>:DI start this thread to get all my future Game of Thrones figures in one place. Makes it more convenient I think.
Inspired by Richards Jamie Lannister I started to do my own figure on horseback and on foot. He is accompanied by his bodyguard of houseold heavy knights.

Ah great to see you in the Fantasy boards now!
Great Jamie Lannister!
-
Wow, they look great Tom, well done. The addition of the big Fireforge shields to the Perry armoured men at arms really makes them look Game of Thrones-like :-*
-
Thanks . Am looking forward to painting the golden armor !!
-
Good stuff - I like what you've done with the hair. :)
-
They look great.thanks for sharing
-
Looking good! Love what you've done with the shields as the good Captain has already mentioned. :)
-
just bisected the Jamie figure . So expect painted pictures after the weekend!
-
sorry should have been "basecoated"
-
just bisected the Jamie figure.
sorry should have been "basecoated"
lol
(I wouldn't know the German for bisected or basecoated, so I think, like most of your countrymen, you should be proud of your excellent command of a foreign language!)
-
thanks for the compliment!
-
I finished painting Jamie Lannister for more pictures go here: https://wargamesgazette.wordpress.com or here: https://wargamesgazette.wordpress.com/a-game-of-thrones-lannister-army/

I've made similar conversions for my own Lannisters, haven't painted them yet though.
Yours look great, both conversion and painting!
-
I got a Tyrion Lannister figure from my son who did the conversion. I will paint him up occasionally

Excellent. Well done Fynn.
I'm thinking along similar lines :)
-
He looks great! I like that one much better than the "official" one.
-
Excellent - looking forward to see him painted.

here is the next sergeant only one more to go!

Ooooh - I like the all-red armour. I am so stealing that idea :)
A nice looking collection shaping up now, Tom.
-
I was not so sure about the red armor. I painted it by mixing a red with metal medium . Next time I will try a red wash on a silver basecoat. Will do that on the right shoulder guard of my Tyrion figure. Should be finished by the beginning of next week.
-
I agree with the Captain, the red armour is really cool! I'm gonna do my Lannister generals (Tywin and Kevan) in red i think
-
I just realized that I forgot to post pictures of the knight leading the foot sergeants.
I tried to paint him in red armour. I mixed red paint with a metal medium and finished with red washes.
How would you paint colored armour?
Anyway here is a picture more as usual on my blog.[img width=631 height=800]http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b317/tomrommel/rk1.jpg~original/img] (http://s22.photobucket.com/user/tomrommel/media/rk1.jpg.html)
-
I am going to try this.
Blue armour is easy because you can get gunmetal blue paint.
For red, I'm wondering about copper with some red ink mixed in... There must be a way.
It's a bold stroke anyway Tom, well done :)
-
Thanks Richard.
And here Tyrion Lannister:

and for a size comparison with the red knight:[URL=http://s22.photobucket.com/user/tomrommel/media/Tyrion%20red%20knight.jpg.html][img width=800 height=641]http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b317/tomrommel/Tyrion%20red%20knight.jpg~original) (http://s22.photobucket.com/user/tomrommel/media/Tyrion2.jpg.html)
more as usual here:https://wargamesgazette.wordpress.com
-
What a lovely collection, all really well painted. That red armour looks great and ties in nicely with the lannister soldiers in the tv series. Your son did a really good job converting the halfman. Thanks for sharing
-
At first I thought the Red Knight was a Bolton, because it looked like pink rather than red.
-
Thats exactly why I will do the next set of red armour differently . normal white harness with red washes. Will show the result when finished.
-
I like the animation that comes with the Baendchen on the lances. :)
-
Thanks for the coments. I am really proud of the Tyrion conversion my son did.

The Lannister heavy knights banner bearer.
I gave him a banner with a gold colored lion instead of the usual yellow one as Jaime is famous for his golden armour and I wanted to have a different banner for his personal banner bearer in comparison to the usual Lannister banners I have in my army.

