Well, as some of the fantasy stuff I collect and paint (some of), is not LotR, and is not destined to become a God of Battles army, either, I think I have to put it in a separate thread.
I just purchased second hand (cheaply) a couple of plastic Warhammer High Elves boxes, and as I already had some HE from the Warhammer 3rd Ed. box, I decided to expand my colllection a little bit - with all the warband projects going on in my portfolio at the moment, I gather that I shall be able to paint another handful of minis or two for some Blood Eagle action, somewhen this fall. Plus, they may become the start of a new GoB-project along the way...
This is my original collection it all its unfinished WIP glory:

And my recent purchase (arrived today):

Got these in the mail today:

I constructed a 27 pts warband for Dragon Rampant (yes, I know, not standard size :P ) right away, details on my blog!
Planning to make another 27 pts warband out of some of my recently purchased Lizardmen ( http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=68878.75 ), and try to get a game on this coming weekend.

I have a game of Dragon Rampant planned for Sunday, and I have constructed 2 warbands out of some of the painted minis I have purchased recently.

I have been preparing a couple of tables for Attic Attack IV this upcoming weekend:
Dragon Rampant:
And Blood Eagle (with LotR minis):

Played Blood Eagle with Rohirrim and Uruk-Hai at Attic Attack late Friday evening:
Couple more pics, and a very brief AAR at my blog.

Another game of Blood Eagle - full game this time!
As usual, more pics and a short AAR on my blog.
-
And I have started preparing some well-known characters to add to my Blood Eagle LotR games:

Love that setup you have there. Does Blood Eagle lend itself to Fantasy very well? I thought it was a viking thing.

Blood Eagle is only semi-historical, and set in the 'Legendary Dark Ages'. It contains rules for a bunch of 'mythical' creatures, as well as a lot of 'Traits' (special abilities), and christian 'Miracles' as well as pagan 'Wyrd', so a low-magic setting as LotR is easily adapted.
Besides, the points system is completely open-source, so you can make your own profiles (and the 'official' lists give good advice for balanced warbands).
Only gripe is, you may lose horribly if you manage to roll all low rolls on the single d10 used (I always seem to do so when I am not rolling 2 dice for a combined result), but the system is simple and fast-flowing, giving some intense games (the alternate activation of minis in all turn phases keeps both (or all, if more) players on their toes at all times).
-
Another brief AAR with pics, this time Dragon Rampant, up on my blog:

What a sad conclusion about DR.
I, at least, shall not bother you with it in the future.
-
It has been quite while since I posted here, but yesterday I purchased Sellswords and Spellslingers from Ganesha Games.
I have already constructed my first party, and expect to have my first solo run of the rules within the next week (I just need to find the minis I had in mind when putting the characters together).
-
Found them!
Block-painted many years ago with enamels, they need an overhaul, but I am going to start playing ASAP, anyway!
-
Printed the various cards for S&S today - unfortunately, I did not have enough laminating pouches for all of the pages, so another delay (I had most of the afternoon/evening to myself, so I had hoped to get more done).
-
Got the pouches today, now I just need to cut the cards and get rollin'...

-
Cards finally done. I have set my hopes high for a game somewhen soon after this weekend.

Got gaming stuff from the garage attic into the living room; expecting to play a scenario tomorrow (if all goes to plan)!

I just got my copy a couple of days ago. Looking forward to read your play through.

I just got my copy a couple of days ago. Looking forward to read your play through.
My wife had a change of plans in mind for me - I shall have to pick up my daughter before noon (15 km south of here) to drive her to the prosthetist (20 km north of here) to try out some gizmo to stabilize her knee, until it can be surgically mended, and then to the physio-therapist (8 km north of here) for rehab training of her other knee, that had surgery about 5 months ago - so I don't think the game will happen tomorrow, after all (but Wednesday should be a new possibility). Until this evening, my understanding was that she would pick up Anna, but, well...
Real life problems are a b**ch at the moment.
-
So, finally got a game played today - am off work due to some respiratory infection (off to have my lungs x-rayed tomorrow).
I am writing a very meticulous AAR to help me memorizing the mechanics, so only Turn 1 has been covered, yet, but I should be able to get a bit more done tomorrow (lots of pics to edit, though).
The AAR is posted on my blog, but here is a couple of pics:

I like the AAR, you have done a great job showing how the game works with the added pictures of the dice and cards. I will look forward to the other reports.
You are right in thinking a rogue character is rather limited. I am trying to work out a way of having characters being able to sneak undetected and ambush the enemy. At the moment the game is really focused on killing masses of monsters.
-
As my youngest daughter (Lea, just turned 12) seems interested in playiing some SS&SS with me, I have set about creating a party for her.
I expect that we shall flesh out the profiles somewhen this weekend - more about that at a later time!

