Title: Ogryn Mercenary.... (Outland) 12/04
Post by: Mason on January 25, 2016, 01:14:55 PM
I am embarking on a long term sculpting, modelling and gaming project based on a 'frontier' world on the extreme edge of the Sapien Empire, an interstellar collection of all the planets originally colonized by humans originating from Earth in the twenty-fifth century.

This has been inspired by our recent Inquisimunda campaign for which we have been utilising my existing scenery collection where my Old West town of Upsheet Creek and its environs has proven most useful.
Combined with a few figures that I made as alternatives to Ratskin Scouts for our Necromunda games, it seemed a relatively straightforward and natural option to set the I-Munda campaign principally on an OW-themed frontier world in a similar vein to Firefly (a TV series which I didnt take to at all, by the way).

So here is the result.....

This thread will show the progress of this idea, both modelling and gaming wise, although the gaming itself will have to wait a while as we have a few things to do first...

This planet will have several factions populating it.
The first of which will be known as the Outlanders, who are descendants of the original settlers who ventured far from the original designated 'safe' sites to form smaller farming, hunting and trapping communities.

The original figures for this project were the 'alternative-Ratskins' already mentioned.

Although I liked the idea behind Ratskins in Necromunda I was not so keen on the figures.
The idea of a fella wandering in a giant ratskin cloak, complete with head....nah, I just didnt fancy that.

So here are my alternatives to them, which were originally known as the Savage Scouts in this form....

These three were painted for me by Bugsda.

There were originally only going to be the three of them but that idea grew into something else (sound familiar?) and now there are quite a few more of them to come.

They are due to go off for casting this week.
Pictures of those later....

Another exciting project in teh making Mason!

I really like your alternative scouts, as they are fairly versatile for several systems. The idea of more of them is great - can't wait to see pictures!

Thanks, gents.
I opted for sensible attire as they will fit much better into my future aesthetic this way.
There are plenty of half-nekkid ladies out there already.

Good.

Thanks for the compliment, sir, but I feel that I shall be disappointing you on the adobe front.
At least for a while, anyway....

Others...?
Quite a few of them.
 ;)

For now, here are some more 'veteran' members of the warband, carrying various prosthetics, scars, injuries and some heavier weaponry....

Depending on how you paint them, the whole band could work as Scavvies easily enough, which I fully intend to do with a set myself.
All they now need is a 'shaman'......
 ;)

This project is fantastic!

Thank you, sir.
Much appreciated.
 :D

The heavies would definitely do for skavvie sin 'munda, mate, top effort  :)

The idea is to make them as generic as possible in order to make them usable in as many genres as possible, so, as a gang in Necromunda, utilising either the Scavvy or Ratskin list (even the Delaque would work as they are made for stealth).
T think they would also work pretty well in a post apocalyptic setting too.

I will also be using them as the Outlanders in my own setting as well, of course.
 ;)

Anyway, back to the figures, here is today's offering:

The Shaman and two more male warriors....

That makes twelve, so far, which is a nice number for a gang or warband for skirmish gaming,

Mighty fine trio there,  the chap on the right looks menacing and if that axe is meant for him, even more so!  :o

Good thing that the shaman packs a firearm too, but is it easy to clip off is somebody wants a non firearm user?

Left one is also great, the mohawk is very fitting :)

That axe is indeed with him, and will slip into his open left hand if desired.
 ;)

Good thing that the shaman packs a firearm too, but is it easy to clip off is somebody wants a non firearm user?

It should be easy enough but I could always make an unarmed shaman type in the future if needs be. In my planned setting a man would always carry a weapon, shaman or not.
 :)

Left one is also great, the mohawk is very fitting :)

They all have rather stylised hairdos to mark them as Outlanders, in a similar fashion to the various indigenous populations of the USA.

Ah, these three have even more character!
This is getting better and better...

Thank you, sir.
That is it for the 'Outlander War Party' for now but there are still a few more figures to come in this initial wave.

The Outlanders have their own law which is enforced by the Marshalls, who often use Cyber-hounds to track and apprehend criminals.

 ??? ???

I am glad that the Marshall and his menagerie seems to have gone down well.
I have a couple of uses for him outside of my own setting as he will be leading the rest of the band in our next round of Necromunda shenanigans (Scavvies or Ratskins, not decided yet...) and I HAVE to paint one up like a pimp as a character for our Inquisimunda campaign.

Let's just say aliens with slightly 'furry' tendencies, and bio-ships that were partially inspiration for GZG's Phalon ships.

Anything further would be TOTALLY off-topic.

Both Porters have the same contraption on their backs which has been left deliberately empty so that their 'loads' can be changed to suit the needs of the owner.

I now need to start working on some scenery for the setting, but intend using my Old West scenery, with suitable 'clip-on' additions to sci-fi the place up a bit.

I think that they will work well as the basis for an Outlander settlement or trading centre.
Here are a few pictures of when it was used for one of our recent Inquisimunda games......

I think it will look good, mixing the retro with the more futuristic and I already have the 'old' stuff so why not use it?
The more rural stuff will work well too.

Now I just need to find time to make some progress with it all....

Sometimes repurposing terrain and scenery gives rise to some unexpected opportunities.  I'm loving the sci-fi frontier concept. It reminds me of stuff like the original Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Battle Beyond the Stars and stuff like that. All good things!

Of course, originally, the reasons they used the scenery were the same as Mason's. 'Already there, saves money, it's what the carpenters know...'

Does indeed bring back pleasant memories to this old fanboy.

I have finally gotten around to (rather sloppily) slapping some paint on some of the figures, beginning with the Merchant and his Porters...

