Old habits die hard.

They look good, I like the blue 8)

Thanks. I'm a little miffed with the helmets, but I'll cope. Haven't found a good way to clean up white sections which are dipped (and painting over it seems to make it worse). Also I sanded the helmets but two of them ended up with big seam lines when dipped.
I've been collecting a whole lot of 2nd edition metal lately.

Those look cool, and the dirty white suits them, remind me of sand troopers from Starwars.
-
Thanks..sadly white will be a key part of my army, but at least the other helmets will be mostly different colours. There is a lot of junk on my blog about recovering a 2nd edition Eldar from ebay bits, but I know GW stuff isn't that popular on here. lol (and let's be honest - with good reason!)
-
They look good but yeah dip method and white doesn't work well in my experience. I built an Eldar army using a lot of the older Eldar models a few years back. Many of them are IMO still really nice models, despite their age, but because they aren't current they are normally pretty cheap on evilbay. The good thing is stylistically Eldar haven't changed much since the 2nd edition 40K so the old models still look like Eldar even if I use them for 4th edition 40K.
-
Lovely paintwork. I actually quite like the dirty white, as the mighty flip said it's a bit sand trooper like. The seam doesn't seem that bad either - real life equipment often have seams and things.
I don't think it's not GW stuff that's not popular, just the tournament mindset and the more recent editions of 40k/WFB. People seem to love old school GW, whether rogue trader/2nd ed 40k or 3rd WFB.
-
With the white helmets couldn't you dip them up to their neck and not the helmet and then ink the helmet separately? Just a thought. I think they turned out well as is. What color will the guardians be?
-
I debated trying that...but got lazy. I'm also considering using a q-tip with super clean to swab away some of the dip from the helmets after the fact. It doesn't do a whole lot vs. the white primer from Army Painter.
I'm patiently waiting for some paint to show up from Warstore (the only order they've ever failed to ship!). Then I shall reveal the guardians Audrey! :D
-
You'll have 2000pts of Eldar painted before I even get my Genestealer Cult assembled. lol
-
Not at a measly 11 points a figure! :?
-
Here is my first Striking Scorpion squad.
From eBay:

I've never much cared for the crazy green on Striking Scorpions, so I've gone very understated, more suitable to their infiltrating nature. Really chuffed with them, and I'll probably try to knock out the second squad soon.
-
Nice stuff Elbows.
What a change a good paint job does. :)
-
Thanks Mr. Furt.
Oddly I admit I get even more joy out of the rescuing of figures than finding ebay deals for miniatures which have not been touched. Be it rescuing a model from a terrible paintjob, lack of use or just neglect...I'm very much enjoying "restoring" some of these guys so that they can fight on for another 10-20 years before possibly ending up in someone else's hands. It's fun to imagine some of these models will see 30-40-50 years of gaming service. All without a pension!
These sculpts hold up really really well, match the continued Eldar aesthetic and are a real joy to paint.
-
Lovely job. Quite agree there is something satisfying about resurrecting a junk lot on ebay to give them a new lease of life.
-
What a transformation :-* :-*
I agree with Dijit, there certainly is love for old school GW on here and seeing you do these makes me want to get out my old plastic guardsmen again lol
cheers

-
I think a lot of the inspiration for me is not only nostalgia...but being a bit more skilled, and having the money to put together the kind of army I wished I'd had when I was 14. To be able to put together cohesive units with a simple planned paint job etc. I don't have any pictures of my old stuff, but needless to say it was the typical spastic-minded 14 year old collection. I'm moving again in a few weeks so I'm trying to take advantage of the time to get figures painted up (my paint stuff will end up in a box for an undecided amount of time!).
Should be plenty more posted here in the next few weeks.
-

That is a good point, and to be honest, the sculpts of the time are rather good. Crisp and clean with minimal detail and decently proportioned for the most part.
I opened the cupboard that my guard are in and nearly took them out lol
cheers
James
-
I agree...I'm quite shocked at how good many of the sculpts are. They are definitely slight by comparison to modern stuff, but as Eldar I don't much mind. The sculpts are so good that when GW designed new (terrible) Aspect warriors for a later edition, they then reverted and went back to the old "design" language from the RT/2nd edition figures.
If you look at the intermediate Fire Dragons, Striking Scorpions etc. they're an absolute blight on the miniature line. The current resins are either straight from 2nd edition or they did new sculpts based on the old 2nd edition figures. lol
-
Nice work saving these old classics.
Personally I've found it's almost never a good idea to dip the entire figure. Paint the bits that work with the dip - earth colors mostly - dip and then paint the rest.
Ofcourse, this means you can't use the urethane varnish dips. I like the Vallejo ones. Their light gray dip is perfect for whites.
-
These pics didn't come out that well - very dark armour. Regardless, everyone loves/fears/hates Dark Reapers. They're so expensive this'll probably be the sole squad.
Not the best results, but playable and I like the scheme in person (not nearly as dark as it looks!)
-
Don't worry, if they look good on the picture that means they look astonishing in person. Black is always tricky to paint, at least for me.
-
They're actually a very dark bronze, similar to the old GW colour "tin bitz". I snapped a pic with my cell phone which shows the colours a bit more clearly:
Broken Link.
-
oooh that's cool elbows I thought they looked nice (though black) in the first photo but the dark bronze is really nice and unique.
-
Thanks, it was a toss-up between that or dark blue (I think my original Dark Reapers twenty years ago were midnight blue). I just really didn't want to do the usual black.
-
Well I knocked out the first group of guardians and scouts...with, sadly dip that had gone a bit south (even after adding thinner a week ago!). I'm not overly chuffed with them, but they look fine at table height.

Purple headed warrior jokes are welcome. lol
-
LOL I saw first 3 photos and thought ermmm yeah that dip didn't work well .... :D
They look good turning into a very nice looking army.
-
Thanks Jon,
I'm hoping to knock out a few more squads..maaaybe a character or two (I do the old "reward yourself with characters/vehicles after painting up a squad!" technique) in the near future. I ordered a couple of warwalkers and wave serpents. I should have a small 750-1000 pt. force with a character or two I'd think.
A move is coming up, so I'll be disappearing from the painting table for a bit...trying to get a starter force done.
-
Now I know why the Eldar scouts have hoods. To cover the purple helmet when hiding lol. Looks like the white dipped better on the guardians and I like the bone colored weapons.
-
Brilliant! Love the old school eldar :)
-
I finished up another six scorpions, allowing me to field two squads if needed (I was planning on enough minis for one squad of each Aspect but in some cases won several auctions with bits and pieces of minis, so I ended up with twelve).
First up...the auctions:

Then the reclamation.
Altogether now!
And a Farseer for my force, so I can actually put the force on the table now. Love the miniature, not overly enthused with the paintjob, but it will work for me. The hands were painted a light blue/green...which dried to a grey(?).
-
And some more guardians (forcing myself to do as many as I can, the goal is three squads of ten eventually) and my first squad of Fire Dragons. No "before" pictures this time as they merely arrived with bad primer or clean.