Thank you!
Maybe invent a 'Sneak' trait based on Stealth (you cannot have Sneak without Stealth), the higher level, the closer a Monster needs to come to spot the character. And then an 'Ambush' trait, based on Sneak, the higher the level, the more you reduce a monsters DL when charging from hidden.

Argonor, that is exactly what I have been trying. It is how it all works in the context of the cards/enemy activations. I will PM you with my thoughts so far. There are quite a lot of changes to fit a Silmarillion feel.

As you may have guessed from some of the minis used in the scenario, I am a huge fan of Tolkien's works, and also pretty content with (most of) the aesthetics of the Jackson interpretations, so anything conjuring up a Middle-Earth vibe in my games is very welcome. I shall have a look at your thoughts during this weekend!

So, in between fits of coughing, going to the hospital in Svendborg to have an x-ray, and cleaning/assembling a few minis, I also managed to edit more photos from yesterday's game.
This evening, I wrote up Turn 2 of the AAR, and the full turn can be found on the blog, but here is a couple of pics:

I hope to be able to write the next part tomorrow, but as it is Friday, and Friday evening is Family Time, often in front of the telly with some snacks and a movie, or some lame entertainment like X-Factor (which is, the Powers be praised, finished for this time), I may find it difficult to find the time.
-
Apologies for my bad manners earlier. I flicked off the reply quickly before work and ignored your comment about poor health.
I hope you are starting to feel better and the X ray is all OK.
It's great that you are gaming with your daughter. I have been unable to interest any of my family in gaming - they might have been put off by me starting with Napoleonics.
-
I hope you are ok.
Your game looks cool.
-
Hope the health improves. Great looking stuff. Hope the game was enjoyed by all. :)

Well, it is probably just a stubborn viral infection/cold, but I have been coughing for more than 4 weeks, so I thought it wiser to let the GP check me out, and he thought I'd better get my lungs x-rayed, just to be certain nothing foul is amiss.
I shan't have Lea's party ready right away, as all of it is unpainted/partially painted (I cleaned up the Copplestone 'Barbarian Queen' today and glued her to a washer), but it will probably be finished about the time when I have finished writing the AAR. lol
I hope you are ok.
Your game looks cool.
Thanks! Hopefully the next one will feature more fully finished/based minis.
Hope the health improves. Great looking stuff. Hope the game was enjoyed by all. :)
Thanks. This game was played solo, though, Lea's party is just in its meager beginnings (and not even statted out, yet).
-
And Part 3 of the AAR is up on the blog as well.
Here's pic (short turn, this time):

And the fourth turn has been written up on the blog.
Here is a pic from the AAR:

Dammit, I was just browsing the Hasslefree catalogue... so many ideas for adventuring parties ;D

Turn 5 is written up on the blog, here's a pic:

I hope to get one more turn done later today.
Lea and I got her party statted up, before she went to spend her afternoon with a classmate, so now I only have to get those minis painted, then she can join me for some fun and mayhem!
-
Turn 6 is on the blog.
Here's the mandatory pic:

Here's the customary custard:

This is a really generic mini, fit for many genres.
I think he will see a lot of action, when I get him painted!
-
Another action packed turn.
Looks like you are busy with several projects on the go.
As you mentioned, shield is very useful in the game. Add armour to that and characters become very hard to kill. If you work through the mathematics, if you have a skill in each of Fighter, Shield, and Armour, a single orc will only have just over a 5% chance of hitting you. Without a shield or armour the chance is 30%.

Yes, protection is nice!
When hobby-active, I always have more projects on the go, otherwise I get bored (I am mostly in the hobby because I like to game, and some of the painting/building gets a bit chore-like if I cannot shift between subjects).
Speaking of which, here's a second-hand Troll I just repaired:

Hey, if you are after more trolls that look like the LOTR ones check these out check out the dark alliance ones. Scaled for 20mm so a bit smaller than the GW ones but still a good size.
https://www.drumandflag.co.uk/products/dark-alliance-72030-war-trolls-set-1-1-72-scale-not-gw
single piece PVC (I think) I have some unpainted and they are quite nice and definitely reasonably priced. I think I first saw them in Hobgoblins thread (or was it Zerotwentythree?)

