Title: The Lead Painters League Season 10 - General Discussion (Round 11 started)
Post by: Prof.Witchheimer on December 19, 2015, 01:56:38 PM
This thread is for general discussion on the LPL10

All your rules questions should be posted here:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=85538.0

As usual we ask you all to be careful with your comments on the running entries. Keep your comments constructive. Feel free to tell us your opinion about entries, but DON'T post any comments with any sort of "quality comparison" of the pictures.

Some "no-go" examples:
- Entry A is great but I have to vote for entry B, this is so much better.
- Well entry A is so manifestly superior to entry B, that I cannot understand why so many people are voting for entry B.
- Entry A is running for the third time, so I give my vote to the Entry B, it's a newly painted one.

Any comments of this or similar sort will be deleted/censored without warning.

And now get painting. Good luck to everyone!

Question...would something like a boat be treated like an elephant. My understanding is an elephant with mahoud and 4 crew is a calid team - yes? Would some sort of watercraft containing 5 crew also be a valid team?

Elephant with mahout and 4 additional figures counts as a valid team. A boat with 5 crew would also be a valid team.

Quote
Larger beasts or vehicles, such as elephants and trucks, including their mahouts or drivers count as a single figure; any extra figures such as howdah fighting crew and passengers count as separate, additional figures.

Very excited to do LPL 10...but I wonder about the bonus for round one...

Let’s NOT take a Stand: Lying, sitting or kneeling miniatures

To score bonus points in the first round, you must paint and submit a team of at least 5 lying, sitting or kneeling figures. This specifically EXCLUDES any casualties (i.e. dead and wounded). If your team matches the above criteria, you receive an extra 10 theme bonus points.

I wonder can they be swimming? Floating? I honestly have no idea where to get 5 not standing figures that have some sort of theme. Any ideas would be welcome.

Again, super excited and already organizing some stuff for the holiday painting break.  :)

First rank of a firing line maybe?

I hope this (next) year I will have enough motivation to paint for the LPL.

Just dived into the pile and found some 28mm WWII examples - so I'm sure they exist in other genres and scales.

I do suspect that we'll be seeing a fair few Eureka figures in the first round. They do a lot of sitting and prone poses, and there are probably quite a few of us LAFers who own their Indian marketplace civilians.

Maybe, assuming it won't go against the spirit of the contest, we should start a thread about sources for figures that are sitting, kneeling, lying down or swimming/floating. It does sound like a tricky round and I'm probably not the only one having difficulty thinking of what to do for it (if I end up competing, which is not a given at this point).

Come to think of it, I have two questions about round 1:

Do animals that are sitting or lying down count? I'm thinking of camels and the like. I'd instinctively assume that a sitting camel would count, but then again that might raise issues with animals like crocodiles/alligators which are always essentially "lying down" (or swimming).

Seeing as they haven't been mentioned, would I be right in assuming that crouching and "crouch-walking" (humanoid) figures don't count? If so, where does that leave figures sitting on their haunches? It's termed as a form of "sitting" but it's really more of a form of crouching as only the feet are touching the ground or any other surface. I know I have several figures sitting on their haunches in my collection.

Yes, sitting or lying animals count, too.

And I'm not really expecting much entries with five crocodils :) But for the record and for the clarity's sake, they wouldn't count.

Models sitting on their haunches are okay. Not crouch-walking. No walking is allowed.

incl. five wagons we would be fine :)

Some questions on what would be permissible as the backdrop scenery ...

(a) A game based unit movement tray with cut-outs for the figures bases to fit in. (e.g an Impetus stand)
(b) A non game display stand with cut-outs for the figures bases to fit in. (e.g two walls and a floor plus furnishings or a multi level hillside.)
(c) As above (b) but with no cut-outs.

Basically, I would be making (a) or (b) regardless of entering the comp, so can I use them in the photos?

Oops! One more question: Can the 'non standing' squad have a standing miniature if there are at least 5 more that are not?

Cheers!

Well, I was actually thinking of them sitting around in a different situation rather than actually sitting in wagons.
Although I very much doubt that I would be entering anyway......so just ignore me.

