Title: The Pikes, Muskets and Flouncy Shirts Painting Club (COMPLETED AND CLOSED)
Post by: Captain Blood on May 22, 2016, 06:20:28 PM
Welcome to the Pikes, Muskets and Flouncy Shirts Painting Club!

Well, the 10th season of the Lead Painters’ League has just ended, and you know, The Prof and his merry band of moderators like to keep you all entertained, painting and posting stuff…

And since tomorrow is the 398th anniversary of the Second Defenestration of Prague (the spark for the Thirty Years War in 1618), what better day to launch - drum roll, pipes and hautboys – the Pikes, Muskets and Flouncy Shirts Painting Club! (Or the 'PMPC' for short).

The idea of the painting clubs is for LAF members to populate a club with 100 newly painted miniatures, one miniature at a time, following the theme in question.

It’s an informal, collaborative project.

The scope for this painting club includes the ‘historical’ wargaming period known as ‘Renaissance’ or ‘Pike and Musket’ – for instance, Italian Wars, early Tudor, Conquistadors, Wars of Religion, Elizabethan, ECW, TYW, and the later C17th. It also includes the genre of cinematic swashbuckling adventures – the Three Musketeers, pirates, smugglers, highwaymen, Jacobite rebellions (the ’15 and the ’45), and the French and Indian War.

Note that regimented warfare of the C18th belongs in ‘The Age of The Big Battalions’, not here. But it’s a fine distinction, so we won’t be too picky.
(Basically, if it’s a miniature from an era when they wore ruffles, it should be okay).

Edit: Note also please, that submitted miniatures should represent historical (or broadly historical) types from the period, genres and settings described above. Fantasy / sci-fi miniatures with a 'swashbuckling' vibe are not eligible. So no orc pirates, outer space buccaneers, landsknecht-styled ogres, or new romantic vampire revenant elves please! :)

There are some simple rules:

- Any LAF member can take part.
- You take part by posting in this thread, a picture of a single newly painted miniature that fits the theme.
- You can only post one entry within a 24-hour period.
- You can contribute as many miniatures as you like while the painting club is running. But you can’t post more than one per day.
- The subject of your picture must be a single, fully painted and based miniature.
- It can be whatever scale you like up to 40mm.
- It can be a figure on foot, a mounted figure, or a piece of equipment – a cannon, for instance.
- You can picture your miniature on its own, or in a scenic setting.
- The picture can be a single shot of the miniature, or a composite of different views.
- Photoshop manipulation of the image (except for colour / brightness / contrast correction) isn’t allowed.
- Your picture should be a maximum size of 1000px x 1000px
- The miniature should be newly-painted for the club and not have been previously shown here or elsewhere on the internet.

If participants submit old stuff, that submission will be disqualified and removed.
If you submit more than one miniature in any one day, or multiple miniatures within a picture, that submission will be disqualified and removed.

You can upload the image using the LAF attachment function, or upload it to an image hosting service and link to here.

When you post a picture, please check the number of the entry before yours, and then number your entry accordingly. So, if for instance, the last entry was entry #037, your entry becomes #038.

Please give your picture/figure a title or name and state the manufacturer and / or sculptor if known.

The club will stay open until 100 contributions have been posted. Then the club is complete.

When you post a picture, you become a member of the club and may add this handsome painting club badge - designed by Westfalia Chris - to your forum signature line:

It's a crossed cutlass and flintlock pistol on a golden doubloon - har harr! Perfect.

To add the badge to your profile, please use this code:
http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/25/140_11_05_16_8_27_19.png

Go to the profile tab, then select ‘Forum profile information’. Paste the link into the ‘Signature’ field, click ‘Change profile’, and that will add a 50px image of the painting club badge to your displayed signature line.

Let the game commence.

En garde!

Thanks for starting this, Richard, good to have another challenge :) Lovely painting on the officer, blue and brown, I really have to use that combo!

Then I'm going to jump on that one too! In order to pay tribute to the coming anniversary of the Second Defenestration of Prague here we go with:

Superb opening entries into the club. My entry won't be anything like as fabulous as these first four figures. However, I've got a pile of pirates and F&IW that need painting so I'm starting this morning. Hopefully, I'll get at least one finished in time.

Wow  :-*
I can see that Emil's wonderful Horcata miniatures by the incomparable Mr Hicks are going to be popular here! Lovely work Alex and Jan.
And Helen, that's a fine-looking stout Parliamentary gentleman. Well done.

So we're exclusively in the C17th so far...
Who will be first to venture backwards or forwards in time to the C16th or C18th, I wonder? :)

Advice please chaps, am I OK to post a figure I've already painted (finished off the basing etc a couple of weeks ago), but hasn't appeared yet? Don't want to stretch the rules at all  :)
It'll be 18th century, one of my own sculpts.

I think this is a Foundry miniature but I can’t see it on their website. Although you can’t see much of it, Captain Bonnet is definitely wearing a very flouncy shirt!

