A Foundry pirate to kick off my new project. C&C welcome!
-
Nice brushwork :)
-
Lovely figure that one. I've got about 100 of the Foundry cutthroats, and he's always been one of my favourites. Lovely pose, lots of character. Good paintwork too :)
-
Fantastic looking figure. Thanks for sharing.
Regards,
Hitman

Nice pj. Top sculpts those Foundry ones.
-
That's a fine looking buccaneer you've painted.
Who is the maker, please?
Well done!
Best,
Sendak
-
Thanks for the comments! It's a Foundry miniature, from "Bloody Bill's Butcher Boys" here http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/our-ranges/pirates-and-swashbucklers/treasure-island-collection-bccut002/
-
Nice start yto your collection. Hope you'll show us some more in due course.

Here's the latest, from Black Scorpion:

Another pirate done!
-
Great stuff. ;D He is certainly a seafarer, look at his weatherbeaten face :)
-
Very nice work! I am a big fan of both the Foundry and the Black Scorpion pirate ranges.

Thanks Malamute and mweaver! I love both ranges too. I'm glad I managed to transmit the feel of a wiry, worn pirate. I had something like Long John Silver and Blind Pew from Treasure Island in mind :)
-
Very nice paint jobs, especially the one-legged fellow 8)

Nice brush work.
Pirates are always fun to paint as you don't need to follow any paint guides.
-
Following up on Melnibonean's comment...
I dubbed my latest pirate Flamboyant George for obvious reasons:
-
Lovely little crew being built up here :-*
-
That's a very nice collection you're building there.
-
Thanks for the kind words! I might do a group shot once I have a few more done :)
-
I really love :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Very nice miniatures (and painting job)!

Nice paint jobs on some nice figures :-* :-* :-* :-*
Keep up the good work

The skeleton s face, and the rest of him are particularly lovely, if that is a good word to describe something undead
-
Very nice work!
-
Great to see one of our sailors in there 8)

Thanks for the kind words! Maybe now is the time for that group shot, if you're interested?

Very nice. I hope you're planning to add more.
-
Finally! First pirate of 2016:
-
Looking great :)
So total number is now seven? Will you add to the pirate crew still or go for the opposition next?
-
they look especially good in the group shot.
-
So total number is now seven? Will you add to the pirate crew still or go for the opposition next?
Couple more to go, then I think it's time for some British soldier types!
-
Lovely, especially his face. He looklike a right swarthy scurvy sea dog!
-
After plenty of terrain building, here's a painted mini for a change. Melisande Wavecutter from Reaper, painted as a Spanish pirate queen.

:-* :-*

Very nice work! ;)

Nice work on those pirates :)
Cheers
Keith

I added some Casting Room WSS British to fight my pirates, quite happy with these and fun to paint:
Write-up and some thoughts on historical accuracy at https://dawnofthelead.com/2016/08/27/from-the-painting-desk-42-redcoats/
-
Nice painting on some unusual poses.
-
Added these two civilians. The man is from Redoubt's FIW range, the lady is Front Rank. Happy with how that yellow turned out!

Do it Dave, I know you want to....:D
-
Great growing collection, there!
-
Ok, these aren't really pirates, nor are they historical, but since they're a part of the same project and Halloween's right around the corner:

Full post here: https://dawnofthelead.com/2016/10/23/from-the-painting-desk-44-horrors-of-the-deep/
These will be used in a Halloween pirate game next Saturday!
-
Both are great minis, and that crab mutant is going on my to-buy list, for sure!
-
A couple of new faces added!
Redcoat officer from Galloping Major (uniform definitely not accurate, this is Hollywood pirates)
Voodoo queen by Black Cat Bases
(https://dawnofthelead.files.wordpress.com/2016/11/voodooqueen.jpg)
As usual, write-up here (https://dawnofthelead.com/2016/11/10/from-the-painting-desk-45-special-characters/).
-
Added a governor (left), his foppish dandy of a son (right) and their manservant, aka hired muscle/bodyguard (centre).

