Title: Badab War: Mantis Warriors Apothecary (page 3)
Post by: Pizzagrenadier on May 06, 2015, 04:47:59 AM
Hey folks,

I updated the blog on the first part of the Badab War project. First up is Captain Corvin of the 3rd company. I'll be working on the rest of the HQ to follow then the first of the Tactical Squads, then some Fire Hawks after that.

This project is a dream project for me and a lot of fun stuff and projects from friends are coming together for this. It will eventually involve large forces for (not) 40k (using modified DHC7B), Battlefleet Gothic, and Space Hulk to fight a Badab War campaign. I love the new beakie mk 6 parts that come in the new Tactical Box. Between trading and getting parts online and scrounging I have been able to put together enough beakies to do this project right. I call it neu-old school. Making old school armies with new parts.

Here is the Captain.

Nice scheme, though, if I could offer some advice I'd say you need to thin your paints a little.

That is a totally AWE-sum Mantis Marine! :)

There are more Mk.6 parts in the newest Tactical box? I might have to get 1 or 2. Loves me some Beakies. :D

There are some mk 6 parts in the box, but to get an all mk 6 squad, you'll have to supplement with bits and trades.

The tactical box has:

2 mk 6 chests.

2 mk 6 beakie helmets.

4 mk 6 legs.

And, unfortunately, only one mk 6 set of shoulder pads (one smooth and one with bolts).

Hope that helps :)

@Pizzagrenadier - it does, thanx. :)

I usually put 2-3 Mk. VI in every squad. I have a few more than that in my Space Wolves, because the old accessory sprue had the best Mk. VI chest piece.

Need to get back at them, I'm a much, much more skilled painter than when I originally did my Space Marines.

Boy howdy is that true for me too! My first beakies were Crimson Fists painted with Testors enamels applied with toothpicks. My second box was Flesh Eaters only marginally better painted with Armory paints and brushes.

My original Mantis Warriors were a little better painted than that. But not by much.

XD I found a few of my first Marines. Let me get a squad done, and I'll post a compare-and-contrast. :)

That sounds good. Looking forward to seeing the side by side. I lost track of my old stuff years ago all except for one Ork Weirdboy.

Ah, the Mantis Warriors! I did a batch of these up waaay back when using the first generation plastic Space Wombles, plus a hover tank made from plastic late 70s-vintage microwave dinner plates (Budget Gourmet IIRC) to match... perhaps I'll have to reconstitute the old unit for nostalgia's sake, as your splendid rendering is quite inspiring to say the very least... 8)

Great minds think alike Leland! I remember making a taxi/pizza delivery/civilian car out of an orange juice concentrate container. I wish I still had that  :)

Suber: Thanks! They're on the way! I'm working on the company banner, medic, and the sergeant for the first squad now. I'll post an update when those guys are done :)

It's amazing what one can do with a couple of 1970s-vintage plastic microwave dinner plates:

Or now, a broken down computer mouse:

Looking forward to seeing your full on Mantis Warriors force completed... it's getting my own creative Rogue Trader wheels and gears moving... 8)

Nice! Been admiring your kitbashing, trashbashing, and conversion sci fi work since last year when I found your blog. Great stuff! You use materials and parts I never would have even thought about using. I think you used a whole aisle at a craft store in some of those :) I mean that in a good way.

Glad I could get the Rogue Trader itch going again. Thanks!

No, thank YOU, kind sir! Your fetching Mantis Warrior captain has indeed given me an itch I must scratch... 8)

Quick update. This time a Fire Hawks sergeant. I'm not too happy with the emblem on the shoulder pad yet. I want to rework it a little. That hawk is hard to paint.

More to come.

Fire Hawks! AWE-sum!

One quibble, if you don't mind: did you mean to make the cord & tassel around his forearm the same color as the arm? I think it would look better gilded. Just IMHO, and he is great. :)

Oh snap! I forgot to paint the tassle! (and the skull on the chainsword hand too...) I wasn't sure what color I wanted to do at the time. Now I'm thinking black for the company color. I think I'm settled on 5th company which is black per codex. I had already painted the flat plate on the backpack with the background as black, then with the squad number in contrasting color, and the name plate above it.

Black would be cool, maybe with a this metallic wash to glitter it up. :)

So the Mantis Warriors weren't enough, so now you have to razzle-dazzle us all with the Firehawks?! You's a hard man, PG! I like it! :D

You planning Howling Griffons as well? I'd like to do Griffons in camouflage....hmmm. :)
Title: Re: Badab War: Fire Hawks Sergeant (page 2)
Post by: Pizzagrenadier on May 11, 2015, 02:42:46 AM
Anna: that's a good idea about the metallic wash. I'll try it on a test piece.

No plans for Howling Griffons, but their camo is really cool. I am planning on a Mantis Warrior Tranquility campaign sniper unit in yellow with dark green or black markings. Scoped bolters with an extended barrel. My friend is doing Sons of Medusa and another is doing Lamenters. I want to do some guest pics on the blog when they get some stuff done.

Blackwidow: I'm enjoying the Badab War immensely. It really gets the creative juices flowing...

If I'm really feeling sassy down the line, the Space Sharks errr I mean "Carcharadons" might make an appearance. Muahahaha!

Sweet. :) Maybe *I* should do a unit of Griffons?

I'm actually re-building my Blood Angels, but literally I'm doing it as a 2nd Edition force. I found my metal Captain Tycho, he's about 1/2 done. :)

Anna: 2nd edition Blood Angels? That sounds awesome. Post some pics when you get a chance. Love to see Tycho. I like the older Blood Angels style before they made them too over the top vampire like they are now.

Warburton: Mantis Warriors sergeant, company standard, and medic are in process :)

Awesome! :) He certainly looks the part. Mantis Warriors have that "look", you know? Predatory. Remember when we just called Apothecaries, Marine Medics?

Speaking of, I found my RT-era Ultramarine Medic. I'll post my own thread eventually, but let's say I wasn't *quite* the painter I am now. XD

Thanks everyone! I was a little nervous about doing the white on this guy, but GW White Scar thinned down covers pretty well And I didn't run into many problems with paint getting too thick.

I'm looking forward to doing the banner, but still haven't decided what I want to go on it besides the chapter badge. Definitely something with the Maelstrom Warders from their background fluff.

I do remember them being called medics. I still don't like the name apothecary much...I keep thinking of a drugstore.

Looking forward to that thread Anna :)

Hey. :) I found enough stuffs around the house to re-build a Space Wolf force, 2nd Edition Codex Space Wolves-style. :)

I need to get some paint Payday, then I'm in business. :)

Yes, Y'all inspired me with this Old Skool, RT-era, Marine awesomeness. :)

Excellent! You can do the Space Wolf campaign from the Chapter Approved: Book of the Astronomicon when typy hey them painted. I've never played those scenarios but they always looked fun.

Oooh, I don't have that one. :) I started just before 2nd Edition box was released. I even found an old metal Ulrik the Slayer. :D

"Feed the Wolf, Brothers." XD

I'm going to do the old Blackmane Company, with all the Viking-style shoulder pads and such. :)

Oh nice. The Bkackmane company was sharp looking. 2nd edition was probably the time I liked the look of the Space Wolves most. Enough viking to look good, not too over the top.

For Russ!

Most of my Marines are 3rd Edition plastics w/ the 3rd Edition Space Wolf Accessories, I found a few old metals, too.

I'm going to make a new plastic Ragnar Blackmane, the old one is so flat-posed, I'm going to use a plastic Commander as the base figure, give him some life. :)

Just waiting for 10AM to spray prime some Marines. :)
