Nice collection of models.  I was interested in what the written outline was in the first photo.  I suppose it might be a painting plan but it looked like more than that.  Have you got a neat story you plan to share :) ?

To me, it was important to catch the feeling of investigators- and the possibility of sub factions within my group (Agency, Syndicate, Academics, Occult, Investigator); and our traditional X-Com Character Classes (Support, Heavy, Assault, Sniper)

Investigators are EM4/MoonRaker Miniatures- one of the few vintage lines where I really liked the sculpts. Please note they belong to two eras- the smaller original line and the newer 25mm line.

Doug at MoonRaker is a Fantastic Guy- he hooked me up with some great stuff. Thank you Doug for your customer service and great attitude!

Of course, all madness has its origins- this was the first module I ever played for the CoC setting. Lovecraft was completely new to me- I recall bothering the river inhabitants and the inmates- one of whom claimed he was actually of "The Great Race of Yith"-

But the mind blowing thing was the degenerate doctor at the center of the madness- somewhere between the reanimator and a degenerate cultist... It's a pleasure to bring this to life in miniature!

Sculpts are London Thugs from Old Glory, MoonRaker ProtoShogoths, Gothic Horror Doctor, Zombies from Reaper, a dreamblade skinless and a Mega Mini Zombie I had lying around.

Part of the fun for me- I'm a New England native. I actually grew up not that far from the supposed site of Innsmouth. And being a sea coast native to the region and having lived from Bar Harbor Maine to Brooklyn NY (Currently Living in Cape Cod); well the idea of the Innsmouth Look is not too radical... Infact I've been to a few towns that have left me a horrible feeling not too far removed from the terror Innsmouth or Dunwitch....

The Statue is from an old Bag of Cthulhu, Cthulhu Wars Dark Young I got for demoing the game at GenCon (Hi Guys!!! Told you I would post it painted!!!) the MoonRaker Servitor of the Outer Gods and Mikes Fishmen (Best Fish Men out there!)

The real enemy- the man pulling the strings... An old man who has been practicing occult ritual and horrific incantations on the mountaintop- miniature origin unknown (found him years ago at the game castle in Londonderry - not my favorite store.)

The Strange Aeons acrylic set is uncanny- I was sent one for showing my loyalty to the Cult and accomplishing a super secret mission for the society... Way better than the stickers and wood disk idea I had.

This is a great visual aid- great upgrade kit.
(http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x335/WallyTWest/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsargkpuwg.jpg) (http://s1176.photobucket.com/user/WallyTWest/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsargkpuwg.jpg.html)

The cards are also Uncanny- the solo rules work well enough and the twisted fate deck is all but required in play (similar to the Spartian Games faction decks)

Although my 48 hour painting chalange is finished- I still have some work to do on my "Season 2" miniatures at some unspecified point in the future.

Pictured here- the Investigators I got in the Kickstarter.

I would like to take a second to point out the quality of the second edition components- the bases have been weighted and upgraded- details sharpened and the resin holds detail in orders of magnitude better than the mark one models- Mike; you should be proud of how awesome your new sculpts are and the improvement of the line you undertook. It makes the Mk1 models nearly obsolete.

Really- the colored resin makes them suitable for pawns in a boardgame- great choices!

(http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x335/WallyTWest/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpshx7b3bms.jpg) (http://s1176.photobucket.com/user/WallyTWest/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpshx7b3bms.jpg.html)

I'm really torn between Silver Twilight, Black And Red or something more along the lines of Order of Dagon- my gut feeling is I already painted the Fishmen in red...
(http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x335/WallyTWest/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpscvchiiec.jpg) (http://s1176.photobucket.com/user/WallyTWest/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpscvchiiec.jpg.html)

I plan to be a cheap jerk and use the formless thing as a Shiggoth, and the Proto Shoggoths as Formless Things- the watcher is just kinda strange. I don't know if I plan to paint it-
(http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x335/WallyTWest/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsynuswwga.jpg) (http://s1176.photobucket.com/user/WallyTWest/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsynuswwga.jpg.html)

It's worth taking a second to show the overall upgrade- I regret buying the originals. The agent isn't too bad- but the cultist... Eh...
(http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x335/WallyTWest/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsi1qtpfmg.jpg) (http://s1176.photobucket.com/user/WallyTWest/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsi1qtpfmg.jpg.html)

Lastly- "problems" with scale. The mikes miniatures are running the 30mm line. The investigators will likely be in a septate collection from the agency miniatures. (not a big deal)

And a final pic showing some of the extra stuff I have-

Of course- my two favorite pictures...

This game is small kids! this can be played with 3-4/1-10 models a side. This is everything for the game- (no terrain of course). X-Wing model counts and simplicity, low barrier to entry and great gameplay- this is a perfect miniature game!

My philosophy is paint and them in one go to play and then play as much as I can. Setting up the "painting studio" takes a solid day- I also cheated, I had them based and sanded before I started.

It could be a while before I sit down and paint again.

Edit In- it's important to have a uniform presentation - I will be posting some long term campaign play, I intend to focus on "my basics" - Presentation, Mechanics and Story or PMS.

