Title: Some of my Chinese in the Back of Beyond
Post by: marianas_gamer on August 19, 2015, 08:36:29 AM
During the last weekend, when the typhoon was passing to the north, I was able to paint up the first of my warlord Chinese troops. I am pretty pleased with them, though my eyesight just isn't good enough to get really good facial details like Joe Kano has been able to with his troops. As for painting five color hat pins, forgedda about it! I am also not so happy with the collar tabs but I think that the bases, which are my standard for the BOB came out well. So here are my first 10. All of them lovingly smuggled past my good wife.

I know from this angle that many of the faces are shadowed so just to prove that yes I did paint them.

Good looking figures.
I hope, the first of many we get to see.
May I suggest a wash of a darker color on the leggings.
Would make them stand out.
Excellent work on the basing.

Nice work.

I've been wondering about a good "catch all" basing color scheme for BoB, I like your's and may have to borrow it.

Gotta say how much I like those bases!

I'm a huge fan of the muddy gravely look when I base my 15mm troops. You totally nailed it here.

Cheers.

So here is the next battalion for the Dog Meat General.  These fellows in fur caps. I'm happy with them but I'm afraid that my photographic skills are even more poor than usual.(http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s360/marianas_gamer/Chinese%20Inf%20w%20Caps%202_zps3pjbaubi.jpg) (http://s511.photobucket.com/user/marianas_gamer/media/Chinese%20Inf%20w%20Caps%202_zps3pjbaubi.jpg.html)
and another of them in action defending a warehouse containing another extraordinary tax so that the Dog Meat General can support concubine #52 or was that #53?

Thanks much fellows! So here are some more recruits for the Dogmeat General. Some may think that these are Do or Die troops but he has correctly identified them as Railroad Police. As great a terror to passengers and freight forwarders as they are to any bandits. So pay up!
(http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s360/marianas_gamer/Chinese%20Railroad%20Police%20_zpsujwxmnw1.jpg) (http://s511.photobucket.com/user/marianas_gamer/media/Chinese%20Railroad%20Police%20_zpsujwxmnw1.jpg.html)
Here they are in action in another fly blown railroad station

And again....

A reserve company is next on the painting table and then a local spear levy. Than Americans.....

They are fearsome looking bunch I'll grant you :-*

I love their baggage on stacked up on the platform I rather fear the hat box and trunks contain something more gruesome than than a change of linen. :-* :-*

Don't think I would like to catch a train in your neck of the woods, those Railroad Police are pretty scary guys.

The glimpses of your terrain are intriguing, especially this and the previous post, have you posted bigger pictures of them elsewhere?  :)

Hi LB

Thanks for your quick reply, you have some very nice buildings there, I especially like the colours of the mud brick village.

I don't suppose you have the colour palette you used do you.

I have a plan to build something similar but I don’t seem to have the eye for mixing colours to match real buildings. I’ve just repainted some logs cabins for the 3rd time and still not happy with them, they look pretty enough but not true to life.

Don’t mean to derail your thread, keep up the good work.

Take care

John

Vagabond,
I use the same paint combination for all of my mud brick buildings and structures to give uniformity. I figure since they are built of local mud they all have the same composition.  All start with an undercoating of flat black Rustoleum spray paint. After that I use craft paints. I initially used them because they were all that were available here on Guam (another kind of Back of Beyond as Paul just pointed out) but have found that with proper mixing they usually match the more expensive paints except for flesh tones and they are quite inexpensive. The Tramp Steamer fees here are murder so this is much appreciated  lol.
The initial layer is Anita's Chocolate Brown, followed by Anita's Coffee, and finished with Anita's Nubby Linen. Unfortunately, Anita's no longer produces Nubby Linen so I will soon have to mix to match. Cheers.

Thanks for the info. The colour charts on line only show chocolate, so it looks like coffee maybe off as well as nubby linen :'(

Doesn't look as if we get Anita's in the UK but there is a brand called Americana which I'll investigate
Cheers

Thanks Paul!
Here is one of the Dogmeat Generals' Reserve Companies under the watchful eye of their commander and a staff officer.  Although these are not equivalent to his front line companies they are perfectly fine for cracking peasant heads and "containing" local protests and demonstrations. Notice that they could not find a uniform tunic in stores for the big guy.

(http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s360/marianas_gamer/Chinese%20Reserve%20Company%201_zpsbf2a3eds.jpg) (http://s511.photobucket.com/user/marianas_gamer/media/Chinese%20Reserve%20Company%201_zpsbf2a3eds.jpg.html)

Here they are deployed in garrison ready to quell disturbances, perhaps over that new tax to cover the Generals' gambling losses?

