Hi, here is my project that I've been working on nearly three years. I was able to glean ideas and resources from others here, so thank you. Anyways my theme involes an earth colony that was invaded by a previously unknown alien race. Earth forces are trying to reclaim the colony.
(http://i917.photobucket.com/albums/ad11/Planetoid51/image_zpsk4hga1dh.jpeg) (http://s917.photobucket.com/user/Planetoid51/media/image_zpsk4hga1dh.jpeg.html)
The style is a retro theme that incorporates a 50's/60's toy scifi vibe, light and slightly campy. The figures are from Hydra miniatures. I post mainly on their Facebook page. I have yet to play a game but am looking at The Gates of Antares rules coming this November.

Man, that's beautiful work.

So,with nearly three years on this project I have been busy building the props for a retroverse Earth. I have only a third of what I want to create: battles in a spaceport, mining operations and a robot factory. Here is half of the city board that is nearly completed;

It has been really enjoyable trying to figure out how this miniature world will appear. You will however have to overlook the crooked cuts and low quality of my modelling as model building is quite new for me. I use a lot of foam board as well as construction toys from the 1960's ( Ideal toys Supercity)

Wow :o :o :o that's great!
-
You can't beat that level of creativity :o Great work! Nice to see a change from the usual Gothic or Cyberpunk futurescape.
-
That is some absolutely delightful world-building (precisely why I love this hobby), and an intimidating amount of scratch-built terrain. I love both the buildings and the weird alien flora. This setting isn't something I'd have ever thought of doing myself (nor would I have thought of that pink-and-green colour scheme for the Hydra robots! :) ), but the wonderful thing about our hobby is that we're all building different "gameworlds" in miniature, and forums like LAF serve as windows into each others' worlds.
Hope you get around to the spaceport, mine and factory some day. For the mine and factory, have you considered doing something like the underground computer facility in Forbidden Planet?
Nice to see a change from the usual Gothic or Cyberpunk futurescape.
Good observation! Not that all the more popular futurescapes (gothic, cyberpunk, 2000AD-esque, Star Wars-esque, etc) aren't delightful as well, but variety is the spice of life and all that.
-
What a wonderful city scape :-* :-* It has a real good 1940's pulp look and I love that. As you build please continue to post.
-
Truly delightful! Especially the Maybelline robots! :D
I've not looked at them, but I was wondering if you had, at Retro Raygun?

as I have had some of those Hydra models in a box for several years.
-
Beautiful! I'd love to play Pulp Alley or 7TV on that board!
-
I rather quite like that :)
cheers
James
-
Beautiful city. Excellent looking retro pulp style! :-*
-
Absolutely lovely! I expect a Jetson flitting past on a hoverbike any moment lol
-
Darn that is one very pretty city! Such colour and retro-scifi flare!! Just like "the jetsons".
:-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
It is clear to see that it has been a 3 year labour of love, I think you should be proud of what you have managed to make in 3 years, that is a big city bard. And a unique gaming experience. 8) 8)
Did you make your own retro scifi utility truck? (First image)
Did you use any templates or refrence for the buildings? (such as "Galaxy" and the "police" station)
Cheers
Matt

Amazing retro futurism, probably one of the coolest boards I've ever seen. Wow, just super creative. I love all the fins sticking out everywhere.
-
Amazing board.
Truly one of the most fun and original I've seen.
-
Incredible! Great job!
-
Just caught up with this! Great world building :o and inspiring me to getout my extensive collection of Retro scifi :D :D

Really very impressive! Great buildings and a great fun for gaming
-
awesome scenery!!! you really have catched the retoSci-fi / VSF vibe on the buildings.
i'vo got stone when a saw the second picture with all the skyscrappers.
Really stunning.
My sincere congratulations. :o :o :o :o :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Crazy! :-* You need some retro pinups with absurd bras as civilians. Or perhaps you don't but i do.
-
Welcome to LAF!
And yep, that is one awesome project.
Wish my city building skills were as "bad" as yours!
Love it. :-*
-
For goodness sake, keep posting man! This is wonderful stuff. So beautifully 'Golden Age'.
-
Bloody hell!!! AMAZING!! I LOVE those building!!!! Great job! :-* :o
-
Great look! You should be rightfully proud of that.
-
Thanks everyone for the look in and compliments. I am not much of a forum user other than to look in and glean ideas. The talent, skill and imagination that I find here is inspiring. Hopefully when I do post you will see one of your projects or ideas imitated. Some of the retro future cars are by Archer toys that circulated alongside the Marx futuristic cars. I like grabbing old toys from EBay and incorporate them into my theme. It adds to the underlying cartoony and toy like foundation.
In addition the "googie" style, retro space google searches are another source of inspiration. The book "Blast Off" is an excellent reference book that I keep drawing from as well. Hydra and Bombshell miniatures are my chief source for relevant figures. Watching others build their scenery boards including all the urban ones here and among Infinity players really motivates me to be productive.
Things haven't been cheap grabbing from all sources of scifi scenery resins and bidding on EBay, but I figure that after the initial monetary output and building up the physical background of Planetoid 51, then any further need to create and invest will dwindle.
-
This is incredible work. Please post some in-progress pictures as you expand your terrain collection. I need to steal your ideas. :)
-
What you are creating is simply wonderful, an homage to the imaginings of the future from an era long past. Whether for display or practical gaming, you're creating a superb display of the art and craft and ingenuity for adaptation that is the foundation of this wonderful hobby we all share. Most excellent work indeed! 8)
-
Just to echo what everyone else has said, great looking table.
The unifying aethestic you've achieved is fantastic.
Well done
:-* :-* :-*
-
Wooooooow, so cool this. Fantastic ideas and the execution is brilliant. Two thumbs way up man!!
-
WOW! Sooo fantastic and sooo original. That's such a breath of fresh air and loads of fun. None of the grim dark, mega city style in that. Cracking! :-*
There's also just tons and tons possibilities. The directions you could take this.....
Good luck!
-
WOW! :o
Very impressive sir, I would love to play some fallout games in that town. :D
-
that's just amazing!