-
Wow, these are spectacular :o, I love the way they are coming along!
-
I'm not in 40k, but your's I like.
-
Cracking work 8) 8)
I think the thinner bases really work well :)
cheers
James
-
Thanks guys. I'm pretty happy with the overall progress...even if some of the paint jobs don't blow my skirt up. I just received my first vehicles in the mail and won some Warp Spider auctions finally! Lots more to do...and miles to go... lol
-
Lovely crisp and clean paintjobs.
You have really brought the best out of those models.
I second the point on the bases too, they do look much better.
:-* :-*
-
I've never taken to slottabases...so I knew when I started it'd be changing them over. The issue will be figuring out some of the more dynamic models...may need flying bases or some invention for my Swooping Hawks. Man, the new War Walkers are a mess...I'll have to change them! :?
-
I'm not in 40k, but your's I like.
Not me; I prefer not being 'into 40K', so I must hate any that looks that good. ;)
Doug
-
Very nice. Elbows, I look forward to your lovely eldar giving their souls to Slaanesh when they die on the battlefield :D. Hopefully the game goes well this week.
-
Any word on that? I've read through Clash on the Fringe and it looks okay, I'm also fine with running my 2nd ed. mod as it stands now.
-
More nice stuff. :-*
-
Well, here are the results of a struggle today. Not overly happy with the results, but I shall continue to cope. Modified two war walkers to more resemble 2nd edition models, ended up gluing one of the wing armour pieces on wrong, so I ended up doing all of them wrong! Dipped the driver and white walker pieces only to completely spoil them. Ended up stripping and re-doing them. As long as the weak ball-joint feet stay put they should be stable enough.
Really not a fan of these kits. Didn't realize they were this chunky/mediocre. I'm rethinking my decision to not pick up some older editions instead.
-
Nice conversions of the new warwalkers, but the old ones are still nice ;)
Really like this project. You need some harlequins now ;)
-
@ELBOWS - I agree with you... the older version of the walker was much better (the one with the pilot who has his legs dangling, rather than the later one with the seat). The new ones just don't look nearly as agile.
Mind you, yours are suitably well painted for your project to get away with it :D! (have you shaded the flutes on the end of the plasma cannon?).
-
Good spot, I'll fill them in, and black line the top. I never had the dangly leg old Warwalker, just the seated one, but I really prefer the old look!
-
Loving the look of these. I've got the same figures in a box waiting for paint. They're a mix of my brother's old army back in the 90's and stuff I've randomly gotten since then. If I ever get around to painting them they will definitely be brush-dipped, so its' nice to see just how good they can look painted that way.
Two questions.
-What shade of dip are you using?
-What color of white or grey did you use on the striking scorpions.
-
I use the Army Painter medium shade, the name escapes me (pitter patters across the apartment) but it's obviously Strong Tone.
The Striking Scorpions were based with Army Painter "Necrotic Flesh" actually which turned out to be wonderfully perfect tone for what I wanted. In the desert where I used to work the scorpions were mostly pale (almost translucent) green and would actually glow in night-vision at night. So when I decided I didn't want to do dark or bright green scorpions and I glanced over and saw the Necrotic Flesh (a pale green/beige almost) it was an immediate decision. lol
I'm working on some stuff at the moment, update in a day or two perhaps. Might actually get to put some figures on a table (gasp!) sometime next week.
-
Thanks!
I think I have a very similar color to necrotic flesh in a P3 paint I randomly picked up. I've also got plenty of Minwax Antique Walnut which is close-as-makes-no-difference to AP Strong tone.
Keep up the great work.
-
Great stuff! That army looks excellent. I like the war walkers, though the old metal versions are much better kits ;)
-
Thanks! Here is the latest addition...some extra pew-pew for the force. Two support weapons on grav platforms. I'm not a huge fan of the ray-bans+mohawk guy but I was too lazy to sort out another crew member. There is a lascannon (now brightlance) and a distort cannon (modified using the old d-cannon barrel on a missile launcher body to make a better fit for the weapon.
-
And some saved Warlocks...the dip actually ruined the decals or started to dry them out or something so if they peel off eventually I'll just paint over with normal purple.
-
Some sweet new rides for the fellas:

And as I did a long time ago, ignored the awkward/terrible joke of a flying base...and went with inverted flight pegs drilled/glued into the body as a tripod. Makes the tank look much stealthier in flight and is 10x easier to balance on terrain.
-
Good idea for the tripod 8)
Are you going to weather it at all?
cheers
James
-
Nice additions.
Love those warlocks!
:-* :-*
-
Very nice paintwork - the before and after pic is impressive! 8) 8) 8)
-
Thanks! Probably won't weather because A) I'm lazy, and B) I'm crap at weathering --- and luckily with the Eldar aesthetic I feel I can get away without it! lol
-
lol
Fair enough :)
cheers
James
-
Brilliant idea of the tripod there.
-
The tripod is a great idea!
Maybe you could try inking the panel lines for added pop. A felt tip marker would probably work fine.
The canopy glass looks cool too, how did you do that?
-
The panels lines have been inked with purple ink actually. It shows up pretty well in person. The canopy was simply sprayed blue from behind (mask the front with tape) and then the canopy shell is painted by hand. Keeps the shiny look of the plastic without the cloudy/thick plastic look.
-
Now that I look closer I do see the panel line inking. Probably the photo just doesn't do it justice.
Thanks for the tip about the canopy, I'll have to try it the next time I build something like this.
-
And...more guardians.
I wanted more guardians, and I'll have enough to field an almost all-guardian force if I ever wanted to, or if a story/narrative required it.
I used the lasgun guardians I had on hand to make up some flamers
(https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5b3PjQGMDDU/V1xBK_VPXDI/AAAAAAAACYs/THW23z-OJfEgWmVT4b0XTStFxxyZdjUHACLcB/s1600/Melta%2BGuardians.JPG)
And some meltaguns...
I'm not overly happy with the special weapons but I wanted them easily identifiable from the basic troops so my opponents wouldn't be caught unawares.
-
Looks good. I like the flamer conversion and you can easily identify the special weapons. Are planning on adding wraith guard?
-A
-
Oh hells yes. Short of Exodites/Harlequins/Phoenix Lords I should have everything in the codex at some point in the future. Maaay not do shining spears also.
-
And the Guardian host is done (excluding future jetbike riders, more weapon crews etc.). Finished up the leaders and NCO's etc. I'm a little pissed off as I was really looking forward to these guys and my dip was a bit wonky...didn't work out that well. Oh well, hopefully not many more white models to dip! I can move on.
And the squads assembled...
-
They look great 8) 8) 8)
Group shot of everything so far? :)
cheers
James
-
I think I can manage that sometime. It's getting up there...
-
Wow! These look great all together.
Silk purse from a sow's ear!
-
I've just come across this thread and can I just say, Wow!
You've done a great job of 'salvaging' those figures.
Great paint!
Keep up the good work.
tt43.
-
And here is the "warhost in progress" picture for Jim.
The force overall is perhaps 40-50% complete.
Link broken.
-
Like the Guardians, simple colour scheme yet super effective, cool bases too !!
-
It's the ladies everyone loves to hate!
-
The Banshees look great. The last aspects to paint are Swooping Hawks and Warp Spiders right? Your army is getting to be quite large.
-
Yep...Warp Spiders, Hawks, some more Fire Dragons I have laying around. Then bikes, vypers, a tank or two, some wraithguard, a dreadnought...then some Exarchs, an Avatar, and eventually I'm going to pick up a Wraithknight to use with the old "Towering Destroyer Knight" rules from Armorcast.
Oh, and maybe a few other support weapons (and some extra scouts I have laying around). So the force has a way to go.
-
Beautiful stuff! :-* As a player who loved the Eldar when I still played 40k these are truly a joy to see.
(and yet another to the corus of voices saying that the tripod base on the wave serpent is a great idea!)
-
(https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dBjBvVTvGNk/V21s91BnMLI/AAAAAAAACdE/T3CNpaOGuxkGklMOQtstAVtvM4k0pD19ACLcB/s1600/WarpSpiders.png)
Some Warp Spiders (yes I forgot the Waystones, I'll do those shortly). I tried to mimic a colour scheme from an armored cricket...didn't work out too well. I'm please enough that I shant be stripping them and re-doing them.
-
I really dreaded painting this guy...I can't do flames, and I had no idea what to do, so I just winged it. Came out okay. Now he's done and I don't have to worry.
-
Cool, I like the dark armour combined with the bone elements. Really sinister.
-
Yeah, nice colour scheme!
-
Nice work, really nice colours, the dark browny/bronze bits look great with the bone on top. Reminds me of chocolate !!
-
Trying to shake off some bad vibes recently. Finally picked up the brush. Five more Fire Dragons and my last three Scouts.

-
Those look great, nice tone to the white!
Khaine looks great too!
-
Thanks! I just started a large vehicle project with this force in mind...might take me a little bit to finish. :`
-
I'll need to find a better way to snap pictures of these guys...though I may not bother (really not happy with the results).

-
Some more pictures...ignore the poor paint work.

-
I think the paint work looks great!
I struggle with white a lot but I think you have achieved a nice tone on them.
Are the larger ones conversions? I don't recognize them...
-
The larger ones are the new plastic War Walkers but I chopped a bunch of bits off, trying to make them look like the old War Walkers. They're on an earlier page. I'll probably sell them off as I don't need six War Walkers! Honestly...I love the aesthetic of the old ones but I really mucked up the painting and it's bugging me like crazy. I'm slowly being tempted to create my own using the new plastic kit and some alternate parts (removing the HUGE engine bay in place of something more akin to the old body + shielded weapons).
This is hugely frustrating for me...maybe I need to shut up and simply use the four I just painted. :`
My other mistake was getting impatient while painting them all at once. I didn't pay enough attention to each one as I should have.
-
I certainly do not look forward to facing 4-6 war walkers. Guess I need to retaliate with 4 Carnifex lol.
-A
-
This is really great. I have a few tubs of the Jes Goodwin sculted Eldar. They are my first GW love. NEver got better IMHO. It really makes me want to paint some and play In the Emperors Name. Great job. Cant wait to follow the rest.
I do love that the vehicles caught up to the quality of the figs. And the only thing in the line I like better in the later line is the weapons platforms. Because they match the newer armor better. Keep on keepin on!
-
So I'm actually already starting to assemble bits (in my head) to create a modern/old plastic/metal hybrid Warwalker... God. Dammit. >:(
Here is the army all in one go...
http://myminiaturemischief.blogspot.com/2016/07/july-army-showcase-eldar.html
(will snap an actual army picture sometime later)
-
Deleted due to Photobucket.
-
Quite an army of pansies you have there, man
-
Thanks! Infantry are probably 80% done. Vehicles have a way to go (bikes, vypers, wraithlords, fire prism, maybe a Falcon...possibly another Wave Serpent etc.) And I will probably do a Wraithknight converted over to a "Towering Destroyer Knight" from 2nd ed. armorcast.
-
One of two dreadnoughts I finished. Decided to strip down the other one and re-do it as I didn't care for the way it turned out.

