Title: Scum and villainy (the world's oldest Space Ork?!)
Post by: Hobgoblin on March 07, 2016, 03:35:18 PM
Some miniatures for a mash-up SoBH/Mutants and Death Ray Guns/Flying Lead/Fistful of Kung Fu game that I've been running for my kids and some of their friends:

Nice stuff. The Eldar has a RT space pirate sort of feel that works well with guardian/dire avenger minis.

And I adore the sneer behind the lizardman's blaster.  ;)

Great group; do you have an appropriately wretched hive for them?  lol

Cool collection. I appreciate the genre mashup!!!

Some sort of scanning/targeting device (a neural implant)? I'm quite happy with how it looks in the ... plastic. I think the middle shot with the black background shows it best - three scopes of some kind.

It's what all the blue-furred bounty hunters are sporting this season!

Excellent work Hobgoblin :). I love kit bashing and tooling up fantasy models with guns. I did that to a load of beastmen ages back, intending to use them as mutants for either 40K or my own Inquisitor-themed Strange Aeons. Didn't paint them or anything, but it was fun converting them.

This look slike a lot of fun - bet you are enjoying playing, too  ;).

Many thanks, chaps!

Legionnaire Bert: oddly enough, I have a couple of beastmen under the knife at the moment.

Here's an "ash gremlin". I have five of these almost done. They'll act either as primitive "wandering monsters" who can emerge from a number of connected burrows under the gaming table to swarm isolated, or as add-ons to a player warband (bribed with sugar, which they crave with a chemical zeal). We'll use the ASoBH Gang trait, which allows up to five of them to activate as one, along with the Gregarious trait. I'm planning a slightly higher-tech leader with a scavenged gun.

Quite what I had in mind, but was brought up a wee short with 'three', being used binocular thingies. I suppose it could be tracking in RGB.  lol

Really liked, but just an idle question. Next little fellow actually brings up more questions, but only adds to his 'charm'.  Doesn't seem like the right word, does it?  ;)

Me too.
It takes me back to my early RT days when I painted my Orks as brown skinned.
I much preferred it (and still do) to green.
I may go this way with my own (when/if/ever/ I get around to them...).

I'm terribly late to this party, but I just wanted to add my two cents too.

I love that "warhammer Regiments" plastic Orc conversion. I've often thought of doing it too, but I wasn't sure how to go about Sc-fi'ng him up in a convincing manner. You've done it incredibly Mr Hobgoblin!

The RT "kulo" paint job looks ace....I really like the blue on his blade!

And the freehand faces are way cool. Keep em coming man, their really cool.

Sorry, missed this at the time! I undercoated white, washed in Agrax, drybrushed up in white and then did thin washes of paint and ink/wash over the top. There's a tutorial (along with a black-undercoat one) around page 65 of my fantasy thread (I think).

I've posted individual shots of these three on my fantasy thread (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=77384.1305), but here's a group shot for this one:

I used the same procedure as for my 'cave goblins' (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=77384.msg1316519#msg1316519): Wych Elf Flesh (or Vallejo silver-grey) washed with a mix of Citadel blue glaze and Biel-Tan Green, then highlighted back up in Wych Elf/silver-grey.

Here's a very quick lizardman kitbash. I tried to get him done in an hour (excluding undercoat), but I see from the podcast I was listening to that he took about an hour and 16 minutes. He's for Mutants and Death Ray Guns at the weekend.

And here it is in action.

My 10-year-old painted the jet-packed lizard-chap: a kitbash of his own devising. He's very pleased with him - and I was struck by how well the OSL effect on the base worked on the table. I could give him neither help nor advice on that, but he was determined to give it a go.

Yes, those are Frostgrave snakemen, one with some GW gun added.

area23: removing the backpack from the space marines makes them look significantly different, I think.

I was going to use the snakemen in today's multi-player MDRG game, but yesterday afternoon, I had a different idea: space monkeys!

I kitbashed five of them and painted them up in time for the game. Alas, that meant I'd slathered them with gloss varnish before taking a photo, but here they are anyway. They had a successful debut, winning the game by a whisker, despite being 50 to 100 points weaker than the five other warbands.