Strange Aeons solid "Space Hulk" core combined with some of the greatest open intellectual property on the market and Mikes freakish dedication to creating a great product has given me an opertunity to explore this fascinating world. Now I have to spin the narrative and give this the spit and shine it deserves!

I've also been very lucky to use a friends vintage CoC set to play many games of this thus far. Call-out to Joyce of Plymouth Mass for letting me use your painted minis to get me into this game. Also to Mitch of 495/The Whiz for pointing me in the direction of this game years ago. And 023 and Games Poet for letting me steal the basing color and inspiring me to stick with miniature gaming despite 5+ years of harsh deployments.

Well.. That's oddly frustrating... At $3 each I am kinda disappointed. These guys do not look like 8 point lurkers. Heck- they are massive. Those claws are must be more than 1D damage...

And 3 of them is just too much- each one feels like a land-raider on the tabletop! They look too imposing- and don't have enough of a Statline to back it up.

Ythians are big though if you go by the CoC RPG rules.

@Horrid Person
Yea- had to get everything done for some gaming on the 31st! ;)

@Litebrite
I just measured them- they are "In Scale" for 25mm. I'm actually twiddling my thumbs. Yes Strange Aeons is a "Home Game" but just making up stats is a little rough. Downright unfair in the light "club" atmosphere. I got to figure out the best way to use these critters.

After re-reading the source material I realized they had not invented time travel, just the ability to push their minds forwards through time and space... (They would make for a fantastic episode of doctor who)

But I needed an alien race to complete the collection- perhaps to even act as a primary villain in a future campaign. The Statline is less than inspiring and the model has more potential...

I don't know; this is kinda a modeling conundrum... I need some inspiration.

Do you have any mi-go Wally?  As you said the yith (formerly great) are a doomed race and act locally (temporally) through possession.  The mi-go are a race of ETs who like putting human brains in jars and conducting nasty experiments.  If you are envisioning a campaign villain race this might work better for a running story.

Your Yith might work if you had a terrestrial organization working on behalf of the Yith but they wouldn't have much face time.

By the RPG rules, the summon spell has no restrictions from 'whence' the being is summoned from. Just need a spell caster to summon it. Mind swap first and then a summoning. The Ythian is here. (the summoning would have had to be done before the scenario most likely and by the team's Nemisis). So part of the storyline.

@Mdomino- those are Em4/MoonRaker models- dated, but great sculpts.

@HorridPerson- MiGo are hands down the most powerful lurker in the book. Great movement abilities, great close combat, great command ability, access to alien weapons, low cost... I've never seen anyone loose a game with them.

And the worst bit- they are from Vermont!

Seriously- a full 1/3 of my games I have spent shooting at MiGo, they have been over used in my group and they are very very powerful. Going up against them is a guaranteed loss. I got to try something different... And now that I have these models I got to figure something out... But they are huge! I threw them on a board last night and they are insane!

Im seriously thinking about selling them to an acquaintance of mine and just being done with them.
Title: Re: Mr West's Pictures (Updated 30 Oct)
Post by: horridperson on November 01, 2015, 06:46:34 AM
That's a shame.  I hadn't bothered reading the stat lines  (narrative/story fixation) and was making my suggestion from a purely thematic point of view.  I liked their background and depending on the sculptor thought they looked really cool.

You didn't have your Yith in any photos with other models but with your hand as a scale those are massive.  Imposing is nice (2x the height of a man sized fig) but if your hand is similar to mine they are topping 3x comfortably.  Any of those heroclix styled prepaints ranges are a janky mess.  The lack of any internal continuity and sculpting standards within their mismatched ranks has always struck me as repulsive.  I won't encourage you to sell them but if I had them I would.  Ugly models are ugly models and if you identify them as such you will never get it out of your head whenever look upon them.

I have a great looking classic grenadier three stage nun.  As a single character model she is awesome (I love the version with the lantern).  I also have SA and 7th ed RAFM CoC models (both scale well with Reaper figs).  She is the odd woman out.  I will paint her up because she could be a petite woman but it is causing me some hesitation.  I'm concerned that I won't be able to overlook the disparity (real or imagined) if I bring her to table.

If you have your heart set on the great race have you considered sculpting something you feel more appropriate yourself?  Even if you have never worked with green stuff before this could be a good project to get your feet wet because the model would be large for a 28mm scaled piece which is good for early sculpts and the details are quite simple and could be achieved with very rudimentary sculpting skills.

I prefer the RAFM one on account of the head "crown" and that it doesn't seem as busy.  I think the Pathfinder model suggests movement better through the conical trunk but it looks big and clunky where I would want mine more ethereal and mysterious like the RAFM piece.

I looked at them both for quite a long time and decided I liked the Pathfinder (maybe) a bit more, and it was about 1/3 the price of the RAFM when it was all done, so it was not a hard choice for me:

You may have made me recant my statement GG.  Beside your CoC model the Yithian looks good.  I can't make up my mind.

Not to "sell" the figure or anything, but my Yithian is *just* a re-base.

I was going to re-paint him, and may still....someday but I have tons of others to paint and the Yithians are so darned powerful in SA I am not sure he will get on the table anytime soon either way.

