Gents,
With the Masai done it's time for some opposition. For me the plan is to do the Germans of East Africa c.1885-1894.
With that I have laid out the plan, some thoughts and ideas on what to do, orders of battle, possible battles and campaigns along figures to use to build these forces.
Pop on over to the blog and check out the 'plan' for the Kaiser's Imperial forces in East Africa.
Hope you find it useful.
Cheers

Great blog you have there. It contains a lot of info I am interested in. Thanks for sharing!

You're welcome ;)
I just added the two army lists for the Germans (I forgot in the initial post) so pop back and view them if you missed them first time around ;)

Love the Maasai! Shame they had to fight the Germans, really. Look forward to seeing how it all develops.

Hi James,
Plenty of Masai love on the blog...all your retina can handle! I guess it's always possible a south or north bound wandering Masai warparty could bump into a British/Explorer force and ruin their day...maybe Thomson's whizzbangery ends in tears and Stanley has to be dispatched (as was the plan) to retrieve Albion honour....an interesting what if.
Whilst I will be building my German force up I do have access to a mate's Arab Slaver troops so will be able to get some games in with those as well...so plenty of action to come in time...
Cheers

Beautiful paintjobs, W! The Masai especially look wonderful. Thank you for the continued inspiration!

Love your blog, so well done.
Lots of stuff I am interested in so plan to return.
Thanks for sharing.

Gents,
As part of the "Germans in East Africa" project I've finished up the first group of askaris. More pics on the blog. I'm 'reasonably' happy them though there is room for improvement me thinks...

Great work on those!

Wunderbat Herr Grein!

Really nice work. If you care, I think your photo entitled "Maxim MG on carriage" is actually a photo of one-pounder pom-poms.

"Really nice work."
Thanks Chuck.

It does look like one. The pic was annotated Maxim on carriage and does bear a close resemblance to the pic of a maxim on a carriage below...so it's close for sure...it's hard to really tell the difference...

A google search shows up a good deal of variation when it comes to maxims and carriage mounts...

Gents,
Part II of the Askaris is up on the blog. This time we provide a bit of background at how they are portrayed in Rifles & Spears along with some updated (better) pics from the recently completed second batch.

As always very insightful :)

Gents,
The next post detailing the German East African Askaris is up on the blog.
This post describes the difference between your typical askari and ones organised and trained into what might the termed a 'classic askari' of the colonial era. Pics also of the recently completed DOAG askaris for actions in German East Africa!
Enjoy..feel free to ask any Q's on the rules, thoughts and ideas...whatever you like really :D :D

Love your painting on the DOAG askaris.
Of my many Dark Africa figures,
some of my favorite to paint.

I guess everyone is right. Look at the relative sizes of the ejection port to the body of the weapon. That is WAY bigger than a 0.030" diameter round. But that probably 37mm weapon is apparently built by MAXIM and IS a "machine gun".
Sorry for adding confusion, but I still love your painting.
-
Gents,
In this post we take a look at the White Man Explorers. The post describes their use in Rifles & Spears and a few pics of recently finished figures.

Some lovely rich colours on these models. I'd be interested in what your method is for painting the skin on the Africans. I've got some askaris sat in my painting queue and this will be the first time I've attempted a darker skin tone.

The explorers are excellent.

Thanks chaps,
Globlin, I did a post on painting the Masai which describes my style. It'd probably be easier to read that as it most likely answers a number of questions you're interested in.
https://agrabbagofgames.wordpress.com/2016/02/28/masai-iii/
The key was that there really isn't anything too fancy. A base coat of Brown, army painter Strong dip and then highlight based on the figure and effect the dip produces...more art than science
...usually a highlight of the base color and then a Color tone lighter...be it the Foundry standard Colors or sometimes a bit of a mix of the base coat and highlight...really depends on how it looks to your eye and how much you can be bothered to go back and do the highlight.
Cheers

Thanks H Wanderer, most enlightening. I have been reading through your blog, but hadn't got to that post yet.
It may be a simple method, but it certainly delivers some nice results!
