I've been working on this Command Base for King Harold in the background whilst painting up Huscarls for the demo.
You can see more pics and read all about it on my Just Add Water Blog here:

Hello,
Superb work !! :-*

Thanks guys- all the positive comments are very much appreciated :)
If I can find the time today or tomorrow I'll take some close ups of the actual mini's and post them up here too.
Darrell.

Excellent! :-* :-*
Really like the way you paint you're shields.

Really like the way you paint you're shields.
Thanks Cram 8)
The shields are (to be honest) quite swift to paint as they are done in the style that I find the easiest to paint up reasonably quickly. The Godwinson shield is bone in an earlier more 'complete' manner.

Really like the way you paint you're shields.
Thanks Cram- what you see is actually my 'quick' method- i've got an awful lot of shields to paint up! :)
I took some close ups this morning- some of them are at a 'funny' angle but I was using the macro and it was hard to get in to some of the nooks and crannies of the vignette!

A few months ago I was asked by Gripping Beast to take some larger file pictures of a vignette I put together of Harold Godwinson surveying the Norman army just prior to Hastings.
It has taken me a little bit of time. Put it all down to being a scatterbrain. Finally today, I remembered and took the pictures.
The files are large, all approximately 3000 pxl wide so you will be able to click on the images and really get into the meat of the pictures, blemishes and all.
Rather then start a new thread with the new pictures I just thought I'd pop them here.
If you want to view the full sized files they can be clicked on on my blog here:
https://justaddwater-bedford.blogspot.com/2020/09/harold-godwinson-vignette-large-files.html (https://justaddwater-bedford.blogspot.com/2020/09/harold-godwinson-vignette-large-files.html)
Or- Right click on the images in this post, Open Image in New Tab and view :)

I don't think so, there's a set taken at a different angle so maybe that's it?

Thanks.

I counted 11 different pics - I think the first 3 or 4 are repeated, then the close-ups!

I counted 11 different pics - I think the first 3 or 4 are repeated, then the close-ups!
God knows why but I have just checked them by measuring from the base to the foot of Godwinson's shield and none of the images are repeats.
They are all taken from different angles; there might be some subtle variations but I assure you that all the images (at least on my screen) are separate pictures. :D
-
Don’t forget that the website auto resizes massive pictures so by the time they are reduced any subtle differences will be lost
Edit: by way of example images 2 and 6 are essentially the same thing
-
Nice one. I think the color of the mail is spot-on. Dark-greyish with a hint of what I call a mixed "rust/purplish teint", just like you see it with re-enactors. Not the fake shiny silvery effect, that's not how it would have looked.

Thanks SI. I'll take the downsizing dynamic into account next time I post a number of pictures from different angles. To be honest, it hadn't even crossed my mind that the angle effectively reduced in such a manner. :)

Cheers Duncan, that good of you to say. 8)
I agree re: painting mail. It can sometimes look garish if overdone. I have always toned it down mail, usually after highlighting up first then applied a couple of very thin dark glazes. Glad you noticed :)
(not inclusive of my first Hinchliffe Naps a a boy which were given a very generous coat of Humbrol Gloss lol )

Over the past year, every now and again I've been rebasing my Anglo Danes. They have been in a seemingly perpetual state of having no bases, no filler, no texture, paint nor tufts. After a day of being knee deep in my studio on one of my famous tidying up jobs (yeah, it's worse then ever!) I had to stop and do something wargames related, though technically that's what my studio is!
So, here they are rebased! I remember when I removed the last bases they took a bit of punishment as I has superglued them to the bases, a mistake that I will never make again! It was noticeable that there was the odd chip that needed touching up so please, if you find any in the images please don't point them out to me!
The idea is to rebase them for the rules that the guys are playing at the club (WAB, To the Strongest) and for rules that I plan to introduce to the club (Swordpoint and Dux Bellorum).
There are more pictures on my blog plus a list of manufacturers etc here:

Hello,
Superb !!! As usual !!!
Nikkobourges
-
Truly captivating :-*
-
Lovely looking unit! :-*
-
Thanks guys :)
Another two mini's to finish then that's Unit 2 completed. Then a couple of Command Bases and Sheildwall Markers.
Once painted I've got to go through the zen like ritual of glossing them, leaving a week for the gloss to fully settle before matting down o_o
-
Very nice. Love the wood on your weapons.
-
Bit good them.🤙
-
Cheers guys :)
Very nice. Love the wood on your weapons.
There's a right old mix of old and newly hewn woods i that unit. Same with the next one that is on it's way very soon.
-
They look great! Rebasing a finished unit? An action I can't fathom ever doing. lol
Maybe a new movement tray with filler but never a new base. Takes me way too long to get them finished in the first place.
-

Believe me it is not my favourite pass time! Especially when I actually superglued the mini's to the bases! >:(
Maybe a new movement tray with filler but never a new base. Takes me way too long to get them finished in the first place.
They were on much larger bases prior to this and the basing system didn't at all match any of the rules I plan on using so I had no choice. I'm not normally fussed about a few cm here and there and as I'm only basing two units of Anglo Danes, the rest are to be painted , it's not that much of a sacrifice lol
It does drive one potty but hey, they're rebased now with complete with extra newly painted miniatures :)
-
The second unit is now complete and apart from some rough work trying to prise the miniature from their previously superglued bases I did get to paint up four or five extra mini's so not all was so stressful!
There are a load of other images from different angles etc of the unit on my blog as well as links that hint at what is to come

Splendid work there.

Basing is definitely my least favorite task. But as your pictures attest, they units look really good in their new form. Nice work.
-
Thanks for the goodly words guys :)
Basing is definitely my least favorite task.
It's not basing per se, it's rebasing that is soul destroying- especially if you used superglue :'( Needless to say that this will never happen again! :)
But as your pictures attest, they units look really good in their new form. Nice work.
Thanks, there's another unit on it's way now. :)

Super work, Darrell.

Very dynamic. Well done Darrell.

Thanks guys- appreciated. There's more on the painting desk just now :)

They look fabulous mate

I did Gate Fulford many years ago, as York used to be my home town, it tends to be one of the overlooked battles of 1066. Good look with your project.

