Title: Crusaders - for Saga C&C
Post by: Michi on June 14, 2015, 07:56:19 PM

The County of Tripoli was a crusader state in alliance with the kingdom of Jerusalem. The heraldry sported a golden cross with red interior on red ground. I painted the flag and surcoats according to that. The miniatures will either make 2 points of knights or 1 point of infantry on the crusader battle board for Saga - Crescent & Cross.

I like them better in close-up  :)

That is a very striking heraldry Michael. i think I shall have to add another Fireforge knight to my small feudal collection, using that very same pattern  8)

On with the crusaders for Saga C&C! We decided to play the old system more often in 2018 before the new one gets its feet to the ground.
Here they are: 1 point of sergeants of the Knights Templar:

Michi, in my 'umble opinion try one in either khaki or sand. To be fair it's nowt to do with me as they're your models, but to me, the green looks very seventies Warhammer!

:)

You hit the nail. Itīs green due to gaming and blending on a GW static grass mat...  ::)
However I do prefer playing on a proper desert table with them and will therefore consider painting the edges to blend with the base itself.

Thank you!  :)

Excellent muted red Michi, I might give that a go.

I usually go for over the top bright and hope it doesn't look too orange.

I don't mind the green- compliments the sand base nicely 8), however my preference these days is black edges on bases (it goes with everything!).

I do like black on the rims of the bases, it sets them apart from the table. Like this:

or you can do this and have them blend in

I did a test on the first of the Knights Templar. I like the khaki better than the green, but would hardly go any lighter. What do you think?

Looks better than the green for sure.

Why don't you want to go any lighter though? I think lighter would look better!

Though I would put my vote in for black edges - that's what I do.

A dark rich brown could also work well...

And oh yeah... nice minis!

The brown does not convince me completely. Your bases seem to look sand toned with grass and the gaming surface looks like a grass mat too. I think I would in fact have preferred green edges in that case.

Very nicely painted figures and the banners are superb.

Bases seem to polarise people, you can only do what appeals to you.

My only thought would be if you want to hide the side of the base have you considered taking the basing  texture and colour down the sides as well as on top of the base?
Title: Re: Crusaders - for Saga C&C
Post by: Michi on January 09, 2018, 10:17:57 AM
have you considered taking the basing  texture and colour down the sides as well as on top of the base?

I like my miniatures being "framed" by their bases. That looks better off table when on display, I think.
I believe I will be sticking with the khaki edges on these. Repainted all of them yesterday and will do that on my formerly finished crusaders and pirates too (basically all those based on "sand")...

Thanks to all for opinions and advice! This is why I like the LAF that much.  :)

To be fair they don't convince me much either, I just wanted away from that seventies green look! The gaming surfaces are blocks of polystyrene, green one one side and desert coloured on the other, they look a bit cartoonish but kind of fit the old skool' style wargamin I've gone back to! Here's the terrien thingys turned over for a Crudator and Saracen tonking match...

Thereīs not too much difference, I think. Therefore I take that it works now. However I thought about grinding the base down to make it thinner.

Thanks!

I kept on painting the edges khaki now:

One point worth of Saga:

And another point:

Now my mounted Templars alone assemble an army of 5 points in Saga terms. 1 point for each detachment of four knights and 1 point for the eight sergeants. Together with the sergeants on foot thatīs 7 points already. I have to do a few crossbows too to have a little choice for composition of my "task force Jerusalem"...

These are great! The deep red and bright yellow color scheme is very striking! Did you make any adjustments for running a 12 point game or did you use the rules as is? The default 8 saga dice limit and the restrictions on repeat uses of advanced abilities seem like they might impede large scale battles like this.

We played a four player C&C, each with his hown Battle Board and set of Saga Dice and rolled for initiative each turn. The only restriction was never to attack the ally. A lot of talking, tactics, negotiations, confusion and fun!