That's actually a nice set - I do have 4 or five unassembled LotR Trolls to do first, though (and a couple of Reaper Bones Trolls inbound), so I might be covered in the Troll department for a while - but those plastic Trolls could be a nice way to bolster my Mordor/Isengard forces :)
In the meantime, I have cleaned up this old thing (also to use as a Troll, Demon, or whatever I fancy):

Turn 11 is on the blog - I hope to get at least one more written up later today, and then get the game wrapped up Sunday (we are away most of Saturday, it is the birthday of both my wife and her mother, so we drive down to Sverdrup near Haderslev to celebrate, a trip of about 200 km each way.
-
As (almost) promised, Turn 12 has been posted.
:o

And the last three turns of the Through the Badlands scenario has been posted on the blog
(https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-scNSjj5PgIs/WtzKlnNMs-I/AAAAAAAAI_Q/4mIzS20VeCUpmFdeL14pir5ePd1-5A_EwCLcBGAs/s1600/2018_04_11-SSnSS_First_Game-249-750.JPG)
I shall now concentrate on the 'between scenarios' phase and getting some characters painted for Lea to join me (allthough I may play another solo scenario before that).
-
I'm really keen to get S&S now. These look great. I'm sure my son would also enjoy playing with me and my daughter would give it a go for a while too if she could use her unicorn miniature :)
I like the look of the metal troll there. Is that a chronoscope beasty or something else (Scotia Grendel?)
-

I am pretty sure, most kids will enjoy the co-op aspect of fighting alongside their family members.
The Troll is a very old Ral Partha D&D mini - the inadequate (and unfinished) paintjob was done with enamels about 30 years ago - I really should do something about it...
-
Sorry I was referring to the unpainted mini here.
That Ral Partha troll looks a tad intimidating in it's nude appearance with all to human skintones ;)
-

Ah, that is a Chronopia Devout 'Harbinger of the Darkwings', which is going to do some trolling ;)
The two flying swarms in the pic are the Darkwings, btw.
-
Forgot that I was about to post this:
Did some more work on 'table dressing bases' today:
Still no news on the SS&SS front, as today was crazy. Maybe I shall go through the 'between scenarios' stuff this evening, but I make no promises....
-
I made it!
I worked through the Campaign Activity Period for the aftermath of my first SS&SS scenario.
No pics, sorry, it is a dry write-up, which can be found here:
https://argonor-wargames.blogspot.dk/2018/04/sellswords-spellslingers-1st-campaign.html
I made a couple of house rules fitting my view of a Fantasy setting, but all in all it is pretty straight forward.

Have begun painting Lea's Party for SS&SS:

Nice looking mat. Those terrain bits above will nicely break up the mat as well.
Yeah, they should do fine on both the felt mat and the hard 'dirt' tables I have (and maybe even on the green static grass flocked boards).
The mat will be put to use tomorrow afternoon, for a co-op game of SS&SS, so I should have some in-action pics, soonish.

I just played the same scenario with my nephew a few days ago. We seemed to constantly draw cards for wandering monsters, all of which ended up being trolls, completely exhausting my collection of trolls and having to recruit tree-men as stand ins.
The scenery is looking good.
For effects, such as mana flux I have a large base that sits under the affected player so that you remember a mana flux has occurred, but the table clutter is kept down:

Yes, I need to find something else, but the Mana Flux affects all spellslingers, and it must be something consistent (and able to mark +2, +4, -2, -4).
Those Trolls keep popping up, don't they? lol

Yes, I need to get some of that stuff painted, but I currently have some other minis filling up the space on my pain(t) station, and I am frantically cleaning minis to clear space on my prepping station, so I shall not get started for at least another week :?
I have started making a new base for Rhagador, btw.

High praise from a skilled modeler like you, so a modest thank you - I hope to up my game on terrain/scenery along the way, I just have to get some more stuff cleaned away from my prepping station, first, so that I don't have to think about, how to find space for assembling the odd project (a Giant Spider comes to mind) for SS&SS.

I look forward to seeing nagash painted. One of the most infamous sculpts in the fantasy world. I also have it albeit half painted.

I think much of the infamy was due to the pj on the box - it made his skull look very big and a tad daft. I also intend to use a very different colour-scheme than the 'original'.
His right arm fits very badly, btw, I have already had to re-glue it, and if it comes off again, I shall have to either pin it, or press some gs into the socket to get a better fit...
-
I decided to sculpt some flesh onto his face as the skull didn't really fit with the pictures of him from the old Undead Army Book.

