So I got this laser cutter thing and I've had a few projects that I've wanted to to for a VERY long time.
One of them is creating a few VSF airships, so here is the beginning of my attempts. This is the beginnings of an airship that will eventually have railings, a crows nest, at least two more lower decks on the rear compartment, and quite a bit of decoration/detail added to the outside eventually.
Ive spent about 15 hours designing and redesigning this thing so far, I expect it to start to go quicker as I get more experience, but his is my first go at something complicated.

Looks promising :)
Are you going to do everything on the laser, railings etc (please say no ;) )
cheers
James

Top to tail on the laser :o
-
I'm sorry, but I fear 'mad monkey' sounds apropos... :o
Looking VERY promising, don't let James fool you. :-*
Just out of curiosity, does the cutter let you do surface etching? Is that how you got the planking on the deck? Are you tempted to do more complex embellishments? (By the way, if so, you may well have progressed to 'mad great ape...') lol
Don't forget the '...and all things airbourne.' sticky.

Thanks for the encouragement, and I won't. There are lots of folks our there making cool airships by hand, I'm simply not one of them.

Yeah, surface etching is easily done, that's how I did the planking on the walkway. Eventually all the deck with have planking and all of the sides will have 'boards' etched in. It's just that nothing is final in the design yet, so any time spend working on decoration will have to wait for the structure to be completed.

Perhaps when she's finished :)
Thanks again.

Shaping up nicely! Ah, the wonders of modern technology.

Furthest thought from my mind!
Though, some nice swirling motifs of arcane and archaic significance... lol

Worked on the lower back deck for the past few days. Had to redesign about three times now. I'm happy with the current way this deck is going. It will get a railing on the front and I may possibly extent the balcony part about an inch, haven't decided yet...
There will be one more deck below this one, non functional, just enough to give it a cool profile with a 'fin-type' effect below.
Here is the profile.
I'm going for use with 28mm figs, but only had a couple of 22mm-ish guys sitting around ready for photos.
I wanted a lot of play space on the top decks so that walkway is big enough for two 30mm bases to stand on the width of it. Everything else is based off of that.
Next to finish the back panel on this deck and shore up a few measurements so I can a nice tight fit on this deck. Then to finish up the final level and then the railings. Lot's of railings will be needed to finish this guy off. Wouldn't want to go flying around the sky with no safety measures between you and a 1000ft drop...
-
Everytime I'm away these wonderful projects come along. Bravo Sir most splendid :o :D ;D :-*
-
...so that walkway is big enough for two 30mm bases to stand on the width of it...
Bit of a surprise to me, as I was fooled by the foreshortening, but the last image lets me gauge the figure, and makes all clear.
Impressive battles to be fought there, me thinks!
Excellent!
Doug
-
Thanks DLIinVSF, I appreciate the complement :)
@the_beast: I thought that I needed to give it a little scale so folks had some ideas of the size. I usually use 28-30mm figures, so this may make it look a little bigger than it will in the end.
I've been laid up by an emergency appendectomy, so work on this baby will cease fo about a week or so I imagine. I will have lots of design time, but little chance to cut. I need to train my 11 year old daughter to run the laser maybe?

Thinking about may halt for a week or so, but my experience is to at least treble that time or more to start DOING anything. Which is fine, of course. Only directive: heal and heal well.
You'll thank me later.
Eleven year old daughters can really surprise you, but if she starts laughing maniacally at the thought...
No, you were right the first time. Cute joke. Not to mention the single directive.

Alright, on the mend now and have begun to work on the ship again. I had an 'ah-ha' moment today and totally redesigned the bridge deck with the supports on different walls and it works sooo much better. Still looks the same in the pics but the final model will be MUCH more stable for the switch.
Here is the profile, I quite like the hornet/klingon type curve as it arches forwards. I had intended to add one more deck below this but as it will have zero effect on play or functionality, I'm just going to add a cool shaped 'keel' to it instead. The option is totally there to add it in later if I want. The bridge deck is one module, so it would be a simple act of adding another module below it.
My first try at railings, I'm pretty chuffed at how they turned out, pretty rock solid to boot!
Some 28-30mm dudes to give it some scale. I'm already planning to add two inches to the mid deck and two inches to the fore deck.
Eventually, I'll run railings over the edges of all these decks. I think it will add quite a bit of character.