It's a great battle to do. We (SESWC) did a version of it many years ago with a mate and the help of Gripping Beast's massive collection at Claymore many moons ago......
A couple of pics.....

I've been messing around trying to create convincing markers for my Anglo Danes for when they go into Shieldwall........
I think I've finally nailed the correct size for the bases to number of mini's(?). I didn't want the markers to overwhelm the units. I hope I've hit the right spot?
Many more pics and high brow reasoning on my blog:

The new marker certainly looks better. :-*
-
Nice work Atheling.
Holy c*** that Battle of Fulford looks impressive.
-
Beautiful and really like your new shieldwall marker! Looks fantastic!
-
The new marker looks excellent! The only concern I would have, wouldn’t it be in the way during close combat?
-
Thanks for all the positive input guys- it helps, really does :)
Nice work Atheling.
Holy c*** that Battle of Fulford looks impressive.
Cheers Ragnar, we won best display game of the show which was great. The game was put on for The Lance and Longbow Society using mini's from the positively huge Gripping beast collection. My thanks, to this day go out to Gripping Beast for hauling all the extra miniatures up from Evesham to Edinburgh! 8)
I'm going to do a Fulford Redux using my own collection and terrain as soon as is possible. I'm considering doing Stamford Bridge and possibly Hastings too. Stamford might be a pain as it would involve painting a lot of Norse sans armours. Hastings is a little bit of a boring battle but you never know. I've already got enough Normans to do quite a large game.
The new marker looks excellent! The only concern I would have, wouldn’t it be in the way during close combat?
I can just move the marker to one side if that were to be the case. As long as it's near enough to the unit then it ought to be reasonably obvious. I hope o_o
-
Should be fine. I for sure wouldn’t mind.
-
Should be fine. I for sure wouldn’t mind.
I'm hoping overall effect, with a marker to the fore of all the units, will be quite effective but I'm a while away from that at present :)
-
That is a great idea.
I have begun to do something similar for commanders. In stead of having them on round bases I have begun to put them on half rounds to attach them to the rear of units. So they don't get in the way of combat.

That sounds like a very interesting idea! I wish that i had thought of it as I'm not very tempted to do the same. I don't think I could take the stress of rebasing though.
Have you got any snaps of the half =bases next to the units perchance?

You know you will... lol
-
You know you will... lol
lol I will be tempted. But after all the rebasing some of these fellows have been though, I positively refuse to rebase them veer again. touching up the parts of the models that were damaged was soul destroying. At the same time it was a wonderful excuse to paint up more 8)
-
The last week was a its and bobs sort of week on the painting table. I finished a few pieces that were destined to hover around in perpetuity..........
Still, it's always nice to document little victories no matter how small :)

The third unit on what will be a seven or eight unit army (with plenty of room for more as well as Norse Allies!). Then there's an entire Norse army to paint up to match too! o_o
It's been great fun mixing and matching the miniatures in the units, most of which contain about four or five different manufacturers.

Lovely stuff. I have done the same half base for my Winter King Hero’s and Leaders...think it was the gents at L.O.A. That offered that up many years back for their Napoleonic Wars figures if memory serves. Excellent paint jobs and wonderfully based sir! Keep them coming!
-
Those are lovely. The colours bring the figures together beautifully, and give the feel of a unit made up of individuals. Really great.
-
Lovely mate, the army is coming along nicely.
What did you use for the stakes
Cheers
Matt

Probably the finest collection of Dark Ages miniatures I have seen :-*

Will do! I'm trying to to concentrate too mush on the "end game" as that is often where, at least in my personal experience, low morale creep can begin to manifest lol
Those are lovely. The colours bring the figures together beautifully, and give the feel of a unit made up of individuals. Really great.
Thank you for the goodly words Ingarsby. There is a right old mix of miniatures and manufacturers in there so it's nice to see that you have noticed the individual make up on the units- makes it worth it as that is the effect I was looking for.
-
Lovely mate, the army is coming along nicely.
What did you use for the stakes?
The terrain is all Grand Manner, mostly bought about 20 years ago and only given a brush up last year!
Probably the finest collection of Dark Ages miniatures I have seen :-*
Thanks Gareth mate!! your kind words are very much appreciated :)
I'm lucky in I've been collecting 'Dark Ages' miniatures for a very long time so I have a lot to choose from which has helped give the army the right sort of 'flavour'.

Quick update just to mention that I've done a step by step Shield painting guide for those who are interested on my blog.
They're all Early Medieval shields and it's the same technique I've used on all my hand painted Anglo Danes:
More on my Blog here:

Quick pic, plenty more with detailed step by steps plus a few other ideas.

Nice writeup.

Nice writeup.
Thanks Syrinx. Hopefully it will be useful to some folks. It's pretty basic but I wanted to keep it that way so as not to overcomplicate things.
I'm considering doing a heraldic version as I don't paint my heraldry in the traditional way of "fat over lean" and it might be of some interest. That will have to wait until I get around to getting back into my Late Medieval/Early Renaissance stuff as I'm sticking to my "rule of threes" project wise :)

I just had to buy these Footsore Miniatures Matthew Bickley Anglo Danish sculpts just as soon as they were available. The sculpts are just so dynamic and full of life; they have the actual appearing as of in the maelstrom of melee. Matthew has the are ability of capturing movement/acts of violence like no other historical sculptor that I can think of, with the obvious exception the Perry's. He is right up there in my humble opinion.
They took a bit of time to make their way to the front of the painting queue as I have a "Rule of Three" which has served me well since I got back into the hobby in November 2019. If you are wondering just what on earth I mean by the "Rule of Three" it is quite elementary. In the past and for many a year, my wargaming projects were forever being superseded due to the ever present Wargamers Butterfly Syndrome, in extremis! I would start one project only to skip to another on a whim. On return from my near five year hiatus away from then hobby I realised that things had to change! If I was to get close to completing any given project then my methodology had to be adjusted. Thus the "Rule of Three" was born. The concept is simple. Do not prep more then three separate projects in one go and do not under any circumstances allow the prepped miniatures to encroach on more space than the space I have available one shelf. This has worked for me very well over the last year and I am definitely sticking to it. It has (of course) not prevented me from straying but if I do get distracted, I carefully put one of the projects out of sight place it in a file box, each mini wrapped in bubble wrap if they have been primed and/or undercoated. This way I have an actual clear visual (my one shelf) indication of just what I need to focus on. Oh, it has also saved me a lot of money!
OK, enough digression.
While I have been waiting for this years Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge to start I was feverishly beavering away at my fourth unit of Anglo Danes to add to my Swordpoint army. I floundered a little (real life) and did not manage to get more than sixteen miniatures completed leaving me with the very back ranks still to do. In case you have been counting, yeah, there are only eight presented here; the next batch of eight have been glossed and are patiently awaiting the matting down process.
Enough of my rambling.....