Cheers

It depends very much on, how lucky/unlucky the players are with their Activation Rolls. Take a look at the AARs on my blog, the pics should give a good impression, but I think that if you have 20-30 minion models, you should be able to cover most situations (most often you won't need that many, but things can get 'interesting').

Cool. Terrain elements work well. Practical and well painted without dominating the game.
My copy of the book arrived yesterday so I'm enjoying the read (I need more d20's). I already have a party of at least 4 in mind.

I have been following your SS&SS project with interest, your painting is very well done, and the breakdown of the turns in the battle reports on your blog are helping me to understand the rules before taking the plunge.
Which cards do you use for your games? And does anyone know of anywhere that sells the book in print?
-
Superb painting on a great figure. I especially like the way you have got the leather to work so well and the face is great too - is that natural light shading on her face or did you paint the shading? If painted that is fantastic brushmanship.
-
Great work on Sigga! It's a very nice miniature, and you've done a great job on it!

The pdf version of the rules comes with printable cards - I just printed, laminated, and cut out the deck. There's a printed card set available, too. Ganesha Games sell both the printed and pdf versions.

Thank you, the shade is natural, the cowl is rather deep and created the effect under my photo station lights.
The leather is Foundry Rawhide, btw.
Great work on Sigga! It's a very nice miniature, and you've done a great job on it!
Thanks - it took me long enough. Well I did not paint on it all the time, as I have been busy trying to get some space cleared on my prepping station, so much of my hobby time the last month was spent cleaning and basing/rebasing minis instead.

Very little activity this summer - it's been sweltering hot the last couple of months, and we were away a couple of weeks touring Belgium, Normandy, Bretagne, and a short stop in Paris - but I have printed this little thingy for SS&SS:
I hope to resume painting after this weekend, if the temperatures drop to a less deathly level...

As Andrea has mentioned on more than one occasion that he is working on (or planning) a dungeon supplement for SS&SS (due out 2019), I have begun preparations for that.

Much more to come, but I am currently printing some nice boxes in Hogwarts house colours for my daughters.
More pics on the blog.

This is the exact reason I made these. SS&SS. I've been too busy to paint mine, saying that I might just order some grey spray to give it a go.
-
As always, good looking stuff here. I have still not dipped my toe in the 3D printing waters but good to see you are having fun with this.

Thanks, I could wish for more hours per day, so that I could make faster progress, but well...
At least the printer is productive, even when I have to turn my attention elsewhere lol
Later this night I shall post some pics of the minis I painted for the OSFPP - and tomorrow probably a group shot of Lea's SS&SS party so far (I am breaking in a new camera, as my trusted Canon PowerShot has died after taking a dive with the objective open.. yeah, I was a klutz and knocked it off the table after forgetting to turn it off >:( )

Thanks! Hopefully, I shall soon be able to add the last member of the party!

Nice looking miniatures ;).
Btw, can you tell me if there are more monsters in sellswords and spellslingers than orcs, goblins and trolls. Everytime I find an battlereport, everyone is fighting against orcs. =)

Because everybody has them, and they are the opponents in the most basic scenarios.
There's a LOT of monster cards included with the (pdf) rules - I assume they are also printed in the hardcopy book so that you can copy them, but I don't know.

Thank you very much ;).

It has a very fine line between a killing spree and endless frustrations. No matter how the dice fall, playing an SS&SS scenario has always felt like an entertaining challenge to me. This time even more so... ::)
Next time we shall make the proper blood sacrifice to the Dice Gods BEFORE the game lol
In the meantime, I have embarked on a side quest:

Hi mate, it is nice to see you painting LOTR models again. ;)
Not really painting these - just rebasing, but I expect to dig into some Rohan riders somewhen soonish, as I need them for both SAGA and God of Battles (and other games where they may come in handy. Probably after Christmas, as I think I am going to spend most of my hobby time until then on various SS&SS stuff.

I think my SAGA Age of Magic non-LotR stuff better go here:
I am rebasing some second-hand archers form a large Khemri job lot I purchased a few years ago as part of my God of Battles Lords of Undeath project.
I am going to get 24 models ready for the table (including 2 Leaders and 2 Standard Bearers), so that I shall be able to field them as both 3 points of warriors in SAGA Age of Magic, and 2 units in God of Battles. They are also going to be used for One Page Rules Age of Fantasy, but I shall get back to that on a later occasion.

Great looking table! Where did you get some of the terrain? Handmade? Good looking stuff.

I think all of it is from Ziterdes (made of some kind of foam, and pre-painted). :)

Those should look great painted up (nice to see the wizard's tower too :) )
Great looking table there.