Damn! Really, just DAMN. :-*
However, as I've already betrayed a certain lack of visual discernment, be a bit before I get the rest of your adjustments worked out, though I thought the further lower deck a 'below the bridge too far...' lol
Does it please that I covet your work?
Slow down, stay well.
Doug
-
Does it please that I covet your work?
Yes, very much. Feedback is really what keeps the work rolling. Sooo many ideas in my head for stuff, so feedback helps me focus on this project for a while. :)
-
No problem there; this is really quite exciting!
However, be careful for what you wish: I'm liable to muddy the waters with awkward suggestions. lol
Doug
-
Here we are, finished the keel and glued these pieces together to see what it would look like. The back deck still needs railings and the propeller parts added to the side of the back deck.
But I really like the profile and don't think I need to keep changing anything here.

That ship looks awesome. Excellent laser cutting skills.

Guns. Needs guns... lol
Doug

Thanks cuchulain23 :)
Guns. Needs guns... lol
Doug
First things first. I'm going like a house on fire now! Adding the railings now and it affects all three modules so I'm having to think through lots of issues at once. So as not to cause to many redisigns, I'm also having to think through the crow's nest at the same time. So it should be a pretty radical difference next time it's seen :)
-
Coming along :)
Are you going to bulk out the rams?
cheers
James
-
The Rams are two sheets thick at the moment and won't get any thicker, but I intend to add more design elements to them. One of the ideas I'm kicking around is a steel looking reinforced edging. Is that what you are asking?
Until I know that everything fits together, I'm spending very little time on style and details.
-
...
Are you going to bulk out the rams?
...
Personally, I assumed he'd get by with the lased surface designs giving it more dimensionality. :D
However, if he simply MUST greeble... ;)
"First things first." Oh, come on, you know I was teasing. Guns are definitely near the end, but I get the feeling you wouldn't mind seeing the Martian 'loaded for b'ar!'
You mentioned props earlier. Do you have a sense of blades or clear, plastic disks?
Doug
-
Sorry, it's a language thing :)
By bulk out I meant thicker, more layers etc.
cheers
James
-
Beast - i'd prefer actual propellers but unless I can source them easily, I'll go with clear disks. Either way is a win I think.
Jimbibbly - No worries. Each ram is two layers and I will add another layer on the edges for depth, but that will be it. Each is a huge use of material and that's what really stops me from increasing the number of layers too much further.
-
Lego actually do propellers... I'm working on a design to mass produce (well make 5 at least!) ornithopters and they come in at about the right size and without the raised recesses.
-
Fantastic work! ;)
-
Fantastic work! ;)
Thanks David! I recently bought your rules and think they would go great with this ship! I can't wait for my daughters to get a little bit older so I can a little Pulp Alley with them.
-
Finished adding rails to each section, but have only had time to print the fore deck and walkway. Put the fore deck together and a crows nest that I built today to. I like it but it may interfere with another idea I had, we'll see. I wanted to run ropes to the top of the 'masts' from the front of the ship and the back, I'll wait and get the whole thing together before I make any changes.
I had to redesign the railing posts to make way for the overlap of the armor plates, just another learning opportunity.

Alright, more railings. Added the walkway with more railings and decking. I also added a bit of detail to the bottom of the mast. I'll likely try and add another ring to give it a bit more depth. I've finished the back deck, but I'm still waiting for the glue to dry.

Great project - love the crows nest - following this with interest
Blodwin
-
Simply fantastic (in both senses of the term). I look forward to seeing it completed and crewed.
-
Thanks Blodwin, I've already redesigned it, but just so it will fit better, it still looks the same. :)
So here is the entire top level of decks in a test fit to see if I got the railing correct. I think I've got it, I'm going to change how they meet so I can place the walkway easier, but otherwise, pretty good fit.
I also added some 'rigging' to see how it went. It will cause a bit of a redesign of the crows nest and some other pieces I'm going to make to attach the ropes to.

Test MDF propeller, not to shabby. I've already got two more dynamic designs ready to cut. The next design step is going to be getting the propellers created and added to the side of the back deck.