And more...re-painted the entire second dreadnought and finally figured out a scheme I liked for my Swooping Hawks.

Those Hawks work really well. I think I've only ever seen them in bright colours. The muting works a treat 8)

-
The dreadnoughts look good. They look to be the older metal and not plastic. The Swooping Hawks are great. Just reminds me of them hopping over my chaos forces dropping those damnable grenades.
-
The dreads are definitely the old metal chunky ones (plastic magnetized weapons). The Hawks aren't as dark as they appear in the pics but they're definitely a darker tone than the normal bright blue. Might get a little bit more painting in today.
-
Another squad of Dark Reapers (as if I need 10!?). There is a fifth waiting on a missile launcher to arrive. What do people in the US use for going over decals? I never add them normally but these guys needed something to stand out. I know there are coatings people apply to remove shine from the decals etc. - any opinions?
I went for a more traditional colour scheme on these guys. It'll have to grow on me or they'll end up in the Super Clean again! lol
-
This army is coming together really nicely.
:-* :-*
I had a 2nd edition Eldar army back in the day so it is really nice to see this come together.
8)
-
I keep thinking I'm nearing completion...and then realize I'm not.
Still to do:
-More support platforms
-Bikes (likely Shining Spears and a Farseer or Warlock)
-Vypers
-Falcon or two
-Wraithguard
-Exarchs
-Another Warlock or two on foot
-Possibly some Eldar Pirates
-Wraithknight to convert into a old Revenant Titan (or Towering Destroyer Knight)
I'm working through my models pretty quickly though. Just dipped my first Phoenix Lord but ya'll don't get to see him until he's done! lol
-
All looking pretty good, but you seem to have forgotten to attach flags to the barrels of the Hawks' rifles...
;)
-
I wish I had the skill/patience to add a bunch of banners to these guys, but alas they store easier without them...and I'm lazy.
Speaking of lazy: Karandras.

Continuing alternate colours since I really never cared for green/bright green colours. I don't know if I've ever used a Phoenix Lord (I think I had Maugan Ra back in the day...) so this guy will mostly be serving as a normal Scorpion Exarch since I'm not overly fond of those basic models. He appears much nicer at table-top height than up close, but overall I'm happy with it. Also fits much better on a 30mm base than the 25's (the Phoenix Lords are large figures and tend to hang over the edges of 25mm bases).
-
I "started" a Warlock on a jetbike which ended up being a few hours and completing it. More on the blog as always.

Love it,always liked where warhammer stuff was used for scenery on primitive 40 k worlds. So yours is similar.
-
Hah! Heck I don't even own any 40K scenery yet. Just regurgitating Old West stuff and I had some barrels laying around and those wonderful shipping crates from some models I bought a couple years ago. After the army is essentially done it'll be time to look into some actual "sci fi" terrain to use. lol
-
Well it's official...I can't fit my army comfortably into a camera shot now. I suppose that's a good thing. Update shot after all of the recent progress:

That is one serious looking army you have there now, sir.

And those WD covers look great.
Your figures look great in amongst that scenery.

The army looks very nice. You have gotten a lot done in just a few months.

-
It's already an army to be very proud of... excellent work (and in such a short time :o ).
What else have you got to get done? If it's lots of guardians GOOD LUCK! :)
-
So I decided to build a small Space Wolves force as an opponent for my Eldar (even if only for photos!). I started with the wonderful Terminator Chaplain I picked up a couple of weeks back.
This will be a 2nd edition Space Wolf force with very minimal "wolfiness". None of the modern ridiculousness, no werewolf crap. Paint scheme will be identifiable if slightly different.

I dislike all-black miniatures, so even the Chaplain gets away with only a shoulder pad to indicate his office.
-
Not bad, good choice to not make him all black, although personally I would have followed the typical chaplain uniform variation as mentioned in the compendium which is black skull helmet, black torso, skull shoulderpads, and typical spacewolf grey arms and legs. Still nice to A. See a spacewolf Chaplain, and B. not see him in all Black :D
-
Yeah, this will be a Space Wolf force which will bug Space Wolf afficianados I'm afraid. I'm painting them up as I wish...but then Space Wolves have more freedom that way with Great Companies etc. lol
-

I thought the WolfPriests were the SpaceWolf equivalent to a chaplain. IronPriest-> techmarine, RunePriest->Librarian.
-
I thought the WolfPriests were the SpaceWolf equivalent to a chaplain. IronPriest-> techmarine, RunePriest->Librarian.
yes but before spacewolves became space Vikings they were just another chapter of space marines, and actually had the usual chaplains, medics, techpriests and librarians. and for a very short period there was even an official paintscheme for spacewolf chaplains
-
Yeah, they're all priests in 2nd edition, but the codex is still in the mail so I just called him a Chaplain.
Reverting back to the pointy eared panzees...another alternate paint scheme for a Phoenix Lord (again he'll probably serve mostly as a simple Dark Reaper exarch).
eBay received as a poorly painted classic paint scheme, the one everyone has seen hundreds of times.

Alternate scheme. Again, amazed at how well this miniature has held up over time.
-
That new colour scheme works a treat 8)

James
-
Thanks Jim. I basically wanted to completely invert the normal scheme and it seemed to work out well!
-
Some lovely rescuing of old miniatures in this thread. Beautiful painting all 'round.
-
Thanks! That's actually been the most fun/rewarding part. Sadly I forget to take pictures of some of my stuff when it shows up from eBay because I'm too anxious to throw it in the stripping solution... :-X
-
Brilliant!
The new subtle scheme works really well and makes him much more sinister and realistic.
:-* :-*
It is scary just how close your new Eldar army reminds me of my old with its components.
I think it is a good thing that I have already put together a small skirmishing force of pirates together already or I may have been tempted to emulate your efforts.
Of coursse, now you have gone and started flashing old skool Space Wolves around, which is another story entirely.....
;)
-
It better remind you of your components...I've painted damn near everything from the codex! lol I'm even kinda/sorta considering doing some pirates at the very end.
-
Finished up a Rune Priest...and I'm not loving it. May end up re-doing him in the future.

So many classic great models, brought to life with a great brush job! :-* :-*
I love your collection, elbows!
Bravo! :)
-
Thanks, Maxx! I'd invite you to a game, but I don't have plans to visit Italy anytime soon! lol

Much better with those little touch-ups. Now there's no need to re-do it.

Looks good to me; great stuff :)

After working on a bunch of Old West stuff I went back to my box of Eldar. This time a couple of exarchs. One was new, the other was an ebay rescue.
-
Something I've been eagerly awaiting...my Wraithguard! Since the aesthetic is very very similar to the old metals I went with the easier-to-acquire/build plastic set. I was planning 2-3 squads of these guys (though they can squad up to 10!). I was a bit miffed with the kit. Large sprue shift, poor location of gates (inside of curves etc.)..and some parts are simply a pain in the ass.
All in all, I didn't like building them and that'll probably put me off doing another squad any time soon. I'm stoked with the result though.

Nice progress.
Those new Wraithguard do seem to blend in fairly well with the old style.
Nice result.

As for those Exarchs: Wow!
That is a great result using wash.
Those old classics are still really nice figures and you have done them justice.

Thanks! Plenty more on the way...kinda. I've got my shining spears completely stalled due to lack of colour scheme. :?

So after being gifted a couple of old dreadnoughts...this happened:

-
Wasn't that a suggested conversion from Citadel Journal? Its the old jetbike part from the Harlequins, right?
-
Some nice popping painting there (and that face always scared me).
-
That's a lot of eldar.
My favourites would have to be the rangers and all those guardians. They look great all together.
-
Thanks, and yeah it's an old common conversion. I don't remember where I first saw it, but it's pretty common.
-
I knocked this out today...haven't been motivated at all to paint lately. Don't much like the new kit if I'm honest (some nice pieces but the turret is comically big). Magnetized to make a Falcon if needed. I vastly prefer the look of the older Falcon and the old Fire Prism.

-
The fire dragon and banshee look great. I actually like the Wolf Priest but my memory is failing me. Do Space Wolves actually mark their "librarians" with any librarian blue indicators?
-
Nope. That's precisely why I thought a simple helmet mask would be a nice nod. I only painted two figures and ditched the idea of an alternate Space Wolves force. lol
-
Those new falcons really aren't an improvement on the old ones are they? But great paintwork none the less.
-
The vehicle upgrade bits are a nice touch and I like that you can do some deathspinners as well - but the turret is huge and sit really far back. I think it would look better if I had the Wave Serpent extension on the tank etc. It's just comically large for the normal Falcon (the body is still the old kit). Oddly Falcons are tough to come across at most of the online shops. I'll probably do up a proper Falcon and call it for armour.
-
And here it is. The final unit of 2016. I figured it was good to start and end with Dire Avengers (more to come next year!).