Now I just need to make some 'loads' for them to carry.

Hopefully the next lot, as I want quite a few of them for my games, will look better....

Well, I took a delve into my 'clutter bits box' and put some together.

Firstly, a 'sensible' load.....

...which I will use on one of the later figures, but it does not seem right for sci-fi to me so I made a few 'not so sensible' versions.....which seem more appropriate to me.

Haven't been paying attention, and funny thing, as amazing as it's all coming out to be, wasn't shocked. Problem with being a legend in MY mind, Mason ol' bean.  :D

'Sherdaws', IS catchy! Of course, in their language, just means 'impoverished younger relatives...'  lol

Speaking of which, I finished off the 'loads' for the first two of the Porters...

The next couple will have smaller loads, but I need to finish off some of the Outlander figures first.

They are supposed to be exceptially strong and steady (they are all solid legs under that robe) but I DID intrntionally make these loads on the extreme side for fun.
I shall make the rest a little smaller, more like this example.....

Title: Female Nomads (The Outlanders-An Inq-Munda setting) 11/03
Post by: Mason on March 11, 2016, 11:29:55 AM
I have started to paint some of the Outland Warriors, beginning with a couple of the female members of the band.

As someone else will be painting a group up in the 'official' buckskin colours I have opted to paint some differently in more garish gear to represent a different type of band.
These will represent a nomad band in the Outlanders setting, which will double up as a Scavenger gang in our Necromunda games...

Outfitted in much brighter clothing than some of the other groups on Outland, the Nomad culture favours brighter clothing which has often seen better days once exposed to the elements for a while.

With all that fur trim I'm guessing they're from a 'fringe world'. Baddum tish! I'm here all week, try the veal!

They could be good for Dredd too, though to be honest I'm pretty interested in the Outlanders game setting from what I've heard so far.

They could be good for Dredd too, though to be honest I'm pretty interested in the Outlanders game setting from what I've heard so far.

I can see the Dredd thing: Cursed Earth outcasts, maybe.
It was suggested earlier that they could be female Valhallans as well, which is something that had not occurred to me.

As for the Outlanders setting: I hope to do a bit more on the scenery side of things soon too, just for my own games and scene setting at the moment.

Post by: Mason on April 05, 2016, 10:19:32 AM
While I have the time today I will take the opportunity to collect some of the pictures that have been taken recently for various things together in one place...

Beginning with the Marshall and Hounds.

The Hounds are a key feature of gaming in the Outland setting, which will become clearer later... ;)

Some scenes that were set up featuring some of the figures and scenery that will be being used....

Title: The First Three Characters.... (The Outlanders-An Inq-Munda setting) 18/10
Post by: Mason on October 18, 2016, 03:28:45 PM
The characters really do belong here too....so, I shall add them here as I complete them.

The first three:

The Priest with Cyber-Hound

This mysterious robed figure that wanders the streets of Landfall is known locally as 'The Priest'.
Nobody knows exactly what he is doing in Landfall.

Some say he is a Priest of a long dead hokey religion.
Others that he is a representative of a mysterious clandestine organisation.
Some even speculate that he is a spy for the Empire of Man.

Whatever the truth is, he can always be seen accompanied by his Cyber-Hound, chatting amiably with all and sundry.

What is his real purpose in the city?
Nobody knows for sure, but everybody seems to have their own theory.

The Bounty Hunter with 'Mule'.

Tuss-Ken is a member of one of the many desert nomad tribes that populate the Southern wastes. He is a well known character within the criminal and law enforcement societies of Landfall as his services are often sought out from both sides of the law.
If someone wants somebody 'found' in the Southern desert they know who to call.

He is accompanied at all times by his 'mule' which carries his equipment for him. Not many know that the 'mule' is actually a viscous, massive hound that can shrug off the robes and packs he carries quite easily and chase after Tuss-Ken's pray at command should the need arise.

The Customs Officer and Sensor-Bot

Officer DI-88-LE is stationed at the main starport of Landfall, working in the many docking bays checking cargo manifests and monitering the import of goods to ensure that everything is above board and legal.
Wearing a heavy duty armoured overcoat that contains many inbuilt devices it also provides a good degree of protection should there be any incidents.
One of the most obvious features in the suit is the translation device attached to the collar to enable him to communicate with the varied species that utilise the facility as well as ensuring that he can keep in constant connection with the rest of his department and Spaceport Security.
He also has cybernetic aural implants to aid communication and also protect him from any concussive assault on his senses.

His constant companion in his duties is his sensor-bot, SN1-FF-A, who he keeps up a constant barrage of binary cant whilst going about their duties.
They may suffer from a distinct lack of personality and social skills but between them they perform an excellent job maintaining the security and upholding the service of the Customs section in Landfall spaceport.

More to come as I finish them....

The Tracker with Stealth-Pattern Cyber Hound.

Ranger Raye is an expert tracker and scout currently serving with the 7th Ranger Company of the Outland Security Forces. More at home in the dense woodlands of the Northern continent or the deserts further South than while in garrison at Landfall, she can move almost silently through the trees and dunes leaving no trace of her passing.

She is usually accompanied by her Stealth-Pattern hound 'MU-TT-L33' who is equipped with chameleon-like armour plates that enable him to be all but invisible in any surroundings when still, and an enhanced nasal tracking device that can seek out chemical traces as well as biological scents.

A Judge Dredd Klegg has been subtly converted into an Ogryn and been painted for another project.
He will, however, also be added to the slowly growing collection of figures that should prove suitable for the Outland Inquisimunda setting.