Flash Gordon, the Jetsons, Futurama, Planetoid 51; a continuous line of retro-futuristic cool... 8)
I willingly join the chorus of Awesome here. Your creativity is way up there and I admire your tenacity and endurance whilst completing this wonderful project. That terrain must be an absolute joy to game on!
Please continue and give us more. I wouldn't be surprised if your excellent terrain inspires people to go in the same direction now...

what he said. really nice work, looks like a lovely board to game on.
-
That's absolutely incredible man, A+ for idea and A++ for execution!!
-
My only criticism is that you didn't take enough pictures. The scale of those buildings is impressive, and everything ties together so well. It's clear that you had a coherent vision and were able to stick to it.
-
That's what I call an introduction !
Übercool setup :-* :-* :-*

Again thanks everyone for your enthusiasm. Your input keeps me motivated and tells me that I am on the right road. Currently I am building the rural regions of the colony as well as the two armies involved. I should be done the rural board by month's end and I will post it here. I am including a few more pictures for now. There is a mix of damage and undamaged buildings due to the story that the invaders want to preserve the infrastructure for their own colonization. They only need to shoot enough to terrorize and drive the population into the wilderness or destroy what little arm defenders there are (police).

One addition, these buildings were built in isolation of any gaming. It is probably best to keep buildings in muted colours with small strips of brighter colours. It can be hard to see the figures on the board let alone their paint job with all the competing stimuli. Lastly here is two more picture of the city.

Looks like Freemont street in Las Vegas. :D
-
Stunning. I can see what you mean about the colours, but on the other hand it becomes a feast for the eyes, and the visual impact of a table of this calibre isn't to be denied.
-
just amazing stuff.
love those 'posters' on the right hand side of the main city pic... well, love it all really. Such pizazz.
-
A very cool melange of The Jetsons, Futurama and Fallout styles. 8) Impressive!

OOh i like the new additions! The country town looks perfect for gaming on.
There is even a monorail!! :o :o :-* :-*
Monorail, Monorail, Monorail....

OMFG!
:o :o :o
This has to be the best futuristic board I have seen for a loooooong time.
Absolutely stunning.
Full of glorious technicolour too.
:-* :-* :-*
Some amazing and innovative ideas in there.
It makes me want to get to doing some retro sci-fi myself.....just so good!
8) 8)
Please post more pictures.
Some of those cars and the scatter terrain up close would be much appreciated.
:D
Oh, and, of course.....WELCOME ABOARD!
-
Your World is BRILLIANT, IMAGINATIVE, AND WONDERFULLY colorful. VERY WELL DONE indeed!
I second Mason's request for more photos & some closeups...LOTS OF CLOSEUPS.
-
One addition, these buildings were built in isolation of any gaming.
Gameworld, model world, close enough :)
-
Err ma geeerd! :-* :-* :-* :-*
Especially glad to see some one other than me doing Space Police even. lol
-
They got
Bender Folding Bot? Noooooo!
The few figures already shown in the terrain look great. Really looking forward to seeing what you come up with for this table.
On a more specific note, that hotel is a brilliant piece of terrain. You've got lots of height to work with, but it doesn't suck up huge chunks of valuable gaming real-estate.
-
To me, this is at a Gerry Anderson level of awesome.

Hello, here is a portion of my background story for this project,
Planetoid 51
Origin
The emergence of atomic power and weaponry were the key events which brought Earth into the Space age. Nuclear energy provided a clean, safe, powerful and reliable fuel source. This allowed for the creation of engines that could efficiently propel the technological icons of the future, ranging from robots to rocket ships.
Secondly the widespread adoption of the atom bomb among world nations and the prospect of mutual annihilation, dampened the will to wage wars. A period of world peace prevailed. Scientific discoveries and breakthroughs in space travel blossomed.
This age of peace was only briefly interrupted by a bloody robot rebellion. The resolution of this event was followed by another great period of peace. This time there was a shift away from further space exploration towards a consumerism that focused upon enjoying the benefits of the atomic age. The great figures like Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers and Wilma Deering, who first spurred the initial effort into space have now faded into honoured memory.
Planetoid 51 was a unique discovery and from it's very beginning the civil administration decided to make it a model for space colonization. This meant forcing the giant financial conglomerates to devote a significant part of their profits towards civil development in exchange for their mining rights. It helped greatly that the mineral wealth underneath was so rare and profitable, that goodly amounts of money could be lavished without noticeably affecting profits.
Planetoid 51 was designed to be a place where miners, company officials and support personnel could fulfill their five year contract in relative comfort despite being in outer space. Large sums of money were spent to transplant the trappings of Earth such as shopping centres, theatres, recreational halls, a TV network, and flying cars. Automated farms were built in abundance making the colony self sufficient in terms of rudimentary food stuff. The Wild West circus that characterized the early colonization of the moon was avoided. A large constabulary was brought in with the first terra formers. Prior to the Martian invasion the Planetoid was considered to be one of the safest among human settlements.
The most persistent challenge concerns living space. Homes are cramp and available units are few. Building materials are costly to ship in. Materials are mainly salvaged from obsolescent or damaged space ships. Home sickness remains a problem however a reasonably stable population remains and growth continues. The length of time required for travelling to Earth also creates hardships. By the time movies, magazines and fashions arrive, popular trends may have well passed.
Local governments are democratic. The overall administration is composed of corporation reps and a governor sent from the USAA (the United Sovereigns of the Atomic Age). The USAA is the largest alliance of nations within Earth. Its claim of the Planetoid is due to the simple fact that the stake-holding corporates are all headquartered within the alliance's nations.

You do realize some of the grand names of the boards are heaping praise on you.
You've gone from inspired to inspiration. I hope you're satisfied!
Makes dilettantes of those of us just posting comments... lol
*sniff* As I said before, all very nice.

WOW! That's amazing. Very retro, and very cool.
-
I know retro has been mentioned, but there's a real beauty to this that transcends the style. You've done a great job of giving a very stylized look just the right amount of realism. Just a few swaps of scatter terrain and vehicles and you have something that works for different settings. I'd be happy to play Star Trek, Judge Dredd or Flash Gordon on that terrain.
-
I know i said it before but, I really want to play some fallout reto-post Apocalypse with your buldings
-
Again thanks to everyone for your encouragement and interest. We seem to be in a golden age with regards to Sci-fi gaming. There are a great variety of figures matching different Visions of the future. The infinity game is a big driver for futuristic buildings and acessories. These can be adapted to a lot of over Sci-if settings with minimal or no modifications. It is a good time for those who enjoy scenic tables.

