Title: Some Random Supers
Post by: Cait Sidhe on April 21, 2016, 05:59:06 PM
Well I say random but it's mostly Brotherhood of Mutants as I had started paint stripping and rebasing them a while back but also Hulk, because Hulk. They're all stripped and repainted clix models except maybe Blob who is a clix but I think I just painted over the original paint job.

I've got a few more I've almost finished then it's back to fantasy warbands.

Very nice.  Hulk is great.  Because like you say, Hulk.

Yeah it took me ages to find a decent clix Hulk in terms of both sculpt and size. There's one that looks great in the angle they show it but then when I got it the left arm is like 1/3 the size of the right, I don't even know how that sculpt passed QA.

...and two more added.

Just got Pyro and Quicksilver left to do in this batch now.

Excellent work on the paint jobs! Some of these older Clix are a real paint to deal with.

Two more and the last for now. Pics turned out kinda small but probably for the best. :)

Not sure what the policy is on thread necromancy but got back to Supers now that Super Mission Force is out and didn't see a point in starting a new thread.

Finished Scarlet Witch a while back but never took any pics. Unfortunately I had to do some repairs after she kinda got damaged in the acetone bath and they're not exactly perfect. I'm really not sure why some rare clix start peeling apart after acetone... think it might have something to with glue or something...

Also completed my brotherhood with Mystique who has been missing for too long. I have a clix version which I started painting but it's an utterly dire sculpt so gave up on it and just used a Hasslefree Dionne instead.

Well, when you add such great additions, who could argue with a little Necromancy??

I really like Mystique, great idea using that mini.

Added the Fantastic Four, once again stripped and repainted Heroclix, was never a huge follower but they're an obvious go to for a super team. Human Torch isn't done... wasn't sure how much work to do on him since the clix comes in transparent plastic but I think I'm gonna paint all the flames too which hopefully won't go badly.

Oh those are really nice!!  Really good repaints!

I've not seen that one of Mr. Fantastic before.  I'm really looking for a miniature to represent him (but not in his rubbery state).  Haven't come across anything that appeals to me yet.

I was a huge fan of the FF back when I was a youngster, in the 80's/

Just recently, I've started reading through ALL of their original comics starting with the 1961 release of Issue One.  I'm on Issue 85 or so now.    It's actually a pretty cool way to view what was going on in the world at that time via pop culture.  And how much attitude towards women and the world have changed.

Anyhow, it's really rekindled my interest in the group.

Wow, those are great. The contrast on their clothing is subtle and looks awesome.

I like what you did with Sue Storm's base. The sidewalk effect is cool and adding the drain sells it. I guess I'm saying I like Sue Storm's storm drain  ;)

Cheers folks. Yeah I generally don't go that heavy on the shading contrast which doesn't photograph well as my pics are terrible and it gets washed out even more. Also the faces aren't as derpy if you don't zoom in. :P

The clix are the Ultimate Fantastic 4 versions so I guess technically Reed shouldn't have the grey hair on the temples. I'm not sure heroclix do a Mr Fantastic that isn't in some kind of stretch though I suppose you just need to find a suitable generic dude in spandex and let a paint job do work. :)

I can't take credit for the bases, they're Fenris Games' "Mean Streets" (http://fenrisgames.com/shop#!/Mean-Streets/c/6759467/offset=0&sort=normal) bases.

Lovely FF paint jobs! When I painted my flames for Pyro I did a white base coat and then washes of yellow/orange/red inks. Granted the Human Torch has a whole lot more flames than Pyro.

I decided I wanted a Thanos a few months back but the available minis, either Clix or the OOP Knight Models, are super expensive. Then I saw a job lot on eBay containing two clix parademons and decided they had some potential.

After an acetone bath, some chopping and some sculpting I ended up with a close enough approximation.

...and then a paint job brought it together. Not entirely accurate but close enough and a bit less than the £40+ an actual Thanos clix would cost.   ;D

Abra-Cadaver! Fixed all the images in the thread (photobucket can go get stuffed). Not quite supers themselves but I picked up these East Riding Miniatures Thugs ages ago to use as generic street thugs and muscle. The minis are pretty basic (and super cheap) so I decided to test out GW's Contrast paints with them with mixed results some of which is trying to get used to the best way to use them.

Also realised I never posted the finished Human Torch, photos not great because he's very dark but I went with painting the flames after all.

Honestly, I thought they were sculpts of Ambush Bug on steroids at first glance.

I'm curious, what did you use to strip the original paint from the parademon models?  I have had some difficulty with this in the past but your models look completely stripped and with no loss of detail!

Acetone will strip the paint off of them, as pure as possible (I use 99.5%) as I didn't find nail polish remover to be as good. You need to soak them for a short while, I try not to leave them more than 30 minutes or so at a time as it will soften up the plastic as well and make the figure rubbery, though they'll return to standard firmness after they're left for the acetone to evaporate. Then I just an old toothbrush to scrub the paint off under a running tap.

It's not foolproof though, avoid any hard plastic bits like the flying bases and stuff as they will just dissolve and sometimes it can damage the surface of the mini (such as Scarlet Witch there). I'm not sure why some minis (a minority) are damaged, maybe I left them too long but I can say don't do Groot as it pretty much destroyed mine as all the fine detail peeled off. :(
