Thanks for stopping by my thread; Don't think I haven't been ghosting yours :) .  I'm quite envious of;
A) How prolific you are.
B) What a great job you did on that high priestess and
C)that you got in on the kickstarter to procure it.

Much green monster looking your way :)

Glad you like the fluff.  I hope you are going to share yours.  I know you are ramping up to play and with the Scully comedy short I'm thinking you have some ideas of your own that will be surfacing in due time.  Looking forward to it.  One of the things I appreciate most about this game and other skirmish levels on the LA boards is the number of variations and narratives I see emerging from so many creators.  Experiencing so many alternate universes is a real treat.

Summoning Box [including KS Exclusive Stretch Bonus]

My first full SA 2nd ed box is done :)

Tried to have unifying color scheme for lurkers (other than High Priestess)...for VUK/warbands

[apologies for the lighting...may re-shoot tomorrow...]

Added:

I also should say that the diversity of models/sculpts (other than duplicate serpentmen) made this box a non-redundant pleasure to paint

If you look at all the kickstarter boxes and boosters, there are only a handful of duplicates

It gives each miniature its own story all by itself...not painting 10, 20, 100 of the exact same sculpt

This is part of what makes this product line/universe great IMHO :)

different lighting (10/17/15)

How did you find painting over top of those sculpted eyes on your fish men?  I'm thinking I might be more comfortable over-sculpting blank discs before priming and painting the details freehand.
Title: Re: cutp's Strange Aeons Painting
Post by: cutp on October 19, 2015, 06:05:53 AM
Kind of difficult

You can try and drag the tip of the brush across the raised eyeball to catch it, then clean up edges/rim of the eye if necessary (as opposed to trying to hit the dot straight on with a brush tip)

Can also "cheat" and try and cover up minor mistakes with black wash...

A very nice collection.  I'll be using a scheme quite similar to your demagogue across the board.  I like the uniformity among my fish people (I'm a notorious fish racist :) ), think that the greys would carry over to pallid skins I'd want on hybrids and while I can't be certain (so many sources) I think it might be "canon".  Did you get deep ones in your order as well?  Looking forward to more models soon :) .

I have a question on the game board.  Are those "real" tiles in the patterned areas?  If so, do they add enough weight to prevent the board from getting bumped easily?

I really enjoyed the background you are developing for ATLAS and look forward to learning more about your agency and it's members.  I'd consider localizing my own force but in Canada in the 20's many "large" cities would end up with resources no more expansive than a volunteer fire department :) .

The zombie dogs are neat but I think the cool factor winner in the recent submissions is the bridal party.  The bride and priest look awesome!  Not sure about the groom's orange suit though.  The colour choice suggests a prison uniform; You must be married  :).  The mood of newly wed zombies captured in miniature is perfect.  Ah wedded bliss, the beginnings of a new life together...for all of rotting eternity.  Rats!  Sometimes the SA models take their subject and find a way to convey the feel of it perfectly.  I really want to get a set of those.  Now, what about the that AAR  lol?

yep, orange is the new black! (sometimes pen pal-to-prison marriage doesn't work out as planned)

there's a prison/asylum feel to many of the figures from the graveyard box:

prison clothes: mad scientist victim, blasphemous construct, henchman, groom (even the maniac)

orange accent: priest's victim's arm, bride's flowers

Post by: horridperson on November 02, 2015, 07:45:09 PM
Nice!  I wasn't playing close enough attention and didn't see the pattern.  In a twenties game wouldn't the inmates have the striped suits?  I'm not sure when corrections went to blues then high visibility oranges but I'm just being picky.  Asylum inmates didn't do much better than prisoners and likely fared worse in the period.
Title: Re: cutp's Strange Aeons Painting
Post by: obsidian3d on November 02, 2015, 09:44:29 PM
I actually don't think it's ever been consistent across an entire country. In the US I think county, state and federal handle things differently (although there may be some guidelines or even proper rules). I'm not sure how they handle it here in Canada at all.