6388 points in 2nd ed. Eldar (without additional wargear cards etc.). All models equipped WYSIWYG. The plans for next year are to finish the army with jetbikes (already building them), some Vypers, maybe a Falcon or two, a few more support weapons and eventually a Wraithknight converted into a 2nd ed. Armorcast-stats vehicle of some sort.
-
:o :o :o
That is some amazing output, to a consistently good standard.
:-* :-*
You should be very happy with that lot!.
:D
-
Thanks, Mason!
-
Keep going dude. Love seeing your work on these.
-
Yeah - pretty impressive. Nice colours tying the army together.
-
I think it's one of the few things which makes painting Eldar relatively easy. The main army is X, Y and Z colours, and then you get to take a break with the Aspect warriors each having their own scheme. Add to that the availability of pirates/corsairs/exodites/harlequins and the paint options are pretty endless.
-
Repainting and rebasing onto nice flat bases AN ENTIRE ARMY. 8)
I think I need to create a Hall of Fame on my blog.... o_o

Consistent basing for the win. :D
-
The army looks great! It has been enjoyable seeing the army grow and I look forward to seeing the jet bikes.

And yet...more. Since I started this army in April, I'll be posting up an actual "year" progress shot when the time comes.

The first half of my Pirates (they may double as bodyguards since I've decided I'll be doing a White Seer as part of my army too...)

Great stuff, love that purple 8) 8)

-
Love those old Guardians/Leaders/Whatever - have most of them, some in more copies. I don't think I ever got the guy with the mask on the helmet, though.
-
I agree. There were loads of Eldar models with some serious character, and not all goofy and silly, but some beautiful models. They've lost almost all of that with modern guardians unfortunately. I have a few more on the way and there is a giant range of metal bodies I'll never get (the ones with the plastic arm sprues). A ton of coats, helmets, plumes, baggage, alternate weapons, etc. I actually didn't like the masked fella until I ham-fisted my way through the paint scheme and it all worked. I debated not using him.
The nice thing about 2nd ed. pirates for the Eldar is that it allows you to use up any remaining metals you have sitting around since they can all be armed with a variety of gear (it doesn't have to match and you have very few limitations). I had been iffy about making pirates for a long time, but then I looked an realized I had 10-15 spare metal guardians/heroes/characters just sitting in baggies. Also these guys will be useful if I choose to play any other sci-fi skirmish games since they're a little less 40K-strict. I'm actually tempted to get a few aspect warriors and put them in matching colours so I can run a weird Eldar space crew.
-

I always thought those old 'characters' were the inspiration for some of the later aspect warriors - especially Dire Avengers and Striking Scorpions will go well with those, I think :)
-
Another lovely addition. I like the idea of adding a pirate crew. The eldar with the mask has always been a favorite of mine.

Another batch of pirates, and a squad of Terminators (going with a small generic Space Marine opposition force, in place of the Space Wolves). In 2nd ed. it's pretty easy to build marine forces since they're quite expensive.

No particular chapter, just a design of my own.
-
This is an attempt at my version of a "White Seer". It's something Gav Thorpe made up (I believe) in his novels, but the idea is pretty neat; a sect of Eldar psykers who are dedicated to the transport and destruction of Chaos-tainted relics/items, etc. They're trained heavily for resisting the effects of such items, essentially serving the Black Library. If I use her in 2nd ed. she'll simply become a Warlock Master.

(yes I know the female Dark Eldar head doesn't scale properly with the oddly huge (for an Eldar) hand...but I'll ignore it! One of my favourite middlehammer Farseer sculpts.
-
Yes, they're terrible (I mean, really bad) but, why not some wonderful metal Shotgun scouts?

Yes, they're terrible (I mean, really bad)
??? ??? ???
-
Shotguns in 2nd ed. 40K are pretty crap...even worse when given to BS3 scouts. They suffer a -1 to hit over 4" (max range of 18"). Their only "benefit" is a chance to knock someone down or use the silly little 1" template. In reality they're better off using their bolt pistols in almost every situation. BUT...who cares. Shotgun scouts. lol

Oh, that way - I have no recollection of any 40K rules.

More opfor for the Eldar. My as-of-yet unnamed Space Marine chapter receives more scouts and a Chaplain. I'm not a big fan of the Chaplain but I hate all-black paint schemes to start with.

The marines are a departure from what I was expecting when I saw that you had made another post. If you don't have a name yet have you decided on which chapter their geneseed comes from? Black is a hassle but it is a little easier if you come out of blue rather than gray.
-
Since it's a small opfor army for the Eldar I'll be using the Ultramarines codex from 2nd, so a fairly generic chapter of sorts. Right now my folder for their pictures is simply labeled "Sand smurfs". lol That'll put some fear into the xenos.
"Stand and be judged by the faithful Emperor's Sand Smurfs!"
-
Sand Smurf Apothecary...
Not enthused with this guy (wasn't my favourite choice of sculpt but it's the one I won on eBay). My dip is slowly thickening so it's becoming harder and harder to use and I'm being stubborn about not picking up a new can.
Also, the Apothecary is a bit crap in 2nd ed., but whatever. Jump pack like the Chaplain (which sadly uses up his only Wargear slot)
-
Very nice nonetheless.
-
Marines don't need medics. But he looks fine to me.
I do love the little heart on his belt. They call him Lovey Smurf behind his back. lol
-
He has another heart on his shoulder pad...you could say he wears his heart on his sleeve? (Waka waka!)
-
And a scratch-built Techmarine. A little wobbly because of the metal pack (even on the larger 30mm base).

Some more opfor...I was reminded why marines are not my primary army. I'm already tired of painting them!

Some more opfor...I was reminded why marines are not my primary army. I'm already tired of painting them!
I hear you. Marines are boring, at best, and a real pain when overloaded with detail. Those termies are from before the insanely OTT sculpts, but I not very fondly remember trying to paint up a Dark Angels force years ago...
I think your Sand Smurf scheme works quite well - like gold/yellow squared with blue, but more 'subdued' and 'gritty' as befitting the setting.
The marines are going to look great when placed on the table with you Eldar - I really envy your ability to stay focussed like this, I sometimes struggle to paint 10-12 members of the same unit/warband without veering off :D
-
Well, unfortunately my commitment is heavily based on an extraordinarily long unemployment...so it's often the only thing I have during the day to concentrate on (and at least feel like I accomplished something!) lol
My Eldar are close to done (outside of bikes and a few more vehicles...maybe some Phoenix Lords). The marines are for pictures, play-testing our 2nd ed. revision ideas and I like to be able to "host" games, so if someone comes over and wants to run some 40K --- I'll be able to throw down a 1500 point force of marines.
The big goal for 2017 is probably terrain. Sci-fi for 40K, possibly Necromunda, etc.
-
Can't wait to see it happen.
-
Yes, I like to see some of your terrain and it would probably be more fun than painting more marines. Right about where you are is where most of my marine armies ended :) .
-
Great stuff ---- I love 2nd ed, and I love the old metal termies ;)
-
Since I've no major love for marines, the force will be relatively small (I've one more squad of scouts to do - then maybe an assault squad and a few vehicles). Though once it's playable, as always - I'll randomly add things if I stumble across them for cheap.
I forgot to add this guy here - a plastic Librarian with jump pack (notice a theme here?)
Don't get too excited about terrain - I suck at it. It'll mostly be MDF stuff - though the table design will be pretty fun. (basically platforms over an acid ocean, meaning the fighting will be across platforms, walkways etc.)
-
Sounds like a really cool table concept. I don't have much experience building terrain so I might impress more easily than you think :). Look forward to checking it out.
-
Elbows, your painting is always top notch. But what did you do with that Librarian's hand. It's spectaucular!!! Have you been downloading skills from Golden Demon participants in your sleep or something? My gob has truly been smacked!
-
(blows the dust off)
Well, as some of you probably noticed I haven't posted any painted Eldar in quite some time. I took a small break to do the marines in this thread...then abandoned that completely and went onto a Chaos Nurgle inspired force (over in the other thread). Admittedly I also repainted half of my Old West terrain...built an entire Mordheim table, etc. So I've been busy but my Eldar army hasn't had anything new for a while. I'm a few models shy but really the army is essentially done. So just occasional bits from hereon out.
Enter my nemesis. I enjoyed putting a unique colour scheme on Karandras. Then I enjoyed doing that on Maugan Ra. So when a bunch of metal Phoenix Lords showed up on eBay I grabbed them up. Decided "these are easy - I'll do them all!". Enter Fuegan the despoiler.
I assembled the model, primed it and painted it. Hated it. Stripped it.
I then assembled the model and primed it again. Painted it. Hated it. Stripped it.
I then assembled, primed and started painting it again. Hated it. Luckily I set it aside for a day this time.
I came back to it and ham-fisted my way through it. This time I finished it and I don't hate it with a burning passion, so I'll let him stay. In the process of dipping him I chipped his head and his stupid firepike leaked dip all over my desk and my damn hands. He was going down fighting. I've never been so close to melting down a pewter miniature before. He better make it up to me on the tabletop. I expect him to incinerate some of Audrey's sexy new Alpha Legion sometime.