These are very simple paintjobs, but I was pleased with how they turned out. There's something about MDRG that's a great spur to just knock out a few miniatures to get on the table. I might make a few more of these, so that two squads could work in unison.
Title: Re: Scum and villainy (now with space monkeys!)
Post by: Hobgoblin on January 21, 2019, 12:28:42 AM
And here's another speed-painting experiment. I'd been thinking about camouflage; the space monkeys almost ended up in urban-camo robes. Then I thought about painting some creature to match the gravelly basing scheme I use for our sci-fi miniatures. Tyranids were the obvious candidate; we've got loads kicking around after I bought a second-hand job lot for about a fiver a few years back. I've tried various schemes out on them, but they've all been a bit daunting to repeat on however many we have (not to mention my son's Space Hulk genestealers ...).

But this might work. I painted base and mini all in one: one base coat for both, one wash and one drybrush. Then all I did was tint the muscly areas, paint the eyes and touch the teeth up in pure white. Drying time for the wash is the main concern; otherwise, it takes no time at all. So I'm going to do a load like this. I'm thinking of running an MRDG scenario with a hive of aliens as the main environmental hazard and various spawning points around the table (maybe six: d6 for each at the end of each turn; a 6 indicates a spawn, with a roll on a table to determine number and type - very much in the Klendathu vein).

I've been speed-painting tyranids for this weekend's Klendathu-tinged MDRG game. These are taking about 20 minutes a piece, I reckon: grey base coat, Nightshade wash, white drybrush, Camoshade wash on select bits, then eyes and teeth in white and eyes in red and yellow. The tongues, which are blue with a Nightshade wash and some lighter highlights, are the fiddliest bits. I've got the highlights on those to do on most of the swarm, along with the base edges. I hope to have doubled the horde's size by Sunday afternoon if the Six Nations allows.

I'm quite pleased with how these look given their minimal treatment. If I wasn't planning to use them as stealthy, camouflaged creatures, I'd do the bases a Martian orange-red for contrast. I may yet revisit them to do that at some point in the future.

His cute.

Always interesting miniatures and or colours on show here. Love the way fantasy miniatures get a gun and are suddenly transformed into Sci-Fi minis. lol

Keep 'em coming...

Thanks, chaps!

I've been playing around with some greyscale/contrast-paint experiments on the fantasy thread and decided to have a go at some Stargrave mercenaries that have been lying around assembled for a while.

For these, I just brushed on a lot of mid-grey paint, leaving a little bit of black in the recesses, and then highlighted generously in white mixed with matt medium. The next step was to slosh on some heavily thinned contrast paints. I added a few details and then gave them a very light drybrush in ivory to make them look a bit dustier. The reptilian chaps need a bit more work (eyes, teeth, tongues), but should be done soon.

They're nothing special, but this was a very quick and fun way to get them tabletop-viable.

Those came out well! Nice choice of colours, too. I like that they’re subdued, my main complaint about contrast paints is that they can make everything look too saturated.

Looking good mate! Lots to love in this thread. Your Tyranids look how I tend to picture them and you make me regret selling the Mantic Salamanders I used to have. I was not a huge fan of the Stargrave plastics at first but I have really come around to loving them.

These look great! Even the white mid-stage coat looks like something I'd be happy with on some nameless trooper minions.

Thanks, guys!

Here's some even quicker and dirtier speed painting. I ordered a sprue of Stargrave troopers on a whim and got them assembled during Friday lunchtime. Today, I got them painted during half-time breaks while watching the rugby - through the simple expedient of just drybrushing everything the same colours and then adding a few details afterwards.

Those are nice.  "quicker and dirtier speed painting" you say?  Clearly I don't know what the hell I'm doing with a brush . . .  lol

Thanks, both! There's really nothing to these: just two layers of drybrushing, some contrast paint over the weapons and then some details in bright colours.

The troopers got their first outing yesterday in a game of Mutants and Death Ray Guns. They proved mercilessly efficient, making short work of an outlaw gang led by Cad Bane (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLr6Wp1yfRAKGx9MZ7yy1kA). Excuse the 'raw' scenery!

There's a definite Rogue trader feel to these; must be the brightly coloured accents  8)

I really like them. I have a couple of Stargrave sets myself, and I find this quite inspirational indeed :)

Thanks!