Nicely painted additions. Thanks for sharing your progress
-
Really awesome looking!!
What o you use to make your banners? They all look really good!
-
Oooh. I like him, Tom. Great looking banner :-*
-
For my banners I use tin foil and paper. I draw the design on paper with a pencil then I scan the design and reverse it with a graphics program like paint or gimp to get the other side identical to the drawn one . I hope that is understandable.
I am thinking about doing a tutorial on my blog when I can find the time.
-
Very nice mate. Can you show us your Tyrion if you have painted it?

or a Lannister archer unit (from Perry plastics).

Well done! 8)

That is a FINE LOOKING array of BEAUTIFULLY painted & based miniatures. The LOVELY background scenery shows them off WONDERFULLY. OUTSTANDING WORK!
-
They look great. Really bright pageantry suitable for such a showy house as the Lannisters. Thanks for sharing

Nicely done mate!

Thank you all!
Here is another addition to my growing GoT collection. The start of a Stark Sergeants unit for Lion /Dragon Rampant.

I just realized that I forgot to post pictures of the knight leading the foot sergeants.
I tried to paint him in red armour. I mixed red paint with a metal medium and finished with red washes.
How would you paint colored armour?
I rather like the red armour, but if you are after getting a red metallic look I'd try some red ink over a bright silver. Using a red wash isn't as effective because it isn't transparent enough and the metallic sheen doesn't shine through properly.
Alternatively, for a warmer red, try making a light gold base (adding a little bright silver to a bright gold), and then inking over with a clear red.
Finally, you can actually buy red metallic paint - as in red, not a bronze or copper. I'm pretty sure that Reaper, Vallejo, and Coat D'Arms all make such a paint. This a lot more pigmented than adding metallic medium to a red paint or ink yourself, and it lets the armour look more lacquered. Whilst the metallic red may look a bit bright, there is nothing stopping you shading it with ink or a wash as normal (I think a soft sepia ink could add a bit of warmth and shading).
Hope that gives you something to mull over if you fancy trying red armour again! :)
-
thanks for the idea Major!

Great collection Tom, and the scenic setting works very well.
-
Yes I am very pleased with it.

Nice. I might use those figs for some Greyjoy reinforcements. Only bows in my current retinue configuration are 2 units of scouts (bidowers) as I make up that any self respecting Ironborn wants to get stuck in and bash it out with sword or axe. Archery is for boys and tough women. (Asha excepted)

Iron men should indeed get in close!! ;)

And the beginning of a completely different Army:
I started to do a White Walker army for my GoT Dragon Rampant games. As I could get some White Walker lookalikes ,from Stronghold called Draugr of the North, I wanted to do some Wights for them . I used sprues from Mantic, their skelis, Perry,Fireforge, Gripping Beast and an old GW Skeli sprue . Of course greenstuff was used too.

Nice take on Ironborn!

Yes Richard it was Fynn.
I always try to keep the painting time a regular incident in my daily routine as far as I can. In my job I have to talk to at least 80 persons per day so I am very thankful for time where I don't have to talk and can do something completely different.

BTW how historically accurate is a left handed archer? I've been looking at the parts to make one in the conquest set and wondered whether to use them for the sake of variety, but wondered if everyone would have been trained to shot the same way despite being a leftie?

Like the Stark archer. :)

Thumbs up!
I am going to try this one model at a time for my next unit to see if it gives me more sense of accomplishment and momentum.
-
For me it is more fun to be able to finish a model in an evening or two then to paint away at 6 or 12 models at the same time as it takes so much longer to actually finish them then. For me keeps up the painting mojo ;)

Nice, very productive!
I've been doing my painting in batches, but think I might actually give your method a go. I was able to do 5, 6, 7, 8 or more in one week, but lately I just haven't been able to achieve it, and most batches end up taking up to 2 weeks. At my most productive I did 10 in one week. But in reality, the batch of 8 I'm doing now is coming up to 2 weeks....
I'm gonna see if I can paint one figure from start to finish in one evening. Will be interesting if I can!
-
I always paint one figure in an evening , at least I try! It doesn't work out every time but you get a result more often which I think is more rewarding!

Agreed, just compare the Tom's two Conquest archers to his two Perry archers above on this page. No contest!
-
Yes indeed they are not very good when compared with Perrys archers as you say. This will be the only unit I will do with them. I will use the bows and other equipment with some plastic Orks I have for another Dragon Rampant army. Other archers will be done with the Hundred years war set by the Perrys. I already started on some Glover ones.
Alas here is the next one ! Only one more to do now!