My vote is on the Admiral.  Sailors go all over the place, and visit some fairly disreputable establishements.  He probably got shanghaied in Shanghai.  One to many umbrella drinks with a grass skirted companion (if we are mixing metaphors.  The lai was made of black lotus.)  When he came to there was an entity sharing his body.  Things went downhill from there.

Just saying.

Title: Re: cutp's Strange Aeons Painting
Post by: horridperson on November 03, 2015, 06:14:38 AM
My first instinct was to go with the Admiral as rcketscientist suggested.  It just felt right for the stories I cooked up in my head that were similar to his suggestions.  Then I had a look at the source of omniscience; Wikipedia.  Grayson had been around President's proceeding Wilson.  From 1907 on he was on the presidential yacht and had access to Roosevelt and Taft who were to very different Presidents.  It also worth mentioning that the "quality" of Roosevelt, Taft and Wilson (On a best to worst Presidential analysis) places them as very similar.

There were rumours surrounding the Widow Galt; That she had poisoned Wilson's first wife as well as her own husband who had died some years before.  Gossip makes for good stories but what sold me on her was her education.  She was brought up as the caregiver for an invalid grandmother who educated her.  I thought there was some good creepy potential here.  What did she learn from the old woman?

Here is the excerpt that most interested me

"Edith had little formal education. Her sisters were enrolled in local schools, but she was not.[11] Her paternal grandmother, Anne Wiggington Bolling, played a large role in educating her.[12] Crippled by a spinal cord injury, she was confined to bed[9] and had Edith wash her clothing, turn her in bed at night, and look after her 27 pet canaries. She also taught her granddaughter to read, write, speak a hybrid language of French and English, make dresses, crochet, knit, and embroider;[3][12] Furthermore she encouraged an appreciation for poetry and music in the young girl[8] and instilled in her a tendency to make quick judgments and hold strong opinions, personality traits Edith would exhibit her entire life.[3] William Bolling read classic English literature aloud to his family at night, hired a tutor to teach Edith,[3] and sometimes took her on his travels.[11]

During her childhood, Edith was particularly impressed by the songs and folktales she heard. Every day, the family gathered in Grandmother Bolling's bedroom and listen to her sing songs and tell romantic stories of people who found true love;[12] these songs and stories also left a deep impression on Edith.[3][12] The Bollings attended church regularly; Edith would be a lifelong devout Episcopalian."

I prefer the more plausible vector to Wilson that Bolling Galt suggests and really like her peculiar education as a source of strange knowledge.

.....
I agree on the hassle of painting striped prison uniforms.  I think I will paint any models I pick up as asylum inmates so I can paint them in off whites or grimey sackcloth like clothes.

Make sure you download the Christmas scenarios to play with, your Santa will look great on the table for those!

I really like Maniac Santa and the ghoul is grisly but the two ghosts are my favorites.  I think you made the right choice to paint the them.  The girl looks awesome.  If you had left it see through the detailed embroidery on her dress would have been difficult to spot and it would have been a shame.  The red eyes on both models leap out of the monochrome palette.  Eerie effect.

Did you think my vote for Wilson's wife was a bad idea?

First off, I agree, the paint jobs are spot on.  I have been trying to come up with a way to maintain a partially translucent effect with the clear plastics, but no love to date.  I like the desaturated appearance with a dab of colour, much more unsettling.

My apologies for the long story that follows.  It contains no facts or things to enlighten.  Just conjectures, suppositions, and disturbing stuff.  Please feel free to ignore it.
=============================================================================
On to the question of whether it was Col. Mustard or Mrs. Peacock.  I have to apologize for my shoddy investigative effort.  horridperson was quite right to do a little digging.  It prompted me go into dark places, where there is only the sound of things skittering away from the light, and mildew is the eau de jour.

I found evidence of a much larger conspiracy, involving not just the American presidency, but other leaders and wars around the world.  I know, this sounds just too fantastical.  I have to admit I did double up on the caffeine this morning, but I am sure it has worn off.  Along with the medication from last night.

