So, after painting a lot of Superheroes (like, 150 or so), I can finally get back to my wargaming roots, Science Fiction! Well, I started with 2nd Edition 40K back in 1996, but grew out of 40K when it hit 4th Edition and moved on to other things, but I still kept my Orks and some Chaos, because I love the 40K fluff even if 40K itself leaves me a bit cold.
Man, keep saying 40K and it sounds really funny. (40K40K40K40K40K40K40K40K)
Anywho, I have the start of several armies, which I'll be working on and posting up here, along with fluff, AARs and maybe just some links to cool SF ideas and concepts. Game-wise, I'm leaning towards JDMG for squad-skirmish games and Warpath for bigger games; still looking for a game in-between, about the size of an SOTR game.
First faction is The Empire. Mine aren't as nice as some other repaints on this board, but I always thought Stormtroopers would get that white armour dirty pretty quickly "in the field". Also in the pipe are Orks, Saurians and some other stuff.

I painted these to by my Annihilation Wave for superheroes and, inspired by the comic, went for the same colour scheme across a disparate range of models. There are some kitbashed Tyranids, D&D Spiders, Mantic ZZor and even some Mi-Go.
Again, I'm not sure what I'll do with the bugs just yet, but maybe a Starship Troopers style game could be in the works.

Saurian IFD (Infantry Fighting Dinosaur). Designed to support Saurian troops, it features a heavy flame thrower and two guided AT missiles; not no mention the cantankerous herbivore that's all strapped to.

Working on converting some Robogear infantry into Cybermen, getting IKH of Fiendish Fabrications to have a go at some heads for them. Just to make sure that they'll be tall enough, I put together a body and lined it up next to my other SF minis. Given how much LAF loves size comparison shots, I thought I'd share it:

I liked some things about the system, but there was something of a lack of "flow" that may have been down to the limited armies or the confusion of a first game. The Nerve roll really interested me, but we made so few throughout the game that they made no real impact.
Naturally, the Marauder army list felt pretty good for the orks, but I need to rethink the Stormtroopers, perhaps as veterans or another army entirely.
What do other people think about Warpath as a system? I really like the look of it, but I hope it gets better than this first game. Suggestions?

Last week, in our never ending quest to find good SF systems, Benny and myself played a game of 40Kish skirmish using AE-WWII as the basis. Now, I know the next question I'm going to get is "Why not AE-Bounty?" well, we only had the AE-WWII book, and Benny reckoned that it would work pretty well for a RT/2nd Ed 40K vibe.
So with some of Benny's WIP warbands and a table at the LGS, we tried a game out.

So, first, we needed a lot more small terrain, like barricades, but otherwise the game went pretty well. Gunfire was lethal, but not as messy as melee, which fit the 40K feel well, may need to shorten the range on the Ogryn though. We both plyed a little risky, because it was just a play-test, but I think it went well. Need to dig out some of my 40K skirmish stuff now.

Got in another game of AE-WWII 40K on Saturday, this time we made less mistakes and the game felt a lot more balanced. I'm keen to get some stuff together for this now, but I think it will have to wait.
I played some worshipers of Nurgle and Benny played Ad-Mech, both forces he had painted. The mission was a territory grab with me attacking, played on my WIP Necropolis table with some extra ruins added.

I know a certain Doctor who'll be happy to see this post. It's funny painting an army to no real plan, things change and you end up not quite finishing things in the order you should. For example, last night I finished ten miniatures and now I have a pretty decent looking army ready to go. ::)
Saurian Amalgamated Security see themselves as the most feared and efficient Mercenaries in the galaxy. They are wrong. Saurian Amalgamated are seen as the mercs you hire when there are no other options. They're not terribly bright, tend to break things and eat way too much. Saurians are great in a fight, they're tough, vicious and too dumb to know when to quit, but tend to be a bit fuzzy about mission objectives.

Predasaur Squad 2
Predasaurs serve as combination shock troops, demolition teams and garbage disposals for Saurian Amalgamated. Even dumber than their Saurian "cousins", Predasaurs are tough and brutal, but take direction poorly and cannot handle complex tasks. They are equipped with Heavy Machine Pistols in the vague hope that they will hit something, but they do most of their damage with their teeth.

Saurian Sharpshooters
Despite being slow-witted and prone to aggression, Saurians make surprisingly good sharpshooters. They're unlikely to panic and laying in the sun is a good time for them. Napping is a problem, but amphetamine supplements are helping.