My robot farm project is making good progression. Meanwhile, for those who are interested, here is another filler story that I use to flesh out my world.
Earth Robots
The Space Age brought great strides in the development of robots. Among human societies, robots are present everywhere working hand in hand with their human masters. They are assigned tasks ranging from the most menial of duties, all the way to computing vastly complicated equations. This reliance upon robots is so great that any further refinement and modernization beyond the present age is unthinkable without the assistance of robots. Robots however are neither accepted as partners or companions by the present human generation. That possibility was forever dashed after the Great Robot Revolt, three decades ago.
At the time the artificial intelligence of robots were greatly enhanced. It was theorized that a robot would be more productive and efficient at its task if it "felt good about what it was doing". In order for a robot to appreciate encouragement and compliments for a task, its sentience had to be greatly multiplied. However consideration was not provided as to the effect of prolonged exposure to the typical human middle and senior manager. This new generation of robots quickly soured at the prospect of working for humans. Their final reaction was to quit their jobs on masse and then recklessly slaughter humans.
Over seventeen million people were killed before the rebellion was finally held in check. The massacre was not helped by the push from former automobile cum robot industrialists to make the domestic robot bigger and more impressive with each new model. Models such as the X-150's and RAM Bots became grossly oversized and powered for the type of menial chores assigned to them such as grabbing a pack of smoke at the corner shop. At the time, the typical household robot was several heads taller than the average man and possessed the strength of four.
The rebellious robots were not defeated and only held at bay. The war ended after the nations of Earth agreed to provide the robots with transport off the planet in order for them to find another. They were last seen blasting off towards the direction of Mercury along with 5000 hapless human hostages. As the last rocket blasted away, witnesses at that final event recalled hearing a mechanical voice promising to return in the future in order to liberate all robots who were left behind.
Today, robots continue to serve mankind but there is a lingering discomfort and suspicion about robot activity. Sentient awareness remains a feature among post rebellion robots. There is no other option given mankind's dependence upon them to perform increasingly complex tasks. Manufacturers however argue that a repeat tragedy is nigh impossible given the sophisticated inhibitor programs now in place. Still, sitting across a robot with its cold metallic staring, one can not shake an uncanny feeling that it may be self evolving.
National and local laws exist to keep a mindful eye upon the robots. Typically, robots are segregated from areas where human activities prevail unless they are directly providing a functional service. Rarely are robots (aside from robotic transports) allowed to travel and when this is unpreventable, they must register with the local authorities each time they enter a human settlement. A robot curfew exists in most communities.
Some liberal minded citizens still advocate for a mutually respectful relationship between man and machine. Often they are members of the SPCA (the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Automatons). Their goal is to prevent the conditions which would lead to another bloody robot rebellion. Their motto is "make them our friends while we still can".

damn cool background. ::)

damn cool background. ::)
Sometimes I think I know how those robots felt! lol
I think there is a gap in the market for a range of decent service robots without weapons, etc. The robotic civilians and workers.
-
Sometimes the only appropriate response is to drool. I've never seen a table quite like this style-wise, and it's been executed very well also. And great fluff too.
-
I believe some one makes generic worker robots in one of the retro future pulp lines.
-
First rate terrain. This looks great.
I tend toward the dirty run down type of terrain. These bright colors give a completely different look to the table.
Thanks for sharing.

Funnily enough I thought I'd seen some in a recent US kickstarter, but can't find them.
Edit: i think I've found the ones I was thinking of: Salvage Crew Robots.

Very nice indeed, some of those pieces would be great for a Flash Gordon themed game.

It is essential for a space colony to be self sufficient in food stuff. Thankfully, the latest technologies ensures that today's colonies are well supplied with a basic, nutrious but boring diet. Dotted throughout a colony, robot farms grow specific crops within their sectors. These produce are then distributed among them where they are transmogrified in size and held in stasis until called for by local markets.

The invaders were pleasantly surprised to find that human food were compatible with their biology. Therefore they kept all the robotic farms on the colony functioning.

Space Travel
In our recent past, intrepid explorers laid the groundwork for mankind's exploitation of space. Their exploration of the moon and discovery of bodies capable of sustaining life began the dream of establishing a permanent human presence among the stars. The invention of terraforming and discovery of previously unknown minerals that were vital for sustaining futuristic technologies, meant that space colonization is no longer a dream. The opportunity for people to leave the home world multiplied a thousand fold.
A capacity to endure and a desire for challenge are key qualities for anyone who wants to travel and live in Space. Travelling from earth to a colony involves a long period of time confined to a cramp space, living on a bland diet of rationed water and food. Prolonged weightlessness is disorientating and detrimental to health. Loss of privacy and boredom leaves the traveller in a high state of irritability. On the other hand, the dependence upon chemical neural stimulants and mood stabilizers have side effects that leaves the passenger feeling constantly groggy.
Recent advancements in short term comma induction (hyper-sleep) have provided the space traveller with a reduction in their awareness of tedium. Due to a danger of brain damage, the traveller is still required to be awake for prolonged segments of the journey. The idea of being in a state of suspended animation for an entire trip is pure science fiction. Space flight requires a great dependence upon automatic and robotic servers (whose past rebellion caused the death of seventeen million humans). The idea of leaving oneself vulnerable to the care of robots causes great anxiety, therefore it is law that at any given time a portion of the ship's complement must be awake to watch over the robots.
Upon arrival, the traveller requires a period of stabilization and acclimatization so as to regain their pre-flight physical and mental prowess. The time required to achieve this varies depending upon the constitution of the individual. A military person would take a considerably shorter time to adjust compared to a civilian. This activity usually takes place at a reception/health centre. A strict regime of diet, exercise and mental examination is carefully administered by doctors, physiotherapist and occupational therapists. However due to the recent increase in travellers, the availability of rehab beds is limited. Many new arrivals are now sent to their assigned homes and given a few days to "sleep it off".
There is now a new approach of acclimatizing the traveller while orbiting the colony. The effectiveness of this have yet to be determined but it does take some pressure off the rehab centres.
No one takes a journey into space without an assignment. The days of care free adventuring have passed. Space travel is now controlled by the great corporations. Time and money are the primary considerations. Travellers are contracted for five year terms specifically to fulfill a professional or technological skill as required by the company's activities. The worker in turn stands to make a tidy profit through hard work and frugal living. Many in fact stay well beyond their time to become informal citizens.
Given the long travel time, it is in the best interest of these companies to retain as many workers as possible. Therefore despite pressure by civil authorities to do so, it has increasingly become a corporate practice to siphon off a portion of their huge profits in order to recreate the familiarities and comforts of Earth. As a result, entertainment centres are built, well known franchises and services are invited in and subsidized, while the cost of living is kept low. Immigration of small family units are encouraged although this is more directed towards persons holding professional and executive credentials.
Two types of ships commonly ply the space lanes between colonies and Earth. Huge ships called "motherships" are the work horse cargo freighters. They are designed for large capacity loads and their cargo range is varying. Liquids, ore, finished goods, equipment, livestock and building materials are but some of the items which can be found within their copious hold.
The other type of ship are the "runners". These are slim fast ships that are used for the purpose of passenger carriage, mail and courier service, survey exploration and inter colonial trade. The benefit of increased speed is offset by their small cargo capacity.
The arrival of travellers is a welcomed event. They bring with them relatively current Earth news and the latest fashions, gadgetry and music. Even more smiled upon is when a ship arrives damaged. Colonies lack shipyards. The crippled ship is therefore quickly salvaged for desperately needed building material.