Superb painting Darren,
Thanks Stuart- very kind of you to say so.
Totally agree of your rule of three, makes such a difference and things more manageable but never reached this quality even when disciplined.
I'm still a little amazed at my new found discipline but as time has gone on over the past year and the results have become more concrete, it has been easier to stick to it. :)
Here are a few approximate 'life' sized pics of the mini's..... (they would not upload so I'll hyperlink them). Some are a bit large but I hope you get an idea ???

Cheers Richard, more to be released in the early new year. Which leaves me with a minor dilemma.....Do I wait until the new releases are bought and painted before coming up with a final composition ??? ???

Another set of eight Anglo Danish Huscarls and Fyrd complete for the fourth unit. Three more units to and 12 bases of skirmishers to go but they will be on hold for a while as I am going to be digging back into my Early Byzantines. It has been roughly eight days since they received a coat of gloss varnish and a couple since the first matt varnish layer was added. As is so easily done when spraying a matt varnish over that of a gloss it is easy to miss bits (which of course I did!) so had to wait another day to apply another coat. After a week of waiting to get them finished an extra day is a trifle really.
There is a good mix of miniatures ranging from (very) OOP Gripping Beast Patten brothers), more contemporary Gripping Beast Colin Patten and Soapy), Footsore Miniatures (Bill), Saxon Miniatures (Colin Patten) and finally Drabant. If any of the miniatures prior to painting seem like they are just not going to fit it was the Drabant miniatures. They have much larger proportions then the rest. I think the painting process provides some sort of homogeneity which binds the miniatures into a whole creating e believable unit.
If you scroll to the bottom of the page you will see a couple of images that show how the miniatures fit together on the 40mm x 40mm bases. I chose to go with the smaller size bases as opposed to my normal 40mm frontage and 50-60mm depth as I was looking to create that hunched together in a Shieldwall look. not unlike some of the sections of the Bayeux Tapestry.

I used to use superglue for this job but have been a grateful convert to being more patient and using PVA so I can better adjust any miniatures which look out of kilter with the rest of the unit.

Excellent work, I particularly like the shields! I own some figures very similar to those I can see among yours who have very shallow hands for gripping spears, and I am always paranoid that the spears will break off. What brand of glue are you using?

Cheers Gibby. :)
I'm using Ever Build, High Viscosity Superglue. Carefully. Not too much but not just a dab if that makes sense? I'm about to try out Gorilla Glue Heavy Duty Weld Epoxy on one spear and see how that compared with the superglue. If there's no appreciable difference I'll just carry on using the cheaper superglue.
Oh, I should add, I usually file a little more into the 'grip' of the hand with a fine needle file for insurance.
EDIT: I really should have pointed this out in this post earlier, I think brain fog might be the reason...... most of the Footsore Miniatures have drill through hands which really makes a difference with the strength of the bond between spear and model.

Very nice!
Thanks Tonhel :)
I love the Matthew Bickley sculpts!
They're quite something aren't they? They are certainly very distinctive. Definitely some of the most dynamic miniatures I've had the pleasure to paint. Some of the stuff he did for the Foundry Normans will be making an appearance at some point. They're all cleaned up, spears glued etc and just need an undercoat. Following a conversation with a good mate a couple of weeks ago I'll heading back over to the Early Byzantines for a good while. So it will be chiming in with the odd Anglo Danish unit which I intend to have finished, bit by bit, by the end of the Summer. :)
-
Darrell,
These are really superb. Brilliant work. I too really like the Matthew Bickley sculpts. I've got a set of the Anglo Saxons he did for Foundry sitting around unpainted and I really must get them painted soon. They're really nice figures too.

Thanks Paul. Praise indeed when I think of your TYW collections that has had me gawping in envy for many a year!

There really is something great about the Matthew Bickley sculpts. It's not just the dynamism, they paint up really well, but I found that there was a lot of hidden detail suck as the lining on the inside of the mail which was a delight to discover and paint! The extra detail on the helms, swords, leather belts/straps. It was obvious that Matthew has spent a lot of time studiously looking at the sources.
Footsore are releasing more very soon and I will be buying more Foundry sculpts too! It would be rude not to :)

really nice indeed

Cheers guys- all comments appreciated :)
I should have the unit based up by the end of today- fingers crossed- it's a pain carefully putting filler in the gaps of a base that is 40mm x 40mm with four (mostly modern) 28's on the base lol
Time for a break and onto another project for a while I think :)

Looking good!

Lovely job. Like the falling arrows.

Thanks to everyone for their kind words, the unit is now based and just needs photographing.
Your back rankers are better than my front rankers!
I dunno..... you have been a solid inspiration rules wise, brush wise and game wise for (at least) two solid decades so you can take some of the credit yourself James :)
Lovely job. Like the falling arrows.
Cheers mate. They should look good when they are all arrayed. i really need to get it together and "tidy" my studio and get the table set up for some group shots.
-
I should have the unit based up by the end of today- fingers crossed- it's a pain carefully putting filler in the gaps of a base that is 40mm x 40mm with four (mostly modern) 28's on the base lol
I feel your pain. Even with disciplined rank and file napoleonics that can be a headache, let alone with those nice dynamic poses. Nice work as always on painting the rear guys. Looking forward to the finished unit!
-
Really nice, Darrell. Out of interest, do you happen to know where the bald spearman with his shield above his head (rhs of top photo) came from? I don't think I've ever seen him before.
-

Me too! lol I should be able to get some snaps in later today or tomorrow.