Yeah, I too am starting to feel that I probably can't enter. As always I've let this creep up on me and haven't begun planning and preparing in advance. It's not just the figures themselves but the scenery backdrops as well (I'd rather not enter without proper terrain/scenery themed to match the figures as I think it makes all the difference). With that in mind, I might as well share my ideas for round 1:

My first idea was a group of swords-and-sorcery civilians for a multicultural marketplace with a generally Middle Eastern, African and South Asian flair. I have a few of the sitting Indian civilians from Eureka and the beggars from the Chaos in Cairo range, and at least one sitting camel (don't remember where from). I could have complemented that with one or a couple of sitting/kneeling Beja from the Perry Miniatures Sudan range converted to remove the weapons and possibly change the hair so they look less culturally distinct. Maybe also a sitting dog or monkey from somewhere if I could have found one.

My second idea was to get some skeletons (I have some old GW plastic ones, and needless to say there's plenty of other companies selling skellies as well) and convert them into sitting "funerary" poses (assuming they would not count as "casualties" that way), which should be easy enough given that they're just skeletons so I'd only need to cut and re-position some bones (no flesh or clothing to re-sculpt). Seated on stone chairs or benches they would make great dungeon decor.

My third idea was to use the seated fantasy tavern patrons from Battleline Miniatures (a small New Zealand-based company that doesn't seem to be very well-known) seeing as I already own the figures. They're very old school in style and close to true 25mm though, which is why I've never bothered painting them so far. I'd also have to model a tavern interior which obviously is a bit of work.

I am actually getting the impression that this year (well, next year) we're getting more advance warning than usual, so barring incident I'll be in.
I am trying not to buy more models, and was despairing over the round 1 entry as I like to get the challenge points (well, who doesn't? :D), seeing that I always need all the points I can scrounge. I was lucky - I have just bought the IHMN rules and was digging awayin the cellar when I found a kneeling firing line I'd forgotten about - huzzah!

Though I know, that Infinity is a far to Manga-style-modern-game for most of you, they do have quite a few not-standing minis in their repertoire.
Unfortunately I have them painted already.

I think, some bikers should work as well. Maybe there is some old Void stuff for this.

And spirit-like-floating miniatures should be allowed, too, shouldn't they? Not sure here. I remember some angelssortofthing-minis in WH40k or SMs with jump modules in jump poses.  Do they count?

I am not sure about the bonus rounds, but I will definitely do some frostgrave-gangs.

PS
I see, thanks for clearing and most likely repeating from the rules.  o_o

No. We're talking about European Middle Age.

No, no riding miniatures, so no bikers, please

No, no jumping miniatures, so they don't.

Round 1 - five cavalry - simples.

No, it's not. No cavalry please, it's not the sort of sitting that we had in mind.

No. We're talking about European Middle Age.

Would non-European peoples who had significant contact (meaning more than just the occasional Marco Polo-type journeyman) with Europeans during the Middle Ages (pre-1492) be allowed? Arabs, Moors, Mongols, Turks, etc. I'm not really asking for myself, but others might like to be clear on what applies.

Thanks for the answers so far, one more query ...

If for future gaming purposes I want a squad of 10 on a movement tray, but due to time constraints etc I only manage to finish 5 before the deadline and submit them on some random terrain or blank background. On the following week I finish the other 5 and the movement tray, is it permissible to enter all 10 on the tray for that week?

Cheers!

Yes, as long as we have a reasonable connection to the European Middle Age history (e.g. Crusades)

Yes, no orcs, not in Reneissance and also not in space :)

Yes. The number of miniatures on the picture is not limited to 5, you only need at least 5 miniatures (newly painted and never posted on internet) to be qualified for the bonus. Apart from that you are free to show whatever miniatures you want there.

Not even Space Crusade orcs? :?

I'd like to paint some orcs but now we already have two theme rounds, where orcs are specially banned. :'(

Oh well, I do have some sitting orcs. They always find a way or another to sneak in. lol

Are Bruegelburgers historically accurate?