-
I love what you've done here. I can't believe I missed this thread! I'll have to go through it more thoroughly later.
To be honest when I first clicked on this thread I expected to see some apes dressed all in black throwing around some shuriken
-
Well, your persistence has certainly paid off as he now looks great.
8) 8)
Lets hope he proves worth all the bother when he hits the table.
:D
-
About a year late to the party, but a massive hats off to you, good sir! that is a really impressive army, and I love it.
In fact, I have had many, many of the minis you have resqued lying in storage for nearly a decade, for a project/army not unlike yours. I'm planning on creating an Eldar pirate army, because that was one of the first Eldar forces I ever saw. Some things leave a lasting impression I suppose... :D
As it is, I've assembled a small warband for use in Shadow Wars from my stash of old Eldar, and I'm stoked to get to painting them. Time being the ever limiting factor of course... ::) I'll be going for a classic Prince Iriel(?) scheme; grey/blue/black armor and yellow helmets with tiger stripes. Hopefully starting out small will keep my enthousiasm up, but I don't expect I'll be able to finish an army of such epic proportions as yours!
Your army certainly makes for a wonderful bit of inspiration and motivation though :)
By the way; do you already have matching purple and white dice for them? ;)
-
Pfftt...do I have matching dice...
Chessex purple/white dice weren't cutting it, so I ordered some custom dice last week with my craftworld logo on them. ETA a few weeks.
-
lol
I wasn't worried; just double checking. You're the holistic master after all... :D
-
Some pew-pew-pew for the Eldar. I attempted to mash together some metal Shining Spear bits w/ the new jetbikes. Without a lot of heavily modeling...it failed. But they're usable (just not grabbing the handlebars, etc.). I've wanted some of these for a while, so I'll keep them around unless I find a reasonable way to replace them.
:-I

And Asurmen...shows up quite awful in the picture but looks plenty fine for gaming.

-
Great additions to the force, sir.
I love that Asurmen figure and you have certainly done it justice.
:-* :-*
-
Love those colour choices. The Burgundy/purple hue on Asurmen is beautiful. And the mustard yellow on the jetbikes...like a 70s sofa, but in a good way.
-
I thought the exact same thing on the jetbikes :D 70's are so in right now! (I mean look at that horse hair)
-
I like the colour choices and overall effect a lot.
great Asurmen!

Compiling my Chaos stuff here - I lost most of my Photobucket account so I've re-done all the links here direct from the blog. So here is the Chaos force I'm building up to fight my Eldar.

-
Very cool, but man.. where did you got that many Skitari helmets :)
-
The Terminator conversions are great. How did you open up the space for the helmets? Iit took ages for my Alpha Legion one (http://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.co.uk/2017/05/alpha-legion-terminator-work-in-progress.html (http://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.co.uk/2017/05/alpha-legion-terminator-work-in-progress.html)).
-
I love your Alphalegionary Smurf!
But Skitarii helmets are much smaller and those termies could be Heresy era with head as a separate part.
-
Ultra - the terminators I used are the Tartaros pattern models from the Horus Heresy "Burning of Prospero" boxed game. They come with a hollowed out section where a normal head is mounted. The Skitarii helmets are also slightly smaller than a normal space marine, so they mount easily inside.
-
That explains it. Thanks.
-
I must have missed the Tartaros Terminators before. They look lovely, but in a nasty beat up way. So where is your 2nd reaper autocannon? ;)
-Audrey
-
I had one available, and chose not to use it. Because I'm not like you Audrey...I'm not like you... lol
-
Been working on equipping/bulking out the Chaos force. Added five more marines (they need another spray to matte some missing areas) and a Chaos Lord w/ jump pack.

Death Guard and nice do not go together I know, but I hope you know what I mean.

Those cultists are good.

Very nice work on everything :)

Been looking for this guy for a while, and found him in an oddly named eBay auction. Wanted an excuse to use him with my Chaos guys so he'll serve as a kind of champion for 2nd ed. or a proper warpsmith or whatever they call Chaos techmarines.

A lovely pair.
-
(slap) HOW RUDE!
-
I somehow miss this thread. Great job all around Elbows. Your productivity is astonishing.
-
Bring forth the tankening!
So...disclaimer. I'm not overly chuffed with this post. I decided to add more weathering/grime to my tanks using the dip and a brush. My dip had thickened a bit and didn't pool flat, leaving some brush marks and drips I'm not super excited about. However, they now better match the rest of my force. I've also added some magentized bits to make one of my Rhinos into a Vindicator!
New, grimier Predator:

New, gunnified Vindicator stand-in:

On the Eldar side of things, my custom Chessex dice showed up today for my Yderis Craftworld!

(and I may have placed an order for Chaos matching dice...)
-
I salute your dedication :)
-
Excellent tanks! I am a fan of the "newer" grimier look and I always love magnetized bits to make models more versatile. I'm looking forward to seeing them in person soon.
-A
-
Yeah, as you know since I dip everything I was holding off trying to figure out how to do it to the tanks. In the future I'll set up a small cup/glass and mix the dip w/ mineral spirits to really thin it down before attacking an entire vehicle. When you see them in person you'll see a handful of places where it just didn't pool and left some streaks from the brush - annoying...(grinds teeth)
That or I need to find a way to dip the entire vehicle...into a tiny can...hmmm...
-
Great stuff all round :)
cheers
James

Finished some kit-bashed Plaguemarines. Overall, not very happy with the way the colour scheme turned out, or the heads (which are great casts but look waaaay too big).

I like them ,they look suitably creepy.
-
Wait, 8 Plague Marines :o blasphemy!
I think they look great. Though they will all be consumed by the great devourer anyhow...something like that :D.
-A
-
Pfftt...7 plus a Chaos Icon..separate units :d
-
A Vyper done up in the colours of the pirates I did earlier. Will have a small side-faction painted up as the pirates (who may or may not escort the White Seer). While they use all the same rules, it'll give me an additional story line element. Will probably re-do some of my war walkers in the scheme and perhaps a gun platform or two will be added. Trying to keep it to lightweight vehicles and units which could actually get through a warp portal.
And my camera hates beige on white photographs, so that's all you get.
-
Looks good to me :)
Just needs a spirit walker for support and you are golden :) ;)

Found a Falcon new in box on eBay for a shockingly good price so I snatched it up...and spent today painting it. Going with an opposite scheme to my other tanks which have been primarily purple w/ white.

A small package from Chessex showed up today - more custom dice.

-
Question. How many times do you typically use each set of dice?
And going back to your thread from a while ago - do you have matching underwear for each army that you wear?
(I'm just jealous that you have the motivation to go to this level of detail.)
-
Eh, just depends. As it stands right now I'm playing 40K maybe once a week (if that). A set of the dice w/ a custom '6' facing is not super expensive (about $30 for 30 dice). It's as easy as emailing Chessex, sending them an image and poof, they mail you dice in 3-4 weeks. It's not much motivation. Like I said in the holistic gaming thread, I love me some little things which make gaming a bit more attractive or "cool". I'm a big fan of crisply designed cheat sheets, quick reference tables, custom dice, etc. Trust me, I'm still fucking awful at gaming. :D
-
You didn't answer the question about your underwear dude. :D
(I have ordered custom dice from Chessex in the past, I agree it is cool.)
-
You've inspired me, I'm going to start a wargaming line of underwear! lol
I'd hate to imagine what the Nurgle ones would be... :D
-
I was trying to make some assault marines for the Lead Legion but I abandoned that and simply turned these guys into my Chaos Assault Marines. The Lead Legion will get something else at some point. Read about my anger and woes on the blog...