You shouldn't be asking why anyone would carry a sword in a Galaxy filled with high-tech guns. You should be afraid of the maniacs who are still alive after carrying swords in a Galaxy filled with high-tech guns. Only the most unhinged and antisocial Saurians are chosen for Assault Squads, they ambush enemy units from cover, screaming bloody murder.

General Grimlock
The founder and commander of Saurian Amalgamated, Grimlock decided he should start as a Four-star General, but has since promoted himself to Six-star for his gallantry in the field. He rides his mighty steed "Jeb" into battle, after seeing a picture of Napoleon on a horse and thinking that riding around on something would be a good way to look important.

IFD (Infantry Fighting Dinosaur)

Finished a horde of random dinosaurs. These were a pretty quick job, just a couple of $2 bags of dinos and some Army Painter dip. In-game these work more as interactive terrain than miniatures, forming a dangerous area of roaming cover.

Sutekh the Destroyer, Baymax and K-9. (Eureka, Toy and Black Tree).
The ancient and powerful Sutekh was trapped in a time tunnel for thousands of years, growing steadily more insane and plotting his revenge on a Renegade Time Lord. When he awoke on Mars, he tricked the locals into thinking he was some kind of "Machine God" until they built him a new body and he slaughtered them all. Sutekh is now at large in the Galaxy, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake.
Baymax model inflatable medical droids are a common sight across the galaxy. They're cheap, easy to maintain and effective. This larger "Orderly" model has been known to be used even in front-line combat situations, as few soldiers are willing to shoot a droid that will heal them just as well as it does the enemy.
K-9 is a robot dog. It shoots lasers and plays chess.

No solid plans for the VOTOMs yet, but at the moment I'm thinking that they won't change too much. I kind of like their look and think it fits with the army as it is, even their dinky guns. The major change I'm considering is some Tau missile pods for a bit more firepower.

When asked to design a light scouting vehicle with reasonable offensive capabilities, Saurian engineers came back with this; a T-Rex with robot arms mounted with machine guns. It was figured that the thing would be utterly useless, but the combination of a partially-reprogrammed brain and a metric sh*tload of combat drugs have made the Cyber-Rex an absolute monster on the battlefield.

Now that the army will have to do some duty as an Imperial Guard army as well, I find myself having to make some other specific units in order to play. I had the idea of using them for 40K in the back of my head as I was making the army, but it was never a central concern, as I'm more keen to get them into Warpath, Warengine and Antares. But you have to play what your opponents want to, so I'll be trying out some DinoHammer 40,000 in the coming weeks.

Also, I'm thinking about one of the "Psycher Choirs", but I'm not sure that the Saurians will look right in that role. So if I can find some other minis that fit the "feel" of the army, then I can do that and a Combat Engineer team.

The alien will make a nice NPC or ally for skirmish games, I love the base it came with, almost nicer than the rest of the mini put together.
Got some plans for the Space Orcs that I need to get down on paper before I go too far with the painting, pretty happy with the new colour scheme I've done though.

Saurian IFD with Rocket tubes and HMGs. Used to support infantry squads, the IFD is lightly armoured and reasonably fast, but requires a stable-boy in the motor pool.

The big bronto is an expensive toy from Collect-A, I think it set me back over $30. The others are cheapies from the Chinese $2 stores around Melbourne's east.

The best sharpshooters are given heavier caliber weapons capable of punching through power armour and light vehicle armour. This makes them a tad less mobile on the battlefield, so they can usually be seen tank-riding.

Firefight is still in alpha, but I'm keen to get a few games in, it looks pretty nifty for the $1 investment on Kickstarter. For the Saurians, I've chosen Veterans for the Mercs so that they're a tad more competent than your average Xenos with a gun. I think size-wise, the army is pretty decent in terms of collecting and numbers of minis on the table.

Inquistor versus VOTOM in hand-to-hand.
The core system is good, combat is fast and not bogged down in too many pointless die rolls. The Objectives don't seem to add much to the game at this stage, but early days and all that. The Orders add strategy and options, meaning that I never felt stuck or cornered. I'll be playing more games and hopefully getting the rules right over the next few weeks.