Mrs. Wilson ne Bolling Galt (referred to hereafter as Wife2) and the Admiral (referred to hereafter as the Admiral), were indeed involved, but not necessarily as it would first appear.  They were involved in the situation together.  IN FACT, it was the Admiral that introduced Wilson to Wife2, after he had gained the Presidents trust.  But their conspiracy was not to harm the President, but to save him.

This story goes back many years.  Ellen Wilson ne Axson (referred to hereafter as Wife1), was born to a dark cult.  When young Woodrow "met" her as a child, he was caught up in the beginnings of a spell that would see him in her thrall in later life.  Wife1 grew up in a cabal, learning the dark arts.  Their intentions were to subvert the United States presidency, and Wife1 was just one of their tools.  Their Master's had long range plans, with many tendrils.  When Wife1 and Woodrow were married, Woodrow started political writings that were critical of current government, and sought to change the balance in Washington.  Strings were pulled in his career, and he went from being a college lecturer in 1988, to President of the United States in 1912.  All efforts were made to enable this, including the corruption of ex-president Roosevelt during his trip to the amazon, so that he would run in the election, splitting the republican party vote, allowing Wilson to win without a majority.

During the time before he became president, a favorite vacation spot for the Wilson's was in Bermuda.  It was there that the final subversion of Wilson occurred during a ritual held deep in the jungle by a voudan cult.  Once Wilson assumed the presidency, he worked to grow the executive branch and develop more authority.  When World War I broke out, Wilson strove to keep America out of the war, because the dark masters were behind the Central powers.

The Admiral was recruited early in his career to fight against the dark forces.  Similarly, he was moved up through the rank and file faster than normal, by a group that was trying to counter the machinations of the dark ones.  They got into the inner circle of the presidency earlier than their foes.  He kept an eye on the Presidents, monitoring whether they were under any outside influence.  Then came Woodrow and Wife1.  Waiting just long enough to confirm his suspicions, action was needed.

Wife2 was indeed home schooled, but to keep her from any occult influences.  Her grandmother was a spiritualist/animal handler, and the canaries were her warning alarm in case any evil found them.  She had been crippled during the disruption of a foul ritual that sought to open a gateway.  This brought her into the view of a nascent organization that had banded together to fight the Cult of the Black Goat.  They councelled her to take her gifted granddaughter away from prying eyes and bring her up without any possible evil taint.

Skip ahead several decades.  The President was under the thrall of Wife1, ready to let the Cult of the Black Goat win the European theatre, and then welcome them to the western hemisphere.  Something had to be done.  Wife1 was handled with extreme prejudice.  As a doctor, the Admiral's diagnosis of Bright's Disease was not questioned.  Then, before the Cult could send in another handler, Wife2 was brought in.  Through her own abilities, she started disrupting the progamming that Wilson had undergone, slightly at first, increasing as it was possible.  It all went unnoticed by the Cult until the deprograming had reached the breaking point.

That is what happened in the City of Angels.  The final tether was broken.  The Cult realized their plot was undone.  They sought their own extreme measures. At this time they had another individual under there persuasion.  The Vice President, Thomas Marshall.  He was a sleeper this whole time, hidden even from the Admiral.  He opened a portal that allowed minions of the Cult to get to the President.  The President's protective services rallied and fought them off, but not before Wilson was badly harmed.

To avoid any implication that Wife2 and the Admiral were indeed agents of the group that was to become Threshold, their identities were not just hidden, but misinformation was spread that they were responsible somehow for the President's condition.  But behind the scenes, they assisted in educating the now fully aware President Wilson of the truth.  It was out there.  And Threshold was born.

Just my two cents.

Your cultists look good in blue.  Nice choice to make the hood harmonious with the robes.  I agree that the cultists are a good looking sculpt all the way around.  I wish I had got in early enough to score the additional cultists with scoped rifle, tommy gun and the sledge;  Maybe not as they would probably snipe, perforate and pulp my poor agents :) .  When I finish my new post apocalypse piece I'd like to paint up my cultists too.  Someone started a cultist thread on the forum so I might post them there rather than on my CORD thread because I'm not sure how they feel about double posts.  I think I'll run off with your idea and do a group shot there and keep the singles on my thread.