That's really wonderfull!!!

Looking great Tomrommel!

Excellent group shot. Lovely and very caracterful force too.
-
thank you all !
-
Very, very nice.
Forgive me if you have mentioned elsewhere, as tbh a lot of the time I scroll through just for the pictures, but what rules are you planning on using?
-
Great. An army built (literally) one man at a time! :)
-
I am using Dragon Rampant by Osprey. A rules set for skirmish games with as much fantasy as you like. In my case Dragons , white walkers, a certain red sorceress!
The system is extremely open concerning the more fantastic rules and it plays very fast. Hope that helps.
-
That's a fine looking
money er group shot :)))
Just had a shifty through the build up and there's some great modelling in here.

25+ years of batch painting and I feel like I have a huge collection of 95% finished models and nothing finished... perhaps the one man at a time approach is the way to go? :? :D

That is exactly the reason why I started only one or two minis at a time. I used to do batch painting but after a while you have to many half finished miniatures :(

Ahhh nice. How do you plan to make them stand out from the Starks? Just with colours, or will you be using different models?
-
Here is the Start of the House Glover troops. I will build them with the Perry HYW English and french set. And the occasional fire forge figure.

Nicely done sigil, Tom!
Say more about what you have planned for your Glover contingent. A unit of six mounted knights to bulk out your Stark retinue or something more?
Inquiring minds want to know!
-
First will be a mixed unit of spearmen and archers. You can have mixed units in Dragon Rampant and I want to try out how they work. Next might be 4 or 6 light horse banner men of House Glover and then I will do another house afiliated to house Lannister.
Here is the first spearman:
The sigil is done differently. I wanted to try out decals by Schildschmie.de . I am not so sure about the result. I painted over the transfer . Maybe I will do freehand again on the next unit.
-
I like that, but not sure why you painted over the decal, the paint looks too thick.
Is there a reason why the fist is a left hand? Does it have sinister connotations?
-
Nice, but are you gonna play with this or you just paint for the pleasure of it?
-
It is a left hand fist as thats the way the decal comes. I painted over it as normally I paint all my heraldry as freehand . This is the first time I used decals.
No I use them for games , too. But I have to confess that I rarely game because of time constrains. When we play we use Dragon Rampant as a rules system.
-
Tomrommel1, I like the spearman. I think the all-white fist works better than the one with black outlining.
-
thanks for the input. I was thinking about blackening the fist but for now I will do the others like this one first and then decide if blackening is better or not.
-
sorry should read black lining not Blackening ( silly computer )

-
I hope you don't mind that according to GRR Martin the sigil for the Glovers is a mailed fist, not a gauntleted one as shown on the ASOIAF Wiki. Depends if you want to follow the TV series non-canon, or the canon sources ???
"the mailed fist of the glovers, silver on scarlet" (G.O.T. p.550)
-
A nice model, Tom :)
-
I echo the good Cp'n. These are nicely put together and well presented units. I too like the aketons and jacks best... :D. I hope I can equally do my Lannisters justice...
-
Thanks for the replies . Yes I know there are different sources regarding the sigil . I will stick to the gauntlet as I like it more then an armored fist.