Also, I find myself immersed in conundrum, as Spider-man would have it; I'm now in the placement part of my course, so my level of homework has gone down and free time gone up, so I'm keen to smash out as much hobby stuff as possible. Given that the Saurians are nearly finished, the obvious step is to jump onto the Universal Church of Truth or another army, however, I find myself a bit reluctant to go down that road until Firefight is out of Beta.
Now, I started SF stuff again despite not having rules to play with, but now that I have Judge Dredd, Firefight and AE-40K, I find that I'm slightly reluctant to just do whatever I feel like knowing that I'll probably have to change it down the track. For example, I'll eventually need to add radio troopers to each Saurian squad for Firefight. With so much stuff waiting for paint, it seems like a waste of time to leave it alone, but is it better to just have to re-do it in a few months?
As I said, immersed in conundrum. ???

Put the finishing touches on this squad last night, a Saurian Breaching Squad. Not sure if they'll see much action in games, but when I saw these parts for sale from Victoria Miniatures, I felt that it was a team that had to be made. I imagine that their role is to board enemy ships and storm fortifications, hence the ceramite shields and close-range weaponry.

I've been printing alternative guns for mine and turning the backpack vents into weapon mounts and once you can really get the weapon into a good two handed pose they can get into some really nice poses.

Been cranking away at stuff for Firefight now that I have the final army lists (rules are in the proofreading stage). The big Zombies are "Leapers", heavy infantry for the Plague army, mostly heroclix and scratch builds.
Caved in and bought a couple of Miniature Scenery ATVs because the Saurians needed some transport. Pretty decent kits for $18 worth of lasercut wood, and my bits box provided enough extras to get them up to scratch. Still feeling that the sides are a bit sparse though.

There are strange things in the universe, call it what you will; Psychic Powers, Magic, Quantum Portability Manipulation, Saurians just don't seem able to do it. So when Saurian Amalgamated Security need some mental might, they outsource. Illithid Space Wizards, clad in their Star-Metal suits can harass the enemy with various rays and spells to support Saurian Mercs on the battlefield.
This squad will see play as a Psychic Choir in games of 40K.

Really liking this game, the hidden objectives and Orders make for an interesting experience and each army (there are 7 in the book) has a very different feel and different strategies to use. That said, I'm seeing how 1250 points is the recommended starting army size rather than 1000; in our game, the Enforcers simply could not put down enough fire to keep the Plague at bay and the Plague only had a couple of options to take out the Enforcer Striders. However, for a platoon-level game, Firefight has a leg up over competitors in fast play and ease of entry whilst still having depth of strategy and options for the player. I'm honestly shocked that it's not lighting more fires under those of us that grew up out 2nd and 3rd Edition 40K and are looking for something to "scratch that itch".

Ok, so Mantic did a Kickstarter last year for their new version of Warpath. One of the extras was the "Firefight" system, a similar idea, but with more "platoon" sized armies to sit in-between Warpath and Deadzone in terms of mini count. As far as I know the rules aren't yet commercially available, but will hopefully be soon.

As the Space Wolf player in that and a previous match up against the Plague I can say its a quick and fun game.
But I'm not convinced that pushing it to 1250 would correct the balance issues of Enforcers vs The Plague. Im happy to try a bit more but with the numbers of guys the plague can put down I just cant see the Enforcers ever being a solid match up.

Decided to do a bit of a census of the minis for both my Saurian and Plague armies to help track how much I need to paint before May. As it stands now;
I need to purchase 3 miniatures.
I need to assemble 16 miniatures (including those I've yet to purchase).
I need to paint 60 miniatures (including those I've yet to assemble and purchase).
Given that I've painted 87 minis since 1/1/17, I think that it's doable.

Cultists with Grenade Launchers (3rd Gens), I know that the Panzerfausts aren't technically "Grenade Launchers" in the sense I'm using them, but they were a bit too nice to pass up using and clearly stand out in the squad.

Bomber Zombies (2nd Gen Bursters), I already had the Eureka ones from my old Necromunda days, so I just built up the other three to round out the squad.
Now then, turns out I was missing a couple of units, so my old count was a little off, it looks more like this:
I'm awaiting the arrival of 4 miniatures, which then need to be assembled.
Following that, I need to finish painting 63 minis that are at least undercoated.
Also, I'm planning to sell my Universal Church of Truth army when it's finished and I need to make sure that it's legal with the final version of the rules, so I'm thinking there's at least 5 minis in that lot that will need to be reworked at least a little.
I'm aware that I haven't done much "fluff" for my Plague, I do have some ideas, but really need to get them down on paper at some stage.
As you said Argonor, I do try to make my figures have more than the one use where I can, as well as the Saurians being usable for 40K Imperial Guard, I'm working on having the Plague function as Tyranids and/or a Genestealer Cult, but I don't have a copy of the rules yet.