I agree, the colour selection on the cultists works well.  I really like how you did the rope details.  Can you share your recipe?

Glad you enjoyed the hypothesis.  I figure this way you have choices ranging from a common "On The Road with Bing and Bob..." plot line, to "down a rabbit hole to the other side of the looking glass".  You cannot be too paranoid, innocense proves nothing.

You have definitely motivated me to dust off my paint brushes.

thx rcktscientist & obsidian3d 😊

rope belts are pretty straightforward

paint bone/cream color

if u make a mistake it's easier to clean up the robe's basecoat than to kill yourself trying to be perfect on the belt

couple light washes with brown wash

u can stop there or try a very very light dry brush with same bone/cream or even straight white...that's it...

Nice work! I agree the two tone blue works nicely!

Also, an ink wash also helps cover up sloppy paint work as well....then as you said touch up a little with the robe base color and done.

does the free points allotment for gear work in the way described above, as an "EP credit"?  i guess i read it as "can have x cost item for free, but has to buy anything nicer at full cost."  note that i am also terrible at math, so if it all works out the same way, ignore me.  :)

super cool idea on the "pre-loaded" lurker lists though.  thanks a ton for your effort and sharing!  keeping my eyes on the mailbox for my solo and twisted fate decks, will tear into your module as soon as they arrive!

Great work cutp!  I was wondering about how to go about building lurker lists for solo play and you not only provided pre gens as a starting point but made them thematic as well.  Because I'm shooting for story driven solos rather than something that will best beat up my investigators this is awesome.

@Uncle Mike.  I had a look at UMWW and didn't see twisted fate or solo decks in the shop.  Are you out of stock and if so are there plans in place for making some more available down the road?

In either case I still have mountains of models to paint, terrain and a dedicated play surface to make ready so I'm not in a mad rush.  Next on my, "to do" list are my cultists (saw the dedicated thread for the month and cutp's completed models :) ) and a thug to hang out with my agents because I found a perfect model for the job.

Post by: mdomino on November 10, 2015, 03:24:51 PM
Yes, I'm not sure about the EP credit. The wording in the rulebook still needs clarification.
I did loads of these pregen lists for 1st edition, mostly to speed up the games and help new players choose a lurker list. They are themed- shooters, HTH, mob, ghosts, ghouls, undead, etc.
That first cultist list, while nicely armed, will have significant trouble against threshold without a model able to "command" them. I've got a few generated for 2nd edition I will post soon.

sorry no pics today

thx UM, forcedperfect, wally, horridperson & mdomino :)

mdomino: u prob right; haven't played my lists yet, but idea was thematic (not gameplay)

also trying to prep so don't have to "build" lurker list...just couple of dice and pull figs

underway: victorian-ish row house...not fast so not tomorrow but hopefully soon

also may paint up some cthulhu wars big minis next (or not...)...not great correlation between SA profiles and CW minis

:)

PS if EP ended up taking liberties, will re-work lists or just leave as is as house rule...who knows!

PPS I like everyone else's posts even if I didn't specifically comment...and everyone else who hasn't posted, please do! :o

I like the idea of pre-made lurker lists, and adding where the figures came from can really help focus identifying what lot to acquire (or paint) next.

I think the EP credit goes along with a rules answer by Uncle Mike somewhere.  Not sure exactly, but I believe it sticks to the intention of what is written.

Anyway, I tried out the process yesterday on a solo game.  One data point, so I can draw all kinds of concrete conclusions.  The lurkers ended up being the Armed and Dangerous crew.  As my agent list was 18 points I had to mod the list a bit.  It was fairly lethal.  The agents just barely won.  50% loss on each side.