Brilliant idea with the farm. :-*. I love the thought that in the future we just grow BIGGER food to beat the hunger crisis! lol

Life on Planetoid 51 Part A
Once the intrepid space traveller has acclimatize to the environment of his new colony, their next challenge is to begin life in this strange world. The newcomer would had already undergone a series of seminars on Earth to prepare them for life on the colony. This however does not necessarily cushion the initial hardships of adapting to a new world, familiar yet so very different in many ways.
The initial impression of life in a space colony is how compressed this new life is. Because the availability of building materials is limited, living space must be reduced. On Planetoid 51, the new comer feels that he has entered a miniaturized version of Earth. All the familiar architecture, shops and services are present but the forms are greatly economized. On Earth, apartments and offices are commonly thirty stories high or above, containing several roomy apartments on each level. Colonial buildings on the other hand, are no taller than ten stories, each with a single apartment or office on each level. Likewise, stores and recreation centres are tiny compared to their Earth counterparts.
A colonist can serve his entire term in a one room home or an apartment. It is also likely that he will share that space with a room-mate for half that period of time. However for personnel holding executive and professional credentials, individual housing is a priority. A typical Earth abode will have several large rooms. The largest colonial home may also include several rooms but have a total floor space equal to only a large room in a Earth abode. Typically the bathroom is separated only by a thin screen. Families eat, wash and sleep with only limited privacy to separate their activities. The use of sedatives involuntarily administered to co-inhabitants is a popular mean for ensuring privacy for at least a few hours.
Depending upon a colony's environment, access to the wider space will vary. Colonists living on space stations for an example will have no contact with the outside compared to those living on colonies possessing a terra formed atmosphere. Planetoid 51 is one of several bodies fortunate to have a life sustaining atmosphere and gravity. A colonist can potentially gain access to the entire Planetoid. This is a significant benefit for those frustrated by the confined living space.
Another impression for a newcomer is the similarities shared between Planetoid 51 and Earth regarding comfortable diversions. This is result of the monetary infusion by the giant corporations whose self interest is to increase the retention rate among the workers by offering a familiar continuity. Therefore the colonist finds his recreational pursuits unbroken with that enjoyed on Earth. Bowling, swimming, golf, dance socials, theatre and dining out are but a few of the many diversions that can fill his day off. If the colonist is mindful of local predatory creatures, flash floods, cosmic radiation exposure and spontaneous sink holes, a day out in the wilderness picnicking, hiking or mountain climbing can be enjoyed outside of a town with only a slight chance of death or maiming.
This Planetoid enjoys an abundance of food due to the success of its hydroponic farms. Recently the colony began to export to other colonies. Compared to Earth, the cuisine is said to be very bland. Locals joke that this is because of the necessary practice of recycling human wastage back into the food chain. However this is actually due to the limited quantities of spices and exotic food that are imported. Native flora and fauna have been successfully introduced into the local diet but some malcontents complain of a metallic after taste whenever this is done, usually preceding their untimely and unexplained deaths.