But, my point is, with a full re-paint, I would like him even more (or at least one would hope!   ;)  )

Interesting to hear that about the mi-go. Then looked at them, and yes, seems to be a very tough lurker for the points. In the first edition, the conglomerate and the nightgaunt were very powerful for the point cost. I see they have been adjusted. I haven't played any 2nd edition games yet. Looking forward to it.

Batch two will take a few days to get ready.

Step one- super gluing the minis to washers,  filling the bases and sanding them- then giving the bases a wash in watered down glue.

Ha- scrap paper!

In the rogue trader campaign we were playing it was their base of operation until it was wiped out last play session by a rival household who loosely aligned themselves with the imperial church and evicted them forcefully after some douchey political maneuvering. Now they are leading the remains/survivors of their shattered colony to a supposed abandoned mining colony to start over. However their side mission is to attempt the recovery of a experimental cruiser that was lost on that planets surface at roughly the same timeframe that the families fortune turned for the worse around m34.

It was based off the idea the lowest layers were Space Marine fortifications from the great crusade, the middle layers were romanisque fortifications/archetecture from the church and the highest layers were high gothic and recent technological advances. They excavated a red shoulder pad just before they left and found some interesting pre-imperial evidence of habitation suggesting the fortifications may be even older.

I meant it to feel like modern troops garrisoning a medieval fortification in Malta or the Middle East.

The real gem was the recovery of some star charts from M34 that showed the archetecture for the development of the sub sector and surveying results that were lost before they could be properly reported. (one eyed willies map) I am stealing the plot from the Goonies...  The second half of the campaign I intend to loosely base off that first half of Catan when you are filling up the island and Italian politics.

Currently the PC's are really at odds with the church; and if they can maneuver some of their clergy into positions of power they are going to experience some greater success.

Thus far the PC's have only seen humans and local animals and vegetation- they are constantly on guard for Xenos and Chaos- but I don't intend for those to play a real part in the story. After all- humans are far more uncaring and horrific in their acts and cruel nature...

You know- that makes for an interesting post.

Currently I am gaming twice a month. Bi Weekly, switching between Week A and B. "A Week" is typically miniature wargaming (winter) or an RPG (Summer). "B Week" is boardgames. Attendance is stable with about 10 members and a show of about 6 for each week.

I intend to get a little more serious, combining the groups into a single named group called the "Innsmouth Historical Society"-

I'm looking into having shirts made and beginning a quarterly bowling outing. Although strange aeons has had some success with this group- my real drive is to complete this pile of lurkers so we can begin campaign gaming and more regular play- with only 4-5 more rogue trader sessions yet to be enjoyed before the conclusion of the summer season I got to get cracking...

For some reason everyone sold/put their warhammer fantasy models into storage... ;)

Another huge problem is cutting down my gaming collection and working on some new bookshelves to display my models and gaming collection-

Together in a single shot- I feel they represent everything I might want for competitive play and to support storytelling as well. Im a little sad they are slightly off scale but considering the age of the sculpts and their utility I am happy with them.

They are the Dunwitch Detectives Ghouls- and they are very interesting - they definitely follow the chaosium interpretation. 3 sculpts are still around for purchase, these guys came from an old blister pack I picked up.

I am unhappy with the paint job- they started their life grey at the beginning of my 24hour paint a thon but failed to inspire much with their looks. Just before I finished I painted them green and although they look uninspiring they are much more serviceable in their current condition.

I'm trying to stick with your and vintage sculpts only- but I could see switching these out for better models in the future.

*Edit- I am finding a single ghoul is often helpful in scenero play.

The link above it to one of the many Hammer Shorts that afflicted my teenage years. Ultimately these are the Ghouls that I feared growing up- the concept of a solemn village given to canabalism over generations combined with the prospect of an isolated town somewhere in my native New-England. Down-east Maine or NewHampshire perhaps...

I think the paint job looks fine...what else can you do really. Greeny fur, check. Red eyes, check...end of list.  :)

Great movie! Will need to show it to my daughter at some point. Help explain her weird dad...

Also, we have an unfinished dossier kicking around the shop called 'Return to Wolfshead'...uses Wolfmen and Werewolves but would work with Ghouls quite nicely. Not sure which I prefer now!   o_o

And in conclusion: I'll be pawing through all my old minis for the upcoming Bitz Day on Sunday...if I find any 'old school' stuff I'll put it aside in case you show up.

"food and clothes come from the boxes! And good eats! :)"

That's fascinating- I've played about 20 games now since the release of second edition. Almost equally split between my own attempts at narative gaming and semi-competitive club play.

I have really been toying around with scenario/narrative sets played over three games in an attempt to make "Mini Modules" or X-Files esque episodes. I've been struggling with including campaign long agenda sheets and non-combat investigation in a miniatures game. Chaos in Carpathia had some elements as well as the doctor who miniature game. I'm making some progress but finding stagnation from a game design standpoint.

One of the pipe dreams at the shop is to play a campaign of games in a "pandemic like stile"- Station Houses, with teams combating outbreaks of paranormal activity. Great idea, but I don't know how I feel about the execution.

I would love to see what your ideas were on the werewolf module. I noticed all the Dunwitch love in the book- I was wondering your thoughts behind that; was that taken conceptually from a book I'm not aware of?