I build 6 new knights for a Glover light cavalry unit for Lion Rampant. There will be Glover knights and knights from other houses who serve House Glover. So the sigils will not be all the same.
This is the officer of the unit. I built him from Perry and Fireforge parts. The body is cut in half at the waist the lower body is from Fireforge the upper body from the Perry light Cav. set The Arms are fire forge the head is from Perry. The Feathers are from my bits box ( I think from a GW helmet). The horse is a fire forge one with a Perry horse head. This knight will be from House Forester. ( Sigil will be a Tree green and brown on a red field). As there is no mentioning of the sigil of House Forester in the books I made it up myself.
The next one is a banner bearer. Built from a Perry light horse body and fire forge arms and helmet. The horse is a fire forge one again with a Perry head. This knight will be a House Glover household knight.
The next one will be a House Branch knight. As there is no description of the House Branch sigil in the books I made one up again . White field with red branch ( chanting heraldry). A strait build from the Perry light horse box except the shield it is from the Gripping Beast dark age warrior set. I cut of the boss to have more space for the sigil. I used these parts as I wanted to depict a knight who spend his youth in Dorne .
The next knight is another Glover household knight. A strait build from the light horse box by Perry with a Fireforge shield.
Next one is again a Perry light horse body with a firgeforge head and shield. This knight is from House Wood again chanting arms by myself as not mentioned in the books. 6 trees green and brown on a field white over red .
The last knight is from House Bole. Again no Sigil mentioned in the books. So I made one up again. A bole natural colors on a field white and red. A strait build from the Perry light horse set with a fire forge shield.
I tried to have some variations in the sigils but keep them together as a unit therefore the Glover colors as field in the arms of the different houses. The only mentioning of the houses above is in “Lady Sybelle Glover provides scouts from House Bole, Branch, forester and Wood to Stannis Baratheon for his march on Winterfell through the wolfs wood. (A Dance with Dragons, Chapter 42, The King’s Prize.)
I will post pictures of the painted knights when finished.
-
Sorry forgot there are more pictures of the knights on www.wargamesgazette.com
-
Great knight builds!
I like the use of those feathers on the first one.... I think they are from the WFB Empire Knights set, I remember having that back in the day. I might try and seek some of them out, I remember afixing them to the top of other helmets like you've done very easily...
-
A great selection of builds, Tom. Well done :-*
-
thanks !!
-
Great builds! How do you plan to represent the sigils for those Wolfswood houses/clans?
-
They will be painted as freehands . If that is what you wanted to know?
-
They will be painted as freehands . If that is what you wanted to know?
Could have guessed that from your already-abundantly displayed freehand brilliance. :P ;) I was more wondering how you will decide what their sigils look like, as I think only the one featured in the videogame (Forrester?) has been depicted or described.
-
That is true. I came up with my own ideas after all this is fantasy anyway. But I tried to keep it as close as possible to the rest of the known Sigils. Have a look at the captions of the pictures above . I wrote there how the sigils will look like when painted. I think I might manage to paint one or two at the coming weekend.

Great job on the CoA. I struggled with that one.
-
I started painting the sigils of the Glover Bannermen. As you asked here are the sigils of the houses. Normaly I paint one figure at a time but I wanted to see if the sigils I came up with would work together. I used Red or white or both of the colors on the sigils to conect them all with house Glover. Here they are:
House Forester:

Especially why he has that sort of heraldry.
-
What's your basis for the red stripe at the top of the shield? I ask not from a place of skepticism, but as one who doesn't really understand the rules and conventions of heraldry. Looks great though, House Brax are pretty important Westermen but it was sort of hard to tell in my mind if their sigil would look good in miniature. You've proved that pretty well here I'd say. :)
-
Nice figures! The Brat fellow looks particularly splendid.
What's your basis for the red stripe at the top of the shield? I ask not from a place of skepticism, but as one who doesn't really understand the rules and conventions of heraldry.
I'm guessing that it's the label denoting Flement as the heir to House Brax to differentiate himself from his father?
-
Nice! If I ever get round to doing the Westerlands, House Brax is at the top of my list.
House Brax are pretty important Westermen but it was sort of hard to tell in my mind if their sigil would look good in miniature.
Surely that's one of the few GRRM heraldries which can only look good??? A purple unicorn on a silver (white or light grey) field. Perfect!
-

You can toss the rules of western European heraldry out the window when it comes to GoT.
-
You can toss the rules of western European heraldry out the window when it comes to GoT.
Apparently so! It's a fantasy world so it seems harsh to criticise it for not meeting the requirements of our historical basis, but some of the GRRM stuff is just ugly and wouldn't likely have worked for the purpose it is supposed to portray. Still. Captain Blood proved that pink and red can look cool! :D
-
Indeed he did. I added the red bar to mark him as the third son of Lord Brax. I took this from real world heraldry as I thought it looks good. By the way to paint the real House Brax sigil on a shield that small seemed a bit to difficult for me. It is a unicorn rampant not the head of a unicorn. So all my fault when it looks a bit different then described in the books.
Here is the next figure a Brax Crossbowman:

I totally agree. I kind of like the freedom GoT renders the hobby heraldist. But it also makes you aware that the rules have not sprung up from nothing. I mean some things conceptually works or does not work. Umber on azure is a bitch, for example, while dark red on pink works quite well (cudos, Richard).