He's from one of the Drabant Miniatures packs sold by Old Glory (pic below Paul). The DRabant shields are very large so I replaced it with an old one (Crusader Miniatures?) and repositioned the shield to (hopefully) more dynamic position.
Andy handed me a handful of them at a show a while back. They're quite tall and more bulky then most 28's but can be sneaked into units and really do look the part. As you spotted I've used all sorts of different manufacturers for the Anglo Danes.
-
Many thanks, Darrell. He's a really nice figure.
-
Many thanks, Darrell. He's a really nice figure.
No probs Paul. Drabant do have some really nice miniatures. They are very stylistically distinct and at first glance I thought of just using them as a 'shieldwall' marker. It's quite remarkable how painting can bring some homogeneity to a hodgepodge of different manufacturers. At least I hope that's how they come across! ??? :)
-
Drabant look to have quite a few figures with their shields high - presumably blocking arrows, javelins or blows from long-handled axes. I must say I really like the pose.
On the subject of mixing manufacturers, as you know, I do it as well. I suspect the thing to do is mix completely - if you just include one figure by a different manufacturer he'll stick out but if you mix up figures from several manufacturers it'll look fine. For what it's worth, I think you've done an excellent job with the unit - it looks really excellent.

Yeah, I think you are right. Having said that I discovered this quite by accident just by trying to include an many different poses as possible to avoid the units looking too homogenous. I'm pleased that you think that it's working :)

It has been slow progress of late on the painting table. I wont dwell on this. I just needed to say it "out loud" for the sake of my own sanity. Back to the toys.
The fourth unit of Anglo Danes have now happily been completed. That is four out of the projected six and one unit of Norse as allies. I have another five Shieldwall Markers, four 40mm x 40mm Command and 12 bases of Skirmisher types to complete. I'm going be kind to myself and say that I'm just shy of being half way through the army. :>)

In order to keep things fresh on the painting table and with a view to hopefully putting on a game later this year at a show [fingers tightly crossed] I have decided to switch back over to my Early Byzantines for a while. Since returning to the hobby last November and having found a new "discipline" to my painting regime I feel confident that both projects will be completed by October this year, in so far as any wargames project is ever completed! I have been in communication with Keith from Aventine Miniatures who has provided me with clues as to what is planned for release with their spectacular Early Byzantine Range. If you are interested in the Eastern Romans/Early Byzantines you really must take a look at this very high quality range.

Back to the Anglo Danes.....
As mentioned earlier it has been slow going of late but the unit if finally varnished and based. This particular unit is my favourite out of all the Anglo Danish units I have painted thus far (all four lol). The mini taking the arrow in the chest along with the mini catching an arrow in his shield have set off the unit nicely without having what is arguably too dominant a feature such as some of my earlier casualties on the stands which took up most of the space on a base.

I've had to spend a lot of time going over these just to check out all the little details. I particularly liked the dropped spear on the poor chap in the rear having an 'arrowing experience. I look forward to seeing the group shots of the completed army.

Me too! Four units done eight to go not including 12 skirmisher bases, more command bases and Shieldwall markers! so, not even half way though :-X lol

I will keep regularly coming back to the army Paul. It's been slow progress of late but also a labour of love so they will not be shelved!
-
Definitely looks like a labor of love! The variety of figures really helps makes it come alive. Another great unit.

Marvelous work A, really impressive. The units really look as though they're at it. You're, slowly yet surely, building a collection any wargamer would be privileged to own.

Stunning, don’t compromise quality over quantity you ain’t Stalin mate

Excellent in every way. I do like the way you have mixed the manufacturers, which shows how it can be done.

Cheers Roo :) and yeah, I'm not Stalin lol
Excellent in every way. I do like the way you have mixed the manufacturers, which shows how it can be done.
Thanks. When I started putting the different manufacturers together they were all of similar sizes and often styles too. Like the Gripping Beast and Saxon Miniatures. I think, probably unconsciously I became a little bolder as time went on; certainly there is a wider range of mini's in terms of size, bulk and sculpting styles on the latter units. Again, just picking what I thought would work. The odd thing is, this is not by any means my normal approach to putting together a unit. I usually go for mini's that are of a very similar size and style.
I'm going to put together a Norse army after the Anglo Danes have had their due and will probably take a similar approach. God knows I've got enough unpainted Norse by various manufacturers to make it happen!!! :)
BTW, if anyone has any ideas on manufacturers I have missed it would be good to hear further suggestions.

Have you seen his 'speed painted' stuff? Still very impressive. :D

I do have a confession re: the 'speed painted' stuff. The Perry Miniatures Mahdists and Afghans do lend themselves to speed painting. It would be much more difficult for me to speed paint a unit of mixed miniatures like those of the above. I don't think I would be inclined to hurry them either :)
-
Beautiful painting and stunning vignettes each one. Very inspirational. I agree that the Aventine Early Byzantine range is superb. They are a long way off the work bench at the moment but I'm certainly looking forward to seeing what Keith does with the cavalry.

I'm really happy to read that you think so. The vignette style basing has been a theme that I have tried to continue in all my armies. I have to thank Mr James Morris for turning me onto the idea after seeing his Dark Age armies in Age of Arthur, Shieldwall and El Cid, as well as seeing much more of his work over the years at various events.

Just a quick post to say that I've had quite a few of my pictures of my Anglo Danes features in the latest edition of The Wargames Annual.
They look absolutely stunning in print and leaving me quite proud.

Lovely figures Atheling.
I'm curious if you have purchased any of the Victrix Anglo-Dane plastic figures and if so how do they fit in (size-wise) with the other ranges you have purchased.
From the pictures I have seen online I like the Victrix armoured Anglo-Danes but I'm not fan of their unarmoured figures. The sculptor seems to struggle with sculpting natural looking folds in the clothing. I want to paint some Anglo-Danes for Saga with a mix of Victrix for hearthguards and another range for warriors (I'm thinking Footsore or Gripping Beast but not sure how the compare size-wise). Thanks.

