Title: Locomotives in Northern Africa
Post by: ivor13 on February 19, 2016, 04:01:25 AM
Hey guys,
Hoping for some expertise from the group; I'm wondering what types of locomotives you would have found in Northern Africa in the years roughly from 1920 through 1940, give or take. Looking to find a train for a pulp type game (28mm) in that time frame; any help with photos, suggestions, or links would be greatly appreciated  :)
Thanks again!

As a rule of thumb, they will be manufactured by companies from the appropriate colonial powers, (UK, France, Italy) for the most part. If you go to the former Turkish Empire you'll also encounter ones of German manufacture. I'd just do a google search using the approximate date (c 1930), country and 'railways' & see what turns up. You can clearly tell pre- and interwar engines of British origin from German ones, but itīs a bit more difficult with French and Italian locomotives (which of course do neither look German nor British - if that helps...).

Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated  :D

Never would have thought a trolley system would have been used!

I apologize (it was late where I live when I originally posted), I should have better worded asking for pictures/links and also said if anyone has examples of what they have or use as well, that'd be great (any scale).

I would say have a look at this link.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_South_African_locomotive_classes
Each Loco has the dates in service, a link to what the loco is and teh company fro which it was operated.

Once you find one you like, a quick google search would throw up what companies have a model/kit that would represent it.

Id help more but not knowledgeable enough on the African railways... lol

Hope this helps :)

South African trains are rather unique and are very particular to South Africa. What is more is that the original posting asked for North African examples.

See http://mikes.railhistory.railfan.net/r052.html for locos in Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria.

What countries in particular would you be looking for?

Again, thanks for the replies, very much appreciated!

Good stuff to look at in the links, again thanks. As far as countries I'm looking at, pretty much everything that runs left to right across the top of the continent; Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt.

A good photo with French engines, a map and a nice advertising poster for Moroccan railways: http://dafina.net/forums/read.php?52,189897

Algeria looks very similar from what I found, except that they have a variety of standard gauge and at least four different narrow gauges...

The British engines look like those in the UK.
