Title: Dr Syn, a Smugglers tale of Romney Marsh. ** new figure page 17 **
Post by: Malamute on June 02, 2016, 04:33:20 PM
Some of you may have seen the figures I am converting in The Pikes, Muskets and Flouncy Shirts Painting Club to represent Dr Syn alias the Scarecrow.

Here I am going to document my progress in realising a number of characters from the books and films to Bring Dr Syn and the Scarecrow to life in our current C18th smuggling games. Whilst the stories take place in and around Dymchurch and the Romney Marshes we will be transporting these to Dorset so as not to have poor Jimbibbly build new scenery lol

Here are some images of the Scarecrow from the well know Disney film/TV series and some from popular literature:

Here is my interpretation of the Scarecrow riding his great black horse Gehenna . He is made from an Outpost Miniatures Highwaymans body and Rapier Miniatures Scarecrow head and a Front Rank Miniatures rearing horse. Green stuff has been added in various places to tidy the figure up and add detail. The horse has been painted to represent the devil horses the smugglers rode to terrify the revenue men and the locals.

I have converted another four riders and horses plus dismounted versions to represent the other Hell Riders including Hellspite and Curlew as featured in the Disney film pictured above.

There are also another ten dismounted smugglers who have all been converted to wear sack masks made from Greenstuff and I am now sourcing figures for some of the major characters including the good Dr Syn himself and the mute Mulato seeking revenge on Syn who is armed with a harpoon... ;D

It should be a fun project and I will document all progress here. Tomorrow I am going to paint Curlew:

Fascinating.  :o

Not surprisingly this has really captured my imagination.  :)

To start I knew very little beyond the Disney show which I had never seen. I came across the first book and found out there was a whole series of them spanning the life of Dr Syn/Captain Clegg/The Scarecrow. There is much more to the character than the kindly Robin Hood style figure as portayed in the Disney film by Patrick McGoohan. For Starters he is a cold blooded murderer who dispatches people with very little conviction lol

So much potential for gaming ;D

Dr Syn is the kindly vicar of Dymchurch under the wall in the late C18th. He does have however a wicked past. He is no other thanCaptain Clegg a much feared pirate, who was supposedly captured and hanged  some years previous.
He finds the life as a country vicar boring and looking for some adventure becomes involved in a social smuggling ring and assumes the identity of the scarecrow to terrorise the locals and revenue men. He soon takes control of the smuggling gang and for a while everything is prosperous in the town, until the navy arrive looking for smugglers under the command of a sea captain previously charged with hunting down Captain Clegg.
The captain brings with him a scared Mulato prisoner who has a skill in sniffing out contraband. The Mulato also happens to be one of Captain Cleggs previous crew who he tortured, marooned and left for dead until the navy rescued him.....
That's the first story in a nutshell. There are seven or eight books which flesh out the whole backstory, his adventures as a pirate and how he came to Dymchurch.
It's proper no nonsense adventuring written in the early C20th. :)

I demand an unmasked version using the head from the Crooked Dice figure. Perhaps two, clerical robes and Syn.

I do recall it vaguely after seeing your pointers but very very dimly and I wouldn't have been able to tell you anything about it at all.  Does seem to be right up your street for sure.  Carry on.

Should be a good thread with plenty of impressive figures.   :)

The Hammer film is pretty faithful to the book, but does not have Dr Syn use the Scarecrow costume.
It's worth watching the Disney film if you an find it. I picked it up on Amazon for £4.00. It's very Disney, he doesn't kill anyone, but it's proper swashbuckling stuff lol

If anyone is interested BBC Radio4Extra recently reran the first of the three BBC radio series' - the majority of which is still (just about) available to listen to - episode 2 for another hour, up to episode 10 which is available for another nine days. Rather good listening. Link below to episode 2, can cycle onwards from there to the rest.

A goodlie project indeed. Well done Nicholas.

I feel a pub crawl of Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch coming on, to give some first hand experience of the vibe. It is a distinctly weird corner of the country. A little bit 'other'. From Rye in the borderlands of coastal Sussex, via the moonscape of Dungeness, up into Kent at Lydd, and onto the Cinque Ports.
But the saltmarsh lamb is to die for.
Kipling's 'The Smugglers' Song' has the East Sussex setting too. Similar vibe.