I haven't. I haven't for any plastics at all in any of the units. I bought most of my Anglo Danes over a decade ago and Anglo Danish/Anglo Saxon plastic just didn't exist at the time. i have heard a few people mention that they have struggled to rank the Victrix mini's up in a Shieldwall type formation but I have to caveat that statement with the fact that I haven't tried it and it may not be the case.

Victrix would be fine for Saga as it doesn't matter how they rank up.
I have a mixture of Gripping Beast (Patton Sculpts), some very old OOP Gripping Beast stuff Darren cast up for me as a special request about 15 years ago, Saxon Miniatures (now sold by Warlord), Wargames Foundry, Footsore (Bill Thornhill sculpts), Footsore (Matthew Bickley sculpts), Dradant Miniatures and others. This is an unusual practice for me as I usually stick to one manufacturer!
Hope that is of some help?

You certainly should be proud. Stunning painting! :-*

Many thanks Tonhel.
I'm already thinking of making a up a small-ish area of desert type terrain to get some shots of the Early Byzantines as I think the scenery in the background of the Anglo Danish pictures really made all the difference.

I cannot get near my painting table at the moment and consequently I find myself with some downtime. I want to keep the momentum going on all my projects ergo this post featuring all the units painted thus far for my Anglo Danes.
If you hop on over to my Just Add Water blog there's a host of pictures from all sorts of angles of all the units, casualty markers and the one single Shieldwall marker i have managed thus far:

There's a bit of chat about what my plans are for the army, to enter my first Swordpoint event and plans for a redux of the Fulford Gate display game. If you're interested do jump over to my blog at the link above.

outstanding!!! :-*

Thank you guys. I'll be working on Huscarl/Fyrd unit five as soon as I can get near my paints again!

Big fan of your work!
Could you be so kind and explain your varnishing regiment to us. Please do go into detail. That subject is a constant hassle and I would love to get your perspective on it.

Big fan of your work!
Thank you Batu :)
Could you be so kind and explain your varnishing regiment to us. Please do go into detail. That subject is a constant hassle and I would love to get your perspective on it.
Certainly, no problem. This is basically an article on varnishing that is cut and pasted from my blog:
Varnishing Dark Age Period Miniatures- Gloss and Matt- My Way.
Although this has been titles "Varnishing Dark Age Period Miniatures" the same methods would be suitable for any period really. This is a simply a brief run through of how I personally prefer to varnish my miniatures. I realise that everyone will rightly have their own way of doing things, not only that, different individuals will get different results from using the exactly the same processes!
This is simply the way in which I go about it and hopefully some of the information be useful for some of you? If not, then maybe of interest? I am a bit of a geek when it comes to painting; it is not unknown for me to have had conversations lasting several hours in person or even over the phone discussing painting! And yes, I do need to get out more, which unfortunately for me, is not really possible at the mo'.
Before I go any further, I really ought to add, before spraying any varnish (or undercoat) on any miniatures I find that heating up the tin by placing it on a thick towel on top of a radiator for 20 minutes is very helpful. I also shake for 5 minutes, which is well in excess the one or two minutes recommended by most manufacturers. The point is somewhat obvious, you want the spray to be as well mixed as is possible. If you live in a cold climate or have cold winters, try setting up a spray booth in your house, conservatory or garage. A decent cardboard box and a couple of light sources are all you need. Just make sure the ventilation is good and that any children are out of harms way. A good solid respirator is also very useful and will save your lungs from any damage. Make sure it has a good solid filtration system. Cheap is a bad idea.
Glossing:
So, the first thing I do is to get a medium bristle synthetic brush and give the miniatures a good dusting off . A brush not so soft as to leave dust in the recesses of the miniature but not so hard that it will take any of your paintwork off (this is something I do prior each painting session too). It's amazing how much dust can gather, even overnight and this can ruin the varnishing process even before you begin.
I use one of two options for glossing. My number one choice is brush on Humbrol DIY Enamel Gloss varnish from a tin. This is super strong stuff when it has gone off. I bought several tins in bulk many years ago and still have a few left. Apply with an old synthetic brush and a small amount of thinners/white spirit making certain that you do not allow the varnish to pool or 'bubble'. Be sure to use an old reasonably stiff brush which can be cleaned with thinners/white spirit after the job is done. Oh, if you ever plan on using the brush again, clean it in white spirit after applying the varnish!
My second option for Gloss is to use Humbrol Enamel Gloss spray. This comes small in 150ml cans and it is just as more or less good as the brush on, certainly a lot more convenient but one has to be very careful not to let the varnish pool. If you do get any pooling I have found that a lint free cloth can be carefully used to 'pull' and excess away. I mush prefer the brush on Humbrol DIY Enamel Gloss varnish as it is much easier to control how much varnish is on the miniature/s and to avoid pooling.
Note: Humbrol have stopped producing their DIY Gloss Enamel. I have not tried their gloss from their usual range of enamel's but I expect it will be very similar(?). It's an open question; if anyone has any experience?

The Glossed Miniatures:

Then, wait about a week! Seriously! Let the gloss go fully off prior to applying the matt varnish. This is actually something I learned recently from the maestro painter Redzedz. A few moths ago, I started to notice some spotting/icing appearing on some models, made enquiries on the net and discovered that although the gloss may seem to be dry, it in fact had not in fact fully gone off. A period of about a week is best to play it safe.
Matting Down:
For my matt layers I use Windsor and Newton Professional Matt Varnish. I used to use the old recipe of Testors Dullcote lacquer (in the black cans) but I have found that the newer version (in the white cans) nearly always leaves a satin sheen so stopped using it immediately and gave the cans away. There is nothing wrong with using Testors if that is the sort of finish you are looking for. It is just not for me. It is important to apply the Windsor and Newton Professional Matt Varnish in light layers with small bursts from the can so's to build up the matt gently.
As the matt varnish does not magically turn matt the moment it lands on the model I usually find that I have missed a spot or two on the models. If you look closely at some of the miniatures in the images below you will notice that there are spots on the miniatures where there is some gloss showing through. Though typically, on the miniatures I matted down for this little article there is not a lot! I usually find that I have missed more! I always add an extra layer of matt, so two sprays a day or two apart. I always give the matt about 24 hours between sprays to let it go off.
Matting Down:

So, just to recap. You are essentially going from the very shiny miniature on the right to the matted down version after just one spray of the Windsor and Newton Artists Professional Matt varnish.