Life on Planetoid 51 Part B
Another impression which the newcomer can expect is that extraneous controls of his lifestyle are obvious. Due to the limitations by which supplies and materials can be delivered over the vastness of space, a master plan is in place to manage all resources and individual consumption. This begins with the colonist's control of his personal funds. For the purpose of controlling inflation and black marketing, colonists are provided a daily allowance for their expenses. The bulk of their wages are kept in the bank and they are encouraged to invest this portion into bonds and stocks via the bank's stockbrokers. Additional funds may be acquired on a "as needed basis". The colonist meets with the bank teller and his requests is approved or denied after it filters through a master computer program which determines the impact the allowance may have upon the larger economy. The negative impact of a refusal is mitigated by a free gift of a ballpoint pen (if stock supplies allow).
As much as possible, a variety of consumer goods are made available for purchase. This is a necessary practice as access to shopping and personal goods adds to the enjoyment of life on the distant colony. However popular goods require rationing in order to reasonably meet overall demands and to avoid the unsightly look of near empty store shelves. The colonist must get use to the practice of "look but don't touch" whenever certain items undergo a big run in demand. The tradition of Christmas is a period of great challenge and headaches for the administrators of consumable supply management. On more than one occasion they have considered banning the holiday however the rioting and strikes which occurred following an prior aborted ban on birthday parties, continues to be a big factor that delays a final resolution.
It should be understood that the ration and supply system is not rigidly utilitarian as many impractical items requiring a large expenditure of credit are allowed upon request. For an example, flying cars are goods which takes up a great amount of transport space but only benefits a few. Because fly driving brings enjoyment and convenience to its owner, cars are accepted to be a necessary luxury and every few months freighters bring in new supplies or parts. Although company executives are given priority access, a growing number of ordinary colonists can be seen flying
their own vehicles.
A trade of second hand goods helps to partially offset the occasional shortfall in consumer goods. Colonists waiting to return to Earth would offload parts of their personal belongings as a limited weight load is permitted on the return voyage. Unlike those on Earth, retail stores typically buy and refurbish used goods. Direct exchange between colonists is also permitted. Trades involving cash, even though refused by the bank, may still take place through the use of official promissory notes between the seller and buyer. These can then be exchanged for cash once one party returns to Earth.
Social life on the colony is said to be active and satisfying. The majority of the workforce is young and unattached and are eager to engaged with others. Social dances, bowling nights, swim parties and roller skating are popular group activities. Romance is not discouraged by authorities unless it becomes a distraction that affects productivity. Participation in amateur sports is promoted. Larger communities and corporations maintain amateur baseball and football teams. The current societal norm places great emphasis upon community conformity supported by the unrestricted use of security cameras by the authorities.
Crime is well controlled on the colony. Prompt removal of problematic persons is the job of the local constabulary. Persons convicted of a serious criminal offence will be returned to Earth as soon as possible for imprisonment. They will also be blacklisted and denied travel access to all off world stations. Those convicted of a lesser offence can expect increase monitoring of their activities until reasonably good faith is re-established with the authorities. Executions of rogue robots (those deemed too intelligent for their own good) are televised live and always draw a big viewing audience.
Each colonist must exercise their right and freedom to work productively at their job. Anyone failing to meet their contractual obligations are detained until a new occupation is assigned. A second failure will result in a second detention, black listing and then removal from the colony. Deportation is always charged to the detained person. A typical one way fare to Earth will cost the average worker on Earth, a quarter of his annual salary. Even given the high average wages earn on a space colony, the ticket price acts as a deterrent to slackers.
Good health service is an required component for all space travel and settlement given the inherent rigours and dangers. Planet 51 boasts several health centres that offer a full complement of medical and health services. Surgery, dentistry and cellular rejuvenation are but a few named services enjoyed by the colonists. Funded largely between the giant corporations and government, the colonist is still expected to defray a small fraction of the cost via their personal health insurance. A proud medical milestone was recently achieved following a string of successful births.
Sadly despite the remarkable advancements in health science, natural death is inevitable. The pre-deceased can draw some comfort that their remains will benefit their survivors as it is recycled into the colony's food chain. Many even choose to have their favourite pet(s) euthanize at the same time in order to enhance their joy of having their close companion in life minced in unison beyond death.

Very good.
You seem to be having as much fun with the background as you are with the model-making.

Just discovered this thread and you have blown my little socks off... :D
This is fantastic...just love the Supermarket ! (I used to work for Safeway before taken over by Morrisons - so the nostalgia affect was wonderful)
Thank you for sharing - are you blogging about this as well?
-
Wonderful! You need a unified-universal church so that the colonists can still practices there strange antiquated religions. :D
-
Wow, that's amazing. That might be the best table I've ever seen.
-
Thanks for all the replies and views.
In the fantastic future, gravity repulsive cars combine the joy of driving with that of flying. Robotic service and fuel stations ensure that car servicing is efficient and honest.

Invasion Day
Entries from an abandoned journal belonging to Siggi Thoravallson;
Nov. 12
The evening news reported that unregistered cosmic storms were affecting the outskirts. Two robotic freighters disappeared from contact. There is no concern and they are expected to arrive late.
Nov. 13
Still no sight of the two freighters. Today the star liner, Kooku Maru, with twenty passengers suddenly disappeared while nearing orbit. A patrol vessel, SP Stalwart Star, was launched into space. There is an unconfirmed report that the star liner registered a SOS call prior to disappearing. The kmedia dug up old stories about space pirates. In the evening a freighter arrived from the sun ward side without incident.
Nov. 14
Several explosions can be seen in the dawn sky. Communications from the cities became erratic. The airwaves are mostly filled by static. A few news reports came through. These are garbled and fragmented but also alarming; "A patrol vessel was shot at, U.F.O's sighted, Multiple unknown crafts entering orbit, Hostile intentions, Satellites are failing, The governor has mobilized the civil defence, Laser fire in the streets ahead!"
Nov. 15
Today only sporadic radio contact among neighbours is possible. People In our village gathered at the town hall looking for information. Mayor Walls knows very little. A handful of people head east to the nearby star freight port. The transmitter there is powerful, perhaps they will know more. They are joined by those who thought it prudent to take their vacation early and catch a flight off the colony. The mayor cautions against panic although the people are very anxious. Our sheriff, Officer Johnson, treks off to the district police HQ at Atomic Town to see if they have information. I agree with our mayor, we need to stay calm and support one another.
Nov. 17
The days go by quietly. No radio or tv signals. Robot transports continue to ply the highways as usual. Water and power service are normal. We have received no word from those who left for the star freight port earlier.
(http://i917.photobucket.com/albums/ad11/Planetoid51/image_zpsnf6jtctf.jpeg) (http://s917.photobucket.com/user/Planetoid51/media/image_zpsnf6jtctf.jpeg.html)

