage microwave plastic dinner plates still unused, maybe I should try and back engineer at least of of the fine old brutes.... :D