I came up with a few thoughts on the implementation.  First, you kind of need to ignore what the scenario directs you to do with the lurker list.  Not sure how this will play out for each specific scenario.  I plan on playing a few more times to see what develops.

Second, perhaps adding some suggestions for what to add if you need to bump up the list cost.  For instance, as commented on by mdomino, to increase the points, I replaced a cultist (armed with a .45) with a cult leader (armed with a .45.)  Just took the profile from the Dark Offerings list, dropped the hollow points.  So, I think some generic "add ons" are possible for each list, maintaining thematic continuity.  It might take a little trial and error, but I think suggestions can be developed.

Basically, I found it really made getting a solo game in much quicker.  Particularly because I can just pre-write the essentials of each list, add a pinch to correct points, and start rolling dice.

Well done cutp.

I was not able to download the pages, so wrote it up long hand.  Is there a file you might be able to send me? I would like to keep tracks of my puts and takes.  Thanks

Title: Re: cutp's Strange Aeons Painting
Post by: cutp on January 29, 2016, 07:14:04 AM
thx cultist steve, obsidian3d, grumbling grognard & mason 😊

half block refers to the relationship between my boards and buildings

my boards are mostly 1' x 1' (sorry metric) plus some 1' x 2' and 2' x 2'

the "cut outs" in the boards to fit modules are ~8" x 8"

so modules are typically "full" block (slightly less than 8" x 8" by 1/16th"), half or quarter

I guess I originally envisioned two mirrored or substantially similar buildings

but this took so long (on construction) that I'm not sure I have the patience anymore...

(i.e. why I like the SA KS content better than painting 100x the same figure...)

more soon (hopefully) :)

PS I think it's really worth it to create boards and terrain that match your taste and aesthetic...

thx uncle mike (I like it too!) :) PS looking forward to 2016 SA releases and hope some of the boxes are broken up into smaller packs and/or individual figures...

thx reviler x2 (wanted a bit of RPG-style background & a nice board/terrain...it's worth the effort if you love this hobby) :)

thx wallytwest (working toward a full 360 degree treatment of SA v2; my first foray into the 1920's & cthulhu) :)

Ha- in some other gaming I have done (Saxons, Korean War, X-Wing) I have created "Immersion Packets" for club games or specific scenerios. Some paper describing the scenerio or event to make it easier for pickup and play- or designed for the personal enhancement of a single campaign/game series.

You have done an outstanding job on these "Print Items"- love the Atlas Cover Page: might I suggest classification lines as headers on the top and bottom of your pages?

**Edit- and perhaps a ATLAS seal for individual pages- like the department of the army might have at the header of a Memo page? Similar to U.Mikes "T" graphic.

You did great again with your ATLAS cover page!! I like the RPG feel that this game provides. I am currently painting up the starter box, and I think I will add a bio to each of my agents. You have definately inspired me. I have never built any terrain, but I like this game so much, and seeing your awesome results, makes me want to build terrain now.

thx wally x2 [PS add you country/city to your profile...if u want]...I agree with your point on headers/footers...I think I may font/layout inconsistencies already...I prob won't go back and update in near term but I should...haven't really finalized my thoughts/ideas on a logo...

ths reviler...yep let's see your profile write ups..and painting [start a thread!]...don't worry, start small or wherever u are comfortable...and keep going...it's rewarding and great to share!

Although fictional, Innsmouth Massachusetts is nearly exactly where I am.

I have classification headers and dates on a number of other setting documents I have created (40K, WW2, Star Trek) and they really help with authenticity.

Nice.  I had the same figure come back from Sri Lanka just a few weeks ago.  I have yet to use her.

The "name" came naturally for her as instead of a blue dress, I told them to paint her's "Red".  Then added some strawberry highlites to her locks.   I do like to Keep It Simple...  So, my suggestion to you is "Violet".   ::)

The lorries are pretty sharp.  I thought I'd commented on your pyramid before and told you it looked awesome but it seems I didn't.  Sorry about that.  Good looking collection but you really shouldn't be posting that many models at once or people will be demanding an AAR :P .