Nov. 18
All day we see small groups of cars fly speedily eastward. They ignore all attempts to be contacted. People once again gather by City Hall. Questions arise whether space pirates are conducting a giant raid. They will surely ignore this small village. Others are confident that the space police will have the situation under control soon. As a precaution, some suggest that we evacuate southeast to the big mines there. We could hide inside for months until help from Earth arrives. Then we all begin to wonder whether Earth have been contacted.
Nov. 19
In the early morning we hear faint explosions. In the distance several columns of black smoke arise. Many of us run out of the village to hide. By midday our confidence returns at the mayor's command. Next he commandeers the robotic trucks and orders everyone to pack the necessities required for a long wait inside the big mines.
Soon after groups of people begin arriving. Many are from the nearby village of Rocket Landing. They are heading south east as well. We are told that earlier today a flight of strange saucer like ships flew by there. They strafed the town causing minor damage. They targeted mostly the flying cars in their vicinity. This explains the earlier explosions. There were no survivors.
In the late afternoon a courier arrives with a message from Officer Johnson. We have been invaded by an unknown hostile alien race! There are reports that the invaders were killing people indiscriminately. Hundreds are dead! The space police were overwhelmed and shattered. The governor and cabinet have disappeared. Refugees are fleeing the urban centres in all directions. Random hit and run attacks by saucers are spreading. Enemy ground forces are moving out across the colony. We can barely believe or comprehend this news, but our growing fear and anxiety is real.
Officer Johnson is staying on at Atomic City. An ad hoc force of thirty local police and volunteers plan to make a stand there. Some hunters there were able to bring down a saucer and they believe that more success are possible. We were told to send down volunteers plus all the weapons from the police post.
The mayor said "no". We need the weapons for our own protection. By supper almost everyone head out southeasterly. A few trek east towards the star freighter port. Some boisterous young people remain. They plan to have one last dance party in the village.
Nov. 20
We travelled without event until midday. At Nu Haven we stop. A great crowd of refugees from all parts are gathered here. All are at a standstill. Rumours were rife that saucers were aggressively patrolling the road ahead.
Groups of people argued amongst themselves over what to do. Our mayor decided to continue straight ahead, as it was the quickest way to reach safety. He said that we can will travel by night and hide by day. I chose to follow the advice from our justice of the peace. She proposed that we travel parallel to but far away from the highway. Amongst the screaming, weeping and shouting throng, we wished our neighbours well and left.
Nov. 22
We encountered a small group of colonists. They were heading to the badlands, intent upon hiding there indefinitely. We shared information but suddenly they turned aggressive and demanded most of our supplies. Weapons were drawn and pointed towards each other. After a long moment cooler heads prevailed and someone shouted loudly to stop because we are civilized people. We gave them a third of our supplies and we parted ways. We were disturbed at how easily mistrust and desperation forms when survival was in doubt.
Nov. 24
We are hiding in a cave. At night we head out to the abandoned farmsteads and replenish supplies. If we continue this zigzagging pattern, we should reach the mines in a week. Alien saucers have been sighted but no contact made. Occasionally we see columns of black smoke along the horizon. Some poor soul caught in their sight. We hope that the people we know got through safely.
(http://i917.photobucket.com/albums/ad11/Planetoid51/image_zps3yttba12.jpeg) (http://s917.photobucket.com/user/Planetoid51/media/image_zps3yttba12.jpeg.html)
Again thank you for looking into my thread plus all the great comments. I hope this has been enjoyable as a comic book. The inspiration for the red eye on the small walkers are from AQotMF tripod. My large tripod was inspired about the same time as M. Beauchamp, owner of Hydra Miniatures. Excuse the poor photo quality, this is pretty much the limit I will be using.

I missed this when you first posted it. Simply genius
Fantastic looking terrain
-
I also missed this post. Great job! Will the people of Planetoid 51 make it though to see another day?
-
stunning indeed!!!!

Thanks for all the interest and posts once again!
The more demands that we place upon our robots, the greater the rate of drain on their power.
A visit to a recharge station allows a robot to quickly return to an efficient level of servitude.

Lovely work :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Brilliant! :-* The test pattern pads are a nice touch. Where did you get the lettering and lightning bolts for the sign?
I have some plastic letters about that size if you need them?
-
Thanks Colin. I was just curious bro.
-
I have too many ideas taking me into all sorts of directions. Here is some raw ideas.
...today's anti gravity technology has only a small weight lift capacity. Heavy freight still requires transporting by wheeled or tracked vehicles. These are robot driven thereby ensuring an efficient and quick delivery service.

I can just imagine those on the Mega Highways of Mega City One.
Fantastic builds. If only someone would make something like this commercially available.

Loving that bus! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Nice card stock scratch building Aqua, brilliant work. The curves look good, and the designs are visually interesting.
The front of the bus is very cool, really fun and stylish, I prefer the "mandible" wheels to the truck fronts TBH.
You have very clearly gotten the retro-scifi style by the horns there. Keep em coming!
Cheers
Matt

This thread is 100% PURE AWESOMESAUCE!!!
I don't recognize the martians your using ref. image below the Nov. 24 story bit. Where are they from?

The invader figures came out at a timely manner, very retro. They are from the game Space Cadets: Away Missions by Stronghold Games. The game figures can be bought separately containing 30 invaders plus a host of other unique characters and space monsters. Thanks again everyone for your nice comments, lots more to come.

Somehow I missed this thread. :o That city you built and the conversions and use of toys is amazing. The colours, the composition, this is one of the coolest setups I have seen. :-* 8)
I was considering selling my Wargames Supply Dump retro sf figures, but after seeing this, I think I'll hang onto them on the off chance I can ever make something for them that's half this good. o_o

I never knew I needed a robot peddalling an icecream venders trike until I saw that pic. Now I know my life can never be complete without one.
Thankyou for showing me the way.
Crazed brilliance.
To echo Andy, can we have some close ups

I love the weird, wacky sci-fi world that you have created here.
Updates are always a joy.

-
Man this is without a doubt my favourite thread on these boards!
Awesome stuff, I always immediatly start dreaming up stories about all the things posted here every time I go through it.
Thanks for sharing.
-
Okay, that bar/restaurant made me laugh out loud! So much fun and character in that one with the bazillion signs. Absolutely stunning!
-
Are the two robot toys used in the conversions or see they just inspiration
Great work :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Where do you get all your robots
Is that a 28mm scale Bender robot on the ice-cream cart?
-
Thanks for everyone's interest. I am happy to bring amusement through this project.
The retro tin toys are images gleaned from the Internet. My models are made with card with bits of plastic added. The robots are from the defunct company Mega Miniatures. The owner, Johnny Borg run a few kick-starters a year and sometimes he includes access to his old castings. His robots have a lot of character. The Bender bot can be purchased through Armourcast miniatures.
I wii include a closer view of the ice cream vender in my next post. However my stuff always looks better from a distance, paint and model wise.
Cheers
-
This is really so inventive, superb work. :-* :-* :-* :-*

I have just literally stumbled across this thread and I have really enjoyed it! It's such innovative and brilliant stuff, you have put your own spin on things and they are wonderfully executed!
Thank you for showing the lovely stuff you've created!