(http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s360/marianas_gamer/Chinese%20Reserve%20Company%202_zpsogb4gaqv.jpg) (http://s511.photobucket.com/user/marianas_gamer/media/Chinese%20Reserve%20Company%202_zpsogb4gaqv.jpg.html)

Comments and critiques always welcome. I personally think that some of the faces need improvement but this perhaps reflects  the quality of the troops  lol

Very nice work! How did you model the long-leaved vegetation that appears in the first couple of pictures?
Title: Re: Some of my Chinese in the Back of Beyond

Some new cannon fodder for the Dog Meat General. This time a village spear levee. This is the first time that I have used steel spears, definitely not the last though.  I can assure you that no matter the morale of these troops they are eager to get stuck in!.... if the enthusiasm for which they stabbed their painter counts for anything  lol

(http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s360/marianas_gamer/2016-04-25%2013.02.08_zpsq0zsdz6b.jpg) (http://s511.photobucket.com/user/marianas_gamer/media/2016-04-25%2013.02.08_zpsq0zsdz6b.jpg.html)

Here they are in action. Fierce in defense of their town but destined to roll on the ground with lead in their guts.

(http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s360/marianas_gamer/2016-04-25%2013.11.58_zpsvnqnrjil.jpg) (http://s511.photobucket.com/user/marianas_gamer/media/2016-04-25%2013.11.58_zpsvnqnrjil.jpg.html)

Another action shot.

(http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s360/marianas_gamer/2016-04-25%2013.12.36_zpsnnoqybty.jpg) (http://s511.photobucket.com/user/marianas_gamer/media/2016-04-25%2013.12.36_zpsnnoqybty.jpg.html)

I am pretty pleased with how the bamboo spears turned out. They were fiddly but worth the effort to my mind.

WuZhuiQiu, sorry to take so long to respond to your question.  The long leaved vegetation is from a Chinese made grass matt that I bought at a craft store. Similar matts are used by other folks for fields etc. However, I have never found another of these nor seen one.  I cut strips from the matt, glued them to craftboard, spackeled for weight and texture and painted everything. Spackeling has kept the edges from curling very well.

Next on the painting table are some Americans from the Siberian Expedition and then back to the Chinese, probably more poor bloody Infantry.

The figures are fine but I really like the bases on the first lot - that combo of two shades of mud seems to work extremely well. Like other responders, I intend to try it myself on my 54mm figures...

So I worked on the Siberian AEF for a while but have them to the side for the nonce. After all this is my self declared year of the Warlord Chinese! So here are a company of Chinese Student Militia from Crucible Crush formerly Pulp Figures. I have posted two of these fellas in the BOB Painting Club but I figure that any more would be redundant. So here are the rest of these fellows depicted in situ in far Manchuria.
(http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s360/marianas_gamer/2016-09-18%2021.00.20_zpszdilvwz4.jpg) (http://s511.photobucket.com/user/marianas_gamer/media/2016-09-18%2021.00.20_zpszdilvwz4.jpg.html)
Stay tuned I have a Chinese supply column, Chinese support weapons, another company of Chinese Infantry, Chinese bandits/insurgents, and of course Siberian AEF on the painting table!

Some of the Dogmeat General's logistics corps, in other words some poor bloody peasants doing hard, unpaid work for the greater glory of the  generalissimo (and to keep their village from being torched).

The Dogmeat General's logistic corps continues to grow, transporting rice, beans, and bullets off the rails and into the hinterland.

There are 5 more on the painting table so the corps will continue to grow. Somewhere there are 28mm women and children weeping and burning incense over the Dogmeat General's "recruitment" effort.

Paul, it is true that there are not many union organizers in the Dogmeat General's sector of the Back of Beyond. Organizers of the proletariat tend to take more direct action in areas under his rule  lol lol. The bridge is an aquarium piece that I picked up a few years ago up on Saipan.

Lon (Lobster Boy),

Very nice indeed !

Nice paint job, nice terrain.  Decorative porcelain, or 'Fish Tank Thing' ?

I'm a sucker for the Copplestone Chinese Warlord riflemen in caps,
not fur hats.  If you putty over the puttees, to give them long trousers, they make great Federales.

Many compliments,

I apologize for the particularly poor photography on these fellows. They were moving quickly to avoid local bandits. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Local Bandits are now on my painting table. My resolve to switch to Darkest Africa has been tested and fallen short.

Thanks fellows! Here are the last two of the Dogmeat Generals' Logistics Corps for the foreseeable future. These are the poor bastards on punishment detail. For those of you uneducated foreign devils that can't read Chinese the placards on the cases say explosives (or at least Google assures that it does). Needless to say no one wants to cuddle up to these guys in any circumstance. They tend to have a short but glorious life in the Dogmeat Generals' service.

It has taken quite a while but I finally have worked my way through this group and I am happy with them. Next on my painting table I have 40 Chinese bandits but my copy of Congo finally arrived and my many forest tribesmen, witchdoctors, and pygmies are beckoning. Choices, choices......

The Dogsmeat General should be able to shift some supplies with this amount of manpower. :)

The Dogmeat General's provinces are becoming infested with bandits! Is it because of the taxes, the looting, the alienation of the peasants from the means of production?!? Never you mind, the solution is to raise taxes again! Here are the first 5, 35 more to go, and then the mounted bandits!