With regards to models I am still looking for-

I am always on the lookout for a passable 28mm/True 25mmRabbi with Golem. Graven produced a 40mm one years ago that I loved the look of that had a very medieval interpretation of a Golem.

Mr. West,

These might not be precisely what you are looking for, but I thought I'd throw them out there for you:
AE WW2 Golem (http://blackballgames.bigcartel.com/product/moaa-golem)
AE WW2 Druid (http://blackballgames.bigcartel.com/product/moaa-druid)

There was a great Rabbi and Golem set that I remember seeing once upon a time, but I can't remember who made it. If I find it, I'll let you know.

Edit:
This one's good too if you can find one:

In a lot of ways this guy represents exactly what I am looking for- too bad he is 40mm! He looks like a turn of the century Orthodox Rabbi looking to deter some horrible otherworldly occult invasion with nothing but a prayer shawl, a Torah and the forbidden knowlage of his forefathers! (in many ways his "obvious" desperation is more heroic then Rabbi Bruce Lee) I may buy this model just to paint!

Idea: I have been looking for a non combat variant for investigation/overcoming scenarios. I had this crazy idea- why not use the dice from elder signs/draw tokens from a bag/variant.

Against an aggressive/very hard plot point/creature effectively immune to damage why not investigate objective markers to gather dice that are then rolled to make a unique victory condition. In a campaign game previous captured objectives could add to this dice pool. Then those dice unlock a damaging attack/ritual to end the scenario or naturalize certian enemies. That would mean a quick moving investigator doing his call of cathulu thing could be important. Vice versa not everything could be won with a stick of dynamite.

Great looking band of merry men (and things) for the game, and nice sized traveling pack.

I like the idea, the difficulty is going to be keeping it fast and relatively simple.  I have been looking at Shadows of Brimstone (for purchase), and the concept of having an "in town" phase could possibly be one way of handling getting dice/tokens.  Basically, a research/investigative phase.  I do not have the Brimstone game, so I am only going by what I have read on forums and reviews.

For this "other" process (non-combative resolution), I was thinking an additional stat would be needed.  Then I realized you could use two existing ones, Dex and Res.  Divide the challenges/puzzles/research/etc. into something either physical or mental.  For instance, breaking into a newspaper archive to find information, would be a physical test, then depending on the number of details needed (how many extra bonuses you are trying for), a number of Res checks.  With a bonus if you have the skill "Bookish" maybe.

Is Res equal to intelligence?  Not exactly, but you can wear people down, or doggedly paw through boxes of information.  I am just trying to prevent having additional complexity, and work somewhat within the game.

Just a couple of thoughts.

I am just DM'ing the "in-between-bit" like I did with D&D back in the 80s and 90s myself.   ;)

I guess I am talking about creating a "Product" for the user comunity ultimately.

I should pick a plot line- and available models. Model some appropriate terrain. Make a PDF.

It would not need to be complicated- it could be card based even- linking the investigative talents and having Agents take actions before a game in a manner similar to the adventure books in Above and Bellow or Arabian Nights. Likely somthing self contained and read to the investigator before the adventure- the outcome would be a piticular scenario with the Lurker or Agents gaining some sort of upper hand. Some sort of meta-game played through the strange aeons encounters?

"adventure packs"- short PDF adventures 3-6 pages in length that would provide a narative setting for the players and lurkers?

Title: Re: Mr West's Pictures (Updated 10 Dec; Finished Agents)
Post by: WallyTWest on December 12, 2015, 03:41:33 AM
Idea 1: Adventure Pack- 4 pages in typeface font on antique paper; they are presented before the battle by the GM or the packet is agreed upon by the players. A super rough sketch, please review the concept- feel free to make suggestions.

Page 1- Narative, Setup and Requirements
Narative- Agency is exploring woods near a mansion of a local official whom is leading a cult, now chasing a cloaked man who is running from grounds.
Lurker Requirements- lurkers must have a cult leader, it is recommended you select a number of cultists armed with melee weapons.
Threshold Requirements- Threshold HQ recommends an agent with ancient lore or a telepath.
Lurker picks force, then page 2 and 3 are handed out.

Page 2- Lurker Page
"Hello esteemed cult leader of the black goat- the inner circle has sent you this letter to inform you that our spies in the agency have learned your cell is currently under investigation. It is highly probable that a raid will be attempted in the next 48 hours." Just as you finish this a pair of automobiles and a number of police and investigators jump out and advance towards the mansion! You and your followers prepare to flee out the back- but before you do you may...

You May:
Set a Trap- You can leave two of your cultists inside the house in an attempt to ambush of the Agents invading your home. (Cost: 2 Cultist, Each must pass a Dex Check)
Activate the Gate- You can make a last ditch attempt to open the portal to an unspecified room in the basement before running out the cellar door- there is a chance you may personally be captured, leaving you and your beloved cult to be slaughtered! (Cost: Res check, and you must roll higher than a 8 on 2D6, add +1 for each spell he knows, then a Dex Check)

Agency Results

Page 3: Agency Page
You have been hot on the trail of the black goat, and learned a local political official is infact a devil worshiping cult leader dedicated to the end of mankind! You have rounded up the local police and just as you kick in the door- you look up to see hooded figures racing into the forest behold the mansion. You may...

