Just wanted to thank the good cap'n for recommending Winson & Newton "Galleria" matt acrylic varnish.
It's wonderful stuff. Brushes on a treat, nice matt surface, and no nasty residue.

In that case, I really should say thank you to Pat - Theoldschool - who recommended it to me several years ago. Haven't looked back since. All my varnish disasters are behind me :)

I dread the thought of spraying newly painted figures only to give the "the white spot"!

I have literally never had the misfortune of that. I think I would switch to airbrushing varnish if I ever did. I've done some gloss coats that way prior to washes and decals and its worked well enough.