To be honest, my spring is going to be fairly chaotic so I can't promise anything, but let's see if I somehow manage to build some buffer. Tenth season and all that. Would be a shame to miss. At least I'll try to have my annual building and basing session over the holidays. The big "undercoated stuff" box is almost empty right now, thanks to a few leagues/challenges. (I'm not sure whether these two sessions solve two linked problems or cause them by moving the queue alternately from both ends. What a deep philosophical question. Almost like the half-empty glass.)

These Landsknechts are very accurate in terms of uniform etc. but they're actually more Renaissance than medieval. So no, no points for them.

It is not perfectly clear to me whether zombies or other undead would count as "monsters" for round 10 or not.
Are monsters defined as being FANTASY? Can the be sci-fi aliens? Even terminators?
May "creatures" be animals - I mean the real kind of - not their fantasy brethren?
Or are creatures meant to be man made (like Frostgrave constructs, beast from pact of wolves, golems, etc.)?

The definition from the rules:

Round 10 – Creatures, Beasts and Monsters
This bonus round covers any Fantasy or Science-Fiction monsters and aliens under the following restrictions:
You may not submit any Orcs or Goblins.
You may not submit any “civilized humanoid” monsters, e.g. Vampires of any kind.
The monsters or aliens must be “feral”, i.e. they may not wear any uniforms, and may not wield any advanced weaponry (i.e. manufactured arms, especially firearms). Rocks, tree branches and big bones are fair game, though.

Sounds pretty clear for me. So:

No zombies or undead!
No terminators!
No "real" animals!
No man-made creatures!

It might be a good idea to read through both LPL-threads as many questions have already been discussed at length, for examle the zombie question.

You´re right on that Michael. I seem to have missed that and had better had a look. Thank you very much for pointing me in the right direction. Although I do not consider ghouls civilised in any way, I accept them being some sort of human/undead and therefore out of the game. Squigs might count as monsters though, I guess - feral, some sort of animal and fantasy creatures...  :D Werewolves should be in the game too, supposedly. However I have none of either.  :'(

No zombies or undead!
[...]
No man-made creatures!

Is this an official ruling? Nothing that's "undead" or "man-made" qualifies, even if it is "creature-like" and decidedly not civilised?

It's not lost on me that human zombies/skeletons, Boris Karloff-style Frankenstein's monsters and clockwork golems wouldn't qualify, but what about things like animated gargoyle statues, creature-like flesh golems sans trappings of civilisation, or the hybrid animal-men of Doctor Moreau as envisioned by West Wind Productions (wearing half-shredded trousers, but otherwise feral)?

The question doesn't relate to me directly, but I am curious.

That's a bit tricky, indeed, but yes, we actually did have in mind sort of feral non-man-made creatures. I wouldn't go so far and try to classify all sorts of creatures/animals being available on the miniatures market, it's not possible, really, and it's not the idea behind the LPL or a bonus round and of course as always there are enough rule gaps and crossovers there. So please, if you are not sure about special range of figures you want to use for this round so just tell us here on the thread or PM me and ask and you'll receive an answer.

To the mentioned ones:

Squigs - okay
Werewolves - okay
animated gargoyle statues - not okay
hybrid-men - not okay

After another PM request and talking to the other LPL moderators we've decided to allow the Red Box Aenglish figures for the Medieval round. Just try to pick up the not-too-fancy and realistic looking ones.

This is awesomely true! I may also be able to jump in again this year... I've already begun my sitting project, planned a few other projects, and am already thinking about terrain.

That would be awesome, Joe! I so enjoyed looking at your entries the year we were both in. AND dreading facing you, each Sunday... lol lol lol

Let's both go for it...!

For round 10, how big is 'big'?  ???

Is it relative to the other figures (twice, three times the size etc ..) or at least size 'x'?

What if the 5 'standard' models would already qualify as 'big'?

Cheers!

It's relative to the other figures. I won't be measuring this but I'd say about twice as big as the other figures.

What if the 5 'standard' models would already qualify as 'big'?

Big isn't related to 28mm but like mentioned above to the 'standard' models. No matter how 'big' the standard ones are, the bonus big one has to be yet bigger.

Nice one. Is there a running total of how many/who's entered so that we know how quickly we need to paint?