You May:
Choose to Quickly Explore and clear the house before pressing into the woods. (Cost: Pick an Agent, they must pass a Res Check.)
Try and decipher the pentagram on the floor (Cost: Pick an Agent-Res Check- Scholar or telepath only)

Page 4
Setting the Trap- setting a trap and clearing the house are linked events. If the cult has chosen to leave two cultists behind to spring a trap, there is a good chance if they have gone undetected they will have an opertunity to murder an agent. If the Dex checks failed; they are discovered and manage to bring down an unlucky officer before the agents manage to put the maddened cultists out of their misery. The agency finds a scroll while searching the house.

If the cultist have successfully hidden themselves to prey upon the agents as they enter the house the following happens:
If an agent was assigned to clear the house before entering the woods he discovers the assailants and has a horrific 2 on one fight in the mannors library. The agent manages to defeat his opponents in a horrible battle, but is wounded and can not participate in the fight- however he manages to find a scroll while waiting for his friends to return.
If no agent cleared the mansion but the scholar (or telepath) has chosen to decipher the script on the pentagram then somthing horrific has happened- just as the agent leans down to investigate the ancient sand script a pair of cultists emerge from the dark and stab the investigator to death before he can resolve his investigation.

If the agents run through the house without stoping to investigate- the cultists manage to pick off the officers guarding the mansion one by one and will join the fight latter, arriving on a table side of the lurkers choice on turn 3

Cult has activated Gate
If the agency has completed the decipher the pentagram action- then the scholar has deciphered the evil creature the cult leader has been trying to bring into this world... One of your agents may be given an Elder Sign for this mission only that works as a CCW. CC+3, Dam 1D6+4 against the Byakhee in this scenario only.

If the cult leader has chosen to stay in the basement and elected to call forth an entity from the basement- the following happens.
If he passed his resolve check, the gate opens for a precious few moments. If he failed this roll then he must run to catch up with his cultists- he is set up on a random board edge in the following mission.
If he passed his summon roll after the res roll, he has summoned a Byakhee that does not devour him on sight! Lucky. If he fails this roll a formless thing emerges from the gate and devours him on the spot! (unlucky)
If he has survived, the cult leader may ride his new companion! If he passes the Dex roll, add the Byankhee to the lurker list at no cost!
If he fails his Dex roll- then the Byakhee flys into the night sky and the cult leader unable to hold on for his dear life falls to his death, impaled on the black gate in front of the mansion. Officer Blaske vomits after watching the cult leader squirm as the life drains out of him.

I guess I'm suggesting a Narative choice book- with about 30-pre scenero brieffings in it, scripts for just before gameplay and culminating in stock scenarios. So.. Like a 90 page booklet. Or- more like 3 30 page books (Threshold, Investigations and XFiles/outcomes).

The scenerio booklets would have the advantage of enough scenerios that it would be hard for anyone to recall all the outcomes. - and the book format would make things insane enough that it would be a guessing game. Scenerio selections would be modularized into chapters (beginning, middle, and final scenerio)

Project would be about 80 man hours to complete, more to bring to published format, more for editing.

Is this a product anyone would be interested in seeing? I would be happy to work on it.

Ah, well  then, I am not your "market" anyway!  I played D&D and AD&D from 1979-1987 very heavily.  I DM'ed about 90% of the time.  In all of my gaming D&D, I purchased one, single "module" (the Hill Giant one).  I was not impressed and decided my $10 was better spent on beer and weed and with that "in me" I could generally be just as imaginative myself over the weekend.    o_o

Looking back at my college gaming...  I do not regret that choice (made repeatably) at all!   ;D

These days, I just have a double vodka and tonic, but it still works out the same way.

Congrats in using your alcoholism to further gaming!   :D

I agree- Narative gaming is outstanding; and Strange Aeons with a DM could be uncanny. But not all of us have this option. An "adventure booklet" might fit the needs of the gaming public. Might be a waste of my time too- club play is typically rather anti thematic.  :(

A couple more thoughts, mechanically.  The lurker will need to keep her choices hidden and reveal them as the agents make their choices.  Chits with the choice number on one side, then the letter that corresponds on the other.

Which brings up making a list for each choice point.  For certain situations this my be a bit generic.  It does not matter if the lair is a mansion, a cave, or a deserted church.  It comes down to:
A)  Ambush
B)  Ritual
C)  Make a Last Stand
D)  Run away

Some may not be mutually exclusive, as you pointed out in your example.

I think he idea of the example was to show simple options that lead to complex Narative resolutions that could have consequences.

The idea would be to reward investigation and cunning planning and punish risk taking (while offering a reward for situations that anticipate action)

Fair enough.  Do you see decisions driving to a resolution without using a "combat" scenario?

It seems like depending on the situation and decisions, you can go directly to the "post game" section (if decisions yielded major injuries), or you can go to a "conflict resolution" scenario.

And I think linking the "story" to the scenario intros in the sceond ed book could be a place to start with the content. As you point out, a situation could be resolved without combat, depending on choices made

Moulder and Scully generally get into some kind of confrontation nearly every episode of XFiles... I would expect the purpose is to play games of strange Aeons.
Title: Re: Mr West's Pictures (Updated 10 Dec; Finished Agents)
Post by: rcketscientst on December 15, 2015, 05:56:02 PM
Agreed, the purpose is to play games of Strange Aeons.