-
They're rather nice 8) 8) 8)
-
Urgh. Just happened to me with some resin tanks when the tray they were on flipped.
These guys look awesome though.
-
Great stuff, mate.
They look just fine and dandy and will probably see much more use as an official part of your Chaos force as well.
8) 8)
And you did a great job rescuing them after the 'Drop-site Massacre'.
;)
-
Thanks...you'd think the jump packs would have activated and landed safely. Apparently not...buncha half-ass twits... >:(
-
Very cool stuff! :-*
-
Thanks, Corso.
I did up a Terminator version of my currently nameless Chaos Lord (still vastly prefer the power armour and jump pack...but, ya know..options?). I had to kit-bash a powerglove mounted stormbolted when I realized I didn't have a way of producing a left-handed Storm Bolter (and far be it from me to change his hands!).
And then I took a crack at creating some weird agent alternate Chaos Obliterators. Not very enthused with the end result, but they'll serve until I decide to eBay them and re-do them eventually. I don't know why I went with skulls for faces...or why I painted them weird. Just didn't end up looking the way I had in my mind.
I'm closing in on being done with the Chaos force...been working on some Eldar behind the scenes as well. A few more vehicles, maybe one more squad, but unknown.
-
Maybe because it was silent in the library?
-
Maybe because it was silent in the library?
lol
And I quite like them as they are too - although the Chaos Lord (in his daily and Sunday suits) is even more brilliant 8) 8) 8)
-
I'll run them for a bit, but I think if I could make a small profit on them and I'd just dump them on eBay. I spent a long time looking at Google images for Chaos Obliterators and I dislike every single version I've seen...including mine. :D I think a Version 2 will occur eventually.
-

I think yours are much better than the more organic GW ones. Perhaps the whole Obliterator concept needs a radical rethink; but I still like these guys.
-
I was originally going to do the skulls in a metallic (like a grim faceplate). I'd consider swapping more normal heads in there, but the Tartaros is a model where you need to put the head inside before gluing on the top, so I don't know if I could still do that now.
-
You are never satisfied ;). I think your obliterators look fine. At least you have models so you try them out and see if you like fielding them. The ones you made are still far better than the GW ones.
-A
-
What does it matter to you Audrey? I'll just be scooping them into a bin when they meet anything you put on the table. lol
-
For what it's worth I like them. I find a lot of the Chaos stuff overly fussy but the simplicity of yours is refreshing.
-
Great thread. Very impressed with the weathering on your marines.
-
Slickety, slickety...a wild Jain Zar appears. Not in love with the colour scheme, but too lazy to re-paint (I re-painted Fuegan three times...ugh)

Hot on the heels of the lady Eldar comes a very quick turn-around kit-bash from an eBay sourced Kurtha Sed model. He's supposed to be a Dark Disciple (Chaos Chaplain?) but he may serve as any number of roles (psyker, lord, champion). Quite like the result. Armed with a combi-plasma and a power maul.

Nice additions, especially with that lovely vivid blue.

-
Yes, the colour scheme is really effective.
-
Thanks guys. I keep telling myself I'm close to finished with my Eldar...and I have some more pirates to paint, another Vyper just showed up and I bought another eight Swooping Hawks for a steal...UGH! (oh...and some Daemon princes for my Chaos...GAAAH)
-
Wait princes, as in multiple? How many does an army really need :D
You need to make some storm guardians for the interior ship game we are going to have.
-A
-
I'm actually considering trying to do a Storm Guardian squad (probably under the guise of pirates), but I'll have to track down the rare minis). I'm using some of the undead crypt flayers(?) or something to make a Daemon Prince with wings and one without. Going to attempt to modify them lightly and use plaguebearer heads on them in place of the usual ones ---- see if I can get away with it.
-
So I decided to make a couple of Daemon Princes (needed a bit more "Chaos" in my Chaos force). This is the first one. Converted out of a simple Undead Fantasy kit.
-
The Crypt Horror conversion worked out quite well. It looks scarier than the stock GW daemon prince.
-A
-
That's because the GW version looks like an Amusement Park ride decoration... lol
-
Nicely done!
-
And here's his winged brother...also a fan of the gratuitous.

I like that; very effective use of washes on the wings.
-
Thanks, it's fun to do ghoulish slimy evil things; particularly when you're a dip-aholic such as myself. As usual it settled a bit too much in a few areas, but for something which took about 20 minutes to paint, I can't complain.
1) Prime
2) Paint loincloth and wings, eyes, and some bone spurs.
3) Mix red w/ sepia tone and splash/flick gore
4) Dip (well in this case applied with a brush because it doesn't fit in the can!)
5) Paint and finish base.
Fun to paint stuff like this on occasion, a massively stark contrast to the clean and crisp Eldar stuff.
-
And a few more Swooping Hawks with Exarch (dark minis always photograph poorly on my white background - I'll have to remedy that sometime).

In my un-ending quest for war walkers I don't hate...I made these two using remnants from two of my previous war walkers I painted (yep, I've gone through...three iterations so far).
Robotech parts were used in the making of this film.

I also did another Vyper I'm not exactly stoked about.

The revised war walkers work quite well. Personally I like them better than an Eldar hanging off the front.

-
Loving the Walkers dude ! They look totally Xeno.
-
Thanks! I just placed them on the table with the other stuff and it all seems to fit...aesthetically at least. I may trot them out tonight.
-
A new dreadnought (in plastic this time!)

Also did an article on building the Rhino-Russ that I use for my Chaos Space Marines:
https://myminiaturemischief.blogspot.com/2017/10/hobby-tips-building-rhino-russ-part-one.html
Just 41 simple steps! lol
-
Loved the conversion article on your blog! The rhino-russ has a fine looking silhouette. The eldar walker conversion here looked great too.
-
Thanks, Horrid. The Rhino-Russ is something I really like - I think the shape is much cooler than a normal one!
-
That is really useful.
Thanks.
The Regult based walker is very good.
-
Yeah - thanks for sharing.
-
Loving the dread. Very crisp and sharp looking.
Really like the Rhino-Russ more.
I always like to see conversions to the basic vehicles like apc's and tanks, and this is a two-for.
Grimm
-
Thanks guys. While doing my third Rhino-Russ I chose to build a proper gunbox for the Vindicator so it would stand apart more on the table...check it out. (more on the blog as always)

Looks brutal. But the noise in one of those things must be a nightmare!
-
Just slightly loud...of course it's also GW sized so the hatch on the gunnery box is directly behind the recoil mechanism of the gun :D
-
Just slightly loud...of course it's also GW sized so the hatch on the gunnery box is directly behind the recoil mechanism of the gun :D
Is there a hatch to throw out the two halves of the gunner?
-
so the hatch on the gunnery box is directly behind the recoil mechanism of the gun
Yeah - noticed that. At least there's a hatch further forward for the tank commander and his sword. :P
-
Luckily there is a twin-door hatch on the back side of the box...so body parts and shell casings can be excused from the premises with ease.
-
And we're set...well, once the final Predator bits arrive.

Got my three Rhinos --- one can be run as the Vindicator, and two are magnetized for Predator conversions (missing the "bits" to make a second Predator at the moment). Should cover my basic vehicle bases for now.
-
Gotta love those Rhino-Russ.
:-* :-*
Is there a hatch to throw out the two halves of the gunner?
All marines have to spend time as a gunner before they are allowed to travel as passengers in Rhinos.
Makes it easier to squeeze ten in the APC that way....
-
Thanks, Mason!
The Eldar gained a Fire Prism today to flesh out their armour...because Eldar tank companies are a thing?

I also whipped an old busted Warlock into a new Bonesinger for my army:

And I purchased and painted up some better weapon options for the Rhino-Russ (and the 2nd predator)

--- Just received some sponsons so I can almost field two Predators and a Vindicator now.

"Barkeep, who's the fella with the stelar moustache?"
"That'd be Khyrum Saal..."
This is Khyrum Saal, the Chapter Master of my Wandering Sons renegade chapter. I'll be filling out the fluff and lore when I start chronicling our narrative campaign for 40K soon. Short version? He's a gruff (and rather large) Chapter Master of the Wandering Sons - a chapter who was originally sent on the Abyssal Crusade, deep into the Eye of Terror. Stranded on a distant world inside the Eye, the Wandering Sons were saved when the secretive lodge made a pact with Chaos.
Khyrum wasn't such a fan, but saw it as a chance to return to the Imperium and seek answers and not a small amount of vengeance. He's at odds with the portions of the Wandering Sons who've taken more interest in the tainted Chaos teachings. He's slain several tainted marines who challenged his position...so there's an uneasy truce between the more twisted types and Khyrum and his less-plagued brothers.
I've got a rules datasheet for him which I'll post when it's finalized - want to test him out a few times.

Excellent.

Oktos, Exalted Champion of Chaos.
Oktos represents the head of the "true believers", putting him squarely at odds with Chapter Master Khyrum Saal. His plague marines, cultists, and fellow believers paint their armour in homage to the Death Guard, still maintaining Legionary traditions such as the lodge. It remains a mystery why Oktos and his believers have not used their Chaos allies to overthrow Khyrum Saal and take full control of the Wandering Sons.

I think you rushed your first batch, but the second batch came out a lot better. Might be the photography, I'm not sure.
-
lol
Same models, thankfully.
-
The last models of 2017 most likely - some scraps of units sitting on the desk. A few Dark Reaper exarchs (based on the awful 2nd version models), and some more scouts to fill out squads, etc.
-
Lovely painting.
As an aside - I thought the Eldar would be a race into ergonomics and OH&S concerns, those Reaper launchers look unwieldly to aim with and are sure to cause back issues. Unless you're fighting in low-G environments. Anyway, I digress, lovely painting.
-
Oh, I agree. I just needed Exarchs with an alternate weapon - and that's all the bits I had laying around. I don't much like the models themselves, but I don't use anything on the table unless I have proper models for them. I fully agree with the poor aesthetics. Maybe I'll fix them in the future. :D
-
Great work! :)
-
Yay more Eldar! The new additions look nice. I don't remember ever seeing those Dark Reaper exarchs. It certainly isn't the best miniature. Well better than the original Nagash lol.