Thank you very much, good sir! Much of my photo-quality comes from using a 'real' digi-cam, not a phone camera; as long as a few settings are dialed in according to the situation I get good results. I then run the pics through an image editor (GIMP) for cropping, final white balance adjustment, and resizing for use on the interwebs,

Thankee! I need to print some more levels of the tower, though, but I have been much pre-occupied with other stuff since I got back into hobbystuff and printing this late spring (and having some clogging issues I had to sort out when printing some dragon eggs for use as gift boxes).

So, after another hobby lull due to a stressful period of unemployment, during which we also had to deal with my wife's mother's demise after a fall and laying undiscovered on a cold floor for several days before being admitted to the hospital (about 200 km from our home), and this year a couple of months getting into a new job, the current health crisis with the need for staying at home/out of the company of others has rekindled an urge to get stuck in, again.
I have no new pics to show, yet, but I have gotten Rangers of Shadow Deep Deluxe (PDF) (although I intend to redesign the combat system to something somewhat less random), ordered Warlords of Erehwon, and have decided to also purchase Oathmark as soon as it is released.
I have started making a couple of 2˝'x2˝' mats for RoSD, and when they are done, I expect WoE to arrive, and I shall play a couple of small test-games, either solo, or against one of my daughters who are both confined to our home by the corona school close-down.
-
Sounds good - all the best for this and your family.
-
Likewise, thanks!
-
Sorry to hear about your mother in law! We are luckily enough to be close to my wife's parents so being unemployed I drop by often which is probably too often for them. Hope everyone stays healthy. Best of luck with the kids!
-
Thanks, and stay safe out there!

Thanks, guys! It feels good to get something done; I have more archers and some Oathmark Revenants in the pipeline, but I have been busy prepping and painting Renedra headstones for my Halloween display the last couple of days (I have pulled almost all my painted horror-related minis out and placed them on our sideboardm where my wife has a collection of porcelain lantern-houses).

I have one more crew WIP, but I need to get their engines done, too. My third set misses the skull-lobbing arm, but I shall try to find a replacement (otherwise, I found some Halloween skellies about the right size, so I may procure an arm from one of those).

I really like WoE, but it is more 'grand skirmish' than massed battle (I think it could be easily adjusted for rank-and-file battles, though, the rules are flexible enoght that a few additions could make that work).

I think they are some of the best 'large skirmish' rules I have played. I like the relative simplicity and the fast gameplay - and the very flexible unit-building which allows a handful of minis (5 infantry, 3 cavalry) to be fielded and then augmented one mini at a time.
One the tallest hurdles for me when playing anything but 'small skirmish' is the number of minis to be painted for a new unit to be fielded, and 3-5 minis hit just that sweetspot where it is not a chore.
Another good thing is the resources at https://thisgaminglife.uk/ (https://thisgaminglife.uk/) - even the points system fleshed out, so you can build any list you fancy.
I also think that WoE can easily be adapted to massed rank-and-files unit battles, just by adding some simple rules, but I have not played around with my ideas for that just yet.

Great face! With that expression, he looks as if he's just stumbled across something thoroughly distasteful! "So that's where kobolds come from ..."

Thanks, that expression was obvious from the old pj, so I thought I'd try to enhance it by painting his eyes.
-
It certainly works! The figure looks excellent with your paint job.
-
The refreshed paint job certainly enhances his expression of disapproval.
-
Love the new additions.

Oh I love those Bronze Age undead. Really nice models, but the star of the additions is the old model wearing red. That face is just too cool! :-*

Thanks, I really like how he turned up!

Thank you! I really warmed to him when touching upm the pj.
Love the new additions.
Thanks, I am glad that I rediscovered my mojo (the last couple of years I have been really down, due to a number of circumstances).

Thanks, I am quite pleased with him now - before he had stark yellow hair and no eyes - and no shading.
The Oathmark Undead range is really interesting, I think, I may have to get some of the skellies, too, at some point, even though I have skeletons enough to feed an army of werewolves lol

Almost forgot why I came here today o_o

Really good to see you back in the saddle had been missing your posts - do keep 'em coming...

A very nice ghost. I like him!

Thanks. Covid-resteictions and some personal issues kept me down the last couple of years (not being able to meet up with people really quenched my hobby mojo, and then stress related issues did the rest).
A very nice ghost. I like him!
Thank you, I have some more to finish off, but I have a hard time finding the (contrast) colour I want to use for ghosts/spirits (ideally, I'd like to find a colour fitting for th eArmy of the Dead from LotR, but ...)