Hope that helps?

Thanks! Is there are a reason why you use enamel gloss varnish and not acrylic gloss varnish?
-
Thanks! Is there are a reason why you use enamel gloss varnish and not acrylic gloss varnish?
Yeah, Enamel Gloss is a heck of a lot harder than any acrylic gloss. It protects the paint jobs where acrylic really does very little, if anything, as it is more brittle.

Interesting. This guys goes all in on testing varnish: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hRYhns1h3Q&ab_channel=GoobertownHobbies

fantastic article (and results!).
similar to Dallimore in one of the Foundry books.
I've long been using the W&N spray, but have a feeling that the old Humbrol gloss enamel you're using is a key ingredient, perhaps not currently available.
I've tried various gloss varnishes prior to matt, and never get the velvety finish you do. Although maybe I don't leave the various coats enough time to dry either.

I've seen it before Batu. Basically I'm set in my ways ang just go with what I know works :)

Thanks. I think Kev was a big fan of Blackfriars varnish after letting it settle down for matting down but the principles are the same really.

Yeah, my heart sank a little when I noticed that they were not producing it anymore. I've got a couple of cans left, but could always switch over the Humbrol Gloss Enamel Spray is pressed to do so. As Redzed pointed out to me a while back, the real key is to leave the gloss to go off for at least a week.

I give it roughly 24 hours between coats of Winsor and Newton Matt Pro- then the week mentioned above between the gloss and the first coats of matt.
Do post up any results you yourself get Bloggard :)

Darrell, this thread is great! So much amazing brushwork!! :o
Basically I'm set in my ways and just go with what I know works :)
Amen to that. I can echo that sentiment as an old painty curmudgen. lol
-
thanks Atheling - does look as tho' it's the drying time which is key then, and I've never been very good on that score.
I actually should be painting some figs in time for a chum coming end of April - so hopefully so.
-
These are still superb. You’re getting some amazing definition into the paintwork there. Great to see all those different manufacturers in together. For me, this makes it completely your own.

Yeah, the drying time is primarily the key- even when I've used Hunbrol Enamel Gloss spray i've left it a week.

It's probably worth mentioning watch the humidity too.

Thanks James. The general idea from many a moon ago was to have as many different miniatures in each unit as possible, as much variation as was possible I managed to persuade Darren and Stu to dig out the old (milliput sculpted) Anglo Saxon moulds at one of the last hot Lead/Cold Steel events at Gripping Beast Towers and bang some out for me. Happily they agreed. Some of the old Gripping Beast mini's are a little shabby and really show their age but quite miraculously, some of the moulds have weathered the slings and arrows of being cast again and again and the miniatures are reasonably crisp given the age of the moulds.
I've got a good mix of Footsore (old Bill Thornhill and Matthew Bickley), Gripping Beast (old Colin Patton and newer Colin Patten plus some of Soapy's), Drabant (bought a while ago from Old Glory UK!), Wargames Foundry (old range and new range), Saxon Miniatures (Mr Colin Patton strikes again!- now sold by Warlord), Perry Miniatures, Artizan Designs etc.
I think I actually surprised myself in how well the composition of each unit came together. To get all the disparate mini manufacturers to fit together. At the risk of blowing my own trumpet (and I hope I'm not coming across as a braggard here?) I think they have come together very well and the units still have that Bayeux Tapestry feel.

Blow your trumpet loud.
Your work continues to be stunning, the attention to detail, managing, sourcing and grouping the various ranges, from so many suppliers.
Superb results, cannot be praised enough.

Absolutely brilliant! Masterful brushwork! Fantastic looking units!

Some how, somewhere I have managed to find the strength to start getting back into my painting. As I have mentioned before I am battling real demons in terms of mental health and it is no exaggeration that it took a heck of a lot of effort and determination to pick up the brushes again!
This post is both a small celebration and a reminder that it can be done. Are the miniatures painted to the exact same standard as the last unit of Anglo Danes I managed to paint up? Probably not. I am still feeling a little tentative with my brush work to add borders to the tunics and shirts but that will come back with a little time. I have left these unvarnished for now as I'm hoping, as I get back my confidence with the brush I will be able to add patters to the borders with my usual skill.

It's great to see that you're back painting again! Don't bother too much painting borders and details, they look very good already and I feel it's more important for you to generate a little output at the moment rather than painting Golden Demon winning miniatures. Keep on with the good work!

Keep it simple on the first ones so that you can take your time to readapt by yourself and then go to the details.

I want to have the mini's matching the quality of the other units o_o

You should be very pleased with those - even if you think they aren’t quite up to a previous level, they are objectively still excellent. Leagues ahead of what I knock out.
I really like the more muted colours on the shields

Well done. Wherever or however you have managed it, they are still good work.
More important is you managed to do them. I for one am glad to see the quality of your work, even if you feel they are not your best, you will improve them further.
Keep finding your strength.
Always look forward to seeing your work, even if I don't always comment, you are one of the inspiring people on this forum, with your skill with your brush, your sharing of tips and techniques, knowledge of your subject matter and more.
Look forward as always to what you do next

I have to say, it was an uphill struggle. There are a number of factors "getting in the way" but not being able to actually go to the club (or event/show) and play a game for such a prolonged period is definitely one of the big ones. I love painting but painting alone, although a large part of the hobby for me, is not enough in itself to provide the impetus to keep the brushes going.
It's a real struggle at them moment.
Always look forward to seeing your work, even if I don't always comment, you are one of the inspiring people on this forum, with your skill with your brush, your sharing of tips and techniques, knowledge of your subject matter and more.
Thank you- that is really very much appreciated. I don't quite know what to say as there is such a large array of tip top talent on this forum alone.
Look forward as always to what you do next

My own depression can mean I have no impetus to paint despite loving it. What does help is to have a look at stuff I did in the past to realise I can still do it ;-) All power to you fella!