I'm up at 6am on a Saturday as the sitting/kneeling guys are giving me the irrits* (sure, I'm painting the full batch of 28 they belong to so the colours all match).

It is looking a little better for me entering, now. Just finished 5 of Bob Murch's Flint & Feather figs.

Once I get the four figs on my desk right now finished, I will officially consider myself ready to begin photographing my entries for the rounds I've completed. Without the earlier notice, there is no way I'd have been able to enter. Thanks, Prof!!!

I failed to prepare - thus prepared to fail. I have two entries pretty much finished, several more or less half way but the most important one is only base coated. My Round 1 team... So, I'm bailing out. Won't have time to finish the backlog for those first three entries before friday. Arse... =(

On the upside, I have a bunch of finished minis to blog about and play with. =D

I'm still going and plan to enter this.

Photography is my weakness, but I'm taking Friday off work (as we on AEST have until 23:00 to get our entries in) to take my photos (and not try to rush doing them after work!). This extra time does mean I've only got 3-4 entries left to paint.

What the hell was I thinking painting 28 miniatures instead of 5 for an entry?

It will be a very sad state of affairs if, in this great forum of ours, with its six and a half thousand members, we can't find more than a couple of dozen willing or able to paint 50 - 60 figures across a period of several months...  ::)

It's a tall order, Guy, I do understand. A big commitment of time and effort. So I'm not criticising LPL veterans who have decided to sit it out. I've done the same myself once or twice. But as a forum, we've picked up literally thousands of new members over the past couple of years... Don't any of these people paint wargames figures?  :?

It's odd.  I was expecting it to be "fully booked" within seconds of opening - why I'm first in.  I thought a few seconds delay and I might be number 51!

I don't make it every year - just depends on other commitments.  I took almost a year off painting so the LPL seemed like a great way to get my hand back in.   ::)

If any forum memebr is reading this who has never entered before, may I remind you it's "just for fun."  It doesn't matter how good a painter you are.  It doesn't matter if you can't manage a new team each round.  It doesn't matter if your photos are not always "perfect."

Just paint 5 figures, then repeat 10 times remembering to photograph them.  It's fun.  It really is.   :)

It may not matter to you, but is matters to me. That's way I no longer participate - I have the impression that the emphasis is more on photography/presentation than painting.

I would say this is pretty accurate, but thus is the subjectivity of creativity and technology. A masterfully painted miniature photographed with improper settings and poor lighting could easily get worse results than a tabletop quality miniature photographed well with a nice background and good lighting.  I have held off for a few years as I wanted to have the skills to present my entries well.

I don't see the problem though - there are some incredibly talented individuals on this forum and it is inspiring to see what can be achieved with their skills. I am not sure there is much more you could control with these entries to try and standardize them without stifling creativity.

Glad to see there are a few more last minute entries coming in, I am getting excited for this!

Have to admit "fun" is not the first word that leaps to my mind either. Not only do I consider my brushwork somewhere around tabletop standard -  certainly not competition level -  but I'm painfully aware my photography skills are sub par. That said, this will still spur me on to slather away at the unpainted lead mountain.

This is very true - each year there are stunning entries  from Prof.W, Cpt Blood, Chambers, Dr Matthias, Blue...and many others.  I look forward to seeing their entries but don't like getting hammered (even if it's completely justified because I'm no way near their level of presentation/painting/... )

I feel I paint enough miniatures as it is (can one really paint 'enough' ?) - so the LPL will not make me paint more. It will make me paint things I'm not really enjoying just to get the bonus.

That's a good point, btw, I was already thinking about making a LPL completely without bonus, just do anything you want. Maybe next time. We had a nice run of 10 seasons with bonus rounds hence probably it's time to change some basic things for the next one.

I think the bonus rounds are always a chance for those who feel either their photography or their painting skills slightly less competitive to gain a couple of points without being related to a voting result: Pick the right subject - 10 (or even 15!) points free! Ka-chink! :D

Personally, neutral on the bonus rounds keep or abandon for next year.  However, I do paint stuff I wouldn't usually.  LPL10 - R10 will be something I wouldn't attempt but for LPL - If I get them finished.   ::)  And R5 - fired my imagination.