So, how would scenarios be chosen?  Random roll, per the rules, then drives an applicable narrative.  Or go with a story line and let the decisions/choices drive which scenario (and potentially the variant) gets played out.

Not having a copy of the strange/eclectic/weird tales magazine (mentioned in the other thread), I am just trying to get a sense.

The best kinda complement from the greatest guy around!

Edit/Update- Just played a game with the Mummy: he is a pretty effective sub commander/ model with simple and thematic rules- I suggest having one in a collection; he was allowing some pretty good flexibility without being too overpowered.

Mummy, Two Zombies; Cult Leader and Byankhee = TPK

Well... I've got like 3 more models to paint before I am done- and I am not too excited about them.

The next objective will be painting the terrain- but I thought I would throw this back into the faces of this forum. I'm trying to judge what will get me the most mileage-

The terrain set I am using is woods, a set of gravestones and a garden of morr. I also have a little old farmhouse too. The graveyard will be a pretty good post when I get it going.

I was kinda hoping for some thoughts. I am really looking for a "King in Yellow" miniature that is passable (not the Rafm model...)

I 'really' love the entire "King In Yellow" plot point and it will be the focus of one of the final games at our con this year.

But, IMHO, the character/figure itself could vary wildly :o   I am entirely unfamiliar with the background where Uncle Mike got this from (or if he *really is* just that ill...), so I had no idea what era this "play" was set in, so who can say what "The King In Yellow" looks like other than I assume he is wearing yellow as well as a crown of some sort...   :D

I took mine from an old horror clix figure with minimal wash/paint.  Not bad for a $1 figure and a quick wash/paint and rebase.  I grew to like it more and more as it took shape from the batch of clix I got.

GG's King In Yellow (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=23422)

----------

As for terrain...  I would jump on the graveyard or farmhouse.  Both will yield many good options for fights/investigations.

I've been using generic hobby shop terrain until now, but in a month or two I intend to have some Fuc%ing sick stuff to show. I'm big on mini presentation and intend to bring a "new" kind of product to this web-page.

A big part of this was to make a transportable game mat and rig for photographs.

Some Previews of what I intend to produce from past gaming.

It's as close as I could get to the "Floating" look I was hoping for.

I needed "events" for the centers of scenes of terror that were plausable. - I may have an idea for making the gates look more sinister- I'm thinking about making a "Witchfire" ring the size of a CD...

But- Any better ideas?

Ok- first experment to create a witch fire ring failed horribly- I'm back to the drawing board for now... My first attempt was to use hot glue, the effect was unimpressive.

1.) I finished with my mock setup today- got some great test imagery finished- Would people prefer that I make a new set of posts for Battle Reports or continue in this thread? I have some graphics and campaign mode explanation that should blow some minds.

2.) I will be working on terrain next- Graveyard and Haunted Woods settings

On the topic of "Speed":

I try to paint 3 miniatures a week, or a group of 5 infantry.... Haven't quite been up to speed, I'm closer to 2/week. I'm thankful when things get in the way because it means I have a life...

With Warhammer Fantasy dead, 40K and Warmachine being over run by win at all cost kinda folk, I've thrown my remaining energy into X-Wing and Strange Aeons... But I feel like X-Wing is slowly being over run as well...

On the topic of "quality":

When I couldn't afford GW miniatures a few years ago... It meant I could not afford "the worlds finest miniatures"... And I became ok with that when I realized I was not the worlds finest painter- I focus on 1 color block, 1-2 hi-lights and find when they are on a board together it looks fine- my painting stile becomes like a colorist for a comic book- a distinct stile and type- and it goes great with itself.

On Replies/This Thread-

Used to frequent Warhammer-Empire..: but again the warhammer thing.

Long ago I bought some yithian models- and although delighted once I began doing research on their appearances and trying to play with them- well, they were rather unimpressive to me... The models were so large they really had a hard time blending with the theme-

I decided to play some X-Com to revisit some of my conceptual base for selecting this miniature game. I had some thoughts about how the little greys forced themselves to evolve- and when I saw these reaper minis I decided to give them a try as an alternative.

I'm experimenting with wings out of hot glue ATM- or giving them small backpacks. They do look like Aliens- and their weapons look suited to dicection of specimens.

Looking back- I guess the Yithians were not so bad. The were fun to shoot at, I'll give them that.

If Mike came out with some MiGo I could get behind I would feel a little better about it- or if I could figure out how to work this into a delta green setting...

One strongpoint of Strange Aeons has been theme-

Want to do X-Com 1920 Lovecraft Stile? There is a UFO scenerio!
Want some Zombie Day of the Dead? There is a Zombie Scenerio!
Really love Dunwich Horror or Innsmouth? Monster of the week!
Want to get your True Detectives mojo on? Blam, roll some dice!

By having a varied set of monsters I have been able to explore a wide range of themes and gameplay. I've been really lucky to find this game.

I've been missing the traditional Alien angle from my games- I got to figure out how to make this theme stronger.

Perhaps instead of some bargin bin Bones I should be looking at some Mantic Mars Attacks Stuff?