The figures look great, but what will you be using for the Revenue Men and the Bow Street runners?

Either Dr De'Aths Little Lead Adventures or Legends of the High Seas with some modification, I want to keep them simple. One thing it needs to have is a fear or courage roll when anyone confronts the Scarecrow and the Hell Riders when in costume.

Yep, I think so, it's doable, I only need to paint the Scarecrows forces and a few characters for it. We already have the sailors and redcoats and loads of civilians. It's basically an extension of the Dorset game. :)

For a commercial set of rules Donnybrook sounds ideal.
It's rules profiles cater for Pirates,Cultists,Outlaws,Militia,Civilian mob ,etc and it's chatacter profiles contain Preachers, cult leader, highwayman, first mate, witch finder etc and rules for Dread(fear)ungodly apparition, spy, corrupt magistrate etc
Everything I think you are looking for, just my twopenneth worth of course.Already looking forward to playing this at Blam  :D

Donnybrook is a great set of rules. Fast simple mechanics with very few modifiers and  loads of character. I like the use of the use of polyhedral dice, gives the rules an RPG-lite feel.

The casualty rate tends to be on the high side, but the addition of a simple save roll sorts that out if you want to cut it  down a bit. Of course if you like your games short and bloody, then they're ideal as they stand.

Worth taking a look at Savage Worlds Pirates of the Spanish Main from Pinnacle Entertainment Group. Loads of good period stuff for swashbuckling in that book. See link here:

https://www.peginc.com/product-category/pirates/

Savage Worlds is an RPG lite, and uses polyhedral dice ranging from d4 through d12. Few miniatures players seem to know about Savage Worlds, but it plays extremely well as a miniatures game. I once played in a tavern brawl set in the swashbuckling black power period using Savage Worlds, "The Inn of the Luminous Toad," and that game was a blast.

Another alternative is Pulp Alley, although there's no specific books or campaigns out for the black powder period, merely some suggestions regarding how to adapt Pulp Alley to the period. Just tried Pulp Alley last month, and it's great fun.

Curlew

Scarecrow's young lieutenant sports a curious mask made of feathers to represent the bird often found in and around the marshes of Romney. Its eerie call haunts the night air and proves useful as a signal to warn the smugglers of impending trouble.

He's converted from an Outpost Wargames Services Highwayman with the head from a Scarecrow by Rapier Miniatures. Some Greenstuff and a horse from Front Rank Miniatures.

Horses are looking excellent too.

A love how they each have a mounted version - most excellent.

The horses are a pain in the backside but the end resutl is rewarding to try to do. I'm still not sure if I have captured the look, I'm not used to painting a skeleton onto a horse. lol

(In one of the stories they paint the horses black and cover them  with a skeleton pattern using glow in the dark paint. Thats the idea) lol

No, it's From Captain Clegg or Night Creatures As it was known in the States.

It's the Hammer films adaptation of Dr Syn. Its pretty faithful to the book although for some reason Dr Syn is called Dr Blyss. The Mulato is a central character to the story who is tortured and marooned on an island by Clegg/Syn. He escapes and seeks revenge.

I never noticed this thread before.  Now those scarecrows in the painting club make sense! I wondered if it was some sort of (even more) sinister morris dancing thing.

This project looks great. I have never heard of Dr Syn either and can't believe I've not seen the film. The horses look great too. There is a clear-ish acrylic paint you can get in Tesco that is glow in the dark. You could always try the odd dab on the horses over the white.

I was going to hold off posting this until I had painted the figure, but seeing as how you asked! :)

The figure is by Ironclad Miniatures in their VSF range. I am sure the sculptor modelled the figure on the actor  Milton Reid as the likeness is uncanny even down to the scars lol

I have the figure already and have actually changed him a fair bit by adding a Chinese queue (the book confusingly refers to him as a skinny Chinaman as well as a Mulato) so I have gone for a fusion of the film and book. He now wears a torn sailors jacket, tatty trousers and is armed with a harpoon again as per the film and book.