I'm getting really close to final version of this unit! Lot's of small details to get to once I get the general body done. Until next time...
-
Been following this thread with interest. It looks a bit wonky to me... but hey, that is a GOOD thing! :D
A couple questions for you:
Are you going to add any more structure above that huge deck, more precisely on the aft section?
How do you plan to base this behemoth? Won't the keel get in the way?
Overall though, keep up the great work. Those railings came out jolly good!
-
A couple questions for you:
Are you going to add any more structure above that huge deck, more precisely on the aft section?
Thanks Ray. Nope the decks will remain clear for plenty of swashbuckling action, more room to play. It's my understanding that seafaring races would float a boat and then build upwards. So skyfaring races would build a ship and then not be constrained by the same limits, so building downwards from the deck is the way they went on Mars. :)
How do you plan to base this behemoth? Won't the keel get in the way?
I have a sheet of clear acrylic that's just begging to be cut. I have yet to attempt laser cutting acrylic, but the base will be built first in MDF, then once I know the dimensions, I'll create it out of clear acrylic. Though I'm thinking once I've painted the final version, it will most likely hang from the ceiling in my basement :) Unless my wife let's me pop it on the mantle in the living room, so most likely the basement...
Overall though, keep up the great work. Those railings came out jolly good!
Cheers, thanks for the q's and kind words! This is the most fun I've had in the hobby for years, I'm really enjoying it.
-
Alright, cut the newest version of the bridge deck last night and glued it on. Man, that keel is pointy!
The major design is solid, so I've started to add some details to the ship now, trying break up the large flat spaces here and there.
I moved the crows nest back a bit so it didn't interfere with the rigging and added some caps to the masts.
Been playing with some interesting ways to tie the rigging to the hull. This idea is currently in the lead, I think it adds some visual interest/style to the back of the ship.
My experiments in creating a cool propeller are still advancing, but have a ways to go. Here is the latest version.

Liking the progress :)

Ah ha! That is the kinda thing I was referring to.
Perhaps it is a bit understated though, given the rest of the ship's dimensions.
What-ever... looking very nice.
-

The great thing about laser cutting this is that it's totally reproducible. I'm planning on making a second version for myself, sort of a sister ship to this one. I could be persuaded to sell one or two, but I'm not setup for production and they would likely be expensive, I'll have to see how many sheets of material I can get the final one down to.
Thanks Jimbibly, I appreciate the compliment from someone as skilled as yourself :)
Perhaps it is a bit understated...
My favorite kind of statement! 8) There's lots more coming, just one more 'have to' before I start the 'because it looks cool' stuff. I'll also be open to ideas from the crowd as I'm not normally the nautical sort. Once I've done everything I can think of, I'll open the floor for suggestions.
-
I could be persuaded to sell one or two, but I'm not setup for production and they would likely be expensive,
How expensive?
How about just PDF blueprints - to see if we can get them cut locally?
-

Unfortunately fastolfrus, I run a hobby business and I've got a recently purchased multi thousand dollar laser to pay for, so I'll likely sell the whole thing rather than the plans. I'm just not to the point of thinking about it yet as the final project isn't finished.
-
Just whipped up a few details yesterday to see how they look.
The first one is a set of rigging mounts for the front, I based them on the rear ones, but they also look a little horn like as well.
These two details seem solid, but I think I will want to change them slightly. I think the hatches on the side could be a little smaller. I also think I will decrease the number of rivets/bolts on the keel reinforcement.
-
WOW this is looking great - sorry I have not commented before - but only just seen it.
Good luck with the build.
Tony
-
You know...
"...I bet it takes about an hour and 15 minutes of actual cutting time on the laser..."
...doesn't sound like much, but then you imagine someone producing them en masse.
I'm starting to be a bit sad as to how much I assume you'll have to charge. And, that time is without the added details to which I've waxed lyric. *sigh*
Did you ever consider beveling the top 20-25mm to vertical on the rear hull? lol
Doug
-

Fair enough. When you said you "might sell one or two" it didn't read quite so commercially minded.
I'd still be interested to know the price.
-
No worries Fastolfrus. Right now things are scattered across many different files and to get an idea of how much effort and time it takes to run the off, I'll have to everything optimized. I won't be able to do that until it's finalized and I know exactly what goes on the thing and how many I need. So the process goes like this,
- finish making EVERYTHING that goes on the model
- add board planking details to all pieces
- optimize files using every possible piece of space on a board and making sure not to forget anyting
- cut and assemble the final version, while recording it so there are instructions for others
- then calculate price
- Somewhere along the line, weigh the final as pieces so I can figure out shipping prices/methods
I've had a look around at some other laser cut places and I don't think it will be outside of what folks seem to be paying for laser cut stuff. I'm just a cheap bugger and have a hard time coming up with prices...
I created the propeller mounts yesterday and I'm ready to cut those, likely tomorrow as I have to do the day job today, then onto the second job teaching a night class after that. Not many big decisions to go after that...
-
No, the problem is I'M just a cheap bugger, and am daunted by their admittedly reasonable prices. :D

I'd still be interested to know the price.
Even so, so say we all!