Write-up here (https://dawnofthelead.com/2017/01/23/from-the-painting-desk-47-governors-retinue/).
-
Lovely :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
The eyes on the servant are amazing
-
Only just read your thread, the latest 3 have turned out well, I particularly like Mitchell.
I got this figure a couple of years ago and put him on one side because of his massive size but he looks fine here. Maybe its because you've painted him dark and sinister in comparison to the others that he's worked so well. As gamer Mac says the eyes stand out well.
-

Thanks for the comments! It's always a fun moment when things come together, eyes can really make or break a paintjob. Mitchell really is massive, but I figured that I'd just make him massive in the narrative as well. I don't mind mixing sizes and scales somewhat, as once you're looking at things from even a gamer's perspective, most of the size differences tend to disappear.
To keep the ball rolling, I added a pirate from Hasslefree, and I'm really happy with the end result for once!
With a bunch of other pirates also seen on this thread:
As usual, write-up here (https://dawnofthelead.com/2017/01/30/from-the-painting-desk-48-the-unkillable-frenchman/).

Back in business! Here's Big André, the Port George odd job handyman.

With full write-up here (https://dawnofthelead.com/2017/05/08/from-the-painting-desk-49-the-gentle-giant/).

Hasslefree piarte and Big Andre are both stunning! Very nice bunch of pirates you have! And ooh! The Manservant! Keep up the good job!
-
Thanks Dino!
Here's my latest, a privateer by Black Scorpion, with write up here (https://dawnofthelead.com/2017/05/12/from-the-painting-desk-50-the-doctor/).

-
Great brushwork as usual, CONGRATULATIONS! :-*
And thank you very much for the pirate size comparison on your blog! ;)
-
Thanks dinohunterpoa! When I get home in the summer, I'd be happy to take some more comparison pictures.
-
Added a night watchman from Blue Moon Manufacturing. Really happy with how this one turned out!

Added a night watchman from Blue Moon Manufacturing. Really happy with how this one turned out!
Very nice! :-*
I have this one and his "clone" from Foundry; both work at the beach signaling with their lanterns for the beaching party of smugglers in my pirate setting! lol
Historical notes here: http://www.smuggling.co.uk/history_landfall.html (http://www.smuggling.co.uk/history_landfall.html)
-
Excellent stuff!! ;)
-
Ooh yes I like the watchman. His lantern is spot on. ;D
-
Ooh yes I like the watchman. His lantern is spot on. ;D
Yes the lantern in particular is fantastic
-
Thanks! I was about to paint it yellow and then started looking at reference photos. A dim lantern apparently goes from white to yellow, orange, red and dark brown at the very edge. Really happy with it myself, too, and gave me the confidence to paint in some lighting effects as well.
-
Your lantern painting effect was unbelievably successful! The first time I saw it, I thought you used some kind of glass... and the little light seems to be flickering! Congratulations!
-
Two maroons from Foundry. They'll eventually be their own faction, but for now they're a part of my pirates. Blog post here (https://dawnofthelead.com/2017/06/18/from-the-painting-desk-52-maroons/).
-
Excellent again, very subtle brushwork
-
From my personal experience in Haiti and Bermuda, the skin tones look PERFECT! Really amazing, CONGRATULATIONS!!! :O)
-
Well done! Keep up the good job!
-
Thank you very much, warms my heart :)
-
A rich plantation owner. He deserves anything nasty that comes his way.

With blog post here (https://dawnofthelead.com/2017/07/12/from-the-painting-desk-54-foul-capitalist/).
-
He looks very much the pushy, rich type*.
:-* :-*
*So: Yes!
He does.
;)
-
Two more additions! A cabin boy from North Star and a henchman by Outpost. Blog post on these two here (https://dawnofthelead.com/2017/07/21/from-the-painting-desk-55-big-guns/).

Added a jolly boat lightly converted from a Playmobil piece. I kept it neutral so it fits both pirates and redcoats.

They're WSS minis from Foundry's offshoot Casting Room miniatures:
https://www.castingroomminiatures.com/collections/war-of-the-spanish-succession/products/marlburian-infantry-characters
-
The boat! A very great addition for your project!
Beautiful pictures of both pirates and soldiers and oh! the watchman at the bow! I love this figure :-*
-
Thanks, Manatic! Most of Casting Room's models really feel like stuff Foundry are too ashamed to put on their main site, stuff from that time they want to forget about. But there are some real little gems in there, too.
I hadn't noticed these ones before.
-
Jolly good...
-
Great stuff as usual....my own pirate band has not seen paint for quite a while.... :D

Agreed :D The WSS stuff is fairly small though - while it might not be apparent from the photo, I bulked up the height of their bases somewhat. These are great minis though!
Great stuff as usual....my own pirate band has not seen paint for quite a while.... :D
I can just give them a better home next Salute :D