I'll post photos of the as yet unpainted figure tomorrow so you can see the difference. ;)

I watched The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh on Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color as a child and then saw the Night Creatures a few years later on Nightmare Theater. I was at a Record Riot in my twenties, where they sold records and old VHS tapes and found Dr. Syn, Alias the Scarecrow. My good fortune!
I was unaware of the series of books by Russell Thorndike until now. However many of you may be unaware of the book Dr. Syn, Alias the Scarecrow by Vic Crume which was the novelization of the movie. It was put out by Pyramids Books in 1975.
I'm following this all the way to completion. Some really great work here!

Wonderful creation, Nick, and jolly nice painting.
The basic figures themselves are not my cup of tea at all - way too munchkin-like and lumpen - but after your tender attentions they have turned out rather well, and strangely suited to the setting.

Perhaps proving anyone / anything looks better in a sackcloth scarecrow mask... (Or an Andean balaclava ;))

Yep, the choice is very limited, I can't find any other suitable mounted C18thfigures. Without completely remodelling  or sculpting from scratch, these were the only real option.

I is confusdeded.  You call the figure a Mulato.  Is that his name?  Or his parentage?  If the former, fine.  If the latter, foul.  He is clearly of asiatic heritage, Chineese by appearance.  That would not qualify as a mulatto. Mulatto is a white and black ancestral mix. Not sure of any specific usage to identify if the figure is of mixed parentage between white and asian.  Perhaps your intent is to use mulatto in that manner?  But then, you capitalize and use only one 't' so, again, maybe the name?  Or maybe one parent was mulatto and the other asian?   o_o

 But I agree, lovely painting.

The character is taken from a novel written around 1911 when the term was i believe also used in a negative way to describe any mixed race individual. In the book I think he is actually a South Seas islander, but one of the films shows him as Asian. so that's my interpretation. :)

Mulato derives from Spanish meaning mixed Breed so can also be spelt with one L. :)

No their F&IW range are smaller. They fit in fine alongside most C18th stuff I have. Foundry, Front Rank, Outpost etc. they would be fine for your C18th games of pirates, Indostan etc. ;D

Excellent Nick thanks.  :)

I say mulato you say mulatto, lets call the whole thing off...  o_o

Yes its not dead, just resting ;)

Bibbles lured me back to Mars and I have been painting (yes painting!) stuff for that.

When thats finished I shall return to the Romney Marshes. I have all the figures required for the Scarecrows gang and a fair few are undercoated and ready to go. ;)

After a lengthy hiatus I have found some new energy to press on with this project. Inspired by many recent games of the excellent Fistful of Lead rules set  I have decided to use the Horse and Musket version, they are perfect for this game.

So I dug out the brushes in readiness for a game next week and painted these this last couple of weeks. The first figures I have painted since last year. I felt very rusty, so the painting is not my best, but they will pass muster on the tabletop.

Here are four more of the Scarecrows men. Given animal names common to the marshes, disguised in sack cloth masks to conceal their identities:

Heron.

Owl, the watchman.

The figures are Foundry and Outpost Miniatures with Greenstuff masks.

Yep, I too just stumbled upon it and very glad I did. I have been struggling with how to do the horses in my Dr. Syn HOTT army and after seeing yours - problem solved. Love the way you did them!

I get the impression you are using the movie and TV show as your basis, while I am trying to go by the books, so my marsh Riders will be different from yours. In the book they are of two types, Demons and Witches, so I'll have an element of each. They are also described as wearing torn and ragged ladies dresses in a variety of colors, so I'll try and create that look. Then some have pointy witches caps and others due to the face paint a more skull like appearance.

One thing I am changing from my original plan is the appearance of the fine folk of Dymchurch. Knowing their trade, I was going for a more pirate look, but a friend who lives in Dymchurch said - "Oh no, you'd never want the revenuers to associate you with the sea, so best to have them look like city folk and farmers". Good point!

I'm even going to have an element of the famous Marsh sheep of the area, along with their Shepard.

Anyway, really enjoyed seeing your efforts and the great idea for the horses!

Terry

Hi Terry,

Yes the Disney show and also the Hammer film have been my inspiration for the look.
When I started the project I only had the first Dr Dyn book and I don’t recall much of a description for the marsh riders and their look. So I went with what I thought would work.
I’m glad you like the horses, I’m very happy with the results. I have two more on the go ‘Cats eyes’  and ‘Beelzebub’ who are mentioned in the books.

These are looking great!