Hey!  More nice stuff!

It just dawned on me, one of the 'effects' I really like from your table pics (that did not registar until now) is the game "mat" or whatever it is you setup on.

Is that a "mat", it appears quite thin?  Did you make that?

I like that alot more than my clearance cloth I got at the fabric store.   ::)  I may need to upgrade.

Zuzzy Mat

http://www.zuzzy.com/?m=1

I keep it rolled- have noticed no chipping or loss of paint, it's amazing.

Getting the larger pieces can take a while, but they turn their miss-casts into smaller chunks. This 2x2 took only a week to come in. I love it, and it's affordable when compared to a printed vinyl image.

The bases are painted with matching paint, so at nearly any distance the stuff disappears. It makes a really nice art peice.

Next terrain after the farmhouse will be a church and hospital- that should make for a really complete terrain collection...

Then perhaps some overturned trees and logs, a few standing stones-

A nice themed case to carry everything in, re-work some of my warhammer terrain... Then call it quits. Put this guy on the shelf next to X-Wing and just play it until it falls apart!

Next project after this will either be pimping out and painting space hulk or finialy painting and modeling up a Frostgrave table and proper warband!

After beginning to use he X-Wing GF9 roll up maps, I have really begun to love mats over hard play surfaces. Has anyone else developed an opinion or thoughts on the matter?

I just got to figure out how to paint em- not too many color photos of these guys... Wearing too much black might be a shame for some of these minis (they are fun)

Dark blues, purples, reds or greens. Something to make the pallid flesh pop.
Use, or reverse, the colours you used for your cultists on a couple of them.

Just finished first coat of purple on black... :-[

Had some time to think- These guys are not too bad...

I needed a model for a ghoul king- they could count as ghouls easily. Night Stalker. Terrible Old Men, Cult Leaders, Exc...

I could easily see another statline in the future for 10pt Vampires- as vampires in how they appear in lore would often be several in number and likely ugly pale corpses.

Let us not forget that Lovecraft is grounded in New England Folklore- like poor ol Mercy Brown.

http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/the-great-new-england-vampire-panic-36482878/

It is still remarkably common in New England to hear stories. I live on cape cod; only last year they accidently exhumed a grave of a "Vampire" while working on a new building near Plymouth. The head removed was placed on the chest, arms crossed and the remains of a railroad spike in the torso.

Such events were not too far removed from Lovecrafts time.

Very nice. Like the purple on the hands n wings, tentacles look good too.
It's a weird mini to paint.
I found you can get some great results very quickly just by dry brushing or you can spend ages with glazes, washes etc. I went for a bit of both when painting mine.

Yea- the elder sign was kinda easy to paint- I may try somthing with that later.

I'm nearing the "end" of this project- I have two big buildings and some do-dads to add. (Stumps, rocks wells and a car or two perhaps... I can't believe what I have accomplished.)

The last peice of this puzzle will be a storage solution and presentation method to bring it togther.

And I have some Hastur to peice togther...

But the end is in sight... It's somehow depressing...

Don't be depressed Wally.  You have produced so wonderful stuff and have a fine collection to show for it.  Don't be a weepy Alexander; You have all sorts of worlds left to explore/ conquer :) .  What were you thinking of for Sci Fi?  I'm leaning toward Infinity because they have a huge range of figs that would make fine investigators.  I liked the look of the cult tv and thought they were very characterful but the number of figures seems too small.

Great Question- I already got these EM4 miniatures for a retro scifi project.

I intend to paint these 4 investigators as a household or explorers personal routine. I already have the 2x2 play area and terrain from mantic, but it needs to be painted up. The next question is what do I do for baddies? (mutants?)

I also feel like they need a small shuttle that is personalized for their use, like the star bug in Red Dwarf. But that's a light project.

(http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x335/WallyTWest/image_zps7of2zu8f.jpeg) (http://s1176.photobucket.com/user/WallyTWest/media/image_zps7of2zu8f.jpeg.html)

The greatest hobby gamers on the internets are the ones whom use their passion as a medium to tell a story, narrative or quality gaming experience. (Ex. Padre's Story Campaigns from Warhammer-Empire for example- some of the greatest gaming content online.). I could paint COC miniatures until the end of time, but if I can't find a use for them or a way to share my enjoyment of the genre then there was no point in me painting any of it.

The next step will be documenting gaming experiences and likely some light diorama work. Sharing and showing how to use strange Aeons to entertain and enjoy.

Deadzone, X-Wing, Strange Aeons, Frostgrave and Uncharted Seas have really shown me how much I care for these "micro" hobby games. Low model counts, high replayability and tactical easy to get into. They have become a linchpin in my gaming.

The stories that run through my head are all that ever comes out of it for me unfortunately.  The game stores dies years ago when GW came around so other than that and the comic shop that runs war machine or other GW stuff I think it's a wrap locally.  I've never been much of an army painter (my attention span dies at skirmish) and "competitive" gaming has never turned my crank.  I do a little painting and make some stuff, invent some stories and that's pretty much it.  I'd like to try and encourage some people to try other things locally but the physical act of rolling dice over a board has never been my thing.  It's more a derivative of modelling and world building to take my toys off a shelf but that rationale has always been a bit of a dead end because either of the former activities is what I prefer.  Sadly I don't have games to document.