Thx horridperson ... still feels weird ;)

We'll see about AAR...

Styx it's an old GW/citadel case that I never used that came with a GW paint set (don't remember year)

3 levels in one latched case

All my other stuff is in Chessex cases...which are my favorite and highly recommended!

Hoping UMW eventually offers blisters (subsets of boxed sets) and individual figures too...

And makes new sculpts for all/many of the agents and lurkers in SA 2nd ed book...

Also want more female agents...

:)

PS I do plan on lettering/signage on side of my lorries eventually...

Victorian(ish) Row House
Half block module

Attic

The investigators made their way up to the attic, expecting to find the same thing...nothing.  Lo and behold!  The low-ceiling crawl space had been converted into a makeshift temple to some foul idol.  The bronze statuette was repulsive yet uncomfortably soothing.  Then its eyes starting to glow and they could hear strange gurgling and inhuman screams inside their head...

thx gun bunny & horridperson :)

basically idea is to make various building archetypes for my board (see earlier in this thread) that are (to my eyes) visually interesting and playable, inside and out (more planned...)

primary materials
plywood (~ 1/4", 7/32", 5 mm)
popsicle sticks (have to eat a lot of popsicles; also available at craft store)
stirrer stickers
thin wood squares and rectangles for tiles, cut and sanded to shape
wire rod (for occasional pinning)
patience (!)

primary tools
square
utility knife
metal ruler
sandpaper block
file
solder iron (to burn wall brickwork)
wood glue
clamps
table saw
mitre saw
drill

:)

Wow, very cool to see your building plans (and to see the somewhat finished building)

A minor tip: brick is seldom uniform, by using washes and/or paint to differentiate the brickwork, you will get a more vivid building.

Haha, I know that feeling. Got a lot of terrain that I find finished, where others have come with 'helpful' advice (on the building I posted I got the advice that "it would look great with some guttering" - of course it would, but I don't have time, material or energy to fix that...)

Cool miniature, I forgot to write! Have you tried white brush-on primer? Might work better if spray gets grainy.

Also: Love your document. I love in-world documents and one of the best things in the hobby is writing little snippets about the world in my games.
Title: Re: cutp's Strange Aeons Painting
Post by: horridperson on November 25, 2017, 06:46:50 AM
If the humidity and temperature are good and you have tried a couple different cans (meaning weather and cans themselves are not the issue) and your primer is grainy (worst case you end up with pilling and tooth on your surfaces) it could be you are spraying with the can too far away from your model.  If the atomized paint travels too far before it hits the model it will literally start to dry in the air before it even hits the model causing the mottled surface.  Try bringing your can closer to the figure and see if that helps.  When in close don't spray long or you will flood the figure with paint.  Find the sweet spot (close but not too close) and you should be fine.  Spray short bursts with passes.  Sometimes mass primings will have this occur to models on either end of the line because the sprayer got sloppy keeping the can parallel to the surfaces to be painted.  Hope this helps.  The MO still looks good but hopefully this will help you get a smoother prime to work over top of.

Good ghostly effect
Wich colours did you use

thx harleyface & ockman :)

thrall paint (all citadel/GW)

painted whole figure with pallid wych flesh (except hair)

mixed old ghoul gray with lahmian medium (1:10 ratio) and washed whole figure

then built up recesses with progressively heavier ghoul gray ratio

skin washed with gryphonne sepia

Really sorry I missed the VUK KS but that was when my cataracts were getting bad and miniatures were the last thing on my mind as painting was out of the question. Hopefully they show up on Uncle Mike's shop one day.

Cutp I went and re-read your entire thread (again) and the only thing nicer than your excellent brushwork is the most awesome scenery you have done, and from scratch no less. Most impressive, you're no doubt an inspiration to me and I'm sure quite a few others. Thanks as always for sharing and helping to keep the Strange Aeons sub-forum alive.

That basement is superb! But, won't it be too much of a hassle to move the figures in such a cramped space?