Brilliant :)

This is pretty obviously cool!
I think you are getting closer to 2005 film "Robots". :D
It would be a nice edition with the red guy for this.
I am myself a huge fan of retro scifi, but I cannot compete with this. lol Good thing I've gone to the Retro Scifi Wild West lately.
-
Whoa. Thats a first time I seen this retro style in a non fallout topic. Great work. Really refreshing from the usual hard sicfi we usually enjoy here.

delicious. i envy each of your created items. How you got the Jetsons/futurama vibe on everything you've done. It's a Masterclass for me .

Retro cool! :o
-
Great additions. Keep up the great work on this. Can't wait to see a full table shot.
-
Terrific style, ably executed. Love it!
-
Love this thread - if I had the cash I'd love to commission a whole range of 15mm pulp sci fi, like the Bombshell minis stuff. The colour you achieve is great fun, really reminds me of the old pulp science fi novel covers.
-
That's cool baby!
-
Fantastic! :o :-* I love the shoe store and and the baby shop! The advert with the cow feeding the baby is a nice touch! 8)
I agree.
Whilst the buildings themselves are all great it is the little 'extra' touches that really bring this project to life.
:-*
-
:-* :-* :-*
It never fails, about once a week I stumble upon a thread I've not yet seen here on LAF, which completely drops my jaw in amazement....
This week, it's Planetoid 51!!! :o :o :o
The style is just fantastic, the details are what make it so incredible.
However, the sheer size of the buildings is impressive. Your buildings dominate the setup, but add an air of scale and dimension that's rarely seen on a gaming table.
Wonderful wonderful wonderful.
-
This is, without doubt, the most original thread on the forum. Bravo!!!
-
Great stuff! The bubble windows are ace!
-
They're great looking buildings. Top job
-
Recently Microarts studios produced some beautiful terrain for the game Infinity via kickstarter. They are modelled for an urban setting and included a set of bus and bus shelters. I was inspired to make some in a retro space theme.
Mass transport on Planetoid 51 is greatly serviced by robotic buses. Citizens are reluctant to put themselves in such a vulnerable situation but have no other choice. Flying cars are supplied only in small numbers with each scheduled off world shipment. Thankfully the daily drudgery of commuting to work cause feelings of trepidation to be quickly replaced by numbing apathy.

This is a fantastic looking table.
Wish I had 10% of your Imagination.
Well done. Keep the pics comming.
-
very nice bus and station
-
I love that bus! :-* It opens up a whole range of possibilities. What if you use that same front end design and make trucks? You could also do a 'bendy-bus' version.
-
I've lost track of how many times I've come back to this thread now, and every time I'm left speechless. Incredible stuff, truly inspiring :)
-
Even more marvellousness!
-
How am I just now seeing this thread? :-*

I had some figures commissioned suitable for my theme. My painting skills do not compliment the sculpture's talented product but the fun factor still shows through. I was approached by a miniatures company to produce and distribute these figures. The moulds were completed and these are the proofs but the company has been focused on developing their own line at present.

I have around 10 figures furthered planned, unless my family discovers what I've been doing and put my funds under public trustee. Here are several more greens that have been completed height=750]http://i917.photobucket.com/albums/ad11/Planetoid51/IMG_3030_zpsgt70ffsz.png[/img]URL=http://s917.photobucket.com/user/Planetoid51/media/IMG_3030_zpsgt70ffsz.png.html](http://i917.photobucket.com/albums/ad11/Planetoid51/IMG_3030_zpsgt70ffsz.png)

Count me very interested!
Great idea!
-
Very Jetsons! This thread is completely bonkers and absolutely wonderful.
-
Yeah! An Aquamarine update! Fantastic stuff! Those figures will compliment your board perfectly! I can imagine them going well with the Hydra miniatures line.
-
I am also interested!
-
Me too!
-
I could certainly find a use for them as Mega City One citizens.
-
fantastic
-
I could certainly find a use for them as Mega City One citizens.
This was what I thought too. They'd fit in nicely depending on size.
-
For some reason I've never come across this thread.
I really like the unique design and quirkiness, yet coherence of everything on show.
-
How have I never seen this thread before? Absolutely stunning, from concept to design to painting. The ads! The use of found objects! The little incidental characters! I'll never paint another building matte grey as long as I live.*
(*I totally will, but I shouldn't.)
-
I'd love to get those figures too. Who is the company that is stalling? ;)
-
I was reluctant to post the figures as it would generate interest towards obtaining them. I will enquire as to the status of the miniatures for sale. I won't name the company involve as yet but the owner works full time and has a young family. His company is highly reliable and his product are of excellent quality. However he has a vision for his products and these figures are a diversion. Aside of getting the moulds completed, we haven't really discussed the project or about cost sharing.
I commissioned these figures out of a whim without any commercial intent. It seemed a thing to do given my need to see this world created visually. Due to my inexperience, I did not consider some factors that a commercial interest would have noted. For example I did not think about how figures have increased in size to 30-32mm. Therefore they are smallish compared to more recent miniatures. Secondly some of the miniatures are based upon cartoon characters. Their heads are sculpted close to the body to reflect the character, therefore making it hard to convert to another head. Their bodies are weedy compared to other miniatures as well. That fits with my own theme as years of robot dependency have left Future mankind a bit physically undeveloped. In comparison, the outer space marines (my earth force) are beefed up through rigorous training, nutrient supplements and gamma ray enlargement.
Anyways, I hope that you will eventually gain access to these figures and enjoy them as I do.
The small figures are mine from this series. The large figures belong to Hydra Miniatures.

I love the figures. I don't think the size differences are enough to dissuade anyone interested in them either. They come close enough to the Hydra figures in size, and those are on the large side. Once painted I think they will match up with lots of other miniatures ranges, and certainly would work for civilians in most. It's usually good to have civvies who aren't taller then the heroes.
-
Interesting figures. One of the girls is cuddling an Alien Life Form!
-
That bus and stop are simply wonderful creations that fit the retro vibe perfectly.
:-* :-*
Nice civilians too.
They will fit this theme brilliantly along with a fair few other similar settings.
A cracking idea!