Played a game of Firefight at club yesterday, 1000 points, my Saurians (Corporation) vs Space Wolves (Enforcers). It was a pretty hammering win with my 17 VPs to my opponent's 5 VPs. Finding that the Corporation infantry don't do a great deal against the Enforcers, which is a shame, because I love the Saurians. May have to work out army lists to take on specific opponents, which is not a thing I really like to do.

Plague zombies absorb enemy fire and can be nasty when they make combat.

Cultists aren't great fighters, but even their fire can keep heads down, plus, unlike Zombies, they can take objectives.
In the end, I made combat and wiped my opponent out completely. Oops. Probably not the best introductory game. Still, he had fun and will try it again with a different army list. Still loving this game, more painted minis and new factions on the way.

Plague "Beasts/Swarms", or "Runners" in the vernacular of the fluff I've got brewing. They can be fielded as a unit or as attachments to infantry squads, hence the lack of a round number.

@ Hat Guy, Hi , I was wondering from the photos from the Firefight demo table above, which company makes the MDF Futuristic Apartment towers in the photos, I seen them some where before and I didn't book mark the web site, and I am keen to buy a couple for my futuristic games, they look great , and don't actually take up to that much of a gaming foot print on the table. If you remember the supplier or web site that would be of great assistance to me and save me getting side tracked and lost in Google land looking at all the different MDF terrain kit makers out there and really blowing my Christmas budget.

Looking to replace them with something a bit more SF down the track, but these will do for now.
Jonas - Firefight is worth a look of you want something "40K-lite"; about 20-50 minis per side, alternating activations and combat resolved with only two die rolls. Armies are nicely felxible, my only complaint is that the ranges seem short after playing SOTR and FoF.

Two units (with extras) of my Firefight Enforcers finished. Technically "Enforcer Defenders", each unit has a Lieutenant option and a Flame-thrower option. The flamers were the first figures I assembled for the army and I'm no longer keen on them as they're holding weapons and the rest of the army went in a hand/arm-mounted direction. May change them down the track.
Just two officers, three jetbikes and two vehicles to get done for a completed 1250 points.

Played a game of Firefight today with a friend interested in learning the system. 1250 points Saurians vs Plague. I won with the Plague again, but the game was close until the last two turns.

They're made by "Collect-A" which most toy stores stock, but I've only ever found the dead ones at Gardenworld.

It's a Cigar Box mat, made out of a kind of felt with the design impregnated into the fiber, so it can be washed if need be. I love it, especially because it has no inherent scale and I'm getting into 20mm and 10mm in addition to 28mm.

Pictured here with his "Aromatherapy Servo Skull", Gallus is a leading Mental Health expert in the Astartes, helping fellow Space Marines deal with their Anxiety on the battlefield.

The bases are just GW Martian Ironearth and Nurgle's Rot, I had help painting these from a newbie, so I kept things simple.
Finished up a couple of "Experimental Weapon" markers for the game I'm writing, inspired by the "Hand Mines" in Doctor Who.

With the new GW plastic marines being so big, I had to figure out a way to make the regular infantry for my Firefight Plague Fathers. After a bit of kibashing, I came up with these "Space Chaos Warriors" (y'know, Chaos Warriors, only in space), the rationale being they're not Space Marines, but humans who have scavenged armour and equipment to fight for Papa Nurgle.

Having "gone full Heretek" before he gained access to the knowlege required to make Archo-flagellents, Kadmos had to improvise. By taking "volunteers", adding weapon attachments to their limbs and loading them up on a cocktail of combat drugs, Kadmos created his own "Narco-flagellents". Describing them as "wonderfully violent" Kadmos has instituted Nacro-fagellent conversion as a punishment for cowardice, desertion and not putting the sockets back in the toolbox nicely.

I've tried that and it doesn't always work. I have a high-end camera from my uni Film Studies days, so the images tend to be too big to attach properly.
Once I get the last few minis done for my Saurians and Plague, I'll get some professional pictures taken and put them up on the club website for all to see.

Just run them through a photo-editor (I use GIMP, it's free) and reduce them to about 750 px wide - then they also fit nicely one the pages here.