Have you tried remote gaming? I’ve quite enjoyed setting up a game, and having the players at the other end of Google Meet / Teams / Zoom call - giving their orders and rolling their dice.
I’m less enamoured with being a player on a remote game - but its better than nothing. I think hosting works better for me as I get to get my figures out on the table, and get the visual and tactile bit that is the whole point of gaming with figures. The players over Zoom adds the social aspect.
I definitely find that having a game or two immediately triggers me wanting to paint more stuff - just painting stuff on the expectation to use it a some indeterminate point in the future is much less motivating to me.

I haven't. I kept meaning to when the pandemic first descended upon us all but just kept throwing myself into my painting! o_o The irony is not lost on me o_o .
The problem now, as most are able to return to something very near their pre pandemic normal no one seems to be putting remote games on :-[

And more.....
Still not quite back in the rhythm of things with the brush but definitely an improvement on my output of late.

It took more time than I would have liked to complete this batch (the old Black Dog persisting) but here's the second rank of the Select Fyrd to go with fifth Anglo Danish unit.
This army has been a bit of a labour of love. It must be way over a year, perhaps two since I started to put the thing together! Anglo Danes are an army that I have always wanted to put together with the requisite attention they deserves. It took more time than I would have liked but here's the second rank of the Select Fyrd to go with fifth Anglo Danish unit- the first two ranks of Huscarls can be seen HERE and HERE
Anglo Danes are an army I have long wanted to put on the table going back to when I first faced off against John Glass's (RIP) Anglo Saxons in the heady days of Warhammer Ancient Battles at the Edinburgh club SESWC. Also many a game played at Warhammer World in the 1066 and All That Warhammer Ancient Battles campaign weekend, in particular Big Jim's Mercians, an army that gobbled up my Normans in short shrift! Great days that will always be remembered.
I have six more Select Fyrd mini's to finish n from the six miniatures here before I can start messing around with the composition of the unit. I have tried to make it so that my Anglo Danish units in particular look like they are fighting in a Shieldwall with a nod to some of much of the battle the imagery on the Bayeux Tapestry.
The keen eyed among you you will notice that there is a right old mix of manufacturers. Some very out of production Gripping Beast models going back to when Duncan and Colin were sculpting in Milliput, Gripping Beast models from the early 2000's, and more recent Soapy sculpts also from Gripping Beast. Added to these are Matthew Bickley and Bill Thornhill sculpts from Footsore Miniatures, Colin Patten sculpts from Saxon Miniatures (now sold by Warlord for £18 a pack I have been told!!). There is also a solid nod to Dave Andrews Anglo Danes as featured in the Warhammer Ancient Battles supplement, Shieldwall seen below.

Superb painting as always.

Thanks mate. It's been very slow going but I'm getting there :)
-
I have been following your various painting projects for some time now and I love your painting style and colour choices. It has even gotten me interested in studying colour theory in the future :D Great work as always and thanks for complementing my crusaders, means a lot.

I always relish looking at new posts from you mate 👍
-
More great stuff. It’s not just your painting, which is very well executed, but your attention to the composition of each base that stands out just as much. Well done.

Beware of colour theory as it get's rather complicated very quickly once you move beyond colour wheels. In fact, if I had any advice about color theory it would be to stick to the basics for miniature painting. Unless you're planning on entering a Golden Deamon thing..... :)

You're Crusades stuff is very worthy of praise mate! 8)

Thanks Alan. Composition is the idea when it comes to putting together units so I'm very pleased to hear you appreciate it. :)

And more.....
Still not quite back in the rhythm of things with the brush but definitely an improvement on my output of late.
The second rank of the 24 man unit of Huscarls ands Fyrd including the command figures.
More pictures from various angles can be seen on my blog here:

I seem to be taking myself by surprise presently; on a bit of a roll at the with the completion of the Italian Mounted Arquebusiers a few days ago and now a 24 man unit of Anglo Danes to add to my army.
I have just one more unit of Huscarls/Fyrd, a unit of Norse mercenaries and two twelve man units of skirmishers to do and the army will have got as far as I had plans for! I find myself in the unusual position of actually getting very close to finishing as project!
There are many more pictures of the unit from a variety of angles on my Just Add Water Blog here:

fantastic stuff, and really great unit, they come together really well, and the side shots really show off how you have captured the moment, with them seeming to push and shove together in the melee of battle - trying to get their spears at the enemy.

Thank you, that is music to my ears. Since the Perry's releasing their Agincourt to Orleans metal's I've really tried to make my units, where appropriate, to interact, to cooperate, to "talk" if you like(?)
and your painting as always is top notch
Thanks again Tactalvanic :)

Beautiful work (as always! ;)), and I'll bet there were a few hairy moments attaching the figures to the bases whilst trying to rank them up without scuffing the paintwork!

Thanks.

A little, but not as much as one might might think. I use Humbrol DIY Enamel Gloss varnish (sadly no longer available) on each miniature which gives them a very tough protective layer (tough to the point where it helps keep spears in place) before matting down.
The only downside to that method is waiting a week for the gloss varnish to completely cure before the matt spray is added.

Wow, the original definition of "bullet coating" eh? lol
I use a water-based "diamond-hard" non-yellowing UV-resistant floor varnish on mine, in several thin coats, before the final matte varnish stage. It's extremely tough once it's all fully cured, but I think the stuff you use sounds even more more so!
What are you thinking of using when the Humbrol finally runs out? I dare say something in the car body repair section of Halford's would probably yield some suitable candidates.