Couldn't help myself, got home at 10pm last night and fired up the laser to try out the latest addition, so a few hours later we have propellers!
You can't have a boat without propellers right? Or sails, but we won't mention those...
I've been trying hard to make a more 3D propeller, but all of my experiments have been to delicate to warrant on a piece that is supposed to be used for gaming. Here are the new propeller mounts. EVENTUALLY they will be slotted into the main side panel of the aft deck, I created these extra panels just so I can test fit them and see where they look best. I think the aesthetic will be greatly improved once they are added on the main panel.
Still trying to decide on the length of the propeller shaft.

We wouldn't be grown men playing with toys if we didn't wonder if it spun...
Here's a whacky idea I had to see if I could stretch a rubber band between the two propeller shafts to add some 'realism' to the workings of the propeller. I'm not sure if the added complication is worth the effect?
I wasn't totally happy with the hatches that I created for the midship section, so I made them a bit smaller. I also ended up putting one on wonky last time so I created this guide to make sure they were straight in the future.
And lastly I had a play around with an 'anchor' for the ship. I imagine that airships need more of a grappling hook to capture trees or large buildings to hold them in place, so this is what I came up with.
That's all for now, sorry so pic heavy but it's hard to get perspective on these new additions with my simple camera.
-

About you getting your rest... Oh, right, crazy MechaKong.
You can't have a boat without propellers right? Or sails, but we won't mention those...
As this is the decidedly Space 1889 vibe, the ships were either/or.

I REALLY think you can get by with just possibly shading the 'scoop' of the propeller to give impression of depth. RE: Rubber bands. If we need spinning, most of us will go with demountable clear disks.
I also ended up putting one on wonky last time so I created this guide to make sure they were straight in the future.
Oh, HELL YEAH!

Not sure, but several small anchors might even be better. Some could be in harpoon guns, with jagged spikes to fire in to rock walls, and...
I think I'll have a lie down.
Seriously, I should just print out ALL the piccies, so I can finally get my full impression of the changes you've been making. I'm sure subtlety has been lost on me me SOMEWHERE! ;D

Too much? Tried to make a Kort Nozzle for the propellers and add a rudder. I'm not sure if I like it yet.

I have to pick up a small doll rod tomorrow and make the ship's wheel, then that's it. I think it's finished...
Time to start optimizing the files.
Already thinking about a version with a couple of sails...
-
Although I like that design a lot I think it's too much for this build, I would possibly suggest a single rudder at the back like a normal ship?
cheers
James
-
Fantastic build. I love it all - those rudder thingies look the bees knees as well.
My only comment would be if you can get the propeller bodies parallel? Because your rear is tapered the propellers don't appear to be "square". Can you shorten the front support arm to make them square?
-

Thanks for the input James, I really like the design, but think it might be a bit much as well.

This has really bothered me too, but everything is so square right now. :) I'm going to have a play around with a variant or two. The problem is that I tried to give the body some dynamic shaping and the side panel tapers back and inward at the bottom. So I can experiment with a few mounts to put on the side to socket the current propeller mounts in, see if that works. Hopefully it will. If not, the fact that the current one fits together so well will give me solace when I look at angled ones. :)
-
Alright Jon_1066, this is all your fault. I wasn't able to look at the current build with the propellers angled in and ignore them anymore. So, about three hours of making my brain hurt trying to figure out how to get something square out of MDF starting from something angled down and in, and I think I figured it out.
I've added mounts to the side of the aft deck to attach the propeller drivers with. It took a little bit of trial and error, but they are square now.
The mounts above are not really structurally necessary as they don't bare any weight, but they work as well. Slightly more fiddly than I like, but I think the over all effect is worth it.