The situation within the Dogmeat General's western provinces worsens as the bandit leadership improves and cadres develop. Looks like there is nothing to do but raise taxes and actually pay one or two of his battalions. Of course, some of that can be skimmed off for that new blue silk uniform with jeweled medals that he has been eyeing.

Your thread has really motivated me. I'm plodding away seven figures into some 'Pulp' Chinese ( more cinematic than historic.) wondering if my daft interpretations had any place.
Definitely feel like carrying on with them now,and I'm intrigued as to what you come up with next.

Thanks all! I recommend all to see the excellent work being done on Chinese Warlord units in the current LPL. Some damn fine painting! Anyway, on to the latest post about the ongoing activities within the Dogmeat General's AOR...…..

It looks to be another poor harvest in the Dogmeat General's provinces. The General refers to this as Hostess Season. He routinely sends his troops around buying up younger daughters of the peasantry to work in his silk factories in Shanghai and to act as his "hostesses" in some of his more unsavory institutions. Yes, he is a pig (hate the General and not your dear Narrator). Inevitably this spawns a new group of bandits to plague the peasants and stir the somnolent Provincial Militia to work. Here is the newest group of bully boys to wreak havoc in these benighted section of the Back of Beyond.

(http://i.imgur.com/X4oOKIo.jpg) (https://imgur.com/X4oOKIo)

They have joined up withan established bandit group that so far has eluded the less than sterling efforts of the Dogmeat Generals' Reserve Infantry company and his Railroad Police.

(http://i.imgur.com/qVPvFdD.jpg) (https://imgur.com/qVPvFdD)

Attached are also some pictures of the local bandits making a nuisance of themselves within the province. I know that it looks like they will overwhelm the local spear levee. However, remember that most of the bandits have two or three bullets between them. Never mind the many ammunition bandoleers. They are merely wishful thinking. The spear levee are fighting for their homes and harvests and their pointy spear (yes, I know that they are pikes) require no reloads.  In addition, the bandits are reluctant to get stuck in, as wounded bandits tend to become abandoned corpses in short order.

Bandit problems continue to bedevil the Dogmeat General's provinces. Surely it can not be because of his less than benevolent taxation policies? Oh well, a warlord general has got to eat, compete with his fellow warlords, and keep his concubines in jade and pearls. On the other end of the social spectrum it appears that the peasants are getting restless and willing to pick up any old piece of sharpened ironmongery in order to transfer the wealth to their own pockets. Here are some of those fellows in the flesh.

The pictures may appear to be a bit blurry because they were taken over the shoulder at the run. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Hi Lon - I've not been on the forum much recently but I see the Dogs Meat General still has some pretty nasty people working for him, and the ones working against him are even worse.

I can see why the camera was shaking as you ran away. Maybe fighting retreat would be a better way of putting it.

Thanks Fellas! I am currently exercising my alter-ego, Fu Manchu, in the Samarkand Imperative game so I have been moving a little slower with the painting. I think that an equestrian unit will be next and that will be a first for me so it might take a while. To tide you over, here are some poorly shot photographs of the Dogmeat Generals AOR. I blame it on the cordite and shrapnel in the air, but I always do, don't I lol

I have been remiss in posting on the Dog Meat General's provinces. Part of that time was taken up in leading Fu Manchu to total victory and mystic domination in the city of Samarkand, part of the time was spent dealing with a pirate outbreak in the South China Sea and the Dutch East Indies, and then there was all that work on Borneo and the Dayak menace there...……..   I am currently turning back to the Dog Meat General's AOR (unless one of my buddies gets off his posterior and finally decides to enter into the anti-pirate fray in the South China Sea, though I imagine his steamer's bottom has rusted out through inaction). Here is a glimpse of a (freshly painted) store, storehouse, and orchard in the province in the sweet season of early summer when everything looks possible.,,,,

…..before the heartbreak of late summer floods and droughts, harvest time tax collectors, and winter bandit season. By next spring the owner will be lucky if he still retains a partially burned building and a couple of well hidden sacks of rice. That's the way it is in the provinces.

Time moves slowly these days in the Dogmeat General's area of responsibility. The Tong have been interfering with the 3rd Extraordinary Emergency Tax supporting fallen singsong girls. Still the funds will be raised for this important social cause! Here is a candid (and quite covert) photo of a back alley Tong conclave.

(http://i.imgur.com/NMvBtW1.jpg) (https://imgur.com/NMvBtW1)

Here is a glimpse of one of the prime economic engines of the Dogmeat General's regime. These wharves allow the smuggling…errr export of various...…err commodities that allow the glorious and enlightened reign of the dear leader. The smoky, grease stained tugboat is a recent, previously owned, addition to the General's fleet. (The previous owners donated it for the greater good in exchange for retaining various appendages) I can guarantee you that there are only broken dreams and empty gin bottles to be found on the interior. as it is searched daily for contraband.

After years of hidden and nefarious actions and heavy tax burdens within the Dog Meat General's provinces a picture of mounted banditry has been smuggled out.

The Dog Meat General assures all that the situation is under control and the appropriate people (probably meaning our humble jounalist) have been punished.