Clearly the big bulgy bit is the anti grave suspensor unit making them as light as a feather. In fact the handles don't need to take any weight they are purely to move the pointy end around until it is pointing in the correct direction :)
-
The first painted model of 2018 (done some terrain recently, but no actual models). I struggled painting this guy simply due to detail and difficulty seeing what I needed to paint...but I'm happy enough. A second Chaos Warpsmith (Techmarine) from the old metal Iron Priest model.
-
And the slow crawl continues. I've finally written up a plan to "finish" my Chaos force, so I'm trying to get there...maybe 35-40 models out. The Eldar will be a continual project and may never end.
Some new aspiring champions and lascannon marines - because I've found myself undergunned a bit lately.
-
I recently expanded my assault marines to 14 in order to field two units of seven (praise Nurgle and whatnot!). I had four marines finished but no packs, so I finally received and painted up some Maxmini jump packs. They're larger than the other packs I've used, but they fit in well --- they're also friggin' lovely and I wish I had used more of them. Might be something worth retrofitting onto characters in the future.

Some lovely new additions to the Chaos force, Elbows.
Love the jump packs and the Iron Priest.
:-* :-*
Quite a sizeable force you have there now.

Splendid :)
The 'techpriest' works particularly well.
-
Thanks. I'm really diggin' how the Chaos Marines are turning out, and it's fun to have a completely different force than pretty much anybody else. I am planning a possible traitor-guard tiny army to assist them in the future.
I will be trying to do an army-wide shot sometime soon. The Chaos aren't nearly at Eldar levels, but as a whole...it's a lot.
-
I am planning a possible traitor-guard tiny army to assist them in the future.
lol lol
Careful.
You know where statements like that will get ya!
;)
-
True, the traitor-guard stuff is based simply on the fact that there are a handful of models I'd like to paint...so not a proper force, thankfully.
-
And another five standard issue Chaos Space Marines. Trying to fill out squads properly.

My third take on Obliterators...using easy-to-build aggressor kits. I'll probably keep these guys.
I like how the Obliterators turned out. Good choice on the helmet and not having the missiles. I am not a fan of the Aggressor model but these fit your army and work well. Maybe it is because they are not bright blue or red all over.
-A
-
The easy-build ones don't even have the missile launchers. I actually replaced the shoulder pads (mostly), added the crotch armour, and replaced the power-pack vents with those inverted rods and did the helmets. Also added a few extra hoses and replaced the flamer nozzles with melta bits...basically a lot of work and they still just look like Aggressors. :(
I'm happy with them, but end result wasn't necessarily worth the extra time I spent on them :D

Got in a real slugfest of a game with my buddy John last night - another chapter in our continually evolving narrative campaign.

These are nice, the common head design brings them all together. Where did you get that style head?
-
They're from one of the Skitarii kits, I'm not sure which - Vanguard or Rangers or something. They're an option for one of their infantry boxes. I just keep an eye on eBay and buy them (granted a bit expensive to do it that way, but worth it). Also, the heads are smaller than a normal space marine helmet, so it actually makes the proportions of the marine look better to me.
-
Hmm, Eldar helping out Chaos. What have the Farseers forseen? I like how the green river/sludge breaks up the game mat and the new platform cross ways along with the bridges.
-A
-
Yep, and almost no one used the walkways! lol
I'll be doing up the narrative aspect of the campaign sometime and you'll see why Eldar showed up in the same place... :D
-
Thanks, they are the Vanguard ones (knowing what to look for helps ^__^).
-
I disliked my older Plague Marine squad (white with red x's) so I sold them off on eBay and finally got around to replacing them. In retrospect I think I dislike the Maxmini heads I've used, because they're way too big and have the opposite effect of the smaller Vanguard heads. I'll be keeping this squad though as it doesn't bug me too much. This squad is armed with two Blight Launchers and the Champion is sporting a power fist and a plasma gun. A lot of firepower for a seven-man squad (note: most squads in my army are seven-men, due to Nurgle worship...)

Malavyn Saal is from the same ancient blood caste of Khyrum Saal, but he was the leader of the secretive lodge within the chapter which originally made its pact with Nurgle. The two never speak directly to each other, both at odds yet in a tenuous alliance.

I agree, the colour choice is stunning on a large piece like this. Well done (particularly that diamond!).
-
I'll be taking some better pics shortly - it's tough to photograph something white with that background. I was unsure about the diamond until I did it, and it looks better in person than in the pics. Obviously with the Death Guard homage colour scheme, Zoriskos is part of the "bad" portion of the chapter, led by Malavyn Saal above. The non-super-Chaos guys still outnumber the Nurgle cult models in the army, but the white armoured guys are no slouches.
-
Some glamour shots...lost interest pretty quick (feeling crappy tonight), but will take some more tomorrow I'd imagine.

The Nurgle stuff looks nice.
But those Eldar are Spectacular!!! They look so good on the terrain. Very not-of-this-world, which is perfect for otherworldly creatures of alien magic and ancient technology.
-
Thanks. It's partially intentional, allowing me to paint two entirely different armies (clean and bright vs. dark and dirty). Also the terrain is intentionally being painted in subdued colours with minimal details to create more of a backdrop to promote the minis.
-
Excellent glamor shots :D. I'd love to see a shot of all the Wandering Sons. I am also looking forward to playing on your board sometime soon.

-
I'll be more than happy to bring them up and when we try the 8th Redux. :D
A simple project from yesterday, Eo'Thel Starborn...for use as an Autarch. While I dislike the Autarch's existence, GW have made them a bit too valuable not to consider.

Very nice, and nice photos on the previous page.
I realise now who Zoolanderiskos really is:

That is quite missile system. It looks more intimidating than the scorpius. You could also use it as a stand alone weapon in a scenario.

Another amazing vehicle.
-
I love your work on all this thread. In fact it's so inspiring that I think I'm stealing the Renedra bases idea for my own minis :P
-
I'd addicted to them now...for everything I build. :D I even had to source some larger regimental ones to cut down for use with bikes (le sigh). The only major downside is that without adding a layer to them, you can't magnetize them without serious work...and that would have been nice for stuff like the Eldar. I do think magnetized trays are a solid way to transport stuff nowdays.

This is why I stubbornly stick to steel washers. I wanted to get my own pil shaped 50mm x 25mm cavalry steel bases cut, even had a file made for it, but ran into some heavy repair costs on the family land speeder, so now I am probably going to get some 1mm bases from Sarissa and glue 2 25mm washers under them.

(blows dust off)
Due to a change in living conditions I haven't been painting as much lately, but I have just finished up a couple of things I figure I'd add in to the project.
I found an old metal commissar on eBay - one of my favourite old sculpts so I picked him up, stripped him and repainted him as a gift for my buddy's IG force.
I also finally finished a squad of five bikers for my Renegades:

I painted another squad of three Shining Spears recently but I didn't take pics...I'll have to fix that. I also spent a lot of time working on and painting my buddy's IG stuff - helping him bring his whole army together slowly but surely.
-
And a quick Spiritseer for the Yderis Craftworld.

-
Strappin' fellow! :)
-
You can smell the disdain and disapproval wafting off of him... :D
-
Wow, nice.
-
A few more Striking Scorpions...feeling the urge to strip and repaint the Exarchs (not happy with how the alternate scheme turned out), but I may be lazy enough to leave them.
-
I really like that colour scheme on the Scorpions.
-
Same - looking good. I still have an old pot of scorpion green. It's used when I want to be offensive.
-
My original Guardian Squad from high school was Scorpion Green.
CAUTION: Incoming nostalgic memory!
The year is 1995...I'm 14 and have been collecting miniatures for about four years. I have finally decided I like Space Elves and I've spent my allowance and some money from working to buy my first squad of Eldar Guardians. I've painstakingly painted them to a poor level and I'm excited to hear about a "bring and battle" event at the GW store in the local mall (one of only three retail locations in the US at that time I believe). It's simple, everyone brings one unit - the employee will divide the players and we play a game of 40K! Woohoo!
I place my minis on the board, proudly. I look, happy to see I have one of the only painted units on the board. I move up my first turn, waiting to shoot down some evil Orks with my Shuriken Catapults. A nearby teammate shoots a lascannon into an Ork Buggy. It careens out of control, right into my Guardians and blows up, killing several of them. My unit fails leadershp and runs off the table before I do a single thing.
I go home in a huff, and paint black shoulder pads on the guardians. The rest of their 40K career they run or march straight into the enemy, heedless of caution. They are tainted.