Bottom line for me, happy with whatever the organisers decide.  I read the rules and follow them regardless.   :)

First time I've entered is this year, hoping to have a new team for each of the rounds but mostly because it's coincided with me finally painting a bunch of stuff from last year's Colours, so not much variation amongst my teams! Granted I'm going to get clobbered when it comes to the actual competitive bit of it, my standard no-where near that of the fine painters here but as has been said - it is only for fun  :D
Title: Re: The Lead Painters League Season 10 - General Discussion (registration now open)

As a newby, the contest does feel very daunting.  Some/many of the entries are spectacular and that can make it hard for us table top quality sloggers to want to join.  Photography is a big piece as well, but an understandable piece as the only way to share the minis is via a picture...a necessary evil if you will.

The bonus rounds are good and bad.  As a collector of a lot of random things, it gave me a chance to dig through my boxes and find something appropriate...so that is a good thing.  For those that don't have the appropriate models, I can see where that wouldn't be fun.

In the end, I am using this "competition" to paint more models and reduce the unpainted pile.  That is a good thing in my opinion.  I also had to learn to take better photos...also a good thing.  As well, it has led to me painting more terrain which I never do...and that is good.  My little people need things to hide behind.

I guess themes make you think a bit more about what you will enter. I didn't need to buy any extra minis to cover the themes, but I did need to dig around a bit in my "to paint" box to find stuff that would match the theme. Basically it made me paint things I wasn't currently working on.

Personally I would love to see Blind Voting. You only get to see who entered the team after you vote. Just helps avoid any bias.

Seeing the extension of the deadline in the end gave me the needed boost in mojo for entry  1-3. Some quick photos were taken with my phone and if those come out acceptable I'll participate after all. In the worst case I'll take some  new pictures with older models :-I

I took part in the last two but this time round I just lost my mojo over the winter months - the time when you really need to get the spadework done for this thing. I also had less terrain prepared than I wanted, so decided to skip it this time. This year I can enjoy it without the stress of deadlines.  :D

I've just voted on round one and was amazed that the standard has risen yet again. I thought that those competitors who are normally contenders for the top spots had reached their zenith, but this year they all seem to have gone that little bit further and generally everyone's standard seems to be higher than last years. Going to be an interesting season and based on this round it is going to be a hard fight for that top spot.

Been fretting all day at work, since nothing posted before my shift started...

Home again now, & My, Oh MY do we have a horserace, or whatt!!!!

Some mis-fortunate pairings of Titan vs Titan, but WOW!!

Times like these I really miss that

BOTH

button...

Adding such a device would NOT result in auto-ties.

Somebody, probably more'n a few, will vote for one, or t'other.

There will be a winner!!

& I will win too, knowing I've given accolades & approbation to both worthies!!

I mean, just lookit how many fine entrants are staring at the fuzzy end of the lollipop, this first round.

These guys are good, real good, but dayum, their equally good, or just a smidgen better opponent runs away with many more votes.

Even the over-obvious ever popular attraction of Nippleodeon makes no winner certain!

This is gonna be a whole lotta FUN!

So far the first two rounds have been interesting with some well matched sets making voting difficult.  I feel sometimes it comes down to how well they were photographed so I can better see the details in which finally gets my vote.

I do have one suggestion either for further rounds or next year's competition.
How about dropping the names from the rounds so that the voting is more anonymous?

Me too and it didn't make me happy but it had to be for some reasons. I've talked and explained everything to Michi and Steam Flunky and both guys are absolutely fine with this decision. The votes gained aren't going to loose, Steam Flunky won with about 85 vote points difference.

While it's none of my business, what happened? Did someone take offence with the nudity of an LPL entry?  :'(

Also: A tip for future moderation situations... don't nuke offending material. Censor it and leave the discussion (locked if need be) for posterity. It's usually not a problem here, but other forums suffer from the whole "what happened?! where did those threads go?"

Prof left the thread up over here. (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=88304.0)

I don't know the actual reason for removal, though, since Prof said it was nothing mentioned in that thread.