Your EM4 guys definitely strike a chord for me as the Cult TV ones did.  I liked the nostalgic feel of the models because they made me think of the 70's style space shows and movies (minus the operas) that pushed the isolation of space travel.  More recently the Expanse and Altered Carbon had me rexamining sci-fi and appreciating it more than I had in decades.  I still enjoy the background of the 40k universe but I don't have much curiosity about the endless war part.

I recently grabbed a pdf from drivethrough rpg called, "Cthulhu Rising".  It was printed in '08 by Chaosium and seems to share the "low-high tech" aesthetic that I'd been rambling about earlier in the thread.  My world plans lay somewhere between digesting this source and mashing it together with the what I've been reading recently.  I ended up bringing this thread back from the dead because I had been reading the Expanse.

I definitely want to build some terrain ( I suppose I should call it diorama too if I'm making it :) ).  I'd like to build the modular innards of a ship with circular corridors and a mysteriously empty colony settlement or an alien landscape.

Spaceship Interior
I'm very lucky- I have lots of space hulk- including the much more mundane and generic 2nd edition condors.  :) there are a number of tile systems out there, I honestly don't know if I would do more than that.

Source Material
Yea- I'm thinking Dune 1984, Thing, Blakes 7 with a touch of classic 85-87 battletech artistically and in spirit- they hard edge distopian really hit its stride in the mid 1980's, and would not produce similar material again in my opinion (with obvious exceptions) until ben bova became mad with power around 1998. ;)

Cthulhu Rising
2271- it's an intresting product. It was fan made if I recall correctly. They produced some adventure material based around that setting and a hastur module. Honestly, exploration is such a pivotal part of the strange fiction narrative that science fiction does it great Justice. I seem to recal another scifi product produced by Chaosium, can't find it.

I can't recomend the mantic stuff enough- I'll start a new thread as I begin to work on my deadzone- but the terrain and battle mat are magnificent.

Possible major breakthrough in gaming today- I have been playing around with investigation scenerios for a while- ie- how they might be accomplished or a accommodated in miniature gaming format- finialy opened this after work today, bought it at Pax East. Major possible gaming content here and even though I find the game fell slightly below expectations I can't recommend the contents enough. There is somthing here we could all use/ missing peice of a puzzle with reguards to miniature gaming.

I'm really interested to hear more about this investigation system you pictured above.  I had roughguided some ideas when I was trying to design a clue/lead system for an inquisitor/40k style game but got distracted before I had thought about it much.  The only system I encountered in a published game was in the recent Osprey Black Ops title.  They had an intel system that progressively built or was reduced depending on mission outcomes.  It only amounted to a modifier on a d6 roll that would end the story campaign with a showdown at a volcano lair.  It was simple but pretty neat.  I tucked it away as food for thought for something more detailed.

Those cards remind me of an online project for a CoC card game.  It was a DIY program that provided assets to make custom game cards.  It seemed perfectly themed and I've had it sitting on my hard drive forever but I'm a bit of a luddite and lack patience with software.  Have a look.  It's customizable and could probably be adapted to a mini game or game within game.

I'm thinking campaign play, or perhaps using it as a "solution" in a un-winnable scenerio or alternative victory condition.

The question is how to balance and interact with the components. Reaching an objective allows you to turn one over perhaps? Killing a monster perhaps? There might be a list of conditions-

Looking at the elder things regenerate ability as a campaign/scenerio mechanism.

I like idea of things/clues you might find being undetermined/unknown until you flip them.  Sometimes you are best off not mucking about with strange things and might end up with more than you bargained for.  If there were a card system that might introduce "clues" that could be accumulated across adventures but additional cards thrown in the mix that might introduce new conditions or narrative elements.

Although I don't get much time for gaming prep and AAR write-ups anymore due to my lack of concentration since my health issue last year.  I do enjoy reading AARs about other gamer's games and campaigns. So, YES, I would be interested.

“This is the thing that troubles me, for I cannot forget Carcosa where black stars hang in the heavens; where the shadows of men's thoughts lengthen in the afternoon, when the twin suns sink into the lake of Hali; and my mind will bear for ever the memory of the Pallid Mask. I pray God will curse the writer, as the writer has cursed the world with its beautiful stupendous creation, terrible in its simplicity, irresistible in its truth--a world which now trembles before the King In Yellow.”

“I saw the lake of Hali, thin and blank, without a ripple or wind to stir it, and I saw the towers of Carcosa behind the moon. Aldebaran, the Hyades, Alar, Hastur, glided through the cloud-rifts which fluttered and flapped as they passed like the scolloped tatters of the King in Yellow.”

“Song of my soul, my voice is dead,
Die though, unsung, as tears unshed
Shall dry and die in
Lost Carcosa ”

Very cool additions to your project.  The backdrop looks amazing, and the editing of the photos sets the atmosphere.  Some great looking models in Carcosa!

Thank you horrid person.... (fun to say.)

I'm warming up for possibly trying to do a well documented campaign on here. I needed a otherworldly protagonist to bring the pitch home. I'm hoping the king in yellow does it...