I think that the more you build them out of components from different brands the more they look like westerosis . As their armor and clothes is , at least in the TV series, a mix of all kind of medieval grab.

I've been waiting for that kit, among other things for that reason.
-
I really like the concept of those, and the dressing style as well. However, the sculpts tend to be on the bulky side - a bit discordant with the modern Perry plastic.
I guess i'll have to see some minis in flesh - or at least in a comparison pic - before judging.
-
Wouldn't that be down to the bulky nature of the clothes though? The Wildlings in the show also look large due to all the furs and padding.
-
Yes, looking forward to these. Should be very useful. And a different sculptor this time, so hopefully an even better look.
-
The figures posted on that page are also the metals, and not the box contents. That being said, the current crop of excellent Frostgrave kits are definitely bulkier than similar Perry Miniatures.
-
Brilliant! Now all I need to find is suitable giants and mammoths and we're away ;D

The figures posted on that page are also the metals, and not the box contents. That being said, the current crop of excellent Frostgrave kits are definitely bulkier than similar Perry Miniatures.
That's my issue with them. On the other hand, i could use them for a totally unrelated faction, and the difference in proportions won't be that evident. It's quite a shame - however - loosing the possibility to kitbash! :(
-
To each their own I guess. My experience has been that they kitbash just fine.
-
To each their own I guess. My experience has been that they kitbash just fine.
Me too. The Frostgrave stuff works fine with the Perry and Fireforge medievals. The later Perry WOTR sets are a bit taller and so are the HYW sets, so they are a better match to the size of the Frostgrave parts.
-
Oh yes! 8)
Those new barbarians have a nice Wildling vibe and make a refreshing change from the bulging biceps and furry loincloth look barbarian minis tend to have.
Thanks for posting, I will keep a look out for these.

Lovely work again Thomas.
If you dont mind me giving you a tip with the photos (some are a little orange), try downloading Photoscape. Its a good, free and easy to use photo editing software. Usually all you need to do to get the colour right is click on "auto level". I use it for all my photos.

Thanks Steam Flunky < I think that it is a problem with the light bulbs I am using I will change them into daylight bulbs sooner or later

A nice consistent feel to the whole collection

Great to see the small houses come to miniature life :)

Good stuff Tom :)

The purple and white is a very nice combination, Tom. Well done.
I do agree you need to do something about your camera though! Your pics are incredibly yellow lol
If I may, I have impudently taken your picture and just hit 'colour auto fix' using Microsoft Digital Image software - it basically fixes the white balance problems.
It now looks like this - which, I am sure, is much more how they look in the flesh (or in the plastic anyway) :)
A lamp with a daylight bulb, or a basic bit of photo editing software would solve the problem 8)

I wish it were that simple with my ^%%$^% camera!
These are looking good! Very much looking forward to seeing House Blackwood...
-
Great looking unit!
-
Really want to see a full force picture now, especially one that's been color adjusted like the lovely Brax unit.
-
Thanks Richard for correcting my picture ! Indeed they look more like on the corrected picture. I will see that I can fix that problem after Crisis this coming weekend.

When the Barbarian plastic box set from North Star came out a few weeks back I got myself a few boxes as I think they are a good start to do wildlings or free folk. First is a “unit” (is this a term fit for wildlings?) of 12 Bowmen or hunters . They will hunt for game as well as black watch.
Here is the chief of the unit
(https://wargamesgazette.files.wordpress.com/2016/12/fullsizerender3.jpg)
The chief of the unit. A Barbarian body and arms with a frostgrafe soldier head with horns from a barbarian head.
Here are pictures of the other miniatures in the unit I you want to know which components I used to build them look here: https://wargamesgazette.com/2016/12/06/the-start-of-a-got-wildling-army/

The wildlings in the films have all long sleeves . The barbarian arms have bare upper arms. Have a look here:
Would you sculpt long sleeves on the models? I mean they come from the cold !?
-
Looking great. Nice kitbashing, thanks for sharing.
I personally wouldn't bother sculpting the sleeves as I want mine to have that tough northerner 'I ain't afraid of no cold' look, but if you want to emulate the look of the films go for it.
-
Wow! Very inspiring!