Yep, I spend so much time painting each miniature it's heartbreaking if there are any chips as we all know. It does happen, but very rarely.
I think the stuff you use sounds even more more so!
Yeah, the DIT Humbrol stuff is meant for bicycles and stuff like that. It's a trick I picked up years ago- so long ago I can't remember who first suggested it to me- must have been someone at the Edinburgh club, SESWC, but I'm not sure.
What are you thinking of using when the Humbrol finally runs out?
That one's easy; panic! lol
I've still got a few tins left and I always apply is with a small amount of turps so it should last a while yet. I've tried the Humbrol Gloss Spray which wasn't bad but it's bvery hard to prevent pooling with the spray no matter how light the coats one applies.
I dare say something in the car body repair section of Halford's would probably yield some suitable candidates.
Thanks, Halford's is definitely worth considering as they do cater for bicycles and stuff so they may well have something very similar to the Humbrol DIY Gloss. A very good tip. 8)

Super job on those- totally gives a sense of densely packed ranks.

Thanks Pattus Magnus.
The basing was in part inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry where the Anglo Danes are clearly packed in like sardines (see attached images below).

Here are the close ups of the last unit I finished. So, why the close ups? First off it allows for the bases to be seen as individual interactions or conversations between the miniatures. where possible, with my miniatures I try to make each model look like it is part of an organic fighting force This is the case even in Victorian era armies as you can see here:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2eRjYuUno8Hw-FO54sSWTBpFMbqIwizzyEonHwmLTebJ9meSkWxnr8y3CK7zblxnWMVlGWc91pPYfdfw2hLAdgzCfHpWHM6TpCC5Aa8otUyb0xsD8YFH7i_quTOs5JwLEekacaIrcHfcvtahKlQr7gIEd1Zb3DutKKfAW2E6ZEaSS-KiK3vUsMIRTcg/s800/BEJA%20DARK%20SKIN%20TONE%206B.jpg)
This is all the more important with vignettes (to state the obvious):
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjO3sjiil463yc2j1q942iPJL0NXPd--ERzKzS8aHFT-Mh9gwj6PSFMxfNvs3B3HwuaZ9LKOXwD7A-2NfN20-PE0CHxhym18X34dP_rFEAiWUQgjSMPeHTYRDwQd07i-1YwU98_6DIaGWfeMvCbR5APwqyWPSoTLioTdvGq8RkHDaneoyTjsT9iauvQ6w/s1165/MALALAI%20OF%20MAIWAND%201A.jpg)
In the case of the Anglo Danes I wanted to evoke the frantic crush of battle as portrayed in the Bayeux Tapestry. To conjure up the press, the desperation, the sheer brutality and belligerence as illustrated on that famous embroidery.

I hope that, in some small way I have managed to touch upon the press of battle as elucidated in the tapestry in some small way.

Many thanks guys. All commentary very much appreciated.
I'm pleased that I manged to invoke the desired spirit with the composition.

Simply stunning. I've admired your painting style for a while, now. These are up there with your early Byzantines - crisp and vibrant, but with plenty of depth. The posing of the bases is also exemplary. Thank you for the eye candy.

That's very kind of you Old Hob. It's very pleasing to hear that I have managed to pull off the effect effect I was trying to create.
BTW, I don't suppose Old Hob is a variation on Old Bob perchance?

It's a style I've been trying to emulate, with limited success. I'll keep buggering on, though, as I love the look.
I picked Old Hob as a handle when I joined the Oldhammer forum. Basically I was painting 1980s hobgoblins, so the Devil's old moniker seemed a perfect fit.
Cheers

It's honestly just practice; sounds obvious but paint a little every day and you will improve- trying pout new things is a good way to keep interested and the passion going.

Thanks matey.
The basing is actually agnostic and on 40mm x 40mm to get that feeling of claustrophobic desperation. My actual basing is generally rules agnostic; or rather as rules agnostic as I can manage. These units could be used for WAB, Swordpoint, Impetus, Dux Bellorum and various other sets- just by adding or deducting a row of bases, or removal of one or two etc.
My days of rebasing are behind me now; at least that's the plan! lol

Finally, I have the time to drop the Shieldwall markers post!
As usual, there are plenty of pictures, including the mass effect of having a few markers in front of a few units, and more detail on my Just Add Water Blog here:
http://justaddwater-bedford.blogspot.com/2022/10/anglo-danish-shieldwall-markers.html (http://justaddwater-bedford.blogspot.com/2022/10/anglo-danish-shieldwall-markers.html)
As some may have gleaned, I'm not really a fan of clutter, chits or card/paper on the tabletop and to that end I have been slowly adding a number of Gripping Beast Shieldwall Markers from their Mid/Late Saxon range:
https://www.grippingbeast.co.uk/SAX09_Saxon_Ceorl_Shieldwall_4--product--2838.html (https://www.grippingbeast.co.uk/SAX09_Saxon_Ceorl_Shieldwall_4--product--2838.html)
I was not that impressed with just one marker placed in front of a single unit, they seemed to command the view of the unit, dominating the scene. It was interesting to pull a few units out and get an idea of what they will look like en masse, when placed on front of a six/seven unit line on the tabletop.
Overall, I'm quite pleased with the results, they definitely look better to the fore of several units and not quite so dominant which was a relief! :D
Shieldwall Markers (The latest two, the tally is now three so plenty more to paint up):

These little bases were put together as I took a breather for a week during The Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge which I have been enjoying. The idea of punctuating the Thematic Byzantine posts with some smaller mini projects has really helped me keep focused on the main item and if the weather changes so I can get my bloomin' varnishing done I will have posted three mini projects as well as five Thematic cavalry posts by Monday next week. Not bad going for someone who usually paints at a glacial pace!
There are many more pictures of each of the three bases on my Just Add Water Blog here:

Blimey. A week you say? If I could knock out three bases as good as that in a lifetime I'd be made up.
Base 2 is wonderfully cinematic. You can almost hear the dialogue. And I'm really impressed with the freehand wyvern shields in this thread. Are the banners LBM?

Cracking stuff Darryl 8) 8)

Lovely painting as usual. :-* :-* :-*
And the shieldwall markers look nice in front of the unit.
-
Great figures!

Those command bases are very nice. I like the shield wall markers as well. Great stuff.

Thanks to all for the kind words- appreciated as ever :)

Thanks, unless I'm working at speed (well, speedily for me!) then I either paint the shields or paint the banners freehand. It's actually fun (or it is in my head lol )
Are the banners LBM?
They are indeed. I cut off the tails in the banners- it just seemed more appropriate.