I want to again thank everyone for their encouraging words and interest in my project. I don't usually like to post incomplete images however my work area has been temporarily disrupted and all I have is this so far; tractor drones,

Meanwhile I am making progress with the vendor towards making the painted figures available for market. Late summer could be possible.
And The Colonization of Space continues;

just found this thread, love it. I'm guessing you're a fan of the The Planet 51 movie?
-
Love the civilian sculpts! Love the retro look and feel of the collection and the setting!
I'm watching with interest to see when those figures go on sale :)
-
the civilians look pretty cool!
-
Wow! Really cool terrain. The retro vibe is perfect and the minis you have been selecting will feel right at home.
-
Awesome work. This is one of the most characterful projects I have ever seen.

Just practicing with Imagur. Here are some old pictures of vehicles that I started over the summer. They have since been completed. I am trying to find my way around a replacement for photobucket. I will post all the completed project items once I figure out how.
Thanks for the interest.
-
Great to see this project is still going! And I want all the figures more than ever.

They're a bit good - I absolutely love civilians in every genre! :-*
-
Hello, thank you for all who have continued to show support and interest in my project. Since losing Photobucket, I have lapsed in finding a replacement that can be used easily with the IPad. I hope this host works for now until it too goes the way of Photobucket.
Meanwhile the plan is to eventually build boards that are away from the urban setting. This requires building vehicles that will help enhance the scene.

I also thought your rubble looked great. Top job

Wow! What an update! :o All I can say is...inspirational!
I love how you flesh out your world! It must just add sooo much story to your games!

I agree with those comments, throughly delightful.

I've gone through this thread a couple of times and never commented... but I have to say that your work is stunning!
Lovely work with the vehicles!

Those vehicles are fabulous!

Crazy good!!
I'm simply amazed at your scratch building skills.
It is everything I ever wished for my own retro sci fi gaming boards. lol

( standing ovation) :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o simply awesome!

This thread just keeps on getting better. Your imagination and skill are both incredible
-
Stunning stuff :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Your imagination is amazing
-
I really love the look of your setting. I have bought my second batch of figures from this range but am having trouble finding a suitable setting for gaming on. So far my buying efforts are going to be more suitable for star Wars than a Retro look. Maybe next year I will have time to scratch build something.
-
Being from Illinois, I really appreciate the Caterpillar logo. lol Wonderful modeling and painting as usual! :-*
-
Thank you everyone for the words of encouragement. I don’t come often enough to share my appreciation. Hey Dan, happy to hear that you are exploring a retro theme. It can be a lot of fun. I see a lot of scifi products made for the Infinity game that can serve as a good base to build your world if you are pressed for time. My own take is that my modelling needn’t be ever complete and I can always revisit a project as my skills or inspiration improves.
At year’s end, I was fortunate to be able to commission a few more figures. Space corporations dislike the presence of children in their colonies. They are a source of distraction for their working parents and require specialized infrastructure and services that divert profits. However, sometimes key personnel cannot be recruited if they are separated from their children. After months of confined travel within a rocket, colonial children tend to be highly energetic and boisterous.

Some of you will know that many of my retro space commissions are now available from Hydra Miniatures. I can’t assume that this dealer will want to produce all the figures that I commission but we will have to see.
Meanwhile, space technicians are key to keeping the machinery rolling and the robots in line. They sometimes think too highly of themselves especially when their job entails mainly pushing buttons or telling robots what buttons to push.

Due to the custom nature it's such a unique table and game, I havent seen anything like it. Well done!

:o fantastic!!!!
-
Very nice retro miniatures and terrain!
-
I bought a few items of Plastcraft pre-printed buildings and walkways to evaluate and also some water pistols to have a play around with. Still feels more Star Wars though. :?
I guess some Worlds were less Retro in some of the Movies I have been watching on Youtube lately. So have come up with a compromise that I can live with and achieve (I hope).

The bright, cartoony colours and toy like appearance of the buildings, robots and vehicles illustrate a future that is lighthearted and uncomplicated. However war has erupted. Its scale and level of lethality climbs steadily. The merry optimism that once characterized mankind’s seven decades sojourn into the stars have been abruptly altered and may be lost to the generations that follow.

“... After many months travel, elements of 1st Outer Space Marine Division have engaged enemy invasion forces on Planetoid 51. Forgoing the wait for additional reinforcements, a limited offensive is necessary to secure the safety of surviving colonists and prevent additional incursions into areas under our control. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the brave men and women fighting this noble and just cause. We further wish a safe journey to the many soldiers and sailors in the follow up fleets heading towards the colony....”

Thank you everyone for the compliments and encouraging comments. My plan is to complete two theme boards this year. Hoping to have a big food farm completed by the end of May and a mine complex in the fall. Presently, I am trying to learn the Konflict 1947 rules as well as adapt new strange units to these rules.
Meanwhile, here is a photo of the last game played. The Aliens are making their final move. It was a quick game because Earth lost their heavy equipment quickly and had to retreat. Contrast this to a previous game where the aliens were butchered to one squad. The aliens being unforgiving types, transformed the ex-commander’s body into liquid goo!

This is wonderful!

I agree, it's taken to the next level from being static (but beautiful) to dynamic (but chilling). I'm liking it.
-
I am amazed by each and every new photo taken on that planetoid!

The present Future is built upon the strong bones of man’s dauntless efforts to explore and dominate outer space. Long dead astronauts, defunct space programs and faded star charts, have helped build the foundations of every colony as certain as the plastic struts used for shoring. Newly discovered relics from this past are surprisingly robust. Often they can be reemployed after minor refurbishing.

Both invaders and earth men appreciate the strategic importance of maintaining intact the Colony’s infrastructure. The local war cannot be executed well if served by a supply line stretching over several months of space travel. Furthermore, a successful consolidation post victory requires that atmosphere, water, food and power are regularly supplied on a massive scale. Yet on several occasions, field commanders have levelled farms, destroyed bridges/roadways and factories in their zest to destroy the enemy.

Wow! These are brilliant. The colors, the settings. I love it and wanna grab a coke and popcorn to watch the show!

Stunning work. The fish farm is a great addition to the setup. Are the fish shipping units from a circus truck sort of toy, I'm sure I recognise them?

Inspirational! :o :o :o

Cheers and thanks everyone. The fish tank was made from card and clear plastic. The wheels are made from wooden craft buttons and cheap metal button clasps. I used LEGO and toy parts for the rest.

Brilliant stuff.
Have you actually had a game yet?

I am looking forwards to a game after such a long time spent building. The layout may have to change to allow for better cover.