After a quite long brake I am back at my Game of Thrones project. I started painting the above miniatures and build some new. Sometimes I like building the miniatures more then painting them therefor here are some new ones:
The Lord of Bones, also mocked as “Rattleshirt” by the brothers of the Night’s Watch, is a wildling leader of renown. He is called Rattleshirt due to his armor, which is made up of loosely-tied bones that clatter as he moves. He wears a broken giant’s skull as his helm.(Wiki of Ice and Fire). This is my take of him:
and his unit for Dragon Rampant:

Very nice! Strangely, I am doing the very same thing! I just got my first Barbarian models Sunday (thank you Annie!) and after fondling all the sprues I noticed the bare arms. I have the same dilemma- to sculpt sleeves or not. Since scuplting 60+ sets of sleeves will take a lot of extra time, I decided to take a two-prong approach. Some will have the bog-standard Barbarian arms, and others will have whatever arms I can spare from the Soldiers/Cultist boxes. I already plan to use the Cultist hooded heads on many of the figs. I will let the paint scheme cover up any discrepancies. I figure the off-white winter wear and snow bases will distract the eye away from the bare arms!
-
I did the same and mixed up the arms from different boxes works quite well. I will depict them without snow on the bases I think as I already have my Starks with snow bases.
-
Very nice Tom.
Like you, I am rather more addicted to building them than to the hard work of painting them lol

Same here. The painting is a little bit more forced at times.
-
Indeed it is, but anyway here is the first painted archer: Excuse the not so great picture as my eyesight is a bit bad at the moment. Hope they are not to bad
The figure is kit bashed with a body and head from the Frostgrave Barbarian set, Arms from the Frostgrave warriors set, and arrows from a Perry war of the roses set.

This is probably, quite a bit, late, but why would you really need to do much sculpting. Paint the arms as if it's leather or cloth down to the bracers...
-
The bow arms from the barbarian set are somuch better than the bow arms from the other set. He looks great Tom 8)
-
This may seem like a petty comment but I would not, for book authenticity, arm my wildlings with that much iron. Spears, bows, an occasional pot helmet and the odd sword at the most.
-
Thanks Richard!
I know that they have more stone age arms in the books and I will paint some of the blades to represent lesser metals like copper or bronze to reflect that the weapons are inferior to the rest .
-
Looks good.

Rattleshirt is great, but I love this guy – he's got a superb 'veteran hunter' feel too him; the hunched, stalking pose is a great match for those arms.
-
Thanks Smith! Here is the next one painted:

Looking good! ;D. I see I will have to get me some barbarians...
I'm finding there are some very nice looking heads in the conquest miniatures medieval archers. They are proving not to be as gruesome as I first thought they might be.

Yes, the heads are very good.
It's the shooting poses that are gruesome...
-
as the captain says .
-
I'm finding with care you can get some pretty good crouching and reloading, 'just loosed', or 'just about to' poses - all of which is good for more skirmishy types, much like these barbarians, but I agree there is not a classic longbow braced stance... I shall be adding the usual greenstuff fur and cowls to make some Northern bannermen/Night's watch, while the extra self bow arms I can add to suitably shaggified Celtic and Dark Ages warriors to make my wildlings...

Very nice Tom. I've been painting some of these Frostgrave barbarians, and they really are excellent figures - almost too finely detailed in fact. It's taking me blooming ages to paint them! But I think they're some of the best plastic figures I've worked on so far (besides the Perrys, of course :D)
Kudos to North Star and Osprey for switching sculptors. The original Frostgrave soldiers and cultists weren't bad, but these are a quantum leap ahead in quality. I wish Fireforge and Gripping Beast would follow suit with their plastic sets.
-
You are so right Richard . I love theses miniatures. I got myself a metal frost grave giant to scratch him into WunWun.
The metals are quite nice too.