I think, truthfully, that is a fantasy / sci-fi miniature with some sort of power pistols, rather than actual C18th black powder flintlocks! But since you've gone to the trouble, we'll let it stand  :)
However, I am going to amend the rules to make clear that this club is for historical type miniatures :)

Yes. Amazing. Admiral Benbow and Captain Blood do some of the best horses I've ever seen.

Ah yes, Michael, I've painted him. Lovely figure. The head swap for a Perry horse head is a massive improvement. I love Nick Collier's C17th figures. But his horse heads are terrible, especially the TAG ones... Lovely work Admiral.

James, do you by any chance have an entire regiment of greencoats you're waiting to post one by one?  ;) lol

I'd better pull my finger out!  ;)

Nobody's does.

When you first take a photo of a figure is when you first realise that you're not as a good a painter as you thought you were. The camera is very unkind, and doesn't spare our feelings. It sees everything more clearly than looking through bare eyes, and that can be a bit harsh. I have been through this myself. Initially it put me off painting and posting, but in the end it just made me determined to get better at it.

Anyhow, that's beside the point, I think he looks fine. This club is coming along nicely (and at an alarming pace). :)

#30 - Anne Bonny - a renowned female Caribbean pirate.

A lovely Foundry miniature from the Cutthroats range.

In October 1720, [Calico Jack] Rackham and his crew were attacked by a "King's ship", a sloop captained by Jonathan Barnet under a commission from Nicholas Lawes, Governor of Jamaica. Most of Rackham's pirates put up little resistance as many of them were too drunk to fight. However, [Mary] Read and [Anne] Bonny fought fiercely and managed to hold off Barnet's troops for a short time. Rackham and his crew were taken to Jamaica, where they were convicted and sentenced by Governor Lawes to be hanged. According to Johnson, Bonny's last words to the imprisoned Rackham were: "Had you fought like a man, you need not have been hang'd like a dog."

After being sentenced, Read and Bonny both "pleaded their bellies": asking for mercy because they were pregnant. In accordance with English common law, both women received a temporary stay of execution until they gave birth. (Source – Wikipedia)

I think Anne liked her drink so I had to give her rosy red cheeks and a big red conk!  lol  Enjoying all the entries so far, great painting by everybody.

Looks like Anne has been marooned.
Quite a different looking girl from the Anne Bonny in Black Sails  ;)

Very nice Eureka conquistador there, Keith :)

And next...

#031 Crisis 2012 miniature by Paul Hicks for the Tin Soldiers of Antwerp.
(Thanks Johan and WillieB!)

The figure represents Peter Minuit, a Walloon from Wesel - then in the Duchy of Cleves, now part of Germany.
Mynheer ‘Midnight’ served the Dutch West India Company as Director of the New Netherlands in North America, and reputedly bought Manhattan Island from the Canarsee Indians for 60 Guilders (US$24) in 1626.
(Seyseys, chief of the Canarsees, was only too happy to accept valuable merchandise for an island that was actually mostly controlled by a different tribe, the Weckquaesgeeks).

Probably been dumped by Calico Jack on a desert island somewhere!  ;)  She'll be alright as long as they left some grog behind for her! She prefers a liquid diet!

I think it is an old Citadel model: Leonardo di Miraglio

Argonor is correct it's an oldie but goodie from GW
It was originally released in 1992 as part of the volley gun crew and named as "Leonardo the engineer"
http://www.solegends.com/citcat1992/cat1992p353empartillery-02.htm

Around 2001 when GW repackaged the Dogs of War range he was re named "Leonardo di Miraglio", but I don't think the figure was repackaged or sold singularly.
The figure it's self is by Michael Perry and based on a self portrait by Leonardo da Vinci

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=leonardo+da+vinci&biw=1280&bih=907&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwimnv-r0oLNAhXMFsAKHZkFAnsQ_AUIBigB#tbm=isch&q=leonardo+da+vinci+self+portrait

It still turns up regularly on Ebay either singularly or as part of the crew of the 1992 volley gun
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=volly+gun&_osacat=16486&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xvolley+gun.TRS0&_nkw=volley+gun&_sacat=16486

#57 Catholic League Ensign c.1632 (Warlord Games miniature, flag by FlagsofWar)

My entry is an officer fighting for the Catholic-Imperialists during the thirty years war. The flag, one of the many still unassembled I have (though I want more Bavarian ones, pls pls pls Iain.....) ;), was chosen for the jesuit symbol, an iconic icon used for the fight against protestantism and curiously enough restoration work started on the 17th century jesuit convent in Valletta a few days ago, so it was a sort of inspiration.

The ensign has just started marching - his boots are too bright, I guess after a few hundred metres they'll be mud-splattered! lol

I sincerely doubt that anyone would be able to keep a fairly heavy thing like a standard in that position for more than a few moments.
Try standing with your arm stretched out in front of you with just a tiny thing in your palm. You'll tire very fast.

I think we are talking past each other. It is the pose as such, which suggests he is marching forward with the standard held aloft in one outstreched arm, not the way he grabs the pole, I have my doubts about.