Not the nudity (which is allowed) but some particular interpretation of the scene that I am not going to explain, sorry. Now it's over, persons concerned have agreed and I would be really thankful guys for letting the subject drop. It's been a very stressful day. Thank you.

And back to the main story...

What a wonderful example of miniature painting by one and all.
Thanks to everyone who is participating as I, for one, love catching the latest instalment of the LPL on a Sunday morning and long may it continue.

Keep it up, people, it is great entertainment, full of some of the best miniature eye-candy around.

As a small request, I would appreciate if people could refrain from revealing the voting status in the comments for at least, say, 24 or 48 hours. I believe the polls are set to "no peeking" mode for a reason. Comments like "I'm getting clobbered here" or even "it's really close" on the very first day spoil that aspect to some extent. It would be fair to give most people a chance to vote with no hints, hence the suggested period of silence. So how about discussing painting until Tuesday or so and the results only after that?

I was slightly regretting not entering the fracas this year, right up until my appendix ruptured three weeks ago. I paint week to week and it would have knocked me out of even entering something, let alone compete!

Bahaha!  lol lol lol

I've begun my Round 9 this evening, too. Paycheck to paycheck, hand to mouth, whatever you want to call it when you have only the week between submitting the upcoming round's photos on Thursday and the following Thursday to get them done.

This is definitely the part of LPL I call "the grind"... :D

My fondest memory of LPL was when -- to get the final round finished -- I had to set my alarm clock to get up every 2 hours to paint some more, let it dry, set the alarm clock... o_o

And, what the heck, for flashback sake, here was the result of a redeye night of painting and photographing before the deadline that next morning..."Frog Gigging Gone Wrong!"

Yes, that is a very nice piece indeed. :)

I am heartened to hear other veterans of past LPLs acknowledging the physical/psychological grind of the later rounds. I accept that I am just a painting wimp, having now completed more figures for these last 8 rounds than I completed in the last 8 months ... or possibly in the past 8 years (if I only count fully painted rather than mostly painted models)!  :o

In the process of flocking my entry for the upcoming round 9 ("And now, for something completely different..."  lol). I plan to photograph it and send off the pic Thursday. Meanwhile, Round 10 was glued together tonight, and will likely be primed tomorrow. Chances are, I will be foregoing the "big" bonus points again. I just didn't have anything that matched the theme.

The question is: Will I paint a new entry for Round 11? Or will I forego the "new" bonus and stage and photograph some diabolical scene using previously published figs? I have an idea for a fallback if I don't get a new Round 11 painted...

We're in the home stretch, boys...!  o_o

The only reason I made it this week is because we got a day of to celebrate the kings birthday, normally not a fan of the Dutch Royal house, but he sure helped me out this week  :D spend the entire day painting yesterday and managed to finish my round 9 entry and even managed to start round 10, and there's more national holidays and a days of work in the next two weeks so hopefully will manage to get round 10 and 11 done in time  :D

Thanks for the words of encouragement, Michi. My thought, though, is to do a shout-out to the Professor's amazing run of entries with his hordes of newly-painted miniatures for this season. I would put scads of figs in there for a really cool scene I have in my mind. I'd be losing the "New" bonus, though. So, yes, I'll submit a Round 11, but it may be the only one of my season that doesn't qualify for the new bonus...

Didn't get my planned round 11 entry done in time, so I pulled out some stuff I painted last year. So in all I used 4 older teams of miniatures (touching up two of those sets this year), and 7 completely new teams.

I just did a break down of the new miniatures I painted in 2016 for the LPL:

x47 28mm miniatures
x1 28mm cannon
x2 28mm horses
x5 1/72 aircraft
x45 15mm cavalry

Wow. Coming in the bottom group doesn't seem so bad now.

Thanks Alex for running this (and painting some lovely entries yourself!).

Well done! I counted 96 28mm miniatures I painted for LPL10 that you saw, 5 which were retracted in round 2 and 16 you never saw, because I prefered to contribute substitutes -that´s a total of 117. Thank you all for the help of shrinking my lead pile and to the Prof. for a big, big show by both his own entries and showing us all the eye candy from the contributing contestants.
