I painted iron man today.

I was always put off from doing nmm as I couldn't get my head around how to place the light. Rather than copy the official art I instead spent a couple of hours working from basic principles figuring out where the highlights and shading should be. There are a few spots that went wrong but overall I'm happy with the result.

If I could give any constructive criticism its that the gold appears a little dull for Iron man but it's still a fantastic paint job (far far better than anything I could do).

.....the figure not so much. The body looks a little long! :?
I've heard that if you hold the figure under a strong light before you undercoat it, maybe even take picture, then use that as a reference. That might help? I'm saying this, but it's stunning as is!
There's a guy on here, Duff, who's the master of NMM and use of light. He has a thread for 2000AD and cluthu stuff. He's maybe worth pm'ing for tips?

Yeah, the gold was a little rushed. It was getting late, my palette was drying out and I wanted to finish in one sitting. :)

I'll be writing about my approach on my blog at some point soon. It won't be a full step by step tutorial but more of how I thought through the process.

Brilliant! :o More excellence! Deadpool has been one of my favourite films of recent times........the new Xmen one has been good too. Wolverine has a wee part in that as well.

I’m not painting anything now as I’m currently visiting the folks back in the home country. I can’t remember the last time I went so long without holding a brush. :( On the plus side my mum found a load of old gw stuff for me to take back and I’m visiting Warhammer World for the first time in a few days. :)

Today marks my third year of living in the USA and to celebrate I painted Captain America. I was feeling a bit adventurous so went with nmm on the shield which didn't turn out quite right but it looks better than flat colours.

I painted up Nova today. I made a bit of a mess of the start but managed to salvage it and the result wasn't too bad in the end. Probably should have used a reference for the helmet though - couldn't quite figure out the nmm and it looks quite flat in comparison to the rest.

It's a combination of painted shading and actual cast shadow. I tend to forget to bounce light from beneath the model.

Wow, great work here. They way you bend the light is amazing. I like superhero miniatures because they always look 'right'. As they are already painted on the page.

I've never done any object source lighting before and I didn't want to make my first attempt on a model I spent quite a long time on.

I'm not in anyway a natural, I didn't even take art at school. I've just had lots of practice.

Much nicer minis; at least as gorgeous painting. The gradation of light and shade on Ms Marvel's legs is outstanding, and you have me wondering how much of the shadow on the Sentinel's left leg is natural and how much painted - I genuinely cannot tell the difference.

I think the technique was pioneered by Jeremie Bonamant Teboul and is featured on his dvd which I've watched loads of time but I only thought to use the technique recently when I was messing around with my airbrush. I've found it really suits my painting style and has sped up my painting a great deal.

Thanks. Batman was the easiest to paint. I sketched in the highlights with an airbrush, did some washes then finished with an outline and edge highlight. Wonder woman on the other hand was one of the most annoying models I've painted. So many little details. But future attempts should be easier.

A good book I found useful is How to Render by Scott Robertson. It goes into a lot of detail on how different materials reflect light.

I think like blacks - the trick is to pair it with another colour to give a "tone". Simply stunning and those clocks are all nicely painted. Was that fun?

Yeah, the models don't look that interesting but they have a nice mix of details and smooth areas that provide a satisfying technical challenge to paint.

Here are some gaming standard blackgate prisoners. I used synthetic brushes to paint these. I've wanted to make the switch for some time but finding brushes that weren't totally rubbish wasn't easy. These turned out okay given the circumstances but the higher quality stuff might prove to be difficult.

I switched to using synthetic brushes only, something I wanted to do a long time ago but was worried that my painting would suffer. It's hard enough trying to earn a living as a miniature painter without putting myself at a disadvantage. The first couple of weeks were slow going but I made adjustments, learnt a few new techniques and I'd say now I'm a better painter. :)

Normally I use a mix of yellow and white but in this instance I went with white only. The lighting is so dramatic on these guys that painting them was much easier than on models with more subtle colour transitions. I still have the warsuit Lex Luthor to paint so I'll try to write up a tutorial for him.

Yeah, the pose is terrible. It's a given that the ankle will snap and a reinforcing pin is essential. But that's a feature of many of km's female models and this has only gotten worse since the switch to super fragile resin.

In preparation for the release of the new Marvel game I decided to try my hand at some comic style painting again. Rather than start from scratch I thought it would be better to convert already painting models as a way to gain insight between the styles and it was an interesting exercise in understanding form and contrast. I've posted the photos in order of painting so you can see the progression. Some came out better than others and I think I still need more work before I'm confident of getting a consistent result.

For some reason the green arrow really stands out to me. Wonderfull how you managed to get so much interesting hues and still have it look the same green all over.

I suspect Dallas Kemp could paint better if he wanted.
And yes the details are a struggle to deal with especially since I like to use relatively thick paints. Iron Man took about three attempts to get right and by the end I had to use a reference image to locate the panel lines.

He might be able to paint better, but I wonder if he can get that spot-on superhero look you always manage to get.
And no...I'm not looking forwards to painting mine I must say...and I think the assembly is terrible too. I think I never disliked assembling miniatures as much as with these.

I've been looking forward to these models untill I starter painting them. The sculpts are really cool and lovely poses, but I had to dunk a model in alcohol for the first time in a long while to clean it.
Assemly wasn't to bad overall, except for Iron man and ultron which had several parts that where very similar and took me a while to figure out how each leg would go together and where I should put it. For the price of the mini's I was expecting more, but I a huge marvel fanboy.
The game is fun enough, though.
Back to the topic of the thread, this is jawdropping as ususal. I hope mine come out 1/4 as nice and I'll be very happy indeed.

Meh, that's an overtalked piece of plastic. The thing is that they feel unnecessarily complex and they can be improved. If you compare these to Games Workshop plastics, AMG can improve their plastics a lot. They're not bad, but they're not great gateway models. And with a license like this they should be nice and easy to assemble. I can imagine this will attract people new to the hobby simply because it's Marvel and comes with a nice and shiny boxed set. But the assembly will be very daunting for beginners.

Between painting for 10 hours a day and keeping up with everything that's going I've not had time for anything else. Things are starting to settle down and not having to chase after work is freeing up some mental energy so I'll be catching up with all of my finished projects soon enough.

Your painting style is very great, comic light. The colours are very brigth and shiny. Do you use "normal" colours or special colours???

I mostly use regular hobby paints (vallejo model color, scale color and a few others). I do have some artist paints and inks but I find them difficult to incorporate into my process and whilst they have some interesting properties I could do without them.

Hello leadadventure! I guess it's been a while since I last posted. 2021 was a good year overall but I had too many things that required my attention and that's not something I have a lot of. One of those things was to improve the quality of my painting which isn't necessarily an easy thing to do and what I found was most of my progress was done when walking the dogs and I didn't have anything to distract my thoughts. In order to put my ideas into practice I really got back into painting as a hobby something I haven't been able to do since I started painting for money. As much as I enjoy the commissions they do require a certain amount of efficiency and consistency whereas painting for myself provides and opportunity to take things slowly, make mistakes and revisit the model at a later date. It was a fun experience and the end result was a nice looking collection of models and a better understanding of how this miniature painting works.