He may well be waving it about to signal an advance or something like it, though.

Now, let's get some minis painted!

I am in the middle of converting/painting the rest of his gang. I have about a dozen figures so far including another four mounted ones who include Hellspite and Curlew (who appeared with the Scarecrow in the Disney TV production). Having read the original book(there are nine separate stories in total)there is alot of potential for this and it should be a really fun game when these are finished and on the table.

I am going to open  separate thread in due course with more details of the project inc some WIPs of the conversions and other figures planned.

#60   - ‘Duke’ Jacob – Roger’s Rangers

A superb miniature from the Galloping Major.

It isn’t really a cunning plan to insert my rather average painting of a 28mm figure after the good Captain has shown his genius on a 10mm figure!!! But anyway, it’s not a competition and someone has to go next.   :'(

I have around 100 F&IW miniatures awaiting painting, this is my first completed one! So this club is at least an inspiration to get me started.

Decided to go for nice, bright colours and a dark skin tone for a change. Mini's been sitting on my desk for ages, this was a good time to finish him :D

Here is my entry. No. 63

It´s a long and sad story behind this miniature.
I bought it years ago. It had to live a rough life downstairs in the basement between all those old cardboard boxes filled with miniatures. When you guys brought up this new painting club I remembered this Foundry miniature immediately.

What a good opportunity to dress him properly in paint  and spoil him with a fine matt varnish. I painted so quickly with joy while listening to a Stephen King audio book and he could have made it into the top ten of first painted minis.

But the Mighty Camera God who cursed me with a poor photographing talent had other plans.

The same plans that do not allow me to compete with others on the LPL or to share any battle reports with you, because the picture quality is so poor  :-[ The same God who blessed you all with plenty and me with none.... Halleluja...

Anyway... If you take a magnifying glass you can see how skillful this little fencer is painted but I can not share all his beauty with you because although I shot zillions of pictures on white paper, infront a forrest, infront a house, with light, with headlights, no light the results were always poor. And after a hard weeks work I decided to put on this one because thats the best I can effort.... Iam so sorry....but I hope you show mercy cuz I want this beautiful little badge so much.

So here he is one of Lord Hawkmoore`s Gentlemen Adventurer.

I combine all the badges (I use GIMP, but any photoshopping tool would do) into one picture, host it somewhere (I use my gallery here on LAF) and add the URL of the picture to my signature. Otherwise I would not be able to fly all those badges I have greedily been collecting  lol  ;)

And thank all the rest of you chaps for your kind remarks.

As I said I got this one ages ago, vaguely planning to put him in a 18-century fairytale conflict à la Susan Clarke. On one side I would like t have Oberon with a retinue of satyrs, centaurs, witches, highwaymen and hedge wizards and other creatures of a more choleric disposition. On the other there would be Titania with fairie nobles, dragoons, unicorns, farmers, and gentlewomen and others of sanguine humors.

Well, see if that ever happen

Hey! I can still make it!!! I returned from taking a group of middle school students to Greece on Monday, fully expecting this club to be finished. I had started a figure, but couldn't get him done before departure. Now, I will redouble my efforts to be one of the final 17 before the club closes...

And that is indeed an amazing standard! In fact, the entries for this club have been top notch...

I have a 54mm musketeer on the painting table for this but I'm also trying to finish deployment points for the Sharp Practice competition, finish my Old West figures and start an ACW force for Sharp Practice (possibly with the Army Painter challenge in mind). I haven't painted in months now I'm trying to cram it all in at the same time! That's the great thing about these painting leagues though, they help get you past that initial painters block. They are a brilliant idea.

There are some simple rules:

Personally, I'm glad the rate of new figures has slowed because it gives plenty of forum members the chance to enter if they want to.  In the "early days" it looked like it would be filled very quickly.

That said, I'm working on my second entry which should be ready early next week.   ::)

Only now as I post the picture does it occur to me that the pistol-carrying pet monkey might breach the rules – Single figure.

It’s a Victoria Lamb miniature and Nobleman and Monkey are together.  I’ll leave it to moderators to decide but if it’s disallowed I will graciously accept the ruling.  :)

In fairness he has no eyes so he couldn't tell it said "#3". I often paint eyes and more often than not they have a look of surprise mixed with the face I suspect colonic irrigation provides.

A 28mm Eureka Miniature that's been converted to mount the Bodhrán drummer on a nag. I wasn't going to jump into the club, but I painted some ECW Montrose Irish on the weekend... and there's no way I can wait until the weekend (it's Winter Solstice today) to take natural light photos (though he might need another coat of matt varnish). That's 100 entries. The club is now completed and closed for new entries. The thread will remain open for admiring comments, but any further entries posted here will be deleted.

There is, of course, nothing to stop you posting pictures of your newly painted miniatures in a thread of your very own :)

Thanks to all who took part. Please make sure you add the painting club medal to your forum signature line, to show off your flouncy-shirted credentials  8)

The next painting club has been agreed by the forum moderation team, and will be announced and launched shortly for your enjoyment and participation.