I've recently repainted the bases on a lot of the earlier entrants on this thread. We always use one of two 'red desert' mats for our sci-fi gaming, so it made sense to homogenise the basing on the earlier figures. I'm also - gradually - applying matt varnish to the earlier ones, which were previously gloss only. It seems to smooth the roughness of some of the drybrushing.

On a different note, I'm surely not the first to note how well the Frostgrave wizard kits go with the Stargrave crew sprues. I'm very impressed with the new female crew sprue - here's the first use of its arms with a wizard body and head.

Stands to reason the Frostgrave and Stargrave sets are interchangeable, but your result is just flawless!

This opens up so much more avenues to kitbash and make unique miniatures :)

And the basing looks great, especially when they're all grouped together like that, in all their ecclectic glory; it ties them together quite nicely  8)

Nice work on the troopers.

The wizard kitbash is cool. Looks like it has a bit more movement to the body sculpt than the rank and file Northstar sprues.

Any dusty sci-fi setting needs some primitive marauders to come howling out of the wastes at inopportune moments. These Copplestone half-orcs looked the part, I thought; I've got the rest of the range on order to make them a reasonably sized force.

I envisage three main uses for these fellows in our sci-fi games. First, they'll offer a challenge for players who want to eschew the pew-pew for some brutal hand-to-hand action. Second, they'll provide a consolation prize for any player who gets knocked out early from a multiplayer game ("OK, these guys turn up - you're in charge. They want to take as many heads as possible/steal some tech/destroy all technology."). Because they don't have guns, they'll represent a fair step down from the starting force, regardless of what rules we're using. Third, they'll act as a band of wandering monsters, which we usually include in our games to add some spice.

I'm going to add some accompanying beasts with the same markings as the shields. If I get through the rest of the Copplestone guys, I might supplement them with some of the new Crusader half-orcs.

Always loved these miniatures. They look great here too... repurposed for Sci-Fi. Do like the savage shield and particularly the eyes.

The ideas on how they could be used in game are cool too - lucky players indeed...

Thanks, both!

Here's some crude WIP terrain (inspired by the legendary Spacejacker's instagram). This is one box-built building with various smaller structures that can either stand alone as small buildings or be placed on the big one as upper storeys.

Everything fits inside the main building for easy storage - and a few more bits and bobs should fit inside too: a couple more small buildings and various add-ons (turrets, satellite dishes, gun placements).

The paintwork is still very much work in progress, though I've since advanced the windows quite a bit. I'm going to do a lot of neatening up, staining and graffiti-using. The kids have also been building some buildings, so we should have a little outpost done by the weekend.

Very nice, although in all honesty I was quite taken with your 'raw' terrain! The bare box colour worked rather well with the gaming mat - nice and desert planet-like.

I've been following that instagram too, and am very envious of both your and Spacejacker's results.

Thanks! I know what you mean, but it was just a bit too perfunctory on the table. The plan is to end up with lots of buildings in different colours (the first few are the same colour because of the modularity thing, but I'm going to have others in pale blues, greens, yellows and pinks - all dusty and sand-blown, of course).

I've been following that instagram too, and am very envious of both your and Spacejacker's results.

Spacejacker's semi-minimalist approach is really elegant; I can't match that, so am going to go with a bit more detail! As these WIP shots show, my sponge-painting skills aren't really up to scratch - I keep getting splotches of thick paint on the stuff. I'll deal with those with staining shortly.

I haven't got much more done, but I have blocked in the windows a bit more. I'm going to blend those a fair bit more and then gloss varnish them. I also need to make some ramps or steps for the doors on the main building. Those are raised up from the ground to allow the box lid to fit on (I've added detail to it so that it can be painted up and used in play too). I plan to have the stairs 'clamp' the building in place on the table - so that they carry the blue-tack rather than the edges of the box (if the lid isn't used).

The buildings are done for now - barring some gloss varnish on the windows. Once we get a few more different ones done, I might experiment with some graffiti.

Working with 28mm as opposed to 15mm does, I suppose, both allow and sometimes necessitate a bit more in the way of detail. Either way, they look great! The red nicely offsets without overwhelming the dark weathering.

Perhaps leave them bare for now but keep a couple of acrylic pens handy. After each battle, add a new squiggle somewhere to mark the occasion!

I've just caved in and picked up a few RT era Orks, and its quite noticeable that some of them are fantasy Orcs with bits glued on, so I guess if it was good enough for the Design Studio.... :D