I've been using a lot of the same figures to make the goat-masked mob from the Dutch TV series, De Legende Van de Bokkerijders.  (Well worth watching on YouTube, very entertaining even if you don't understand any Dutch!)

Now if Outpost would just add more masked minions, that would make everything easier!

I've been writing these up for the League of Augsburg blog.  These figures are all painted now, but I won't have time to do the next blog installment til after Huzzah! in May.  Way to busy building more models and painting more figures in time for the convention to write!

Some photos from today's Fistful of Lead get together.

Dr Syn and the Frenchman

The French Revolution is in full flow and many French nobles are fleeing their homes to the safety of England. Th Scarecrow has been contacted by the mysterious Marquis De Cauchemar to meet a French ship and bring to him a large crate. The contents of which are not to be disclosed nor is the box to be opened. The game begins on a deserted beach shortly before dark. th Scarecrow and his men have accepted the box and are attempting to deliver it to the Marquis, but the Revenue Men are out to stop him along with a group of Dragoons and a Priest. just what is in the box?....

Most of the action was centred around the old ruined church with the Dragoons and sailors assaulting the French who in each game had taken up a position inside defending the walls.

Excellent game, scenery, miniatures and pictures ...

As for what's in the box ... it was delivered  to the allotted place, no body was there, so we left a note saying "box behind left hand pillar"

Job done.

A lovely game to play in. Great scenario and figures, although on reflection it doesn’t look much like the saltmarshes and flat levels of Dr Syn country...  lol

And my dice rolling was predictably terrible, meaning my dragoons got nowhere near achieving anything they were supposed to, and Captain Softlove was speedily despatched by the smugglers, his putative superiority with the rapier counting for zilch when I persisted in rolling 2s on a D12, while the enemy (RMZ!) merrily rolled 8s, 9s and 10s on D10s with monotonous regularity  ::)

The melee rules in this set need some moderation methinks, otherwise it’s just a random dash to suicide. You may as well just flip a coin. Apart from that - great fun, thanks Nick  :)

Yep he’s relocated to Dorset.  ;) :)

Regards the melee rules. There are traits we can give the characters, Swordsman, skilled etc, that might balance it better. Will look into those.

I think you should invest in some dice for better rolling. ;) lol

I think you guys were playing a stripped down version of the rules without bells and whistles. IIRC they use a modified version of the original FfoL:H&M rules.

Aha! You mean they were playing the rules wrong? That doesn't surprise me ;)

My ace, rapier-armed swordsman and officer goes up again a rustic klutz with cudgel. He should beat him easily of course - or there should at least be a reasonable probability of beating him. I get a +1 advantage to my die roll for using a better weapon. That's it. He rolls a 10, I roll a 2 - game over.
Using the differential between two high value (D10/D12) rolls for melee, with so few modifiers for 'quality' or ability, and with so much scope for wildly divergent results makes the outcome simply too dependent on the dice.
What were we doing wrong?
(Apart from rolling terrible dice in my case :D)

Don't roll so lousy. Or maybe your guy wasn't all he was cracked up to be? I bet it made for a funny narrative though.
The Rustic klutz could have been rated as a d8 to better reflect his untrained abilities. Use of cards helps. Play a 2-eyed Jack for a additional +1 in Close Combat. There's a few traits that could help.

He wasn’t an untrained klutz, he was a seasoned smuggler used to brawling. Richards pompous Dragoon captain clearly underestimated his opponent and paid the price for it. ;) lol

Next time we’ll give him a couple of traits to increase his abilities as well.

Warbler

And here is the next one. A rather curious fellow he is too:

"Cats Eyes"

Not the easiest to reproduce a mask meant to look like a cats face. The head was the closest I could find without resorting to Greenstuff. I did some converting as the head was from another figure as is the sword.

Trying to paint cats eyes was also a challenge, I gave up in the end, so I'm not overly happy with the result, but I think he looks suitably odd and slightly scary.

I do eyes with a .005 Micron Art pen.  For at eyes, I do an ovalish slit thicker at the top than the bottom.  They do look alien/lizard.

If you prefer the round dot, make them big dots for cat at night and/or on catnip ^,^

if the idea was to have a cat you may have had to make a simple bag on the head, create the 2 openings for the eyes, form 2 ears with the corners of the bag, just paint the face of the cat on the bag
and if you like it, I can try to carve and paint the head  ;)