This thread insists on getting better and better.
-
Thanks, I'm really enjoying going absolutely ham on these armies. While not "gigantic" by some collectors scales, I'm at a comfortable 4500-6000 points in each army, with a small queue of stuff left to do.
I'm struggling with the Eldar because their kits are so few and far between (not a ton of aftermarket options, tough to find some old metals, a lot of resin kits which are terrible, etc.). The Chaos Space Marines are vast and easy to enjoy because of the large number of Forgeworld codex options which gives me a lot of neat ideas to try. The comparitively small number of Eldar Forgeworld options are huge resin tanks I won't buy or some rather lackluster other options.
I prefer my Eldar army, but the Chaos force is allowing me to enjoy kit-bashing and making something a bit more unique.

Most impressive! :o
-
:o Blimey! :o
And there was me thinking they were a dying race.....
;)

Well, they are Eldar so they're rather long lived (particularly since 80% of this army is from the early 90's). :D

Love the early metal. Great stuff.

The Wandering Sons get some more armour for the table. A fourth Rhino-Russ chassis is complete, and I scratch-built (with resin aftermarket and some 3D parts and plasticard) an obnoxiously expensive super tank called the Typhon Siege Tank.

Thanks. The siege gun is huge and expensive and unlikely to see much tabletop time...but I just wanted to build it. :D

-
You've been busy! Terrific results, I love these.
-
Beautiful painting on those, love the simplicity of the Ur ghouls.
-
I'm not sure how much I'll play Blackstone Fortress, and I don't need the urghouls or the spindle drones really (outside of maybe shoe-horning them into narrative bits of Necromunda?) so they got a super minimum paintjob. The urghouls: skeleton spray, red wash on the hands, some white on the spine bits on the back and dunked...left them glossy because...slick evil creatures. No point in spending time on them :D
-
Well consider me hooked.
I was sent here to see the Rhino/Russ conversions and I was very impressed. I hope you dont mind me using the idea, otherwise the Russ sides could go to waste for a while :?
Fantastic work here and really going to enjoy back reading too :D

Thanks very much for this, I almost did it exactly like yourself without realising and just oging from the photos haha lol
Really happy with the conversion but have actually opted for the Predator version. Well almost anyway as I do really like the Predator as is, so may do a chimera/russ/rhino mash up ::)
-
No problemo, yeah I based mine off of a couple photos I found online. I figured someone had bashed the two, and while I didn't find a how-to, it was pretty easy to figure out once I got the parts.

The slow start of 2019. An Imperial Navigator and a pair of Dark Eldar Khymarae which will serve as Chaos Spawn (pets of Malavyn Saal, the wayward Chief Apothecary of the Wandering Sons). Since I use Malavyn as Fabius Bile, I figure he's taken some loyal hunting dogs (from his homeworld, before the Wandering Sons became the Wandering Sons) and has carried out his mischievous witchery-poo stuff on them...
Awful resin models from GW, fragile as hell - unlikely to make it past a few games before breaking, but...I liked the look initially.

Nicely done.
The Navigator is for a new army?
-
Another Imperial character, the Missionary, and some Chaos Veterans.
Von Lucky - the characters may be used in scenarios, or will be part of a small Imperial detachment controlled by the Rogue Trader at some point. The missionary was purchased to replace the awful priest in the Blackstone Fortress box - but I don't think I'll be playing that game any time soon.

I like your standard. Contained choice of colours and painted neatly.
Nice chipping on the armour BTW.
And the effect on the blades works well.
-
Thanks. Sadly this is my least favourite squad in a while...the dip I was using has gone a bit bad, and on top of that the primer on the standard went fuzzy so it grabbed all the dip, etc. However...I will shut up and use them. I don't think the flip colour scheme works as well on these guys (Veterans of the first company) as the Terminators, but...alas! I do think the blue power blades balance out the super-drab colour of the squad though...and I think they'll be decent in the game.
Chaos Space Marines (or...my Renegades) don't have actual standards, so I'm using the standard as an Icon for the unit. They have polearm power blades to mimic the chapter master, Khyrum Saal (they're counts-as power axes).
-
Love your Blackstone.
I haven't started anything because I have basing convention block ???

Got a cool miniature for Christmas from a buddy - one I had asked about. It's finecast...and is pretty terrible, but I painted it up as a director sieges and artillery for the CSM, a Chaos Lord to hang in the back and direct fire.
Tropios Juut, Siegemaster.

Great thread!

A few extra units...a bizarre Chaos sorcerer in terminator armour and some extra cultists (Blackstone Fortress traitor guard)

Great colour choices on the cultists. Will this army ever stop growing? Or are there titans on the horizon? (I'm giving you ideas, aren't I? lol)
-
Both armies are "done" as far as being playable. I'm slowly picking away at random units I just want to make, or a have sitting in baggies. I am almost out of stuff to paint for them (both armies being considerable in size). No interest in titans etc.
They're to the "this looks fun" place which is nice. I just prowl eBay for the occasional good deal, or buy bits for alternate turrets, etc.
-
Great unit of renegades :-*
-
You certainly know your business, I love these.

So turns out that forcing yourself to paint...is a terrible idea.
I was in a real hobby funk and forced myself to paint these Warp Spiders without a real scheme in mind. Ended up just creating as I went and powered through it. End result? Ugly friggin' Warp Spiders. Perhaps they'll grow on me. I'll keep them as I've wanted another unit for a while now. Again, an eBay rescue:

They're not that bad. Is it because they're too "earthy" in colour?
-
I like them
Nice spiders they are.

Another Eldar dreadnought I painted today (they're so easy to paint to a decent standard)

And another Wave Serpent added to my increasingly large Eldar grav flotilla...

I assembled and primed these guys when I picked up Blackstone Fortress a while back...the game was a dud for me and my buddies so I just had them sitting on the table.
Got tired of seeing them so I did a lazy paintjob on them the other night - just to get them off the damn desk. Not sure if I'll use them outside of some sci-fi skirmish game:

Some great additions 8)
The dread does look very cool :)

Had enough bits laying around to kitbash up another squad of Plague Marines.

Great thread.
The nostalgic part of me wants a metal 2ed Eldar army. The realist in me says they’ll never get used and I’ll sell them in a year ....
-
It'd be a far easier task if you stuck to actual 2nd edition rules, as you could get away with 40 minis or so. I transitioned to 8th which is far more intensive and has a lot more unit options. I do need to do some army pics - my last ones were in August...and they armies have grown substantially.
I'm sure I'll quit 40K again at some point and revert to 2nd edition or make up my own skirmish version of 40K, but I think I'll keep these armies around for a bit.
-
Nice work. I especially like the non traditional helmets (it made me think of Minions).
-
Gotta love when you post up on your own thread and it says "no activity in 120+ days!" :D
Well, I've rapidly fallen out of love with 40K and been playing it less and less (the game is kind of going off the rails!). However, I still plan to play occasionally, and if not...will revert to 2nd edition. So with that goal I've been knocking out some terrain for 40K and/or random future games of the sci-fi variety. Also hills, because hills.
So I whipped up a bunch of additional 2" upholstery foam hills, and some more trees which let me put together a much greener 40K table (a nice change of scenery, literally)

Played a few games the other week while out of town. I can still stand the game in small doses with the right opponent.
Also finally got my hands on the Micro Arts Studios hard foam crate piles. Went for a "cheating" paint scheme, but they turned out okay. May eventually go back and touch up a few barrels or add more grime/rust/maybe some light foliage to help with the idea that the heaps have been rusting for hundreds of years.

No models as I haven't touched a 40K model with a paintbrush in...a long time. I still have a bunch of random ones I might paint for fun in the future, but the army builds have more or less ground to a halt. At the right time too, as GW have sadly been skyrocketing prices - so the timing was perfect! :D

(blows dust off)
Well...as I foretold only a year and a half ago, I lost interest in 40K in a big way. 8th edition just...became more and more obnoxious and I stopped playing. Why play a game when you realize you're not having any fun doing it?
Sadly this left me with two very large 40K armies and several tables worth of terrain...and nothing to do with them.
I reverted back to my 2nd edition projects, having revamped the blog and started a co-op gaming campaign against Tyranids. Man...2nd edition is way more exciting then I remember. I know I had nostalgia for it because of the smaller armies and Jes Goodwin minis, but it produces a far more enjoyable experience thus far.
To this extent, I started reading around in my Chaos Codex (best book they ever released, I think) and stumbled into the Chaos Cultist army list. Lo and behold, Chaos Beastmen. I had purchased a dozen of these from the Blackstone Fortress game and hadn't put paint to them because 40K was disappointing me so badly. Now, I had an excuse. Sorry for the crap picture, but Chaos Beastmen are here - equipped with actual weapons since they could do that in 2nd edition.

I don't know that I'll populate this thread with too much more in the way of miniatures - unless 2nd lights a small fire for me to add some models - maybe a tiny Inquisitional party?
A picture from our first 2nd edition game in a long time:

Our campaign thus far centers around Eldar Pirates teaming up with Dark Angels to get the word out on a Tyranid Hive Fleet attack...we barely won game 1, and brutally lost game 2.

Lovely stuff. Second edition did have a great element of fun - even when (as teenagers) my brother and I would scream at each other about rules disagreements.