As a contrary voice, I personally prefer the rudders, two, each behind the propellers. Proper British gentleman of the time would sneer at the term, but 'vectored thrust', don't you know. I've never thought of these things moving fast enough that a stand-alone rudder being much use.
Not that MY reality should EVER be substituted for someone else's.

Looking great!
-
Very impressive. :o

Alright, final design is ready to go.
I found a more streamlined rudder design that is stable enough for me to be happy with it.
I simplified my kort nozzle design as the rings on the kort nozzle used almost an entire sheet of MDF all by themselves. I think I like this design better.

And I built a stand, time to get more acrylic so I can cut it out of a clear material.

Tomorrow I cut out an entire ship to see just how long it takes and to make sure I have everything as it should be on the files. I bough some boxes for shipping as well, so not to long now before everything is in place.

I have been a fan of VSF for 25 years and this is the finest cloudship I've seen! ;D
-
Looks the bee's knees!
Well done!
-
Thanks Gentlemen :o
@MaleGriffin, I actually read that post to my wife 8) Thank you for the compliment!

Hope you don't mind; I repeated the above on TMP. I assume we shall be seeing an image of Fry with the caption of 'Shut up and take my money.' any day now. ;)

FINISHED!!!
I'm finishing up the instructions this week and leaving town for a few days. I hope to sell about 5 first to get things figured out to make sure I've got the price right. So few more weeks before they show up on the store.
Here's a couple of shots of the final build that I put together to make sure everything is ready to go.
I put some LA figures on there for scale and to give it a feeling of action :)

Nice work. I'm interested to see where the project goes.
-
I can't wait to see if I can afford one of these! :D
This is what I see when I dream of a cloudship. :-*
-
And, she must be MINE! >:D
Nice work. I'm interested to see where the project goes.
Goes? GOES? Into my fleet!
No, he meant it when he said 'Finished!' You'll just have to hope folk will buy and paint and piccie on the forum. He's deaf to my suggestions of surface ornamentation, and I can certainly understand, but just imagine exotic Martian script and involved twined carvings... :-*
No fear, she'll proudly be simply a stalwart trader for me. Outraged while waiting on the mantle for the next adventure. ;)

Amazing work. Nice to see decent size flyers in 28mm :-* :-* :-*

Brilliant

That is BLOODY NICE.....
Well I know where my pocket money is going...

Now, hold on fellas. Fergal has hit a major snag, and has been mum for sometime on the lass.
I've been holding my tongue, but I fear I may never see the delightful thing. *sigh*
We shall be patient, continue to hope, but no pressure.

My wife comes home on Saturday, once she's done with the jetlag, we start fiddling with the laser machine until one of two things happens, 1) It's broken or 2) it works. Either way, resolution is forthcoming...

Finally got the airship in the store

OMG!!! :o :-* ;D
I just ordered mine!
THANK YOU FOR MAKING MY DREAM COME TRUE! :D
This is without a doubt the finest Martian airship I've ever seen!
Any chance for European airships? ???
-
Thanks, that made me smile :)
European ones in the works. I've been working on one and it's had luke warm feedback, so I have a couple of others slated as higher priorities, but have yet to start them. I've been sidetracked by this zeppelin thing, and a project for modern era. I'll see how well this sells to see where the queue will head.

Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.
Sorry if that derailed the project. HMS Horatio (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=84755.0)
Honestly, the superstructure, at least the way I saw the piccies, seemed to overwhelm the hull. The screw galley is almost ALL hull.
Looking at Horatio images, I almost got the feeling I get when looking at superdeformed models, and I'm a supporter of Major General Tremorden Redering's views on scale. For me, even bulking up the hull would have helped.
You want me to buy the test build? Would that give you motivation to try again?

It wasn't you Doug, I promise. :) I put the ship up to get opinions, and I think you have to be prepared for the fact that you are on the right track. Who want's to be told it's awesome when it's not?
I've got lot's of things in the works. Got to sort out a new laser first...
-
I'm a bit late to the conversation and very new to Laserprinting.
Is it possible to scale these to 15mm?
-
Wowza!!!!!!
I try to learn new tricks, when I was growing up I learned how to cast lead figures. But nowadays........
Wonder if an old dog could learn laser cutting AND 3-D printing?!?!??!?!
:D
I'm sure there are reviews out here somewhere......plus probably tons of stuff on Youtube! Learn from other folks mistakes!