Hotel already booked :)

Yes, some nice items here. And the game? Will that be in 2025? lol
-
Lovely stuff! :-* Great use of that Playmobil boat, do you have plans for bigger vessels?
Oh, and you should run a game in next Ropecon ;) :D

Thanks! I have a Playmobil ship waiting for when I have the time. I've been seriously considering Ropecon, actually! Hmmmmmmm...
-
Lovely new additions.
:-* :-*
Never seen a few of these figures, so thanks for opening my eyes to them.
:)
-
And the game? Will that be in 2025? lol
Um, there's a confusion there, you are probably talking about a game that I wanted to organize 5 years ago. lol
-
beautifuly painted!
-
Boat is amazing, do You remember which playmobile set has it? Or perhaps what was the colour of the boat before converting and painting?
-

It's apparently an old one, this: https://www.amazon.com/PLAYMOBIL%C2%AE-3053-Playmobil-Pirate-Ship/dp/B00005BN6C so it's Pirate Ship 3053. The boat itself was already brown, I just gave it a few drybrush layers.

I picked up a terrarium decoration piece at the local pet store...

Oh, I could, but...
Both valid options, the piece was only 10€! The manufacturer is http://www.exo-terra.com/
When things are cheap and give such a head start I will always take the easy option.
;)
I reckon this one would work well with some that I have that do not really work in my Old West theme (the more 'rounded' ones)...
Maybe two different types for different themes is a good idea.
:D
Anyway, when I do make some I shall be basing them on your buttes, Mama.
You do have some lovely buttes....

As a look back on 2017, I posted a whole bunch of photos on my blog (https://dawnofthelead.com/2018/01/06/piratical-2017-recap/). I won't link them all here, but here's a few:

Newest addition after a good long while. Long John Silver by Slug Industries - an absolutely gorgeous mini.
The mini is currently available through Slug Industries' Kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/718310363/the-sailboat-malarkey-28mm-pirate-ship) and there's a free giveaway of a copy of the mini on my blog (https://dawnofthelead.com/2018/03/31/from-the-painting-desk-58-long-john-silver/), too, should you be interested.
-
Oh! What a face! Stunning sculpt! And very nice painting too!
-
What a great thread!!!! I love the long john silver figure!
-
Thank you, thank you! It's a brilliant sculpt, I love Paul Hicks' work. Definitely worth picking up :)
-
Very nice work!!!! :) ;)

This is a great thread. It greatly contributed to my decision to resume my pirate project that stalled ages ago.

I saw these on your blog- very nice work!

Fantastic piece of scenery, but even more impressed with your sea and beach. Can you tell us your secret?
-
Fantastic piece of scenery, but even more impressed with your sea and beach. Can you tell us your secret?
The beach itself is just cheap foam camping mat, which is a surprisingly awesome terrain base as it comes with its own light texture and doesn't hurt knocked down miniatures. The sea is toilet paper, PVA, paint and gloss varnish. Here's a great tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TwpB7sVMn8&t=5s

-
Great thread! Very impressed with how your Depths of Savage Atoll pieces came out. I won some in an eBay auction and was unsure what result I could get from them but you have shown me they have great potential.
Your terrain is so vibrant and immersive. Lovin’ it!

My most recent addition is this 3D printed fountain from Infinite Dimensions Games' Wightwood Abbey set. Happy with how it turned out, and as you can see, it's a sizable piece.

Monkeys! Love 'em.
Very impressed that you have kept this project ticking along, and a really like the addition of figures from so many ranges. Inspires me to branch out from that great (but a bit two-dimensional) Foundry collection I have.

Thanks Flinty, much appreciated! This has pretty much been my only/main project for the past five years or so, crazy. I love putting together stuff from different ranges, I've found that uniform basing and painting style ties things together wonderfully. The Foundry range is the best one out there in my opinion, but luckily there are loads of other great ranges too, all with their own strengths.
Love the eyes :-* :-* :-*
Thanks Mac! They're the window to the soul and so on...

I got to play a cooperative game of Flashing Steel with my wife, great fun! The scenario was a slave rebellion at a plantation, you can read a write-up here: https://dawnofthelead.com/2020/05/24/uprising-at-the-plantation/

Thanks Din and TheDilfy!
The cat does like to be around whenever we're doing things, so I figured the internet needs yet another cat photo. Glad to hear that the project serves as inspiration!
